- 1:16SPEAKER_04: Keep it, Oscar.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: I was talking to her right before we started recording, and I was telling her how much I am obsessed with her products.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: And considering this is um one of the edible um products in the skin health category, that's saying a lot because I really don't gravitate towards them, like or supplements usually, but this has really changed my life and I love it.
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: It's a great way to incorporate things like collagen into your routine, and also really great for all of you out there that you know you used to drink like, for example, like coke or soda and you stopped doing that, but you still love something carbonated.
- 2:24SPEAKER_02: So without further ado, I want to introduce you guys to the founder of Skin Tea, Basima uh Moreau.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Welcome to the show, Basima.
- 2:32SPEAKER_02: I'm so, so thrilled to be hosting you.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: I'm such a huge fan.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: I'm honored to be on.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 2:37SPEAKER_02: Oh my goodness, I'm the honor is truly mine.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: I I love what you've created.
- 2:40SPEAKER_02: I think that you're such a revolutionary in what you've done because, like I said, I am like the anti-supplement queen.
- 2:49SPEAKER_02: Like I, it takes so much to sell me on anything that's over-the-counter supplements.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: So I want to get started actually.
- 2:58SPEAKER_02: Um dive into all of that, but I want to get started with you and your background and the wonderful journey that's taken place for you to launch Skin Tea and just everything that led up to it.
- 3:09SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 3:10SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
- 3:11SPEAKER_01: You know, it's really interesting because we're we're three female founders, a doctor, chef, and myself on the business side.
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: And, you know, Skin Tea was really born out of all three of us going through major difficult life challenges.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: And from that emerged this beautiful product.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: And I'm so glad, you know, you understand the essence of it.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: We we call it self-care in a can.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: So I'm glad that you that resonates with you.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: But for me, you know, I was working at Nike for 10 years, and towards the last two years, my career was on a high, but my health was shutting down.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't know it at the time, but I was on my way to stage four endometriosis and I would get that surgery years later.
- 3:48SPEAKER_01: But at that time, I actually had to leave the company and get back surgery.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: And I left because I just had like a mini uh midlife health crisis, let's call it.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: And I just kind of thought, you know, what is my purpose in life here?
- 4:00SPEAKER_01: My health is is shutting down, and back surgery really makes you face, you know, life in the eye.
- 4:05SPEAKER_01: So what was really fascinating is my surgeon in Portland, uh, Oregon at the time told me to take collagen before, during, and after my surgery.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: And I hadn't really heard much about it in 2014, but I thought, okay, you know, I'm gonna do it.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: So I was doing powders, bone broth, and I was doing pills.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Um, and after my surgery, my Nike colleagues would visit me and say, What's happening with your skin and your hair?
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Like, you don't look like you had back surgery, you know, you're glowing.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: And it hit me that the biggest change was the amount of collagen I was taking and the herbs and teas that I was drinking to calm myself down.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: So I went to my naturopathic doctor's office, and she's my co-founder, and I complained to her and I said, you know, I love how I'm I'm feeling on collagen, but do you have a brand that tastes better?
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: It was really interesting.
- 4:51SPEAKER_01: And I brought her the powders and the bone broth, and I said, There's only so much bone broth I'm willing to drink.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: There's uh the powders you have to mix them.
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: It's like only a certain way you can have them, and they get sticky sometimes.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: And I get really tired of taking a supplement.
- 5:02SPEAKER_01: Like you're like, I'm so sick of like this pile of supplements.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: And so she was like, you know what, I'm newly divorced.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: And so I've been upping my game naturally.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: And her best friend, Elizabeth, who's our third co-founder, who has a culinary background, um, had the most tragic loss.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: She had lost a daughter at two, very tragically.
- 5:19SPEAKER_01: Um, but they had been combining forces to give patients of Amy um a recipe that included teas and herbs for your mood and your immunity and your hormones, combined with collagen and getting them to drink it.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: So she gave me the recipe and I made it at home.
- 5:36SPEAKER_01: I was like, this is great.
- 5:37SPEAKER_01: But it's I went back and complained again and said, This is tastes amazing.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: Easy, but easy way to get your collagen.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: But then it takes time actually.
- 5:44SPEAKER_01: It's not so easy to buy all these great ingredients and to mix them up.
- 5:47SPEAKER_01: Can I just buy it from you?
- 5:48SPEAKER_01: Can you just make some?
- 5:49SPEAKER_01: And they and she laughed and chuckled.
- 5:51SPEAKER_01: And I was like, Well, I used to do strategy at Nike, I'll do it pro bono, I'll put a plan for you, just make it.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: I'll I'll buy it.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: I, you know, I gotta go consult.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: I just started my consulting job.
