- 0:00You're listening to Beyond the Sermon podcast, the First
- 0:03Methodist Church in Collingswood, NJ On our podcast,
- 0:06the goal is not just to share the sermons we've preached, but
- 0:09to go beyond the sermon and talk about what we're learning and
- 0:12what God is doing in US and in our community.
- 0:15Good morning. Good morning, trying to read
- 0:19your writing. Yeah, that's, that's the moral
- 0:22of it. Yeah.
- 0:23We're having some technical difficulties this morning, which
- 0:27we're shifting up a little bit the way that we normally record
- 0:31the podcast, but I'm stubborn enough that I'm going to make it
- 0:35happen one way or another. I'll agree, stubborn.
- 0:38Here we are, here we are. So how did it feel to creature
- 0:42the longest sermon ever? I don't, I don't think it was
- 0:45the long if you take out the bonus prayer, I don't think it
- 0:48was, but it it definitely didn't feel as long as I think my
- 0:53longest 1 was like I think I think I hit 32 with one of them.
- 0:58In just in the preaching. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:01So this is definitely 2nd place. But I it felt to me at least
- 1:07flow wise from preaching, I don't know, from receiving rock
- 1:11wise, it felt like 2023 minutes. Yeah, it didn't.
- 1:15It didn't feel long. Yeah, it's just fine because the
- 1:18whole service ended up going like an hour and 20 an hour and
- 1:2425 minutes by the time we. Yeah.
- 1:27Wrapped up and dismissed him. But no, this one definitely felt
- 1:32more natural more. I don't know, I was just so
- 1:37comfortable with the material that God had provided me that I
- 1:43knew all the pieces very well enough.
- 1:45So then once I was getting them in order, it was, yeah, it just
- 1:49flowed in my head and and made it easier that I didn't need to
- 1:52be as stuck to paper as I normally.
- 1:55You mentioned in your sermon that there are a variety of
- 2:03reasons why people may not want to hear from God.
- 2:09Tell me more about that. What are what are some of the
- 2:11reasons people may not want to hear about hear from God?
- 2:15Yeah, and I don't think it's an explicitly don't want to hear
- 2:19from God like in their own in their own mind, fear that they'd
- 2:22have to change something they don't want to change.
- 2:25I like, I was talking to someone I think yesterday about the
- 2:30American Dream and it's like you post up shop in one house and
- 2:35like make that your mini Kingdom and you work out of that home
- 2:38base. And we were talking about the
- 2:40church's legal stuff and potentially having to move
- 2:44depending on how things go. And me and Rebecca being very
- 2:47comfortable with that and trusting God help provide what
- 2:50we need in in each and every season.
- 2:52And yeah, it was like, well, for most people, they don't consider
- 2:56God leading them to move housing or job or anything.
- 3:01It's like, I worked very hard to set up this and then I continue
- 3:05in this. And so I think even if it's not
- 3:09in all areas, there are some big areas in life that were like, I
- 3:13don't even want to ask God if he wants to make a change or leave
- 3:16in a different direction because of all that it would entail and
- 3:19include. And I'm getting comfortable and
- 3:22whatever it might be. And so I think that can be a
- 3:25really big play in it. And also like similar, like I
- 3:30said when I was wrestling with things like I want to know the
- 3:33fruit of what he's calling me to do so I can balance the
- 3:37discomfort or the awkwardness or embarrassment that I would
- 3:43potentially experience due to my faithfulness.
- 3:47The. The ROI, right, the return on
- 3:48the investment. Yeah, yeah.
- 3:51Well, here's an example that's not biblical at all is like,
- 3:56what if hypothetically God had called someone around the time
- 4:01of Jesus's arrest to do their best rooster crow impression and
- 4:06just off the rooftop and I'm like, God, this is dumb, silly
- 4:09thing. Why am I doing this in the
- 4:11middle of nowhere? And, you know, maybe Peter
- 4:15didn't see the rooster crow, but he heard the third one and it
- 4:18was just God leading someone to make a fool of himself.
- 4:23And yet it was to leave that strong impression on Peter.
