- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome everyone to the Thursday edition, oh, the Friday edition
- 0:11Speaker 1: of Fair Territory, a special post winter Meetings edition. I'm
- 0:15Speaker 1: Ken Rosenthal here with Alana Rizzo. We already have some
- 0:18Speaker 1: news today, the Blue Jays announcing a five year extension
- 0:22Speaker 1: for team president Mark Shapiro. If you recall, both Shapiro
- 0:26Speaker 1: and his general manager Ross Atkins were thought to be
- 0:29Speaker 1: on the hot seat going into this season. When you
- 0:32Speaker 1: get to the World Series and come within through outs
- 0:34Speaker 1: of winning it, it kind of helps cool off the
- 0:37Speaker 1: hot seat. So we've got a ton to talk about.
- 0:39Speaker 1: Good to see you again. Let's get to it.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Yeah, it's great to see you as well on this Friday.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Great job, Ken. Of course, over the course of the
- 0:46Speaker 2: Winter Meetings and we have some more things to talk about,
- 0:49Speaker 2: and we start in Atlanta, Ken.
- 0:52Speaker 1: We do. And the Braves have been active in recent
- 0:55Speaker 1: days and they've had quite an interesting offseason so far.
- 0:58Speaker 1: What we've seen from them is first the signing of
- 1:01Speaker 1: Russ Rachel Iglesias to be their closer. That was one year,
- 1:04Speaker 1: sixteen million. Then they acquired Mauricio Dubon for Nick Allen,
- 1:08Speaker 1: and that was a guy that they feel can play shortstop.
- 1:11Speaker 1: If they cannot get a better shortstop, and then over
- 1:14Speaker 1: the last two days Mike Yastremsky outfielder and Robert Suarez
- 1:18Speaker 1: to be their setup man in front of Aglesias. Now
- 1:22Speaker 1: one thing to note here, Suarez, Iglesias and Yastremsky all
- 1:26Speaker 1: thirty five or over on opening day, older players, but
- 1:31Speaker 1: experienced players, players who should make the Braves better. Certainly,
- 1:35Speaker 1: the back of the bullpen now with Suarez and Iglesias
- 1:38Speaker 1: is really formidable. They still want to do shortstop if
- 1:41Speaker 1: they can get better, if they can get Hashan Kim,
- 1:43Speaker 1: maybe somebody else that we're not thinking of, and they
- 1:46Speaker 1: would probably want to add a starting pitcher as well.
- 1:49Speaker 1: But the Braves right now looking good.
- 1:52Speaker 2: And I tell you what can They also have a
- 1:54Speaker 2: new manager, of course, Brian Snicker still with the organization,
- 1:57Speaker 2: a longtime baseballman, but another longtime baseball man managing again,
- 2:01Speaker 2: Walt Weiss. What do you make of that?
- 2:03Speaker 1: I like it. And Walt Weiss is one of these
- 2:05Speaker 1: guys that I thought deserved a second chance. He was
- 2:08Speaker 1: in Colorado all those years. Of course, we all know
- 2:10Speaker 1: how difficult it is to win in Colorado because of
- 2:13Speaker 1: the ballpark and because of the way. Frankly, the team
- 2:16Speaker 1: has been run over the past I don't know, decade
- 2:19Speaker 1: or so under Dick Montfort, so they seem to be
- 2:22Speaker 1: taking a step forward now with Deeperdesta and Josh Burns
- 2:25Speaker 1: coming in. And Walt Weiss gets his second chance with Atlanta,
- 2:30Speaker 1: an organization where he had been the bench coach before,
- 2:33Speaker 1: and he seems to be a guy to me that
- 2:35Speaker 1: is well suited for that team. Reminds me a little
- 2:38Speaker 1: bit of Rob Thompson, just kind of low key but
- 2:41Speaker 1: yet extremely wise in a baseball sense.
- 2:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Rob Thompson of course getting an extension with the Philadelphia
- 2:47Speaker 2: Phillies as well, and Walker Montford already making some good
- 2:50Speaker 2: moves for the Colorado Rockies. Let's talk about the next
- 2:54Speaker 2: domino to fall, Ken, if you will, in this free
- 2:57Speaker 2: agency or off season time period. I thought it was
- 3:00Speaker 2: going to be Kyle Schwarber, the big news. It seems like, though,
- 3:03Speaker 2: Scott Boris is perhaps leaking its Kyle Tucker as the
- 3:07Speaker 2: domino that needs to fall before more stuff happens.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Right. Brendan Cuddy of The Athletic wrote a story two
- 3:13Speaker 1: days ago basically saying that Boris might want to wait
- 3:16Speaker 1: for Tucker to sign. He doesn't represent Tucker Excel does,
- 3:20Speaker 1: but he might want to wait for Tucker to go
- 3:22Speaker 1: before he gets to Bellinger. Now it's interesting because if
- 3:26Speaker 1: you look at what happened this week, Alana Kyle Schwarber
- 3:29Speaker 1: signs for one hundred and fifty million with the Philadelphia Phillies.
