- 0:10Speaker 1: and information on the NFL Draft the New England Patriots.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Like now the writers of Patriots dot Com, We're back
- 0:16Speaker 1: here at so Let's Stadium for our final Draft podcast preview.
- 0:20Speaker 1: We're gonna wrap everything up today, give you a little
- 0:23Speaker 1: bit of an overview on Wednesday as we head into
- 0:28Speaker 1: Thursday night, the start of the draft for the twenty
- 0:31Speaker 1: twenty two NFL season, and the first round will take
- 0:34Speaker 1: place Thursday night, But before then, a lot to talk
- 0:38Speaker 1: about with the Patriots in particular, and we're gonna focus
- 0:40Speaker 1: on some of those things right now. We'll start off
- 0:43Speaker 1: just you know, we we've broken down all the positions.
- 0:47Speaker 1: We've given you some of the guys that we like
- 0:49Speaker 1: at the top of those positions, some guys that we
- 0:51Speaker 1: think the Patriots might be interested in, and some guys
- 0:54Speaker 1: maybe that would be candidates to go later on Day two,
- 0:57Speaker 1: day three in the draft. But I want to get
- 1:00Speaker 1: as as normal. I'm joined by Matise Bauman and Mike
- 1:03Speaker 1: Do So I want to get your opinions. Tease I'll
- 1:06Speaker 1: start with you just give me your positions of need
- 1:11Speaker 1: in order. What you think should be the top of
- 1:14Speaker 1: the priority list for the Patriots. Well, it's funny because
- 1:16Speaker 1: every single position we did, I feel like there was
- 1:18Speaker 1: always a prospect like, oh, he's a good fit, Like
- 1:20Speaker 1: we really need somebody there. But I think it's really cornerback, edge,
- 1:23Speaker 1: and receiver. You know, those are the three. Yeah, and
- 1:26Speaker 1: I'd be fine with any of those being picked in
- 1:28Speaker 1: the top one and two rounds. Yeah. I mean, I
- 1:30Speaker 1: think you can make an argument for tackle, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 1: I mean, certainly wide receiver, certainly cornerback. When you see
- 1:35Speaker 1: who departed, they were lacking depth there last year. Surprise,
- 1:39Speaker 1: they never drafted anybody last season. Felt like this was coming.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Seaun Wade they did bring in later in the process.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Who knows, you know what kind of potential he has.
- 1:46Speaker 1: But I agree, I think edge, edge, and cornerback defense.
- 1:51Speaker 1: You know, think a lot of tension has been played
- 1:52Speaker 1: to the linebacker position, and you know they've got a
- 1:55Speaker 1: lot of guys there. I think that's that's the thing
- 1:56Speaker 1: of you know, we talk about Devin Lloyd, Nakobe, Dean, guys.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It would be available toward the end of that first round.
- 2:03Speaker 1: But how do they feel about the guys that you know,
- 2:05Speaker 1: Ray Kua McMillan last year was you know, they liked
- 2:08Speaker 1: him early in camp, he towards ACL they resigned him.
- 2:10Speaker 1: But you know he's coming off an a CL injury.
- 2:13Speaker 1: Cameron mcgron drafted him last year. He didn't play after
- 2:16Speaker 1: because of his a cl two years ago. So he's,
- 2:19Speaker 1: you know, essentially a rookie this year. Brought in mac Wilson,
- 2:22Speaker 1: brought back Jawan Bentley, Harvey Longie, Javadi Tavai, Tarez Hall.
- 2:25Speaker 1: He was missing all last year. So a lot of questions,
- 2:27Speaker 1: a lot of guys, but a lot of questions they're
- 2:29Speaker 1: on the inside. How do they truly feel do they
- 2:31Speaker 1: want to give those guys a chance? They want to
- 2:32Speaker 1: give the other linebackers on the edge, like Ooja Jennings Perkins.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Did those guys get a chance to line up alongside
- 2:40Speaker 1: Matthew Judeon? So I think, for me defense, I want
- 2:43Speaker 1: to come out of this draft feeling like, hey, we
- 2:45Speaker 1: got a couple of guys that can come in and
- 2:48Speaker 1: play immediately, make an impact, maybe have a you know,
- 2:51Speaker 1: some kind of physical presence to them that re establishes
- 2:54Speaker 1: this patriot's defense and gives them a new foundations as
- 2:58Speaker 1: they move forward to compliment Matt Jones and these Yeah,
- 3:00Speaker 1: I mean, I think that that corner would be my
- 3:03Speaker 1: my one spot that I would say above all the others.
