- 0:00You're welcome. We're here.
- 0:06In the final part of second Samuel.
- 0:08But if chapter 6 of second Samuel, we've been in this
- 0:11chapter for three weeks in a row, including this week.
- 0:16And so meet me in second Samuel, chapter 6 in your Bibles, And
- 0:20where we will. Where we will start.
- 0:24As in verse 16, second Samuel, chapter 6, verse 16.
- 0:30And as you know, we've been doing this lately and it's been
- 0:32edifying. I hope it's been a defying to
- 0:34me. Want to read this section.
- 0:36You're going to follow with me. And once I conclude, you will
- 0:40raise your hand and make some observations that you think are
- 0:44important with the questions, the reflective questions that
- 0:48help us in any context to have a deeper understanding of the word
- 0:51of God. Are you with me?
- 0:536:13. Excuse me.
- 0:56Verse 16. We read here as the Ark of the
- 1:01Lord came into the city of David Michal.
- 1:05The daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw King,
- 1:08David, leaping and dancing before the Lord, and she
- 1:13despised him in her heart and they brought in the ark of the
- 1:17Lord and set it in its place. Inside the tent that David had
- 1:21pitched for it, and David offered, burnt offerings and
- 1:26peace offerings before the Lord. And when David had finished,
- 1:30offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings.
- 1:33He blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts and
- 1:37distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of
- 1:40Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of meat
- 1:45and a cake of raisins to each one.
- 1:48Then all the people departed each to his house and David
- 1:52returned to bless his household. But Michal the daughter of Saul
- 1:57came out to meet David and said How the king of Israel honored
- 2:01himself today uncovering himself today before the eyes of his
- 2:05servants female service. As one of the vulgar velos,
- 2:11shamelessly uncovers himself, and David said to me Hall, it
- 2:15was before the Lord who chose me above your father and above all
- 2:20his house to appoint me as Prince over Israel.
- 2:23The people of the Lord and I will celebrate before the Lord,
- 2:28I will make myself yet more contemptible than this.
- 2:31And I will be a based in your eyes, but by the female Servants
- 2:35of whom you have spoken by them, I shall be held in honor.
- 2:40Anyhow the daughter of Saul had no child to the day of her
- 2:45death. Lord, we ask that you open our
- 2:48eyes to this text help us sharpen.
- 2:51One another help us leave here with our our affections warmed
- 2:55in our hearts, enlarged to love you.
- 2:58The way you deserve in Jesus name we pray.
- 3:01Amen. Any observations, interesting
- 3:05conclusion to this story. Anything that sticks out to you,
- 3:08anything that you think is valuable in terms of or maybe
- 3:10even a question that maybe might answer later on.
- 3:14Yes. Yeah, the macaws resentment
- 3:18jealousy, that seems to stand out from this section of
- 3:21scripture and has a lot to tell us.
- 3:24Yes, anything else. Yes.
- 3:44Mmm. She's it, could it be?
- 4:06What brother gorky's is saying? Because could it be that the
- 4:09verbalization of her resentment, it's due to the fact that she is
- 4:13just one of many wives and all these other wives, as we read in
- 4:16the past have had children. But he, or she is not given
- 4:19children, perhaps, maybe David is withholding children from
- 4:24her, that's a possible interpretation.
- 4:26What would Eat a reason for David not to have children with
- 4:30McHale any idea. She is the what?
- 4:39Yeah, so saw gave her to David as a wife, which means what
- 4:47Succession line. So if she has a child with me,
- 4:50Hal then that can potentially cause issues in the future of
- 4:54their being division within the kingdom, because we saw what
- 4:58happened with ishka Seth, right? So, maybe David is thinking
- 5:01strategically, as cruel as it is to say, I'm not going to give
- 5:03her my children because then we can have issues going down the
- 5:07line where her children can say. Well, we come from Saul and Saul
- 5:10is the one who deserves the throne and there can be some the
- 5:13conceived, be some problems in the future.
- 5:15That could be a possible interpretation.
- 5:17Anything else? Yes.
- 5:33So that last first a majority would say this is God's judgment
- 5:38and divine intervention. Some would say this is David
- 5:40actually pulling back from her. So there's debate around that
- 5:44but the popular vote is that it was the Lord who had closed her
- 5:48womb though. It doesn't explicitly say that
- 5:50but that's a good observation as well.
- 5:52Yes, very good. Isn't that interesting?
- 6:00Why is she at home? When the entire nation is out at
- 6:05the parade? The national prayed for the
- 6:07presence of God coming into the political capital of Israel.
- 6:10That's a very good observation. Yes.
- 6:27Very good observation, David confess, and there's a
- 6:30repetition of David doing what he was doing before the Lord.
- 6:35God knew that David knew that people with discernment would
- 6:38have known that, but people who lack spiritual discernment.
- 6:42Like, his wife could not perceive that and then because
- 6:45of that had to judge of ulterior motives, right?
- 6:48Yes, King. And then Tim god-king.
- 6:59Yes. Amen.
- 7:15We're going to talk about dancing tonight.
- 7:17So I'm glad you brought that up, he has to him.
- 7:44Yeah. So you kind of say what brother
- 8:15Giza saying, there's like there's deeper issues here and
- 8:17this is just the fruit of a root issue of.
- 8:20Maybe remember what happened to me, Hal after David was exiled,
- 8:24did she end up getting married to somebody else?
- 8:26And what did David do when he became a ruler?
- 8:30You're my wife come here and so she removed him, removed her
- 8:35from her other husband, right? Could that play into it?
- 8:38I mean these are great observation.
- 8:40Someone had their hand up here. Yes.
- 8:47Yes. Yes, absolutely.
- 8:50So it makes you wonder, where is this Outburst coming from?
- 8:54Is it is it surface level? Or is there a deeper thinking
- 8:57here, maybe a couple more and then we'll move on?
- 9:00It's for the sake of time. Yes.
- 9:13So, he fed the entire nation. He fed the entire nation, which
- 9:18is pretty significant. Who did we relate David to, in
- 9:21our last study Jesus? Yes.
- 9:24But who specifically in light of Jesus?
- 9:27But a specific Ministry of Jesus Melchizedek, right?
- 9:31The priesthood of Melchizedek and we went back to Genesis to
- 9:34show, how Melchizedek was the king of Salem where Salem
- 9:39Jerusalem. Right.
- 9:40Here's David, who is acting As a priest and King of the newly
- 9:45established capital of Israel Jerusalem.
- 9:47But do you remember what else Melchizedek did to Abraham?
- 9:53Did he give him something? He gave Abraham Bread and Wine
- 9:58and then he blessed Abraham and we kind of see a parallel
- 10:02activity here, right? We see David also blessing the
- 10:05nation and giving them food to eat.
- 10:08So it's very it's a very strong mirroring of what Melchizedek
- 10:13did and we're given little information about him, so it's a
- 10:15very strong strong connection, okay?
