- 0:00Hey, welcome back to She Speaks Live podcast and today's
- 0:03powerful conversation. I am joined by author and
- 0:06speaker Amy Loughlin. This episode is an invitation to
- 0:12move us beyond the surface level faith into a deeper, more
- 0:17intimate relationship with God. Amy shared that through
- 0:21intentional time and scripture, fasting, journaling, and
- 0:25immersing herself in the stories of Jesus, she discovered how
- 0:29deeply transcended informative it is.
- 0:31When we stop just reading the Word and begin experiencing it
- 0:35personally together. We talk about really what keeps
- 0:39us stuck in the surface level faith, the things that hinder us
- 0:44from a deeper intimacy with God, and why busyness, fear and
- 0:48security and doubt can keep us from transformation.
- 0:52This conversation will encourage you to release the distractions,
- 0:56lies, and fears that keep you floating on the surface and
- 1:00instead step into the deep places God is calling us into.
- 1:05There's always more of His presence, more revelation and
- 1:09more transformation available to us through His Word.
- 1:13And if you've been craving A deeper connection with God, this
- 1:17episode will stir your hunger for his presence and remind you
- 1:21that your story matters because of the faithfulness of Jesus
- 1:25woven throughout it. So if you're ready, I'm ready.
- 1:29Here's my guest, Amy Loughlin. Hi, Amy, welcome to She speaks
- 1:33Live. I am so excited you are here
- 1:37going to give us an amazing message for us today.
- 1:40Thank you. Thank you so much just for
- 1:42welcoming me into your space and into your community.
- 1:45And I'm excited, yeah. Yes, I'm looking forward to this
- 1:49message. You had written a book called A
- 1:51Story Worth Living. Reclaim your confidence, purpose
- 1:56and peace. And I love anything with story,
- 2:01especially God's stories and how he has worked in and through our
- 2:06lives with his faithfulness. And it's worth sharing and
- 2:11obviously those podcasts called She Speaks Life.
- 2:14We are speaking life and testimonies about what God has
- 2:18done in our life. And that's exactly what your
- 2:20book is all about. And so it's really taking which
- 2:25I absolutely love. This is the heartbeat of myself
- 2:29to you is just taking that head knowledge of the word of God and
- 2:33and bringing it to more of a heart encounter with the word
- 2:37and in your relationship with the Lord and I love how you
- 2:42showed like the small steps can lead to having a big faith and I
- 2:49absolutely love everything about this.
- 2:52And before we dive more into it. I always ask my guests what is a
- 2:58scripture verse that is resonating with you and why?
- 3:02Great. OK, I love diving in and
- 3:05starting with Scripture, so I'd love to choose one verse and
- 3:10just saturate myself in it each week.
- 3:13And so I'm just going to use the one that I've been spending time
- 3:17with this week and it's one of my favorites.
- 3:20It's a go to, and it's Romans 828.
- 3:23I am convinced that nothing can separate us from God's love.
- 3:29Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither fears
- 3:35for today nor our worries about tomorrow, not even the powers of
- 3:40hell can separate us from God's love.
- 3:44And so you asked why I think I was drawn to this verse for this
- 3:49week. For one, I love the confidence
- 3:53in that verse that I am convinced it just leaves no room
- 3:57for doubt, that there's absolutely nothing that can
- 4:00separate us from the love of God.
- 4:02And I think so many of us, especially those worries about
- 4:11tomorrow, the fears for today, whatever that might look like,
- 4:17even when those creep in and try to distract us, it still cannot
- 4:22separate us that we are, we are absolutely one and united with
- 4:27Christ. And there's nothing that can
- 4:30happen that can separate that so.
- 4:32Yes, it's so good. And the love of God reminds me
- 4:36of who I am, my identity in him. You know, I'm loved so much by
- 4:43him and so valuable. And it makes you know that
- 4:48you're seen by him. And I mean, there's all kinds of
- 4:52facets with it. So I, I love what it does for
- 4:56you. And it's so true that it just
- 4:59releases that fear and that doubt and distraction, knowing
- 5:03how deeply loved you are and how hard it is actually to wrap your
- 5:08whole mind, you know, about. Yeah.
