- 0:28SPEAKER_00: Hello guys.
- 0:29SPEAKER_08: Welcome to the O'Brien and Doug podcast at O'Brien.
- 0:32SPEAKER_08: I'm Doug.
- 0:33SPEAKER_08: It is episode 193.
- 0:38SPEAKER_08: And ladies and gentlemen, we have a guest.
- 0:42SPEAKER_08: Oh no, wrong one.
- 0:44SPEAKER_08: There we go.
- 0:47SPEAKER_05: The first one was more like it.
- 0:49SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 0:50SPEAKER_04: We have a guest.
- 0:54SPEAKER_04: Nobody wants to be on our show.
- 0:56SPEAKER_08: We've been talking about getting a guest, and and um so our our friend Wildman is gonna come on and we'll we'll talk about how kind of we we know Wildman uh when he comes on.
- 1:07SPEAKER_08: We'll get him on here in a few minutes.
- 1:08SPEAKER_08: Um but the I will I will say I don't want to go into too much detail about this um because I also want to save some of it for when we talk to Wildman.
- 1:17SPEAKER_08: Um but we've been trying to get him on for a while.
- 1:22SPEAKER_08: Month month I want to say months, but but maybe a year.
- 1:26SPEAKER_08: It's been it's been a long, yeah, it's been over a year.
- 1:28SPEAKER_08: You know, I just cause because he's always like, oh yeah, I want to do that.
- 1:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh, I just am really busy and you know, yeah.
- 1:35SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 1:36SPEAKER_08: And every time I see him or talk to him, it's like, yeah, I I do have to I gotta get on that podcast.
- 1:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:41SPEAKER_08: And um we got some just sad news that uh mutual friend of all of ours um just passed away.
- 1:49SPEAKER_08: Uh I think it was yesterday.
- 1:51SPEAKER_08: At least I was found I found out about it yesterday.
- 1:53SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 1:54SPEAKER_08: I think it happened yesterday too.
- 1:55SPEAKER_08: Um so I I I actually called Wildman to inform him because um our friends our our friend who passed um lives downstate now and has for years.
- 2:13SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:14SPEAKER_08: And has a whole new different set of friends, and which is fine.
- 2:19SPEAKER_08: And and you know, so we kind of lost touch a little bit.
- 2:23SPEAKER_08: Um but one of those friends reached out to me because it was important that I knew, and um the other friend they divided in Concord, and they like one friend called a bunch of people, and then this friend called a like a phone tree.
- 2:36SPEAKER_05: Kind of yeah, yeah.
- 2:37SPEAKER_08: And so I I said, Well, I can I can inform some people around here that would want to know.
- 2:44SPEAKER_08: And and Wildman was one of them.
- 2:46SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 2:46SPEAKER_08: And so we talked on the phone, not very long because he was at work.
- 2:50SPEAKER_08: Uh didn't want to tell him at work, but I felt he needed to.
- 2:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:55SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 2:55SPEAKER_08: So he said it was it was strange because you know, I told him I I told him about it and he you know he had his reaction, which was just you know, dumbfounded.
- 3:08SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 3:09SPEAKER_08: And he said, This is probably not the right time for this, but I was thinking about the show.
- 3:20SPEAKER_08: And he said, How you know, I've been saying that I want to come on and I mean this is we're not getting any younger.
- 3:30SPEAKER_08: Exactly.
- 3:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 3:30SPEAKER_08: You know, and I and I wanna that's one of the things I want to do is go on the podcast.
- 3:36SPEAKER_08: And I've been wanting to, and he's like, you know, I I I need more fun in my life, and I need to laugh, and I need, you know, this and that, and and so I'm gonna try and really make this happen.
- 3:48SPEAKER_08: And so I got a text from him earlier today.
- 3:50SPEAKER_08: He says, Hey, just got the go-ahead.
- 3:52SPEAKER_08: I'm ready for tonight.
- 3:54SPEAKER_08: Where do you get the go ahead from?
- 3:55SPEAKER_08: From his wife.
- 3:56SPEAKER_08: Oh, okay.
- 3:57unknown: Gotcha.
- 3:58SPEAKER_08: You know, because you know, you you do, I mean, he's got two two young boys and a daughter, and uh his wife, you know, um works a lot, and he works a lot, yeah.
- 4:10SPEAKER_08: And and they have other responsibilities, and he just him, you know, hanging out with the guys or going on a podcast with the guys is is not a family priority, you know.
- 4:22SPEAKER_05: Well, it's not it doesn't sound like it's in the daily agenda.
- 4:25SPEAKER_08: Right, right.
- 4:26SPEAKER_08: So it's or the weekly agenda.
- 4:28SPEAKER_08: It's not I don't think it's that he needed her permission, it's just that he wanted to make sure that we're okay if I do this, you know.
- 4:37SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:38SPEAKER_08: I get it.
- 4:38SPEAKER_05: No, I I totally get it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_08: I get it.
- 4:39SPEAKER_05: So so we're gonna give him a couple I mean it's not like it's part of his you know, weekly routine like it is for us.
- 4:46SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 4:46SPEAKER_05: You know, well, I gotta go do this, I gotta do the podcast, you know.
- 4:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 4:51SPEAKER_08: So I'm excited because I don't know how much of the podcast he's gonna hang out for.
- 4:55SPEAKER_08: Um, but I I do want to reminisce a little bit because I went to high school with this kid.
- 5:00SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 5:01SPEAKER_08: Um, and and we were pretty good friends in high school, and um, you know, uh actually, well, I'll just wait till he comes on because I want to start I want to start from how I knew him, how you met him, and you know, um we'll just talk about some cool stuff.
- 5:19SPEAKER_08: He wanted to come on when um we were talking about the new Extreme album because he's a big fan of Extreme.
- 5:26SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 5:27SPEAKER_08: Um and he was he was a drummer, actually.
- 5:30SPEAKER_08: Or is a drummer, was a drummer.
- 5:31SPEAKER_08: He I don't think he plays much anymore, but well, you're you're never not a drummer.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: This is true.
- 5:36SPEAKER_08: This is true.
- 5:36SPEAKER_05: So I mean he's just he's just a drummer that doesn't play much, maybe so that's probably true, you know.
- 5:42SPEAKER_08: So uh we'll talk to him.
- 5:43SPEAKER_08: We've also got some new music that we're going to uh that we're going to feature and play.
- 5:50SPEAKER_08: Got some some new songs from some veteran bands.
- 5:53SPEAKER_08: We teased the Motley Cruz song last time, right?
- 5:56SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 5:56SPEAKER_08: Well now I have the whole thing.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 5:58SPEAKER_08: And it's I mean, the the riff is is cool that we heard, right?
- 6:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_05: But then it kind of Well, I'm sure once the vocals came in, it just ruins it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_05: Well yeah Well, I saw somebody comment on a somebody else was talking, I saw a comment and somebody was like, you know, that it they were hinting at that somebody used AI to do Vince's vocals.
- 6:21SPEAKER_05: Vince's vocals.
- 6:23SPEAKER_05: AI was somehow involved in it.
- 6:25SPEAKER_05: Well I'm sure he sang it, but I'm sure it's been pro tooled.
- 6:29SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 6:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah, like like uh auto-tuned or whatever.
- 6:32SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:33SPEAKER_08: Well, speaking of that, um I watched the new Bon Jovi documentary on Hulu over the weekend, because it came out last Friday.
- 6:44SPEAKER_08: It's called uh Thank You Good Night, I think it's what it's called.