- 3:32Speaker 1: The next day, Scott Boris with Pete Alonzo signs to
- 3:37Speaker 1: the Baltimore Oriols one hundred and fifty five million. Basically,
- 3:41Speaker 1: Boris waited for Schwarber and then did Alonzo, and it seems,
- 3:46Speaker 1: according to Brendan's reporting, that he would like to do
- 3:48Speaker 1: the same thing here because it will enhance perhaps the
- 3:52Speaker 1: price he gets for Bellinger. If Tucker goes really high,
- 3:55Speaker 1: Bellinger's not the same player, he will not get as much,
- 3:58Speaker 1: but he might get more after Tucker goes. So that's
- 4:02Speaker 1: one way for Scott Boris to go about, and he
- 4:04Speaker 1: of course can sign Ballinger any moment if he gets
- 4:06Speaker 1: the deal he wants. But it's really interesting what we've
- 4:09Speaker 1: seen so far from these opt out free agents. Alonso,
- 4:14Speaker 1: for instance, he signed with the Mets last year, that
- 4:17Speaker 1: two year, fifty four million dollar deal. The first year
- 4:20Speaker 1: was thirty million, then he opted out, ends up getting
- 4:25Speaker 1: five years, one hundred and fifty five. So the total
- 4:27Speaker 1: in his free agency the two years six one eighty
- 4:31Speaker 1: five that is outstanding for Pete Alonzo. Now Gregman opted
- 4:35Speaker 1: out of his deal with the Red Sox forty million,
- 4:37Speaker 1: but really thirty one point seven in present day value
- 4:40Speaker 1: with all the deferrals. What will he get? What will
- 4:43Speaker 1: his final number be? And Cody Bellinger was with the Cubs,
- 4:47Speaker 1: opted in last year but opts out this year, ends
- 4:51Speaker 1: up making two years fifty five million or fifty five
- 4:53Speaker 1: million over two years with the Cubs, and now he
- 4:56Speaker 1: too stands to gain more in free agency. So that
- 5:01Speaker 1: strategy Scott Boris has taken with some of these players
- 5:04Speaker 1: over the years. I've been critical of it at times
- 5:07Speaker 1: because it seems like when he gets those short deals,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you're wondering, well, is he reading the market correctly? But
- 5:13Speaker 1: time and again go back to Matt Chapman was another one.
- 5:17Speaker 1: These have worked out pretty well for him, and we'll
- 5:19Speaker 1: see how it goes with Bregman and Bellinger coming up.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Ken Is Scott Boris the type of agent that will
- 5:25Speaker 2: allow perhaps a short term deal once for a client,
- 5:29Speaker 2: but not twice for the same guy.
- 5:32Speaker 1: That seems to be the way this goes. Alana, And obviously,
- 5:36Speaker 1: if the market dictates a second short term deal, he's
- 5:39Speaker 1: not going to have a choice. But basically, when you
- 5:43Speaker 1: have the short term deal, and this was the case
- 5:45Speaker 1: for Alonso and Bregman with a qualifying offer, okay, what
- 5:49Speaker 1: you're doing is hedging until the next year when you
- 5:52Speaker 1: won't have a qualifying offer and things are a little
- 5:55Speaker 1: bit freer. Seems that is what happened with Alonzo. To
- 5:58Speaker 1: an extent, I was a little prized Alonso got more
- 6:01Speaker 1: than Schwarber, even though he's almost two years younger. Kyle
- 6:04Speaker 1: Schwarber is coming off a fifty six home run season.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Seemed to have and we don't know for sure, but
- 6:09Speaker 1: seem to have a more active market. Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Boston,
- 6:13Speaker 1: So Bellinger and Bregman they're next up, along with Tucker
- 6:18Speaker 1: and along with Boba Schett. Those are the four big
- 6:20Speaker 1: hitters remaining and we will see how this all goes.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Yeah, those are the four big hitters. Let's talk about
- 6:26Speaker 2: the pitching market for a moment. Ken, what is the
- 6:28Speaker 2: peralta the Freddie peralta market looking like right.
