Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Good afternoon, everybody. Welcome to the program here on AM
- 0:03Speaker 1: thirteen under the Zone. My name is Craig Way. Glad
- 0:06Speaker 1: to have you with us and very pleased to be
- 0:09Speaker 1: with you in the if you will out of doors,
- 0:14Speaker 1: so to speak, because the scene is UFCU dish falk Field.
- 0:21Speaker 1: So we're here at the ballpark at UFCU dish falk Field.
- 0:25Speaker 2: And tonight what a ball game.
- 0:27Speaker 1: What a matchup for the Texas Loghorns, who will be
- 0:30Speaker 1: in action and they will be taking on the number
- 0:35Speaker 1: one team in the country. It depends on the poll
- 0:37Speaker 1: because there's a couple of different poles, but one of
- 0:41Speaker 1: the polls has one SEC team in it as the
- 0:43Speaker 1: number one team in the country, and a couple of
- 0:46Speaker 1: the others have the other.
- 0:47Speaker 2: SC team C team.
- 0:49Speaker 1: The two teams that I'm speaking of are LSU and Tennessee.
- 0:53Speaker 1: LSU is number one in one of the polls and
- 0:57Speaker 1: number two in the others. Tennessee is number two and
- 1:01Speaker 1: one one and number one in the others. Now that
- 1:03Speaker 1: might change. Tennessee lost its series opener to Alabama last
- 1:07Speaker 1: night in Tuscaloosa, but the Tigers are here to take
- 1:11Speaker 1: on the Texas Loghorns, and of course we'll have the
- 1:13Speaker 1: game for you this evening here on thirteen hundred the zone.
- 1:16Speaker 1: It'll come your way six forty five air time. It
- 1:19Speaker 1: is a seven o'clock first pitch. Normally, of course, Friday
- 1:23Speaker 1: night games here at UFCU dish Fogg Field are six
- 1:27Speaker 1: thirty first pitches, but this one is a seven o'clock
- 1:30Speaker 1: first pitch, so we'll be on the air at six
- 1:31Speaker 1: forty five and then the first pitch at seven o'clock.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Loghorns will have Jared Spencer going two and oh in
- 1:40Speaker 1: the two three six era and for LSU they're outstanding
- 1:44Speaker 1: left hand or Kate Anderson who is four and oh
- 1:47Speaker 1: and a two five seven earned run average.
- 1:49Speaker 2: So we have that for you tonight.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Joining us in the studio the producer of the program,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Cameron D.
- 1:55Speaker 2: Parker.
- 1:57Speaker 1: The D on the birth certificate stands for Dallas, but
- 2:00Speaker 1: of late it could have stood for Dayton or delayed
- 2:04Speaker 1: return to the area. But now Cameron is back in
- 2:08Speaker 1: the studio. How odd as well as comfortable must it
- 2:12Speaker 1: be right now to be back in the comfortable confines
- 2:16Speaker 1: of the iHeartMedia compound in Austin, Texas.
- 2:19Speaker 3: Well, you know, Craig I was thinking about it driving
- 2:23Speaker 3: in it's It's been probably two weeks since I was
- 2:27Speaker 3: in this studio. I did a Monday show, I think,
- 2:29Speaker 3: before I headed off to Greenville, South Carolina for the
- 2:33Speaker 3: women's SEC tournament.
- 2:35Speaker 2: So it's been quite some time.
- 2:37Speaker 3: I mean me and you, and we've been on the
- 2:38Speaker 3: road for pretty much a month, going back to the
- 2:41Speaker 3: women's trip to Starkville. Of course, the men's follow that
- 2:45Speaker 3: up the next week, and then I was in Greenville,
- 2:47Speaker 3: I know you were still here, and then went to Nashville,
- 2:49Speaker 3: and then we were in Dayton.
- 2:50Speaker 2: I mean, we had.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Twelve hour turnaround from watching this election show to leaving
- 2:56Speaker 3: on a plane for Dayton, Ohio. And unfortunately it did
- 2:59Speaker 3: not work out for the text Long Orange basketball team.
- 3:01Speaker 3: But it's good to be back. I forgot how bad
- 3:04Speaker 3: traffic is in this city. Three sixty right now going southbound.
- 3:09Speaker 3: Do not get on it. It's ridiculous. And I left
- 3:11Speaker 3: my headphones at my house, so a little rust I
- 3:15Speaker 3: need to knock off a little rusty here, Craig.
- 3:17Speaker 2: But glad to be back with you. Yeah. He also
- 3:19Speaker 2: left out the fact I was.
- 3:20Speaker 1: In Starkville last baseball we get after that, we had
- 3:24Speaker 1: baseball over there. When the long Warts had their three
- 3:27Speaker 1: game weekend series sweep Mississippi State there in Starkville. So
- 3:33Speaker 1: now back home, log Worts had their seventeen game winning
- 3:36Speaker 1: streak snapped on Tuesday night and twelve innings by UTSA,
- 3:40Speaker 1: they lost that ball game. So there's seventeen and two
- 3:42Speaker 1: going into the game and LSU was twenty one and
- 3:45Speaker 1: one coming in.
- 3:46Speaker 2: So this this will be a really.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Good test for the Longhorns, no question about it, coming
- 3:51Speaker 1: up this afternoon, but there's so many other things to
- 3:52Speaker 1: get to and certainly we'll discuss by the way, we
- 3:56Speaker 1: will talk from college baseball in the three o'clock hour
- 4:00Speaker 1: with our colleague Ty Harrington, who is working on the
- 4:06Speaker 1: Texas Studios SEC Network Plus telecast of Longhorn baseball games.
- 4:12Speaker 1: He won't be working tonight's game. In fact, tonight, our
- 4:15Speaker 1: own Keith Moreland will pair up with the LSU legend
- 4:18Speaker 1: Ben McDonald to work that telecaster. Roger Wallaso joined me
- 4:21Speaker 1: for the radio broadcast of the game here on the Zone,
- 4:25Speaker 1: but Ty will join us in the three o'clock hour,
- 4:28Speaker 1: right around three fifteen to talks some college baseball and
- 4:31Speaker 1: where things are here in the early stages now that
- 4:34Speaker 1: everybody's in the conference play. It started a little quicker
- 4:37Speaker 1: for the SEC than it did for some other leagues,
- 4:41Speaker 1: but everybody's starting to play because they're playing more conference
- 4:45Speaker 1: games now as a result of that. So as a
- 4:49Speaker 1: result of that, that's why you're seeing more and more
- 4:53Speaker 1: conference games per leagues, because they're just adding more teams
- 4:56Speaker 1: and so they're starting conference play. They're having to start
- 4:59Speaker 1: conference play a little bit earlier as a result of that.
- 5:02Speaker 1: So anyway, we'll talk college baseball with Tye Harrington in
- 5:06Speaker 1: the three o'clock hour, four o'clock hour some major League baseball.
- 5:09Speaker 1: We are just about we're one week out from the
- 5:16Speaker 1: start of the Major League Baseball season for every team
- 5:22Speaker 1: not named the Dodgers or the Cubs, because they played
- 5:24Speaker 1: their two games in Japan this week, but then they
- 5:28Speaker 1: come back and then next week everybody begins play. So
- 5:32Speaker 1: we'll talk to some major League baseball with Jean Watson.
- 5:34Speaker 1: But of course we've got March Madness to discuss. It's
- 5:39Speaker 1: already been action underway. Baylor survives in advances to the
- 5:43Speaker 1: second round, defeating Mississippi State in an eight nine matchup
- 5:46Speaker 1: seventy five to seventy two. And in all probability they're
- 5:51Speaker 1: going to face the Duke Blue Devils, Duke getting ready
- 5:53Speaker 1: to take on Mount Saint Mary's. Alabama really got pushed
- 5:58Speaker 1: the number two seed and they were reaching, really got
- 6:01Speaker 1: pushed by Mount Saint Mary's, I mean, excuse me, by
- 6:04Speaker 1: Robert Morris, and they did eventually prevail. They pulled away
- 6:09Speaker 1: to win ninety to eighty one. So there was a
- 6:11Speaker 1: close call there, but Alabama was able to go out.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And there are other games getting ready to start, and
- 6:15Speaker 1: we'll keep you updated on that. Obviously, the long worn
- 6:17Speaker 1: season has drawn to its conclusion, and I know a
- 6:23Speaker 1: lot of folks probably are interested in discussing the future
- 6:27Speaker 1: of the program and who will be leading the program
- 6:30Speaker 1: in the future. You know, there's been no word. Everything
- 6:35Speaker 1: has been quiet from the UT campus, and I would
- 6:38Speaker 1: have expected it to be that way for a number
- 6:39Speaker 1: of reasons, one of those being that Rodney Terry and
- 6:44Speaker 1: Crystal Comfy have not even had a chance to meet yet,
- 6:46Speaker 1: or if they did, maybe this morning, but didn't have
- 6:49Speaker 1: a chance to meet through yesterday. We didn't get back
- 6:52Speaker 1: with the basketball team until late afternoon yesterday. What was
- 6:56Speaker 1: it cam about five point thirty when wheels touched down
- 7:00Speaker 1: at the airport. And that's because in the NCAA tournament,
- 7:06Speaker 1: you are at the travel convenience or inconvenience, depending on
- 7:12Speaker 1: your point of view of the NCAA and its travel companion,
- 7:18Speaker 1: its travel agency that arranges the flights and the planes
- 7:21Speaker 1: and all that sort of stuff. And even though they
- 7:24Speaker 1: knew that there would be two teams going home on
- 7:28Speaker 1: Thursday morning, which turned out to be American University in Texas,
- 7:33Speaker 1: they only had one plane available. And as a result
- 7:40Speaker 1: of that, because American had the earlier flight and a
- 7:44Speaker 1: closer distance to travel, they got to fly home first,
- 7:47Speaker 1: and so everybody to wait for the plane to come
- 7:49Speaker 1: back and then pick up the long Horns and take
- 7:51Speaker 1: them home. So we were not wheels up from Dayton
- 7:54Speaker 1: until about think about three little after three three fifteen
- 7:59Speaker 1: something like that yesterday afternoon, and did not touch back
- 8:03Speaker 1: down at Austin until five point thirty. So there were
- 8:06Speaker 1: no meetings, I'm pretty sure yesterday. So there would be
- 8:10Speaker 1: conversations and meetings and things like that going forward for
- 8:15Speaker 1: the state of the men's basketball program. And there are
- 8:19Speaker 1: many reasons. Let me just put it to you this way,
- 8:21Speaker 1: and I don't really know. Obviously I'm not privy to
- 8:24Speaker 1: conversations and things, but I would tell you this that
- 8:29Speaker 1: no matter how you feel about the direction of the
- 8:32Speaker 1: program or the current coaching staff or whatever, there are
- 8:36Speaker 1: a lot of things, a lot of factors that will
- 8:39Speaker 1: go into determining what the direction of the program is
- 8:43Speaker 1: and who will be leading it in the future. Yes,
- 8:46Speaker 1: by and large, a lot of it is financial, but
- 8:48Speaker 1: not all of it, so there are other things.
- 8:50Speaker 2: There are other factors involved in this.
- 8:52Speaker 1: So this may take a little longer than some folks
- 8:56Speaker 1: think it should or would or could appearance that that
- 9:01Speaker 1: it could that it that it might take a little
- 9:03Speaker 1: longer because there there are things that have to be
- 9:06Speaker 1: discussed and arrangements and all sorts of things. So that's
- 9:09Speaker 1: that's about all we know right now. We don't know
- 9:11Speaker 1: anything else. I understand all of the speculation, the reports
- 9:18Speaker 1: that have come out, especially from the fan driven sites
- 9:22Speaker 1: as well as the newspaper sites and things of that nature.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I get all of that, and I understand the work
- 9:31Speaker 1: that those individuals who work for those agencies and sites,
- 9:40Speaker 1: the amount of responsibility they have in terms of turning
- 9:45Speaker 1: out content and what they think is going to happen.
- 9:50Speaker 1: So there are things that have to be written and
- 9:53Speaker 1: published and put out on social media. There are things
- 9:57Speaker 1: to do that whether anything has happened or not with
- 10:01Speaker 1: regard to the university. But those those individuals who have
- 10:06Speaker 1: to report and write things, you know, they have their
- 10:10Speaker 1: own deadlines, and they have the pieces that they're responsible
- 10:14Speaker 1: and content they are responsible for creating. So some of those,
- 10:20Speaker 1: if not the vast majority of those pieces, might be
- 10:25Speaker 1: more opinion and speculation driven, you know, than normal as
- 10:33Speaker 1: a result, because they've got people telling them, Hey, I
- 10:36Speaker 1: need a story, and blah blah blah, where do you
- 10:38Speaker 1: think it's going to go?
- 10:38Speaker 2: Just write down what you think is going to happen.
- 10:41Speaker 1: And so that's that's where a lot of that content
- 10:44Speaker 1: is surfacing right now. Obviously we'll all find out, you know,
- 10:49Speaker 1: in short order, what the direction of the program is
- 10:51Speaker 1: and things of that nature, and everybody will go ahead
- 10:53Speaker 1: and print those things and write those things and publish
- 10:55Speaker 1: those things at the appropriate times. But if you're wondering
- 10:59Speaker 1: why you haven't seen anything else in terms of concrete,
- 11:02Speaker 1: like I said, there are a lot of things to
- 11:03Speaker 1: be worked through, and then even beyond that, there's there's
- 11:07Speaker 1: other elements and considerations involved. So anyway, just wanted to
- 11:11Speaker 1: put that out there. That's that's where things are, and
- 11:14Speaker 1: that we don't know anything else, and when we do,
- 11:16Speaker 1: we'll certainly let you know. All right, We've got a
- 11:18Speaker 1: lot of things to get to on the program, will
- 11:19Speaker 1: update the NCAA tournament scoreboard for you. We do have inconceivable.