- 10:17Maybe one more and then we'll move on here.
- 10:20Yes. Yeah.
- 10:27So he's on his way to bless his household and me how comes out
- 10:30to meet him and you can tell she was not very supportive.
- 10:35We're going to find out why. But here's what's happening in
- 10:37our text tonight. The mission of the Ark of the
- 10:40Covenant coming into its rightful place has now reached
- 10:44is its long-awaited finale, and we have hopefully learned a lot
- 10:49of things up to this point. This one chapter, some things
- 10:52were reminders for us. Other things were fresh
- 10:55practical and prophetic insight. But if there is one theme among
- 10:59many that really connects to our text from verse one down to the
- 11:05last verse, I believe it's not difficult to see that the
- 11:09subject matter of worship is very dominant worship
- 11:13appropriate. Worship inappropriate, worship,
- 11:16what pleases God, what doesn't please God and that theme is
- 11:19going to continue to weave itself in the final moments of
- 11:24this snapshot of David's life and Ministry.
- 11:27Worship worship. And when you see the stacks, and
- 11:32you consider the, the series of events, very in a very short
- 11:36period of time, we see David worshipping and the larger
- 11:39context you can say with the people of God, with the
- 11:41congregation of God. And when we see that his worship
- 11:44will only continue to smaller spheres, more intimate spheres
- 11:48in his life which is important because that's a, that's a
- 11:51principle. What true worship is.
- 11:54So as you and I come to these last versus, we're going to see
- 11:56that this is not an exhaustive study about what worship is.
- 12:00But it's an Horton element to what worship is.
- 12:03It's a, it's an instructional section of scripture one.
- 12:07That provides illustration an example because you and I have
- 12:11been created in the image of God as the Pinnacle of God's
- 12:14creation to do one specific thing and that's to worship.
- 12:19We've been created to worship and when we step outside of that
- 12:23order things go out of order in our lives.
- 12:25And so we have this High called this primary call to do what to
- 12:31and accurately who God is what he's done to affirm that truth
- 12:35with adoration within us. And then from that place
- 12:38outwardly through various means of expression to a to honor God
- 12:42and to show him through worship that we do in fact, believe who
- 12:47he is and a tribute to him all the glory that he deserves.
- 12:53So let's look at these verses and consider some instructions.
- 12:56Some ingredients about worship, true worship false worship,
- 13:00controversial, aspects of worship.
- 13:03Verse 16 as the Ark of the Lord came into the city of David
- 13:06Michal, the daughter of Saul looked out of the window and saw
- 13:09David King, David, leaping and dancing before the Lord and she
- 13:13despised him in her heart. I wonder what that look like.
- 13:18King David on the streets of Jerusalem, and leaping, and
- 13:21dancing and twirling for the glory of God.
- 13:26And that Portrait of a man doing such a thing has been a subject
- 13:33of much debate and people have strong feelings on either side
- 13:38of what David is doing here. So you have some people who will
- 13:42say the idea of dancing. As act of worship, is totally
- 13:51unrelated to the New Covenant Church just as much as offering
- 13:54animal sacrifices is. And so the argument goes that
- 13:58Dancing for the Lord and unto the Lord is in the same category
- 14:02of cessation as giving Bulls on an altar and burning it up in
- 14:08the name of praise and adoration Thanksgiving or a guilt
- 14:10offering. Interesting.
- 14:12Then you have others on the opposite end of the spectrum who
- 14:14will say No? In fact, if what David is doing
- 14:18here, offers anything is the possibility of how the whole man
- 14:23can be engaged in loving God and adoring God, right?
- 14:28So now Not just the spirit, not just the soul, but now, my body
- 14:33can exhibit Glory unto God. Right?
- 14:38And so, this side would say, not only should it not be
- 14:42discouraged, it should be permitted, it should be
- 14:45permitted and then they would go further from there and say to
- 14:51despise such a thing or look down, or to limit or to cancel
- 14:56that possibility wouldn't cure. The same condemnation that Mahal
- 15:00had here when she looked down on David for doing the very same
- 15:04thing, that people say we can't do.
- 15:08And so we have to come here and ask.
- 15:10What does the scripture say about this?
- 15:13What does the totality of God's word have to say about this?
- 15:15Amy seems trivial seems silly. It's like, really, we're going
- 15:18to spend a few minutes to talk about what they're dancing unto.
- 15:20The Lord is something that relates to us as Christians, but
- 15:24here's the thing, if I'm a serious worshiper, then I want
- 15:27to have Clarity on all aspects of worship.
- 15:30I don't want to be, I don't have one dark area in my life.
- 15:32I don't want to just be able to have a debatable conversation.
- 15:36I want to know if this is something that pleases God.
- 15:41And so when you come to a verse like this I want you to make
- 15:44sure because there are a lot of things in the scriptures that
- 15:46are not as didactic. Meaning, they're not, they're
- 15:49not as clear as do this. Don't do this, they're not as
- 15:52black and white, and if we're not careful, we can allow our
- 15:55convictions to be rooted in culture and not the Bible. so
- 16:00culturally, we interpret things, instead of letting the Bible
- 16:03interpret things because if I were to present this question in
- 16:06a church in the Caribbeans, I would get a totally different
- 16:10reaction than if I would teach a Bible study about this in the
- 16:13church, I don't know. In the Netherlands.
- 16:15For example, I don't know. Or here in America.
- 16:19I won't pick on any other Nation.
- 16:21So when you come to a verse like this and when you understand the
- 16:24possibility of dancing unto the Lord, Where do we go with that?
- 16:31Some would say the conversation can go further than this.
- 16:35Whatever is in a narrative. Does not mean it is normative.
- 16:40You understand the argument there, just because something is
- 16:43in a story in the Bible does not mean that it is a code of
- 16:48conduct that we must apply in our context.
- 16:52And I think that's important in different ways of interpreting.
- 16:55It's very dangerous to look at a narrative and say this is
- 16:59normative because a lot of people take narratives and make
- 17:02concrete doctrines out of things that are not as clear as we
- 17:06would like them to be. So just because it's recorded,
- 17:09does it mean that? Are we are called to certain
- 17:12behaviors or practices. I understand that, and I agree
- 17:15with that. But is this the only place where
- 17:17we see dancing unto the Lord in the Bible?
- 17:20Okay, tell me of another place. Okay, Psalm Thirty, you have the
- 17:26exact reference You turned my mourning into what dancing?
- 17:33Psalm 149. Verse 3, what is Psalm 149 verse
- 17:383, say, let them Praise His Name.
- 17:42With what? What do you think, dancing,
- 17:46making Melody to him with tambourine and liar, okay?
- 17:50You just have to go to the next chapter of Psalm to see verse 4
- 17:54and Psalm 150, praise him with tambourine.
- 17:58And what dance, praise him with strings and pipe.
