- 1:12Canadians something or other, but everyone knows.
- 1:15Canada. But yeah, today, today is a good
- 1:18one, a very fun one. Today we're doing our top 10
- 1:21defensemen for the 2526 fantasy hockey season.
- 1:25A lot of interesting content over here because this can be
- 1:29very leak exciting dependent nevertheless or bringing new
- 1:32value for bangers leagues focus. But I think that these translate
- 1:36to every single league you're in.
- 1:37I think the defenseman Top 10 is honestly one of the more
- 1:41interesting ones because we have some kind of guys.
- 1:44I feel the tears are kind of separated more this year.
- 1:46They were last year. Last year we had a bunch of guys
- 1:48that everybody was excited about, and this year I feel like
- 1:50everybody has a couple more questions or asterisks next to
- 1:53their name, so it's gonna be 1. Yeah, for sure.
- 1:56Before we begin, you can find the link to all of our socials
- 1:59in the link for you in the podcast description.

- 2:16Yeah, that. Makes sense?
- 2:20I think I, I wanted to like get in early and then I tried to say
- 2:22something else and just came out as that.
- 2:24So just roll with. It get in while it's crispy, but
- 2:31yeah, so. You're gonna segue into like a
- 2:33fast food, like commercial or something.
- 2:36We can't do it. Keep doing all these ads without
- 2:38actually having any sponsors guys.
- 2:40Yeah, that's it. You don't know that Cover Girl
- 2:42makes chicken burgers? Now.
- 2:47Alright, cool, so let's. Yeah.
- 2:53All right, here's here's hoping everyone takes it with good fun
- 2:57and that we get both KFC and CoverGirl to sponsor us.
- 3:00OK, so let us begin with our. Honorable Mentions.
- 3:04Yes, nice. All right, our honorable
- 3:07mentions for the top defensemen, we've got Shea Theodore, Lane
- 3:12Hudson, Dougie Hamilton, Adam Fox and Josh Morrissey.
- 3:16Who is the favorite and who is the biggest surprise?
- 3:21This surprised that he's on there or.
- 3:23Someone who is not on the top ten?
- 3:25I guess so. No, no.
- 3:26The favorite would be the one who you're like, he could sneak
- 3:28in the top ten. Who's the biggest surprise that
- 3:30he made it and who's the biggest?
- 3:31Who's your favorite of these? Who could have snuck onto the
- 3:33top 10? I think my my favorite guy that
- 3:38I would rather that I would want to have on this list that isn't
- 3:41in the top ten. It's tough between Doggy and
- 3:45Adam Fox in my opinion, just because I feel like those are
- 3:48the ones that have the highest points upside.
- 3:51Dougie does shoot Falkland is having on my team because he has
- 3:54like 0 peripherals, but I do believe in the Rangers bounce
- 3:57back this year. So at, you know, the right
- 3:59price, I would want him on my team just for that power play
- 4:02exposure and the points threshold.
- 4:04All these guys are kind of similar archetype, right?
- 4:06Just, you know, not much category coverage, but you're
- 4:08getting some shots and mostly just like P1.
- 4:13Yeah, I think that's why they didn't crack our top ten, right,
- 4:15is yeah, they're getting the points, but they're really not
- 4:18contributing elsewhere and they're not necessarily the top
- 4:20top points guys. So.
- 4:22So yeah, I think my favorite is also Fox of these 5, because we
- 4:26do all believe in the Rangers bounce back.
- 4:28Yeah. And again, once you're going for
- 4:30a guy with this archetype, you're just looking for a guy
- 4:32who's gonna get the most points. And I think out of these five,
- 4:34he probably gets the most. But I'm also really on New
- 4:36Jersey, though. I feel like New Jersey.
- 4:39Hamilton has has that Luke Hughes, like sniffing at his
- 4:42heels, you know, like Fox doesn't have that.
- 4:44So to me, like, I don't think it would be out of the realm of
- 4:47possibility that he takes the power play.
- 4:48I don't think it's likely. But we've seen it happen two
- 4:50years ago, you know, So it's definitely out there.
- 4:53So I'm definitely wary of Hamilton for that reason.
- 4:55The thing is, 2 years ago they saw it happen because it was
- 4:58like his rookie year and they wanted to make it happen.
- 5:00Then it didn't work out at all. And then the year after they
- 5:03were like, alright, well let's. Just run it now.
- 5:05He's got two years under his belt.
- 5:06He's more mature as a defenseman and as inhaler.
- 5:09I don't know. I'm still, I'm still happy to
- 5:11take Dog on my team and he's still an honorable mention.
- 5:13But versus him versus Fox, to me it's easy Fox because he doesn't
- 5:16have that question mark. If Doggie keeps the P1 the whole
- 5:18season, I think he's out. I think he finishes probably top
- 5:2110 defensemen. It's just, yeah, like you said,
- 5:23Duques question definitely, you know, impacts his his fantasy
- 5:27value and that's why it's not on the top 10.
- 5:28Yep, Jakey. I'm gonna go lay in.
- 5:31I like lane. You're crazy, Homer.
- 5:35Homer. Not as if foxes back categories
- 5:38are so much better than the Hudsons.
- 5:39Though, right? No, none of.
- 5:40Those locker cats. So lucky those shoot.
- 5:42I was gonna say, other than doggy shooting, none of these
- 5:44guys really do bad cats. Yeah, I mean, I I also feel like
- 5:48him not getting picked for Team USA kind of lived a little bit
- 5:51of a fire under his behind. And you know, 66 points in 82
- 5:55games in his rookie season is just so fire.
- 5:57And he wasn't lucky one for most of that.
- 5:59That's true. Exactly, exactly.
- 6:01And there's no way develops and takes that.
- 6:03We've spoken about that extensively.
- 6:04So I think that's huge. Fox to me is like right there
- 6:07with him. And I think those two are kind
- 6:09of above the rest, which is so fun.
- 6:11I think mostly just talked me into Hudson as.
- 6:13Yeah, welcome to the of. I was like if next year there's
- 6:20any guys that are under honorable mentions that I could
- 6:23see being in the top ten and probably be Fox and Hudson and
- 6:26then we probably maybe you know, the guys in the top 9:50 to 6:00
- 6:32on this list be bumped off potentially.
- 6:34It is nice to see though that once we get into the top ten,
- 6:36you can see there's a clear difference between those back
- 6:39categories and that's kind of what boosts all these guys.
- 6:41I do believe that hunting and fox can finish higher than
- 6:45decent amount of these guys on the list, but for points
- 6:49specifically nevertheless for bangers, I mean this, this top
- 6:52ten list is strong. So let's begin with. #10.
- 6:57And #10 we've got the bane of my existence from last year, but.
- 7:03Also alliteration. Nothing.
- 7:05But also one of the biggest studs in terms of handsomeness
- 7:09in the league, Roman Yosi of the National Predators.
- 7:12He definitely gives Ben Sharat a run for his money.
- 7:15With his looks, but definitely. One of the most polarizing
- 7:20players this year. Yeah, last year you put up .72
- 7:22points per game .32 power play points, 2.8 shots, 1.8 blocks.
- 7:27Until last year he was a second round pick.
- 7:28Like no questions asked. Everyone knew that he was top
- 7:31three defence went off the board.
- 7:34But we've talked about OC a lot on the podcast.
- 7:37You know, he had a pretty brutal year last year.
- 7:39It ended with a huge injury and he's a year older.
- 7:43The injuries lingering, we don't know what to expect.
- 7:45So that's why he's dropped down all the way to the top to #10
- 7:48but he's still an amazing shooter and an amazing point
- 7:50guy. I mean, power play still firing
- 7:53on all cylinders even though the team sucked.
- 7:54So. So yeah, what do you guys think?
- 7:57I mean, listen, I'm paying like a lot of attention to what
- 8:00people are talking about in regards to Yoshi, and I don't
- 8:05see many people worried about the injury too much.
- 8:07I feel like we're not gonna say we're the only ones on it, but I
- 8:11think we're the only ones really taking it into account this much
- 8:13because people still have them as like a top five defenseman.
- 8:16But the injury really seems like it's gonna be something's gonna
- 8:20nag him the whole season with potential, you know, game
- 8:24breaking downside with him just being shut down if Nashville is
- 8:27still bad, right. So I feel like it's just too.
- 8:29Risky. I don't see why you would take
- 8:31the risk if people are taking it like a top five defensemen, why
- 8:34you would take the risk on him over the next nine guys were
- 8:37about to mention you. Know and it's not only just the
- 8:39risk with the injury, but it's also like he's 35.