- 5:11Of how much he loves us. So it's just, it's Infinity.
- 5:16It's incredible how it's there's no limits to how much he loves
- 5:21us. And so I remember somebody
- 5:23saying he can't for the first time I heard this.
- 5:26And I know many of us have heard this already, but you know, when
- 5:29you're a baby Christian just starting out, someone said he
- 5:33can't love you any less or any more than how he loves you, you
- 5:38now. And I'm like, wow, so there's
- 5:40not this. I'm trying to get his, you know,
- 5:43more of his approve his love, you know, and, and it's, it's
- 5:48already there how much he loves us.
- 5:50And it's so reassuring. So OK, so let's dive into you,
- 5:56yes, your message and your book and what really inspired you to
- 6:03write this book Story worth living.
- 6:06Yeah, okay. Well, it's a little bit of a
- 6:10long story, so I'll I'll give you a short version of it.
- 6:13It it really was birth from an experience that I had about four
- 6:18years ago now. I was on staff with our church
- 6:24and life was great from all tents and purposes.
- 6:30I was checking all the boxes, I was reading my Bible, I was
- 6:34praying, I was giving, I was in a small group, I was
- 6:37volunteering as well as that was literally my career.
- 6:42And yet I felt spiritually dry. I felt like I had, and dry might
- 6:52be a little too hard of a word. I felt like I had definitely
- 6:55plateaued and I just felt this this pull, this calling to peel
- 7:04back some layers and that I didn't even know we're there,
- 7:08that God was just really wooing me for more a more intimate
- 7:14relationship and a more intimate connection with him.
- 7:18And that sensation. I just, it wasn't anything that
- 7:22I could satisfy from some of the things that I would was normally
- 7:25doing. And he was just pursuing me for
- 7:29a few weeks. And then finally we had we had a
- 7:32snow day. We had a little bit of a snow in
- 7:35North Carolina. And when we get any kind of
- 7:38snow, everything shuts down. And so I sat down with my
- 7:42journal for a couple of days and just wrote out this.
- 7:47It ended up I called it a pilgrimage and it was a it was
- 7:52very much based and inspired by the first couple of verses in
- 7:56Hebrews. And I'll paraphrase that was,
- 8:00you know, throw off anything that hinders run the race that
- 8:03is set before us, fixing your eyes on Jesus, the author and
- 8:07perfector of of your faith. And so I was asking myself, how
- 8:12do I fix my eyes on Jesus? And because I had read the Bible
- 8:17cover to cover before and but I knew that was not what I was
- 8:24wanting to do again or or even being called to do again.
- 8:28And so I ended up writing out this.
- 8:31It was about six or seven months of this process that I wanted to
- 8:36dedicate my side, myself and my time to and with him.
- 8:42And so for each month, I dedicated and focused on one
- 8:47story of Scripture. It was from the New Testament.
- 8:50It was an encounter that Jesus had with one person, though I
- 8:55chose seven of them, wrote them down, and then I also actually
- 8:58paired them with some type of release, some type of, you know,
- 9:03going back to again to Hebrews, throw off anything that hinders
- 9:07that kept sticking with me too. I thought, OK, what is hindering
- 9:10me? Why have I plateaued?
- 9:12Is there something that I need to release so that I can dig
- 9:18deeper and, and find that connection that I know is there
- 9:21for me? And so it, it was basically some
- 9:26very unique types of fasting that I would pair with each of
- 9:29these stories. And for example, there was one
- 9:34month I, I fasted from comfort and so I slept on the floor for
- 9:39a month. There was another month I did a
- 9:43unique food fast, another month that I facet from vanity.
- 9:49I, I didn't wear makeup, I didn't fix my hair.
- 9:52You know, I was just trying to be very plain.
- 9:53And so there were just unique ways that really, really shook
- 9:57me out of my comfort zone. And then again, and I was
- 10:01pairing them with these stories and just immersing myself in
- 10:05these scenes with Jesus. And then journaling.