- 6:00SPEAKER_01: And then she was like, No.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: And so we got together and you know, started talking about it.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And very intuitively, as three women, we decided we were gonna create this, not only for ourselves, but we we felt strongly that other people would want this.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: So it was a very intuitive kind of let's just sign.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: We met together.
- 6:17SPEAKER_01: There was this beautiful energy of all the breakdowns that we've had and why this mattered so much to us to really spend, you know, time working on something and building something that would help people from the inside out.
- 6:29SPEAKER_01: So that's how Skin T was born.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, we all went off to save money.
- 6:33SPEAKER_01: I worked for a couple of years at Spanx.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: Um, more about that later.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: But, you know, I was able to save some money.
- 6:39SPEAKER_01: And then uh we were doing RD during those couple years and launched in January of 2019.
- 6:44SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: No, I love that.
- 6:46SPEAKER_02: I love your story because you guys definitely saw like not just, you know, how people say, like, you know, there should be a white space in the market.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: No, I think, I think more importantly, only boss honestly, Boston, I think when you see a white space in your own life and you see that there is something you really are needing, you know what I mean?
- 7:05SPEAKER_02: For whether it's for health or whatever, for whatever reason, that's where like the innovation comes in because we want the best for ourselves.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: And oftentimes, you know, just through my journey of synchronicity, I found that the best products and the best founder stories are from individuals like your like yourself, because you know, it's like solving your problem and then discovering in the in the process, and then you bring that to the world, and everyone's like, I get it, I see why you created this, you know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: So I I'm a huge fan of that, you know, that you went through that in the sense of like you really kind of created yourself as a or as a guinea pig, right?
- 7:42SPEAKER_02: And then you and then you bring it out.
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: Like I like that um because I think that's important, you know, nowadays, especially in all the clutter and stuff.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: And especially, you know, when we're talking about supplements, one of my biggest questions for you, honestly, is the whole process of creating something that is a supplement line, because I know it's tricky.
- 7:59SPEAKER_02: You know, the FDA, as all of us know, very, very hard to get around, right?
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: And then also you're here you are trying to tell people, like, you know, this is something you put in your body, which, you know, to honor to be honest, that still blows my mind that people hesitate so much, but then they'll put like a plethora of things on top of their skin that gets absorbed in their bloodstream.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: So I want to hear from you directly about how this whole journey was for you, you know, to me, like to create it, to manufacture it, and then you know, getting it out there.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: That is such an excellent question because you'll be happy to know instead of going down the supplement route, our philosophy was we just want to offer a product that's like food, that's like food or beverage.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: So our our thought around it was this is a food.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: You know, collagen was used in ancient times actually way more than it was in modern times.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: We just changed the format.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: It doesn't sound pleasant, but people would boil like grandmothers and grandmas would boil the entire animal, or they would boil, you know, boil the bone and that, you know, healthy chicken soup.
- 9:01SPEAKER_01: There's there's collagen in that.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: So in the past, it was much more prevalent in the diet.
- 9:06SPEAKER_01: And then in modern times, you know, we stripped all that away.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: And now we we offer it in a powder format.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: So what we did, we said we actually went down the food and beverage route.
- 9:16SPEAKER_01: So we didn't have to call it a supplement, but we still had to adhere to any claims.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: So that was really critical.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: So for us, these are real herbs and teas and super herbs that have had a long history.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: So whether it's hawthornberry, which was used in ancient times to heal a broken heart, and for modern medicine, it's actually used for anxiety.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: So that's why we grew so much during COVID.
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: Um, horse tail is an herb that's not a horse or a tail, but it's called horse tail.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: And it's actually uh for skin, hair, and nails.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: And it's known in the beauty industry, it has a lot of silica in it.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: You know, so what we have in here are green teas and white teas, like these ancient tried and true herbs.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: And then the collagen is just in a different format.
- 9:57SPEAKER_01: It's not necessarily that in itself is the innovation.
- 10:00SPEAKER_01: What was very innovative about skin tea and why we took off is we really disrupted what a beverage was.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: You know, we decided that the branding would be absolutely beautiful.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: We wanted it to be chic.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: We wanted it to feel like a beauty brand.
- 10:13SPEAKER_01: You know, a lot of the beverages out there were really designed by men for men, and then women drink them.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: And we said, you know what?
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: We're gonna design something by women for women, and men love it.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: And that's been the really interesting finding.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: And so that's why you see the stripes and the beauty behind it.