- 8:41He had his worst season of the of his career like in in recent
- 8:45years last year. Like .72 points is not anything
- 8:49to write home about in terms of like fantasy defence.
- 8:51Like there's a lot of guys that are doing that and, and, and
- 8:54staying healthy and not giving you like a headache.
- 8:56So I think #10 is honestly reasonable.
- 8:58Like I could see him being taken higher and he'll pay off if he's
- 9:02healthy the whole year. He plays 82 games and Nashville
- 9:05is not as bad as last year, but I just don't want to take the
- 9:07risk that high. Yeah, that's a a fair
- 9:11assessment. I think I, I will, I would feed
- 9:13him at his cost. But obviously if the price is
- 9:15right, the price is right. His back categories are decent.
- 9:18Like there's nothing wrong with that.
- 9:20So I still like his floor when he plays, and that's the biggest
- 9:25asterisk. Mean he's one of the best
- 9:26shooters as a defenseman so and even when he had his down year
- 9:29last year 2.8 shots as a defenseman is.
- 9:31Great, that's pretty elite. He should be over three like
- 9:33technically. No, it's fantastic.
- 9:36It's just, you know, if he, if he can't get over 60 games this
- 9:40year because he has to, you know, load manage, if you will,
- 9:45that's what the Preds are gonna elect to do.
- 9:47And that's a really tough spot to be as his fantasy owner,
- 9:50right? That's why, I mean, part of the
- 9:53reason that I was speaking about injury prone guys last week is
- 9:58because of these situations. It's a really big headache to
- 10:01try to manage this year, like week in and week out having
- 10:05these players. And if it's a fluke like Bark,
- 10:07Alvin Hughes, I get it, you don't wanna fade them.
- 10:10It's just been bad luck. But you'll see.
- 10:11It's literally known to be a nagging injury.
- 10:14So I'd certainly fade at cost. Nevertheless, like he does have
- 10:18the pedigree to be on this list and I think 10 is the really
- 10:20good spot for him. Is there anybody in the
- 10:22honorable mentions that you come draft time like you'd be willing
- 10:26to take over him? I just think the upside of him,
- 10:30of the entry not being as bad as we think, it's too high to take
- 10:34any of the honorable mentions over him because if he does, you
- 10:38know, play the entire season, he's gonna get you 3 plus shots
- 10:41on goal, almost two blocks and he's gonna get you the points
- 10:43and power play points. So I just think that the upside
- 10:46is there. So I wouldn't take any of the
- 10:48honorable mentions over him. I don't know what you guys
- 10:50think. Yeah.
- 10:51So frankly, I, I, I think I would just take a forward
- 10:54instead, you know what I mean? Like so.
- 10:57So no, I wouldn't, but I would just I I'm what's his ADP,
- 11:01right? Now, yeah, I was gonna say his
- 11:02ADP right now is 60.5. The guys that are going around
- 11:06him forward wise, Sebastian Aho is right behind him in ADP 62.5.
- 11:12And this is like basic Yahoo ADP, you know, like standard
- 11:14kind of just Yahoo default settings.
- 11:17Yeah, it's a whole wide Johnston, Dylan Larkin, easy.
- 11:23These are guys going after him. Technically in ADP before him,
- 11:26you got a bunch of goalies. You have cold Cofield know
- 11:30Brandon Hagel, his ADP have 54, Adrian Kempe.
- 11:33So he's like right in that zone where he's probably going to be
- 11:36like a fifth round pick in terms of like 80 people in a standard
- 11:40like 12 team league. I don't know if I take him
- 11:43there. No, yeah, there's no way.
- 11:44It feels like there's too many, yeah, there's too many sure
- 11:47things there to take a risk. Like the only reason is let's
- 11:50say you spent your first four picks on non defensemen and he's
- 11:54the best defenseman available. You're like, I need to take ad
- 11:56at #5 Then you know, I could see it.
- 11:59But. Are you comfortable with him as
- 12:01as your first defenseman for your team fantasy team?
- 12:05During the team, yeah. But like, if I'm a I think at
- 12:09that point I'd rather just go for points upside and like a
- 12:11Cofield and take a Agoutis later on and just just enforce my back
- 12:16categories. Yeah, there's also something to
- 12:19be said for sure. OK, So in general, you mean
- 12:22like, I, I mean, I, I guess, but still not at that cost.
- 12:25Like I would just rather all those guys for sure.
- 12:27There's also something to be said about a 35 year old, which
- 12:29is not young for the NHL, adjusting his tile of play in
- 12:33order to mitigate the injury, right?
- 12:34Who knows how effective he's actually going to be like these.
- 12:37That doesn't show up on the stat sheet, but it is something
- 12:40that's relevant to how he performs.
- 12:43Yeah. One like you see.
- 12:45This. This young stud over here with
- 12:48the best first name in the NHL unbiased we have. #9 #9 We have
- 12:57Jake Sanderson of the Ottawa Senators.
- 13:01Last year he put up .71 points per game, .38 power play points,
- 13:042.4 shots and two blocks. That's like compared to like
- 13:11compared to Yoshi, you know, like points wise, they had the
- 13:13same points per game, power play points.
- 13:15Anderson had more shots there, like around the same blocks
- 13:18around the same, you know, but like Yoshi's like on the
- 13:20downtrend and Sanderson is on the uptrend.
- 13:22You know, like you're seeing Yoshi.
- 13:23This is his worst season yet. Sandersons like his best season
- 13:26yet. But like there's more to come.
- 13:28The entire team is getting better.
- 13:29He's getting better and it's just a super, super exciting
- 13:33pickup and I think everyone kind of knows about him.
- 13:35I don't think he's like, you know, some sneaky one, but maybe
- 13:39his name values not there with some of the big is just yet and
- 13:41you can get him at A at a kind of a steal in the draft.
- 13:44Absolutely. Yeah, I completely agree.
- 13:47I think he's gonna return and then someone draft value.
- 13:49Also, if you're in a keeper league like I'm in one where I
- 13:52have him, I think pick 10 from last year, I would
- 13:54wholeheartedly consider keeping him.
- 13:56He's in a great position to succeed on the Senators team
- 14:00that all three of us believe in. I think we're all super hyped
- 14:03about what we think they're going to do this year.
- 14:06More on that in our Atlantic Vision breakdown, Atlantic
- 14:08Division breakdown that's going to drop later this week.
- 14:12But yeah, category coverage is their points are there.
- 14:14And a small little anecdote, three seasons in the NHL, he's
- 14:17played 7779 and 80 games. That's like pretty resilient,
- 14:22you know, in that that's a good sign.
- 14:26Yeah, I think the biggest thing that stands out to me when you
- 14:29look at his stats from last years is power play production,
- 14:31.38 power play points and .72 overall points.
- 14:35That means he's getting over half of his points are on the
- 14:38power play, which just tells US1 Ottawa has an elite power play.
- 14:42He's integral to that power play.
- 14:45And we all expect Ottawa to take a jump from last year to this
- 14:48year. Like we saw them already
- 14:49improved tremendously last year and be like a quote UN quote,
- 14:51like a playoff contender type of team.
- 14:53And this year we, I mean, a lot of people are picking on just be
- 14:56in the playoffs this year, right?
- 14:57So I think it all fuels like funnels through Sanderson as
- 15:01like the offensive defenseman on this team.
- 15:04If the other guys on this team take a step up, Ottawa in
- 15:06general will be much better. I can see him be a point per
- 15:08game and averaging .35 power play points and it just be like
- 15:12a month or year for Jake Sanderson.
- 15:14He's his ADP is in the realm of the honorable mentions that we
- 15:18mentioned, not in this top 10. So I think out of all the guys
- 15:21that were going to talk about today, he's the guy getting
- 15:23drafted the latest and he's the guy that potentially may take
- 15:27the highest jump in value going into next season.
- 15:29Yeah, he's gonna be really, really good pick.
- 15:31I think .72 is floored this year.
- 15:34Yeah, same. Not give it away, but I would
- 15:36rather him over this next guy as my one defenseman.
- 15:41Like I understand why the next guy is the next guy.
- 15:43We'll get to it in a second. Nevertheless, I'm super, super
- 15:46high on him and he was drafted to be the guy and he's
- 15:50delivering as the guy, right? Like and that's he's young.
- 15:54He's he's 23 years old. I mean the defenseman only tend
- 15:58to peak when they're older anyways, so it just seems like
- 16:01it's all uphill. The fact that he's only 23, I
- 16:04did not realize that. Yeah, crazy.
- 16:07Because we headed down the pipeline for awhile and the fact
- 16:09that it finally has come to fruition and there's still so
- 16:12much upside. That's it.