- 10:09I just, yeah, journaled my heart out and wrote down anything and
- 10:14everything that I felt like I was learning through that
- 10:17experience. You know, the, the things that
- 10:21were challenging me and pushing me to grow, the things that I
- 10:24was learning about my identity and his identity that that were
- 10:30just catching me off guard. That things that I, I just never
- 10:34realized before. And so one of those stories that
- 10:39I chose to really spend some time with is the story of the
- 10:43bleeding woman that's found in, well, she's found in 3-3
- 10:47different gospels, but I focused mostly on the one in Luke, Luke
- 10:50chapter 8. And this is the woman I'm
- 10:53you're, I'm sure you're familiar, the the incredible
- 10:57woman who had been afflicted for 12 years and then reached out in
- 11:01desperation and touched the cloak of Jesus and received
- 11:05immediate healing. And honestly, Jamie, that was a
- 11:08story I had heard several times. I'd read it several times
- 11:12throughout my life. But it wasn't until I really
- 11:16spent that intentional time imagining myself in the scene,
- 11:21imagining myself and her position, doing my own research
- 11:26about the culture and the themes and the nuances of the day that
- 11:30helped me to understand her experience to a deeper level,
- 11:35that it, it just really resonated with me and absolutely
- 11:40transformed my heart in so many different ways.
- 11:45And so then later it it ended up turning into this book.
- 11:49Yes, no, I absolutely love it. I was able to read some of it
- 11:54and I love how you bring us in to her perspective and what she
- 12:00was feeling and it's it really makes things that encounter that
- 12:08we're talking about that heart encounter with the Lord and
- 12:11bringing us on this personal level.
- 12:14I do this by personalizing scripture verse.
- 12:17I, I bring myself in a scripture verse by putting my name or I or
- 12:21me and making it personal. And a lot of times as you're
- 12:26speaking, actually, I, I'm thinking about myself and how
- 12:30I'm reading the Bible. And it's so true.
- 12:33How many times I actually placed myself there, like as if I'm,
- 12:38you know, an actual eyewitness there in the scene and how much
- 12:43more of that story just gets colored and comes alive and, and
- 12:47it hits you in a personal way. So I absolutely love the, the
- 12:52structure of this book. It's really neat.
- 12:55And so one of the phrases you say is deep calls to deep.
- 13:02So a lot of us feel like it's easier to be staying on the
- 13:07surface with our faith. So other than immersing
- 13:13ourselves in the Word, what helps us to dive deeper into a
- 13:17connection with God? But also, why do we stay in this
- 13:23kind of safe zone? I should say it just the surface
- 13:27level and we don't end up getting deeper.
- 13:31Because I remember there was a moment just like you where it
- 13:34was like I wanted more of God there.
- 13:36I mean, he was pursuing my heart and I'm pursuing him.
- 13:40And so I love hearing that you had that same experience.
- 13:47Yeah, great. I think, I think it's different
- 13:51for everyone. Of course it's easy for us to
- 13:55stay on the surface for so many reasons.
- 13:59And and I'm a visual, a very visual person.
- 14:01And of course, the deep cost to deep is from David and one of
- 14:07his Psalms and and that that intimate soul level call or pull
- 14:16that is can only be fulfilled by connecting with God at his soul
- 14:22level. And I just, I love that imagery
- 14:27so much. And so when I thought about that
- 14:31and I sat with that verse in particular for a bit, like you
- 14:34were saying, like, what, what is it?
- 14:37Why is God calling me into a deeper connection with him?
- 14:42And again, what's been hindering me?
- 14:46And so then I started thinking about pole noodles.
- 14:49You know how you might grasp, right?
- 14:52I love I read this in your book and I wanted to talk about this,
- 14:56so I'm so glad you're starting to talk.
- 14:57About the pool noodles. Yeah, yeah, because.