- 6:47SPEAKER_08: And it's a it was a four-part um series.
- 6:52SPEAKER_08: So they had four hour-long episodes.
- 6:55SPEAKER_08: So it was like behind the music, but times four.
- 6:57SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 6:58SPEAKER_08: And it was good.
- 7:00SPEAKER_08: I mean you remember I was a big Bon Jovi fan back in the day.
- 7:05SPEAKER_08: They they kind of took a a turn after Crush and Have a Nice Day, and and uh I I mean I still have some of those albums that came after, but I don't listen to them because they're just there's no soul in them, I don't think.
- 7:21SPEAKER_08: Um anyway.
- 7:23SPEAKER_08: Um it was good.
- 7:24SPEAKER_08: Uh I got a feeling for what John Bon Jovi has been going through from watching that documentary.
- 7:32SPEAKER_08: Because what it is is, you know, as as he's reminiscing uh about the early days of Bon Jovi, um he's it goes from like twenty tw 2019 through 2022, and it f it's following John Bon Jovi and uh the issues that he's going through with his voice.
- 7:55SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 7:56SPEAKER_08: And he I and we talked about we've already talked about the fact that he had vocal surgery and he had, you know, like a vocal cord um either removed or moved or something, and they put like a stint in there.
- 8:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 8:10SPEAKER_08: And he had to learn to sing again, and so this is documenting that, and man, I mean, he is going through a lot, and he's been doing a lot of press lately.
- 8:22SPEAKER_08: I don't know if you've noticed that or not, because of this documentary and because of the new album.
- 8:27SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 8:28SPEAKER_08: Uh, and he's so he's everywhere.
- 8:29SPEAKER_08: He's on the talk shows, on podcasts, he's everywhere.
- 8:32SPEAKER_08: And he's said, you know, if if I don't get this back, I'm done.
- 8:41SPEAKER_08: You know?
- 8:42SPEAKER_08: Uh it's like quarterback, you know, if you can't if you can't throw and win the game, then why play?
- 8:49SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 8:50SPEAKER_08: So he's like, if I if I can only give how did he say this?
- 8:56SPEAKER_08: If I can only give a hundred percent of eighty percent, then I'm not gonna do it.
- 9:04SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean?
- 9:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 9:06SPEAKER_08: So, um and and it got me thinking, because towards the end you see them start working on this new album, which is called Forever.
- 9:14SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 9:15SPEAKER_08: Bon Jovi Forever.
- 9:16SPEAKER_08: And we we've already heard the song Legendary, and he sounds okay in it.
- 9:23SPEAKER_08: You know, like he's still singing in a lower register, but even in the chorus, which is a catchy Bon Jovi chorus, he's singing up there.
- 9:32SPEAKER_08: And if you watch the the documentary, he has a hard time singing at all.
- 9:38SPEAKER_08: Right?
- 9:39SPEAKER_08: Which got me thinking 'cause he he'd been working at this uh trying to get his voice in shape for to tour and for this new album and so on and forth.
- 9:50SPEAKER_08: And they said that he'd he got just enough to sing the new album.
- 9:54SPEAKER_08: But I'm in the my head I'm thinking yeah, okay.
- 9:58SPEAKER_08: Auto tune, you know, uh m studio tricks, obviously.
- 10:03SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 10:04SPEAKER_08: You know, I mean he's I'm sure he sang.
- 10:06SPEAKER_08: I'm sure he he delivered the vocal, but they fixed it.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: You know they did.
- 10:13SPEAKER_05: Well I that's what they do now.
- 10:15SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 10:15SPEAKER_08: They have to um I and again, I haven't heard the uh the new album except for that one song.
- 10:23SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 10:24SPEAKER_08: Uh but I'm not interested in it.
- 10:28SPEAKER_08: Um because I I just got I got you know ever since and this is this is talked about obviously in the documentary, ever since Richie left, and Richie you know, Richie had his issues.
- 10:41SPEAKER_08: He was an alcoholic and and you know missed his daughter and his you know and his family and stuff like that.
- 10:48SPEAKER_08: I mean you you can't fault the guy for I mean he actually said in the documentary, I hope you watch it sometime, but he actually said in the documentary, I don't regret leaving, I regret how I left.
- 10:58SPEAKER_08: Because he just didn't show up for a show.
- 11:00SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 11:00SPEAKER_08: You know, that like the beginning of a tour or the middle of a tour or something like that.
- 11:03SPEAKER_08: He just he just didn't show up.
- 11:05SPEAKER_08: Um so I uh ever since Richie left, the soul of the band has been lacking as far as I'm concerned.
- 11:16SPEAKER_08: Um and you can tell, I mean, it's all one-dimensional the the the songs that John Bon Jovi puts out or has put out since then.
- 11:26SPEAKER_08: It just seems one-dimensional.
- 11:28SPEAKER_08: Um you you really can't say anything because you haven't been paying attention at all to Bon Jovi since uh the 90s or the since Crush of Crush.
- 11:38SPEAKER_05: That was the last time I tuned in.
- 11:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_05: And Crush Actually, that's the last album, that's the last Bon Jovi album I ever bought.
- 11:46SPEAKER_08: Crush was a you know, like their back album.
- 11:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and it was pretty great.
- 11:50SPEAKER_05: It was good, it was a pretty great album.
- 11:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 11:53SPEAKER_08: And then um so you had uh Bounce after that, um, and then Have a Nice Day, and but it's all formulaic.
- 12:04SPEAKER_08: You know, it's like It's My Life was a huge song for Bon Jovi.
- 12:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 12:08SPEAKER_08: It was like a like a it got a whole new legion of fans.
- 12:11SPEAKER_08: And then you had Bounce, which is just like It's My Life, right?
- 12:19SPEAKER_08: And then you had Have a Nice Day, which is just like It's My Life, you know.
- 12:25SPEAKER_08: It's a formula, and there's this was a hit once, so let's do it again and again and again and again.
- 12:30SPEAKER_08: You know, and I'm not saying that the the Bonjoy albums after Have a Nice Day or after Crush were not good.
- 12:37SPEAKER_08: I mean there was good I'm sure there were good songs.
- 12:40SPEAKER_08: I just lost interest, you know.
- 12:42SPEAKER_05: You don't want to see your heroes decline.
- 12:45SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 12:47SPEAKER_05: It's like it's like anything.
- 12:48SPEAKER_05: It's like, you know, your favorite football player, your favorite whatever.
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: You know, once they start getting to a certain age and they can't perform anymore, you're like Right.
- 12:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, sorry, kid.
- 12:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you know, time's up.
- 13:01SPEAKER_08: Which is why I'm still following Sammy Hagar.
- 13:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah, because he hasn't lost it yet.
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: You know, I'm still waiting for the Sammy Hagar decline and it's not coming.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 13:09SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 13:10SPEAKER_08: Well, I mean it has a little bit, but but you wouldn't know the dude can still sing.
- 13:14SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 13:15SPEAKER_08: I mean, yeah, it's so it's unbelievable.
- 13:17SPEAKER_08: All right, let's um uh let's see.
- 13:21SPEAKER_08: I don't know if we want to I told him around now that we would be calling, but I also want to hear some of these songs.
- 13:31SPEAKER_08: Because and if I do that, I'd like him to I'd like him to stick around for climbing the wall and all that stuff.
- 13:39SPEAKER_08: Um actually I don't know if I can do that at the same time as I do this because of that.
