- 0:00From my perspective, what I need to provide investors with this
- 0:04optionality because we all believe prices should be higher
- 0:09but the big question is when will that happen And and the
- 0:13investors sometimes get frustrated and tired with you
- 0:16know when will this car come, when will this come.
- 0:20And if you're going to invest in a mining company, you want to
- 0:23make sure that that mining company can perform throughout
- 0:27the precious metals price cycle and you can be a safe knowing
- 0:33that your investment is, is is profitable and it's a business
- 0:39that's viable in any price in the at any price in the cycle.
- 0:47Today, we're going to get a unique perspective on the gold
- 0:50and silver market. We're joined by Jorge Gunoza.
- 0:54He's the CEO of Fortuna Silver Mines.
- 0:58There are 1 billion market cap, global intermediate gold and
- 1:02silver producer Jorge's built the company up over the last 10
- 1:07years, so he has a thing or two to say.
- 1:10And think about the gold and silver price.
- 1:13His family's been in the mining industry for generations.
- 1:16Jorge, welcome to Ron's basement.
- 1:20Thank you, Ron. And just a minor correction
- 1:22there, it's been for two next journey, it's been 18 years now.
- 1:26Oh, 18 years? Well, I've I've only, I've only
- 1:29been following for 10. So my my apologies seems like
- 1:33I've imagined sometimes. That seems like only yesterday,
- 1:37right? Yes, Yes, yes.
- 1:39Tell me about it. Yeah.
- 1:41Well, it's impressive what you've done, building the
- 1:43company from, I know, Scratch with the help of some other
- 1:46investors, up to a point now where you have 5 operating minds
- 1:51that practically span the globe. And so I I would think that over
- 1:56the last 18 years you've developed some observations on
- 2:01the precious metals markets. Would you, you know, tell us
- 2:03what you think now when you look at the silver price and gold
- 2:06price? You know, I think as we were
- 2:13talking before, before we jumped into the interview, a precious
- 2:18metals investors are every so often put to the test, right.
- 2:24I think you know, I share the, the view that you know, we
- 2:31should be seeing significantly higher prices.
- 2:36Why? I mean I'm not a, you know,
- 2:40macroeconomic analyst nor nor anything like that.
- 2:43But listen, you know a decade ago, 12 years ago, we were
- 2:49selling or or gold and silver at prices that were very similar to
- 2:56what we're seeing today. That's 12 years ago, right?
- 3:01We were selling prices or or selling price for gold was
- 3:04averaging what, 1900 dollars $19150.
- 3:09Back in 2011, silver was hovering $30.
- 3:16Today silver is closer to 24 and and and gold you know in the mid
- 3:22to low 1900s, right. So you know I am of the view
- 3:29that if if we we we still think of a gold and silver close to
- 3:36record highs on nominal terms, yes.
- 3:39But if we are just for inflation, the prices of the
- 3:46precious metals are significantly lagging, right.
- 3:51Therefore in our industry, in their mining industry what we
- 3:55seen is really margin destruction over the last
- 4:02decade, right. So you know with all that I see
- 4:06out there with the the difficult situation the Fed change faces
- 4:13and you know I I bullish on on on higher prices, when will
- 4:24those materialize that is the the billion dollar question or
- 4:28$10 billion question billion dollars the Fed has made is not
- 4:35much these days, right, right. Come on.
- 4:40We, we come on Jorge, we thought you were going to give us the
- 4:42answer you know right. But you know I I I try to focus
- 4:48more on the things I can manage from you know my cost, the type
- 4:53of assets we get involved with and and things like that.
- 4:57Of course we have a view on on metals, we have to budget every
- 5:01year and we have to make assumptions on metal prices.
- 5:06But when we plan for the business we try to be as
- 5:09conservative as we can on metal prices.
- 5:12Now we might have personal views on the metal and I think that's
- 5:20what we're talking about here. I share the view that prices
- 5:27have fundamentals to be much higher.
- 5:31Why haven't they materialized? We can discuss about that.
- 5:37Yeah, yeah. You know, I want to ask you
- 5:39another question that I think you can offer a unique
- 5:42perspective to our viewers on as well.
- 5:45Your company now operates on 3 continents, is that correct?
- 5:49North America, South America, Africa.
- 5:52Do you bring mine here in Africa and South America?
- 5:55North America? Considering Mexico?
- 5:57Yes. When you're do you see a
- 6:02different appreciation and perspective on precious metals?
- 6:09Outside of the United States, I think in the United States were
- 6:13somewhat discouraged into investing in precious metals.