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: But what we did that was unique is we carbonated it.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: We're the actual first brand ever to carbonate and go to market with collagen.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: And that took several years of RD when you asked me about the process, because to be able to do that and have a nutrition facts panel that's low in calories and low in sugar and tasted good was a was a really big ask.
- 10:49SPEAKER_01: And we spent thousands of iterations to make sure it's because of what you said.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: We wanted to be able to drink it.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: We were solving a problem for ourselves.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: So we were picky.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: We weren't like, you know, in an office room kind of saying, What's a white space we could make money off of?
- 11:02SPEAKER_01: We all had jobs.
- 11:03SPEAKER_01: It was really more what is something that we would love that we felt there was integrity behind it, especially the doctor, you know.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: It's kind of a beautiful mix of women because the doctor wanted to make sure that the herbs that she wanted were in there for your skin, your mood, and your immunity.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: Elizabeth wanted to make sure it tasted fantastic with her culinary background, and I wanted it all.
- 11:22SPEAKER_01: So it was just a really good mix in terms of that.
- 11:25SPEAKER_01: But it did take getting this off the ground is really challenging.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: The beverage industry is, if you watch Shark Tank, one of the hardest industries out there.
- 11:34SPEAKER_01: It is very, very challenging.
- 11:35SPEAKER_01: So we, you know, when you ask at the beginning of the journey, we had a lot of people just kind of laugh at us and say, you know, you don't have any experience in this industry.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: It's really hard, it's a monster.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: And I think ignorance is bliss because we just kind of were like, oh, whatever, you know, we we want to bring this.
- 11:50SPEAKER_01: And so we went and begged um a brewery in Portland to take a chance on us because the minimums to to even, you know, pilot something like this are hundred or a hundred thousand, right?
- 12:01SPEAKER_01: Cans.
- 12:02SPEAKER_01: So we just wanted a little bit to test it out and see how it would go.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And this amazing brewery decided to give us a shot.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: And, you know, people often ask me how, and I said, it comes down to the story.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Like you were saying, the story was so authentic.
- 12:14SPEAKER_01: The three of us showed up humble, willing to do anything to test this out because we believed strongly it was needed.
- 12:21SPEAKER_01: And so, fast forward to four years later, we are now in printed cans, you know, we can handle the minimums, but it was a really hard journey, you know, the first couple of years, I'll tell you that much.
- 12:31SPEAKER_02: Oh, I can imagine.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: And you know what?
- 12:33SPEAKER_02: Like, I am so glad that you went through it because you have really created a phenomenal product.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: Like for everyone listening, um, you know, I know that it's like, you know, Bazima explained here, this is a very, very new category.
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's a subcategory of um, you know, wellness drinks.
- 12:49SPEAKER_02: And I think that um when we're looking at these things, we are often so um, you know, bombarded with things like way too much caffeine in something or way too much creatine or like, you know, just things that are supposed to give you instant ATP release.
- 13:04SPEAKER_02: And I've never liked that because those are the things like monster drinks and like, you know, um like pre-workouts and people end up overdosing on stuff like that.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: And I really that's why I was always like away in that, you know, I stayed away in that category.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: I I never liked energy drinks and stuff.
- 13:21SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's a very hard market because there has been this stigma created over the years because of all of the bad things that other companies have done.
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 13:31SPEAKER_02: So to like overcome that, right?
- 13:34SPEAKER_02: And to under to make people understand that listen, this is not an energy drink, this is a wellness drink.
- 13:39SPEAKER_02: And it's like you said, it's a tried and true formula that you're creating here where it's incorporating herbs, it's incorporating actual plants like ginger.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: Ginger is one of the best things you could eat on the daily.
- 13:52SPEAKER_02: Same with things like, you know, uh like vitamin C, for example.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: Like my favorite one, Boston, I wanted to tell you was the lemon lime flavor because it's caffeine-free.
- 14:01SPEAKER_02: And I love it because you know, I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm a huge coffee person.
- 14:05SPEAKER_02: I have my espresso in the morning, but if I drink too much caffeine, I get jittery.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: And like there's been times where I'm like at work and I'm like, oh my gosh, like, why are I handshaking?
- 14:13SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 14:14SPEAKER_02: And I realize I'm like, I drink too much caffeine.
- 14:18SPEAKER_02: And I think a lot of us can relate to that.
- 14:20SPEAKER_02: So to have something like this is so great because you can put it in your fridge, take it with you to work, and it's a really refreshing drink.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: And also, I wanted to mention, you know, a lot of times um people ask me, right?
- 14:33SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, since I am a doctor, people ask me little, you know, everyday tips about how to, for example, fix an upset stomach, right?
