From my perspective, what I need to provide investors with this
• 0:04
optionality because we all believe prices should be higher
• 0:09
but the big question is when will that happen And and the
• 0:13
investors sometimes get frustrated and tired with you
• 0:16
know when will this car come, when will this come.
• 0:20
And if you're going to invest in a mining company, you want to
• 0:23
make sure that that mining company can perform throughout
• 0:27
the precious metals price cycle and you can be a safe knowing
• 0:33
that your investment is, is is profitable and it's a business
• 0:39
that's viable in any price in the at any price in the cycle.
• 0:47
Today, we're going to get a unique perspective on the gold
• 0:50
and silver market. We're joined by Jorge Gunoza.
• 0:54
He's the CEO of Fortuna Silver Mines.
• 0:58
There are 1 billion market cap, global intermediate gold and
• 1:02
silver producer Jorge's built the company up over the last 10
• 1:07
years, so he has a thing or two to say.
• 1:10
And think about the gold and silver price.
• 1:13
His family's been in the mining industry for generations.
• 1:16
  Jorge, welcome to Ron's basement.
• 1:20
Thank you, Ron. And just a minor correction
• 1:22
there, it's been for two next journey, it's been 18 years now.
• 1:26
  Oh, 18 years? Well, I've I've only, I've only
• 1:29
been following for 10. So my my apologies seems like
• 1:33
I've imagined sometimes. That seems like only yesterday,
• 1:37
  right? Yes, Yes, yes.
• 1:39
  Tell me about it. Yeah.
• 1:41
Well, it's impressive what you've done, building the
• 1:43
company from, I know, Scratch with the help of some other
• 1:46
investors, up to a point now where you have 5 operating minds
• 1:51
that practically span the globe. And so I I would think that over
• 1:56
the last 18 years you've developed some observations on
• 2:01
the precious metals markets. Would you, you know, tell us
• 2:03
what you think now when you look at the silver price and gold
• 2:06
price? You know, I think as we were
• 2:13
talking before, before we jumped into the interview, a precious
• 2:18
metals investors are every so often put to the test, right.
• 2:24
I think you know, I share the, the view that you know, we
• 2:31
should be seeing significantly higher prices.
• 2:36
Why? I mean I'm not a, you know,
• 2:40
macroeconomic analyst nor nor anything like that.
• 2:43
But listen, you know a decade ago, 12 years ago, we were
• 2:49
selling or or gold and silver at prices that were very similar to
• 2:56
what we're seeing today. That's 12 years ago, right?
• 3:01
We were selling prices or or selling price for gold was
• 3:04
  averaging what, 1900 dollars $19150.
• 3:09
Back in 2011, silver was hovering $30.
• 3:16
Today silver is closer to 24 and and and gold you know in the mid
• 3:22
to low 1900s, right. So you know I am of the view
• 3:29
that if if we we we still think of a gold and silver close to
• 3:36
record highs on nominal terms, yes.
• 3:39
But if we are just for inflation, the prices of the
• 3:46
precious metals are significantly lagging, right.
• 3:51
Therefore in our industry, in their mining industry what we
• 3:55
seen is really margin destruction over the last
• 4:02
decade, right. So you know with all that I see
• 4:06
out there with the the difficult situation the Fed change faces
• 4:13
and you know I I bullish on on on higher prices, when will
• 4:24
those materialize that is the the billion dollar question or
• 4:28
$10 billion question billion dollars the Fed has made is not
• 4:35
much these days, right, right. Come on.
• 4:40
We, we come on Jorge, we thought you were going to give us the
• 4:42
answer you know right. But you know I I I try to focus
• 4:48
more on the things I can manage from you know my cost, the type
• 4:53
of assets we get involved with and and things like that.
• 4:57
Of course we have a view on on metals, we have to budget every
• 5:01
year and we have to make assumptions on metal prices.