- 3:05Speaker 1: But I totally agree with you guys and the way
- 3:08Speaker 1: you talked about No, Mike, you know, gravitates toward the
- 3:11Speaker 1: edge and in tease, you're you're not wrong when you
- 3:13Speaker 1: talk about the linebackers and the receivers, and and we
- 3:16Speaker 1: can't leave out the offensive line either. Now, I think
- 3:19Speaker 1: a lot will depend at twenty one is to how
- 3:22Speaker 1: it's so unpredictable. It's I know it's always unpredictable, but
- 3:25Speaker 1: it seems this year there's less certainty. Even with the
- 3:29Speaker 1: very first pick. You know, now you know it's it's Walker,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and it had been Hudginson, you know, before you know
- 3:35Speaker 1: the whole process started, it was Thibodeau. So who knows,
- 3:37Speaker 1: you know, who's going to end up going at the
- 3:39Speaker 1: top of the draft, and who knows if any quarterbacks
- 3:42Speaker 1: end up throwing a monkey wrench into those plans. So
- 3:45Speaker 1: I think the challenge for Bill Belichick is to sort
- 3:49Speaker 1: of adapt to the way the board unfolds and then
- 3:52Speaker 1: figure it out, because I think it's easy to say,
- 3:55Speaker 1: like Mike said, well you gotta go defense, you got
- 3:58Speaker 1: to fix this defense. But I think the defense, I
- 4:02Speaker 1: think there's a couple of defenses in the league that
- 4:04Speaker 1: can go out and stop and be really competitive with
- 4:07Speaker 1: any offense. I think they need to to improve the
- 4:11Speaker 1: offense to get it to a point where they can
- 4:13Speaker 1: beat these teams, say, you know, thirty four or twenty eight,
- 4:17Speaker 1: which is again that they couldn't win last year. I
- 4:19Speaker 1: think they were, you know, over the season and games
- 4:21Speaker 1: allowing twenty five or more points, so that that needs
- 4:25Speaker 1: to change. You can't just rely on your defense holding
- 4:28Speaker 1: you you know, under twenty and you know, finding your
- 4:30Speaker 1: way to win. So I understand Mike's point about defense.
- 4:33Speaker 1: I would tend to agree that I think that the
- 4:35Speaker 1: bigger needs are on defense, but it's going to depend
- 4:37Speaker 1: on how the board unfolds too. I think the big
- 4:39Speaker 1: part of that is offensive line. And you know two
- 4:43Speaker 1: guys that that stick out, Bernard Raymond and Trevor Penning,
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know, two of the top tackles they don't, you know,
- 4:49Speaker 1: always seem to be going by twenty one and I
- 4:52Speaker 1: think they needed tackle, just given Isaiah Win's injury history,
- 4:55Speaker 1: Trent Brown's injury history behind them. Justin Harran, I don't know.
- 5:00Speaker 1: I mean, maybe he's a maybe he's a swing backup.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I'm not sure if he's destined to be a starting
- 5:04Speaker 1: left tackle or right tackle in the league. So I
- 5:07Speaker 1: think there could certainly be an argument if one of
- 5:09Speaker 1: those guys is there. I think overall, that might to
- 5:12Speaker 1: me make the most sense to secure the tackle position.