- 4:28I don't believe that's what happened, making that very
- 4:30clear. But it's the why would God want
- 4:33me to crow like a rooster? And we don't know what he's
- 4:35using it for. And I don't think God's asking
- 4:38us to make animal noises all the time.
- 4:40But that's a very silly, embarrassing thing that we could
- 4:45none of none of us want to do. Yeah, I think sometimes we don't
- 4:50actually want to hear God speak. We just want the answer.
- 4:55Like we we want to know what the next step is, but we don't
- 4:59actually want the level of relationship that's necessary
- 5:04for it to actually be God. And we want him to speak into
- 5:09what we want to hear about, not what he wants to say to us.
- 5:12But hey, God, I'm going to pick the topic.
- 5:15I'm going to give you a yes. No, You get back to me on that.
- 5:19Not a Lord. What do you want to say to your
- 5:21servant? Yeah.
- 5:23Kind of like elementary school kids pass notes.
- 5:26Do you like me? Check.
- 5:27Yes. No.
- 5:28It's like, yeah, that that's what we want God to be.
- 5:30We don't actually want the relationship where that's going
- 5:34to require something of us to live in that kind of
- 5:37relationship to maintain that kind of relationship.
- 5:41There's an obligation then if we do hear from God, that we're
- 5:46then responsible for responding to it, right?
- 5:49And so lots of reasons why we might not want to hear from God,
- 5:54but doesn't change the fact that he is still speaking, right?
- 5:59And he's speaking sometimes even when we're not listening.
- 6:06But I wondered, you know, as we're going through this series,
- 6:10any recent examples you could give of hearing from about just
- 6:15like normal life, kind of that's really what we're getting at
- 6:20when we talk in this whole series about hearing the voice
- 6:24of God, right? It's not about getting to a
- 6:27point where you figured out the formula of how you actually hear
- 6:30the audible voice of God whispering in your ear or
- 6:33yelling in your ear, whatever, right?
- 6:35It's about how do we know that God is communicating to us so
- 6:41that we can respond to what he's doing?
- 6:43Yeah. So I don't think we have to have
- 6:45a distinction there, so. So well.
- 6:47From there go. That that's not that's not
- 6:50sermon prepping because through this sermon it was like, I think
- 6:53I talked to you about this like a month ago, like I felt like I
- 6:56had pieces to a sermon that goes into the series, but I didn't
- 7:01know exactly where God was leading and where I thought it
- 7:03was originally going to go. Vietnamese landmines we'll talk
- 7:06about another time is not where we ended up, but God provided it
- 7:11passion a very clear direction for the sermon and so was in
- 7:16communication with you during that and then even all the way
- 7:20down to the last minute. The morning of the sermon is
- 7:23just waking up trying to be in his presence before preaching
- 7:27about being in his presence and praying and in my notes.
- 7:32I have a whole section about contacting my cousin, like my
- 7:37printed out notes that were at the pulpit, contacting my cousin
- 7:40in Arizona, not my hippie cousin in the mountains of California.
- 7:45To use the whole like you have a cell phone, we can pray, you
- 7:49could write letters if you're old fashioned Bible, the word
- 7:51God has provided us. And but I was going to have a
- 7:54separate story that I didn't know where to fit in.
- 7:57So I just kind of gave up on it about how to like, just 'cause I
- 8:00don't get responses doesn't mean that I believe the other person
- 8:04no longer can speak or no longer wants to communicate with me
- 8:08even. And so that morning I was
- 8:10praying. I was like, oh, my cousin
- 8:12Tanner, There you go. There's both examples kind of
- 8:15all compiled into one person and one kind of connection point.
- 8:18And so yeah, that wasn't in my notes, but but God provided that
- 8:23and LED me into that. And even while I was the night
- 8:26before working with Tim on slides, and when those slides
- 8:29come up, as I'm going through it, there's little pieces that
- 8:32just God was either a part that needed to be cut off or a part
- 8:40that I needed to rearrange. But it was like for me, it
- 8:44clicked. It wasn't like that.
- 8:45Oh, I'm trying to make it fit. Just like as I'm going, it's
- 8:48like, oh, this needs to go in there.
- 8:51And it just doesn't feel like me coming up with that and more
- 8:56like daily life. There's been a couple times
- 8:59lately where I'm driving and I just feel like God's put a
- 9:02person on my heart that I need to communicate with.