• 5:06
But when we plan for the business we try to be as
• 5:09
conservative as we can on metal prices.
• 5:12
Now we might have personal views on the metal and I think that's
• 5:20
what we're talking about here. I share the view that prices
• 5:27
have fundamentals to be much higher.
• 5:31
Why haven't they materialized? We can discuss about that.
• 5:37
Yeah, yeah. You know, I want to ask you
• 5:39
another question that I think you can offer a unique
• 5:42
perspective to our viewers on as well.
• 5:45
Your company now operates on 3 continents, is that correct?
• 5:49
  North America, South America, Africa.
• 5:52
Do you bring mine here in Africa and South America?
• 5:55
  North America? Considering Mexico?
• 5:57
Yes. When you're do you see a
• 6:02
different appreciation and perspective on precious metals?
• 6:09
Outside of the United States, I think in the United States were
• 6:13
somewhat discouraged into investing in precious metals.
• 6:17
It's not a a regular subject matter with most investment
• 6:23
advisors but when you're other places in the world do you see a
• 6:26
different level of appreciation for for the precious metals?
• 6:31
Yes. And and and I mean I don't have
• 6:34
to get the to to imaginative to to see where that appetite is.
• 6:43
If we look at the public records for central bank purchases, we
• 6:50
see that the central banks have been acquiring gold at record
• 6:56
base this past month, right. So absolutely.
• 7:03
And even if you go to Europe, right, I was attending a
• 7:08
European precious metals focused conference in in Munich in in a
• 7:16
few months ago and the amount of interest and an appetite from
• 7:22
the Europeans, the Germans mainly was very surprising to
• 7:30
me. Right now they have a war right
• 7:34
next to to their their their back door right.
• 7:40
So you know I think gold in in is is serving its purpose for
• 7:47
that crowd right. And the central banks again, the
• 7:51
central bank buying has been notably high and close to not
• 7:58
close record highs in terms of bank purchases over the last
• 8:03
months. And I think and you mentioned
• 8:05
this earlier geopolitically in the world right now we're
• 8:10
experiencing change like at least in my lifetime we've I've
• 8:15
not seen. I I want to get one last
• 8:18
comment, general comment on gold and silver, your commentary on
• 8:21
this when I look at the bricks and we're hearing about the
• 8:24
potential for a gold back currency.
• 8:27
If you just take the ick out of bricks, the eye and the sea,
• 8:31
India and China combined they have 2.8 billion people which is
• 8:37
like 8 times the population of the United States.
• 8:41
  They also have growing economies.
• 8:44
They also have growing middle class and they have, I know in
• 8:47
both of those countries, like a huge appetite for silver and
• 8:51
gold. It just feels like the move in
• 8:57
the world is more towards appreciation or a higher
• 9:01
appreciation of silver and gold. Yes.
• 9:05
And again, we have to look at the signs on the wall, right?
• 9:12
And I think the signs are there. But you know what, this is not
• 9:18
new. I've been in this industry long
• 9:20
enough. I seen a couple of cycles at
• 9:22
least and you know including the one that I believe is brewing
• 9:28
right now and I remember in 2002 thousand and one we were, you
• 9:35
know in the business mining and gold was trading at $300.00.
• 9:41
Perhaps that was misery. That was miserable.
• 9:46
And there was complete capitulation with respect to the
• 9:50
industry, the sector I mainstream media lambasted gold
• 9:59
and and the concept of this archaic relic that gold was, and
• 10:04
it was better to to store water than than, you know, store gold
• 10:11
to preserve value, right. And I remember all of this and
• 10:16
sure enough, there came a moment when gold played its role and
• 10:21
and we saw a tremendous bull run from the early 2000s up to the
• 10:26
peak in 2011, right. And and it was a tremendous bull
• 10:34
market for the sector in those days, right.