- 6:32Speaker 1: I wrote this with Will Samon a couple of days ago,
- 6:35Speaker 1: and if you recall Altam, maybe a week ago, the Brewers,
- 6:40Speaker 1: I reported, were cracking the door open for trade discussions. Well,
- 6:43Speaker 1: they've cracked the door open, and as I wrote with Will,
- 6:46Speaker 1: teams are now barging through. The Yankees, the Giants, the
- 6:50Speaker 1: Orioles are among them, and I would expect there are
- 6:53Speaker 1: some other teams as well. Maybe the Mets jump into
- 6:56Speaker 1: this thing. The Brewers are going to get pushed here.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Palta is an extremely valuable commodity, top five cy young finisher.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Not only that, making eight million in twenty twenty six
- 7:08Speaker 1: before becoming a free agent. Eight million is a lot
- 7:11Speaker 1: of money. To the normal person for a starting pitcher
- 7:14Speaker 1: of his caliber, it is a pittance. So they are
- 7:18Speaker 1: going to get pushed and pushed hard on Peralta, and
- 7:20Speaker 1: I would not be surprised to see them trade him,
- 7:23Speaker 1: even though after Brent Brandon Woodriff accept the qualifying offer,
- 7:28Speaker 1: the owner and the general manager, Mark Attanasio and Matt
- 7:31Speaker 1: Arnold talked excitedly about their rotation. We love our rotation,
- 7:36Speaker 1: but if they could perhaps get a young pitcher back
- 7:38Speaker 1: for Peralta. They go into the season with Woodruff, Mazarowski
- 7:41Speaker 1: and Priester as their top three, and they've got some
- 7:44Speaker 1: depth behind them. They could justify it in their heads
- 7:47Speaker 1: in that way.
- 7:49Speaker 2: Ken, who are the teams pushing for Peralta? Who's knocking
- 7:52Speaker 2: on Milwaukee's door? What makes the most sense?
- 7:54Speaker 1: Well, the teams I just mentioned all make sense, and
- 7:57Speaker 1: really a lot of any team that wants starting pitching
- 8:01Speaker 1: makes sense for Freddy Paralta just because of what I said.
- 8:04Speaker 1: The question is which team will be able to or
- 8:07Speaker 1: willing to pay the acquisition cost necessary to get one
- 8:12Speaker 1: year of Paralta and one year of a pitcher is
- 8:16Speaker 1: not going to get you what it might if you
- 8:18Speaker 1: had multiple years of control that you were peddling. So
- 8:21Speaker 1: we saw with Corbyn Burns the Brewers made a good
- 8:24Speaker 1: trade a couple of years ago. It was Joey Ortez,
- 8:28Speaker 1: it was Dale Hall, and it was a thirty fourth
- 8:30Speaker 1: pick in the draft. Now, our Chees hasn't hit much,
- 8:32Speaker 1: but he's a great defensive shortstop. Dale Hall has been
- 8:35Speaker 1: inconsistent and injured, but he's got a lot of promise
- 8:38Speaker 1: and the draft pick. We'll see how that turns out.
- 8:40Speaker 1: But Burns was making almost twice as much as Peralta,
- 8:44Speaker 1: so Paralta in the trade market will be that much
- 8:47Speaker 1: more valuable.
- 8:48Speaker 2: ID love to see where this is all going to
- 8:50Speaker 2: play out. I still think Ken and you know certainly
- 8:53Speaker 2: more than I, but I still would love to see
- 8:54Speaker 2: Woodroff and Peralta in the same rotation. Just makes Milwaukee
- 8:58Speaker 2: that much more formative. But obviously teams must like what
- 9:01Speaker 2: they're hearing about Freddy Peralta and those sweepstakes. Much more
- 9:04Speaker 2: to come on Fair Territory with Ken Rosenthal. Get those
- 9:08Speaker 2: questions in for Ken. We're gonna do Grill and Ken
- 9:11Speaker 2: right after a word from our friends at foul.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Hey, when you get a chance, subscribe to Foul Territory
- 9:17Speaker 3: on YouTube. We are getting very close to three hundred
- 9:21Speaker 3: thousand subscribers on the channel and love all of them,
- 9:24Speaker 3: so we'd love you to join us on that channel
- 9:26Speaker 3: as we break down everything going on across the sport.
- 9:30Speaker 3: It is baseball the way it should be covered at
- 9:33Speaker 3: Foul Territory.