- 11:26Speaker 1: We do have inconceivable on a Friday, Cameron Parker. We
- 11:29Speaker 1: have inconceivable on a Friday. You know what that means.
- 11:31Speaker 4: Man.
- 11:31Speaker 3: It's been a long time, but I still remember we
- 11:35Speaker 3: traveled to the more flaccid of the lower forty eight
- 11:39Speaker 3: states and reach for that low hanging fruit.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Baby.
- 11:41Speaker 1: We've got a couple of low hanging stories of felicidity
- 11:44Speaker 1: to bring you. So we'll have that with Florida man
- 11:48Speaker 1: coming up in that. In that end, we also have
- 11:51Speaker 1: our junk food Fast. I've got a story that will
- 11:55Speaker 1: interest certainly Cameron Parker, if not others me as well.
- 12:00Speaker 1: So we'll get to that, and like I said, we'll
- 12:03Speaker 1: talk from college baseball in the three o'clock hour, we'll
- 12:07Speaker 1: visit with Ty Harrington Geene Watson to join us to
- 12:09Speaker 1: talk major league baseball. On the four o'clock. We'll keep
- 12:11Speaker 1: you updated on the basketball. It is a Friday and
- 12:14Speaker 1: we're happy to have.
- 12:15Speaker 2: You with us.
- 12:15Speaker 1: We're also going to obviously preview the Texas women in
- 12:19Speaker 1: the NCAA tournament. Their tournament journey starts tomorrow night, and
- 12:24Speaker 1: I was at the playing game, if you will, the
- 12:27Speaker 1: first four game last night between High Point and William
- 12:30Speaker 1: and Mary to see who would win and would play Texas.
- 12:34Speaker 1: We'll talk about that and a lot more here on
- 12:37Speaker 1: this Friday afternoon at UFCU Dish Fronkfield here on AM
- 12:40Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone. Thing I forgot about is Cameron's
- 12:43Speaker 1: fire me Up Friday. So that's why you're getting fired
- 12:46Speaker 1: up with a little bit of Fleetwood Mac there to
- 12:49Speaker 1: start us off with on a Friday afternoon.
- 12:50Speaker 2: Correct, exactly right, you know.
- 12:52Speaker 3: It's a little bit of fire me up slash feel
- 12:54Speaker 3: good Friday. And hey, as you mentioned, Craig, it's what
- 12:57Speaker 3: seventy five degrees outside us out Texas Baseball opens up
- 13:02Speaker 3: Southeastern Conference to play the night at the dish.
- 13:05Speaker 2: It's a feel good Friday for sure. Yeah.
- 13:07Speaker 1: First ever SEC Conference home series for Taxis. Of course,
- 13:13Speaker 1: they had their first ever SEC Conference series period on
- 13:17Speaker 1: the road last weekend, opening up with the three game
- 13:20Speaker 1: weekend series sweep of the Mississippi State Bulldogs. But this
- 13:26Speaker 1: will be their first ever UMSERS and what a time
- 13:28Speaker 1: for it against a team that's number one in a
- 13:30Speaker 1: couple of poles and number two in a couple of poles.
- 13:32Speaker 2: LSU coming into town.
- 13:34Speaker 1: All right, we'll get to all of that, but we
- 13:36Speaker 1: wanted to bring you some of the news conferences that
- 13:39Speaker 1: happened just a little bit ago over at Moody Center
- 13:43Speaker 1: previewing the Texas Women's NCAA Tournament. They're the number one
- 13:47Speaker 1: seed in what's called Birmingham three Regional, meaning they're the
- 13:52Speaker 1: number three seed overall, and they're going to play the
- 13:55Speaker 1: Tribe of William and Mary. Head coach Vick Schaeffer was
- 13:58Speaker 1: sitting there the Scouts area press row along with assistant
- 14:02Speaker 1: coaches Lindsay Wisdom, Hilton, and also Sydney Carter, and had
- 14:08Speaker 1: the players. A lot of the players were there taking
- 14:10Speaker 1: in the game last night. So here's part of it.
- 14:12Speaker 1: We'll bring you the rest of it later, but here's
- 14:15Speaker 1: a part of the press conference with long WRNS head
- 14:17Speaker 1: coach Bick Schaeffer.
- 14:19Speaker 5: Coach, congratulations for your successes today, and if you would
- 14:23Speaker 5: like to start with an opening statement.
- 14:25Speaker 2: We'd love to hear from you.
- 14:26Speaker 6: Well, first, I'm going to congratulate you and thank you
- 14:29Speaker 6: for your service to women's basketball.
- 14:32Speaker 2: I know this is your final year correct.
- 14:36Speaker 5: Of full time employment. I'm playing it rewirement coach, so
- 14:39Speaker 5: I will still be around.
- 14:40Speaker 6: Okay, Well, congratulations, and again, thank you for all you've
- 14:43Speaker 6: done for our great game. And I hope you have
- 14:46Speaker 6: a great This is the last go round for the
- 14:50Speaker 6: NCAA tournament. I hope you have a great experience here
- 14:52Speaker 6: in Austin.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Appreciated coach.
- 14:54Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, Just to start, I'd like to congratulate Dickerson
- 15:00Speaker 6: Davis and her team as well as High Point. What
- 15:04Speaker 6: a great game that was last night. You know, two
- 15:08Speaker 6: teams that really competed at a very high level. You know, again,
- 15:14Speaker 6: I think y'all have heard me say this. My local
- 15:18Speaker 6: media has heard me say this. The thing about this
- 15:19Speaker 6: time of years, you've got to get hot, and you've
- 15:22Speaker 6: got to get got to have a little luck. Well,
- 15:25Speaker 6: and William and Mary's really hot. I mean they're playing
- 15:28Speaker 6: so well, and coach has done a great job with him,
- 15:34Speaker 6: her and her staff. They're playing at a very high level.
- 15:38Speaker 6: So we certainly they have our attention, and so finally,
- 15:44Speaker 6: I guess today we finally know who we're going to play,
- 15:47Speaker 6: and so we'll have a much more specific defensive practice
- 15:51Speaker 6: today than than we have had. We've had to kind
- 15:55Speaker 6: of cover two different teams, and I'll even go back
- 15:58Speaker 6: to high point bore. They are way different than the
- 16:00Speaker 6: team we saw last year in the Virgin Islands, and
- 16:03Speaker 6: their coach and their staff have done a great job
- 16:07Speaker 6: I think with their team and their program as well.
- 16:10Speaker 6: So for our kids, you know, this is what we
- 16:14Speaker 6: work for, and what a great opportunity. So proud of
- 16:18Speaker 6: them to be able to host to play in front
- 16:21Speaker 6: of our fans. I think I've been told we have
- 16:23Speaker 6: three hundred tickets left for tomorrow night, which is outstanding.
- 16:27Speaker 6: Just want to praise our community and our people here
- 16:30Speaker 6: at the university for their efforts in.
- 16:35Speaker 2: You know, promoting and supporting our kids.
- 16:39Speaker 6: I mean, as I've said all along, if I can
- 16:41Speaker 6: get you to come one time, I think you'll be back.
- 16:44Speaker 7: And I think that's what's happened, especially with this team.
- 16:47Speaker 6: They're such great kids, they have great personalities, they play
- 16:51Speaker 6: the game the right way, They honor the game, they
- 16:53Speaker 6: respect the game, and so again the gauntlet that they've
- 16:58Speaker 6: gone through to be thirty one in three. You know,
- 17:03Speaker 6: I don't have time to pay attention to what everybody thinks.
- 17:06Speaker 6: I get phone calls or texts all the time from
- 17:08Speaker 6: friends going, well, so and so saved that said this,
- 17:11Speaker 6: and so and so said that, and I don't really
- 17:14Speaker 6: have a lot of energy, time or effort to put
- 17:17Speaker 6: any credence in that. All I'm going to tell you
- 17:19Speaker 6: is I live in the Southeastern Conference. That is a really,
- 17:23Speaker 6: really tough In my opinion, it's the biggest, baddest conference
- 17:27Speaker 6: in the country. We have to play the best of
- 17:30Speaker 6: the best every night and for us to survive that gauntlet,
- 17:34Speaker 6: and they have gone through it the way that we've
- 17:36Speaker 6: done it against some of the best players in all
- 17:39Speaker 6: of college basketball.
- 17:41Speaker 7: To be where we are.
- 17:42Speaker 6: We've lost two games in the state of South Carolina
- 17:46Speaker 6: and one game in overtime at Notre Dame. And I
- 17:50Speaker 6: say that to say this, my kids are tough.
- 17:55Speaker 2: I'm proud of them.
- 17:56Speaker 6: I'm excited about the opportunity that we have, and they've
- 18:00Speaker 6: worked really, really hard to get to this moment. So
- 18:03Speaker 6: as I've tried to encourage them. You don't want to
- 18:06Speaker 6: take things for granted. We've worked really hard to be
- 18:09Speaker 6: in the position we're in, but you know, now's the
- 18:13Speaker 6: time to not lose focus, and so I'm sure they'll
- 18:17Speaker 6: be focused again today and very intentional with how we
- 18:21Speaker 6: work out.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Thank you, coach.
- 18:23Speaker 5: Our first question here in Austin will come from Jim
- 18:25Speaker 5: Ratuna of the Associated Press.
- 18:27Speaker 2: Jim, coach, you.
- 18:28Speaker 8: Talked about how you're going to have a specific defensive
- 18:31Speaker 8: specific practice today. I want to talk about Rory as
- 18:35Speaker 8: a defender a little bit.
- 18:37Speaker 7: Not bad issue.
- 18:38Speaker 8: Well, describe her for me as as a defender and
- 18:42Speaker 8: what she gives you game in and game out.
- 18:44Speaker 6: You know, I'm so glad you asked me that. You know,
- 18:47Speaker 6: she's up for the National Defensive Player of the Year
- 18:50Speaker 6: and I'd again not taken anything from anybody else in
- 18:55Speaker 6: the country, but nobody.
- 18:58Speaker 7: I'm telling you, I look at this kid every day.
- 19:00Speaker 6: I've coached some great, great players in my time, some
- 19:04Speaker 6: great defenders. Rory Harmon's the best I've ever coached. She's
- 19:10Speaker 6: not only great on the ball, she's a great help defender,
- 19:14Speaker 6: and she's a great seiler. She takes away driving lanes
- 19:19Speaker 6: while still being able to cover out on her own player.
- 19:25Speaker 6: I look at her every day and again, I've had
- 19:29Speaker 6: some really really good defenders in my day, but she
- 19:32Speaker 6: does so many things well. And again, what she does
- 19:38Speaker 6: on that end and the impact that she has on
- 19:41Speaker 6: our team, and she'll take a charge, she'll get run
- 19:43Speaker 6: over by freight train, but then she does what I
- 19:46Speaker 6: want her to do on the other end, which is
- 19:48Speaker 6: go run my team, make a big shot, make a
- 19:52Speaker 6: great decision.
- 19:55Speaker 2: And so again.
- 19:58Speaker 6: I'm just telling you she's really really special, and she's
- 20:02Speaker 6: really good on the ball, off the ball.
- 20:06Speaker 2: She's just got it all.
- 20:07Speaker 6: And I know there's some really good defenders across the country,
- 20:11Speaker 6: but man, I look at it every day. I'm telling
- 20:14Speaker 6: you she impacts our our team on that end of
- 20:18Speaker 6: the floor so well.
- 20:21Speaker 7: And you know what she does it because she plays
- 20:23Speaker 7: her guts out.
- 20:25Speaker 6: And again, you show me somebody else that picks up
- 20:29Speaker 6: ninety four feet every night, does what she does and
- 20:33Speaker 6: then goes and runs their team on the other end
- 20:35Speaker 6: and is accountable on that end with her, with her
- 20:37Speaker 6: coach and her team, and we can talk.
- 20:42Speaker 5: Next question comes from Dennis delly Painted from Fox Sports.
- 20:45Speaker 9: Hey, coach, you know you talked earlier on Selection Sunday
- 20:49Speaker 9: about we need to be the hunter in this thing. Yeah,
- 20:51Speaker 9: because that you're definitely gonna be the hunted. Are you
- 20:54Speaker 9: seeing it? You know, Rory's a perfect example her mentality.
- 20:57Speaker 9: But when you're looking in your locker room and you're
- 20:59Speaker 9: seeing a bunch of hunters as you start this thing, you.
- 21:01Speaker 6: Know, it's funny you asked that because my thought for
- 21:04Speaker 6: the day today. You know, I pulled up a thing
- 21:10Speaker 6: and I've closed it out with we've got to get
- 21:14Speaker 6: our edge back. I thought we lost our edge in
- 21:16Speaker 6: the second quarter in the championship game, and we've got
- 21:21Speaker 6: to have that hunter's mentality. And so again I try
- 21:27Speaker 6: to help them keep that. It's kind of what I
- 21:31Speaker 6: feel like our job is as coaches to keep that
- 21:33Speaker 6: hunter's mentality. We know everybody's coming for us, but I
- 21:37Speaker 6: think you got to That's when I say you got
- 21:39Speaker 6: to keep an edge. That's the edge. The edge is
- 21:43Speaker 6: I'm coming for you, I'm hunting you. I'm not on
- 21:46Speaker 6: the defensive because you're coming after me. I thought we
- 21:49Speaker 6: got on our heels a little bit in that second quarter.
