- 0:00Speaker 1: Now let's return to one of our top stories, which
- 0:03Speaker 1: is the aftermath of the attack on the heat And
- 0:06Speaker 1: Park Synagogue in Manchester. We can cross live to my
- 0:11Speaker 1: colleague Anita McPhee who's there for us. And Anita, we've
- 0:15Speaker 1: just had an update from the police. What can you tell.
- 0:18Speaker 2: Us, Yes, just in the last few moments the news
- 0:27Speaker 2: from Greater Manchester Police who say that one of the victims, So,
- 0:32Speaker 2: one of the men killed yesterday here at the Heaton
- 0:36Speaker 2: Park Synagogue, which is just not very far along the
- 0:40Speaker 2: road behind me, was hit by police gunfire as they
- 0:47Speaker 2: attempted to bring the attacker under control. So one of
- 0:51Speaker 2: the victims who was killed was hit by police gunfire.
- 0:56Speaker 2: My colleague Danny Savage is with me now and can
- 0:58Speaker 2: tell us more about what Greater Manchester Police have been saying.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Danny, Yeah, Anisa that this has come in a statement
- 1:04Speaker 3: from Greater Manchester Police in the last few minutes, and
- 1:08Speaker 3: just to give you a bit more detail of that,
- 1:11Speaker 3: they're saying that a Home Office pathologist has advised that
- 1:14Speaker 3: he has provisionally determined that one of the deceased victims
- 1:18Speaker 3: would appear to have suffered a wound consistent with a
- 1:20Speaker 3: gunshot injury. It's current belief that the suspect she had
- 1:24Speaker 3: al Shammi, was not in possession of a firearm, and
- 1:27Speaker 3: the only shots fired were by the GMP police officers
- 1:31Speaker 3: who were working to prevent the offender from entering the
- 1:34Speaker 3: synagogue and causing further harm to the Jewish community. It
- 1:37Speaker 3: follows therefore, that, subject to further forensic examination, this injury
- 1:41Speaker 3: may sadly have been sustained as a tragic and unforeseen
- 1:44Speaker 3: consequence of the urgently required action taken by officers to
- 1:48Speaker 3: bring the vicious attack to an end. We've also been
- 1:51Speaker 3: advised by medical professionals that one of the three victims
- 1:55Speaker 3: currently being treated in hospital also suffered a gunshot wound,
- 1:59Speaker 3: which is mercifully not life threatening. It's believed that both
- 2:02Speaker 3: victims were close together behind the synagogue door as worshipers
- 2:07Speaker 3: acted bravely to prevent the attacker from gaining entry. It
- 2:11Speaker 3: goes on to say, our thoughts and prayers remain with
- 2:13Speaker 3: all the families, So there was some This was alluded
- 2:16Speaker 3: to a little bit last night, and in that statement
- 2:19Speaker 3: initially from Greater Manchester Police last night saying that one
- 2:22Speaker 3: of the people who was injured appears to have suffered
- 2:25Speaker 3: an injury sustained perhaps from the response by the police
- 2:29Speaker 3: officers at the time. What is obviously very tragic and
- 2:34Speaker 3: new what's coming out from that this morning is that
- 2:36Speaker 3: actually one of the people who died in the attack yesterday,
- 2:39Speaker 3: in the incident more broadly, was a victim with a
- 2:42Speaker 3: gunshot wound as well from perhaps a ricochet or something
- 2:46Speaker 3: when we don't know, but you know shots.
- 2:49Speaker 2: That's going to be the subject of sense investigation.
- 2:51Speaker 3: But we know from my witnesses yesterday there were a
- 2:53Speaker 3: couple of bursts of gunfire at the time, or first
- 2:56Speaker 3: burst of gunfire brought the man to the grounds. He
- 2:59Speaker 3: then carding to wine witnesses try to get up again,
- 3:02Speaker 3: and there was a second volley of shots then which
- 3:06Speaker 3: stopped him permanently. So that we know there were quite
- 3:10Speaker 3: a few shots fired at the time by at least
- 3:12Speaker 3: two armed police officers that responded very quickly. We know
- 3:15Speaker 3: it was all over within seven minutes yesterday, very fast
- 3:18Speaker 3: response from police and it seems that this was a
- 3:21Speaker 3: as it says in the police stavement from Greater Manchester Police.
- 3:24Speaker 3: A tragic consequence of that fast response was somebody being
- 3:28Speaker 3: hit as a result of those shots been fired. Who
- 3:31Speaker 3: wasn't the perpetrator of the attack.