- 9:06And so I call them from the car. Sometimes the answer, sometimes
- 9:10they don't. And sometimes it leads to
- 9:11further discussions. And then we see the fruit of
- 9:15that. But just being open to instead
- 9:18of just getting distracted with whatever fun songs I'd like,
- 9:21it's like praying or doing worship music.
- 9:24And then once I especially when it's again, like I mentioned in
- 9:27the sermon, he pesters me with things that wouldn't naturally
- 9:30come to mind. So it's not like the Oh, I've
- 9:32been meaning to talk to them for a while.
- 9:34It's like random person out of the blue I haven't talked to in
- 9:36eight months. And it's like, OK, God, that's
- 9:39random. And the song doesn't make me
- 9:41think of them where I'm driving doesn't make me think of them or
- 9:44might be something here. And so, so when we're at
- 9:47Passion, I always try and equip our college kids that go with us
- 9:52with resources that they can use after our time together at
- 9:55Passion. And Passion has a lot of books
- 9:58and Bibles available that are usually written by the speakers.
- 10:01And usually it's like, I'll pray and see if there's one or two
- 10:05that stick out or whatever. And this time it was the very
- 10:07first day before we heard a single preacher, before we
- 10:10started worship. I was just flipping through them
- 10:13and feeling like I just need to get certain read, like he was
- 10:16already putting certain people in my heart with certain
- 10:18resources. And one of our kids is new to
- 10:21the faith, new to church only in the past year.
- 10:24And he I asked him, I was like, do you have a Bible?
- 10:29And he was like, no, I just been using the Bible app ESV.
- 10:32And I was like, that's great. Awesome.
- 10:34So I was like, they have ESV ones.
- 10:36Let me get him a good Bible and couple others.
- 10:39And so I ended up buying 10 resources and we had eight kids
- 10:43with us and I was like, whatever, these extra ones, I'll
- 10:46just have really good resources in my office that I can hand out
- 10:49at later times to whoever. And so praying over those, I
- 10:52literally come back to the seats with two two bag full of books
- 10:57before it even starts. As one does when they're at a
- 11:00conference. Yeah, which I'm not a I'm not a
- 11:02big even when we go to new room like I I maybe grab 3 or 4 and
- 11:06that's at the end after I've been encouraged and inspired by
- 11:09speakers and convince myself I'm going to read the books at some
- 11:12point. And so we get back to the Airbnb
- 11:16that night and I have three books for three people, one of
- 11:21them being the Bible and I have one more for a person, but felt
- 11:23like I wasn't supposed to give it to them yet.
- 11:25So I give the the first 3. There's the Bible book about
- 11:29being a godly man, another one about daily worship.
- 11:32And the last one is called Don't Look Back by Christine Kane.
- 11:36And it was, it was for a friend of someone that was originally
- 11:42going to go with us and ask if their friend could tag along and
- 11:45they're tied in with Delanco and stuff like that.
- 11:47And I was like, I trust this person.
- 11:49And so they were able to join us.
- 11:51And later that night, we were just up talking, the two of us,
- 11:56a couple others in in the room. But we were, you know, talking,
- 11:59getting to know each other and just felt like God was like,
- 12:02this is the time to share. And it kind of went well with
- 12:04her testimony. And at the end of the
- 12:08conference, the author ended up being her favorite speaker of
- 12:11the entire time. And I was like, OK, it's good
- 12:14confirmation. And then I'm left with six books
- 12:17now. And at one point I was back, we
- 12:20were eating about everyone else left to go save us spots.
- 12:25I was with two of our students, and one of them I knew had been
- 12:28dealing with anxiety. And three of the books are
- 12:31specifically about anxiety and worry.
- 12:35And for whatever reason, I just felt like God put it on my heart
- 12:39that this book about viewing God is the perfect father is what he
- 12:43wanted. We're like, my human instincts
- 12:45would be like one of the ones about anxiety and just trusted
- 12:50it and and they seem to receive it like they knew why God wanted
- 12:55that for them instead. And then another one, I was
- 12:58like, I feel like one of these three books could be really good
- 13:02for you. The ones about anxiety.