- 13:44SPEAKER_08: Let's just get him, let's just get him on the line.
- 13:46SPEAKER_08: We'll see what happens.
- 13:47SPEAKER_08: We can we can always do that other stuff later.
- 13:50SPEAKER_08: And if he is a part of it, that's awesome.
- 13:52SPEAKER_08: And if he's not, that's okay too.
- 13:56SPEAKER_08: Uh let's see.
- 13:59SPEAKER_08: First time I'm using this.
- 14:03SPEAKER_05: This is exciting.
- 14:05SPEAKER_05: This is very exciting, I must say.
- 14:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it's been a while.
- 14:11SPEAKER_08: It's been a while.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: I told him, I said, as soon as I don't I don't know how to act now that we have a guest coming on.
- 14:18SPEAKER_05: I know, right?
- 14:19SPEAKER_05: What do we do?
- 14:20SPEAKER_05: Uh we do we talk to him or great.
- 14:23SPEAKER_08: That's a great question.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: I like how you put your phone down and eight things fell.
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, right?
- 14:30SPEAKER_05: That's awesome.
- 14:31SPEAKER_08: Oh man, you with us?
- 14:32SPEAKER_08: Wing it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_08: Wing it.
- 14:33SPEAKER_08: I am with you.
- 14:34SPEAKER_08: You are with me and Doug.
- 14:36SPEAKER_08: I have arrived.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: With me again.
- 14:43SPEAKER_08: Okay, so so Wild Man is an old uh classmate of mine.
- 14:47SPEAKER_08: I think kindergarten is is the last is uh not the last time I saw you.
- 14:51SPEAKER_05: Uh remember nap time?
- 14:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we did have nap time.
- 14:58SPEAKER_08: Yes, yes, we did miss nap time.
- 14:59SPEAKER_08: I miss nap time.
- 15:00SPEAKER_08: I have nap time to these days.
- 15:03SPEAKER_08: Um, you know, but yeah, we did have nap time in uh in in the kindergarten.
- 15:07SPEAKER_08: So yeah, I've known Jared since since since nap time.
- 15:10SPEAKER_08: Since nap time, yeah, in in kindergarten, in high school.
- 15:13SPEAKER_08: Nice! And uh and you you met him uh well, we used to hang out in my apartment, right?
- 15:18SPEAKER_08: I mean that's that's what it was.
- 15:20SPEAKER_05: Well, that's how I met everybody in this group.
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was gonna say that was back mid-90s.
- 15:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was 94 after I got out and got moved back here.
- 15:29SPEAKER_08: Out of the Marines, not jail.
- 15:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that's right.
- 15:31SPEAKER_03: And I will say, same thing here.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: I you what?
- 15:37SPEAKER_03: I did hear a lot about you and Bob and the Tomcats.
- 15:42SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah, oh yeah.
- 15:44SPEAKER_08: Well, I mean, you came down and recorded a movie with us one time.
- 15:47SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 15:47SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 15:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: After seeing some of the the the the awesome cinematic plus yes plus the A plus plus.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 15:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:58SPEAKER_03: HBO I heard was knocking on your door.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Your your episode Yeah, they were knocking saying, shut up!
- 16:03SPEAKER_08: But your your episode was the cream of the crop of all of the Tomcat episodes, I think.
- 16:08SPEAKER_08: One well, one of one of the top ones.
- 16:09SPEAKER_08: I mean it was it was uh and you were only in one.
- 16:12SPEAKER_08: You that which is which is a crap.
- 16:15SPEAKER_03: Just leave that comment vague enough that you know it's like that one was really good too.
- 16:22SPEAKER_03: That one is good.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Kind of good.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: No, they were they were terrible.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: They were terrible, but they were good.
- 16:30SPEAKER_05: You know, there was yeah, yeah.
- 16:31SPEAKER_05: Your improv skills were you know top notch.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: Oh yes.
- 16:34SPEAKER_05: Oh yes.
- 16:36SPEAKER_05: Um well, I do what I can.
- 16:39SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, that's true.
- 16:40SPEAKER_05: You you you and you do it well, sir.
- 16:42SPEAKER_05: And then and then thank you, sir.
- 16:44SPEAKER_08: One drummer to another.
- 16:46SPEAKER_08: And then yeah, we mentioned that too.
- 16:49SPEAKER_08: Uh we should have mentioned that too.
- 16:50SPEAKER_08: Uh you were part of the first like uh music group that I was involved with.
- 16:56SPEAKER_08: So we kind of cut our teeth together a little bit, and then I and then I kept going, and you and you got into computers.
- 17:02SPEAKER_03: I I did.
- 17:05SPEAKER_03: I'm so ashamed.
- 17:06SPEAKER_03: I'm so sorry.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: That seems so simplistic, though.
- 17:09SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 17:09SPEAKER_05: Well, I mean it's I don't like drums anymore.
- 17:11SPEAKER_05: I like computers.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Oh no, no, he likes drums.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know when's the last time you played, though.
- 17:18SPEAKER_03: Uh actually, uh it's been I think sometime last year.
- 17:24SPEAKER_03: We my family went over to another uh for dinner party, and um I I don't know if you saw the the uh what was the movie?
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: Titan A.E.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: Do you remember that movie?
- 17:40SPEAKER_03: Um vaguely.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: So it's kind of an animated all-star cast movie from like 99 or 2000, or somewhere around there.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but in the movie, Matt Damon's character is like a techie geek, and he walks into one of the this room, and there's like some sort of three-dimensional holographic map, and it's broken.
- 18:03SPEAKER_03: And as he walks in, he looks at me, he's like, ooh.
- 18:07SPEAKER_03: So as I got downstairs at this person's at this dinner party house, there's an electronic drum kit set up, and that was exactly my comment.
- 18:17SPEAKER_03: Ooh, and the great thing was I had it set on stadium, and I am just bashing out riffs and and paradiddles and you know, all the things, and nobody heard a thing.
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: You know, it was a concert in my head.
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: Did you did you have like headphones on?
- 18:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, that was the only way to really listen to it.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: And I thought, you know, kind of what is it like a Louis Armstrong moment?
- 18:51SPEAKER_03: And I thought to myself.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: I gotta get one of these.
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: Because I, you know, there's there's things in life that you fall in love with, and it just becomes part of your core being.
- 19:09SPEAKER_03: And you know, when you step away from that, you really step away from a part of yourself.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: And drumming, I for me, I remember I I airbanned the the crap out of all kinds of songs back in the day.
- 19:28SPEAKER_03: Uh anything Iron Maiden, um, Def Leopard, Molly Crew, you know, any of that, that hard stuff.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: I I just I was swinging sticks left and right and and all in rhythm.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: And you know, you you speak to that that moment of like sitting down and and all jamming together.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: We were all over at Doug Drew's house.
- 19:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 19:51SPEAKER_03: Doug had a drum set.
- 19:53SPEAKER_03: And I I remember like, you know, being that unchaperoned kid at the at the candy store, like, please, can can I I I'll five dollars, please.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: And I yeah, I I'll mow your grass, I don't I don't care what it please.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: And and I sat down and it was pure bliss.
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: And and and I think as as musicians yourselves, it's it's there's nothing like it.
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: There's you know, you sit down and you're just doing something.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: And you know, I know that like with drums, oh you just banging on tubes with with drum heads and dump bum dump.
- 20:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, it's it's not.
- 20:37SPEAKER_03: There's no there's artistry to that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: You can really, you know, some of the drum solos that I've seen through the years, especially jazz of all all genres.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, man, it it just you know, it's uh they take it to the extreme.