- 16:13The next few years, he's just gonna keep climbing and climbing
- 16:16in these draft rankings. Yep, the 2020 draft, they they
- 16:21had that like amazing pick because you know, when they
- 16:24traded Carl Eric Carlson years before to the Sharks, they ended
- 16:27up basically like on the Sharks ended up not being good.
- 16:30Whatever. Senators had three and five that
- 16:34year and they took Stitzel and Sanderson.
- 16:36This was 2020, which was supposed to be known as the
- 16:39Lafreniere Giraffe, but it's shaping up to be the Sanderson
- 16:43Stitzel draft. We'll see what happens this
- 16:47year, but yeah, I love it. So let's move on to. #8.
- 16:53Great. We've got Victor Hedman of the
- 16:56Tampa Bay Lightning. Last year he put up .84 points
- 16:58per game, .33 power play points, 2.3 shots and 1.7 blocks.
- 17:03And it's hard not to like the power play.
- 17:05One quarterback who gets to play with Kucherov, he chips in in
- 17:08shots and blocks and just has a great point ceiling because you
- 17:11got to play with arguably the best points guy in the league.
- 17:14You're going to benefit from it. Yeah, but two, Dickey's point, I
- 17:19feel like it's definitely very close with Sanderson and Hedman.
- 17:21I think the edge just you give it to Hedman because he plays
- 17:24with the guy who might win the art Ross again.
- 17:28Um, and at any point, you know, the power play can pop off.
- 17:32I will say though, with with headman, there's definitely an
- 17:34asterisk, asterisk next to it next to his name, because we saw
- 17:38last year he had kind of slumps of production where he just
- 17:42wasn't delivering on his draft capital.
- 17:45So I wouldn't be surprised if we have that again this year.
- 17:47But I think everybody on this podcast is pretty high on Tampa
- 17:49going into this year with them having the least questions in
- 17:52terms of, you know, staying at the top in in their division.
- 17:57I could see Sanderson overtaking him this year, but for the
- 18:01moment, going into the drafts, I think Hedman deserves the edge.
- 18:04Yeah, I say for bad. Yeah, it's a safer bet because
- 18:08like in our heads, we're projecting Sanderson to do what
- 18:10had been already done multiple times.
- 18:12But I will say, so like pure value wise, I'm going Hedman,
- 18:15but value at where you can draft them, I'm taking Sanderson
- 18:18because if you can get Sanderson like a round or two after
- 18:20Headman gets taken, that's huge. Like Hedman in the 4th or
- 18:25Sanderson in the 5th. Give me Sanderson in the. 5th
- 18:27yeah, 100%. So it really just depends on
- 18:30your league and where they're getting drafted.
- 18:31I think Hedman still has a name value where people are gonna
- 18:33reach on him. Not necessarily quote UN quote
- 18:35reach on him, but like they know he's a proven power play 1
- 18:39defence, been one of the best teams in the league.
- 18:41He will get drafted. You know somebody will be
- 18:43looking down their ADP when the run on defenseman goes and
- 18:46they'll probably select them before Sanderson, but sounds it
- 18:48might be the better pick at the end of the day.
- 18:51He plays with cultural and cultural can drop 140 points, so
- 18:54you want exposure to that. Yeah, the coach is why we're
- 18:58like one of the reasons we're also like super high on Hagel
- 19:00like for this year, like with him transitioning to the power
- 19:03play 1 and there's no question that had been is the guy.
- 19:06I mean, if you look at his stats, there were some years
- 19:09where he had quote, UN quote down year and that's when
- 19:13Sergachev was the power play guy, right?
- 19:16I don't see that happening with anybody on their roster right
- 19:19now. Like they don't have anyone
- 19:21who's gonna take that power, play one him, I mean.
- 19:23There's some say give some respect to Darren Radish out
- 19:27here. Yeah.
- 19:28Oh my God, yeah. It's just the reason I'm
- 19:30encouraged for Hedman is because they've tried it with radish and
- 19:34it doesn't. Last year was scary because we
- 19:37did see Reddish have that P1 for like a couple weeks here and
- 19:41there and I had traded for Hedman and did not see any
- 19:45return for a few weeks. So definitely scary.
- 19:48But I mean, he's the guy. It's it's Victor Hedman, you
- 19:50know, Yeah. And they?
- 19:51Do it. It doesn't stay though, like
- 19:53with him, you know, like it doesn't stay with radish.
- 19:56Whereas with with Sergachev, that was that was annoying.
- 19:59Yeah, like Victor and not loser, you know.
- 20:02Exactly. Good point, Josh.
- 20:04We didn't even mention that. Yes.
- 20:05Yeah. And there's a reason Daren is
- 20:08radish and not turnip. Exactly because when they need
- 20:13it most, he doesn't turn up. Let's go.
- 20:18Got it. I didn't even get it when I
- 20:19said. It I got you.
- 20:21We finish each other's sandwiches.
- 20:24There you go. Oh man, yeah.
- 20:30Wow, thank you for that. You.
- 20:31You really helped me with the recovery.
- 20:33I did not know where it was. Alright, cool, let's move on to
- 20:40the next one. #7. At #7 we've got Mackenzie Weeger
- 20:46of the Calgary Flames. Last year he put up .58 points
- 20:50per game .26 power play points, 2.3 shots, 2.8 hits, 2.4 blocks.
- 20:56That's the old 222. close to three on the hits here.
- 21:00He's here for the bad cats, he's here for the back cats while
- 21:03also being a power play one quarterback.
- 21:05He's obviously even with that deployment, he's not the biggest
- 21:07points down the list, but when you have a guy who's
- 21:09contributing 2 plus on all three of those bad categories and
- 21:13getting you points in power play points, it's hard not to love
- 21:16him. Obviously the biggest question
- 21:17is can he keep that power play one?
- 21:20I know people are questioning if Perec could come in as a rookie
- 21:23and take that spot from him, but like, even without the power
- 21:27play he's still putting up those crazy back cats.
- 21:29So he's still someone you're super happy to have on your
- 21:32team. Obviously that is something to
- 21:33consider, but he's still one of the top defensemen in the
- 21:36league. Yeah, I think.
- 21:38Definitely see him. Sorry, go.
- 21:39Ahead, no, OK, the biggest thing with with, you know, Uyghur is
- 21:44he's one of the most elite banger category defensemen.
- 21:47And this is really where we see the just the banger influence
- 21:51come into come into play here. But I don't know if Calgary is a
- 21:57top power play team or they're like a middle of the pack power
- 21:59play and they might also split their kind of power play units
- 22:02as well. So that's something to keep in
- 22:04mind. If Pereg or Anderson takes that
- 22:07spot, obviously he loses some value, but he's still one of the
- 22:09guys that always has the strong foundation of being the category
- 22:12monster is just where you draft him.
- 22:14Does he? Is it worth taking a guy like
- 22:16that if he's gonna get like .45 points and like .10 power play
- 22:21points if he's on P2, quote, UN quote, let's say?
- 22:24Obviously that's not what we believe and that's why he's so
- 22:26high up on our rankings. But it's definitely something to
- 22:28keep in mind. I think Rasmus Anderson can get
- 22:30traded. I don't think Paris is ready for
- 22:32the NHL. So I'm comfortable taking a
- 22:34weaker where he's going in drafts and I think he's like an
- 22:36elite cornerstone asset to have in like your fantasy drafts,
- 22:40specifically in Bangor leagues. Obviously that's what we're
- 22:43facing here. Yeah, so if you look, since he
- 22:48got traded to Calgary, weighers had 21 minutes, 23 minutes and
- 22:5124 minutes of ice time if Anderson.
- 22:55Leader Games. Per game last season that would
- 22:58be That would be quite the hourly wage.
- 23:05So. Sign me up.
- 23:06Yeah, per game. And those three seasons he he's
- 23:09played basically a full season, which is amazing to see.
- 23:12You know, at that point, I would say ice time for him is even
- 23:17more valuable than power play one.
- 23:19If Anderson does get traded and Weiger goes to like 27 minutes
- 23:24of ice time per night, I would almost rather that than him
- 23:28having power play one. Of course, if he has both,
- 23:30that's like incredible. And then I think he shoots up on
- 23:32this list up to the like, you know, number four or five.
- 23:36But if even if he gets it away, like I think Anderson going and
- 23:41weaker, just stepping into an even bigger role is a huge
- 23:43catalyst for it to him to succeed even more.
- 23:45And if none of those things happen, if he's still on power
- 23:50play 2 and Anderson stays on the team but he's still getting 24
- 23:54minutes of ice time, that I'm still happy with him where he's
- 23:56ranked on this list. His like it just feels like just
- 23:59super. Hot, Amazing.