- 15:00I, you know, I, when I have these visual things in my mind,
- 15:04it's easier for me to grasp it and to understand a little bit
- 15:07more. But you know, you imagine if
- 15:08you're, if you want to go swimming and you just have this
- 15:11arm full of pool noodles and you try to dive deep, you're not
- 15:15going to be able to that it's going to resist and you're going
- 15:18to be constantly pushed back up to the surface.
- 15:21And so it I think we can sit and just ponder a bit like what are
- 15:25our pool noodles? What are the things that are
- 15:27keeping us on that surface level when we know we are designed for
- 15:32more. We know that God did not send
- 15:35his son for us to stay on the surface.
- 15:38He did not go to the cross for us to stay on the surface.
- 15:42And so I think it takes us to that intentionality to sit in
- 15:47his presence and to really be brave enough to examine what are
- 15:51the things in my heart or in my life and my schedule that is
- 15:56keeping me on the surface. And I think, you know, one of
- 16:00them is, is as simple as busyness.
- 16:03You know, I know I've heard, I've heard you talk about that
- 16:07on your podcast too. It's just, it's so easy for us
- 16:11to compartmentalize everything and to think, OK, this is my
- 16:16time with God and maybe it's even 5 minutes.
- 16:19I would rather have 5 deep minutes with him than an hour of
- 16:24shallow with him. And so, but again, I, I think
- 16:29our schedule, it's busyness. It's I think sometimes another
- 16:34pole noodle for us. It's, it's fear.
- 16:38It's that fear of if I do dive deep with him, what might get
- 16:44exposed that I need to deal with.
- 16:49And that's an alleged that's a legitimate fear.
- 16:53And usually we already know the answer if we're if we're pausing
- 16:57and asking that question. And so if you, if you consider
- 17:02that pull noodle, then you, you start, at least I know I started
- 17:06to examine another pull noodle of doubt.
- 17:10It's self doubt. It's that doubt of am I capable?
- 17:15Am I worth it? Am I valuable enough to him to
- 17:20peel back some of those layers and get even deeper, more
- 17:23intimate with him? And I think there's also there's
- 17:27some God doubt is, is he safe? Does he love me enough?
- 17:33Is he going to meet me there if I dive in and and really try to
- 17:38connect with him, could there be a fear there that that he's not
- 17:43going to meet me there? He's going to meet other people
- 17:46because they're more spiritual or they're more worth it or he
- 17:49loves them more. And there's those little bitty
- 17:52fears and insecurities and lies that I believe keep us on that
- 17:55surface level. Yeah, that's good.
- 17:58I I look at all those hindrances and the root of it all are just
- 18:04enemy attacks. Absolutely.
- 18:06Spirit of fear, enemy attack, doubt.
- 18:10If you're doubting, then there's the faith, isn't there?
- 18:14Right. And so it ain't.
- 18:17Let's see. Oh, the busyness that you said.
- 18:19Right. And this is interesting because
- 18:24I found that you could be doing good things like you were doing
- 18:28good things at your church. You're serving the Lord.
- 18:32But what was missing was just the being with him and taking
- 18:39that time out in that quiet time because we could get so busy and
- 18:45doing those good things in the ministry or your local church or
- 18:49community or even PTA like the school.
- 18:53Your child's involved and they're all good things, but
- 18:56what the enemy does is he'll he'll use not necessarily bad
- 19:01things, but he could use the good things to keep you away
- 19:05from God's best. So true.
- 19:07God's better, right? So, you know, just being
- 19:12cautiously aware of that will help and being intentional.
- 19:16When I, when I heard that years ago, that totally changed my way
- 19:20because I'm naturally a doer, You know, I, I love that verse
- 19:25and James, don't be just hearers, but be doers of the
- 19:29word, You know, don't just only be hearers of the word, but be
- 19:32doers. And so I love how can we apply
- 19:36scripture to our lives? How can we walk it, live it,
- 19:40speak it, do it, all of that. So I have to be careful that I'm
- 19:46not, you know, constantly doing this doing and not putting in
- 19:51the time to actually being. Absolutely, yeah.
- 19:56You don't want to be so wrapped up and doing for him that you're
- 19:59not spending that time with him and that it's not then your your
- 20:05actions are coming from a dry place and they're not out of
- 20:09that abundance of that time with him.