- 20:57SPEAKER_03: And it's you know, internally, it's like a decadence dance.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: And you know, I I just look at that and it's like, oh, those drums just play with me, you know.
- 21:09SPEAKER_03: So not to kind of pun out here, but you do you like the band Extreme?
- 21:17SPEAKER_03: Perhaps you've heard of them.
- 21:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I don't I think from Doug's point of view.
- 21:22SPEAKER_05: I feel like I should be going door to door.
- 21:24SPEAKER_05: Like, hello.
- 21:25SPEAKER_05: Hello, have you heard have you heard of our Lord and Savior Extreme?
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: Extreme.
- 21:30SPEAKER_05: Come, come, play with me.
- 21:32SPEAKER_08: I think uh I think get the funk out of your house.
- 21:36SPEAKER_08: From Doug's perspective, uh I think you're preaching to the choir because I think he feels I think he feels the same way, right?
- 21:43SPEAKER_05: About about drums?
- 21:44SPEAKER_08: About drums, yeah.
- 21:45SPEAKER_05: Well, yeah, I mean it's i it takes a certain uh I don't want to say a certain type of mentality, but you have to be you have it 'cause it's true.
- 21:55SPEAKER_05: Well, I was gonna say a certain type of stupidity, but uh that's true.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 22:00SPEAKER_05: But but drummers are a different breed than than normal musicians.
- 22:06SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: Except for bass players.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 22:08SPEAKER_03: Nobody likes the bass player.
- 22:09SPEAKER_05: Nobody likes the bass player.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but you you gotta I mean drumming is is a whole different thing, you know.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, guitar players and bass players are getting turned about, oh, it's gotta be, you know, you're what what what key are we in?
- 22:26SPEAKER_05: Oh, Evelyn?
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 22:30SPEAKER_05: You know, drum drummers are like, I don't care.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:33SPEAKER_05: We're in the key of we're in the key of bang.
- 22:36SPEAKER_05: Bang, bang, bang.
- 22:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: So it's it's I am I am happy to say too that my son, who I was pining to have sit down with the drums, is is flourishing with that instrument.
- 22:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, uh somebody pulled some strings with you for you there too, by the way.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: And I am eternally grateful.
- 22:57SPEAKER_08: That's a that's a story for another time, but yeah, I was another time.
- 23:01SPEAKER_08: I was largely responsible for his son taking up the drums.
- 23:04SPEAKER_08: Actually, no, he was responsible for his son taking up the drums.
- 23:07SPEAKER_08: I was partially responsible for his son uh doing drums in school.
- 23:13SPEAKER_03: Um because there was and I I I want to say that I think his music teacher currently is not disappointed in that because I we got a um I don't know if it was a report card or or mid-grade report or something, but to date uh his comment is the only comment that's ever been written in, and it was it was just the fact that he's doing a fantastic job with his drumming.
- 23:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 23:45SPEAKER_08: So so to l uh long story short, so uh in in middle school, um you he you can only take so many of an instrument, right?
- 23:55SPEAKER_08: And most every a lot of people want to play drums, yeah.
- 23:58SPEAKER_08: And and he was not going to be able to.
- 24:05SPEAKER_08: And I had a conversation um and pulled some strings and he was able to play the drums.
- 24:12SPEAKER_08: So it was it all worked out, um, and and obviously it's it was the right thing to do.
- 24:19SPEAKER_05: I think deep down everybody wants to be a drummer.
- 24:22SPEAKER_05: There's something there's something primal about drums.
- 24:27SPEAKER_05: Before there was a guitar, before there was any other sort of instruments, people were beating on stuff.
- 24:33SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 24:33SPEAKER_05: True.
- 24:34SPEAKER_05: So you know deep down each other people deny it, but everybody wants to be the drummer.
- 24:42SPEAKER_08: Okay, I don't want to bring this back to guitar, but I'm going to.
- 24:46SPEAKER_08: Because you said you and your six strings.
- 24:52SPEAKER_08: No, wait.
- 24:53SPEAKER_08: So you said something uh when we first started talking about how uh you mean you were you were just in love with the drums, and so uh one of the things that we mentioned a little earlier, um actually we mentioned recorded and then uh subsequently deleted.
- 25:12SPEAKER_08: Um because we're that good.
- 25:14SPEAKER_08: Because we're that good.
- 25:15SPEAKER_08: Um is that we've been trying to get you on the podcast for a long time, and you know, w uh for one reason or another it wasn't happening, but uh and we haven't mentioned it this time around, but we just lost a friend of ours.
- 25:29SPEAKER_08: And one of the one of the impet impetuses for you coming on the podcast this particular day was because we lost him yesterday, and um we were you were you said to yourself, Life is too short.
- 25:44SPEAKER_08: Um I need I need more fun in my life.
- 25:47SPEAKER_08: I've wanted to do this for a long time, so I'm gonna do it.
- 25:51SPEAKER_08: And you and here we are.
- 25:52SPEAKER_08: Do the thing.
- 25:53SPEAKER_08: And I was thinking some of the best advice that you can ever give anybody is do the thing.
- 25:57SPEAKER_08: Do the thing.
- 25:58SPEAKER_08: I was thinking about our conversation yesterday, because um I was the one that that called you and and told you about our buddy that we just lost, and I was thinking about our conversation, and what you just said about drums, I feel the same way about guitars.
- 26:17SPEAKER_08: Um I have several guitars, I will always buy more guitars.
- 26:23SPEAKER_08: I don't need more guitars.
- 26:25SPEAKER_08: I want more guitars.
- 26:27SPEAKER_08: I love guitars, and I you know there is it's one of the few things that makes me genuinely happy.
- 26:42SPEAKER_08: Um even though I'm not really good at it.
- 26:45SPEAKER_08: I mean I'm always learning, and I think maybe that's why it makes me happy is because I can put I can pick up a guitar and and figure something out the and and but like th theoretically, music music theoretically, if that's even a thing, um, oh, that goes there and that's connected to that, and that I could just do that, and it would be like, you know, and that's like mind-blowing to me.
- 27:12SPEAKER_08: And I can just sit and noodle on a guitar and be completely content in my life.
- 27:18SPEAKER_09: Yeah, there you go.
- 27:19SPEAKER_08: You know, and it's it's the same thing with you with drums, you guys.
- 27:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: Well, probably both of us to for that matter.
- 27:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, which makes this conversation difficult because when you say you with the drums, which you is it you or you Doug?
- 27:35SPEAKER_03: Or is it the wild man?
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 27:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 27:38SPEAKER_03: But let me let me add to that too.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Um, I think in your case, one of the best how do I want to say this?
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: As a as somebody who can't isn't like you know, like top of the the I'm the number one guitar player in the entire world, for people like that, teaching is difficult because you have this inherent ability to just get it, and to to articulate that to somebody who doesn't is difficult.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: It is very and very, very easy to fail at.
- 28:15SPEAKER_03: Whereas if you're struggling yourself, like, well, if I okay, if I move my hand and and do and there it is, there it is.
- 28:23SPEAKER_03: Okay, so so when you do this to do this, this is how you want to do this, and then we'll we'll get to that.
- 28:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's right.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: That's how you do it.
- 28:32SPEAKER_03: So, you know, i i I think when you're not at the top of the game, not necessarily the top of your game, but the game, you have that ability to translate to somebody who wants to do the thing, if you will.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 28:49SPEAKER_08: Yeah, no, I think there's probably truth to that.