- 24:00Exactly. It's fantastic.
- 24:03So I feel like if you dropped him, he's one of those guys that
- 24:06he's safe, it's a good pick and there's nowhere he could go but
- 24:10up. The thing is like you're going
- 24:12in and you're drafting him right?
- 24:13And last year he put up, he had power on all year.
- 24:15He put up like .6 points, right? So you draft him expecting that
- 24:18.6 points like .25 power play points and then the crazy
- 24:21bangers. You know, let's say he loses the
- 24:23power play once, but let's say he drops down to .4 points per
- 24:25game from the .6, you know, but he still putting up those elite
- 24:28bangers. You're not like, I can't believe
- 24:30I took this guy, you know, like that .2 points is the entire
- 24:32difference. But in his value it's like no,
- 24:34he's still winning. You like 3 cats a week, you
- 24:37know, Like it's just, he's the type of guy you just look at his
- 24:40like game sheet after every game and you're just like smiling
- 24:43that he's on your team or you're playing against him and you're
- 24:45like, well, he just put up six hits and six blocks and like
- 24:47four shots. So this is a real stat line he
- 24:50had against me last year, you know, like, OK, cool.
- 24:53You know, like, oh, he didn't chip in a point this game.
- 24:55Oh, wow, you know what a bust, you know, like, so so that's
- 24:59what it is with like the floor just being so, so high.
- 25:01So yeah, I really love this big. I was gonna say if there's room
- 25:05to grow too in terms of points, 2.6 is definitely I would say on
- 25:09the conservative side of like maybe it's the median outcome of
- 25:12what we can expect. But I would not be surprised if
- 25:14he gets the .75 this year. And you know, Calgary slightly
- 25:17better. They have a lot more young
- 25:18talent on the team and you know, there are team that's a fringe
- 25:21playoff contender and you know, he contributes more on the power
- 25:24play. Like that would not shock me.
- 25:25It's in the realm of outcomes. But you know that the foundation
- 25:28is so strong and it's not flashy to draft a guy like this, right?
- 25:31Because you're like, Oh no, we really value the points.
- 25:33And that's the thing that we kind of see on the statute and
- 25:35whatnot. When you look open your fantasy
- 25:38app and you see him have three shots, three, his three blocks
- 25:41in your category league, it just, I don't know, for me, it
- 25:44fills me up with joy. Yeah, yeah, I don't wig.
- 25:47You'll fill me up with something else too if you keep doing that.
- 25:51Like. I we simply have to edit that
- 25:54out that can. Not like that.
- 26:00This is why his team name is going to be Alabama Cousins.
- 26:02You know that's why he gets kicked out of every arena
- 26:07wearing his daddy bark off shirt.
- 26:11Wow, you guys are really turning on me.
- 26:13I did not expect this. Yeah, You know, I was gonna say
- 26:16I feel like Wigger is the defenseman version of Trocheck,
- 26:21you know? Yeah, you.
- 26:22Him or the guys were gonna talk about right ahead of him.
- 26:26Him and the guy we're gonna talk about.
- 26:28Yeah, very similar. Honestly, similar archetypes
- 26:30will get into it, but I like this next guy.
- 26:34Wiggers got hella strong facial hair but I feel like no matter
- 26:37what I say it fawning over him, I cannot match that level that
- 26:40you just did. So yeah, let's move on before
- 26:44Kevin says anything else, yeah? All right, let's go to.
- 26:49Number six. Number six, we have the brother
- 26:53of Dixon Moritz Cider, Detroit Red Wings.
- 27:00Last year he put up .56 points .29 power play points, two
- 27:04shots, 2.6 hits and 2.2 blocks. That's insane.
- 27:09First of all, he is he's like weaker except that he's
- 27:12guaranteed power play 1 and he has more points upside.
- 27:16So that's why he's one spot ahead.
- 27:18He's just unbelievable in every category and he is still super
- 27:22young and can only move upwards as the team gets better as he
- 27:24gets better. I mean he's he's the guy who
- 27:27like the year if you pick him the year that he pops, you know,
- 27:30.8 points game while putting those back cats you're laughing
- 27:32your way to the bank. Yeah, I would definitely take
- 27:36him ahead of weaker this year specifically because I mean, we
- 27:40saw it in the progression of his, you know, development as a
- 27:42talent. He blew up initially.
- 27:45You know, him and Raymond got the big contracts together and
- 27:48then they didn't really, they weren't really happy with the
- 27:50power play quarterbacking. So they signed, they had gossip
- 27:53spare. They've had other guys kind of
- 27:55come here and fill in that spot, but they're back to cider and
- 27:59he's the guy now. Like they want him to be the
- 28:01guy. He's been given the opportunity.
- 28:04There's no one that can take that spot from him and I think
- 28:06they're really lays the foundation for his value this
- 28:08season, especially with all the category coverage he has.
- 28:11Like just like we, he's a walking triple. 22 shots, two
- 28:14hits, two blocks is the minimum that you can expect from him,
- 28:17and the ceiling is so much higher if Detroit is Tina wants
- 28:20to make the playoffs this season, like the power play will
- 28:22need to improve and he's going to get more points.
- 28:25Yeah, and compared to his career averages, like he's played, he
- 28:30has not missed a game in four NHL seasons and in those seasons
- 28:34he has not cracked ten goals one time.
- 28:38That feels like an easy thing that he can at least get 15
- 28:42goals, you know what I mean? Like maybe even 20 because he's
- 28:45gonna have so much deployment and he's the centre speeds on
- 28:48that stage. As you mentioned, Kevin, they
- 28:50had other defensemen that they were able to rock on that first
- 28:54power play. I guess Gustafson, if all things
- 28:57fail, like like if if Cider is just offensively incompetent,
- 29:01like I guess they can put him there, but they want to make it
- 29:04work with Cider. You don't give a guy that
- 29:06contract and and not make him your centerpiece.
- 29:09So I'm very excited to see what you can do this year.
- 29:12Yeah, he's gonna be sick. He's gonna be cider or beer.
- 29:18Alright, let's move on. I mean, I guarantee he'll be
- 29:24Slider this year, yeah. But how will he compared to his
- 29:28brother Dixon? And also, OK, I mean, I'm just
- 29:33looking at this Detroit defensive core and it's not good
- 29:37at all. Like I'm kind of worried for
- 29:38their capacities as a team this year.
- 29:40So yeah, Slider might be one of the only fantasy like super
- 29:44relevant defensive options. Yeah, man, poor John Gibson, eh?
- 29:50Right when Anaheim's getting good, they're like, yeah, let's
- 29:53ship you off to another like bottom team.
- 29:55Yeah, who was like, yeah, you're you're right.
- 29:57They've got such a bad decor. I really think their offence is
- 30:00good. So for fantasy, this may be a
- 30:03pretty under the radar team if you pick assets from this team.
- 30:06I think Raymond Larkin Cider of course, I've spoken about
- 30:10Casper. I'm pretty high on him as well.
- 30:13And like, if they end up letting in a lot of goals, that's gonna
- 30:17be really, really nice for all these players, offensive
- 30:20production. And I definitely think Cider is
- 30:21part of that equation. So it's gonna suck as a Red
- 30:26Wings fan, probably. But as a fantasy player, you're
- 30:29having a good time. And there's definitely tears to
- 30:32these defensemen rankings, like we said before we got started,
- 30:35but I think Wigger and Cider are in their own tier in terms of
- 30:39like banger category coverage defensemen.
- 30:42Like they're the 2 elite guys and there's no other guys that
- 30:44come close to, you know, being a triple double like they are and
- 30:47contributing on the power play. But this top five is pretty
- 30:51stacked in terms of points and shots.
- 30:54Yeah, I feel like any one of these next 5 can end up, well,
- 30:59especially the next three could end up with like their points
- 31:03interchangeable, you know what I mean?
- 31:04I feel like all of them can hit 70.
- 31:06Yeah, so let's talk about #5. At #5 we've got Evan Bouchard of
- 31:13the Edmonton Oilers last year put up .82 points, .32 power
- 31:17play points, 2.9 shots and 1.3 blocks.
- 31:20Kind of like with Headman, I got to start off with like popular
- 31:23one quarterback with McDavid and Draisaitl.
- 31:25What else do you really have to say?
- 31:26You know, he's an elite shooter. He's going to be one of the few
- 31:28defensemen who's gonna get you 3 plus shots on goal per game.
- 31:31And he just signed a 4 * 10.5 mil contract.
- 31:33And something that I've said and I'll continue to say and I've
- 31:36said pretty much since I was born his follow that money baby.