- 6:17It's not a a regular subject matter with most investment
- 6:23advisors but when you're other places in the world do you see a
- 6:26different level of appreciation for for the precious metals?
- 6:31Yes. And and and I mean I don't have
- 6:34to get the to to imaginative to to see where that appetite is.
- 6:43If we look at the public records for central bank purchases, we
- 6:50see that the central banks have been acquiring gold at record
- 6:56base this past month, right. So absolutely.
- 7:03And even if you go to Europe, right, I was attending a
- 7:08European precious metals focused conference in in Munich in in a
- 7:16few months ago and the amount of interest and an appetite from
- 7:22the Europeans, the Germans mainly was very surprising to
- 7:30me. Right now they have a war right
- 7:34next to to their their their back door right.
- 7:40So you know I think gold in in is is serving its purpose for
- 7:47that crowd right. And the central banks again, the
- 7:51central bank buying has been notably high and close to not
- 7:58close record highs in terms of bank purchases over the last
- 8:03months. And I think and you mentioned
- 8:05this earlier geopolitically in the world right now we're
- 8:10experiencing change like at least in my lifetime we've I've
- 8:15not seen. I I want to get one last
- 8:18comment, general comment on gold and silver, your commentary on
- 8:21this when I look at the bricks and we're hearing about the
- 8:24potential for a gold back currency.
- 8:27If you just take the ick out of bricks, the eye and the sea,
- 8:31India and China combined they have 2.8 billion people which is
- 8:37like 8 times the population of the United States.
- 8:41They also have growing economies.
- 8:44They also have growing middle class and they have, I know in
- 8:47both of those countries, like a huge appetite for silver and
- 8:51gold. It just feels like the move in
- 8:57the world is more towards appreciation or a higher
- 9:01appreciation of silver and gold. Yes.
- 9:05And again, we have to look at the signs on the wall, right?
- 9:12And I think the signs are there. But you know what, this is not
- 9:18new. I've been in this industry long
- 9:20enough. I seen a couple of cycles at
- 9:22least and you know including the one that I believe is brewing
- 9:28right now and I remember in 2002 thousand and one we were, you
- 9:35know in the business mining and gold was trading at $300.00.
- 9:41Perhaps that was misery. That was miserable.
- 9:46And there was complete capitulation with respect to the
- 9:50industry, the sector I mainstream media lambasted gold
- 9:59and and the concept of this archaic relic that gold was, and
- 10:04it was better to to store water than than, you know, store gold
- 10:11to preserve value, right. And I remember all of this and
- 10:16sure enough, there came a moment when gold played its role and
- 10:21and we saw a tremendous bull run from the early 2000s up to the
- 10:26peak in 2011, right. And and it was a tremendous bull
- 10:34market for the sector in those days, right.
- 10:38And today the floor from where we are having these discussions
- 10:44is completely different, right. Again, we're trading at nominal
- 10:47highs close to nominal highs. So I believe that you know there
- 10:56is potential for significant appreciation and we're far from
- 11:03what I seen as as a as a really bad market if you will.
- 11:10But from from my perspective what I need to provide investors
- 11:15with this optionality because we all believe prices should be
- 11:20higher. But the big question is when
- 11:22will that happen and and investors sometimes get
- 11:26frustrated and tired with you know when will this car come,
- 11:30when will this come. And if you're going to invest in
- 11:34a mining company, you want to make sure that that mining
- 11:36company can perform throughout the precious metals price cycle.
- 11:41And you can be safe knowing that your investment is, is is
- 11:48profitable and it's a business that's viable in any price in
- 11:53the at any price in the cycle. So when the theory does
- 11:57materialize and we see this, this run in the metal, the
- 12:03miners serve their purpose and provide that big leverage to the
- 12:09investors the and that's why you invest in that in, in in mining
- 12:14equities, right, looking for that leverage against if if you
- 12:18know gold price moves 10/15/20 percent today minors I think are
- 12:26going to just go through the roof, right.
- 12:29Yeah, Yeah, you you've accomplished a lot in your 18
- 12:34years. I have a whole page of notes
- 12:37here regarding you know past and now just even current updates
- 12:43with the company. You just put out your production
- 12:45results for Q2 93,400 gold equivalent Oz.
- 12:52It feels like you have positioned the company.
- 12:56To benefit right from this potential future price
- 12:59appreciation that we might get in gold.
- 13:02But even in the current environment, it feels like to me
- 13:07that you've built a a machine or an enterprise that that even in
- 13:12today's prices can can do well, it's generating cash flow.
- 13:16I mean are there any highlights that you want to want to touch
- 13:18on with what's going on currently?