- 21:53Speaker 6: And again, you have to give South Carolina credit because
- 21:55Speaker 6: they make you feel that way a little bit and
- 21:57Speaker 6: then have fourteen thousand people screaming at you.
- 22:00Speaker 7: That'll get you even more, you know, on your heels.
- 22:01Speaker 6: But I think we got to have that because you know, again,
- 22:07Speaker 6: I don't have time to pay attention to all the pundits,
- 22:09Speaker 6: but you know, there's people that don't give us a
- 22:12Speaker 6: snowballs chance in hell, and that's okay.
- 22:14Speaker 7: I'm fine with that.
- 22:16Speaker 6: I've kind of lived with that a lot, and so
- 22:19Speaker 6: but I want my kids to embrace that, you know,
- 22:21Speaker 6: I want them to have an edge and take it
- 22:23Speaker 6: a little bit personal because it is for me. Again,
- 22:26Speaker 6: I know, thirty one and three in the Southeastern Conference,
- 22:30Speaker 6: with a schedule that we played in non conference, you
- 22:33Speaker 6: got to give me a break.
- 22:36Speaker 5: Next question from Sam Ferris fan sided Sam, Hey, coach.
- 22:40Speaker 10: Good to see you today. You only have three losses
- 22:43Speaker 10: on the season. That enough you can write the rest
- 22:45Speaker 10: of the year off and you have a bunch of success.
- 22:47Speaker 10: How do you keep your players motivated to keep winning,
- 22:49Speaker 10: to keep pushing farther and drive through the tournament?
- 22:52Speaker 6: Well, again, I think our kids see the bigger picture.
- 22:56Speaker 6: They know we're after a really big fish right now,
- 22:59Speaker 6: you know, so speak we're you know, we're not satisfied,
- 23:03Speaker 6: and my job is to help them not be satisfied
- 23:06Speaker 6: if they're feeling that way. Again, it is such a long,
- 23:09Speaker 6: hard grind living in the league we live in to
- 23:12Speaker 6: go through the schedule We've gone through, and it's easy
- 23:17Speaker 6: right now to again, your friends are on spring break,
- 23:20Speaker 6: they're skiing, they're at the beach. What are you doing.
- 23:23Speaker 6: You're sitting here in Austin, Texas. You're practicing a couple
- 23:25Speaker 6: hours a day, and and then what you know, So
- 23:28Speaker 6: it's easy to get kind of in that for some
- 23:31Speaker 6: of them.
- 23:31Speaker 7: I'm not telling you all of my kids are like that.
- 23:33Speaker 6: I got and so, but I think for us, I
- 23:39Speaker 6: think the overall mentality of my team right now is
- 23:41Speaker 6: and I've tried to remind them of this every day
- 23:44Speaker 6: for the last two weeks. We are good enough now again,
- 23:48Speaker 6: all it takes is one bad game. You know, we
- 23:51Speaker 6: had a bad game last year in the El Day.
- 23:53Speaker 6: That's the worst we had played in a long time.
- 23:55Speaker 6: Give in See State credit. I'm not taking anything from them,
- 23:59Speaker 6: but we picked up game to shoot it bad. We
- 24:02Speaker 6: had some really good looks in that game in the
- 24:04Speaker 6: first half that we didn't make that we've been making
- 24:07Speaker 6: all year long. This is not the time of year
- 24:10Speaker 6: to be playing bad. If you do, you're gonna get beat.
- 24:13Speaker 6: But so my message to them is, hey, we're good enough.
- 24:20Speaker 6: It'd be a shame to not give this our full
- 24:25Speaker 6: attention right now where your feet are live, right now,
- 24:29Speaker 6: in this moment, because this is not guaranteed.
- 24:32Speaker 7: I know we all take it for granted. It's what
- 24:35Speaker 7: we've done, it's what we've done in the past. We've
- 24:38Speaker 7: been here.
- 24:38Speaker 6: Before, YadA YadA, YadA, yah. It still doesn't matter. It's
- 24:42Speaker 6: not guaranteed. I think the crazy thing, or one of
- 24:47Speaker 6: the things you have to commend my team on is
- 24:51Speaker 6: it's two years in a row now that we've lost
- 24:53Speaker 6: a starter. This year we've lost potentially two starters in
- 24:57Speaker 6: Layla and liah Moore. Last year we Rory Harmon, and
- 25:01Speaker 6: yet my team, our kids, have been able to gather
- 25:06Speaker 6: up and figure out a way, along with my staff,
- 25:11Speaker 6: to go win thirty something games.
- 25:12Speaker 2: It's crazy. I'd like to get through.
- 25:15Speaker 6: A year with everybody intact, just once before I decide
- 25:18Speaker 6: not to do this anymore. I just like that my
- 25:20Speaker 6: whole team that I start with in August, everybody together
- 25:23Speaker 6: in April.
- 25:24Speaker 7: But sometimes in athletics, this is what happens.
- 25:28Speaker 6: But that's what's crazy about, you know, these past two years,
- 25:31Speaker 6: and so I'm ultra proud of them. You can tell
- 25:34Speaker 6: I get excited about this group again. We got to
- 25:39Speaker 6: go do it, you got to go live it. You know,
- 25:41Speaker 6: talking to talk and walking the walks two different things.
- 25:45Speaker 6: But I want them to embrace where they are right
- 25:47Speaker 6: now because this is not a given.
- 25:51Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm always good to hear that kind of stuff
- 25:54Speaker 1: from Vick Schaeffer, and we'll hear some more coming up
- 25:56Speaker 1: in the four o'clock hour. That was from the press
- 25:58Speaker 1: conference just a little while ago over on the UT campus.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Next hour in the three o'clock hour, in addition to
- 26:03Speaker 1: talking some college baseball with Ty Harrington, we'll hear from
- 26:06Speaker 1: Longhorn players from.
- 26:08Speaker 2: That news conference.
- 26:09Speaker 1: But up next inconceivable for a Friday afternoon, that's next.
- 26:13Speaker 1: When we continue on thirteen under the Zone, we get
- 26:16Speaker 1: ready to plunge headlong into a.
- 26:18Speaker 2: Very active, busy weekend.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Longhorn baseball team coming out on the field right now
- 26:23Speaker 1: to do some preliminary warm ups to get ready for
- 26:26Speaker 1: the series opener, a big matchup tonight, Game one of
- 26:29Speaker 1: the three game weekend series with LSU LSU number two
- 26:31Speaker 1: and most of the polls number one in a couple
- 26:34Speaker 1: and so Texas will play LSU tonight. The Longhorns will
- 26:39Speaker 1: of course send their transfer lefty Jared Spencer to the mound,
- 26:45Speaker 1: and it'll be the Tigers countering with the left to
- 26:53Speaker 1: of their own, their sophomore Kate Anderson, who's four and oh,
- 26:55Speaker 1: he'll go to the mound Jared Spencer two and oh
- 26:58Speaker 1: as he takes the mound tonight for Texas. So you'll
- 27:02Speaker 1: be able to hear the game here on thirteen hundred
- 27:06Speaker 1: the zone. It'll come your way beginning six forty five
- 27:10Speaker 1: of the pregame. Star time in the first pitch is
- 27:12Speaker 1: at seven o'clock. Texas women play tomorrow evening at Moody Center,
- 27:17Speaker 1: the number one seed in that Birmingham three region, and
- 27:21Speaker 1: they'll host first and second round. Actually a Booty Center
- 27:23Speaker 1: long Worn's take on the sixteen seed, the tribe of
- 27:26Speaker 1: William and Mary, who won the first four play in
- 27:29Speaker 1: game last night at Moody beating high point sixty nine
- 27:33Speaker 1: to sixty three. I got to tell you one thing, Cameron,
- 27:36Speaker 1: and we'll hear some more from Vick Schaeffer coming up
- 27:39Speaker 1: next hour. We heard from Vic last hour mainly about
- 27:43Speaker 1: his own team, and while that continues to be the
- 27:46Speaker 1: theme is make sure your team is ready to go.
- 27:50Speaker 1: He'll also address some things about William and Mary since
- 27:53Speaker 1: he watched them last night.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Well, one of the things that.
- 27:59Speaker 1: I've found interesting about William and Mary was, and if
- 28:03Speaker 1: for no other reason, no other reason, I'm interested in
- 28:10Speaker 1: calling this matchup between Texas and William and Mary. For
- 28:14Speaker 1: no other reason, Cameron Parker because of a guard for
- 28:20Speaker 1: the tribe of William and Mary by the name of
- 28:23Speaker 1: Monet Dance. Any Time you get a chance to call
- 28:31Speaker 1: a basketball game in this month of March and one
- 28:35Speaker 1: of the players has a name Dance in March, then
- 28:40Speaker 1: you're living right.
- 28:41Speaker 2: You know, you're fortunate, You're lucky.
- 28:44Speaker 1: So I consider myself fortunate and lucky to get an
- 28:47Speaker 1: opportunity to call back. It's William and Mary, by the way,
- 28:50Speaker 1: their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. And this
- 28:55Speaker 1: is a basketball team cam that won eleven games during
- 28:58Speaker 1: the regular season, Wow, eleven. They were in ninth place
- 29:03Speaker 1: in the Coastal Athletic Association. They went six and eight
- 29:07Speaker 1: in conference play. But like many teams do in March,
- 29:12Speaker 1: they caught lightning in a bottle. They won four games
- 29:14Speaker 1: and four nights in the Colonial Tournament in Washington, d C.
- 29:18Speaker 1: They won that tournament, played their way into a play
- 29:21Speaker 1: in in the NCAA Tournament, and they found a way
- 29:24Speaker 1: to beat a good high Point team last night. So
- 29:25Speaker 1: they beat high Point and so they're one to zero
- 29:29Speaker 1: all time in NCAA tournament place. They'll play the Longhorns
- 29:34Speaker 1: tomorrow evening. We'll be on the air at eight thirty
- 29:36Speaker 1: in the tip off at eight forty five between Texas
- 29:40Speaker 1: and Hey Kreb.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Yes, did you notice how the William and Mary Pep
- 29:46Speaker 3: band referred to themselves last night?
- 29:49Speaker 2: I did not? What did I miss? What I miss? There?
- 29:52Speaker 3: Well, they have the self moniker most attractive pet band.
- 29:59Speaker 3: Can you confirm? Can you deny that?
- 30:02Speaker 1: Well?
- 30:03Speaker 2: Are you looking at them at all?
- 30:05Speaker 1: I mean I looked at them a couple of times,
- 30:07Speaker 1: but you just look like a band. Mea see anything
- 30:14Speaker 1: you know? Highly unusual? They look they look like a band.
- 30:19Speaker 1: They didn't. They didn't put it this way. I didn't
- 30:22Speaker 1: see any striking characteristics that would have me going, Wow,
- 30:27Speaker 1: that's an attractive band.
- 30:28Speaker 2: You know I didn't.
- 30:30Speaker 1: I didn't really, but now you you've got my interest
- 30:33Speaker 1: piqued on this, and you're gonna have to do it
- 30:34Speaker 1: as well. When we're over there tomorrow night for the game,
- 30:36Speaker 1: you're gonna have to look over and find out why.
- 30:38Speaker 1: Maybe you, an intrepid reporter, could go over and ask
- 30:43Speaker 1: members of the Tribe band why they refer to themselves
- 30:48Speaker 1: as would would you say the most attractive band?
- 30:51Speaker 2: Yeah? Most attractive pep band? Okay, all right, well, maybe.
- 30:58Speaker 3: You know I think about her friend over at kix
- 31:01Speaker 3: A and Roger Wallace and Ill Gross. I mean, yeah,
- 31:04Speaker 3: you know, they are more journalists than I am. You know,
- 31:07Speaker 3: maybe this could be a piece for them.
- 31:09Speaker 2: To work on.
- 31:12Speaker 1: I'll bring it up to Rogers and I too. Okay,
- 31:14Speaker 1: so maybe you'll go do that. Okay. So anyway, we're
- 31:18Speaker 1: gonna hear from Texas players coming up a little bit
- 31:21Speaker 1: later on this hour. Coming up in a few minutes,
- 31:24Speaker 1: we'll visit with ty Harrington Longhorn men's basketball excuse me,
- 31:28Speaker 1: former law Texas State baseball coach and former Longhorn baseball player,
- 31:34Speaker 1: and Tye will talk college baseball with us, and we'll
- 31:38Speaker 1: talk about this big weekend series between Texas and LSU,
- 31:41Speaker 1: but also around the SEC. I don't know if anybody noticed,
- 31:45Speaker 1: twenty and one Tennessee is now twenty and two Tennessee.
- 31:49Speaker 1: The Volunteers lost game one of a three game Thursday
- 31:52Speaker 1: Friday Saturday series to Alabama. Don't look now, but the
- 31:57Speaker 1: Crimson Tide are four and oh in the SEC, coming
- 32:01Speaker 1: off that sweep of Texas A and M. And by
- 32:03Speaker 1: the way, since we're on the subject of the Aggies,
- 32:06Speaker 1: they dropped the series opener in a Thursday Friday Saturday
- 32:14Speaker 1: series matchup with Vanderbilt playing in Nashville.