- 31:39You know, So not not that it was ever not that it was ever in
- 31:42question about, you know, who's gonna be powerful on
- 31:44quarterback, but you know, something to be said there about
- 31:46that contract as well. Yeah, yeah, like logistically
- 31:50what's cool about him for their power play is that he's a
- 31:53right-handed shot, which is huge because both McDavid and
- 31:57Draisaitl are lefties. So he and nudge by the way.
- 32:01So like their their top playmakers on that power play
- 32:05are all lefties and they need to pass to somebody who could have
- 32:08a big one timer. And Bush bomb.
- 32:12This is the guy and like that they needed for for a while and
- 32:16they finally got it and they they just super happy to make it
- 32:20work with him. Obviously there's no one else
- 32:22who they're gonna put on power play one over him.
- 32:25There's just no way. And you know he hasn't he hit a
- 32:29point per game two years ago. Last season he regressed a
- 32:31little bit but I would not be surprised if he gets over 20
- 32:34goals and, you know, 85 points. I mean, we also, awesome.
- 32:38We also all think that Mcdavid's gonna have a bounce back here
- 32:41this year. Yep.
- 32:42And when that happens, Bouchard's gonna be 1 of the
- 32:44biggest beneficiaries of that. Is there a way that this power
- 32:48play gets like .5 points per game?
- 32:50Like in general on average between their their main, you
- 32:52know, fantasy assets? Like David Dreidel and Bouchard,
- 32:55I could see them all getting .5. Which would be nuts.
- 32:58Yeah, if he gets .5 like I, I just, I mean, that's, that's
- 33:02crazy. If you guys .5, I think he
- 33:04belongs like a little higher on this list.
- 33:05But yeah, I'd say like 4 feels safe to say, and even that's
- 33:11unreal. Like I think .5 is like,
- 33:13obviously like the ceiling, but I think it's doable.
- 33:15You know, there's not a lot of guys who I'd be like, yeah,
- 33:17that's possible. But with him, I think it's.
- 33:18Possible. There's like 3 guys that I would
- 33:20say it's probably possible, Yeah, the two guys that are on
- 33:23the top of this list and Bouchard.
- 33:25Basically, like in practice, that means you have a defenseman
- 33:28on your team that every single time you're watching the Oilers,
- 33:33if they get 2 power plays, you're guaranteed point and
- 33:35power play point. Yeah, that's crazy.
- 33:37I will say, if you do get lucky enough to get McDavid or
- 33:40tricycle in the first round, I love pairing one of those guys
- 33:43with Bouchard. That's why did last year at
- 33:45dryland Bouchard and like that's one of those stacks that I love
- 33:48to have because like I we had mentioned in previous episode,
- 33:51you know, like you're already so dependent on that power play and
- 33:54team working out. Why not just double it up?
- 33:56Especially because the odds are so high that it's gonna be
- 33:58amazing. Yeah, we talked about this on
- 34:00the Draft Tips episode, so if you haven't listened to that, go
- 34:02check it out. But we just talked about how
- 34:05stacks can really raise the ceiling for your fantasy team on
- 34:07any given week. You don't want to force a stack
- 34:09in the middle of your draft, but if you compare a guy like
- 34:11McDavid and Bouchard, you just know that on any given week,
- 34:15they can both pop off together and when you that week.
- 34:17So just raises your ceiling overall for each fantasy week
- 34:20for head to head matchups. And honestly, it's great to have
- 34:22and it's so fun to watch too, when you're when you're, when
- 34:24you're watching the game. Especially every time it goes to
- 34:27overtime, it's McDavid, Drysol and Bouchard on the ice, you
- 34:29know, and they always score in overtime.
- 34:32So you're like alright, sick overtime guaranteed 2 points
- 34:34here. The thing with Bouchard that we
- 34:36need to mention is obviously an elite.
- 34:38Shooter. Sucks at defence.
- 34:40He's an elite shooter, so he's basically giving you forward
- 34:42stats from the defenseman position, which is very valuable
- 34:45because you don't that's very rare to have.
- 34:47So he'll get over three shots in game.
- 34:49I think this upcoming year, his power play, I think a safe
- 34:52expectation is maybe 4. If we're expecting an overall
- 34:55bounce back by the Oilers. You can get close to a point per
- 34:58game or over a point per game. I would not be shocked by that.
- 35:01The biggest thing this year though is his draft cost is
- 35:04matching all these expectations. His ADP currently is 20.
- 35:08That's in the middle of the second round.
- 35:09Are you taking him that high? I think I would take him that
- 35:13high if I got McDavid or dry Sidal, but otherwise I probably
- 35:16wouldn't. Yeah, a lot of people don't
- 35:19wanna do. They realize that that's their
- 35:20first, first and second round pick.
- 35:22Obviously just advantages of that like we just spoke about,
- 35:24you know, the stacking and the ceiling.
- 35:25But on if the Oilers have a two game week, your first two draft
- 35:29picks combining for four games on the week, it's definitely not
- 35:33ideal. But at the end of the day, I
- 35:35think definitely it's fun. I think a little bit too rich
- 35:38for me though, like Jack Hughes or Evan Bouchard.
- 35:42Yeah, Hughes. Yeah, Forsberg or or Evan
- 35:45Bouchard. Yeah, Forsberg.
- 35:48Panera's ADP is 30. But I mean, it's also like
- 35:51something that he said about just the position, right?
- 35:53Yeah, like the defenseman is gonna like dry up so fast like
- 35:57these top, top tier guys. So.
- 35:59But like I said, for me, it's really just the stacker or I'm
- 36:02not interested. But that is ADP.
- 36:04Obviously if you was going around lower, I'm all over that.
- 36:07I think he's more of a third round pick for me.
- 36:09Panera is an interesting 1 though, because if I do have dry
- 36:12saddle or McDavid and then I end up pairing with Bouchard instead
- 36:16of a Panera and then later on I'm faced with, you know, Hedman
- 36:20or Caulfield, I think I'd rather go the dry Sidal Panera, sorry,
- 36:24dry Sydal, Bouchard, Cofield route, then dry Seidel, Panarin,
- 36:31Hedman. You know what I'm saying?
- 36:33Yeah, I feel like, I feel like if if the guy you're choosing
- 36:36between is like maybe more pure points with like 3 to 3.5 shots,
- 36:42that's where I find Hughes is better than Panera, probably
- 36:44because you couldn't shoot 4 plus, which is a big advantage.
- 36:48But nevertheless, like I'm I'm on the train of like, I really
- 36:51like what you said, Josh with the stack.
- 36:54So that's kind of the only time I would take him over like a a
- 36:58forward that's gonna end up with more points.
- 37:00Yeah. Alright, let's go into #4.
- 37:05At #4 we've got one of the bright lights of Jake's last
- 37:09season and have a lot of people's fantasy season who had
- 37:12him because it looked like a lot of fun.
- 37:15We've got Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets last year.
- 37:181.1 points per game .31 power play points. 3.7 shots per game.
- 37:23That's insane. 1.6 blocks. He is, in my opinion, the
- 37:28defenseman with the highest risk but highest reward.
- 37:31Last year, his first full season since 2018, he went crazy in
- 37:35points and shots on goal. Can he repeat it this year or
- 37:38was Columbus a fluke? If you guessed right or wrong,
- 37:41it could have a massive impact on your draft.
- 37:43What do you guys think? The reason I think that he's
- 37:47here instead of Bouchard is because we all believe that they
- 37:50can. Even if they regress a little
- 37:53bit, Columbus can still be a very good team if until he's up
- 37:55and coming, Marchenko is only going to be better.
- 37:57Voronkov's stud, you know, like all their players like, looked
- 38:01like they can really be a great part of their future.
- 38:03And Werenski's that centerpiece. He plays so many minutes a
- 38:06night. He does so many great things for
- 38:08them. I definitely think Bouchard's a
- 38:10quote safer pick, but for the higher ceiling I'm happier with
- 38:13Werenski this year. The reason for me that I that we
- 38:16have, you know, warrants you over Bouchard is the shots like
- 38:19Werenski is one of the few guys that can get close to four shots
- 38:22a game and that's. Just a defenseman or just in
- 38:25general, I guess, yeah. Yeah, it's just nonsense to have
- 38:27that from a defenseman. I think the big talk with Renski
- 38:31is people are forgetting how injury prone this guy is, right?
- 38:34Like he's hasn't played a full season in so long last.
- 38:37Yeah. Yeah.
- 38:38So last year we saw, you know, he was on the ice a lot and he
- 38:41contributed. But does he do it again?
- 38:45Does he stay healthy? There's definitely a lot of
- 38:47questions. I think a lot of people are not
- 38:48buying into this Columbus resurgence.