- 28:52SPEAKER_08: Um, and I think the what's that old adage?
- 28:55SPEAKER_08: If you can't uh if you can't those that can do, those that can't teach.
- 29:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:04SPEAKER_03: So sorry, dude.
- 29:07SPEAKER_03: We're just laying it bare for the world now.
- 29:09SPEAKER_08: Well, here's here's a here's kind of a a uh drummer's roll.
- 29:14SPEAKER_08: Here's you know, it all comes back around, right?
- 29:16SPEAKER_08: So, you know, we were talking about how you and I were in a band with Doug Drew.
- 29:21SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 29:22SPEAKER_08: Um and I'm now a music teacher at the at the middle school, and and guess who I have in my chorus?
- 29:28SPEAKER_08: Doug Drew's daughter.
- 29:30SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah.
- 29:32SPEAKER_03: It all comes full circle.
- 29:33SPEAKER_03: It all comes full circle, yeah.
- 29:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: Is that Simba?
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: Simba, is that do I hear you?
- 29:41SPEAKER_03: Circle of life.
- 29:44SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 29:45SPEAKER_08: So um all of our I don't, I mean, we're not gonna climb the wall again, right?
- 29:50SPEAKER_08: No.
- 29:50SPEAKER_08: No, because so here, so to full disclosure here, um we um because there are set at least 17 people that listen to this podcast, so we want to make sure that they know.
- 30:01SPEAKER_08: So we did record a whole interview with uh Jared before, and it it didn't take.
- 30:07SPEAKER_08: We actually climbed the wall and we talked about uh extreme pornography.
- 30:13SPEAKER_08: That was the CD of the day.
- 30:15SPEAKER_08: Um it but it it didn't take, it didn't record.
- 30:18SPEAKER_08: So this this whole conversation here, let me hold on, I want to check.
- 30:22SPEAKER_05: That may or may not still be going.
- 30:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, still recording, still recording.
- 30:26SPEAKER_08: The abridged version.
- 30:28SPEAKER_08: This uh this whole conversation is the second time we talked to Jared this evening.
- 30:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 30:34SPEAKER_08: So um we're not gonna climb the wall of tunes today.
- 30:37SPEAKER_08: We're not gonna do the be um uh bonus beatles minute or bonus beatles bit today.
- 30:43SPEAKER_08: Um so um we're just gonna I think a good thing to end with.
- 30:49SPEAKER_05: Well, I w I want to talk about our friend.
- 30:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.
- 30:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I want to talk about our friend because I don't I didn't know him as long as you guys did.
- 31:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but he gave you He gave me the one of the greatest gifts anybody can ever give.
- 31:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 31:07SPEAKER_05: And that's a nickname.
- 31:08SPEAKER_08: A nickname.
- 31:09SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 31:09SPEAKER_08: And actually, Jared, I don't even know if you know this, but the nickname the nickname that Phil had for Doug was Chipper Shredder.
- 31:19SPEAKER_08: And here's what yeah, Chipper Shredder.
- 31:22SPEAKER_08: So we were down, we were down We were down um Common Crossing was rehearsing.
- 31:29SPEAKER_08: We used to go to um the Grange Hall in Blaine once a week.
- 31:34SPEAKER_08: It was like every Monday night.
- 31:35SPEAKER_09: Every Monday night, yeah.
- 31:36SPEAKER_08: And I remember that.
- 31:37SPEAKER_08: And we we would practice, and every once in a while Phil would come down.
- 31:41SPEAKER_08: Actually, a lot of people you would you too.
- 31:43SPEAKER_05: I mean, every once in a while we'd have people come down and just Well I don't I honestly don't remember any time, many times when it was just the band.
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, people came back.
- 31:53SPEAKER_05: There was always somebody coming and just listening, which was great because it was like instant feedback.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 31:59SPEAKER_05: Is this song working?
- 32:00SPEAKER_05: Uh you know, you know.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 32:02SPEAKER_05: Uh Shane Shane had a great adage about Phil.
- 32:05SPEAKER_05: I was like, hey Phil, what did you think of that?
- 32:06SPEAKER_05: Well, it didn't suck.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: So that was Phil.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: That was Phil.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: That was Phil.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: He had a way with words.
- 32:13SPEAKER_03: He really like that was boy, if somebody had a superpower.
- 32:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 32:18SPEAKER_08: Oh yeah.
- 32:19SPEAKER_08: It's uh geez.
- 32:20SPEAKER_08: But we were but we didn't really study.
- 32:23SPEAKER_08: So I think it was the night, wasn't it the night that Heather and Kariani were saying goodbye because they were moving?
- 32:29SPEAKER_08: No, I don't think so.
- 32:30SPEAKER_05: You don't think I don't think it was that night.
- 32:32SPEAKER_05: Because there was a lot going on that night, but it wasn't I I'm I'm positive it wasn't that night.
- 32:37SPEAKER_08: Anyway, we were standing outside and we were talking about something, and he said Well, well, it was you know it was us, and Kariani was there, Phil was there.
- 32:46SPEAKER_05: And I don't know what the subject was, but Kariani was like, Oh, I'm afraid of Doug.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: And Phil pops up and says, Well, I'm not, and everybody just kind of stopped, and everybody was like, Why are you not afraid of Doug?
- 33:01SPEAKER_05: And Phil said, Well, I know better than to make a chipper shredder mad.
- 33:08SPEAKER_05: And then he walked over to me and he started petting my head.
- 33:10SPEAKER_05: He said, Nice chipper shredder.
- 33:16SPEAKER_08: So Yeah.
- 33:18SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 33:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Phil was uh Phil was one of a kind.
- 33:22SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 33:22SPEAKER_08: Phil was one of the first people.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: Are you still with us, Wildman?
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: Is he even there?
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: Are you there?
- 33:31SPEAKER_01: What the heck?
- 33:32SPEAKER_05: Is he there?
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: Is it recording?
- 33:34SPEAKER_05: Oh, he's muted.
- 33:35SPEAKER_05: Oh, he's muted.
- 33:36SPEAKER_05: Did you mute him or you?
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: No, I didn't mute him.
- 33:37SPEAKER_08: He must he must be he must be doing something.
- 33:39SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 33:40SPEAKER_08: So um I think Phil was, and this was back in the 90s, I think, was one of the first people that I knew that worked remotely.
- 33:53SPEAKER_05: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 33:54SPEAKER_08: He was a computer guy, you know, and and he was one of the one of the first people that I that I knew of that the company valued him so much that he could live wherever he wanted, yep, and and worked from his home.
- 34:08SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 34:09SPEAKER_08: Um, it was yeah, and I always was like, that's gotta be the life, man.
- 34:13SPEAKER_08: You can go to the store.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Was that down in New Hampshire?
- 34:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: I remember going down and hanging out with the guys down there and and looking in the roof, and it was like bed, computer.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: What?
- 34:30SPEAKER_03: They were like, oh yeah, that's Phil's office.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: What?
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: Seriously, yeah.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: He was one of the first guys, the first guys that I knew of that had that that setup.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: So cool.
- 34:41SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 34:42SPEAKER_08: And uh, and I think still, I mean, uh, right up until uh he passed away, I think that's what he was still doing.
- 34:48SPEAKER_08: I'm not sure, but I think he was still a computer guy as far as I know, yeah.
- 34:52SPEAKER_08: Working remotely for what it was, what, 30 years, 40 years?