- 13:20Yes. And and the main one is that
- 13:22over the last two years we've been working hard at seeding for
- 13:29tunas growth for the next decade or two and that is or Segala
- 13:36project or Segala mine in the second quarter of this year or
- 13:42or new mine only contributed 4000 ounces of gold to that
- 13:48figure that you just shared with the audience 93,000 no.
- 13:53So almost you know less than 5% of of the oz, 4% of the oz were
- 14:02contributed by our new mine which in the third quarter
- 14:06should have a more more stable production and we should benefit
- 14:11from more weeks or first gold. And this mine was poured on May
- 14:1524th, so we had only what five weeks of ramp up and and a bit
- 14:20of production in the quarter. So the third quarter should be
- 14:24much stronger and the 4th one even even better, right.
- 14:28And and so we've been investing over the last two years and it's
- 14:33only now that we're starting to harvest and Segela is a
- 14:39magnificent project with you know ticks all the boxes, low
- 14:43cost, meaningful production, long life of reserves, exciting
- 14:48exploration upside. So it's it's our flagship asset
- 14:52and it's only coming to production now.
- 14:55The average only sustaining cost, these are figures that the
- 14:58World Goal Council produced just recently in the first quarter.
- 15:03That's the latest figures we have from the World Goal Council
- 15:07for Q 1/20/23. The average the the median gold
- 15:12production. The average gold production came
- 15:15in at almost $1400 per oz. No.
- 15:20Of all global gold mine supply. Half of global mine supply you
- 15:27know came at around 1500 fourteen $100.
- 15:35Segela will produce gold that you know.
- 15:37We expect that one stable at around $1000.
- 15:43You know I want to circle back to something you said earlier.
- 15:46When you were talking about the growth of the company and you
- 15:49said the last two years, you've been seating the company for the
- 15:54next 10 years of growth. And I and I had a little
- 15:57internal chuckle like, oh, you mean you know, of course you
- 15:59watched the quarter by quarter numbers, but that's the feeling
- 16:03I get about Fortuna and I am a investor myself and the company
- 16:07is that you are making longterm decisions.
- 16:11And I feel like the acquisitions, the Rocks Gold
- 16:14acquisition which brought you the Seguela mine and the Burkina
- 16:18Faso operations that and even this most recent announcement of
- 16:23the acquisition of Chesser Resources and Senegal that that
- 16:28that you put a high focus on quality that these are longterm,
- 16:37you have a longterm vision for the company.
- 16:39To continue to grow over the next 18 years, is that, is that
- 16:44a safe assumption? You know, yes, all of the minds
- 16:51that over the last 18 years we have wired and brought into
- 16:55production are still in production today.
- 16:59Interesting. Yeah.
- 17:01All of the minds that we acquired and brought into
- 17:03production are still in production today.
- 17:06I think in an ever depleting business, that's something,
- 17:10right? We make mistakes.
- 17:14Yes, we do. You know, every time we make a
- 17:16judgment on an asset or whatever, we make mistakes,
- 17:20sometimes we do. We just try to make our
- 17:22mistakes, keep our mistakes small, right?
- 17:27But you know all of our minds are in production and all of
- 17:32them still offer exploration opportunities potential.
- 17:38And again I think the future looks bright for us and and we
- 17:44see a lot of optionality in our portfolio, right, particularly
- 17:49in West Africa these days. I'm quite excited.
- 17:53You know by no means we giving up on Latin America, no, by no
- 17:57means. We're still very committed
- 17:59exploring looking for opportunities.
- 18:02But we open the field, we open the field for us going to West
- 18:08Africa and I I see a lot of organic brownfields type
- 18:15opportunities in the portfolio and and a lot of Greenfield
- 18:19opportunities as well. Interesting.
- 18:22Interesting. You always.
- 18:24Talk about the people 5500 employees at Fortuna.
- 18:29Is that part of your of your secret?
- 18:32Because I want a point. I want to give you a big
- 18:33compliment. I think I've.
- 18:35I've done this couple times in the past, but it bears
- 18:37repeating. You know, a lot of silver mining
- 18:40companies that I follow very closely over the last 5-10 years
- 18:45have attempted to move into gold mining, to diversify into gold
- 18:49mining and almost all of them have been met with.
- 18:52Severe challenges, I'll put it that way.
- 18:54And I don't want to name any names of these other companies
- 18:57you have delivered time after time, even when at one point I
- 19:04know when the Rocks Gold acquisition was announced, there
- 19:06was some skepticism in the market.
- 19:11But now we're seeing Seguela come to fruition.
- 19:15I guess I want to ask you, you know is there is is there a
- 19:18secret or is there what what would you attribute you and and
- 19:22and with the help of the 5500 employees you have there,
- 19:25Fortuna to your ability to consistently deliver.