- 32:19Speaker 2: Vanderbilt won five to three.
- 32:21Speaker 1: The Aggies, the preseason number one team in D one
- 32:24Speaker 1: baseball dot Com, are oh and four in SEC play,
- 32:28Speaker 1: so they're still trying to find their way through it
- 32:30Speaker 1: right now. And they are oho and four in conference play.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Alabama is four to zho. I don't think anybody would
- 32:36Speaker 1: have expected either of those numbers to be like that.
- 32:39Speaker 1: They would have expected Tennessee and LSU to be very good,
- 32:42Speaker 1: and they are. And I think it's been a pleasant
- 32:45Speaker 1: surprise to a lot of folks as to how good
- 32:49Speaker 1: Texas has been at the start. But that's all going
- 32:51Speaker 1: to very much be put to the test as they
- 32:56Speaker 1: take on this really good LSU team, an LSU team
- 33:00Speaker 1: that comes in batting three forty five as a team,
- 33:05Speaker 1: three forty five, and they're in batting three sixteen over
- 33:09Speaker 1: the weekend series sweep they had last weekend, and and
- 33:15Speaker 1: and their ERA is three three two, so collectively, so
- 33:20Speaker 1: it's a real good team.
- 33:21Speaker 2: All right, we need to break. When we come back.
- 33:23Speaker 1: Ty Harrington will be with us, we'll talk some college
- 33:25Speaker 1: baseball talk about this series and other matchups as well
- 33:28Speaker 1: in his early observations from this twenty twenty five collegiate
- 33:33Speaker 1: baseball season. We'll keep you updated on the NCAA basketball tournament.
- 33:37Speaker 1: Colorado State is on the threat, on the verge of
- 33:41Speaker 1: pulling off another twelve over five surprise as the Rams
- 33:46Speaker 1: lead the five seat Memphis seventy three sixty four. They've
- 33:50Speaker 1: got ninety seconds to go in that basketball game. With
- 33:53Speaker 1: Colorado State in the lead of that game against Memphis,
- 33:56Speaker 1: We'll keep you posted on that as we continue from
- 33:58Speaker 1: UFCU just falk Field under the zone, Colorado State advancing
- 34:03Speaker 1: in the West Region, and Seattle in the first round
- 34:05Speaker 1: beating the five seat Memphis. The final score in that
- 34:08Speaker 1: one was seventy eight to seventy. Right now in Milwaukee
- 34:12Speaker 1: in the South Region, Ole Miss leads North Carolina fourteen
- 34:16Speaker 1: to seven. They've played about five minutes in that ballgame.
- 34:19Speaker 1: I'll make it fourteen to ten.
- 34:21Speaker 2: RJ.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Davis just buried a three, so it's fourteen to ten
- 34:24Speaker 1: Ole Miss in that one. Joining us on the hotline,
- 34:28Speaker 1: our good friend, lifetime long worned, former long horned assistant
- 34:31Speaker 1: coach twenty years the head coach at Texas State. He
- 34:34Speaker 1: has transitioned seamlessly into the semi undersided, underbelly world of
- 34:42Speaker 1: television and radio broadcasting.
- 34:45Speaker 2: That would be Ty Harrington.
- 34:48Speaker 1: Oh okay, all right, well we'll just after I gave
- 34:51Speaker 1: him that nice intro, we'll try to I've been another
- 34:55Speaker 1: NCAA tournament update for you. Vanderbilt on top of Saint
- 34:59Speaker 1: Mary's twenty seven eighteen. That's a ten seed versus seven
- 35:03Speaker 1: seed matchup there and uh.
- 35:08Speaker 2: And that one's in Cleveland.
- 35:09Speaker 1: If Vanderbilt wins that game, if I'm not mistaken on
- 35:12Speaker 1: my bracket right in front of me, I should pull
- 35:13Speaker 1: it out. I believe they would play Alabama in the
- 35:15Speaker 1: second round. He'd have an allD SEC matchup on that.
- 35:18Speaker 2: We'll see that.
- 35:19Speaker 1: So all right, So Ty Harrington is on the hotline
- 35:21Speaker 1: with us. As I said, he has transitioned seamlessly into
- 35:26Speaker 1: the uh really nasty underworld of college broadcasting in radio
- 35:33Speaker 1: and television.
- 35:33Speaker 2: But he's done. He's done that seam.
- 35:35Speaker 1: See how's your N seed basketball tournament bracket look right now?
- 35:38Speaker 2: Ty? Well, not very good.
- 35:46Speaker 11: Really, It's gonna look a lot different heres based on the.
- 35:50Speaker 12: Fact that I didn't fill that now, So it's not
- 35:53Speaker 12: gonna look very good at this point.
- 35:57Speaker 2: For some reason, I like personer and everybody talking about it.
- 36:00Speaker 12: And launch it and hear about it, and this is
- 36:02Speaker 12: really my favorite time.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Here for college basketball part of it, and.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I just didn't fill it out.
- 36:11Speaker 1: Yeah, well that's that. That's a very smart and salient point.
- 36:15Speaker 1: Is why why even bother, you know, stay away, because
- 36:17Speaker 1: all of our bracket's going to be busted here before long.
- 36:20Speaker 2: It's going to bring it be. Uh.
- 36:22Speaker 1: The first final score of the day yesterday ensured the
- 36:26Speaker 1: fact that I would not have a perfect bracket, so
- 36:30Speaker 1: you know, uh, and I'm gonna I'm in a family
- 36:33Speaker 1: group uh bracket thing, and uh, none of us are
- 36:38Speaker 1: doing very well.
- 36:39Speaker 2: So I don't worry too.
- 36:40Speaker 1: Much about that, all right, Uh, let's talk some baseball
- 36:44Speaker 1: and uh, I'm going to just jump right into some
- 36:49Speaker 1: sec with you, and then we'll talk about some mid
- 36:51Speaker 1: majors as well.
- 36:52Speaker 13: Uh.
- 36:53Speaker 2: I mentioned this earlier. I don't know that too many
- 36:56Speaker 2: folks would have.
- 36:56Speaker 1: Believed at the start of the season that early in
- 36:59Speaker 1: the conference season you would have Alabama four and oh
- 37:04Speaker 1: in league play, in Texas A and M oh and four.
- 37:07Speaker 1: You would you would not have have have picked that
- 37:10Speaker 1: in any kind of prognostication, would you.
- 37:13Speaker 4: No, that would have busted my bracket from the get go,
- 37:17Speaker 4: And certainly now I would not have ever gotta thought
- 37:20Speaker 4: that going into the season. Golly, And I'll tell you.
- 37:24Speaker 11: What, because after watching Alabama and A and M play
- 37:28Speaker 11: last weekend and then peeking back in and watching, uh,
- 37:33Speaker 11: the Crimson tied again last night.
- 37:36Speaker 12: They were really physical, I mean really physical, offensively good
- 37:40Speaker 12: looking club and matched up you know last weekend mat
- 37:45Speaker 12: step A and M at different times.
- 37:48Speaker 1: Okay, I'm sure, and I'm still connected here, so we
- 37:54Speaker 1: may have, uh, we may have false tie. Try to
- 37:59Speaker 1: get him back here momentarily. Let me update a couple
- 38:01Speaker 1: other scores for you. Vanderbilt up on Seeing Mary's. They're
- 38:05Speaker 1: inside a minute remaining in the first half. It's twenty
- 38:08Speaker 1: nine to twenty. In that one I mentioned the old
- 38:11Speaker 1: Miss North Carolina game. It's fourteen ten Ole Miss. They
- 38:15Speaker 1: played about five minutes there at the half. Duke on
- 38:17Speaker 1: top of Mount Saint Mary's fifty four to twenty eight.
- 38:20Speaker 1: So it looks like it's gonna be Duke and Baylor
- 38:22Speaker 1: in the second round of that matchup.
- 38:24Speaker 2: Cameron, do you have me and have we lost tie?
- 38:28Speaker 2: I got you and we'll work on getting tied back here. Okay,
- 38:31Speaker 2: all right, okay.
- 38:33Speaker 1: In addition to the Alabama Tennessee series that started last
- 38:41Speaker 1: night with Alabama winning, and the Vanderbilt Texas A and
- 38:44Speaker 1: M series with Vanderbilt winning that series opener last night
- 38:48Speaker 1: five to three, there's always going to be And this
- 38:51Speaker 1: is another thing for Loggorn fans to get accustomed to experiencing, and.
- 38:58Speaker 2: That is the fact.
- 39:00Speaker 1: That every week in the SEC you will at least
- 39:04Speaker 1: have at least have two series that start on Thursday
- 39:11Speaker 1: that go Thursday, Friday Saturday instead of Friday, Saturday Sunday.
- 39:15Speaker 2: The Longrornes have a couple of those this year.
- 39:18Speaker 1: A couple of Thursday Friday Saturday series, So they've got those,
- 39:24Speaker 1: and there's some other ones. However, most of the series
- 39:29Speaker 1: will take place as Friday Saturday Sunday series.
- 39:33Speaker 2: And in the SEC.
- 39:35Speaker 1: The other series that start tonight, number four Georgia playing
- 39:41Speaker 1: number thirteen Florida. That's a big one in Gainesville, tenth
- 39:45Speaker 1: ranked Ou hosting Mississippi State, Auburn is playing at Kentucky,
- 39:52Speaker 1: Ole Miss plays at Missouri, and Arkansas hosting South Carolina.
- 39:57Speaker 1: So those are all Friday Saturday Sunday, all right, ty Incos.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Back of this, Ty, you were saying that you would
- 40:02Speaker 1: not have had that in a in a bracket of
- 40:05Speaker 1: Alabama being four and oh and a and m O
- 40:07Speaker 1: and four. Let me go back to the Crimson Tide
- 40:09Speaker 1: you started to talk about. You you got a chance
- 40:11Speaker 1: to watch them last night against Tennessee. I was pretty
- 40:13Speaker 1: impressed to see what the Crimson Tide did with its
- 40:15Speaker 1: pitching last night.
- 40:17Speaker 4: Yeah, look, hey again, even you know last weekend, I
- 40:20Speaker 4: thought they were able to match up the Aggies well
- 40:23Speaker 4: at different times when they needed to both right and left.
- 40:25Speaker 4: But then they hit a great mix and last night
- 40:29Speaker 4: as well. To your point, they've got a great mix
- 40:32Speaker 4: of high velocity arms. And then if you watch them,
- 40:36Speaker 4: they go to a lower velocity eighty eight to ninety
- 40:39Speaker 4: one with different two different pitches with a couple of
- 40:42Speaker 4: their bullpen guys, but the majority of them all through
- 40:46Speaker 4: strikes and commanded secondary and but they gave you different looks.
- 40:51Speaker 4: And again I was impressive again last night. Defensive play
- 40:54Speaker 4: and right field last night was really good. And then
- 40:58Speaker 4: of course their shortstop Lebron is a really nice, really nice,
- 41:03Speaker 4: really good looking player. And again they are really physical
- 41:09Speaker 4: Alabama is.
- 41:10Speaker 2: And but then again when.
- 41:12Speaker 4: You go through and you start watching all the SEC teams,
- 41:16Speaker 4: the majority of them are really physical looking, athletic looking
- 41:21Speaker 4: baseball teams.
- 41:23Speaker 1: Okay, all right, And then and then on the other
- 41:27Speaker 1: end of that, I wanted to get your thoughts on
- 41:29Speaker 1: A and M, because the Aggies look like at times
- 41:32Speaker 1: are getting some good pitching, but they seem to be
- 41:35Speaker 1: lacking something they had in large abundance of last year,
- 41:39Speaker 1: the timely hit, a late a late game hit, an
- 41:43Speaker 1: important hit with runners in scoring position. All programs want
- 41:47Speaker 1: more of that, clearly, including the long horns. Even they
- 41:51Speaker 1: Jim Slastangles said he wants to have more of timely
- 41:55Speaker 1: hits with guys runners in scoring position, but it's that
- 41:57Speaker 1: seems to be eluding Texas.
- 41:59Speaker 2: A and M. And then they've had some problems in
- 42:00Speaker 2: the field as well.
- 42:01Speaker 4: Defensively, well, I think there's two pieces to that. So
- 42:05Speaker 4: pee peel back the lineup from a year ago that
- 42:08Speaker 4: played for a national championship, and you can argue either
- 42:11Speaker 4: way on what I'm about to say.
- 42:13Speaker 2: You take Montgomery on the lineup.
- 42:15Speaker 4: And you saw what happened when they got to the
- 42:16Speaker 4: championship series. He weren't able to win it after he
- 42:18Speaker 4: got hurt. And then you take your whole back out.
- 42:21Speaker 4: And I'm not making excuses, but when you start peeling
- 42:24Speaker 4: back two of those types of hitters out of last
- 42:26Speaker 4: year's lineup, which kind of fed into where they were
- 42:29Speaker 4: going to be ranked this year, and then you take
- 42:32Speaker 4: their whole back out this year from you know, being
- 42:35Speaker 4: on the front end and or the coverage on both
- 42:37Speaker 4: sides of Lobolette, I think paid it's really been a
- 42:42Speaker 4: big issue for them offensively and defensively. If you go
- 42:45Speaker 4: into last weekend, there were two times in the in
- 42:49Speaker 4: the series with Alabama that their defense failed them.