- 34:56SPEAKER_05: As long as I'm almost as long as I've known him.
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it wouldn't be 40 years, it'd be 30 years anyway.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: At least he was so I I gotta tell you too, two of the guys that are on my team actually used to work at ATX.
- 35:10SPEAKER_03: And they both knew Phil.
- 35:13SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Well the ATX.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: They didn't they wouldn't be able to pick him out from a picture of one person, yeah.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: But they knew, I mean, he was like the guy.
- 35:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah, he was like top up he was top brass up there, sort of.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: I I remember running into Phil back way back in the very beginning.
- 35:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, I can't remember.
- 35:37SPEAKER_03: I was working in Washburn at the time, and of course that's where the company started.
- 35:41SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 35:42SPEAKER_03: Oh I forgot.
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: And um we ran into each other, and he was talking about how he had to work X amount of hours and he was gonna get this insane bonus at the end of the year, and he said, and then I'm just gonna get done.
- 35:58SPEAKER_03: He said, Um I'll find something else to do.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: And so I was like, Well, it's a lot of hours.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: Uh where are you at right now?
- 36:06SPEAKER_03: He says, I'm just working regular weeks.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: He says, But at the end of the year, I know it'll catch up.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: And then he did it, he got the bonus, and then he ended up staying with the company.
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: So, and you know, kudos to him to being so talented and and so good at what he did that he was able to dictate what he was gonna do for the company, right?
- 36:32SPEAKER_03: As opposed to to, you know, what what we're gonna tell you what we're you're gonna do for the company.
- 36:38SPEAKER_08: So um, I'm trying to think of other things I remember about Phil.
- 36:43SPEAKER_08: I remember at a graduation party at Praveen Prasana's house.
- 36:48SPEAKER_08: Uh, I think you were probably there.
- 36:50SPEAKER_08: Um, and we were downstairs, and so Phil was Phil, and he walked by my friend at the time, but she became my wife.
- 37:06SPEAKER_08: And she was uh my wife was known as uh an athlete.
- 37:11SPEAKER_08: She was a soccer player and a and a basketball player, and she was known to play sports.
- 37:16SPEAKER_08: She was known to play sports, and Phil walked by her and I think grabbed her ass.
- 37:27SPEAKER_08: I think I'll have to clarify this one, but I'm pretty sure he grabbed her ass or he pinched her or something like that.
- 37:35SPEAKER_08: She turned around.
- 37:37SPEAKER_08: I don't know if you remember this, Jared, or if you were there.
- 37:39SPEAKER_08: But she I don't think I was there.
- 37:41SPEAKER_08: She kicked him into behind so hard he it was lifted off the ground.
- 37:50SPEAKER_08: And I think I think he thought it was funny, but was also in pain.
- 37:59SPEAKER_08: So he was so he got a little angry at her for kicking him.
- 38:05SPEAKER_08: Um but it was like he was joking around, but she didn't it wasn't a joke to her, and so but she she heard him, and so he was a little bent out of shape.
- 38:19SPEAKER_08: I remember that seeing that, and like, okay, well, I'm not gonna mess with her.
- 38:23SPEAKER_08: And also, and also that's very hot.
- 38:26SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 38:29SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 38:30SPEAKER_08: I remember I I'll always remember that.
- 38:33SPEAKER_08: And I'll remember the chipper shredder thing, and I'll remember uh it didn't suck.
- 38:38SPEAKER_08: And I have I think uh you know, um I I know you remember this, but it would this would be nice to do something with.
- 38:49SPEAKER_08: Um I still have, I think I still have.
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: Do you still have Call Me Phil somewhere on tape?
- 38:57SPEAKER_05: Do you remember that?
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: I don't remember that.
- 39:00SPEAKER_08: Let me finish what I was gonna say.
- 39:01SPEAKER_08: Okay, go ahead.
- 39:02SPEAKER_08: So I think I still have Phil gave me Um sheets and sheets and sheets of lyrics or poetry that he'd written.
- 39:11SPEAKER_05: Oh, I didn't know this.
- 39:12SPEAKER_08: And yeah, you did because there was one um little piece of music.
- 39:18SPEAKER_08: Shane made up a bass line.
- 39:20SPEAKER_08: Boodaloot doot doot dootaloo doot do.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, yeah.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: Life is a ring of possible joys, beautiful.
- 39:31SPEAKER_08: That was a Phil Vance poem.
- 39:33SPEAKER_08: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 39:34SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 39:35SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 39:35SPEAKER_08: So I think if I can find it, I want to do something with that.
- 39:40SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 39:41SPEAKER_08: Um in honor of Phil.
- 39:43SPEAKER_08: So what do you think that would be appropriate?
- 39:45SPEAKER_05: What is this call me Phil thing?
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: You it was like at the end of one of our Blake Street Boy albums, there was an instrumental called Call Me Phil.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: And it was just us having a conversation with Phil.
- 39:58SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: And you were just noodling guitar and there was a drum machine and all kinds of stuff.
- 40:03SPEAKER_05: Was Phil in it?
- 40:04SPEAKER_05: Phil was in it because it was called Call Me Phil.
- 40:06SPEAKER_08: I have to find that out.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: That's on the first album?
- 40:08SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 40:09SPEAKER_05: It was in one of the I I think it was one of the later Blake Street Boy albums.
- 40:12SPEAKER_08: Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah.
- 40:14SPEAKER_08: I know exactly what you're talking about.
- 40:15SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:16SPEAKER_08: I gotta find that.
- 40:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:18SPEAKER_05: I think that uh resurrect that.
- 40:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 40:20SPEAKER_08: That was pretty great.
- 40:21SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 40:21SPEAKER_08: But I do I want to find I when we're done the podcast, I'm gonna look in this, I got a bin here of old lyrics, and I'm pretty sure I purposefully kept those poems that he gave me.
- 40:35SPEAKER_08: It was like, I don't know, several pages of poems.
- 40:40SPEAKER_08: And I because I had always said, um, you know, if you have any poems uh that that would aid in my songwriting, you know, he's like, Here.
- 40:49SPEAKER_08: Oh, and that's another thing.
- 40:52SPEAKER_08: Do you remember you still with us, Wild Man?
- 40:55SPEAKER_08: I am here.
- 40:56SPEAKER_08: Okay.
- 40:57SPEAKER_08: Um, so do you remember the first keyboard that I had?
- 41:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 41:04SPEAKER_08: That was Phil's.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, I didn't know.
- 41:06SPEAKER_08: And that was the way Phil worked sometimes.
- 41:09SPEAKER_08: Um he believed in my writing and believed in what I was trying to do.
- 41:19SPEAKER_08: And so he brought over a keyboard one time, and he had just paid, I think, four hundred dollars for it.
- 41:26SPEAKER_08: Which is a lot of money.
- 41:27SPEAKER_08: Oh, yeah, you know, back then.
- 41:28SPEAKER_08: Especially back then.
- 41:29SPEAKER_08: But he had a lot of money because of his job.
- 41:33SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 41:34SPEAKER_08: And so he spent four or five hundred dollars on this keyboard and and he brought it over to show me.
- 41:39SPEAKER_08: And he says, I'll tell you what, he says, you we'll keep it here.
- 41:46SPEAKER_08: And uh when I when I want it back, I'll come get it.
- 41:51SPEAKER_08: And he never came to get it.
- 41:52SPEAKER_08: Oh, of course he didn't know.
- 41:53SPEAKER_08: You know, he bought it for me, basically.