- 38:50But I think it's gonna be close to what he was later than what
- 38:52he was two years ago. I think Columbus is the real
- 38:54deal. I think they have a lot of young
- 38:56talent that is poised to take a step up and raise like the
- 38:59overall kind of point ceiling of this team.
- 39:01And Werenski is integral to that.
- 39:02Like he was getting Hart Trophy votes last year because of how
- 39:06important he was to this Columbus team and how he was
- 39:09performing on the ice. I genuinely think like he's an
- 39:12amazing defenseman is just can he stay healthy?
- 39:15And if he can, when he's on the ice, he will be elite for
- 39:18fantasy. Will he do what he did last
- 39:20year? I don't know.
- 39:22You're also drafting him close to his ceiling.
- 39:24That's another question. Like he's going back-to-back
- 39:26with Evan Bouchard and drafts. Who would you rather have?
- 39:29Obviously like us, We we like Werenski, but both of them, you
- 39:32know, it wouldn't be crazy to have one over the other.
- 39:34But it's still rich. So I don't know.
- 39:35Are you taking him in your drafts out?
- 39:37Honestly, I honestly don't know if I have the guts, you know,
- 39:39like let's say it's around 2, right, and I'm have to pick a
- 39:42defenseman because in my mind that's how I'm doing my draft
- 39:45and these guys are both there. Let's take round two, you know,
- 39:48and it just makes sense to take one of them.
- 39:50Wronski has the upside. It's like you said, the shots
- 39:52for me is the biggest thing. And Bush is a great shooter.
- 39:54You know, he's like a three plus shooter, but four plus from a
- 39:57defenseman of all things is just absolutely.
- 40:00Inserted like if he does what he did last year, he absolutely
- 40:03deserves to be at that EDP, if not higher.
- 40:05But that's a big if, right? And so I feel much safer with
- 40:08Bouchard, but I think the upside Oransky is much higher.
- 40:10So I guess a lot of it is based on your risk tolerance.
- 40:13So I don't, I don't know if I have the guts to to go Arensky
- 40:16over Bouchard at that spot. You had them on your team, like
- 40:19how many 6 point games did you have last year?
- 40:23It was so, so fun. I wish we were in a keeper
- 40:25league because he's the easiest choice I would have.
- 40:28Ever had you got him like around 14 or?
- 40:30Something, yeah, I think it was just 1314.
- 40:32It was amazing. I was like, that was the best,
- 40:35one of the best Rois in any. But it just goes to show like,
- 40:39he was going so late because we haven't seen him like, you know,
- 40:43be healthy for long stretches. Yeah, for sure.
- 40:46It's what you can do here. That's pretty cool is that you
- 40:50can do the stack, but he's gonna be the first Columbus player off
- 40:54the board. Right.
- 40:55Yeah, absolutely. So, yeah, so if you believe in
- 40:57them and if you actually want to do this, I get it.
- 41:00If you have Dry Settle or McDavid wanting to stack
- 41:02Bouchard at round two, let's say over Werenski.
- 41:05But then if you pick Werenski, you can put Marchenko.
- 41:08And I think that those are like the two guys that are definitely
- 41:10going to be on the 1st power play.
- 41:12Even Chantilly, who's maybe not going to start there but could
- 41:15be a mainstay, you know, like you could do a lot.
- 41:17And we're Renski's just always on the ice.
- 41:20He does not leave. He plays so much.
- 41:23So just knowing that you have a player.
- 41:25And to me, ice time and floor go hand in hand.
- 41:29I love his floor. And even if Columbus does
- 41:32regress a little bit and he gets 70 points instead of 82, I'm not
- 41:37mad about it because it shows are gonna be there.
- 41:39I'm less worried about them regressing because like you
- 41:42said, regardless, he's gonna be an elite shooter, blocker,
- 41:45probably whatever. Like he's gonna do all this
- 41:47stuff if he does it slightly less than last year, it's fine.
- 41:49I guess it's a lot of it is also the injury history, right?
- 41:52Like we've talked about that a lot.
- 41:53Like when do you value that? Like when do you count that?
- 41:55When do you not? And we often said, right, that
- 41:57that's what we use as a tie breaker.
- 41:59You know, it's like, don't let it affect you too much.
- 42:00But when you have like such a close decision, you know, let's
- 42:03say we're on Bouchard. Do you let that tie break you to
- 42:06Bouchard? That's that's why I don't know
- 42:08if I have the guts to go Arensky.
- 42:09It's just the cost. Obviously I would love to have
- 42:11him on my team, but it's really, it's a bit scary to take a guy
- 42:14like that. Around that spot, would you
- 42:16rather wrenching the third or weaker in the 5th?
- 42:20I think I take Warenski. I think I take Warenski in the
- 42:22third, I think Wronski's going in the 2nd and that's where I'm
- 42:25scared to take him in the third. I'd be really happy to have.
- 42:27Him cause in real drafts, right? This is his ADP on Yahoo that
- 42:31they, they published ADP data. But like in real jobs, they're
- 42:33gonna have people that don't want to draft them that high,
- 42:36and we'll probably push them closer to the third round.
- 42:38If you get them out, yeah. Pick 30, let's say like right in
- 42:41the middle of the third round. I think honestly that could be
- 42:45great value because. That's about I'm not scared to
- 42:47take him. It's really just like the second
- 42:49round. That's where I'm scared.
- 42:50Like we saw Roman Yosi be this kind of archetype of player,
- 42:53right? Like he's not a huge blocks guy,
- 42:55but like high shot volume and close to a point per game.
- 42:58Like maybe once he gets 9 points per game and 3.5 shots like
- 43:02that's still elite. The floors are so high if he
- 43:06stays healthy. Yeah, exactly.
- 43:08It's yeah, that's a tough one because I do love Uyghur, but I
- 43:12think I'm gonna I'm gonna go draw as well on this one.
- 43:17I think Warenski and the third is is amazing.
- 43:20It's just like sucks is I picked him in the 13th.
- 43:22Yeah, this is like all I have to pick.
- 43:25It was so high this. Year, anything.
- 43:27I feel like I got Gabe Vilardi in like the 12th last year.
- 43:29Yeah, you gotta pick up the second like.
- 43:31It's just so difficult. There's a nickel in the dryer
- 43:36for everyone counting back home. That's funny, this next guy is a
- 43:41bit of a bit of a Unicorn in what he does.
- 43:43I feel like other of the top five is the only one who kinda
- 43:47hits every category in an elite way.
- 43:49So let's dive into. #3. #3 We've got the one of the two only
- 43:58bright spots in this entire organization, Rasmus Dahlin of
- 44:02the Buffalo Sabres, the other one being Tage Thompson.
- 44:05Last year he put up .93 points .29 power play points 2.7.
- 44:09Shots. What about Peterka?
- 44:13Yeah, 2.7 shots, 1.4 hits and 1.3 blocks.
- 44:18It's like you guys mentioned, he touches all the categories.
- 44:21It's not like he's doing like double s on the hits and blocks.
- 44:24But the fact is that he's almost a point per game.
- 44:26He's shooting a ton and he's hitting and blocking.
- 44:29That's like, it's kind of like slightly A twist on the
- 44:32archetype of like your weaker and your cider because those
- 44:35guys have less points and are just like they do a bit of
- 44:38points while being bangers cats, beasts.
- 44:41He does a ton of points while also being very solid at the
- 44:45Bangers cats. And The thing is that he does
- 44:48this a year after year on a garbage Buffalo team.
- 44:51If they ever remotely figure it out, you know, if they get if
- 44:54they could even sniff the playoffs.
- 44:56He's easily over a point per game while putting up those back
- 44:59cats. I love him as the as the third
- 45:01on the board. I think what's so nice about
- 45:05Darlene is the fact that, like you said, he touches all the
- 45:07categories so you know, you're never going to get zeros with
- 45:09him. He's also, you know, integral to
- 45:12this Buffalo team. I feel like in recent years I've
- 45:15had, I've had a good pulse on, you know, the top defensemen in
- 45:18terms of like who to draft and went to draft them like 2 years
- 45:20ago. I took Bouchard pretty high
- 45:22before he kind of broke out. I was also in on Vince Dunn when
- 45:26he broke out last year. I took Darlene over Bouchard
- 45:28where Josh was kind of shocked that did that and I think
- 45:30Darlene ended up paying, paying off and being better for your
- 45:34fantasy teams this upcoming season.
- 45:36I think it could be his best season yet.
- 45:38Like the price is still high, obviously, but he can get close
- 45:40to a point per game and these back categories I can see him
- 45:43bumping up to hit some blocks. I think last year he needed to
- 45:46be more important to the offence of this team and that's why we
- 45:49saw the banger categories take a step back.