- 42:51Speaker 2: There was a.
- 42:52Speaker 4: Second base play that wasn't made. A misplayed at flat
- 42:55Speaker 4: ball and left field and I'm sorry right field, a
- 42:58Speaker 4: sunball play you know that was played, and so both
- 43:01Speaker 4: of those leading to runs that ended up splitting the
- 43:04Speaker 4: game in Alabama's favors. So the detailed part of playing
- 43:08Speaker 4: defense has also come into play for them, where a
- 43:11Speaker 4: year ago they didn't have those types of issues and
- 43:14Speaker 4: if they did, they were able, they were able offensively
- 43:17Speaker 4: to overcome them. Again, going through that lineup a year ago,
- 43:22Speaker 4: eight MS lineup. When you start talking about and I
- 43:24Speaker 4: think coach Loosenengo would agree with me on this at
- 43:26Speaker 4: different times as coaches, timely hitting comes from the fact
- 43:29Speaker 4: that you have a really balanced lineup that's a good
- 43:33Speaker 4: piece of it. Like a lot of guys will go
- 43:34Speaker 4: through there in the course of a year, not just
- 43:36Speaker 4: one weekend, not just one game, but to the course
- 43:39Speaker 4: of a month, a year, a season, the balance part
- 43:42Speaker 4: of your lineup starts to really filter and you get
- 43:45Speaker 4: to see it when you come up with what we
- 43:48Speaker 4: call timely hits, when you come up.
- 43:49Speaker 2: With two out hits.
- 43:50Speaker 4: Because the guy who's coming up is good, the guy
- 43:54Speaker 4: who's coming up right after him might even be even better.
- 43:57Speaker 4: And so and that angles all the way through one
- 44:00Speaker 4: through nine through a lineup and we'll ten.
- 44:03Speaker 2: Look I say this about Texas lineup today.
- 44:05Speaker 4: Now, they could get injured, you know, hopefully not.
- 44:08Speaker 2: There's a lot of things that can happen.
- 44:09Speaker 4: But you try to go through that Longhorn lineup four
- 44:12Speaker 4: times right now and a fifth time, and it's hard.
- 44:15Speaker 4: It's really hard because there's such great balance to it,
- 44:18Speaker 4: you know, from one to nine. And that's why I
- 44:21Speaker 4: think even this weekend it's gonna be such an exciting
- 44:25Speaker 4: and fun test for them because ls u's arms are
- 44:30Speaker 4: really good. I mean, it's a it's a creative you know,
- 44:34Speaker 4: power arm off the mound from them.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Now.
- 44:36Speaker 4: The one thing that I guess would be an achilles
- 44:40Speaker 4: for l s U at this point, possibly as a
- 44:42Speaker 4: lot of the runs have been scored off of walks
- 44:45Speaker 4: and they've had a lot of they've had some walks
- 44:48Speaker 4: off the mound that has led to some of.
- 44:50Speaker 2: It as well. I guess that ty.
- 44:54Speaker 1: I guess what that does is it speaks to LSU's hitters,
- 44:58Speaker 1: I guess, being pretty disciplined at plate where they could
- 45:00Speaker 1: take a walk if the bases are loaded, or in
- 45:03Speaker 1: a situation where they could put somebody in scoring position,
- 45:06Speaker 1: which in turn doesn't it put pressure on the other
- 45:09Speaker 1: team to make sure there's strike throwers.
- 45:12Speaker 4: One hundred man, there's strikeout. Their free base ratio on
- 45:18Speaker 4: the offensive side has been so good to answer that.
- 45:22Speaker 2: Yes, I mean it's not even close.
- 45:24Speaker 4: You know, what you would love to have at the
- 45:26Speaker 4: end of the year is for your free base and
- 45:28Speaker 4: strike out ratio to be flat, meaning similar, equal or
- 45:33Speaker 4: even just but you know, your number of strikeouts to
- 45:36Speaker 4: be just a little bit above it. You would be
- 45:38Speaker 4: more than happy as as a coach. So that's not
- 45:40Speaker 4: even close to them right now. Offensively, their free base
- 45:43Speaker 4: part of it is way bigger and way better than
- 45:46Speaker 4: their strikeout ratio, and that that has it. It puts
- 45:49Speaker 4: pressure on the defense, It puts pressure on the pitchers,
- 45:53Speaker 4: It puts pressure on everybody that they will.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Go deep into counts. Much similar to what.
- 45:58Speaker 4: You and I talked about, you know, similar dates almost.
- 46:01Speaker 4: I guess it was a year ago that A and
- 46:04Speaker 4: M came in in March I think it was, and
- 46:06Speaker 4: they're striked out and their free base ratio.
- 46:09Speaker 2: Was unreal at that time as well.
- 46:12Speaker 4: They would take the walk, they would take the hit,
- 46:15Speaker 4: batsman whatever they had to do to get into counts
- 46:18Speaker 4: and the game basis, but also to to you know,
- 46:21Speaker 4: find pitches that they could swing at that they could
- 46:24Speaker 4: and they were disciplined. And now you know, and people
- 46:27Speaker 4: can argue with me on this if they want, and
- 46:29Speaker 4: I love the debate about it, but the idea that
- 46:32Speaker 4: the umpires are being tested and graded on track man
- 46:37Speaker 4: has now led to a much more offensive game because
- 46:42Speaker 4: of the number of walks they're making them throw the
- 46:44Speaker 4: ball across the plate. Now, that day when you were
- 46:47Speaker 4: watching some of those umpires, you know call strikes three
- 46:49Speaker 4: balls off the plate, no longer exists anymore because they're
- 46:52Speaker 4: getting handed you know, a test grade at the end
- 46:55Speaker 4: of it that says, man, you miss nineteen pitches, you know,
- 46:58Speaker 4: whatever that looks like. And so people that train to
- 47:02Speaker 4: that are taking advantage of that and the disciplined part
- 47:05Speaker 4: of hitting now as opposed to a couple of years ago.
- 47:09Speaker 2: I think LSU is.
- 47:09Speaker 4: Doing it, Texas is doing it, the good teams are
- 47:12Speaker 4: training to it, and I think it's changed in the game.
- 47:14Speaker 7: A little bit.
- 47:15Speaker 4: And then they all debated, which you and I've talked
- 47:17Speaker 4: about before, a lot of people talk about the college
- 47:20Speaker 4: pitchers are throwing the ball harder than they've ever thrown
- 47:23Speaker 4: velos up, more than that it's ever been.
- 47:25Speaker 2: Mean, I'm watching guys.
- 47:25Speaker 4: You'll see some guys this weekend on both sides, both
- 47:29Speaker 4: Texas and LSU, and some young arms go out there
- 47:31Speaker 4: and be ninety five to ninety nine, and man, that
- 47:34Speaker 4: is a lot of veto. But because of that, also
- 47:37Speaker 4: there are a lot of guys that's, you know, grip
- 47:39Speaker 4: it and rip it right. There's not the command and
- 47:42Speaker 4: the efficiency on the mound like there was at some
- 47:44Speaker 4: point in time in college baseball.
- 47:46Speaker 1: Interesting, so you think, do you think there is a
- 47:48Speaker 1: direct correlation between track man technology and college baseball conferences
- 47:54Speaker 1: are using now that's kind of like looking over the
- 47:56Speaker 1: shoulder at umpires seeing what their ball strike callto is
- 48:00Speaker 1: and if there's a large discrepancy about what the what
- 48:04Speaker 1: the TrackMan shows in calling and therefore making them set
- 48:10Speaker 1: or putting them even under a little more pressure, and
- 48:13Speaker 1: therefore the result is a positive one for offenses for
- 48:16Speaker 1: collegiate baseball.
- 48:18Speaker 4: Agreed, I think guys, I think guys know hitters now
- 48:23Speaker 4: know more than ever what they feel like the strike
- 48:26Speaker 4: zone is, and they're making them do that, and I
- 48:29Speaker 4: just think, you know, hitters and coaches are training to it, uh,
- 48:33Speaker 4: and the disciplined part of the game. It is similar
- 48:36Speaker 4: craik to we didn't know it when we played for
- 48:39Speaker 4: coach guys. Now it was a more intended you're taking right,
- 48:44Speaker 4: you you had to take in a two zho three
- 48:46Speaker 4: one count more times than you didn't. But now it
- 48:50Speaker 4: is it's proven that you know, you've got this certain
- 48:52Speaker 4: box that these guys are having to throw the ball into,
- 48:55Speaker 4: and you know guys aren't consistently doing it, and they're
- 49:00Speaker 4: willing to teach that part of it. So yeah, I
- 49:02Speaker 4: think there's a direct correlation between training for it and
- 49:04Speaker 4: understanding what the strike zone is it pitches that are
- 49:07Speaker 4: going to be called strikes and others that are I
- 49:08Speaker 4: think umpires are more apt to call a strike a
- 49:11Speaker 4: ball now than they were five years ago. Seven years ago,
- 49:16Speaker 4: they would call a ball a strike. Yes, I do
- 49:18Speaker 4: believe that.
- 49:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Interesting, Okay, final thing here, the seventeen game winning streak
- 49:24Speaker 1: got snapped in twelve innings on Tuesday night. Was it
- 49:29Speaker 1: too early in the season for any guys on the
- 49:33Speaker 1: ball club to feel any pressure about that wind streak?
- 49:37Speaker 1: And whether there was or not. Do you think it's
- 49:40Speaker 1: a little bit of a relief that that's out of
- 49:41Speaker 1: the way. That happened on a non conference game, even
- 49:43Speaker 1: though you want to win every time you go out
- 49:45Speaker 1: to have that cleared and they start fresh with this
- 49:48Speaker 1: LSU team coming in.
- 49:50Speaker 4: I think it was college baseball that just happened Tuesday night.
- 49:54Speaker 4: My personal opinion, I got to watch the last three
- 49:57Speaker 4: innings of it, and I just you know, I mean,
- 50:00Speaker 4: Ruger Riojas.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Was really good.
- 50:02Speaker 4: I mean he really was, and people could say he
- 50:04Speaker 4: made a mistake, but the reality was the ball was
- 50:07Speaker 4: down in a way, the guy got out in front,
- 50:08Speaker 4: hooked it up him to win, and uh.
- 50:11Speaker 2: It pulled out.
- 50:11Speaker 4: And by the way, a really good uts A game team.
- 50:15Speaker 4: So I think if you know they went on the
- 50:17Speaker 4: road to beat A and M, they've they've done some
- 50:19Speaker 4: good things. They've got a Phillipine club, they were able
- 50:22Speaker 4: to match up you know, Texas with the arms. They
- 50:25Speaker 4: went to their starters, you know, their Friday Saturday starters
- 50:29Speaker 4: to extend the game. And that's a choice that you
- 50:32Speaker 4: know min majors will make every once in a while.
- 50:34Speaker 4: I've made it before, others have made it before. Other
- 50:37Speaker 4: teams have done it. When it's your bullpen day on
- 50:39Speaker 4: a Tuesday, you'll bring your Friday guy out and so there.
- 50:44Speaker 2: I think it was just a good team.
- 50:45Speaker 4: I think I think Texas was playing as hard as
- 50:47Speaker 4: they played, they just weren't able to come up with
- 50:50Speaker 4: some things maybe earlier in that game off the mound
- 50:53Speaker 4: uh to to try to help them, and uh, I
- 50:55Speaker 4: think it was just a college baseball game.
- 50:57Speaker 2: Got in the way is what they got away. Happened
- 51:00Speaker 2: on Tuesday night. He's Ty Harrington.
- 51:02Speaker 1: He'll be on the call working tomorrow in the weekend
- 51:07Speaker 1: as Texas will take on LSU. Hey, I appreciate it.
- 51:11Speaker 1: We'll see you out here at the ballpark. I appreciate
- 51:13Speaker 1: you taking the time time.
- 51:15Speaker 4: I appreciate it always and look forward to being autural
- 51:17Speaker 4: Saturday Sunday. But I got to tell your crowd and
- 51:19Speaker 4: you're on it real quick. The fact that you're doing
- 51:22Speaker 4: a basketball game and a baseball game mixed in just
- 51:25Speaker 4: fascinates me to no ends that you're able to do that.
- 51:28Speaker 4: I got to be honest with you, the preparation that
- 51:29Speaker 4: goes into that. I've plugged you for it because it
- 51:32Speaker 4: is a lot. But You've got a lot going on
- 51:34Speaker 4: with the women's basketball and now baseball, and so I'll
- 51:38Speaker 4: as always I'll be listening to the games that you're
- 51:40Speaker 4: doing as well.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Hey, I appreciate it. Thanks time. We'll see out here.
- 51:44Speaker 2: You got it.
- 51:45Speaker 1: That is Ty herringson and he works those ESPN SEC
- 51:51Speaker 1: Network Plus telecast.
- 51:52Speaker 2: He'll be on Tomorrow and Sunday. Keep more.
- 51:54Speaker 1: Littill actually work tonight's telecast with Ben McDonald, the former
- 51:58Speaker 1: LSU All American and Rodger Rowls to join me tonight
- 52:02Speaker 1: Roger and Keith love the call of tomorrow night's game.