- 5:17Speaker 1: I know everyone is probably a little bit afraid of
- 5:20Speaker 1: guard and the interior, but I mean, let's face it,
- 5:24Speaker 1: they've lost both of their starters from last year. You
- 5:26Speaker 1: really like Michael and when you coming back in and
- 5:29Speaker 1: there's certainly four or five guards, Zion Johnson being one
- 5:34Speaker 1: of them, that that's commonly mocked to them. So I
- 5:37Speaker 1: really don't think that that's as big of a need
- 5:39Speaker 1: to go immediately. But you know, to Paul's point, I
- 5:41Speaker 1: think reinforcing a very important position. You know, one of
- 5:45Speaker 1: those tackles goes down, right now, what do you kind
- 5:47Speaker 1: of do when I go back to Nate's solder bringing
- 5:49Speaker 1: him in, you know, knowing that Matt Light was coming
- 5:52Speaker 1: toward the end, you had kind of a succession plan
- 5:54Speaker 1: in place, and look what happened. You know, he gets
- 5:56Speaker 1: thrust right into the fireplane, you know, across from him
- 5:59Speaker 1: when Sebastian Bolman went down. So I like to see
- 6:02Speaker 1: a little bit more forethought in terms of those positions.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And I think tackle is a vital one. And I
- 6:07Speaker 1: think that's a pick where although it's an offensive lineman,
- 6:10Speaker 1: if you took one in the first round, you could
- 6:11Speaker 1: say it's a necessary pick. And I think it could.
- 6:14Speaker 1: It could help them, and it might be somebody that
- 6:16Speaker 1: they need sooner than later. Yeah, I agree with the
- 6:19Speaker 1: need at offensive line, and they could certainly go in
- 6:21Speaker 1: that direction, and I think it would be a smart pick.
- 6:23Speaker 1: I wouldn't necessarily be a sexy one or one that
- 6:26Speaker 1: I'm happy with because I think they have so many
- 6:28Speaker 1: other needs. But Tis, I'm going to tea you up
- 6:30Speaker 1: right now, because I know you like to get You're
- 6:33Speaker 1: enamored with the flashy toys. So I'm going to ask
- 6:36Speaker 1: you wide receivers. Let's say the Patriots were at twenty
- 6:41Speaker 1: one and all of a sudden you get to twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen.
- 6:46Speaker 1: You know, somewhere where the Patriots could realistically get up
- 6:49Speaker 1: to Is there a guy, a wide receiver that you
- 6:53Speaker 1: think is worth moving up for. I would say Williams
- 6:56Speaker 1: if he was healthy. But honestly, I think one of
- 6:58Speaker 1: the Ohio State guys, like if a Lava slips and
- 7:00Speaker 1: you know he's in the early teens, I think he
- 7:02Speaker 1: might be worth it. Maybe Treylon Burke's too, Um, you know,
- 7:05Speaker 1: just somebody. If you're getting a receiver that early. My
- 7:07Speaker 1: thing is we get a first round player, they need
- 7:08Speaker 1: to be a day one starter. So yeah, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 1: a Lave or Treylon Burks. Yeah, and how do those
- 7:12Speaker 1: guys fit in? Now You've got DeVante Parker coming in,
- 7:15Speaker 1: so you do have a little bit of um, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 1: veteran depth up above. And there's no question that they
- 7:20Speaker 1: need to know, find elite talent and at that position
- 7:23Speaker 1: and really give mac Jones, you know, just somebody who
- 7:25Speaker 1: can you know, stretch the field horizontal, le vertically, whatever
- 7:29Speaker 1: it is. But I think, you know, there's a lot
- 7:31Speaker 1: of guys, and you know, we talked about runs. I
- 7:33Speaker 1: think that's a great question with the receivers. You know,
- 7:36Speaker 1: does all of a sudden somebody takes Wilson and here
- 7:39Speaker 1: we go, Now, it's Williams and a lave and uh,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you know, and Burks I think is a fascinating one,
- 7:45Speaker 1: a guy that we talked about a lot on the
- 7:47Speaker 1: on the podcast we did about the wide receivers um.
- 7:50Speaker 1: But somebody who can do a bunch of a bunch
- 7:52Speaker 1: of different things for them. And but again you mentioned
- 7:55Speaker 1: Christian Watson. I think he's an outstanding one. I think
- 7:57Speaker 1: at bare minimum, I just would love to tap an
- 8:00Speaker 1: interior player, you know, not someone who can plain in
- 8:03Speaker 1: the slot, who can get open quick and bring some
- 8:05Speaker 1: electricity into the middle. Nothing against you know, the guys
- 8:08Speaker 1: that they have. I do think, you know, Kendrick Bourne's
- 8:10Speaker 1: pretty good after the run. I'd love, you know, a
- 8:12Speaker 1: little bit more explosion from Jacoby Myers. But I think
- 8:15Speaker 1: that would be a nice compliment to the group that
- 8:16Speaker 1: they have. But I think long term it's a huge need.