• 10:38
And today the floor from where we are having these discussions
• 10:44
is completely different, right. Again, we're trading at nominal
• 10:47
highs close to nominal highs. So I believe that you know there
• 10:56
is potential for significant appreciation and we're far from
• 11:03
what I seen as as a as a really bad market if you will.
• 11:10
But from from my perspective what I need to provide investors
• 11:15
with this optionality because we all believe prices should be
• 11:20
higher. But the big question is when
• 11:22
will that happen and and investors sometimes get
• 11:26
frustrated and tired with you know when will this car come,
• 11:30
when will this come. And if you're going to invest in
• 11:34
a mining company, you want to make sure that that mining
• 11:36
company can perform throughout the precious metals price cycle.
• 11:41
And you can be safe knowing that your investment is, is is
• 11:48
profitable and it's a business that's viable in any price in
• 11:53
the at any price in the cycle. So when the theory does
• 11:57
materialize and we see this, this run in the metal, the
• 12:03
miners serve their purpose and provide that big leverage to the
• 12:09
investors the and that's why you invest in that in, in in mining
• 12:14
equities, right, looking for that leverage against if if you
• 12:18
know gold price moves 10/15/20 percent today minors I think are
• 12:26
going to just go through the roof, right.
• 12:29
Yeah, Yeah, you you've accomplished a lot in your 18
• 12:34
years. I have a whole page of notes
• 12:37
here regarding you know past and now just even current updates
• 12:43
with the company. You just put out your production
• 12:45
results for Q2 93,400 gold equivalent Oz.
• 12:52
It feels like you have positioned the company.
• 12:56
To benefit right from this potential future price
• 12:59
appreciation that we might get in gold.
• 13:02
But even in the current environment, it feels like to me
• 13:07
that you've built a a machine or an enterprise that that even in
• 13:12
today's prices can can do well, it's generating cash flow.
• 13:16
I mean are there any highlights that you want to want to touch
• 13:18
on with what's going on currently?
• 13:20
Yes. And and the main one is that
• 13:22
over the last two years we've been working hard at seeding for
• 13:29
tunas growth for the next decade or two and that is or Segala
• 13:36
project or Segala mine in the second quarter of this year or
• 13:42
or new mine only contributed 4000 ounces of gold to that
• 13:48
figure that you just shared with the audience 93,000 no.
• 13:53
So almost you know less than 5% of of the oz, 4% of the oz were
• 14:02
contributed by our new mine which in the third quarter
• 14:06
should have a more more stable production and we should benefit
• 14:11
from more weeks or first gold. And this mine was poured on May
• 14:15
24th, so we had only what five weeks of ramp up and and a bit
• 14:20
of production in the quarter. So the third quarter should be
• 14:24
much stronger and the 4th one even even better, right.
• 14:28
And and so we've been investing over the last two years and it's
• 14:33
only now that we're starting to harvest and Segela is a
• 14:39
magnificent project with you know ticks all the boxes, low
• 14:43
cost, meaningful production, long life of reserves, exciting
• 14:48
exploration upside. So it's it's our flagship asset
• 14:52
and it's only coming to production now.
• 14:55
The average only sustaining cost, these are figures that the
• 14:58
World Goal Council produced just recently in the first quarter.
• 15:03
That's the latest figures we have from the World Goal Council
• 15:07
for Q 1/20/23. The average the the median gold
• 15:12
production. The average gold production came
• 15:15
in at almost $1400 per oz. No.
• 15:20
Of all global gold mine supply. Half of global mine supply you
• 15:27
know came at around 1500 fourteen $100.
• 15:35
Segela will produce gold that you know.
• 15:37
We expect that one stable at around $1000.
• 15:43
You know I want to circle back to something you said earlier.
• 15:46
When you were talking about the growth of the company and you
• 15:49
said the last two years, you've been seating the company for the
• 15:54
next 10 years of growth. And I and I had a little
• 15:57
internal chuckle like, oh, you mean you know, of course you
• 15:59
watched the quarter by quarter numbers, but that's the feeling
• 16:03
I get about Fortuna and I am a investor myself and the company
• 16:07
is that you are making longterm decisions.