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: Or like, oh, I have too much acid reflux, or I'm blah, blah, blah.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: You know, whatever it is, nausea, vomit, you know, all that.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: And that's where I'm always like carbonated things are very helpful for some reason in that.
- 14:54SPEAKER_02: However, I am always reluctant suggesting like Coca-Cola or like, you know, a soft drink to people, obviously.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: I don't want you pumping your body with sugar, but here's this wonderful product that is carbonated.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: It's got all of the freaking things you need, the loaded with antioxidants, loaded with the, you know, the real good skin benefiting ingredients that you're you need from the inside to glow outside.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: So I I just love it.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: It's a whole the whole package.
- 15:24SPEAKER_02: And so, you know, for me, it was it was really, really cool when I experienced your products because I was like, wow, this is yeah, I'm hooked, you know, I can get behind this.
- 15:33SPEAKER_02: And I even like you know, I I played around with it, you know.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: This episode for everyone listening has been a long time in the making.
- 15:38SPEAKER_02: And so I've had some time to play around with skin tea.
- 15:41SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, I've I've really loved it.
- 15:44SPEAKER_02: It's become almost like I start craving it after a while.
- 15:47SPEAKER_02: I'm like, I really want my skin tea.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: I really want, you know.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I so you really I so appreciate that because it's funny that you mentioned the caffeine.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Two have no caffeine, two have only 30 milligrams, which is equal to a cup of tea.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: And we just launched two new flavors that actually have 85 milligrams, which is equal to a cup of coffee.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: And ironically, we weren't, you know, sitting in office going, what's the white space?
- 16:10SPEAKER_01: But we discovered that's actually a white space because so many of the energy drinks are like 120 milligrams of caffeine plus.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: We just want it to feel natural.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: Like instead of your cup of coffee, I actually love coffee.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: People don't believe that, but I love coffee, I love tea, I like it.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: I just don't like soda, like I don't like traditional soda or juices or anything like that.
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: So, what's funny about the 85 milligram is we did it so that you could still hydrate your skin, which to us is everything, right?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Hydration is everything.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: So our drink has protein from the collagen, salts, and it also has tea.
- 16:43SPEAKER_01: And studies have shown that any one of those in liquid form can be more hydrating than water.
- 16:49SPEAKER_01: So our intent was to make sure that the amount of caffeine we put was a reasonable amount that still gave people that boost.
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: Um, because we were listening to people saying there's the diehards who love the caffeine-free, and then there's those who wanted more.
- 17:02SPEAKER_01: And so we did this for our our fans, and it's become such a huge hit because you don't get the jitters and you're still hydrating your skin.
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: And that was really important to us.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and you know what?
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: That is a that's a huge um plus that you have that because I'm not gonna lie, like, for example, like with me, you had brought up anxiety, right?
- 17:21SPEAKER_02: And I think that's such an important, important topic.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, I have been a lifelong anxiety, you know, like I guess you could say sufferer or whatever you're gonna call it.
- 17:32SPEAKER_02: I've had it my whole life, okay?
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: And I really do have, like, for example, panic disorder.
- 17:37SPEAKER_02: Like it's an actually medically diagnosed condition.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: And a lot of times what I've been noticing is that, you know, people will put you on these really hard drugs, but nobody talks about lifestyle changes.
- 17:47SPEAKER_02: Nobody talks about things like how to alleviate the the triggers that, you know, induce anxiety or how to incorporate things that will naturally help you.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: You know, I remember back in the day when I was still in graduate school, I was always looking for natural remedies for my anxiety.
- 18:02SPEAKER_02: For example, like valerian root.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: I still remember the day I tried valerian root.
- 18:08SPEAKER_02: It was the most disgusting thing I've ever tasted in my life.
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: And I remember thinking, I'm like, if if this is the only option in from nature that we have right now, like things like this, like I would rather take my meds.
- 18:19SPEAKER_02: But now we're we're we're turning a corner now, you know what I mean?
- 18:23SPEAKER_02: And this in this category of wellness.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: And it makes me so happy to see that you and you know, founders such as yourself are now incorporating this idea of no, we need to reduce people's stress levels, we need to help them find solutions that are going to not only help with anxiety, but your whole body's you know, uh stress response, right?
- 18:45SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, that's that's huge.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Like when we we talk about skin health all day, especially on this podcast, and nobody wants to talk about how your internal inflammatory cycle is the real reason that you're breaking out or the real, you know.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: So I had stage four endometrosis, and like you mentioned, and you know, I I so agree with you that connection of I often say, you know, um, skin tea is my foundation and makeup is my expression.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: And what I mean by that is when you're not feeling well on the inside or what you put in your body is affecting the outside, you use makeup foundation to cover it.