- 13:04And immediately their eyes locked on this one because it it
- 13:07connected with a musical artist that they enjoy and wasn't
- 13:11written by them, but just like the font and the word connected
- 13:14them with an artist. I was like, however, God wants
- 13:16to draw you to actually reading the book and, you know, spending
- 13:19some time with him. And so that one was down.
- 13:22And now I'm down to four and we get to one of our last family
- 13:27meetings and one of them was a devotional.
- 13:30I actually had that to the side. And I hold up these three books
- 13:36and I'm like, I'm sorry, God hasn't like provided 1
- 13:40specifically on my heart for either of you. 2 And in my mind,
- 13:43I didn't think either of them dealt with anxiety regularly.
- 13:47And so I held them up. I was like, if you want any of
- 13:49these, you're, you're more than welcome to it.
- 13:52And they looked at each other like in shock.
- 13:55And they're like, we were just talking about this.
- 13:57That one's mine and that one's mine.
- 13:59And they both took the specific books that that they wanted.
- 14:03And I was like, wow, God, God's going far before us on these
- 14:08matters. And so I was left with two.
- 14:10And I was like, OK, I got two more for my library and can
- 14:12equip our youth or young adults with at some point.
- 14:15And I'm on the plane. They're in my backpack, and I'm
- 14:19sitting next to this kid that was that from Passion.
- 14:23I could tell by his hoodie. And he's watching the series
- 14:26finale of Stranger Things. And I'm exhausted.
- 14:29Yes. I'm old.
- 14:30I'm getting old. Yeah.
- 14:31And so I was like, I'm just going to sleep.
- 14:33I don't want to talk about Passion.
- 14:34I don't want to talk about Stranger Things.
- 14:36I'm asleep, but it's a long flight from Dallas.
- 14:38And so I wake up and ask him about Stranger Things.
- 14:42We get talk and ask him about Passion, Start hearing about his
- 14:44testimony. And at the end we're we're
- 14:47landing. And I just felt like I was
- 14:49supposed to give him the devotional.
- 14:51And so I was like, hey, God's put it on my heart to to give
- 14:54you this devotional. Is that something that you think
- 14:56you'd be interested in actually read?
- 14:58And he was like, Are you sure? Like, yeah, I'll read it.
- 15:01I'll definitely read it. And I was like, yeah, done.
- 15:03Like he knew you wanted it and needed it.
- 15:06And so and I got home and and Kirsten's there and I'm like, I
- 15:11didn't get anything for Kirsten. I feel so bad, let me just play
- 15:16it off if you had. One more.
- 15:17Yeah, one more book. And so let me play it off.
- 15:21And so I was like, here, I got you this book from Passion and
- 15:24it's Louis Giglio's Don't let the enemy have a seat at your
- 15:28table. She's like, oh, thanks.
- 15:30And I was like, Yep, definitely, definitely was thinking to you
- 15:33on that, on that one. And then she goes, you know, I
- 15:36think Karen Alexander was talking to me about this book
- 15:40and like doing the devotional and I was thinking about getting
- 15:43like the main book because then it had like more of the material
- 15:46revolving around it. And I was like, OK, God, look at
- 15:50that. Just like wind it up
- 15:53back-to-back. And yeah, So that that was just
- 15:57incredible where every single one he had just lined up who the
- 16:03book was. Now, when will they read it?
- 16:05Will they read the books or will they just be impacted by how God
- 16:10used the individual gifting? I think that's where hearing God
- 16:15and trying to be faithful can be annoying from a human standpoint
- 16:22of like we assume, oh, God wanted me to give them this
- 16:26thing, now they're going to use it as I anticipate them to use
- 16:30it. And that's not always the case.
- 16:32Sometimes he wants to use it in a different way than we might
- 16:35anticipate, but it's the faithfulness and allowing him to
- 16:41use it how He wishes. And sometimes it's just about
- 16:45what he's doing in US, right? And to.
- 16:48Grow our confidence in being. Faithful will you be faithful to
- 16:51do? And for sure, buying a pile of
- 16:54books might not seem like any big deal.