- 18:04I'll tell you how some people interpret, those verses they
- 18:06don't mind the tambourines, they don't mind the Liars, they don't
- 18:09mind the strings, they don't mind the pipe, but keep your
- 18:13dancing shoes at home. You have something else.
- 18:18That was it, right? Who else danced in the Old
- 18:21Testament other than David? Think back to our study in the
- 18:25book of Exodus Miriam, did she not dance and lead the woman in
- 18:29procession of dancing? so we have references that are
- 18:34not within the realm of narrative only, We have
- 18:38different. instances of the mention of dancing as God,
- 18:43glorifying worship. Here's the thing.
- 18:45Actually, if you really pay attention to the Bible, you will
- 18:48see that there are many, many instances, many pictures and
- 18:53various physical postures as articulations of Honor unto God
- 18:59okay. Its more common than you think.
- 19:02So you read the early chapters of the Book of Revelation.
- 19:04What do you find? You find these creatures in
- 19:06heaven and these 24 Elders that frequently did what they fell on
- 19:11their faces before God. That's that's a physical act
- 19:16communicating something from the heart that God never condemned.
- 19:21You have different moments where men of God like Moses men of God
- 19:24like Nehemiah Samuel different different men who bow down
- 19:29before their maker? As a symbol of reverence unto
- 19:35God sprinkled throughout the Psalms, and even different
- 19:38narratives, you have even the call to lift up your hands to
- 19:44the Lord. Lifting up your hands to the
- 19:47Lord, as it is, mingled with either intercession or singing
- 19:52to visualize my desperation and my surrender unto God.
- 19:58So you see different positions here, different postures, that
- 20:03engage in exhibit. The body that the Bible speaks
- 20:07about frequently And I know what you might be thinking, listen,
- 20:11brother. Lifting hands.
- 20:13I'm okay with bowing down. You're pushing it dancing.
- 20:20I don't know about dancing. And I get it but let me say
- 20:24this. It's very difficult. to convey
- 20:30from the Bible and make a Biblical case, pay attention or
- 20:32about to say that stiff stoic statue like Worship is the
- 20:43strict standard of how we most glorify God.
- 20:48And offering our adoration before him.
- 20:52Like the burden of proof is on you to prove that because there
- 20:56is a lot to say that sometimes the body is engaged in worship
- 21:00and it is the Overflow of the heart.
- 21:05I know again. What you may be thinking?
- 21:07So the common genuine concern is where do you draw the line?
- 21:14Then where do you draw the line of our motions cannot be
- 21:20distracting can and not actually do the opposite of what we would
- 21:25want to happen. And remember, I'm not speaking
- 21:27about, let me clarify. I'm not speaking about what you
- 21:29do in your bedroom in your worship.
- 21:30To God, you can do whatever you want there.
- 21:31I mean, I whatever you want but you can do a lot.
- 21:34In your room by yourself in the presence of God that you can't
- 21:38do in a setting like this. And that is not, that is not my
- 21:42rule, that's the Bible's rules. There are instructions of how
- 21:46you and I come together to worship God that all kind of
- 21:51actions and activities must submit to in order to know the
- 21:55most profitable and edifying experience of worship that we
- 21:58can have with one another and more importantly before the
- 22:01Lord. So instead of trying to nitpick
- 22:04Every single thing is this, right?
- 22:06Is this the right? Is that right?
- 22:07Is that right? Is that too far?
- 22:08As that not enough meat, we meet me in a book in the New
- 22:12Testament about worship, at least this chapter is about
- 22:16instructions of corporate worship.
- 22:18Some of you are turning already, you know, where I'm going?
- 22:20Who knows where I'm going. If you're just getting ready.
- 22:23First Corinthians chapter 14, First Corinthians chapter 14 and
- 22:29meet me in verse 26 because I think this will help this will
- 22:33help Name our convictions about different expressions of
- 22:39worship. First Corinthians Chapter 14.
- 22:43Verse 26. Here's what Paul is saying to
- 22:45the New Testament Church, not just to the church in Corinth
- 22:49but to all the churches as he says later on in this chapter he
- 22:52says, what then Brothers, when you come together, each one has
- 22:57a him, a lesson, are Revelation a tongue or an interpretation.
- 23:02Let all things be done. Done for building up.
- 23:09Different regulations for how we worship God in a congregation
- 23:15then when you're alone consecrated by yourself.
- 23:21And the rule is very clear, right?
- 23:24There is a distinction to be made and Paul knew such a
- 23:28distinction because in this in this actual context, he is
- 23:31teaching about tongues. That's another Bible study for
- 23:33another time, but he's teaching about tongues and which she says
- 23:37earlier, that that practice edifies yourself more than
- 23:42anybody else. And if it's not carefully done
- 23:45within the Gathering of the Brethren, it can have the
- 23:49opposite effect. And so in order to harness this
- 23:53and to make the most of this, what you do in private is not
- 23:56going to be the same of what you do in public.
- 24:00And so we can apply any kind of practice to the same kind of
- 24:04rule that we see here. And here's the first rule, my
- 24:07active presence in a meeting like this is completely outward
- 24:12focused. Primarily.
- 24:16Yes, I am coming to worship God but very close to that just like
- 24:19the first and second greatest commandment.
- 24:23I am here to build up edify spur on my brothers and sisters in
- 24:28Christ. I do not come in a place like
- 24:31this with the focus on me. I do not come in a place like
- 24:35this to seek attention and gratification and blessing for
- 24:39me. That's what Paul is saying.
- 24:41When you come to church, you're coming to offer something.
- 24:45When you come to the meeting, you have your brothers and
- 24:48sisters in mind and you want to know how can I build them up?
- 24:53And that motive will really help dictate behavior and action, and
- 24:59expression. And so, here's the thing.
- 25:02Your gifts, my gifts My Worship, your worship are meant to
- 25:05actually bless others. And the moment that my motive is
- 25:10centered around me, and me being blessed me being edified or me,
- 25:14receiving attention me, receiving Glory me receiving
- 25:17praise. That's where you have to
- 25:19reconsider what you're doing. Because what you have is people
- 25:22saying this, well it's blessing me and I'm doing it unto God.
- 25:27So what really matters is what God sees and what God wants,
- 25:32doesn't matter what this person thinks, it doesn't matter what
- 25:34that person thinks. And Paul knew that when he was
- 25:36teaching this when he was specifically talking about the
- 25:38gift of tongues. So you know what?
- 25:40He says, go to verse 17 early on, look what he says.
- 25:46Speaking about tongues, remember he says, I'm tongues was a form
- 25:49of worship. Praise prayer for you maybe
- 25:53giving, thanks, well enough, but the other person is not being
- 25:57built up. Listen as much as you're being
- 26:01blessed with what you're doing between you and God in this
- 26:05context. If you're not building others
- 26:07up, then that doesn't make what you're doing legitimate no
- 26:10matter how spiritual, maybe, no matter how much of a blessing,
- 26:14it is to you saying, no, you have to consider others around
- 26:18you. As you are worshipping God
- 26:19because you're not just doing this is not an individual thing.