- 52:04Speaker 1: I'll be across I thirty five with the Texas Women's
- 52:07Speaker 1: NCAA tournament game, working with Kathy Harston on that, and
- 52:10Speaker 1: then Keith and I will bring you a Sunday's game
- 52:12Speaker 1: here at the ballpark. The series finale against LSU coming up.
- 52:16Speaker 1: We're going to hear from some of the Texas women's
- 52:19Speaker 1: players when we continue on this Friday afternoon on thirteen
- 52:22Speaker 1: under the Zone, third and final hour of the program
- 52:24Speaker 1: here on thirteen under the Zone, Greig Ay with you
- 52:27Speaker 1: from UFC, Dish Fogg Field and Camera Parker in the
- 52:32Speaker 1: studio as he joins us this afternoon.
- 52:35Speaker 2: We have one more hour of the program to go.
- 52:37Speaker 1: Coming up in a few minutes, we'll talk some Major
- 52:39Speaker 1: League baseball Jean Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office.
- 52:43Speaker 1: Major League season a week away from getting underway. In
- 52:45Speaker 1: full of course, that doesn't count the two games that
- 52:47Speaker 1: we're played in Japan this week between the Cubs and
- 52:49Speaker 1: the Dodgers, but we'll talk about.
- 52:51Speaker 2: Those things with Gino. We'll take a closer look at
- 52:54Speaker 2: this match.
- 52:55Speaker 1: We're also going to hear some more from Vick Schaeffer,
- 52:57Speaker 1: Texas women's basketball head coach as they prepare for their
- 53:00Speaker 1: NCAA Tournament opener. Texas the number one seed in that
- 53:05Speaker 1: Birmingham three regional you want to call it that, meaning
- 53:09Speaker 1: they're the third number one seed. South Carolina, by the way,
- 53:13Speaker 1: is well on its way to winning today it's first
- 53:15Speaker 1: round game. They're in the Birmingham two region. Those two
- 53:18Speaker 1: would be on a collision course if they were both
- 53:20Speaker 1: to reach the final four, a meeting in the semifinals.
- 53:24Speaker 1: Spokane number one region, as UCLA the number one overall seed,
- 53:28Speaker 1: and usc Spokane number four regional, that's the second one there.
- 53:34Speaker 1: They would be the number four overall seed. And again
- 53:37Speaker 1: the significance of those things is there are two regionals
- 53:44Speaker 1: being played at each of those two cities, two in
- 53:48Speaker 1: Birmingham and two in Spokane. So if it were to
- 53:54Speaker 1: play out with the seeds winning all the way through
- 53:59Speaker 1: to the final four, or you would have two Big
- 54:02Speaker 1: ten schools facing one another art rivals no less in
- 54:05Speaker 1: UCLA and USC, and you would have two SEC schools
- 54:09Speaker 1: in South Carolina and Texas meeting. There are plenty of
- 54:13Speaker 1: schools who could have something to say about that. The
- 54:15Speaker 1: number two seeds, including Yukon which is in that Spokane
- 54:19Speaker 1: four regional. Of course, the number two seed in the
- 54:21Speaker 1: Birmingham three regional where Texas is is TCU, but the
- 54:25Speaker 1: three seed is noted Dame, so that's another team that
- 54:28Speaker 1: could really fight for. Ohio State is the number four
- 54:32Speaker 1: seed in that Birmingham three regional with Texas and Tennessee
- 54:37Speaker 1: is the number five.
- 54:38Speaker 2: So it's a quality region.
- 54:39Speaker 1: All of them have some quality teams right up at
- 54:43Speaker 1: the top of a Texas to play William and Mary,
- 54:46Speaker 1: and again that's going to be an eight forty five
- 54:48Speaker 1: right around there for the tip off will be on
- 54:50Speaker 1: the air at eight thirty on one oh three point
- 54:52Speaker 1: one AFM. Here it'll be long worn baseball both tonight
- 54:55Speaker 1: and again long worn baseball tomorrow evening on the zone
- 55:00Speaker 1: and Sunday afternoon at two o'clock. Tonight six forty five
- 55:04Speaker 1: pre game start time at a seven o'clock first pitch
- 55:07Speaker 1: and Texas against LSU. And then tomorrow evening it's a
- 55:11Speaker 1: six o'clock first pitch, five to forty five air time.
- 55:13Speaker 2: Roger Wallis and Keith Mortland have the call on that
- 55:15Speaker 2: one for you.
- 55:16Speaker 1: Roger will joined me for the call of this one
- 55:17Speaker 1: a night and then Sunday Keith will join me for
- 55:19Speaker 1: the call of the third and final game of that series.
- 55:22Speaker 1: So it'll be interesting to see how Texas does against
- 55:25Speaker 1: this really good LSU team number one in a couple
- 55:30Speaker 1: of polls, number two in the rest of those Poles
- 55:32Speaker 1: and the Tigers one of the nation's best teams of
- 55:35Speaker 1: absolute certain We visited with ty Errington last hour to
- 55:39Speaker 1: talk about that, about how good this LSU team is,
- 55:42Speaker 1: the things they do very well, and how they find
- 55:45Speaker 1: a way to get on base and draw walks and
- 55:47Speaker 1: things like that. So the long words will have to
- 55:49Speaker 1: be active in the strike zone all right. Up next
- 55:52Speaker 1: it'll be time to talk to Major League Baseball with
- 55:55Speaker 1: Geene Watson from the Chicago White Sox front office when
- 55:57Speaker 1: we continue on this Friday afternoon on thirty under the Zone.
- 56:01Speaker 1: But it's seventy six degrees beautiful sunny. Skuys in great
- 56:03Speaker 1: weather for a series opener between Texas and LSU joining
- 56:08Speaker 1: us on the hotline to talk Major League Baseball.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Our good friend Jean watch them from the Chicago White
- 56:12Speaker 2: Sox front office.
- 56:13Speaker 1: And before we get started with any hardball conversations, Gino,
- 56:17Speaker 1: I know from personal experience in the late eighties in
- 56:21Speaker 1: early nineties when I was a younger reporter working at
- 56:27Speaker 1: KRLD at Dallas, and I was sent to Rangers spring
- 56:29Speaker 1: training for six straight years from eighty eight through ninety
- 56:32Speaker 1: three in Port Charlotte, Florida. The one thing that was inescapable,
- 56:37Speaker 1: the one reality that was inescapable, was that the players
- 56:41Speaker 1: were very very much in the NCAA basketball tournament pools,
- 56:47Speaker 1: and they were following what was going on and giving
- 56:49Speaker 1: each other the business when one guy's team lost or another.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Were you involved in those things? Did you watch a
- 56:54Speaker 1: lot of those guys? You just only had to walk
- 56:57Speaker 1: in the clubhouse to see how wound up guys like
- 57:00Speaker 1: Pete and Kavillion, Bobby Witt were for the Rangers, and
- 57:04Speaker 1: and even Nolan Ryan and those NCAA tournament pools.
- 57:09Speaker 14: And you know what I've actually I'm actually up already.
- 57:12Speaker 2: We have one where you get you get.
- 57:14Speaker 14: A home team and a visiting team, and I'm a
- 57:17Speaker 14: home team.
- 57:17Speaker 2: I'm I'm a I'm a winning team.
- 57:19Speaker 14: One and then a zero team, uh, A losing team zero.
- 57:22Speaker 14: So I've won one hundred dollars already the first day,
- 57:25Speaker 14: except the A and M money I wouldn't accept. I
- 57:27Speaker 14: sent it back and I donated, I wouldn't accept.
- 57:32Speaker 2: I wouldn't accept that money. So okay, I'm great. I'm great.
- 57:36Speaker 2: It's always good to visit with you. Uh and uh.
- 57:39Speaker 1: And of course this is a big weekend series. I
- 57:41Speaker 1: know you had some other duties take you away from this,
- 57:43Speaker 1: but I know you're keeping an eye on what's going
- 57:45Speaker 1: to be happening between Texas and l s U this weekend.
- 57:48Speaker 2: Oh man, it was. It's a star studded weekend.
- 57:50Speaker 14: I was so excited to be coming in to to
- 57:53Speaker 14: see the Anderson kid from l s U and and
- 57:56Speaker 14: Blou from Texas and others, and uh, the today is
- 58:00Speaker 14: really important day from a spring training roster standpoint, a
- 58:03Speaker 14: lot of opt outs, player opt outs, and so I
- 58:06Speaker 14: just couldn't get away, but was really looking forward to
- 58:08Speaker 14: seeing that series.
- 58:09Speaker 2: And we'll see both teams along the way at some point,
- 58:12Speaker 2: no doubt about it.
- 58:12Speaker 1: Okay, I want to ask you about your ball club
- 58:15Speaker 1: before we get into some other things, since we're headed
- 58:17Speaker 1: down the home stretch. ESPN did a pretty extensive piece
- 58:20Speaker 1: on your team today and it was entitled predicting the
- 58:24Speaker 1: White Sox lost total and the other worst teams of
- 58:29Speaker 1: twenty twenty five. Now, what I read from guys who
- 58:32Speaker 1: know real well and our friends with like Buster Olney
- 58:35Speaker 1: and Jesse Rodgers and David Schanfeld, those guys, they all
- 58:40Speaker 1: painted a pretty optimistic picture of your team, you know, Yeah,
- 58:44Speaker 1: still finishing a lot below five hundred and still in
- 58:46Speaker 1: the rebuild. As you have said from the outset, this
- 58:49Speaker 1: is a rebuild that's going to take some time. But
- 58:51Speaker 1: they were pretty optimistic about it. And I know you've
- 58:53Speaker 1: been pretty optimistic about the.
- 58:56Speaker 2: Direction that the ball club in the organization is taking.
- 59:00Speaker 14: Yeah, and you know, Craig, it's really it's really bizarre
- 59:03Speaker 14: because this is my fourth rebuild, and this one feels
- 59:06Speaker 14: so far advanced from others in a time when the
- 59:10Speaker 14: vehicles to acquire players is a little tougher. You know,
- 59:13Speaker 14: we were very fortunate to make Garrett Crochet a starter
- 59:15Speaker 14: last spring, and and that turned into four very nice
- 59:18Speaker 14: prospects from the Boston Red Sox. We've done a great
- 59:22Speaker 14: job in the draft through our first draft. We did
- 59:24Speaker 14: a really good job internationally. So we we rule five
- 59:27Speaker 14: Shane Smith, who is going to make our club and
- 59:29Speaker 14: has been arguably the best one of our best starters.
- 59:32Speaker 14: And so while it's going to be another long season
- 59:34Speaker 14: in Chicago, I was just talking to some of our
- 59:37Speaker 14: media members out here, like it just doesn't feel as
- 59:40Speaker 14: bad because there's so much optimism on the horizon with
- 59:44Speaker 14: really impactful players, and in one year we've done a
- 59:46Speaker 14: lot to improve this organization.
- 59:48Speaker 1: Well, I remember both the Rangers and Astros going through
- 59:51Speaker 1: all of these things, and and and from a fan perspective,
- 59:56Speaker 1: and and yeah, I root for a team that's that's
- 59:59Speaker 1: uh kind of a gun the gold standard right now,
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: and we'll see if they repeat as World Series champions.
- 1:00:04Speaker 1: But I remember it wasn't that long ago when the
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: Dodgers were having to go through rebuilds too, and other
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: teams were as well. And I think from a fans
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: perspective that all they're really asking for you. Yeah, they
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: want to contender and they want to win championships, but
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: they want to see the team ownership and management demonstrate
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: a real abiding interest in building a winner and not
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: just there.
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: I think that's the problem that a lot of Cowboy
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: fans have with Jerry Jones, is that they don't see
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: any real positive movement toward building a championship caliber team.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: And I know fans in the past and some.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Years past might have felt that way about the Rangers
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: and the Astros, but we both seen each of those
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: clubs win World Championships in the past five years. So
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: they both have ownership and management teams in place to
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: want to move the ball club in that direction. Is
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: that what you come in ConA with fans. They want
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: to see the ownership, the front office, the management care
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: about progress in building a winner.
- 1:01:09Speaker 14: Yeah, and our fans are super passionate in Chicago. I
- 1:01:11Speaker 14: have absolutely love our fan base. They're very hard, but
- 1:01:14Speaker 14: they're super and I can't wait to win for them.
- 1:01:18Speaker 14: The thing the separator when you talk about the Astros,
- 1:01:21Speaker 14: I mean Jim Crane is arguably the modern day George Steinbrenner.
- 1:01:25Speaker 14: The expectations drive the results, and he expects to win
- 1:01:28Speaker 14: every year.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: Chris Young, who is on our.
- 1:01:30Speaker 14: Twenty fifteen World Series seen in Kansas City, one of
- 1:01:34Speaker 14: the most fierce competitors that I've ever known in any sport.
- 1:01:38Speaker 14: Chris expects to win, and the Rangers won a World Series.
- 1:01:41Speaker 14: And when the expectations drive the results and its competition
- 1:01:46Speaker 14: over process and finance, you have a chance to separate
- 1:01:49Speaker 14: yourself very quickly from a lot of other organizations because
- 1:01:53Speaker 14: a lot of other organizations are let's get in the
- 1:01:56Speaker 14: first round, let's win a few games, let's have great
- 1:01:59Speaker 14: things built up set about our system. Let's let's draw
- 1:02:02Speaker 14: two million, and if we can do that every year,
- 1:02:04Speaker 14: we call that a success. And in every organization I've
- 1:02:07Speaker 14: ever been a part of, winning a World championship was
- 1:02:10Speaker 14: the goal. And so when you get to that definitive
- 1:02:13Speaker 14: moment in the field where it's like, Okay, we can
- 1:02:17Speaker 14: stay where we're at and we can be competitive.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: But do we really have a chance to win the
- 1:02:21Speaker 2: whole thing?