- 8:19Speaker 1: I'd love to take two wide receivers in this draft,
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know, Day two, day three, grab a couple of guys,
- 8:24Speaker 1: round out the depth and try to build with an
- 8:26Speaker 1: eye of the future with it would be you know,
- 8:27Speaker 1: right in line to what the Patriots have done recently,
- 8:29Speaker 1: because the depth that wide receiver has been incredible the
- 8:33Speaker 1: last three or four years, and it's not considered to
- 8:35Speaker 1: be quite as deep and quite as talented this year.
- 8:38Speaker 1: So that's you know, it's perfect. You know, let's take
- 8:41Speaker 1: one in the third and one in the fifth, you know. So,
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, obviously I'm being tongue in cheek there. I
- 8:47Speaker 1: do think that they need to find some explosiveness for
- 8:51Speaker 1: the offense so they can keep up. But as I
- 8:53Speaker 1: mentioned earlier, and just overall team speed. And that's why
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm sort of intrigued by the linebackers a little bit.
- 9:00Speaker 1: You know, the Deans and the law, you know, those
- 9:01Speaker 1: kinds of players. And I'm not gonna lie. I look
- 9:05Speaker 1: around the league and I see some of these playmakers
- 9:08Speaker 1: play and work out for their teams a little undersized,
- 9:11Speaker 1: don't really fit the mold, and I wonder, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 1: what would the Patriots defense look like one of those?
- 9:17Speaker 1: Are they just going to be content to stick with
- 9:19Speaker 1: Jawan Bentley? You know he body side he does. I mean,
- 9:23Speaker 1: I like him, but you know, I think that I
- 9:25Speaker 1: think I think he's a fine player. I don't think
- 9:27Speaker 1: that he's the explosive athlete that some of these other
- 9:30Speaker 1: guys are. And I mean I'd like to see what
- 9:33Speaker 1: the Patriots defense looks like with three down playmaker who's
- 9:37Speaker 1: kind of in the mix on everything, whether it's a
- 9:39Speaker 1: pass or a run. It's uh, it's certainly worth debating,
- 9:42Speaker 1: you know, what is What has ray Kua McMillan got,
- 9:44Speaker 1: What has mac Wilson got? What are those players? What
- 9:46Speaker 1: do they look like here? Um? I think those are
- 9:49Speaker 1: great questions. There's a lot of unproven guys. You've had
- 9:52Speaker 1: a lot of departures of veterans Van Noy, High Tower,
- 9:55Speaker 1: J C. Jackson, Jamie Collins, guys who played a lot
- 9:59Speaker 1: of snaps over a lot time. I think you're seeing
- 10:02Speaker 1: a reset of sorts here. I'll be curious how they
- 10:04Speaker 1: compliment that, you know, with the draft. So before we
- 10:07Speaker 1: wrap this up, tease, let's say the Patriots they sit
- 10:10Speaker 1: tight at twenty one, and I'm gonna let you look
- 10:14Speaker 1: at your crystal ball. What would you think that the
- 10:16Speaker 1: Patriots might do. I think they're taking to Kobe Dean
- 10:19Speaker 1: or Devin Lloyd. I think it's a safe pick. You know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: he's going to be a leader here for a long time,
- 10:23Speaker 1: can play three downs. I think it's a safe pick.
- 10:25Speaker 1: You don't need to move up. He's right there. Yeah,
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's hard hard to argue with with with those two guys,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and I go back and forth between the two of
- 10:32Speaker 1: them of of how well they fit in here. But
- 10:35Speaker 1: just to switch it up, I'm gonna go with the tackles.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I'm gonna say one of those guys, Raymond or Penning falls. Um.
- 10:40Speaker 1: I think that though, that's a spot where you can
- 10:43Speaker 1: get a player who will make an impact for a
- 10:45Speaker 1: long time. And you know, maybe those are the guys
- 10:48Speaker 1: you're not going to get if you trade down a
- 10:50Speaker 1: little bit. So I think at twenty one, maybe maybe
- 10:51Speaker 1: an offensive tackle. Yeah, and I'm gonna go corner. Um.