- 20:12It's a danger zone because in your heart posture you're
- 20:16getting burnt out because it's not in the right posture, you
- 20:21know, or you, you sway from serving the Lord to now you're
- 20:26serving man. And it's, yeah, it could go
- 20:31through a spiral. And then you added the pool
- 20:34noodle of anger and insecurity and misconception.
- 20:42So I think you know anger again. You know we're talking about the
- 20:48bad anger, not righteous anger. Right.
- 20:51Yeah, the anger that will lead to sin, right?
- 20:54And and the insecurity. So all those things, just really
- 21:00the root of it all is just the enemy coming at you.
- 21:05It is because you know he's not threatened.
- 21:07The enemy is not threatened when we stay on the surface.
- 21:11He's not frightened by our lukewarm Christianity.
- 21:14He's he is perfectly at peace. So just leave us floating on our
- 21:18pole noodles because he knows that our heart transformation
- 21:23doesn't actually take root until we go deeper.
- 21:26That's right, until we are able to release some of those pole
- 21:29noodles, some of the lies, some of the emotions, some of the
- 21:32pain that may be keeping us from really connecting with our
- 21:37Heavenly Father in a way that is transformative and not just for
- 21:41information. Yes, yes, absolutely.
- 21:45And my password said a while back, you know, it's the when
- 21:50you get the revelation of the word, that's where the
- 21:53transformation happens. That's when you know your life
- 21:57has changed is when you really get the revelation.
- 22:01How do we get the revelation by, you know, really soaking
- 22:04ourselves. Like you were saying you
- 22:06meditated on these passages, you know, meditate on these
- 22:10scriptures and let it really take root in your life.
- 22:13And we do that revelation by acting it out, you know, living
- 22:19it out, walking it out, not just read it for information,
- 22:23actually apply it to our lives. But when we, when we get these
- 22:29insights and the understanding and this wisdom from the word,
- 22:34just like your story with the woman with the issue of blood
- 22:37just came alive to you. You've read that scripture over
- 22:40and over again. Happens to me too.
- 22:42I'll read something, I'm like, Oh my gosh, I've never seen it
- 22:46in this way. I've never seen this story in
- 22:48this way. But that's how the Holy Spirit
- 22:50speaks to us through his Word and and we get that revelation
- 22:56now, that revelation, we're having this relationship with
- 22:59this fellowship. With God, right?
- 23:01Yes. And it just ignites that holy
- 23:04hunger. Yes.
- 23:06That just is isn't that strange type of hunger that never fully
- 23:11gets satisfied because the more you feed it, the more you want
- 23:15it. And and it is it's I love that.
- 23:18I love that word from your pastor at the with the
- 23:20revelation because it's, it really is.
- 23:23It's, it's, it's feels so divine, so spiritually LED that
- 23:29it, it's like this light bulb just goes off and you think,
- 23:33I've never seen it this way before and it's just such a
- 23:37gift. Yeah, Yeah, it really is.
- 23:40So what would you like this listener to know?
- 23:44Anything more from this book that you would like to share
- 23:47that I haven't asked you? Sure.
- 23:50Oh well, there's so many pieces I think would love for each and
- 23:54every reader when when they close that last page is to
- 24:01realize kind of like what we've been talking about that that
- 24:05Scripture is so infinite. And I never would have thought
- 24:11taking these six or 7-8 verses out of Luke, this one small
- 24:17short encounter that really was an interruption of what Jesus
- 24:20was doing it because he was on his way to to heal another one
- 24:24of his daughters when she interrupted him.
- 24:27Is that there's so much more there.
- 24:31There's always more there. And the more we do take this
- 24:35intentional time to just sit and, and go deeper, the more
- 24:40we're going to find that those revelations that are about his
- 24:46character and nature, but also about our own and out about our
- 24:49identity. You know, there's this one scene
- 24:52or one piece of the scene when she has reached out and touched
- 24:56him. And then Luke tells us that she
- 24:59knows she is immediately healed. And Jesus turns around and says,
- 25:03who touched me? And there's this awkward pause,
- 25:07you know, in, in the scene and, and everyone's kind of looking
- 25:11around because he tells us that the crowd is very thick.