- 41:55SPEAKER_08: That was his way of giving it to me without giving it to me.
- 41:59SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 41:59SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 42:00SPEAKER_05: So Phil was never demonstrative about anything.
- 42:03SPEAKER_08: No.
- 42:04SPEAKER_08: No.
- 42:05SPEAKER_05: You know, so it was like, you know.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: It was hard to tell it was hard to gauge what Phil was thinking sometimes.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 42:12SPEAKER_05: If he wasn't saying anything.
- 42:13SPEAKER_05: If he was saying something, then you knew exactly what Phil was talking, you know.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: Because he never held back when he was talking.
- 42:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:19SPEAKER_05: But as far as what he was thinking at the time, yeah, that was a whole other thing, as far as I was concerned.
- 42:25SPEAKER_08: Right.
- 42:26SPEAKER_08: So we we hung with the same group of people, and sometimes we we did things and and Phil was just there.
- 42:37SPEAKER_08: You know?
- 42:37SPEAKER_08: You know what I mean, Wildman?
- 42:39SPEAKER_08: I mean, he was just among us.
- 42:44SPEAKER_08: You know, he didn't he didn't say a lot sometimes, he was just there.
- 42:48SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 42:48SPEAKER_08: You know, and but it was kind of a silent observer.
- 42:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 42:52SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 42:52SPEAKER_08: And it was good to have him there.
- 42:54SPEAKER_08: And I asked him, I remember asking him one time because he was so smart.
- 42:58SPEAKER_08: He was uh just incredibly smart.
- 43:01SPEAKER_08: And every time, you know, he'd either correct me on something or he'd give me some sort of piece of knowledge, right?
- 43:09SPEAKER_08: And I remember saying to him one time, it must suck to know everything.
- 43:16SPEAKER_08: You know, just like because I enjoy not knowing things and learning them.
- 43:23SPEAKER_08: And I just said to him one time, I said, it must be awful just to know everything.
- 43:27SPEAKER_01: He's like, No, it's cool.
- 43:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's Phil.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's Phil.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: He said, No, it's cool.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: It's cool.
- 43:38SPEAKER_01: I enjoy it.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: I remember the last time I saw him.
- 43:44SPEAKER_05: Uh it was it was this was some years ago.
- 43:47SPEAKER_05: We were we you and I were heading into the Northeastland for a gig, and he and his wife were coming out of Yeah.
- 43:53SPEAKER_05: And I remember that too.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we just it was just random.
- 43:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, nobody you know didn't know he was up, nothing like that.
- 43:59SPEAKER_05: I just I Remember giving them a big hug.
- 44:01SPEAKER_05: He gave me a hug back.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: Like no time had passed.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly.
- 44:04SPEAKER_05: It was great.
- 44:06SPEAKER_08: Well, we're gonna miss him.
- 44:07SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 44:08SPEAKER_08: Um, we're gonna miss him.
- 44:09SPEAKER_08: It was just a tragic thing when you get our age, and you know, you just never know.
- 44:14SPEAKER_08: You never know when when your time is when your time is short.
- 44:16SPEAKER_08: Life is short.
- 44:17SPEAKER_08: Life is short.
- 44:17SPEAKER_08: Life is precious.
- 44:18SPEAKER_08: Do the thing.
- 44:20SPEAKER_08: Do the thing.
- 44:20SPEAKER_08: Life is precious, life is short, do the thing.
- 44:23SPEAKER_08: Yep, good advice.
- 44:24SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 44:25SPEAKER_08: Uh and we want to thank you, Wild Man, for doing the thing and and finally coming on the podcast with us.
- 44:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah, man.
- 44:31SPEAKER_08: Um, it was nice to have two conversations.
- 44:34SPEAKER_08: Uh one one that we have on tape.
- 44:36SPEAKER_08: One that we'll we'll keep amongst ourselves.
- 44:40SPEAKER_03: We talked amongst ourselves.
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: And we need to uh we need to do this again.
- 44:45SPEAKER_08: If if you're able to at some time in the future, in the near future, the far future, whatever, you know, whatever you're able to do, um, we'll have you on anytime, anywhere.
- 44:55SPEAKER_03: Maybe next time I'll join in the studio.
- 44:57SPEAKER_08: Well, it's funny that you say that because my wife came down uh and in the you know, after we messed up the first recording and she was like, What happened?
- 45:06SPEAKER_08: And I was telling her all about it.
- 45:07SPEAKER_08: And then you sent the text, you said next time I'll come to the studio.
- 45:10SPEAKER_08: And Doug and I are looking around the studio, we're like, Yeah, probably not.
- 45:17SPEAKER_05: You can sit on that amp over there.
- 45:19SPEAKER_08: Yeah, because that's okay.
- 45:22SPEAKER_03: There's no room for anyone else in this hole.
- 45:26SPEAKER_03: Listen, I'll tell you, if if I can sit comfortably, and Doug can appreciate this, if I can sit comfortably on a drum stool.
- 45:35SPEAKER_03: Well, I think an amp is okay.
- 45:37SPEAKER_08: You got a drum stool in the other room.
- 45:38SPEAKER_08: I have a drum set and a drum stool in the other room.
- 45:41SPEAKER_08: We could we could do a jam session or something.
- 45:42SPEAKER_08: Maybe I'll just show up for the drum set.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: You can talk amongst yourselves.
- 45:49SPEAKER_08: My uh my basement is you know, it's almost like we're hoarders.
- 45:53SPEAKER_08: We're not hoarders, but it looks like we're hoarders.
- 45:56SPEAKER_08: Uh we need we need to we need to purge.
- 45:58SPEAKER_08: Uh it's just my basement.
- 45:59SPEAKER_08: It's just you can't.
- 46:00SPEAKER_08: That's okay.
- 46:00SPEAKER_03: You can't do you know what the definition of being a hoarder is.
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: What?
- 46:03SPEAKER_03: We don't look like hoarders.
- 46:08SPEAKER_05: Well, that's a hoarder.
- 46:10SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 46:10SPEAKER_08: We we we need to purge.
- 46:12SPEAKER_08: You can't even walk through my basement in some in some parts of it.
- 46:14SPEAKER_08: So but yeah, we would we I I mean I'd love to have you here.
- 46:18SPEAKER_08: We can go there too.
- 46:19SPEAKER_08: I mean, we're we're portable.
- 46:20SPEAKER_08: Yeah, we'll figure it out.
- 46:22SPEAKER_08: We'll figure it out.
- 46:22SPEAKER_08: But we want to have you on again.
- 46:24SPEAKER_03: I I'm not a hoarder either.
- 46:25SPEAKER_03: Just just so you're um all right, man.
- 46:30SPEAKER_08: This our time is gonna is gonna um end soon, so I want to wrap it up before we before I lose you.
- 46:35SPEAKER_08: So thank you so much for for hanging out with us.
- 46:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah, brother.
- 46:38SPEAKER_08: Thanks for having me.
- 46:39SPEAKER_08: And uh rest in peace to our buddy Phil.
- 46:42SPEAKER_08: Uh I thought this was kind of a neat way to celebrate his life and to remember him.
- 46:47SPEAKER_08: And uh he was a great guy.
- 46:49SPEAKER_08: He was a great guy.
- 46:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 46:51SPEAKER_08: Yeah, great guy.
- 46:52SPEAKER_08: Uh, and so are you, man.
- 46:54SPEAKER_08: Yeah, dude.