- 1:02:22Speaker 14: And when you put your eyes on the prize and
- 1:02:24Speaker 14: you're willing to push in with prospects, push in financially,
- 1:02:27Speaker 14: even on type you do all that right, you got
- 1:02:29Speaker 14: to have a lot of luck in October. You got
- 1:02:31Speaker 14: to be playing well in October. And that's certainly what
- 1:02:34Speaker 14: our goal is in Chicago. And there's you know, there's
- 1:02:36Speaker 14: probably half a dozen teams out there that feel that
- 1:02:38Speaker 14: way as well.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: Talking Major League Baseball with Geen Watson here from the
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: Chicago White Sox front office here on thirteen hundred the
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: Zone today MLB called the Tokyo Series between the Dodgers
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: and Cups is the largest standalone international event in MLB history.
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: And of course where you have Showe.
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: Aotani and and of course with the with the newbies
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: and also with players of Japanese descent on both sides,
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: that it was it was going to probably be a success.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: Certainly in Japan.
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: It drew an average of more than twenty five million
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: viewers across all platforms, making it the most watched Major
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: League Baseball game ever in Japan, and the two game
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: series averaged more than twenty four million viewers that eclipse
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: the series in Soul Korea the year before. By nearly
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: seven million, so merchandising sales up all of that, the
- 1:03:34Speaker 1: fan fest drew more than four.
- 1:03:35Speaker 2: Hundred and fifty thousand.
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: Whether the Dodgers and were the Cubs or other teams
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: that have a Japanese attraction and ties to the nation
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: of Japan on their roster, you think this is the
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: thing to stay going forward, or at least in playing
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: more international series.
- 1:03:56Speaker 14: And I do believe that this is just going to
- 1:03:59Speaker 14: create more interest in the Japanese players coming over to
- 1:04:02Speaker 14: Major League Baseball. To become a global entity and to
- 1:04:06Speaker 14: be able to market yourself globally, it is just enormous,
- 1:04:09Speaker 14: and you know, we we feel like moving forward, we're
- 1:04:12Speaker 14: going to be very involved in Japan. I'm going to
- 1:04:14Speaker 14: Japan in August for the first time and we're going
- 1:04:16Speaker 14: to be in that market. And it's just something that
- 1:04:19Speaker 14: Major League Baseball has done such a great job with.
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: And it's becoming more and more of a global game.
- 1:04:26Speaker 14: But when the Japanese stars come over here and they
- 1:04:29Speaker 14: have a chance to go back over there, it just
- 1:04:30Speaker 14: creates so much interest for them individually in both nations,
- 1:04:34Speaker 14: and it's something that's going to continue to go moving forward.
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: I'm trying to picture you in a come on them.
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: I'm trying to trying to see if I can picture
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: that something. I don't know.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: I think maybe you go and get one of those
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: big sumo cuts or something like that. Yeah, okay, all right,
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: uh let me let me get your thoughts on injuries,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: John Gray, tough break there, literally and figuratively.
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: With the Rangers.
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: You darve she's going to open the season on the
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: on the eel for the Padres as well.
- 1:05:06Speaker 2: We've seen some guys get injured. We've talked about obviously.
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: I don't think we've because I've been traveling so much,
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: haven't had a chance to have you on the year
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: since Garrett Cole the announcement coming down that he's been
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: shelved for the season. What about your thoughts on how
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: the injury buck has really reared its ugly head during
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: the spring training days.
- 1:05:26Speaker 14: Well, it's really unfortunate and what you're really hoping for,
- 1:05:29Speaker 14: and you know, we we've had one as well with
- 1:05:31Speaker 14: Mason Adams.
- 1:05:32Speaker 2: Going down our number one starter arguably.
- 1:05:35Speaker 14: And what you're really hoping for is the long term
- 1:05:38Speaker 14: injury not taking place, because you know, most clubs last
- 1:05:42Speaker 14: year used between thirty five and fifty pitchers on their roster,
- 1:05:48Speaker 14: and that number is going to escalate this year, and
- 1:05:50Speaker 14: so you're going to see a lot of teams out
- 1:05:52Speaker 14: of the gate just trying to sustain inventory and have
- 1:05:56Speaker 14: conversations with pitchers that have out to say, hey, look
- 1:05:59Speaker 14: just look at the numbers from the last three years
- 1:06:01Speaker 14: and the number of injuries.
- 1:06:02Speaker 2: You're going to get your opportunity here.
- 1:06:03Speaker 14: The problem is is other organizations have a greater need
- 1:06:06Speaker 14: than you have, and so they have opportunities in other organizations,
- 1:06:09Speaker 14: and so it's really going to be a musical chairs,
- 1:06:12Speaker 14: especially through the summer when it eats up of just
- 1:06:16Speaker 14: a revolving door of one any relievers that are out
- 1:06:19Speaker 14: of options bouncing from team to team, and you're just
- 1:06:21Speaker 14: trying to catch lightning in a bottle of performance. But
- 1:06:24Speaker 14: we have a real issue from a supplied demand standpoint
- 1:06:28Speaker 14: in our game with a number of injuries that are happening,
- 1:06:30Speaker 14: the pitchers that are going down, and the real unfortunate
- 1:06:33Speaker 14: ones are when they're long term injuries of twelve to
- 1:06:35Speaker 14: eighteen months and you have to pull out from the
- 1:06:38Speaker 14: minor leagues and independent leagues because then your product goes down,
- 1:06:41Speaker 14: and so it's something that's going to have to be
- 1:06:43Speaker 14: addressed by the league and years to come.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Do you you feel that there will be any.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: I don't know of change in philosophy is the proper
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: phraseology for this.
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: But you've talked about it.
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: You've spoken eloquently about in the past that the demand,
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: the absolute demand of ball clubs and organizations to have
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: hard throwers. You think is the direct correlation between what
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: has happened with that and with the rise of UCL
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: injuries and Tommy John surgeries and things like that. Do
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: you foresee any kind of I don't know if change
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: in philosophy is the right way to put it, but
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: maybe some alteration in terms of some of the thinking
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: in how it goes for a ball club and an
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: organization trying to build with good arms yet not run
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: the risk of damaging those arms.
- 1:07:42Speaker 14: Craig I would speak from the rooftops to our amateur
- 1:07:46Speaker 14: coaches and the amateur system in the United States of America.
- 1:07:50Speaker 2: That we have to stop chasing velocity. We've got to
- 1:07:53Speaker 2: stop with the pitch shape and the pitch.
- 1:07:55Speaker 14: Design and the chasing velocity and having thousands of pictures
- 1:08:00Speaker 14: can throw ninety five to one hundred. But none of
- 1:08:02Speaker 14: them can throw strikes, none of them control the running game,
- 1:08:05Speaker 14: none of them can none of them can land a
- 1:08:07Speaker 14: breaking ball for a strike, none of.
- 1:08:09Speaker 2: Them have thirty pitches.
- 1:08:10Speaker 14: And we're just we're just running our arms out of
- 1:08:13Speaker 14: the game in a chase for velocity because most people
- 1:08:16Speaker 14: will tell you if you don't.
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: Throw hard, you don't have a chance.
- 1:08:19Speaker 14: And I non prospect ninety five miles an hour every day,
- 1:08:23Speaker 14: every day. But the messaging within our amateur system across
- 1:08:26Speaker 14: the United States is that if you don't throw hard,
- 1:08:29Speaker 14: you won't get a look, which is completely false.
- 1:08:32Speaker 2: One.
- 1:08:32Speaker 14: But secondly, there's so much more to being a good
- 1:08:35Speaker 14: pitcher than just having velocity. But the message is velocity,
- 1:08:39Speaker 14: pitch shape, pitch design. And when you say.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: That, you're kind of the old man in the room.
- 1:08:45Speaker 14: But we've got more sports science than we've ever had,
- 1:08:48Speaker 14: we've got more money than we've ever had, we've got
- 1:08:50Speaker 14: more information than we ever had, and we also have
- 1:08:53Speaker 14: more injuries than we've ever had. And it's something that
- 1:08:56Speaker 14: I think that we have to look at from an
- 1:08:57Speaker 14: amateur system and just slow the train down on the
- 1:09:00Speaker 14: velocity chase, and let's get back to teaching kids how
- 1:09:04Speaker 14: to pitch and not just chase velocity.
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: Do you think it's becoming all or nothing, no in between?
- 1:09:10Speaker 1: On that because of the chasing velo and wanting to
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: see hard throwers, that the direction in coaching pitching and
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: teaching pitching has gone away from developing third pitches or
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: fourth pitches or whatever, and holding runners and PfP and
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: all the other important elements that make a good pitcher
- 1:09:32Speaker 1: a complete pitcher.
- 1:09:34Speaker 2: That maybe some of that.
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: Has been set aside in the name of chasing more miles.
- 1:09:39Speaker 14: Per hour one hundred percent because it's about money. And
- 1:09:43Speaker 14: if I can take a kid that throws eighty five
- 1:09:46Speaker 14: and make them throw ninety five, I'm going to profit
- 1:09:49Speaker 14: off of that, not only with that player, but also
- 1:09:52Speaker 14: with my resume in you know, showing other parents, Hey,
- 1:09:56Speaker 14: look how much harder I can make your kid throw.
- 1:09:58Speaker 14: But they don't learn the little things about being a
- 1:10:02Speaker 14: good pitcher, controlling the running game. They don't learn how
- 1:10:05Speaker 14: to land a breaking ball. It's all about, you know,
- 1:10:09Speaker 14: a vertical ride and inverted break and spin rates. But
- 1:10:13Speaker 14: but you can't throw strike. And I probably get one
- 1:10:16Speaker 14: hundred videos sent to me every day of independent league
- 1:10:19Speaker 14: guys guys are out of the game that are released
- 1:10:21Speaker 14: and they're sending me videos throwing ninety five to one
- 1:10:24Speaker 14: hundred and it's a ten pitch video on nine of
- 1:10:25Speaker 14: the pitches or balls, and and you know, so it's
- 1:10:29Speaker 14: just we have to refocus it as an industry what
- 1:10:33Speaker 14: we think is important. Velocity one hundred percent, it's important,
- 1:10:36Speaker 14: but there's so many other attributes to being a great
- 1:10:39Speaker 14: pitcher that involved that we have to like rewire the
- 1:10:42Speaker 14: system and change the way people are thinking about pitching overall.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: He's Geen Watson from the Chicagana White Hots front office.
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: We talk Major League Baseball during Are you finally ready
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: to get the season underway?
- 1:10:54Speaker 2: Now? Finally starting playing games that matter? Yeah, one hundred percent.
- 1:10:58Speaker 14: I'm gonna be back in Houston for the weekend Sunday
- 1:11:01Speaker 14: and then fly to Chicago for the Oprah Thursday, and
- 1:11:04Speaker 14: then I'll be on the draft trail for about three
- 1:11:06Speaker 14: weeks and hopefully I'll run into you somewhere.
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, I hope.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: So absolutely, Thanks Gine, I appreciate it. Have a great weekend.
- 1:11:12Speaker 2: Treig Hoo, come see it. You bet. That's Gene Watson
- 1:11:15Speaker 2: from the Chicago White Sox. Front office.
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: All right, we've got more coming up. We're gonna hear
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: more from Vick Schaeffer, Texas women's head coach, from that
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: pre tournament news conference today. That's up next here on
- 1:11:25Speaker 1: thirteen under the zone.
- 1:11:26Speaker 3: It's almost time for the Texas women's basketball team to
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: take the court in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: Here's more sound from fix Schaeffer and his media availability
- 1:11:36Speaker 3: earlier today as Texas preveyors for William and Mary tomorrow night.
- 1:11:41Speaker 13: There was a period of time where the NCUBA took
- 1:11:44Speaker 13: the first two rounds away from campuses put them at
- 1:11:47Speaker 13: neutral sites. Obviously, it's back home now. With the interest
- 1:11:51Speaker 13: in the popularity of women's basketball now, should the nc
- 1:11:54Speaker 13: DOUBA consider moving the first two rounds back to neutral sites?
- 1:11:58Speaker 6: You know, you know, it's been a while since we
- 1:12:01Speaker 6: did that. I think by giving teams the reward of
- 1:12:11Speaker 6: being able to host, I think we're in a good
- 1:12:14Speaker 6: place with that. I would like to see us go
- 1:12:17Speaker 6: back to four sites for the regionals. Having eight teams
- 1:12:21Speaker 6: at one place is problematic.
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: You know, we experienced that last year.
- 1:12:26Speaker 6: From practice times available to shoot around times available, and
- 1:12:30Speaker 6: you've got eight people trying to run through there before
- 1:12:33Speaker 6: that first game. So I would like to see us
- 1:12:36Speaker 6: go back to regionals. Plus, I think you can then
- 1:12:38Speaker 6: keep teams in their region a little bit right now,
- 1:12:41Speaker 6: you got them here and there.
- 1:12:43Speaker 7: You know, at least this year we do have a
- 1:12:45Speaker 7: semi Midwest.