- 45:52But I can see this here. Him just overall would more
- 45:55experience being more involved on in the physical side of the
- 45:59game. Again, he's just such a safe
- 46:02pick. For sure, and yeah, I ended up
- 46:07with him too after our trade. And you were thrilled, right?
- 46:10I was. It was great.
- 46:11We talked about all these amazing players that I had on my
- 46:14team last year and I got first rounded in the playoffs because
- 46:18everyone was so injured. And it was.
- 46:21Horrible, awful. But yeah, like, you know, it's
- 46:28we want to believe that Buffalo can like sort of get a little
- 46:33bit better, but I feel like it's.
- 46:35Like it's hard to keep trading your.
- 46:36Place for me like 1000 billion times and it's just like
- 46:40eventually we just stop believing, you know, they get
- 46:42rid of all their top guys. Journey would be disappointed in
- 46:45you. What?
- 46:47Don't stop. Believe it.
- 46:55Nice. Little copyright strikers.
- 46:59Yeah, you know what's interesting about him is that
- 47:01he's never hit a point per game. It obviously doesn't matter
- 47:04because like with, how well-rounded, is.
- 47:06That's crazy. We have that in common.
- 47:10A point per game. I've never hit a point per game
- 47:13in the NHL either. Same.
- 47:19Yeah, but maybe, maybe this is the year.
- 47:22Honestly, who knows? It's gonna be a very probably
- 47:26depressing time to watch. Them it's gonna be about how how
- 47:29much Tage and him can carry the Buffalo Sabres to relevancy like
- 47:33and yeah, they can only do so much on their own, so yeah.
- 47:36It's tough. And exactly what Josh said.
- 47:39I mean, if they ever can do anything sort of good, somehow,
- 47:43some way, he's a part of that. He's a part of that.
- 47:47So his floor is so safe in that way because they've been God
- 47:52awful and he's still managed to be good.
- 47:56And. If they're just awful instead of
- 47:58God awful then then all the better.
- 48:01The only silver lining is he gets to play on a power play
- 48:04with Jason Zucker, and we know that guy's a beast, so.
- 48:06Yeah, that guy sucks. That guy does suck.
- 48:12But and also, you know, I was saying no, no, no.
- 48:15Words say something crazy, OK? No, no.
- 48:17No, Continue. His Yahoo ADP is 32.
- 48:21He's going 10 picks after Bouchardon, Werenski, and I
- 48:25think that's just phenomenal value.
- 48:27For your great value because I'm taking Dolly and over either of
- 48:30those guys. The category coverage in your
- 48:33managers leagues and you know the points threshold like he's
- 48:35not that far behind and either of those guys in terms of points
- 48:38and shots and I'm contributing. I'm happy to grab Dalian round
- 48:42two if I can get him round 3 by some miracle.
- 48:44I know in early that's not happening, but if you're getting
- 48:47him round three you're laughing to the bank.
- 48:50I think one thing I just wanna ask though, do you guys have any
- 48:54fear whatsoever that either Owen Power or Bowen Byram are gonna
- 48:59take your spot on the power play?
- 49:00None. Not even a little.
- 49:02Building on that question, do you think there's any way all
- 49:05three of them are on that power play?
- 49:08Defenseman power play. Honestly.
- 49:11Those four guys and teach Thompson and then, you know,
- 49:14look, once you're gonna be a joke, at least, you know, lean
- 49:16into it and make it entertaining.
- 49:17You know, I completely. Agree, they should do.
- 49:20It burn, but it's like these Darlene Byram and Power were all
- 49:26supposed to be elite, elite defenseman in the NHL.
- 49:30I mean bordering generational. Like Byron was supposed to be
- 49:34the next Macar Power was supposed to be.
- 49:36The next first overall. It's just wild, like I mean this
- 49:41is supposed to be an unreal decor and like what are they
- 49:45doing? The things are often should not
- 49:47run through your decor and they just keep trading away offensive
- 49:50pieces. Yeah.
- 49:51More defensemen. They're Yeah, exactly.
- 49:54I mean, we don't know with the Infinity.
- 49:57Byron wanted to get traded because he's like he has huge
- 50:01potential as a as a defenseman. He's stuck being the the third
- 50:04defenseman on this team. Yeah, imagine going from like
- 50:06being stuck behind my car and you're like, well, I'm never
- 50:08getting power, play 1. And then you go and you stuck
- 50:10behind dulling and power and you're like, yeah, now I'm also
- 50:12in Buffalo. I hate chicken wings.
- 50:22A poor guy. Yeah, alright, let's let's move
- 50:25on to the the top 2. All right #2.
- 50:29And #2 we've got Luke and Jack's brother when he was of the
- 50:35Vancouver Canucks last year. 1.12 points per game .43 power
- 50:40play points, 2.8 shots. He's just obviously talk to
- 50:45everyone who's listening already knows who number one is gonna be
- 50:48always in conversation one and two, he's elite for points.
- 50:51He actually shoots a ton, which I didn't give him credit for
- 50:54over the years. You know, I was always like, oh,
- 50:55he's that type of guy who gets a ton of points, but it won't get
- 50:57you any back cats. But no, I was wrong. 2.8 shots
- 51:00is super respectable as defenseman and and yeah he could
- 51:03benefit from a Peterson bounce back, but he doesn't need it to
- 51:06succeed. I think last year we saw how
- 51:09high the floor is for Quinn Hughes because Vancouver was a
- 51:12dumpster fire last year and he was still super fantasy
- 51:14relevant. Like the things that this guy
- 51:16can do on the ice, it's wild. Like he is physically very
- 51:20capable but. He moves on the unbelievable.
- 51:24None of you guys were picking up what I'm laying.
- 51:26There's the Dustin Wolf of Defensemen.
- 51:30And yeah, but he's also getting drafted accordingly, right?
- 51:33Like he's a fringe round one guy in your 12 team leagues and
- 51:38standard Yahoo draft. So he's 80P is 13 right now.
- 51:41And you know, honestly, it's not shocking if he can put us over
- 51:45point per game, three shots per game and power play quarterback.
- 51:49I think, I think he's insane. You go Jack Hughes into Quinn
- 51:53Hughes, come up with some fun team names, you know?
- 51:57Joaquin News. Use it or lose it or something
- 52:01like that, I don't know. Probably a lot of people out
- 52:04there that have the trio, and there are.
- 52:06Huge line is it anyways? I'm assuming you didn't come up
- 52:12come up with these off stop. I'm literally just thinking
- 52:14about. My head.
- 52:14Are you serious? Yeah, there's so impressive.
- 52:17So what did you say? You gotta be kidding me.
- 52:20Yeah, I I honestly, I I don't know.
- 52:24I mean, this, this, this guy has always been such a amazing
- 52:29player. And two years ago, 92 points.
- 52:32But obviously the Canucks were a much better team.
- 52:35You wanna talk about talismanic like?
- 52:37He's just one of them. OK, let me ask you guys a
- 52:41question here. And this ties into #1 So let's
- 52:45go. Let's go to that one.
- 52:46And then I'm gonna ask you a question that I think is
- 52:48interesting about Quinn Hughes. All right #1.
- 52:51At #1 surprising absolutely nobody, we've got kale macar in
- 52:56integral part of any salad and and the last year you would have
- 53:031.15 points, .44 power play points, 3.1 shots and 1.6
- 53:08blocks. And my question was looking at
- 53:11those stats versus the queen Hugh stats.
- 53:13Why is Makar everyone agrees top let's say like 8 pick whereas
- 53:18Quinn Hughes is like a second rounder.
- 53:21What makes them so different? Like they were point O3 points
- 53:24apart, point O1 power play points apart and .3 shots apart.
- 53:28I think. Yeah, sorry, I was going to say
- 53:31before I answer. I just can't believe that after
- 53:33all of the copyright issues, the first time we get sued is gonna
- 53:36be by big romaine lettuce. Don't speak into existence.
- 53:46What do you mean you need kale in every salad?
- 53:48Yeah. Makes episodes, Could be me and
- 53:51JK Josh is gonna be missing. If I'm missing, it was big
- 53:56Romaine. They came for me.
- 53:59I thought you were gonna thought you were going to be say that
- 54:02you're upset that I didn't say my note for for my car that I
- 54:05had written in the dog, which is he's the best in the world.
- 54:09That's what she said. Oh God, I am anyway.
- 54:17He's on the mend right now. After that, after that comment,
- 54:19I think he's more more induced. Because he hasn't been enough
- 54:24kale the. Antibodies are awake right now.