- 26:22That's not you and God time. That's what you do at home.
- 26:25This is us and God time big difference.
- 26:29And the second rule here is very close to the first one.
- 26:32You have to come down to verse 40 of the same chapter to see
- 26:35it, really sums up everything later on, Paul says, in verse
- 26:3940, but all things, all things should be done decently and in
- 26:44order decently and in order, no matter what your spiritual gift
- 26:48is, no matter how much a blesses you, no matter how much you
- 26:51might think, it might bless others you and I do not have the
- 26:54right to exercise or manifest, anything.
- 26:57Remember, this is all things. In a way that would be
- 27:00destructive in a way that might be confusing in a way that might
- 27:05be distracting. The moment what we're doing is
- 27:09muddied and brings about things that do not bless is a moment,
- 27:15but we have to stop no matter how much you ready for this.
- 27:18You think you are being led by the spirit to do so, I remember
- 27:23I met one guy never met him after that, it was literally for
- 27:25a few moments, I was at a conference and we bumped into
- 27:27each other. So we just got talking while
- 27:29we're walking to our destination and he told me about his church
- 27:32and he told me how Spirit-filled his congregation was and I guess
- 27:35he wanted to explain how Spirit-filled his congregation
- 27:38was. So he told me, he says, art, our
- 27:40congregation is so sensitive to the holy spirit that if the Lord
- 27:43were the tell somebody during a meeting to go and paint the wall
- 27:46to go paint the wall. That's really interesting.
- 27:51I think Paul would have something to say about that.
- 27:56And so, you have to understand that a lot of Liberty has
- 27:59license behind being led by the spirit. but you know what, the
- 28:05most spiritual thing to do is do things decently and in order
- 28:10that's, Holy, Spirit, lead, when there's chaos, if people are
- 28:15jumping from one Pew, to the next, if people are running
- 28:17around the service and throwing things around, and it's not
- 28:19decent or an order, Then it's disqualified.
- 28:24It's disqualified. So keep that in mind when we
- 28:26understand what David is doing here as well, because we have to
- 28:30understand that There are rules to our worship.
- 28:34Our Praise there are boundaries, there are limitations.
- 28:40But at the same time, if there's anything that we can take out of
- 28:42David's story here, is that his enthusiasm offers us the
- 28:48inspiration that in different occasions and different contexts
- 28:53and different moments will inspire different responses.
- 28:57What? This will inspire different
- 28:59reactions to what God has done is doing?
- 29:03So there are moments, right? Because David is not in a church
- 29:07with pews here, he's on the streets, he's in a procession,
- 29:10the whole nation is there. There is a there is a huge
- 29:13parade with instruments and Loud song taking place.
- 29:17And so it was appropriate in this context for him to leap and
- 29:21to do whatever he was doing spiraling around.
- 29:25We just overflowing with joy with Knowledge of the presence
- 29:28of God being in close proximity, but it is no less of worship
- 29:31that in some settings that this place be just completely silent.
- 29:37As we reflect on something solemn, something good
- 29:41something. Holy I can't help.
- 29:42But think of our Friday night services during Easter, it's a
- 29:47very silent night. It's very quiet night because
- 29:49reflecting about what our sin has done.
- 29:52What it costs, the son of God, I don't think it would be to to
- 29:57appropriate a setting like that to be leaping and jumping around
- 30:01and clapping cymbals together. But then there are other moments
- 30:05were God can intervene and interject with such a
- 30:10supernatural sense of his glory and power, he can even perform a
- 30:13miracle where it would be. I would say appropriate that out
- 30:17of just sheer excitement to jump up and down.
- 30:21Look what God is doing in our midst.
- 30:23Look at the look at the things that he is.
- 30:25He Forming right before our eyes and it would, in fact, be
- 30:29inappropriate to do anything less.
- 30:34And so it's not as black and white, right?
- 30:37It's not, it's not as do this, don't do this.
- 30:39I think, as long as we take Paul's instructions and apply
- 30:42them to our context and to our culture's, then we are the
- 30:47safest, then we are the safest. And if we're honest with this
- 30:51tax, we must say that. There are physical acts of
- 30:56worship that are indeed permitted, not mandated, but
- 30:59permitted, as long as they build others up, as long as they are
- 31:03done decently. And in order, whatever we do may
- 31:06be done with a measure of wisdom and with the law of love, so
- 31:10that it can be a blessing, not just to God.
- 31:12But to those that God has called us to respect and edify the same
- 31:15time. And some might say, well, maybe
- 31:18David broke that rule because of the reaction of his wife and
- 31:22we'll get to that in a moment. But I don't think to be honest,
- 31:26this is just a personal observation.
- 31:28I don't think the issue. In our context and our culture
- 31:33is too much enthusiasm. Would you agree with that?
- 31:39I don't think it's too much enthusiasm.
- 31:40I think there's a great lack of it.
- 31:43You can put a Christian in almost any other setting, and
- 31:46they can find a way to be very, very passionate, and not very
- 31:50embarrassed to show their passion.
- 31:52But for some reason, when you put them in a church service,
- 31:56they're there as though Jesus didn't rise from the dead and
- 31:58it's like a funeral every week. I don't understand that.
- 32:03I don't get it. That's just that's just me
- 32:05personally. I think some Christians I love
- 32:07them. They're going to make heaven but
- 32:08they might be very uncomfortable in heaven.
- 32:11Because it's going to be very loud.
- 32:14It's gonna be a lot of singing. You're going to see a lot of
- 32:16people creatures even bowing down before God.
- 32:20Raising their voices to God. And sometimes.
- 32:23Well, that's distracting. Well, not if it's done for the
- 32:25glory of God, not if it's authentic, none of its real,
- 32:29not. If it's led by the spirit, not
- 32:30of it is done with the, the order that Paul calls for, if
- 32:34anything it can demonstrate greater glory to God.
- 32:38So, those are just my two cents in light of the word.
- 32:40So, let's come back to this text, right?
- 32:42Let's scroll down to verse 18. And when David had finished,
- 32:47offering the burnt offerings and the peace offerings.
- 32:49He blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts and
- 32:53distributed among all the people, the whole multitude of
- 32:55Israel, both men and women, a cake of bread, a portion of me
- 32:58and a cake of raisins to each one.
- 33:00Then all the people departed each to his house.
- 33:03So here's what's amazing. We can make the mistake of
- 33:06measuring somebody's worship. Being real and sincere solely
- 33:10upon the excitement. And the intensity of their
- 33:13praise that they display in a service or an event.
- 33:16Enthusiasm is not. The be-all and end-all.
- 33:21It's not it's a part of it and there should be enthusiasm in
- 33:28our singing in are interceding. The Bible's clear about that,
- 33:32but David is going to show that worship goes beyond that sphere
- 33:35of life, goes beyond the meeting.
- 33:38Place goes beyond the segment of time.