- 9:34Speaker 2: Give us a sub all right, time now to I
- 9:43Speaker 2: have all kinds of problems with my headroom, and I
- 9:45Speaker 2: know my director's going nuts right now, but I'm gonna
- 9:47Speaker 2: try to fix my camera. I apologize all right time
- 9:49Speaker 2: now for Grill and Ken. This is where we get
- 9:52Speaker 2: the questions in from you the fans in our chat
- 9:55Speaker 2: to ask Ken Rosenthal a question. So the first one
- 9:59Speaker 2: is on the uh looks like, oh the Bechet market. Okay,
- 10:03Speaker 2: So this from Justin Longhai, justin, how are you who
- 10:05Speaker 2: is the most appealing shortstop available on the market? Assuming
- 10:08Speaker 2: can that most teams view Bo Bashett as a second
- 10:12Speaker 2: basement at this point, some teams.
- 10:14Speaker 1: Do view him as a shortstop, and that's my understanding
- 10:18Speaker 1: from talking to people in his camp, and you can
- 10:21Speaker 1: see why. Even though his metrics were down. Bob Bashett
- 10:25Speaker 1: is an extremely good offensive player and at shortstop he
- 10:28Speaker 1: give you a greater offensive boost than most shortstops will provide.
- 10:33Speaker 1: But if you're looking for a pure shortstop, a guy
- 10:36Speaker 1: who is a gifted defender, it's Hashan Kim and we
- 10:39Speaker 1: haven't heard a whole lot about him. The Braves certainly
- 10:42Speaker 1: would love to have him back. Remember they got him
- 10:44Speaker 1: for the final month of the season. There are other
- 10:46Speaker 1: teams as well, who I am sure are on Kim,
- 10:49Speaker 1: just as there are many teams on Bishett and Bashet's
- 10:52Speaker 1: Market's going to be really interesting. I reported last week
- 10:55Speaker 1: about Boston being in on him. Toronto of course is
- 10:59Speaker 1: in on him two and others. And he is a guy.
- 11:03Speaker 1: When you look at his offensive stats, the underlying ones,
- 11:06Speaker 1: they are really good. He hits the ball hard, he
- 11:09Speaker 1: hits good pitching. He is what you want at the plate.
- 11:12Speaker 1: And with regard to his position, he's certainly open to
- 11:16Speaker 1: playing second base as he did in the World Series,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and perhaps even third base. So that's going to be
- 11:21Speaker 1: an interesting one in the days ahead.
- 11:23Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Another interesting candidate in terms of trade ken is katel Marte.
- 11:28Speaker 2: What are the what is the likelihood that katel Marte
- 11:32Speaker 2: gets traded? Videos two of seven? Are there any new
- 11:34Speaker 2: rumors regarding Arizona possibly moving him?
- 11:38Speaker 1: This one is hard to read because Arizona's position is
- 11:42Speaker 1: we will listen on katel Marte because we have extreme
- 11:45Speaker 1: pitching needs and some other needs as well, with so
- 11:48Speaker 1: many of their pitchers actually three of them injured coming
- 11:50Speaker 1: off Tommy Johns, Corbyn Burns, Justin Martinez in the bullpen
- 11:54Speaker 1: and AJ Puck. But they keep saying as well, we
- 11:57Speaker 1: don't really want to trade Marte because he is one
- 12:00Speaker 1: of the best second basemen in the game. That said,
- 12:03Speaker 1: there is a lot of activity on him. Nick Bacoro
- 12:05Speaker 1: of the Arizona Republic reporting that the Rays considered Shane
- 12:09Speaker 1: Boz and Pepio Ryan Pepio in a trade for Marte.
- 12:14Speaker 1: I'm told it wasn't those two exactly. It was one
- 12:17Speaker 1: of them plus more. But regardless the Rais or a
- 12:20Speaker 1: team that has been interested, the Pirates have an interest
- 12:23Speaker 1: in him. The Red Sox have been linked to him.
- 12:25Speaker 1: All kinds of teams would want katel Marte. But at
- 12:29Speaker 1: the same time, the Diamondbacks, like the Brewers with Peralta,
- 12:33Speaker 1: are going to ask for a high cost. They want
- 12:37Speaker 1: a high price, and you can understand that when you
- 12:39Speaker 1: have good players, that's what you do. So where this goes,
- 12:42Speaker 1: I'm not sure, but there's one other element here. Ten
- 12:45Speaker 1: days into the season, katel Marte gains ten and five
- 12:49Speaker 1: rights ten years of service, five consecutively with the same team,
- 12:53Speaker 1: and that means he can veto any trade. So if
- 12:56Speaker 1: you're going to trade him, and the Diamondbacks know this now.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah, you got to do it now. You can't wait
- 13:02Speaker 2: till the season starts, because then he gains more leverage
- 13:05Speaker 2: as you know, all right, for the Mets, who we've
- 13:07Speaker 2: talked about the Mets a lot this week. What would
- 13:09Speaker 2: a package for Wilson Contreras look like?
