- 0:00Podcasthero.com Welcome to The Daily Quote, a podcast designed
- 0:06to kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:09I'm your host, Andrew Mcgibbon for December 17th.
- 0:13Today is National Maple Syrup Day, celebrating nature's
- 0:17sweetest gift and the patience required to create it.
- 0:21Real Maple syrup is liquid gold distilled from the SAP of sugar
- 0:25Maple trees. The process is ancient, dating
- 0:29back thousands of years to indigenous people who discovered
- 0:33how to collect and boil down SAP into syrup long before European
- 0:38settlers arrive. Making Maple syrup requires
- 0:41patience and timing. Trees must be at least 30 to 40
- 0:46years old before they can be tapped.
- 0:48SAP flows only during a narrow window in late winter and early
- 0:52spring, when nights freeze but days warm above 4.4°C or 40°F.
- 1:04And here's the remarkable part It takes 40 gallons, or 151
- 1:09liters of SAP to make just one gallon of serum, 40 to one.
- 1:17That ratio alone teaches us something about transformation.
- 1:21Something watery and unremarkable becomes
- 1:23concentrated sweetness through time, heat, and human effort.
- 1:29And that brings us to today's quote from botanist and author
- 1:32Robin Wall Kimmerer. In her book Braiding Sweetgrass,
- 1:37She wrote beautifully about this relationship.
- 1:41She once said the responsibility does not lie with the maples
- 1:46alone. The other half belongs to us.
- 1:51We participate in its transformation.
- 1:53It is our work and our gratitude that distills the sweetness.
- 2:01Kimmerer's insight is profound. The Maple tree provides the SAP,
- 2:06but that's not Maple syrup. The tree gives us raw material,
- 2:11potential sweetness. We have to do our part.
- 2:16We tap the trees, we collect the SAP, we tend the fire, we watch
- 2:21the boil. We know when to stop.
- 2:25The transformation from watery SAP to amber syrup doesn't
- 2:28happen without human participation, patience, and
- 2:31care. But notice the second part of
- 2:34Kimura's quote. Gratitude.
- 2:37She's saying that gratitude is essential to the process.
- 2:40We're not just extracting a resource.
- 2:42We're entering into a relationship that Maple gives.
- 2:46But we receive with thanks. We work to transform the gift.
- 2:51That cycle of giving, receiving, and transforming with gratitude.
- 2:55That's what distills the sweetness.
- 2:58This applies far beyond Maple syrup.
- 3:01Every good thing in our lives is part Maple, part us.
- 3:06Talent is raw SAP until we develop it through practice.
- 3:10Relationships are potential until we invest time and care.
- 3:14Opportunities are just SAP until we do something with them.
- 3:18The sweetness comes from participation, work, and
- 3:21gratitude. So yes, today is National Maple
- 3:25Syrup Day. But I don't know about you, but
- 3:27in my house, it's Maple syrup day every day, at least for me,
- 3:32because I like to have Maple syrup with my yogurt after
- 3:35dinner or with my ice cream or on my pancakes and waffles.
- 3:40There's a surprising amount of food that I actually like to
- 3:43have, some real pure Maple syrup.
- 3:48You can call me weird if you want.
- 3:49So today, think about what raw SAP you've been given.
- 3:55What potential sits in your life, waiting for your
- 3:58participation to transform it. Maybe it's a talent you haven't
- 4:02developed, a relationship you haven't nurtured, an opportunity
- 4:06you haven't fully seized, an idea you have not acted on.
- 4:11The tree has given you the SAP. Now you do your part.
- 4:17Tend the fire. Watch the transformation.
- 4:20Participate with gratitude. Because Kimmerer was right.
- 4:25The sweetness doesn't distill itself.
- 4:28It needs your work, your attention, your gratitude.
- 4:33The maples have done their part. The rest is up to you.
- 4:37That's going to do it. For today.
- 4:38I'm Andrew McGivern. Signing off for now but I'll be
- 4:42back tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 4:48with another daily quote.