• 16:11
And I feel like the acquisitions, the Rocks Gold
• 16:14
acquisition which brought you the Seguela mine and the Burkina
• 16:18
Faso operations that and even this most recent announcement of
• 16:23
the acquisition of Chesser Resources and Senegal that that
• 16:28
that you put a high focus on quality that these are longterm,
• 16:37
you have a longterm vision for the company.
• 16:39
To continue to grow over the next 18 years, is that, is that
• 16:44
a safe assumption? You know, yes, all of the minds
• 16:51
that over the last 18 years we have wired and brought into
• 16:55
production are still in production today.
• 16:59
  Interesting. Yeah.
• 17:01
All of the minds that we acquired and brought into
• 17:03
production are still in production today.
• 17:06
I think in an ever depleting business, that's something,
• 17:10
  right? We make mistakes.
• 17:14
Yes, we do. You know, every time we make a
• 17:16
judgment on an asset or whatever, we make mistakes,
• 17:20
sometimes we do. We just try to make our
• 17:22
mistakes, keep our mistakes small, right?
• 17:27
But you know all of our minds are in production and all of
• 17:32
them still offer exploration opportunities potential.
• 17:38
And again I think the future looks bright for us and and we
• 17:44
see a lot of optionality in our portfolio, right, particularly
• 17:49
in West Africa these days. I'm quite excited.
• 17:53
You know by no means we giving up on Latin America, no, by no
• 17:57
  means. We're still very committed
• 17:59
  exploring looking for opportunities.
• 18:02
But we open the field, we open the field for us going to West
• 18:08
Africa and I I see a lot of organic brownfields type
• 18:15
opportunities in the portfolio and and a lot of Greenfield
• 18:19
  opportunities as well. Interesting.
• 18:22
  Interesting. You always.
• 18:24
Talk about the people 5500 employees at Fortuna.
• 18:29
Is that part of your of your secret?
• 18:32
Because I want a point. I want to give you a big
• 18:33
  compliment. I think I've.
• 18:35
I've done this couple times in the past, but it bears
• 18:37
repeating. You know, a lot of silver mining
• 18:40
companies that I follow very closely over the last 5-10 years
• 18:45
have attempted to move into gold mining, to diversify into gold
• 18:49
mining and almost all of them have been met with.
• 18:52
Severe challenges, I'll put it that way.
• 18:54
And I don't want to name any names of these other companies
• 18:57
you have delivered time after time, even when at one point I
• 19:04
know when the Rocks Gold acquisition was announced, there
• 19:06
was some skepticism in the market.
• 19:11
But now we're seeing Seguela come to fruition.
• 19:15
I guess I want to ask you, you know is there is is there a
• 19:18
secret or is there what what would you attribute you and and
• 19:22
and with the help of the 5500 employees you have there,
• 19:25
Fortuna to your ability to consistently deliver.
• 19:31
Yeah they they work for six 5500 a lot of those over half of that
• 19:37
is, is contractors you know that work at our minds which we
• 19:43
should view as our partners right.
• 19:45
We, we, but we manage a workforce 5500 and yeah, you
• 19:51
  know, absolutely people is everything.
• 19:54
This is a complex risky business and you know.
• 20:02
In a in a company like Fortuna today, I think or or or first
• 20:07
job is to to develop the strategy.
• 20:11
No, that's my responsibility. Develop the strategy.
• 20:16
And with that then make sure that we have the right people in
• 20:22
  the right place. Right.
• 20:24
And I am what's my secret? What's the company secret?
• 20:31
It's good people, no good committed people.
• 20:35
You know we our business is complex is finding funding,
• 20:45
developing, permitting operating minds in developing regions.