- 13:13Speaker 1: Not sure exactly. He's owed two years, thirty six and
- 13:16Speaker 1: a half million. I believe that is the number. It's
- 13:19Speaker 1: that range anyway, and because you're taking on the money,
- 13:23Speaker 1: I would assume that the prospect package wouldn't be extremely great.
- 13:28Speaker 1: It's not like you're going to have to give up
- 13:30Speaker 1: one of your top prospects for him. But maybe you
- 13:32Speaker 1: get or give one of a group of I don't know,
- 13:36Speaker 1: your top ten or fifteen, and maybe a little bit
- 13:39Speaker 1: more than that someone else's too. I'm not sure I'm
- 13:42Speaker 1: reading this right. Maybe I'm selling low or giving the
- 13:47Speaker 1: Cardinals not enough here. But Wilson Contreras is really good.
- 13:51Speaker 1: I don't know that he's going to get you one
- 13:52Speaker 1: of the mets big pitchers, mclean'sprote or Tom maybe someone
- 13:56Speaker 1: from a lesser group, a second tier of prospects.
- 14:00Speaker 2: All the Mets. What are you doing? More on that
- 14:02Speaker 2: to come? I think and do it in Dork of
- 14:03Speaker 2: the Week. This is a question in regards to Tarek
- 14:06Speaker 2: scooble Ken. I truly feel that Tarek scooble is not
- 14:10Speaker 2: going to get moved right now, and I don't think
- 14:12Speaker 2: he's coming to the Dodgers. What package can the Dodgers
- 14:14Speaker 2: offer for Schooble? This person Young? The twenty seven five
- 14:19Speaker 2: has she and emmitts shean Hope of course, and Dalton rushing.
- 14:23Speaker 1: That's an interesting package. And what you're getting in that
- 14:27Speaker 1: package is a guy who's ready to step into a
- 14:30Speaker 1: rotation in emmachine with five years of control. I believe
- 14:34Speaker 1: here Hope is one of the dodgers many fine outfield prospects.
- 14:38Speaker 1: They've got a bunch of them, three or four that
- 14:40Speaker 1: are a couple of years away in some cases, closer
- 14:44Speaker 1: in others. And then who is the third player in
- 14:46Speaker 1: that one? Oh? Russian in rushing guy, a quality bat.
- 14:52Speaker 1: I'm not sure he's going to be a catcher, but hey,
- 14:55Speaker 1: that's a guy that you would want. So the question
- 14:58Speaker 1: would become are the Dodgers willing to do that for
- 15:01Speaker 1: one year of Trerek's Schoobel? You remember the package I
- 15:04Speaker 1: just mentioned for Burns, the one year that the Orioles
- 15:07Speaker 1: got for him, They gave up less than what was
- 15:10Speaker 1: just described now. Trek scouble back to backsiw Young winner
- 15:14Speaker 1: Best Pitcher in the sport arguably right now, along with
- 15:16Speaker 1: Paul Skens, you would give up more for him than
- 15:20Speaker 1: perhaps the Brewers got for Burns. But I don't know
- 15:23Speaker 1: that you would go to that level. I'm sure the
- 15:25Speaker 1: Dodgers wouldn't want to ideally. But what's interesting here, Trek
- 15:30Speaker 1: Schooble represented by Scott Borris. If you're the Dodger, just
- 15:33Speaker 1: like when the Orioles acquired Burns, who also was represented
- 15:36Speaker 1: by Scott Borris, you know that player is going to
- 15:40Speaker 1: free agency. So the idea of getting him and signing
- 15:43Speaker 1: him to an extension right away probably not happening.
- 15:47Speaker 2: I have said that a thousand times, but because Ken
- 15:50Speaker 2: said it, I know that I'm not crazy. There's no
- 15:52Speaker 2: way he's going to go there for a year because
- 15:54Speaker 2: you know he's going to test free agency because Boris
- 15:57Speaker 2: is his agent. Ken, thank you.
- 15:58Speaker 1: One more Dodgers doesn't rule out the Dodgers and signing them.
- 16:02Speaker 1: It's just.
- 16:04Speaker 2: My guess is that they're going to want to sign
- 16:06Speaker 2: him to an extension at that time and they're not
- 16:08Speaker 2: going to be allowed to do so. Although you know
- 16:10Speaker 2: they wanted to do it with Mookie Betts and it
- 16:13Speaker 2: ended up working out.
- 16:14Speaker 1: But here we go.