- 33:40During the week, that is designated for that focus.
- 33:43And the way he's going to show it here is that as a worshipper
- 33:48His his love for God. His acknowledgment of God is
- 33:53going to spill over in the way he treats other people.
- 33:57And the way he treats other people, as a rule, he felt the
- 34:00great responsibility and need to serve them in a very practical
- 34:05way to extend Grace to extend help to extend Mercy with a
- 34:10recognition of a need that's that's there and he want to meet
- 34:15that need. That's how we came out of the
- 34:17worship service, so to speak. So he who is not like many who
- 34:22failed to make a connection between a vertical adoration and
- 34:26a horizontal awareness. Some people make that disconnect
- 34:30there one thing vertically but horizontally, they're like a
- 34:33completely different person and that, that doesn't make sense in
- 34:36light of how the Bible wants to frame our worship.
- 34:40There should be if anything this channel between us and God that
- 34:44spills over and the way we minister to others.
- 34:47And here's what's happening, you have people who knows how far
- 34:50they came to meet David and the Ark into Jerusalem.
- 34:53Who knows what resources they set up.
- 34:55Our who knows what kind of time they had to.
- 34:57They had Set apart in order to come to this event and
- 35:00acknowledge God. And David realized these people
- 35:02have to go home. They have a long journey home,
- 35:04they have a trip to make and your these little kids and he's
- 35:07people have to spend so much money that the sit in traffic
- 35:10all these things. And so he felt the need with the
- 35:12resources and the power that he had to be able to nourish them
- 35:15and bless them and Supply whatever they needed.
- 35:18And so when I look at a verse I guess I realized that the the
- 35:22sequence suggest this is what true worship looks like.
- 35:28This is what true worship looks like in.
- 35:30A reminds me of a text. And first, John meet me in first
- 35:33John quickly, in chapter three. David is Young and he David is
- 35:42in his 30s here and he is already showing evidence of
- 35:45mindfulness and tenderness for others, proving that his heart
- 35:51was surely moved and influenced by serious revelation of the
- 35:55love of God. First, John three sixteen.
- 35:57Not John 3:16 first, John 3:16. By this, we know love that he
- 36:03laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for
- 36:08the brothers. Okay?
- 36:11When you hear, if you grew up in the church, you've heard this.
- 36:13When you hear the expression, the christ-centered Christ
- 36:17focused expression, laying our lives down, four brothers,
- 36:22laying our lives down for one another.
- 36:24What's the first thing that comes to mind?
- 36:27Be honest, what comes to mind? Can I tell you what comes to
- 36:32mind? A heroic Act of martyrdom?
- 36:36That's what comes to mind. The first thing that comes to
- 36:37mind is laying your life down, because, I mean, it's related to
- 36:41Jesus, he laid down his life for us, we ought to lay down our
- 36:45lives for the brothers, so, that, if the opportunity should
- 36:48arise, where I must give up my life in order to spare the life
- 36:53of a brother, I should do it. I think that's part of it.
- 36:58I don't even think that's necessarily what John is
- 37:00implying in this teaching. Laying your life down.
- 37:05For the brothers, is clarified, in the next verse, look at verse
- 37:0817. But if anyone has the world's
- 37:12goods and sees his brother in need yet, closes his heart
- 37:16against them. How does God's love abide in
- 37:19him? Do you see the relationship
- 37:21here? Verse 17, a major aspect of what
- 37:25it means to lay down my life. For my brother is not so much
- 37:30about sacrificial dying. It's more about sacrificial
- 37:36living. I think the latter is harder
- 37:41than the former because the latter sacrificial living to the
- 37:47flesh is a slow death, it's a slow death.
- 37:52You're telling me if putting the interests of others above mine,
- 37:55you're telling me to lay aside, my desires and to steam others
- 37:58more important as me. That's a slow torturous death to
- 38:03the flesh. Some would prefer they just be a
- 38:07martyr and get it all over with, and I want to get out of this
- 38:09world anyway. But when I look at a text like
- 38:13this, I understand that laying down our lives.
- 38:16For others means that I have a consideration for consideration
- 38:20for and a contribution to the interest of others even at the
- 38:25cost of my own. We need the holy spirit's help.
- 38:30We need the holy spirit's help to live this way because if I
- 38:33see a brother if I see a sister and there's a need in their life
- 38:37and my heart reaction is to be close to them to ignore it and
- 38:42neglected to imagine it's not there.
- 38:44Then then John says how can you claim that God's love is alive
- 38:48in you? The evidence that God's love it
- 38:50is alive in you, is that when you see that need, when you see
- 38:53that request, and when you see the opportunity, your heart
- 38:56opens up. It says I'm willing to do what I
- 38:59need to do. And so we see that in David's
- 39:03life to some degree, he's aware he sees it.
- 39:07He's not just caught up in this personal experience with God.
- 39:10It translate into the way he looked at people and his heart
- 39:13opened up towards them. So true worship a true living
- 39:17pure sacrifice unto God is able to act in such a way but it goes
- 39:22beyond that go back to our main text before we go there, where
- 39:25does he go next? After he serves the nation.
- 39:28Where did he go next? He goes home.
- 39:32So David went from to from church, right?
- 39:36The house of God, the big conference event and from there
- 39:41he served the people came a little bit more to Earth and he
- 39:43serve the people. And now in verse 20, we read in
- 39:46the first few words, and David returned to bless his household
- 39:52and David returned to bless his household.
- 39:59I believe that the home is the highest altar of worship.
- 40:05I believe it is the primary place that God seeks incense
- 40:09from He demonstrates what a true worshiper.
- 40:13Looks like when we are turned, when we returns home to bless
- 40:17his home proving that he didn't leave his faith at the event,
- 40:21but he brought it to his day-to-day life, he brought it
- 40:24home. It breaks my heart because I
- 40:28know that it is frequently the case where people leave that
- 40:33Faith, leave that acknowledgement of God, right at
- 40:36the door, no matter what they heard and sang about.
- 40:40It's a sad. Commentary on many people's
- 40:42lives. We see here that this man
- 40:47realized that what happened there has to happen in my house.
- 40:52It will look different, but it will not be inconsistent.
- 40:56And Paul, the Apostle seems to indicate even to us in the New
- 41:00Covenant. That if we are to demonstrate
- 41:03our godliness primarily in any place, it has to be within the
- 41:09confines of our home with our family.
- 41:12Yes, with your parents, with your siblings with your spouse.
- 41:18Household godliness. I want to show you where I get
- 41:22that idea from it's an obscure passage of scripture that we
- 41:25seem to ignore it's about widows for those who are there.
- 41:29Maybe a year and a half ago. We look through this and First
- 41:31Timothy and chapter 5 but I want you to see this because in this
- 41:36one instruction, I think you have a principal for Universal
- 41:39godliness to be applied in all aspects of Our Lives. 1st
- 41:45Timothy 5 4. Look at Paul says, but if a
- 41:52widow has children or grandchildren, let them first
- 41:57learn to show, godliness to their own household.