- 19:22SPEAKER_01: And and my goal was I didn't want to have to do that.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: I wanted to wear makeup to express myself, to feel good, to to, you know, exemplify a mood I was in, but or to express a mood, but not to cover something up.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: That was my goal.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And and that's why what I put in my body and what's in this product is so important because to your point, the Hawthornberry, especially during COVID, I can't tell you the number of people that wrote me thanking us.
- 19:46SPEAKER_01: The Hawthorneberry is like that one time in your day where you can calm down, open a skin tea, drink it, and be like, this is my moment for myself.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: And this is, and the herb in there is meant to make you feel calm.
- 19:57SPEAKER_01: And so is the brandy.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: The other piece that's important to your point is 100% vitamin C, because that's really great with collagen in your skin.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: Um, and those pieces all really come together in terms of how it shows up on the outside.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: So the mood and then the collagen for your skin and the immunity was all important to us because that's how you know it shows up on the outside.
- 20:18SPEAKER_01: So I agree with you around that more holistic thinking.
- 20:20SPEAKER_01: And sometimes it's the simplest things that make the biggest difference, but we don't want to believe that.
- 20:25SPEAKER_01: We want a pill that we think is the magic thing or something you put on your skin that solves it all, you know.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: But it's actually an ecosystem and it's it's a combination of so many different things.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: And I, you know, I love the way you worded that.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: And I couldn't agree with you more.
- 20:39SPEAKER_02: You know, it's it's really this idea of you know, what can you do to help your body out from the inside?
- 20:46SPEAKER_02: Because our body is perfect if you think about it, you know, the machinery is perfect, the molecular pathways are almost like, you know, down to the smallest molecule, perfect.
- 20:56SPEAKER_02: And all we need to do is aid it a little bit here and there.
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: Because we live in an environment that is constantly stressing us out, whether you see it or not, and that is man-made, right?
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: So the solution also has to be man-made, it cannot come from your body naturally, because your body's not supposed to deal with all this crap out here, okay?
- 21:18SPEAKER_02: But we we've created, you know what I mean, we've created this environment for ourselves, and now it's time to fix the damage that's out there, the triggers that you know make your day-to-day more difficult.
- 21:31SPEAKER_02: And I think something like sitting down, like you said, opening a beverage, enjoying your beverage, sitting down, reading whatever you're doing, it's a moment of self care, is my point, just to reiterate what you've said.
- 21:42SPEAKER_02: And that is so crucial.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: And I was even gonna say, you know, the summer months coming up.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: I don't know about you guys listening out there, but I love a good drink, you know, and I not too strong, but I do like a good drink for the summer.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: And I think that this is really cool that you've created this, Boston, because um, I would love to see.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: People incorporate this into, like, for example, if you're gonna be drinking on a summer day, drink, you know, add in some skin tea into the cocktail, you know, like make it more holistic, make it more something that's gonna help you, you know, in terms of like, for example, hydration or like, you know, just getting those electrolytes in your body and you know, just kind of helping you along, you know, without interrupting your life.
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: That kind of thing.
- 22:24SPEAKER_01: I love that because we're all about the 80-20.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Like, you gotta enjoy life.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: I love my chocolates, I love my dark chocolate, I like to enjoy life.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: I happen to not drink, but I have a ton of friends that drink and they use it as a mixer and they love it.
- 22:35SPEAKER_01: And the reason is because we can't make any claims so people can try it, but it hydrates you to your point.
- 22:41SPEAKER_01: So the collagen in there and the teas and the herbs all hydrate you so the next morning you're not feeling so bad.
- 22:46SPEAKER_01: I've had some people say they chase the, they chase it the next morning with a skin tea and they feel better.
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: For us, it's all about how you can can you can add this to your life, you know, not be so strict about every single thing, but 80% of the time you're doing the things that nourish your body, that honor your body.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: And then when you're having a little bit of fun, if you can sprinkle it with good stuff too, why not?
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: And that's kind of that we have.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: I mean, it doesn't have to be like the strict, you know, I don't know, like, you know what I mean?
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: Like it doesn't, you're we're not nuns, all of us, you know, there are there are there are things we do to enjoy our life.
- 23:19SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's it's just a beautiful product.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: And I I think that there's so many ways that we can utilize it.
- 23:24SPEAKER_02: And that's really why I brought that up too, because you know, people often look at supplements and they're like, well, I have to take it at this time in this way.
- 23:32SPEAKER_02: And it's like, okay, let's just break that whole cycle because it's complete BS.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: And um, I was literally, you you would have laughed, Basama.