- 16:14Speaker 2: Do the Giants change their minds and sign either Kyle
- 16:17Speaker 2: Tucker or Bobashett since there are holes at those positions.
- 16:22Speaker 2: George wants to know.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Bobaschett particularly would be a great fit. They are looking
- 16:26Speaker 1: for a second baseman, and they are acting curiously because
- 16:31Speaker 1: Andrew Baggerley of The Athletic Reporter a couple of weeks
- 16:34Speaker 1: ago that they're not in on am I a picture
- 16:37Speaker 1: that they've been linked to a pitcher who would fit
- 16:39Speaker 1: them naturally, and it seems that they're not prepared to
- 16:44Speaker 1: spend at the top of the market, and that's what
- 16:46Speaker 1: it's going to take for either of those players. And
- 16:49Speaker 1: you can understand it. For position players. They've already got
- 16:51Speaker 1: three huge deals on their books, devors A, Damis and Chapman.
- 16:56Speaker 1: But why they wouldn't continue spending on the pitching is
- 17:00Speaker 1: a little curious to me. I expect that they're going
- 17:02Speaker 1: to sign Max Scherzer. Max Scherzer loves Tony Vitello. It
- 17:05Speaker 1: was his pitching coach at Missouri, but they could use
- 17:08Speaker 1: one more and from that perspective, and maybe some bullpen
- 17:12Speaker 1: help as well. I'm a little baffled by the Giants
- 17:17Speaker 1: and they're seeming retrenchment here when they've spent heavily on
- 17:21Speaker 1: those three position players that I mentioned. Now, yes, they've
- 17:24Speaker 1: got big investments there and you can't fault them for that,
- 17:27Speaker 1: but it would seem that when you're at that level,
- 17:30Speaker 1: you'd want to keep going instead of kind of going backwards.
- 17:34Speaker 1: And I'm not sure which way they're going exactly.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Interesting Rhino Thunder sixty eight Ken has a question about
- 17:42Speaker 2: the O's, who obviously just landed Pete Alonso. To who
- 17:45Speaker 2: do you think the Orioles grab in terms of starting
- 17:47Speaker 2: pitching help.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Well, Ranger Suarez is a free agent that they've been
- 17:51Speaker 1: linked to Edward Cabrera. I reported with Will Salmon the
- 17:54Speaker 1: other day that that's a picture they're pursuing in trade.
- 17:57Speaker 1: Freddy Peralta we mentioned as well. I'm sure they're on
- 18:01Speaker 1: virtually every starting pitcher in the market, and with the
- 18:05Speaker 1: Alonso signing, it doesn't necessarily signal that they're going to
- 18:07Speaker 1: stop spending. If anything, they're going to keep going. As
- 18:11Speaker 1: I was just mentioning with the Giants, once you get
- 18:13Speaker 1: to a certain point, you want to make your team
- 18:16Speaker 1: as strong as possible. They have had so far, arguably
- 18:20Speaker 1: the best season of any team. I'm talking about Leot Taveres,
- 18:23Speaker 1: Andrew Kittridge, Taylor Ward, Pete Alonso, and Ryan Helsley. That's
- 18:28Speaker 1: a big haul. And again they're not done, so I'm
- 18:32Speaker 1: not exactly sure where they're going. Maybe they're not sure.
- 18:35Speaker 1: They're probably operating on multiple fronts, but they are going
- 18:39Speaker 1: to come away with a starting pitcher. And keep in mind,
- 18:42Speaker 1: they're not exactly lacking in that area. They've got Trevor
- 18:47Speaker 1: Rodgers who really came out at the end of last season,
- 18:49Speaker 1: Kyle Bradish who came back from Tommy john So they're
- 18:52Speaker 1: in a good spot, but they need one more, if
- 18:55Speaker 1: not two.
- 18:56Speaker 2: I have a question for you regarding that, actually two questions.
- 18:59Speaker 2: They train away Grayson Rodriguez, though, Ken, So why trade
- 19:02Speaker 2: away Rodriguez when you are in need of a starter to.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Get Taylor Award and because you're not sure Grayson Rodriguez
- 19:09Speaker 1: will be healthy. Taylor Award was arguably best right handed
- 19:13Speaker 1: hitting outfielder available. That is a position, and of ten,
- 19:19Speaker 1: it's of great scarcity right now. What I'm trying to
- 19:22Speaker 1: say was right handed hitting outfielders you can't find it.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Mike Petriella wrote a great article on MLB dot com
- 19:28Speaker 1: last week about this. They're just extremely scarce, so they
- 19:31Speaker 1: took a chance with Grayson Rodriguez. But that was the
- 19:34Speaker 1: choice that they made.