- 3:33Speaker 2: Or obviously very shocking news on top of the shock
- 3:37Speaker 2: of this attack.
- 3:38Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely, I mean, you know, people are coming to
- 3:41Speaker 3: terms of the fact that a it happens, but then
- 3:43Speaker 3: to find out that they were killed ineffectively, not the
- 3:48Speaker 3: crossfire necessarily wherever those shots were fired, bullets could have
- 3:52Speaker 3: bounced off in any direction. We know, I'm not a
- 3:54Speaker 3: ballistics expert. Some people, but those experts will be looking
- 3:57Speaker 3: at that to see how exactly that all came about
- 4:00Speaker 3: what happened. But it was a very fast moving situation.
- 4:03Speaker 3: It was all happening very quickly yesterday.
- 4:05Speaker 2: What else can you tell us about the status of
- 4:07Speaker 2: the police investigation at this point Downy? I believe searchers
- 4:11Speaker 2: have been continuing out of property close to here.
- 4:13Speaker 3: Yeah, searchers have been continuing at a property close to here.
- 4:18Speaker 3: We've also had searches at an address in press Witch,
- 4:22Speaker 3: which is a few miles from here as well. So
- 4:24Speaker 3: two properties were investigated by police during the day yesterday
- 4:31Speaker 3: and the evening as well. Three arrests were made. Two
- 4:34Speaker 3: men in their thirties a woman in her sixties were
- 4:38Speaker 3: arrested and detained under on suspicion of terrorism charges. So
- 4:42Speaker 3: they're being held in custody at the moment, So those
- 4:44Speaker 3: investigations are ongoing. We've of course had the two victims
- 4:47Speaker 3: nameless morning and so we know who they are. Now
- 4:51Speaker 3: we're waiting to see if any of their relatives or
- 4:53Speaker 3: people who know them will comment about that. And also
- 4:57Speaker 3: we've had an.
- 4:58Speaker 2: Adrian Dorby three and Melvin Province who was sixty six.
- 5:03Speaker 3: Yeah, so those two victims, the two victims of what
- 5:06Speaker 3: happens has been named, and we've had the Prime Minister
- 5:08Speaker 3: here this morning as well. Yeah.
- 5:09Speaker 2: Actually, Danny, let me interrupt you because we have some pictures.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I'll give you a chance to catch up on the
- 5:14Speaker 2: latest lines coming into us from Greater Manchester Police. But
- 5:19Speaker 2: we have received some pictures in the last short while
- 5:22Speaker 2: off Sir Kiir Starmer and his wife, Lady Victoria, who
- 5:26Speaker 2: herself is Jewish, visiting the Hayton Park Synagogue, images of
- 5:32Speaker 2: them shaking hands with police officers there who continue to
- 5:36Speaker 2: guard the scene just a short way away from where
- 5:39Speaker 2: we are standing. And we heard those initial comments from
- 5:42Speaker 2: Sir Kiir Starmer yesterday who flew back from Denmark early
- 5:48Speaker 2: from a security conference there, a security summit there to
- 5:52Speaker 2: chair a meeting of COBRA, the Security Cabinet, and he
- 5:56Speaker 2: said that the UK would put its arms around the
- 5:59Speaker 2: Jewish community. And then we heard more from the Home Secretary,
- 6:04Speaker 2: shabanahmer Mood, speaking to the BBC earlier today, and she
- 6:08Speaker 2: said that she did not want the Jewish community in
- 6:12Speaker 2: the UK to feel that it somehow had to lead
- 6:15Speaker 2: a smaller Jewish life as a result of what had
- 6:19Speaker 2: happened here yesterday, and that she would be having conversations
- 6:23Speaker 2: with leaders from the community to talk about security and
- 6:28Speaker 2: what more needs to be done. But talking to Jewish
- 6:32Speaker 2: leaders here today and just reflecting on what some of
- 6:35Speaker 2: them have said to me, one from the Jewish Leadership
- 6:38Speaker 2: Council told me that security at synagogues and at Jewish
- 6:42Speaker 2: schools and community centers is what he called the normalization
- 6:47Speaker 2: of anti Semitism in the UK. He said it shouldn't
- 6:51Speaker 2: be that way. For example, that children going to Jewish
- 6:54Speaker 2: schools have to walk past security guards every day, which
- 6:58Speaker 2: doesn't happen at others rules here does it So yet
- 7:02Speaker 2: he recognizes that certainly for the foreseeable future, there is
- 7:07Speaker 2: that need to increase security, so those conversations are going on.
- 7:13Speaker 2: He said, the resilience of the Jewish community is being
- 7:17Speaker 2: tested at this time.