- 16:56Yeah. So in your preparation, anything
- 17:03that you came across that you wanted to talk about or wanted
- 17:08to talk more about but didn't feel like it was the right
- 17:12sermon or the right place or. Yeah, that that that was a
- 17:16harder part in prep because you're way more series minded
- 17:21when you preach and prep and I'm just.
- 17:24Which is why I preach in series. I recognize there's no way I can
- 17:27get it all out in one. Sermon Yeah.
- 17:30And so I was trying to make sure that I stayed locked in on what
- 17:34God was leading me to and not trying to cover the whole
- 17:37picture of what it looks like to, yeah, hear and, and discern
- 17:42and, and follow through and that kind of stuff.
- 17:46And so there was multiple times where I just texted you.
- 17:48I was like, this is really good, but it's not for this sermon.
- 17:51So if you want to use it in the sermon series, go nuts.
- 17:53Yeah. And when you're talking about,
- 17:55you know, preaching from a passage that is pivotal not just
- 17:59in Israel's life but in Moses life specifically, like that
- 18:03opens up the whole of his life. And it's like.
- 18:06Yeah. Well, what and Moses being
- 18:08pivotal to the faith, right? Like as a whole is that there's
- 18:12so much, if not too much to possibly get into or connect in,
- 18:18which was again, really hard because like I could have had us
- 18:21read chapters 3 and 4 of Exodus as the scripture reading.
- 18:25But yeah, so one of the things that that stood out to me and I
- 18:28think is I ended up touching on it in the youth group because of
- 18:31weather and stuff that we want to move some things around.
- 18:35And I think in our day and age and in our specific culture in
- 18:39this time, people like to use Scripture to warrant how they
- 18:46want to see things done in the world or they'll argue, well,
- 18:51Jesus said this, so we have to go and do this if Jesus.
- 18:57Told the rich young ruler to go sell everything he had.
- 19:00Then we should all sell all of our belongings, whatever it may
- 19:03be. Or if he says help the least of
- 19:06these, then I'm going to choose who the least of these are and
- 19:09I'm going to choose what helping them looks like.
- 19:11And that's what Jesus wants. And I think what's so pivotal
- 19:16with this series is there's a million issues in the world.
- 19:20And I think a lot of times we also hear that, yeah, that's
- 19:23bad, but what about this? But what about this?
- 19:26And you just go down this rabbit hole of think of all these other
- 19:29horrible things. Why are you focused on this
- 19:31horrible thing? And we tried to like measure
- 19:34which is more horrible, which deserves more of our time or
- 19:37effort and all that kind of stuff.
- 19:39We're thinking in Moses of like God was upset that his people
- 19:46were enslaved and being treated the way that they were in
- 19:49suffering. Moses was upset that Pete, his
- 19:54people were enslaved and suffering.
- 19:57Moses in his human anger and reaction and how he decided to
- 20:02handle a specific situation involved killing one of the
- 20:07Egyptians that were beating one of the Hebrews, the Israelites.
- 20:11And it's like. OK, God also didn't like that
- 20:14they were hurting the Israelites.
- 20:16You killed 11 down out of how many?
- 20:20And the institution is still running and going and enslaving
- 20:24the people and they're still going to get beaten out, just by
- 20:26a different Egyptian. But one could argue and say,
- 20:29well, he did something towards the injustice that he saw.
- 20:35But when he even after that, he goes away for how many years,
- 20:39Scott? Yeah, 40 years. 40 years people
- 20:42could view be like you accomplished nothing for saving
- 20:46your people and solving the injustice of that you lazy
- 20:51shepherd man or whatever. Ran away hiding.
- 20:55You coward. And we would view that as
- 20:57unfruitful season versus a potential waiting time where his
- 21:04character could be worked on and prepare him for what God was
- 21:09going to call him next, which was the complete liberation of
- 21:13the Israelites in God's ways, in God's timing.
- 21:17And it was successful even though Moses was like, not me, I
- 21:22don't know how this is going to happen.
- 21:23Why would Pharaoh listen to me? I like, how is this going to
- 21:27work out? All of the questions he has,
- 21:30because he couldn't imagine how this was going to work out.