- 19:36Speaker 2: In all likelihood. Do you think their starting pitching help
- 19:38Speaker 2: can comes via trade or is there someone on the
- 19:41Speaker 2: free agent market you see fitting in?
- 19:44Speaker 1: My guess is trade. They've made their big free agent
- 19:47Speaker 1: signing with Alonso. They've also signed Hellsley much lesser deal,
- 19:51Speaker 1: but a significant deal, and they have players to trade.
- 19:55Speaker 1: Kobe Mayo is one. Perhaps Ryan Mountcastle is now expendable
- 20:00Speaker 1: with Pete A. Lonso coming aboard, so they can do
- 20:03Speaker 1: some things from a trade perspective. They've got other prospects
- 20:05Speaker 1: as well. I would expect that's the way they would
- 20:08Speaker 1: prefer to go. Now, whether it's the way they actually go,
- 20:12Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe they feel they can get range
- 20:14Speaker 1: of Swarz on a great deal and they go in
- 20:15Speaker 1: that direction. Maybe they do that in trade for a
- 20:18Speaker 1: starting pitcher. Kind of the world is their oyster.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Right now, the Orioles, they have been busy. Great questions today, guys,
- 20:25Speaker 2: Thanks so much for participating in the chat with Ken Rosent.
- 20:27Speaker 2: Thought we're going to be right back after this with
- 20:30Speaker 2: our dude and dork of the week.
- 20:32Speaker 3: Bet, I'm jam account holders today. How about in any
- 20:36Speaker 3: sport parlay boost token you can score a bigger payout
- 20:38Speaker 3: if your wager with that token. Hits tokens can be
- 20:41Speaker 3: used on parlays and on same game parlays. Gambling problem,
- 20:44Speaker 3: We're concerned. There's help called one eight hundred gambler.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Dude, dude, dude.
- 20:56Speaker 2: All right, it is time to give some praise. I
- 20:58Speaker 2: appreciate you having my self and Hazel May as the
- 21:01Speaker 2: dudets of the week last week. Thank you for that.
- 21:03Speaker 2: Who is your dude of the week.
- 21:05Speaker 1: More award winners Alana and I've got Joe buck Ford
- 21:09Speaker 1: Frick winner and Paul Hoynes the Baseball Writers Association of
- 21:13Speaker 1: America Career Excellence Award winner. And these two guys were
- 21:17Speaker 1: honored this week or named to win those awards this week. Joe,
- 21:21Speaker 1: of course, I worked for with Fox for many years.
- 21:24Speaker 1: He called twenty four World Series. I know some people say, well, hey,
- 21:28Speaker 1: he's still young for this. Come on, He's the second
- 21:30Speaker 1: youngest since Vin Scully to win this award, and there
- 21:33Speaker 1: are some other broadcasters quite deserving, but this vote is
- 21:38Speaker 1: conducted among basically his peers, thirteen Living Frick Award recipients
- 21:44Speaker 1: and three broadcast historians columnists. So those are the people
- 21:48Speaker 1: who chose Joe Buck, and they could not have made
- 21:51Speaker 1: a better choice. He's one of the all time greats.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I used to laugh all the time when people would say,
- 21:56Speaker 1: ken Joe Buck suggs Man. Really Fox kept him out
- 22:00Speaker 1: for twenty four World Series and ESPN wanted them to
- 22:02Speaker 1: cover football for them, And seems to me he's done
- 22:06Speaker 1: okay for a guy who supposedly sucks. Paul Hoyins. We
- 22:10Speaker 1: all love Paul. He is one of the great characters
- 22:13Speaker 1: among baseball writers and he's covered the Guardians and Indians
- 22:17Speaker 1: for more than four decades and done it with his
- 22:20Speaker 1: usual work, ethic and humor and all of that and
- 22:24Speaker 1: a most deserving winner. Baseball Writers Association Award is a
- 22:28Speaker 1: little bit different. It's comprised of a voting block of
- 22:31Speaker 1: all of us. All the baseball writers who are eligible
- 22:34Speaker 1: to vote can do that, and Hoines was the selection
- 22:37Speaker 1: this year. Very deserved.