- 23:41SPEAKER_02: I was literally the other day on TikTok and I commented on this girl's post.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: I kid you not, this this young woman had about 20 supplements that she takes every day in the morning.
- 23:51SPEAKER_02: And the doctoring me was like screaming, and I was like, stop it right now.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: You, you know, because here's the thing, everyone wants to talk about, like I said, skin cycling.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, topical.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: No, guys, let's talk about supplement cycling, okay?
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Like, let's talk about things that are actually really, really um more impactful on your day-to-day than just something topical.
- 24:16SPEAKER_02: What you put in your body, what you ingest is going to impact you way more than something you put topically on your skin.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: So you have to do the homework.
- 24:25SPEAKER_02: You have to figure out what am I lacking in?
- 24:27SPEAKER_02: Do I have sagging in my skin?
- 24:30SPEAKER_02: Do I have things that are indicating that I've lost collagen, you know, density?
- 24:34SPEAKER_02: If so, let me find something that I can put directly into my body so that it can utilize it and put it where it needs to go.
- 24:41SPEAKER_02: You know, not slathering it on your face.
- 24:43SPEAKER_02: Collagen doesn't do anything when you slather it on your face.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: I can't do anymore.
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: I actually found that I stopped using expensive creams when I started following that philosophy, especially after I got sick and couldn't believe it.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: Um, I just started focusing a lot more on what I put in my mouth, being consistent with that, and then using just really clean skincare products, but it didn't have to be the most expensive because I believe the inside affects my skin more.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: And on the outside, I just do what feels good and keeps me hydrated and protects my skin.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Right, right, exactly.
- 25:14SPEAKER_02: And that's in, you know, that is really the the kind of um routine I would love to see people gravitate towards is this like way more holistic approach, you know.
- 25:24SPEAKER_02: And uh that's where I think your product is just it's it's phenomenal.
- 25:28SPEAKER_02: And and I really do believe that, you know, once you find uh one or two things that are like, I guess, in the supplement category or whatever you want to call it, um, you know, ingestible wellness, you could say, stick to it.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 25:40SPEAKER_02: Don't don't go experimenting with other crap that you don't know anything about.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: That's a big reason, you know.
- 25:45SPEAKER_02: And I'm gonna be honest with everyone listening here that, you know, I don't when I invite a brand on my show, it's to give you guys knowledge.
- 25:53SPEAKER_02: And like me and you know, boss of mine and I are sitting here and discussing exactly why skin tea is great, exactly what's in it.
- 26:00SPEAKER_02: And that is what you want to look for.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Like once you find that thing that works for you, like for me, skin tea works.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: I'm not gonna go out there looking for brand X, Y, Z in the same category.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: No, I'm gonna stick to what I like, and I'm gonna stick to what's working.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: If it works, don't change it.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: So that's my really my, you know, I have to drive that across because people keep like shifting and then they're like, oh, I'm not seeing any results.
- 26:21SPEAKER_02: Well, duh, because you're not sticking to it, you know?
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: Like, that's a huge thing.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: The other thing that's really funny is is um we tell people, we're so confident, we just tell people, okay, drink it for three to six weeks, then get off of it.
- 26:36SPEAKER_01: And it's always when they get off of it that they're like, oh my God, it really was working.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 26:41SPEAKER_01: It's almost like they're like, oh my gosh, I had to leave and I couldn't, I couldn't get it for some reason, and I noticed a difference, and I just now my skin's craving it.
- 26:48SPEAKER_01: And it's people want fast results.
- 26:51SPEAKER_01: That's what people are accustomed to in this culture that we're in.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: And I I can't stress it enough, and I agree with you that it's the consistency, whether it's with your food or with your diet or what you put in your in your beverages.
- 27:03SPEAKER_01: It's just really important that you're consistent and you can miss several days, you can miss a week, but just going back to it, the 80%, I couldn't agree more.
- 27:11SPEAKER_01: And it and it's a lifestyle shift.
- 27:13SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: And you know, while we're on the topic, I I think this is important also to bring up.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: And I would love to have this conversation because we it actually got brought up in my recent episode with Jan Marini, and we were talking about how like sugar, like excess sugar and drinks, uh really impact skin health.
- 27:30SPEAKER_02: Because, you know, uh I I know a lot of people know in Boston, I'm sure you know, but like for those who don't, you know, when you have all this extra crap like sugar floating around your body, what that does, and it goes and it attaches to your proteins, you guys, and it destroys them.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: It causes them to become this like uh like you know, basically floating around like alert system, you know, think of like a light just flashing where your body is saying, destroy it, destroy it.