- 19:31Yeah they they work for six 5500 a lot of those over half of that
- 19:37is, is contractors you know that work at our minds which we
- 19:43should view as our partners right.
- 19:45We, we, but we manage a workforce 5500 and yeah, you
- 19:51know, absolutely people is everything.
- 19:54This is a complex risky business and you know.
- 20:02In a in a company like Fortuna today, I think or or or first
- 20:07job is to to develop the strategy.
- 20:11No, that's my responsibility. Develop the strategy.
- 20:16And with that then make sure that we have the right people in
- 20:22the right place. Right.
- 20:24And I am what's my secret? What's the company secret?
- 20:31It's good people, no good committed people.
- 20:35You know we our business is complex is finding funding,
- 20:45developing, permitting operating minds in developing regions.
- 20:56So the geopolitical complexity of those regions is, is, is
- 21:02high. So we not only need good mining
- 21:05engineers, good explorers, but also people who can deliver in
- 21:10those complex geopolitical environments, right.
- 21:14And I think that's what I do. I focus a lot of my time on that
- 21:19on on who should we be working with and I'm fortunate to to be
- 21:26you know together working with a with a senior executive team of
- 21:32seasoned professionals committed who share the long term view of
- 21:39the company and and contribute to the strategy every day and
- 21:44the short term delivery as well, right.
- 21:46So yeah, people is is keen. Also today we have in our team
- 21:52Peruvians, Canadians, US Nationals, Australians,
- 22:01Ivorians, working Navies, Argentinians, Mexicans like
- 22:09diverse. The United Nations, right?
- 22:12Yeah, it's. But, you know it's so rich.
- 22:15It's a diverse team. We've been working hard to
- 22:19expand the the the presence of women in the in the workforce.
- 22:26So today your board has almost 40% women in the composition of
- 22:31the board or management team in in the management team across
- 22:36the company we have about 19 close to 20% female
- 22:40participation and that also you know and and and it's not just
- 22:45females female from different jurisdictions coming here
- 22:49through different walks of life bringing all of that experience.
- 22:53So. So it's very rich very diverse
- 22:57and and that that's something I'm particularly proud of right
- 23:01and and and we try to keep it keep everybody humble and and
- 23:07and try to keep politics to them very minimum.
- 23:15So yeah, all of that's working well and you know.
- 23:19Keep your heads down and like you said, have a longterm
- 23:22strategy. You always strike me as A and
- 23:26this is our fifth or sixth conversation as a very humble
- 23:29person. I also want to mention, you
- 23:32know, I interact with other people at the company, Carlos
- 23:34Bacas, Adam Sherkus, Sylvia, who I think works with you and
- 23:39everybody I deal with is just strikes me as being very high
- 23:45quality, very responsive. Very high quality people and you
- 23:50know that's that's an intangible factor, but to me that means a
- 23:56lot that that these these people you can just sense care about
- 24:00the company and and do a great job.
- 24:03So you know on behalf of my viewers and everybody who joined
- 24:07us today, Jorge, you know you shared a great deal of
- 24:10information with us, your view of the overall precious metals
- 24:14market, but I think gave us a good inside glimpse of.
- 24:18Of where Fortuna has been and where they're heading.
- 24:21Is there anything else that I that I forgot to ask you about
- 24:24that you want to mention? I know the second quarter
- 24:26earnings are coming up. Any any anything I forgot to to
- 24:30bring up? No, no, I think we touched on
- 24:34the main things and and I think we all look with a lot of
- 24:38anticipation to to what's coming in the near future.
- 24:44You know on Fortuna because what we have in the pipeline and you
- 24:49know with what's happening with the macroeconomics and and and
- 24:55the perspective for the underlying commodities that we
- 24:58mind silver and gold right. And I think we are all looking
- 25:03with a lot of anticipation to what is unfolding there.
- 25:09That's outstanding. We'll look forward to hearing
- 25:11from you more in the future. I almost forgot if I could ask
- 25:14you one small favor. I have a gentleman who helps me
- 25:17a lot with the channel. He's very smart, he's very
- 25:20analytical and he really likes you.
- 25:23And he must have asked me 10 times to make sure that I tell
- 25:25you that coin shop Chris says hello to Carlos and he he gives
- 25:29you a big thumbs up. I'll let him know.
- 25:32Thank you for that. Yes, yes.
- 25:35Well, Carlo, I'm sorry, Jorge, I apologize.
- 25:38Thanks for your time, Okay, and we'll look forward to talking to
- 25:42you again in the future.