- 46:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, shucks.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: I know.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: Believe me, I live with myself.
- 47:01SPEAKER_03: I I I've I have known myself the longest on this earth, and I am a damn fine fellow.
- 47:10SPEAKER_08: Okay, wait, before you go, actually, I have to tell this story, and I I think I've told Doug this story, but I'm not, I'm not, I don't remember.
- 47:17SPEAKER_08: We were on a band trip.
- 47:19SPEAKER_08: Uh we're on a bus.
- 47:21SPEAKER_08: And this kid um cracked a joke or something like that.
- 47:26SPEAKER_08: And I'm sitting with him in this in the in the seat, in the bus seat.
- 47:29SPEAKER_08: And he cracked a joke or something, and all these girls like on the bef in front of us and behind us were just laughing, right?
- 47:38SPEAKER_08: And he looks at me and he goes, I'm making people laugh.
- 47:47SPEAKER_08: Good.
- 47:48SPEAKER_08: I laughed for five minutes because he was so just full of joy that he was making a difference.
- 47:59SPEAKER_05: Well, seriously, though, if you can make somebody laugh for no reason whatsoever, but it was his reaction.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh yeah.
- 48:07SPEAKER_05: But seriously, I mean, if you could make somebody laugh, it's one of the greatest powers ever.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: You know what I mean?
- 48:12SPEAKER_05: But I think I don't know if we were freshmen or sophomore, I don't we but we were really young.
- 48:16SPEAKER_04: And he's I'm making people laugh.
- 48:20SPEAKER_03: I I honestly I think it was on a band.
- 48:23SPEAKER_03: If it was on a band trip, it would have been our junior or senior year.
- 48:27SPEAKER_08: I find that hard to believe because I felt like we were really young.
- 48:30SPEAKER_08: I mean, we were really young, even our junior year.
- 48:33SPEAKER_08: We were young, yeah.
- 48:34SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but oh man, I just remember that.
- 48:37SPEAKER_08: Anyway, I don't want to keep you because we're gonna get cut off here in a second.
- 48:40SPEAKER_08: So um uh thanks, brother, and uh we'll be uh we'll be in touch.
- 48:45SPEAKER_08: We'll have you on again.
- 48:46SPEAKER_03: Absolutely.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Sounds sounds divine.
- 48:48SPEAKER_03: All right, man.
- 48:49SPEAKER_03: Looking forward to it.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: Okay, cool.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: All right, bro.
- 48:51SPEAKER_03: To the extreme.
- 48:53SPEAKER_08: To the extreme.
- 48:54SPEAKER_08: I I look I wait, wait, hold on.
- 48:57SPEAKER_08: Uh all right, stop.
- 48:58SPEAKER_08: To the extreme, I like the man.
- 49:00SPEAKER_08: Hold on, hold on.
- 49:01SPEAKER_08: He wrote one.
- 49:02SPEAKER_08: All right, stop.
- 49:03SPEAKER_08: Scoop it out and savor.
- 49:05SPEAKER_08: Ice is back with my brand new flavors.
- 49:06SPEAKER_08: Someone grabbed a hold of me tightly.
- 49:09SPEAKER_08: Um uh I can't remember.
- 49:11SPEAKER_08: Grab it a hold tightly.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: Um uh I don't know.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: I gotta give props because that was another classmate of ours that wrote that.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: Who was that?
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: It was like, yeah.
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: Was it Dennis?
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: Dennis, yeah.
- 49:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Dennis.
- 49:24SPEAKER_08: Dennis the menace.
- 49:25SPEAKER_08: Go to Chernobyl and I'll glow.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: I probably still have that.
- 49:31SPEAKER_08: I thought that was you that wrote that.
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 49:34SPEAKER_03: He wrote it, and I was like, this is the best thing.
- 49:36SPEAKER_03: I think I helped him write it a little bit.
- 49:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah, I think you did.
- 49:39SPEAKER_08: I think I remembered that.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, the the whole, all right, stop, scoop it out and save her.
- 49:43SPEAKER_03: Ice is back with a brand new flavor.
- 49:45SPEAKER_08: Someone grab a hold of me tightly.
- 49:47SPEAKER_08: Uh, I can't remember.
- 49:50SPEAKER_08: Anyway, anyway.
- 49:51SPEAKER_08: Um digress.
- 49:53SPEAKER_08: This is a thing that we do.
- 49:55SPEAKER_08: We we prolong the ending of the show.
- 49:57SPEAKER_08: Yeah, that's right.
- 49:57SPEAKER_08: That's right.
- 49:58SPEAKER_03: Drag it out.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:59SPEAKER_03: No, you hang up first.
- 50:02SPEAKER_08: No, you hang up.
- 50:04SPEAKER_08: No, you hang up first.
- 50:05SPEAKER_08: Wouldn't it be funny if I just cut him off?
- 50:12SPEAKER_08: Is he gone?
- 50:13SPEAKER_08: That's cold, bro.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: I'll just mute him.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: Ice ice Brian.
- 50:24SPEAKER_08: All right, man.
- 50:25SPEAKER_08: We are gonna cut it out.
- 50:26SPEAKER_08: So uh I'll uh we'll we'll we'll get in touch with you and we'll have you on again soon.
- 50:31SPEAKER_08: Absolutely.
- 50:31SPEAKER_08: Thanks, man.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: All right, thanks forward to it.
- 50:33SPEAKER_03: Thanks, guys.
- 50:34SPEAKER_03: All right, we'll see you.
- 50:38SPEAKER_08: Yeah, it was fun.
- 50:39SPEAKER_08: It was good to have him on.
- 50:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, that was fun.
- 50:40SPEAKER_05: Um I miss that guy.
- 50:41SPEAKER_05: I do too.
- 50:42SPEAKER_08: I miss hanging out with him.
- 50:43SPEAKER_08: I do too.
- 50:44SPEAKER_08: You know, and he he's just a he's a he's a he's a good guy, he's a fun guy.
- 50:49SPEAKER_05: He's a good guy, he's he's one of the he's one of the best guys I know.
- 50:52SPEAKER_08: Yeah, really is.
- 50:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:54SPEAKER_08: Um really good dad, real proud of his kids and and really uh involved in in everything his kids are into.
- 51:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 51:06SPEAKER_08: And he's a hockey dad, you know, and that's that's saying a lot because hockey, when you get your kid involved in hockey, there's a lot that goes with it, and he's right there in the mix.
- 51:15SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 51:16SPEAKER_08: I mean he's yeah, he's he's a good dude.
- 51:18SPEAKER_08: He's a good dude.
- 51:19SPEAKER_08: So um yeah, we're gonna call that the the the episode.
- 51:22SPEAKER_08: I know we didn't do a lot of what we usually do, but I think it was kind of a special episode for our buddy Phil.
- 51:30SPEAKER_05: And rightly so.
- 51:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think so too.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: Just uh I didn't, you know, I think uh just in honor of Phil.
- 51:35SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 51:36SPEAKER_05: You know, Phil never said much, so we're not gonna say much.
- 51:40SPEAKER_08: There you go.
- 51:40SPEAKER_08: You know, there you go.
- 51:41SPEAKER_08: Uh we'll go back to our regular scheduled program next week.
- 51:45SPEAKER_05: Our usual tomfoolery.
- 51:47SPEAKER_08: Our usual, yes.
- 51:48SPEAKER_08: So all right.
- 51:49SPEAKER_08: Uh until then, um, I'm O'Brien.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: I'm still Doug.