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: Your immune response gets activated.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: That's all called glycosylation of your proteins.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: And what leads to that is things like poorly created products, you know what I mean?
- 28:06SPEAKER_02: Products that have not been well researched, things like that contain too much sugar to hide a terrible taste, for example.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: You know, yeah, like those kind of things.
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: And it's like we have to start getting on board with this idea of science and science driving our consumer decisions.
- 28:23SPEAKER_02: And that's so important in this category specifically.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: So I want to point out, you know, just for everyone who's curious, I'm looking at the label right now for uh the green tea grapefruit flavor.
- 28:33SPEAKER_02: And I love that the actual sugar in here, okay?
- 28:37SPEAKER_02: Carbs is different, sugar, less than one gram.
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:41SPEAKER_02: That's what you want.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Carbs is also uh one gram.
- 28:44SPEAKER_01: It's just the uh because of the erythritol, you'll see some some carbon.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, erythritol is nine grams.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Yes, you're right.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: So you are not putting things in your body, like like when you ingest the strength, it's you can rest assured you're not adding excess sugar or extras excess even carbohydrates because those do break down to sugars.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: That's important.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: That's it might seem like a small trivial fact to you guys, but that's really, really important for skin health.
- 29:08SPEAKER_02: You know, I mean, if you really want to start seeing wellness and your skin responding, you have to cut out, like I said, stressors, and sugar is a stressor.
- 29:16SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I mean, I I just think that you know that's one example, but you you guys have done so many things right here, Bossama.
- 29:22SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: You know, it's funny that you say the little things.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: That's how intentional we were because I was chuckling when you said we've seen products where they shove so many vitamins, like there's this B12 thing, there's creatine, there's this, and it looks so sexy, right?
- 29:37SPEAKER_01: Like, oh my God, this is packed, but that's gonna hurt your stomach.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: You're gonna feel sick.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: I've had people drink those drinks and come back to me and go, oh, that one has so much more dosage and potency.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, go for it.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: They try it and their stomach hurts and they feel like they're gonna vomit or their head hurts.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: It's just it doesn't feel good.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: The other side that we've seen is they'll put something great like collagen, and then they'll they'll put so much sugar to masticate the taste.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: And so taking two years that we did an RD to figure out what's that perfect mix, what's that perfect sweetener?
- 30:07SPEAKER_01: You know, we wanted to honor the keto, the paleo, the diabetics, and everyone who wanted great skin.
- 30:13SPEAKER_01: So we were really careful about that.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And we were so like if I told you how much time we spent on the right sweetener and making sure it didn't have an aftertaste and making sure it was good for you and it was not going to hurt your stomach and the dosage was just right, that that was a lot of work on our end because the details matter and the experience really matters.
- 30:30SPEAKER_01: And I think it's the founder mix that made this possible because you've got the doctor, you can imagine the conversations, the doctor, the culinary expert, and myself, as someone who's, you know, had gone through major health issues.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: It was such a beautiful marriage of you know ideas that came together and pickiness, I call it.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: Like we were all picky in our own way, which resulted in this product.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: So the attention to detail is really important.
- 30:54SPEAKER_01: And I and I still don't believe that overdosing on certain vitamins is good for the body either.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Your body just gets rid of it or it gets sick.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: So exactly.
- 31:03SPEAKER_02: No, 100%.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: And you know, even to add to your point, like, you know, we were talking about energy drinks earlier, right?
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, I the one of the biggest killers and literally killers in energy drinks is that immediate release of ATP.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: ATP is your main source of energy in your body.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: And when you are just flooding your body with that kind of shit, listen, guys, it's gonna impact your heart.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you right now, I have had so many encounters with the patients and people I know in general, even outside of the hospital, that are just taking too many of these drinks that have either, like we said, caffeine or these instant energy, just you know what I mean, like molecules in there.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: And I I am always scared for people when they pick up an energy drink because it's like, oh my gosh, please don't get hooked on that.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: You know, and that's another thing.
- 31:49SPEAKER_02: It's like this idea of like, you know, we live in a world now where everyone is trying to um, you know, find clean products, you know, things that aren't gonna get you addicted to something.
- 31:59SPEAKER_02: Well, here you go.
- 32:00SPEAKER_02: Here's a solution for you.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Because I guarantee you, half the things you guys are drinking that are carbonated that you think are good for you, they are going to get you hooked on them.
- 32:08SPEAKER_02: You know, even coffee does that.
- 32:10SPEAKER_02: Like, if you don't drink coffee for two or three days, the migraine you get is like next level, bro.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, it's so bad.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: So there's a lot of things, you know, and there's a lot of solutions here that I think um are intentional, but also like, you know, maybe can get overlooked.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: And that's why I'm kind of you know babbling on and on.