- 25:15And Peter, of course, because Peter's always the one that's
- 25:19going to blur the things out for us.
- 25:21Thank goodness. He says, well, Lord, everyone is
- 25:25pushing in on you. Many people are touching you.
- 25:29And Jesus, his response was, no, someone deliberately touched me
- 25:34because I felt healing power go out of me.
- 25:37And again, when you sit in that scene, it's when it occurred to
- 25:41me that there were people that were touching him but were not
- 25:45changed. And I had to sit and ask myself,
- 25:49am I living in close proximity to Jesus or am I reaching out in
- 25:56desperation for transformation? And they're two very different
- 26:00things. And it's kind of like what you
- 26:02were saying earlier, are we, are we going through the motions?
- 26:05Are we doing all the right things?
- 26:08But yet are we not being changed at our core more and more into
- 26:14the image of Jesus along the way?
- 26:18And if we're not, that's a great revelation to have.
- 26:22We have to give ourselves grace and be kind to ourselves and
- 26:26just simply take some of those questions into the presence of
- 26:29God and ask Him to make us so sensitive to our own
- 26:33self-awareness. Like, OK, why am I saying yes to
- 26:36this ask? Is this something that I feel
- 26:41like you are calling me to do? Is this a way that you are
- 26:44wanting me to love you and to love your Kingdom and expand
- 26:47your name and glorify your name? Or am I doing this out of
- 26:52obligation? Am I doing this because I'm
- 26:54trying to please people? Am I doing this because it's is
- 26:57it prideful and I want the recognition?
- 26:59So it, it, it's that constant recognition and, and raising our
- 27:06sensitivities and our awareness of his constant presence in our
- 27:09lives, not just simply, you know, the few minutes that we
- 27:12might try to carve out, you know, that we think this is
- 27:15specifically the time that I have for him, but it's nonstop.
- 27:20Yeah, absolutely. Yeah, it is non-stop.
- 27:22It's fellowshipping with him throughout the day.
- 27:27I I mean, I heard a while back about we received the
- 27:31relationship with the Lord at salvation, but then there's the
- 27:36fellowshipping. So there's a difference between
- 27:39our relationship that we have and then the actual
- 27:42fellowshipping with the Lord and that's when we get to know him
- 27:47more. More is in that fellowshipping
- 27:50with him. You know, we, we are all on a
- 27:53journey, Yeah. And it's, it's just such a
- 27:56delight to be able to connect with other women and hear and be
- 28:00inspired by how God is connecting with them and hearing
- 28:04about their own stories. And that's really, I think
- 28:08that's what I enjoyed so much about writing this book is that
- 28:13it really is about bringing her story to life, even though it
- 28:17was 2000 years ago, to recognize her and see her, even though we
- 28:22don't know her name, to give her that dignity and respect and
- 28:27honor her story. And, you know, recognizing the
- 28:32transformation and the healing that she received that went
- 28:35beyond the physical. And that's one of the things
- 28:38that that I loved about seeing in this story too, is that when
- 28:42she received that physical healing, she received emotional
- 28:48healing, her identity was restored.
- 28:51She was now free for relational healing because she could be
- 28:54welcomed back into success and back into societies because she
- 28:58was no longer unclean. And I think the greatest message
- 29:04from that entire story was just some of the irony that we see in
- 29:08the symbolism that ultimately she was eternally and
- 29:15spiritually healed by the blood of Jesus.
- 29:20This beautiful woman that was afflicted with this issue of
- 29:24blood was essentially ultimately forever, eternally healed by the
- 29:29blood of Jesus. And it just doesn't get any
- 29:31better than that. And, and we can all connect with
- 29:35her story and in so many different ways.
- 29:38Yes, we've all been healed by the blood of Jesus trying to get
- 29:41on the cross for us. So beautiful Amy.