- 10:54Speaker 1: You know, I think McDuffie probably won't be still there,
- 10:58Speaker 1: so maybe I'll go Andrew Booth. But I think there's
- 11:01Speaker 1: a chance. And again it's it all always changes based
- 11:04Speaker 1: on the way, uh, you know, the board unfolds in
- 11:06Speaker 1: front of them. You can't just say, well, they're gonna
- 11:08Speaker 1: take a corner and then all of a sudden, you know, Booth, McDuffie, Sauce, Stingley,
- 11:13Speaker 1: They're all gone. You know, I'm not just gonna take
- 11:16Speaker 1: like the seventh corner just because well it says here,
- 11:19Speaker 1: I'm gonna take a corner. I got to adjust at
- 11:21Speaker 1: that point. But I think I think someone will someone
- 11:25Speaker 1: will slip and they'll be able to get a pretty
- 11:27Speaker 1: good player. You know, I'm not convinced that McDuffie will
- 11:30Speaker 1: be gone. I think there's a chance that he could fit.
- 11:33Speaker 1: I actually like his teammate too, But not in the
- 11:35Speaker 1: first round Kylie Gordon. Um. You know, maybe on day two.
- 11:39Speaker 1: But corner is a position. I think they have to
- 11:42Speaker 1: come out with some corner that I would be very
- 11:43Speaker 1: surprised if they do not take a cornerback in this draft.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I mean, I was surprised last year that they didn't.
- 11:49Speaker 1: And to be honest, you know, we all have our reactions,
- 11:52Speaker 1: but there's I mean, all all the positions we're talking
- 11:55Speaker 1: about are valid, and as much as we don't want
- 11:56Speaker 1: a guard, if they took a guard at some point
- 11:59Speaker 1: in the first day or two, it's you get why
- 12:02Speaker 1: we'd all certainly prefer somebody who's gonna make an impact
- 12:06Speaker 1: on the defense or make an impact on the offense
- 12:08Speaker 1: in terms of playmaking. But there's a lot of needs.
- 12:11Speaker 1: So it's it's it's not going to be hard to
- 12:13Speaker 1: kind of read the tea leaves of why they took
- 12:15Speaker 1: a lot of different players in a lot of different positions. Right,
- 12:17Speaker 1: we'll have a lot more for you obviously as the
- 12:19Speaker 1: weekend unfolds. Will be with you Thursday night live for
- 12:23Speaker 1: the draft. The entirety of the first round will start
- 12:25Speaker 1: at seven thirty, but we'll be with you throughout the
- 12:29Speaker 1: first round, so that's probably gonna go seven thirty two
- 12:32Speaker 1: a round, I don't know, eleven thirty midnight or so.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You know, we'll have the same thing for day two.
- 12:38Speaker 1: We'll be with you. I think we're starting at seven,
- 12:40Speaker 1: going from seven to ten on day two and on
- 12:43Speaker 1: Saturday for those real diehards out there that you know,
- 12:48Speaker 1: somehow don't want to go outside and golf and do
- 12:50Speaker 1: something with your life. You know, you know, if you
- 12:52Speaker 1: ever talked to a girl, dude, do something, get out
- 12:55Speaker 1: of your basement. But we'll be with you from two
- 12:58Speaker 1: to four on Saturdays. I know Morrel would rather be
- 13:01Speaker 1: you know, in his basement watching like a Star Trek
- 13:03Speaker 1: convention or something, but you know he'll be with us instead.
- 13:06Speaker 1: So we will have you covered for the draft. We
- 13:09Speaker 1: will have all Fred's live reactions, which are worth the
- 13:13Speaker 1: price of admission alone right there, so you'll get to
- 13:16Speaker 1: hear what he what he really thinks of the first
- 13:18Speaker 1: round pick on Thursday, and then you'll get to hear
- 13:21Speaker 1: what he thinks about him on Friday after he talks
- 13:23Speaker 1: himself into a great pick, So you have that to
- 13:25Speaker 1: look forward to over the weekend. Thanks for all the
- 13:27Speaker 1: help on the Draft podcast Tease. It's nice having you.
- 13:31Speaker 1: We'll incorporate you more as you somehow say that you
- 13:34Speaker 1: want to do more. I don't know why you do that,
- 13:36Speaker 1: and you don't get paid more, but whatever the case
- 13:39Speaker 1: may be, will be with you all weekend. Thanks for listening.