- 32:32SPEAKER_02: But in uh, you know, I want to ask you though, uh Vasama, in terms of like, you know, the brand, I I love the the carbonated um beverage, but like what are your future plans?
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Like, are you guys gonna be coming out with like uh another way to kind of create skin tea, or is this the the direction you're gonna be following for a while?
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Well, we can't announce it yet, but our you know, it all starts with our mission.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: Our mission is to nurture health and beauty and nurture keyword because we believe exactly like what you said, it's inside of you, right?
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: So we want to nurture health and beauty from the inside out every day.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: So our our mission is we we innovate in that space.
- 33:09SPEAKER_01: So it's not only going to be, you know, collagen drinks, it's it's it's products within that space.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: So we do have an exciting one in a different format than this um that will be coming out sometime uh this year.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: So we can't announce it yet, but we're really excited.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: We've been listening a lot a lot to our consumers, and so that product line will be based on that, but it will be all about you know the inside out and uh and just a different vehicle.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 33:33SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: I can't wait to see it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_02: And you know, I just uh man, I'm I'm a huge fan, like for real.
- 33:39SPEAKER_02: Like I um I believe in what you're doing, I believe in your mission, and I think that this is something that has been so needed in this industry because I kid you not, there's a reason why I don't bring supplement brands on my show, and it's because I'm so picky about it.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: I'm just like one of those, like I don't know, I like eccentric about this topic because it's it's so like a lot of the beverage brands out there, you know, we're we're super disruptive because we really own the skin space, and there's a lot out there around gut health.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Um, that that people are are kind of, you know, it's becoming a very crowded market there.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: But we stay true and authentic to this idea of skin.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: And everything that we put in our beverage is is all about that.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: And but what's been really great is that men have embraced it, especially athletes.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: They love it.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: They just, you know, it was the biggest compliment when, you know, we asked them why they drink it, and they're like, just because it's so light and refreshing and low in sugar.
- 34:40SPEAKER_01: We're like, perfect, that's great.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: But everything we have in there for us is really around, you know, that intentionality behind your skin, which is your largest, largest organ, right?
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: And the ultimate in terms of radiance.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: So it's been a really amazing journey for us because it hasn't, you know, it's in the past, to your point, it's always been in the form of a supplement.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: And uh, when we were the finalist at Indie Beauty Expo, which is a true beauty expo, when we first launched, we could not believe it, but we were the first can ever to be next to two supplements, right?
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: There was a top three, and they said they'd never ever accepted a drink in a can before as in Jessica City.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: And so we were the very first.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: So it was really exciting, and that's when I think that mindset is starting to shift that you can drink your skincare, but not all product is equal.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: So um, you know, the the thought the idea behind that, you know, what you drink and what you eat is your skincare routine is something new to people.
- 35:37SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, absolutely, and I think that you know that that's phenomenal, by the way.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: Congratulations for that.
- 35:42SPEAKER_02: That's a huge that's a huge, you know, milestone, I think, for uh, you know, not only your brand, but also opening up this entire category for you know entrepreneurs and for people and for consumers.
- 35:53SPEAKER_02: I mean, that's huge.
- 35:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's you know, to be a trailblazer, it it you really have to have the guts, you know what I mean?
- 36:00SPEAKER_02: And I think that you your team and your partners, you guys have done things something beautiful here.
- 36:04SPEAKER_02: And I am just uh, you know, I can't wait.
- 36:07SPEAKER_02: I can't wait to see what you do next.
- 36:09SPEAKER_02: So I I mean, I love the products and I know everyone listening, you're gonna really love them.
- 36:13SPEAKER_02: I want you guys right now go to skin tea and it's spelled skin te one e okay.com and um just check out the brand, you know, and buy both the caffeine-free and the caffeine and try both and see what you like because it's really, really nice.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: And you know, especially with summer coming up, I'm gonna say it again.
- 36:33SPEAKER_02: This is a really great option, you guys.
- 36:35SPEAKER_02: Like, you know, when you're sitting outside in the in the heat or whatever you're doing, you need something refreshing.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: And on top of that, you need something hydrating.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: And I think that this is going to really, really elevate your routine as is.
- 36:46SPEAKER_02: So um, I really highly suggest it.
- 36:49SPEAKER_02: Check it out, leave your comments, send us some questions.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: If you have any questions for Basimon and her uh co-founders or her team, leave them in our comment section.
- 36:57SPEAKER_02: We also have a QA that goes up on Spotify for every single episode that we publish.