• 20:56
So the geopolitical complexity of those regions is, is, is
• 21:02
high. So we not only need good mining
• 21:05
engineers, good explorers, but also people who can deliver in
• 21:10
  those complex geopolitical environments, right.
• 21:14
And I think that's what I do. I focus a lot of my time on that
• 21:19
on on who should we be working with and I'm fortunate to to be
• 21:26
you know together working with a with a senior executive team of
• 21:32
seasoned professionals committed who share the long term view of
• 21:39
the company and and contribute to the strategy every day and
• 21:44
the short term delivery as well, right.
• 21:46
So yeah, people is is keen. Also today we have in our team
• 21:52
  Peruvians, Canadians, US Nationals, Australians,
• 22:01
Ivorians, working Navies, Argentinians, Mexicans like
• 22:09
  diverse. The United Nations, right?
• 22:12
Yeah, it's. But, you know it's so rich.
• 22:15
It's a diverse team. We've been working hard to
• 22:19
expand the the the presence of women in the in the workforce.
• 22:26
So today your board has almost 40% women in the composition of
• 22:31
the board or management team in in the management team across
• 22:36
the company we have about 19 close to 20% female
• 22:40
participation and that also you know and and and it's not just
• 22:45
females female from different jurisdictions coming here
• 22:49
through different walks of life bringing all of that experience.
• 22:53
So. So it's very rich very diverse
• 22:57
and and that that's something I'm particularly proud of right
• 23:01
and and and we try to keep it keep everybody humble and and
• 23:07
and try to keep politics to them very minimum.
• 23:15
So yeah, all of that's working well and you know.
• 23:19
Keep your heads down and like you said, have a longterm
• 23:22
strategy. You always strike me as A and
• 23:26
this is our fifth or sixth conversation as a very humble
• 23:29
person. I also want to mention, you
• 23:32
know, I interact with other people at the company, Carlos
• 23:34
Bacas, Adam Sherkus, Sylvia, who I think works with you and
• 23:39
everybody I deal with is just strikes me as being very high
• 23:45
quality, very responsive. Very high quality people and you
• 23:50
know that's that's an intangible factor, but to me that means a
• 23:56
lot that that these these people you can just sense care about
• 24:00
the company and and do a great job.
• 24:03
So you know on behalf of my viewers and everybody who joined
• 24:07
us today, Jorge, you know you shared a great deal of
• 24:10
information with us, your view of the overall precious metals
• 24:14
market, but I think gave us a good inside glimpse of.
• 24:18
Of where Fortuna has been and where they're heading.
• 24:21
Is there anything else that I that I forgot to ask you about
• 24:24
that you want to mention? I know the second quarter
• 24:26
earnings are coming up. Any any anything I forgot to to
• 24:30
bring up? No, no, I think we touched on
• 24:34
the main things and and I think we all look with a lot of
• 24:38
anticipation to to what's coming in the near future.
• 24:44
You know on Fortuna because what we have in the pipeline and you
• 24:49
know with what's happening with the macroeconomics and and and
• 24:55
the perspective for the underlying commodities that we
• 24:58
mind silver and gold right. And I think we are all looking
• 25:03
with a lot of anticipation to what is unfolding there.
• 25:09
That's outstanding. We'll look forward to hearing
• 25:11
from you more in the future. I almost forgot if I could ask
• 25:14
you one small favor. I have a gentleman who helps me
• 25:17
a lot with the channel. He's very smart, he's very
• 25:20
analytical and he really likes you.
• 25:23
And he must have asked me 10 times to make sure that I tell
• 25:25
you that coin shop Chris says hello to Carlos and he he gives
• 25:29
you a big thumbs up. I'll let him know.
• 25:32
Thank you for that. Yes, yes.
• 25:35
Well, Carlo, I'm sorry, Jorge, I apologize.
• 25:38
Thanks for your time, Okay, and we'll look forward to talking to
• 25:42
  you again in the future.