- 54:27OK, back to my question. Why is Mccart so much more
- 54:31highly regarded in terms of draft capital than Hughes when
- 54:34their stats seem so similar? I would like to answer your
- 54:36question. You in front.
- 54:41Maybe I do. I do.
- 54:43I want some man meat for all your office fans anyways, OK?
- 54:47No. And record.
- 54:52They can stay on the recording. That's why true.
- 54:55Anyways, the thing when Macar that makes him so much, you
- 54:59know, the why he's cemented as the best defenseman in fantasy
- 55:02is because we see him first of all, do it every single season.
- 55:05And if you watch him on the ice, I think he passes the eye test,
- 55:08whereas he can do things on his own.
- 55:10Like we've seen him go ice to ice score wonder.
- 55:13Goals. Look at Hughes.
- 55:14We just said that he had no support pretty much on this
- 55:17Vancouver team. But the thing that I like up my
- 55:20car more than Hughes is that, first of all, you know that
- 55:23McKinnon is never gonna have a season like Patterson had last
- 55:25year. You know, his surroundings are
- 55:28safer. We know the power play is
- 55:31undeniable. Last year they had a down year
- 55:33and he was still at .44 points per game in terms of power play
- 55:36production. I think there's more, you know,
- 55:39quote UN quote risks with Hughes that could go wrong for him to
- 55:41hit this threshold. I think things need to go a lot
- 55:44more things need to go right for Hughes to hit it than Macar.
- 55:46McCain have a down season and still be a point per game
- 55:49whereas Hughes could have a down season and he won't be a point
- 55:51per game like. But to Hughes credit, we saw
- 55:54Vancouver be complete dog water last season and he still did
- 55:58what he did right. So what could where is the
- 56:01ceiling here? Vancouver is, you know, better
- 56:03than they were last year. That's another question, but
- 56:06I'm, I'm not taking any risk with that.
- 56:09Makar is the clear number one guy and he he will be for the
- 56:12foreseeable future in my opinion.
- 56:14Yeah, I also think that for like Jared Bednar is kind of John
- 56:18Cooper esque in the way that he brings out the best in his
- 56:21players fantasy hockey wise, you know, the anti rod, if you will.
- 56:27They're just able to like coach star players and get the most
- 56:31out of those star players. So I mean, is it still Rick
- 56:36talking? Is he the Ted Coach of the
- 56:38Canucks? No, he got canned.
- 56:40All. There you go.
- 56:41I mean, Justin, that's another thing like if you if you look at
- 56:47it, Adam Foot as their head coach, interesting.
- 56:51I mean, he was a defensive and a pretty good one at that, so that
- 56:53I can actually maybe boost Hughes's value, but there's
- 56:56something to. Be.
- 56:59There's something to be said. I was trying to come up with a
- 57:03good one and you just blurt that out and like, alright, well
- 57:07resident. Soccer fan over here.
- 57:10Yeah, that's the best Case No, it's just what I like about
- 57:20Makar over here is and like why I see he's he's safe first of
- 57:24all, I don't want to take a defenseman in my top 10 picks at
- 57:26all we've. Top ten overall.
- 57:30Yeah, yeah. Sorry.
- 57:31Like if I have. Like.
- 57:32One of the top ten, like I wouldn't want it could really
- 57:35kind of fun if you're at the yeah I I feel like.
- 57:38We've, I mean, these guys are these guys are producing at
- 57:40elite forward levels like 1.12 points per game or one point.
- 57:44People overhype that. Like I see people stay like
- 57:46people talking online about it and like you have to take my car
- 57:48at 5 because he does what forwards to a defenseman level.
- 57:51And I'm like, no, you're not taking a car over like a passed
- 57:53over Matthews over capris off, you know, like don't overhype it
- 57:57because of that. But there is value there for
- 57:59sure. Like I definitely take my car
- 58:00like 8, you know, and like that. Yeah, and that's, that's not
- 58:03crazy at all. Over Kaprizov.
- 58:05No, that's I mean, I have I guess McCain at 9.
- 58:08We've got we don't have to go through a whole top, but I don't
- 58:11think it's crazy taking in your top ten.
- 58:12I think he's like at the end of the top 10.
- 58:14But no, I get what you're saying.
- 58:16I do think people are overhype. It.
- 58:18And I think, OK, I'll explain, I'll explain the issue with
- 58:24this. OK.
- 58:24And I I just feel like it's a it's an important thing.
- 58:27These these rankings are great. They they make a lot of sense.
- 58:30But personally, one, I've never seen anyone pick a defenseman
- 58:34super high in our bangers cats with face offs league and win.
- 58:39And two, there the drawback of having what A forward does in a
- 58:46defenseman is that none of these guys like Mccart does not hit.
- 58:51His blocks are not elite. So that becomes a little bit of
- 58:56a problem because if you have capris, I'm not getting blocked,
- 58:58who cares? But if you have one of your
- 59:00designated defenseman slot not doing what defenseman are
- 59:03supposed to do, that becomes a little bit of an issue.
- 59:05Which is why. The 30 point guys not diving
- 59:08into. Thankfully I wanted the average
- 59:11three hits a game as. Well.
- 59:13Yeah, OK. Look, listen like like that's
- 59:15definitely fair if also 130 points is.
- 59:18No, I'm talking about price of. OK, yeah, see, that's it though.
- 59:23So obviously points are more developed, like valuable out of
- 59:26the defenseman position, but there is something to be said.
- 59:28So back to your kind of Hughes versus McCarthy thing.
- 59:32I just think that because I trust Bednar to be such a good
- 59:35coach for them, I don't know what foot is gonna do for the
- 59:39Canucks this year. And like, there's something to
- 59:42be said about reuniting the Hughes brothers.
- 59:44They've they've talked about that before, the fact that
- 59:47nobody even floats the idea at all in any way, shape or form
- 59:51about moving the car. And that's been a conversation
- 59:53with, I mean, either from New Jersey to the Canucks or to New
- 59:58Jersey from the Canucks. I don't know.
- 59:59That's basically. Though.
- 1:00:01Yeah. It happens.
- 1:00:02I feel like just makes use way better.
- 1:00:05Yes, I mean, I guess it kind of be fun.
- 1:00:07Poor Luke, though, at that. Point yeah, I've got another
- 1:00:10McCarthy's question then. So I obviously I agree with you
- 1:00:13guys. Mccart, I would take higher than
- 1:00:14Hughes. Let's quote no question.
- 1:00:16I was just surprised looking at the stats at how close they
- 1:00:17were, but I don't disagree with that.
- 1:00:19But since their stats are so similar, do you prefer going
- 1:00:22like Macar into like a Mariner or are you going like a capris
- 1:00:25off into Hughes? You know, which one are you
- 1:00:27happier with? I'm going capris off Hughes
- 1:00:30personally. Yeah, I'm also going capris off
- 1:00:32Hughes. Yeah, me.
- 1:00:33Too. And it's like saying janky of
- 1:00:35like, you know, it's literally just like, you know, yeah, it's
- 1:00:37kind of like the same spot in the draft, right?
- 1:00:40You can end up with either of those.
- 1:00:41You can take the defenseman first and then the forward
- 1:00:43second or the forward first, defenseman second.
- 1:00:45I think the teardrop between, you know, the forwards is just a
- 1:00:48lot higher than the teardrop between these two guys.
- 1:00:50So exactly. That's why I would kind of if I
- 1:00:52know I can get Hughes at second, I'd rather take that than my car
- 1:00:55in the 1st. Yeah, nothing wrong with
- 1:00:57Mariner, but Capri is a bit of a different level.
- 1:00:59You know, yeah, exactly so. Just cost of thing.
- 1:01:02Yeah, it cost. I think I'd rather.
- 1:01:04I'd rather. I'd rather use like just simply
- 1:01:08right? And I was surprised by that.
- 1:01:09I came to that realization while we were working on this top ten
- 1:01:12list, you know, and looking at the stats, because my mind, I'm
- 1:01:14like, oh, it's so much different.
- 1:01:15But it's actually, it's interesting to think about cuz
- 1:01:17everyone's all over my car at in all the draft boards, everyone
- 1:01:21talking about everything in my part of the McCormick car, you
- 1:01:23know, but at cost, you know, maybe he uses more valuable.
- 1:01:26Yeah. And we just gave some really
- 1:01:28helpful advice of team names that you can make with.
- 1:01:31Both of their names. Yeah.
- 1:01:33So I mean, there's no advantage there even.
- 1:01:35Yeah. There's like that, Vine, get off
- 1:01:38my car. Yeah, alright, that was.
- 1:01:45Great. This was a really good one.