- 21:34And so for me, it was a we can try and do good sometimes even
- 21:39for God, and we're limited on the impact that we can have
- 21:44where if we listen to what God wants to use us for, he's able
- 21:48to use it for so much more. Yeah, it.
- 21:51It's the difference between doing things for God and doing
- 21:56things with God, as somebody wrote in a book.
- 22:02Scott's book is coming out. No, no, no.
- 22:06I yeah. And I think that's something
- 22:08that we in the church, outside of the church, looking into the
- 22:12church different. I mean, I don't know how
- 22:16contemporary examples, I don't know.
- 22:17Did you hear about the Minnesota church?
- 22:19Yeah, Yeah. So there are protesters coming
- 22:22into church during a service screaming about why aren't you
- 22:26doing this? If you care about what you say
- 22:29you care about from scripture, and we'll nitpick whatever
- 22:32scriptures we want, that we want you to act in the way we want
- 22:34you to act, then you shouldn't be worshipping God and focusing
- 22:38on what God wants of you. You need to be living out your
- 22:43faith the way we want you to live out your faith.
- 22:45And then don't do the other things your faith calls you to
- 22:48do. And I think that really comes
- 22:52down to this, how we're seeing our culture not only clash with
- 22:56the church, but also I think seeing our culture clash within
- 23:00the church as well, the big C church.
- 23:04And so that's where like I, I was talking with people about
- 23:06like, yeah, you can have, you know, why aren't you feeding?
- 23:12You see a homeless person on the ground and feeding the one.
- 23:16Yes. And within our congregation, God
- 23:19put it on their hearts to take over the food pantry in the
- 23:21community and step up and how many families that's regularly
- 23:25helped where they could have easily been like that seems too
- 23:29complicated. Now I'm going to keep which is
- 23:32still good to do in in addition, but saying right to have like
- 23:35some granola bars in our car. And when I go into Philly every
- 23:38three months, I can give one out at the guy that's on the other
- 23:41side of the Ben Franklin Bridge. And that's good enough because
- 23:44God, I don't feel like figuring out what starting a food pantry
- 23:47and working with others to do that multiple times a week.
- 23:51The the time that's required of that.
- 23:54It would be easier to keep granola bars in my car and we
- 23:57can do both. But I'm saying the one that God
- 24:00has LED them to has been far more fruitful than what they
- 24:04could have been like. Let me negotiate with you, God,
- 24:08on what could accomplish the same kind of thing.
- 24:11That's why I think in our ministry and in the future
- 24:17projection of this church, we are seeing more and more of God
- 24:21leading things that may seem small, but we're seeing a lot of
- 24:27fruit come from them as He is the one steering the ship in
- 24:32many more areas. People in the pews up, not just
- 24:38paint staff down, Yeah. It's a drastically different way
- 24:42to approach church then maybe the American church painting
- 24:47with broad strokes, you know, has operated in the past few
- 24:52decades where it's different to to go to church leadership and
- 24:57say, Hey, I think God's leading me towards this, Explore that
- 25:03together, pray about that together, confirm that and
- 25:06release someone to to start a new ministry, to do ministry,
- 25:10whatever it might be versus hey, pastor, I think our church needs
- 25:17to do this. And by our church, it always
- 25:21seems to mean someone. Else yeah.
- 25:23Within the church. I have the idea now someone else
- 25:26can make it happen. Yeah.
- 25:28So I think that is really, really key to what God's doing
- 25:34in our midst and, and the ways we're seeing him show up and
- 25:38seeing people begin to, to gain some confidence in responding to
- 25:42that voice because they're learning more and more how to
- 25:45recognize who who's speaking. And we're going to get into that
- 25:50a little bit more in a couple weeks when we talk about why God
- 25:53speaks to us. So it's not just, it's not just
- 25:57for the sake of new ministries, it's not just for the sake of
- 26:01what he's doing in us there. There's, there are several
- 26:04reasons I think God speaks to us.
- 26:06And so understanding is keeping all of them in mind is important
- 26:10as we figure out what it means to hear from God today.
- 26:15Yeah. Well, that's our conversation
- 26:16for today, but that doesn't mean the conversation is over.
- 26:20We'd love to hear your thoughts on these topics as well.