- 42:02Do you see that? And to make some return to their
- 42:06parents? For this is pleasing in the
- 42:08sight of God. What's pleasing in the sight of
- 42:10God, that you would first learn to show godliness home
- 42:19Unfortunately, I for some reason, it seems to be our
- 42:24reflex to primarily Shore godliness in a setting like this
- 42:28and to even extend the fruit of the spirit to unbelieving
- 42:32co-workers or friends. But when it comes to our
- 42:36husband, our wives, our children, our brothers in the
- 42:39flesh, our sisters and blood, we seem to reserve those fruits And
- 42:46we seem to extend other things. We seem to extend more fruit of
- 42:50the flesh than anything else. I don't know why that is.
- 42:54But it's often the case. And Paul says, learn first to
- 42:58show godliness at home, this is really pleasing in the sight of
- 43:01God. In fact, he goes on to say that.
- 43:04If you don't know how to do that then it really disqualifies your
- 43:09demonstration of spirituality in any other context.
- 43:12Remember what he says later on that if someone does not know
- 43:14how to provide for his own relatives, he's worse than an
- 43:16unbeliever and has denied the faith consider that let's
- 43:21consider the magnitude of that if you fail to give the
- 43:26appropriate recognition, And fulfill your responsibilities.
- 43:32As a brother or sister, or child, or parent in humanity,
- 43:36then your faith is null. and no matter what you do, and I think
- 43:44that, Paul here provides another insight.
- 43:49What happens among relatives affects the health of the
- 43:53church? In many context, what happens in
- 43:58the home, has a connection to the strength of the church.
- 44:04Go to verse 16 to prove it. If any believing woman has
- 44:09relatives, who are widows, let her care for them, let the
- 44:13church not be burdened. So that it may care for those
- 44:18who are truly widows. Don't burden the church, what is
- 44:26he applying their? What's that Vernon's financial
- 44:27burden? Which tells me another thing?
- 44:30Listen, hey, as Christians, it doesn't mean that we just give
- 44:33anything to anybody who asks, never forget that, this is not
- 44:36the point of the Bible study, just because you're a Christian,
- 44:38just because your call to generosity and sacrificial
- 44:40living, the Bible doesn't want you to blindly, extend.
- 44:44Help to anybody who asks for help.
- 44:46I know that seems controversial read 1st, Timothy 5 and you'll
- 44:49get what I'm saying. There's actually Criterion,
- 44:52there's actually a list of requirements in many settings
- 44:56before assistance is made known. I think there are a lot of
- 45:00Christians who are not wise in this area and they get hurt more
- 45:04than blessed by just blindly helping people.
- 45:07If you have more questions about that, see me after the Bible
- 45:09study, but notice what he says here, the family is in
- 45:14partnership with the church. Hey, homes those in this place
- 45:20where you have Believers within the household, you have a job to
- 45:23do that. The church is not supposed to
- 45:25do, the church is not the primary reactor to everything.
- 45:29They're not that they are not the 911 to all problems homes.
- 45:32You have a job to do. Fathers.
- 45:35You have a job do Mother's you. Siblings have a job to do.
- 45:38If you have a widow in your home you got to take care of that
- 45:41before we do. And this burden here specific is
- 45:44speaking about financial burden, right?
- 45:47But it applies across the board, consider the cycle that God has
- 45:51established that when you and I leave this place just like David
- 45:54left that event. We are to go and and be fueled
- 45:58to bless our homes even more, right?
- 46:00But just like what Paul is explaining here, what happens in
- 46:03the home, can either be a burden to the church or blessing to the
- 46:07church? And so this cycle must be
- 46:10honored must be recognized. Those are not two separate
- 46:13entities. This Ministries built upon the
- 46:15foundation of Godly homes, and if the homes are struggling, if
- 46:19marriages are struggling this ministry, will struggle And I
- 46:24think that's important for us to understand to because the church
- 46:26is not the savior of families. Either it's not the youth group
- 46:31that we're planning to have is not going to save the you that
- 46:33might help. It might supplement, but what
- 46:35goes on at home is crucial and I know it's not as easy as what
- 46:42I'm presenting because there are nuances, right?
- 46:44There are complications. What if the spouse is not a
- 46:46Godly? What if the Omni only believer?
- 46:48I get it. That's where the church comes in
- 46:49now. So the church knows when to come
- 46:52in the church know I want to be the primary help and the church
- 46:55knows when to be the secondary help.
- 46:58And in David's case, it was not easy because we heard it, right?
- 47:00He's in a go home and he's Shiri, he's filled with joy.
- 47:04He's on a spiritual High, he's skipping and dancing home.
- 47:09Only to meet a wife. That's not exactly supportive.
- 47:15Right? So let's go back to that texts.
- 47:17Many of you mentioned an observed about me, house,
- 47:20behavior and words. Let's, let's try to understand
- 47:23why she's doing, what she's doing.
- 47:28First 20, David returned to bless his household but Michal
- 47:31the daughter of Saul came out to me.
- 47:33David pause what stands out to you from that one sentence or
- 47:36one phrase. I saw your mouth moving.
- 47:43Yes, very good. Do you notice how the Holy
- 47:45Spirit refers to Mahal? Is it, is it mija all the wife
- 47:50of David should be, shouldn't it?
- 47:57so when somebody finds a spouse, they should leave their father
- 48:01and mother That's some of the holy spirit.
- 48:03Says the holy spirit says Michal the daughter of Saul.
- 48:05Why do you think that is? Because she's going to look and
- 48:10sound a lot like Saul. And what we're about to read,
- 48:15she's going to resemble her father Saul and she is going to
- 48:19show a great lack of what David has and his heart towards God.
- 48:26So she Reigns on his parade, right?
- 48:28And she Reigns on David's, personal parade with sarcasm and
- 48:33slander. She makes allegations she makes
- 48:36accusations and so vicious and impatient was her confrontation
- 48:42that we David the same again to the front door.
- 48:44She sees him from the window presumably and she runs out of
- 48:48the front door to meet him as early as possible.
- 48:51Like she is foaming out of the mouth via manly upset and
- 48:56irritated about what she saw early on in that day.
- 48:59And I look at this and I think to myself, What's her criticism
- 49:05Justified? And the way to answer that is to
- 49:08look into biblically because the Temptation is to psychoanalyze.
- 49:11Why she's doing this. The Temptation is say, well, you
- 49:14know, she had a rough pass and she might have been treated this
- 49:17way. We're tempted to do that, but I
- 49:19want to stay within the bounds of scripture and I do a study on
- 49:22whom Michal was I'm not introduced Earth for the first
- 49:25time here. I know who she is, you know, who
- 49:28she is. So maybe who she is, is all that
- 49:32we need to understand for this kind of behavior and
- 49:35confrontation. So first thing she does write
- 49:38it. She says how the king of Israel
- 49:40honored himself honored himself today.