- 22:39Speaker 2: Yeah, congratulations to both Joe Buck and Paul Hoyins. What
- 22:42Speaker 2: an honor I mean to be able to be in
- 22:44Speaker 2: Cooperstown and memorialized in that way is quite the honor,
- 22:47Speaker 2: So congrats to them. My dude of the week is
- 22:49Speaker 2: Michael Lias. I think this is a guy that has
- 22:51Speaker 2: been a little bit on the hot seat and we
- 22:53Speaker 2: were wondering what his tenure was going to be, of
- 22:56Speaker 2: course with the Baltimore Orioles, but they've had a very
- 23:00Speaker 2: oppressive off season. I think obviously the feather in the
- 23:03Speaker 2: cap is the signing of Pete Alonzo. I don't know
- 23:06Speaker 2: that Alonzo wanted to leave New York, but the Mets
- 23:08Speaker 2: are very questionable. So congratulations to Michael Lias making some
- 23:12Speaker 2: good moves, making the Orioles incredibly relevant in what is
- 23:15Speaker 2: a very competitive Al East. So all right, so there
- 23:19Speaker 2: you have it as far as our dudes of the week.
- 23:21Speaker 2: Time now for our dork of the week. All right,
- 23:32Speaker 2: I'll go ahead and take honors on this one. The Mets.
- 23:34Speaker 2: What are we doing? Ken? What are we doing? David
- 23:37Speaker 2: Stearns goes over there from the Milwaukee Brewers and is
- 23:40Speaker 2: treating the Mets like the brew Crew, And obviously Steve Cohen,
- 23:43Speaker 2: with all of the money known to man more than God,
- 23:47Speaker 2: really just got the licensing rights for casinos in that
- 23:51Speaker 2: area and has gotten rid of the core. Brandon Neimo
- 23:54Speaker 2: is in Texas obviously, Edwin Diaz welcome to Los Angeles,
- 23:59Speaker 2: and pet alan is an Oh what are the Mets doing? Ken,
- 24:02Speaker 2: I just don't understand this. One of the richest owners
- 24:06Speaker 2: in the game is getting rid of and now you
- 24:08Speaker 2: just have this albatross of a contract of Juan Soto
- 24:10Speaker 2: and nobody else around him.
- 24:13Speaker 1: Well, it's a great question what they're doing. I wrote
- 24:15Speaker 1: a column about it, and granted it's only December twelfth,
- 24:18Speaker 1: the off season is far from over, but they have acted.
- 24:22Speaker 1: In my views, I wrote with a confidence that borders
- 24:26Speaker 1: on arrogance even indifference regarding these players. And I know
- 24:29Speaker 1: certain Met fans are saying, well, we didn't win with
- 24:32Speaker 1: these guys. They didn't win with those guys. True, but
- 24:35Speaker 1: not because Peter Alonzo and Edwin Diaz in particular were
- 24:38Speaker 1: poor performers. They were elite performers for the Mets, so
- 24:42Speaker 1: they weren't the problem. Now, my dork of the week, Alana,
- 24:46Speaker 1: it's someone near and both of us you worked with
- 24:49Speaker 1: him at MLB Network very closely on the same show.
- 24:53Speaker 1: So I'm going to exempt you from the conversation I
- 24:55Speaker 1: know you don't want to maybe crush him. I will
- 24:57Speaker 1: crush him. I worked with him at MLB Network two.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Look at mad Dog Russo and watch this amazing feat
- 25:04Speaker 1: of athleticism as he tried a half court shot. Go ahead, Doggie,
- 25:10Speaker 1: here comes? What is this?
- 25:13Speaker 2: He also look like it also looked like he pulled
- 25:16Speaker 2: a hammy. Not only is he one handing it up
- 25:18Speaker 2: there and completely missing it, he's like he looked like
- 25:20Speaker 2: he pulled a hamstring in this process.
- 25:23Speaker 1: Alana, you just asked the question with the Mets, what
- 25:25Speaker 1: are we doing? I have the same question for the dog,
- 25:28Speaker 1: what are we doing? And really what we saw there?
- 25:31Speaker 1: Merritt's one of his classic rants on ESPN, but we're
- 25:34Speaker 1: not going to see it. The dog's not going to
- 25:36Speaker 1: rip the dog. But he's the dork of the week.
- 25:39Speaker 1: He is the dork of the week.
- 25:42Speaker 2: We appreciate it very much for all of you that
- 25:44Speaker 2: are watching and listening. Foul Territory is coming up after this,
- 25:47Speaker 2: but I have to tell you what a time to
- 25:50Speaker 2: be with you. Ken have a great week. You're awesome
- 25:53Speaker 2: at the Winter meetings. Don't forget everybody Their territory is next.
- 25:57Speaker 2: Tod Frazier Eric krat Scott Braun. They're going to walk
- 26:00Speaker 2: FP Santangelo Ferries back Monday at ten am. Have a
- 26:04Speaker 2: great week, everybody,