- 49:43She's being sarcastic, uncovering himself today, before
- 49:47the eyes of this of his servants female servants, question, who
- 49:51here believes that David was half naked when he was dancing.
- 49:55because many people believe that many people have that depiction
- 49:57of David, Was David just shirtless and wearing Priestly,
- 50:05trousers is some belief. No, we learned that he was
- 50:10wearing a linen, ephod. And we learned that he was
- 50:13closed, just like the levitical priests were clothes.
- 50:17And so many people take what Mahal is saying and take it to
- 50:22heart. And literally and say, well, I
- 50:23can see why she's kind of upset because if my husband was
- 50:26dancing around barely clothed I would I would be up no matter
- 50:29what he's doing, right? Goes back to Pauls rules, it
- 50:32doesn't matter how sincere you are, you got to put on some
- 50:34clothes, right? But that's not what's happening
- 50:37here because we know that David was closed, just like the
- 50:40Levites were clothed. So why is she criticizing his
- 50:45articles of clothing? Think about it.
- 50:51What did he need to do in order to wear the linen ephod and to
- 50:55be recognized for ruining wearing the linen ephod very
- 51:01good. He had to remove his Royal
- 51:04attire. He had to remove that which
- 51:07distinguished him from the rest of the commoners.
- 51:12And that is what upset me, Hal. Humility was not a virtue to
- 51:17her. And she put a premium, she sure
- 51:21identity was caught up, just like her dad caught up and honor
- 51:28and high profile status and David in this, in this display
- 51:33of humility, says, I'm not the king of Israel.
- 51:36God is, here's his are coming to the throne.
- 51:40And so I will blend in with the rest of the nation and there's
- 51:44Michal In her a little Palace looking down with disgust.
- 51:50How could you make yourself so low in the eyes of men?
- 51:57Because that ultimately offended her to some degree.
- 52:02And so she looks at this and she realizes, I don't understand how
- 52:05you can do this, but it's more than that.
- 52:07It wasn't just his humility that she could understand.
- 52:10She could not register this, passionate display of worship So
- 52:16because we read it early on right and verse 16.
- 52:18That when she saw King, David leaping and dancing before the
- 52:21Lord, she despised him in her heart.
- 52:25This is like a deep content. This was like a bitterness and
- 52:29she looked at him dancing and leaping and she goes, that is so
- 52:35strange, that's actually ugly. For what reason?
- 52:44Was mija spiritual. Now, we can say no based on
- 52:49this. But how do you know she's not
- 52:50spiritual from our previous studies Was she a woman who had
- 52:54the sermon? Was she a woman who had genuine
- 52:57love for God. Think about think about how we
- 53:04have Clues throughout her life. That indicate that on a
- 53:08foundational level, she maybe even didn't know God, Yes.
- 53:22Kill me, she threatened me remember when the initial move
- 53:24of Saul came against David and he escapes and me how lies to
- 53:28her dad? Says look, I had I was left with
- 53:30no option. He wanted to hurt me but
- 53:32there's, that's right. But there's something even
- 53:34before that. Very good.
- 53:44Did you hear that? And first Samuel 1913 we took,
- 53:49we read here that Miguel took an image and laid it on the bed and
- 53:53put a pillow of goats hair at its head and covered it with the
- 53:57clothes. This was not even like a
- 53:58pocket-sized idol that we see in different parts of scripture.
- 54:03Like our sister just said, this is like a life-sized one in
- 54:06their home and she tucks it into bed, puts a blanket over.
- 54:11It put some goats hair. With the hope that when the men
- 54:14come Salzman come, it would delay them when they realize
- 54:17that. This is not really David.
- 54:19What's an idol doing in your house.
- 54:22What's a false god doing in your living room?
- 54:27So we have we have great Clues to see that this woman even
- 54:31early on her life early on in her marriage was not a
- 54:35God-fearing woman. So why would she marry a man?
- 54:38Like David? David was a man after God's
- 54:39heart But was that all David was?
- 54:46He was famous. He was respected in the nation.
- 54:51He was a military Warrior. He was loved.
- 54:55He was honored. He was good looking handsome,
- 54:59right? We're told that he was ready
- 55:01Country Boy. Physically fit.
- 55:06And she considered all of those things.
- 55:10And convinced herself to a degree, I can tolerate his
- 55:13spirituality. so, she thought, Let me make this point because
- 55:24eventually her lack of regard, for the things of God, would
- 55:28develop into a lack of respect for the man of God, her lack of
- 55:32regard, for the things of God, would eventually develop into a
- 55:35lack of respect for the man of God.
- 55:37So many of you had a critical point in your lives.
- 55:42Where you will make the second most important decision.
- 55:45After choosing to follow Jesus Christ as Lord, and it is to
- 55:49find a spouse that you can walk with.
- 55:52And if you want to establish a definite path of suffering in
- 55:57your life, can I tell you what to do?
- 55:59So you don't do it. Marry someone who does not share
- 56:02your joy and Delight in the things of God.
- 56:07Marry somebody who does not share your Delight or joy in the
- 56:12things of God. Because I'm telling you right
- 56:15now, they might tolerate what you have. because of other
- 56:20things that they admire about you, but when those other things
- 56:24Fade to have its compelling power and they will even though
- 56:28if they are looks You're going to have a struggle.
- 56:36And it's it's a real struggle. I know of a story of a man who
- 56:43was lukewarm for a great season and in his lukewarm season of
- 56:47life, he chose to got married. Only for his heart to be
- 56:51rekindled and for him to be passionate about God, but guess
- 56:55what? It didn't happen to the woman
- 56:56that he married. There's a lot of struggle there.
- 57:01It's difficult. now that won't pain you if you're lukewarm and
- 57:05you marry somebody else's lukewarm if your nominal
- 57:07Christian or somebody else and somebody else has a nominal
- 57:09Christian but if you're devoted to the advancement of the
- 57:12kingdom of God, if you actually take delight and pleasure and
- 57:15worshiping the Lord being with God's people being here on a
- 57:18Friday night and you choose to yoke yourself with someone who's
- 57:22willing to just tolerate that and doesn't share in that.
- 57:29Why would you enter into that kind of a covenant?
- 57:32Why would you even entertain that thought?
- 57:36But David and he called me an example to you because in verse
- 57:4022, I see I see a lesson. That's I don't think it's a
- 57:43direct lesson, but I think there's something there in
- 57:46relationship to my point. Notice what he says in verse 22,
- 57:49I'll make myself yet more contemptible than this and I
- 57:52will be a base in your eyes but by the female servers, mm whom
- 57:56you have spoken by them. I shall be held in honor.
- 58:00So we have an argument. Here we have a husband and wife
- 58:01arguing, right? And notice what he says, he goes
- 58:05yes, since you brought the female servants, right?
- 58:07The lowliest positions in the Kingdom, since you brought them
- 58:11up, let me put it this way. You might despise me because I'm
- 58:14not changing, but I'm going to be held in honor in their eyes.
- 58:18And here's the point that I make better to be with someone who is
- 58:23low in society, a based despised.
- 58:29Not famous, not successful, but who has an understanding of the
- 58:34things of God and to be with a queen who is cold and heart
- 58:37towards the things of God. These female servants they're
- 58:41going to honoree because they honor God in Me.
- 58:43And through me, you you're not, I take that to say, okay, then
- 58:48who cares who she is? Who cares what she can offer you
- 58:52in the flesh, better to be with those who are servants, but who
- 58:56love God and serve God, and those who have status in Beauty
- 59:00and success. An intellect, but stink in their
- 59:05spirituality. I hope you take that to heart.
- 59:09You know what, the best way to deal with slander to Shield your
- 59:13heart from pain that comes from false allegations.
- 59:16Look at verse 21 and David said to me haul, it was before the
- 59:20Lord. It was before God, I didn't do
- 59:22it for what you think. I did it men will judge your
- 59:26motives you want to serve God. Men will judge your motives,
- 59:31which is a something that no Christian should do no matter
- 59:34how tempted you are to. Look at someone judge their
- 59:36motives. The Bible says, don't you dare
- 59:38do it. He will do it.
- 59:39That's his job. But if you want to guard your
- 59:42heart from the slashes of slander, just be convinced of
- 59:45what you're doing and who you're doing it for.
- 59:48That's it. I know I did it before God.
- 59:50I know I'm Doing it for God. So it doesn't matter what you
- 59:53think, doesn't matter what your opinion is and also be Resolute.
- 59:57Be Concrete in your conviction, that no matter what, criticism
- 1:00:02you have, coming your way, no matter what kind of persecution
- 1:00:06arises? No matter who says what, look,
- 1:00:08what David says that the last part of verse 21?
- 1:00:10I will celebrate before the Lord.
- 1:00:13I ain't changing. If anything, I'm on the way to
- 1:00:16greater greater love for him. Be immovable.
- 1:00:23Sometimes, sometimes I drive. Or sometimes I watch something
- 1:00:27and I see like a stadium filled with people and I look at
- 1:00:30different news things and I see this crowd of people and I think
- 1:00:33to myself as much as we are created in the image of God,
- 1:00:36these are all Jars of Clay like they're all just particles of
- 1:00:43dust gathered together beautifully but in a moment and
- 1:00:47it just one final breath. They go back to the very dust
- 1:00:50that they were made from and I care about these people's
- 1:00:52opinions. This is who I am afraid of
- 1:00:56disappointing in my Pursuit Of God may it never be, may it
- 1:01:01never be. We're just a bunch of creative
- 1:01:04being stuffed in a Celestial ball and I'm more worried about
- 1:01:09what they have to say more than the one who created all things
- 1:01:12with his breath. Let me break.
- 1:01:15May God give us a Sanctified view of who he is and who we
- 1:01:18are. So what happens?
- 1:01:21They get into an argument. And interestingly, as we brought
- 1:01:24up in verse 23 and Michal the daughter of Saul had no child to
- 1:01:28the day of her death, you heard me say it earlier can be
- 1:01:32interpreted one or two ways that God was the source, the divine
- 1:01:36intervention, that judged her, by sealing her womb, or this was
- 1:01:40David saying, I refrained myself.
- 1:01:42I'm not going to be intimate with somebody like you and he
- 1:01:44could have had a strategic perspective on that.
- 1:01:48Which based on this I can see why like he looks at me.
- 1:01:52Ha and the way she responds she was, I've seen this before.
- 1:01:56Saul. Like like father like daughter,
- 1:02:00I just like it didn't change. You're not the person that I
- 1:02:02thought you were you're just you're spitting image of who he
- 1:02:05is. I don't want to spawn that.
- 1:02:07I don't want to reproduce that, just going to be headache.
- 1:02:11And so he Reserves. His participation and what can
- 1:02:16make reproduction possible regardless of where you stand?
- 1:02:20I think a spiritual lesson from this truth.
- 1:02:23Here it is Michal. The daughter of Saul had no
- 1:02:26child to the day of her death, those who Have the character of
- 1:02:31me, call will experience. What?
- 1:02:34Me call experience physically on a spiritual level?
- 1:02:37They will become fruitless. They will become fruitless.
- 1:02:43When you don't have an understanding of what true
- 1:02:45worship is, when you'd have no priority about pursuing worship
- 1:02:50of living in that kind of worship, you will have nothing
- 1:02:53to offer God and you will have nothing to offer your fellow
- 1:02:57man. So I'm very concerned about
- 1:03:03those who are gifted in the ability to criticize and condemn
- 1:03:08others. And I don't ever want to come to
- 1:03:13the place. I know it may cause an extreme
- 1:03:15example because she despised the concept of Passion worship
- 1:03:18altogether but she clearly lacked fervency and Zeal and
- 1:03:22passion and there was a connection between that and her
- 1:03:24not being able to have a child. There's a connection between
- 1:03:27that kind of an attitude and not being able to Bear good genuine,
- 1:03:31eternally rewarded fruit. I don't want to be fruitless I
- 1:03:37don't want something in me to stop the reality of Life
- 1:03:42spiritual life issuing from me. I hope you feel the same way.
- 1:03:46Let's pray. Lord, we We know that we don't
- 1:04:12give you the praise and worship that you always deserve.
- 1:04:16But we want to be worshippers not just when something
- 1:04:20spectacular happens from the heavens into our own world, the
- 1:04:26lord. When we look out to our fellow
- 1:04:27man, help us be worshippers help us be a Living Sacrifice and
- 1:04:32then we go home. Lord may we learn how to First
- 1:04:35be Godly in our households? We know it's not easy.
- 1:04:41Lord. We know that we are guard is
- 1:04:43down at homes. Lord, we know that we're tired.
- 1:04:47When we go home, we know that. It's much easier to fool others
- 1:04:54than to fool those that are closest to us.
- 1:04:57But, oh God, it's possible. And we pray that if Maranatha
- 1:05:01Bible Church has any role to play that it would be a
- 1:05:05contribution to the joy and love for you that would bring
- 1:05:09something of blessing to our homes and we pray that the homes
- 1:05:14that are represented here with a various circumstances that they
- 1:05:19each represent. Would return that blessing to
- 1:05:22this ministry as a collection of families to honor and glorify
- 1:05:27you. Lord, may we be true worshipers
- 1:05:33with our bodies with our singing with our serving. with our
- 1:05:39reactions with our pre-emptive plans, Lord just Cover us with
- 1:05:48the holy spirit's help. Empower we love you.
- 1:05:51Lord. And we want to be the passionate
- 1:05:55worshippers that you've called us to be, if David could be so
- 1:05:59passionate and the old Covenant, how much more us in a more
- 1:06:03glorious Covenant law, we give you all that praise tonight.
- 1:06:08In Jesus name,