- 1:12:47Speaker 6: I mean it's a whole lot more Midwest than up
- 1:12:50Speaker 6: you know in the East, where you had West Coast
- 1:12:52Speaker 6: and East Coast. So but again, if I had a vote,
- 1:12:57Speaker 6: which I don't and they're not calling me to ask,
- 1:13:00Speaker 6: but if I had, I would like to see us
- 1:13:02Speaker 6: go back to four sweet sixteens, you know, where you
- 1:13:06Speaker 6: have four teams at a place.
- 1:13:08Speaker 7: But you know, again, because.
- 1:13:11Speaker 6: Of our sport and because there's so much attention and
- 1:13:15Speaker 6: so much support for it right now, I think it's
- 1:13:18Speaker 6: an evolving thing that they have to look at each
- 1:13:20Speaker 6: and every year.
- 1:13:22Speaker 7: I just like, well, no, I'll leave alone.
- 1:13:24Speaker 2: Thank you for that, coach, Next question please, Travis Rachel,
- 1:13:28Speaker 2: Spectrum News coach.
- 1:13:30Speaker 3: I was just talking to Kyla in the locker room
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: and she was telling me a couple of years ago
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: she had a pretty serious health scare that changed her perspective.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: What do you see from her attitude and effort every day.
- 1:13:41Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:13:41Speaker 6: I went up to her yesterday and said, man, I
- 1:13:44Speaker 6: am really glad you're here at Texas. You know, Kylea Is,
- 1:13:50Speaker 6: she's just a wonderful young lady. You look at her,
- 1:13:54Speaker 6: You don't get to see what I get to see
- 1:13:56Speaker 6: every day. She's got a personality, she's she's just a
- 1:14:03Speaker 6: special kid, you guys, all y'all see is that look?
- 1:14:07Speaker 6: You know, that that she's got when she's playing and
- 1:14:10Speaker 6: on the floor. And I see her a lot differently,
- 1:14:15Speaker 6: you know, I get to see her in so many
- 1:14:16Speaker 6: different ways, but she is you know, I've told the story.
- 1:14:20Speaker 6: She's the only kid I've ever recruited that asked me
- 1:14:22Speaker 6: to work her out on her visit, you know, And
- 1:14:26Speaker 6: she just a special kid.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: Man. I love her. Her teammates love her.
- 1:14:31Speaker 6: She's a She's becoming more and more comfortable as a
- 1:14:34Speaker 6: vocal person. I look for her next year to be
- 1:14:37Speaker 6: one of our vocal leaders. And uh, you know the
- 1:14:42Speaker 6: thing about it is she can back it up physically too,
- 1:14:45Speaker 6: and so it's, uh, you know, she's she's gonna be
- 1:14:48Speaker 6: great when times she.
- 1:14:50Speaker 2: Gets out of here.
- 1:14:50Speaker 6: You know, in another year, she's going to be another
- 1:14:53Speaker 6: one that's going to go on and have a great career.
- 1:14:57Speaker 15: We have time for one more question, Chip Chip Brown
- 1:15:00Speaker 15: Horns twenty four seven VIC in the LSU game here, Uh,
- 1:15:07Speaker 15: Bree and Jordan came in and kind of gave the
- 1:15:10Speaker 15: team a spark.
- 1:15:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:15:12Speaker 15: Can you talk about the chemistry of those two in
- 1:15:16Speaker 15: the fact that they're like that's friends.
- 1:15:18Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, that's Uh those two are.
- 1:15:25Speaker 7: There are energizer bunnies.
- 1:15:27Speaker 6: You know, if you pay attention over there on the
- 1:15:28Speaker 6: bench now, they're living and dying with everything that happens
- 1:15:31Speaker 6: on the floor with their teammates.
- 1:15:33Speaker 4: Uh.
- 1:15:33Speaker 6: They celebrate everything good over there. They are animated. They're
- 1:15:39Speaker 6: such good teammates. They're the energizer bunnies.
- 1:15:44Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:15:45Speaker 6: And then you know they they come in the game
- 1:15:47Speaker 6: and usually change it. You know, they're they make plays
- 1:15:51Speaker 6: there in their plays they make y'all. You know, bring
- 1:15:53Speaker 6: on a Preston, she's roaring on steroids. You know when
- 1:15:58Speaker 6: it comes to a speed and in quickness thing. I mean,
- 1:16:02Speaker 6: Rory's really fast, like Preston is electric. You know, That's
- 1:16:06Speaker 6: how I described those two. And you know, I just
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: think that both of them have meant so much to
- 1:16:14Speaker 6: the success of our program this year, They've provided depth
- 1:16:18Speaker 6: that I haven't had, you know, my whole time here
- 1:16:21Speaker 6: at Guard.
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: And you know.
- 1:16:26Speaker 6: I've heard, you know, Coach Harston mentioned to me, you know,
- 1:16:30Speaker 6: early on back in the summer about Man, you know,
- 1:16:33Speaker 6: talking about Preston Man. That's your kind of Guard Vic,
- 1:16:36Speaker 6: you know, just uh, just talking. And then of course
- 1:16:42Speaker 6: Jordan Lee, when we were recruiting her, I knew she
- 1:16:45Speaker 6: was way ahead of the curve defensively. She was a
- 1:16:48Speaker 6: great help defender. She's really good on ball. She communicates,
- 1:16:51Speaker 6: she talks, and and so she provides that that most
- 1:16:57Speaker 6: freshmen don't do.
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: You know, they just don't.
- 1:17:00Speaker 6: They're not either confident in doing that or it's not
- 1:17:03Speaker 6: something they're they have a habit of doing. But Jordan
- 1:17:07Speaker 6: was did that in high school and she brought that
- 1:17:10Speaker 6: with her. She is a confident kid. She doesn't worry,
- 1:17:14Speaker 6: you know, about whether that's.
- 1:17:15Speaker 2: Cool or not.
- 1:17:16Speaker 6: You know, kids, hear me tell them all the time, Hey,
- 1:17:19Speaker 6: this ain't about being cool or playing cool. You know,
- 1:17:21Speaker 6: cool don't win. And she's man, she's both. Those kids
- 1:17:26Speaker 6: have been so special and have added a really uh
- 1:17:31Speaker 6: dynamic and uh necessary dimension to our team. And again
- 1:17:38Speaker 6: that's the to me, that's our future.
- 1:17:41Speaker 7: You start thinking.
- 1:17:42Speaker 6: About those two in in in book, our guards for
- 1:17:46Speaker 6: the future are are really really you know, I think
- 1:17:48Speaker 6: we're in a great place right now. And uh and
- 1:17:52Speaker 6: so again, those two kids are I don't want to
- 1:17:56Speaker 6: say they're the class clowns, but they're they're there are
- 1:18:00Speaker 6: a lot of fun to be around, you know, and
- 1:18:02Speaker 6: they keep things loose, you know. I'm telling y'all, they
- 1:18:05Speaker 6: got all the dance moves, like it is. I told
- 1:18:10Speaker 6: them this one time, joking like, if they ever take
- 1:18:14Speaker 6: anybody with them to the club to dance, that'll be
- 1:18:16Speaker 6: the last time anybody goes with them, because those two
- 1:18:18Speaker 6: ain't coming off the floor.
- 1:18:20Speaker 2: And by the time the two o'clock.
- 1:18:22Speaker 6: Horn sounds and you gotta leave, they'll be wanting to stay,
- 1:18:25Speaker 6: and the other person will be going to no, we
- 1:18:27Speaker 6: have to go now, because they will absolutely wear them out.
- 1:18:31Speaker 6: They are just full of juice and energy and they're
- 1:18:35Speaker 6: just a lot of fun.
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: To be around.
- 1:18:36Speaker 6: They're great kids. And again you have to give their
- 1:18:39Speaker 6: parents credit. They come from wonderful families, absolutely wonderful, wonderful families,
- 1:18:45Speaker 6: and that's why those kids are as solid as they
- 1:18:48Speaker 6: can be.
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: All Right, there it is Vic Schaeffer with his comments
- 1:18:53Speaker 1: today from that press conference and again the game tomorrow
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: night's gonna tip off right out about eight forty five
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: will beyond the air already one of three point one
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: FM as we bring you the Texas matchup against William
- 1:19:06Speaker 1: and Mary. We'll be back to wrap up today's edition
- 1:19:08Speaker 1: of the program from here at UFC a dish fault
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: field on thirteen under the Zone. Our our good friend
- 1:19:13Speaker 1: and our colleague, our our partner from thirteen under the Zone,
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: Mike Hardball Harge is here a host of course of
- 1:19:19Speaker 1: the morning kickoff with Mark, Henry and Uh. I wanted
- 1:19:25Speaker 1: to give you the opportunity to pass this word along
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: because you are much closer to the situation and understand it.
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: But we've had the tragic loss of a lifetime long warning,
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: one of the greatest to ever play the game of
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: football at ut.
- 1:19:39Speaker 16: No doubt you know it was unfortunate passing of one
- 1:19:44Speaker 16: Kenneth Simms, the pride of Grosbeck and Cassi. Texas missed
- 1:19:49Speaker 16: a two five fo as I like to call him,
- 1:19:51Speaker 16: but back then when he was growing up, it was
- 1:19:52Speaker 16: eight one seven, that's right, But yes, it was a
- 1:19:58Speaker 16: kind of a chilling day if you wanted to put
- 1:20:01Speaker 16: it in words, because of the fact that we all
- 1:20:03Speaker 16: know who Kenny Simms is, and you know, one of
- 1:20:06Speaker 16: the most jovial guys that you'll ever meet, but when
- 1:20:09Speaker 16: you saw him on the field, you knew he was
- 1:20:10Speaker 16: there to handle that business.
- 1:20:12Speaker 7: And I got a call today that.
- 1:20:15Speaker 16: There was some things going on and I had to
- 1:20:17Speaker 16: go over and wanted to check in myself. And it
- 1:20:22Speaker 16: was unfortunate that when I got there that they said
- 1:20:25Speaker 16: that he had passed away peacefully. But it was still
- 1:20:29Speaker 16: one of those things it's really hard to believe because
- 1:20:32Speaker 16: here's a man that lived life to the fullest, and
- 1:20:35Speaker 16: you know, his story is well documented, but he was
- 1:20:38Speaker 16: one of those guys that would definitely give you his
- 1:20:41Speaker 16: shirt off his back. He was one of those guys
- 1:20:43Speaker 16: that really loved Texas athletics. He was pride and joy
- 1:20:47Speaker 16: of Texas Athletics. And I was glad to be a
- 1:20:50Speaker 16: part of his journey into the College Football Hall of
- 1:20:54Speaker 16: Fame because I was invited by Kenny Simms to go
- 1:20:58Speaker 16: to the College Football Hall of Fame with him with
- 1:21:01Speaker 16: his family, my family, and it was one of the
- 1:21:03Speaker 16: proudest moments that I ever got a chance to see
- 1:21:07Speaker 16: him be recognized for his excellence.
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: Yeah arrived on the UT campus as a freshman nineteen
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: seventy eight impact performer. He recorded three hundred twenty two tackles,
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: twenty nine sacks, fifty tackles for lost, fifteen force fumbles,
- 1:21:24Speaker 1: seventh FuMB recoveries, three block kicks, and earned consensus All
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: American the first team All Southwest Conference honors in each
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: of his final two seasons as Texas and finished eighth
- 1:21:36Speaker 1: in Heisman voting and received three first place votes in
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: nineteen eighty one, and then, of course selected by the
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: New England Patriots the first the number one overall pick
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: in the.
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: Nineteen eighty two draft.
- 1:21:48Speaker 1: Played eight seasons with the Patriots, including the nineteen eighty
- 1:21:51Speaker 1: five AFC championship team when they went to the Super Bowl,
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: and finished his professional career with seventeen sacks at seventy
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: four games, and trined in the Texas Athletics Hall of
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: Honors the class and part of the Class of nineteen
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: ninety seven, and of course, he into the College Football
- 1:22:05Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. As Harts has told you, in twenty
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: twenty one, he was sixty five.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: And he will be missed because he was he.
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: Was a part of so many things that that was
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: going on with UT athletics.
- 1:22:18Speaker 16: Yeah, and you know, he also started a scholarship program
- 1:22:23Speaker 16: for the women's basketball team. He was really proud of
- 1:22:27Speaker 16: the women's athletics. Him and Jody Conrad were really good friends.
- 1:22:31Speaker 16: And he did everything. Him and Chris Plonski, they always
- 1:22:34Speaker 16: did something for the ladies. And you know, as I said,
- 1:22:38Speaker 16: he's a gentle giant, but he was.
- 1:22:39Speaker 2: More than that.
- 1:22:40Speaker 16: I mean, he was so intelligent and was always helping
- 1:22:44Speaker 16: and giving back and trying to support the kids. And
- 1:22:48Speaker 16: and he's definitely going to be missed. I know I
- 1:22:51Speaker 16: speak for a lot of people that know him. My
- 1:22:55Speaker 16: family is hurting today because we lost a great man.
- 1:22:58Speaker 16: And not only that, he was more of a mentor
- 1:23:02Speaker 16: to me about this business that we're in right now
- 1:23:06Speaker 16: because he was a guest host on so many people.
- 1:23:09Speaker 1: But you brought him out for the NFL Draft party,
- 1:23:12Speaker 1: and that will say that was a great show.
- 1:23:13Speaker 2: We had a lot of fun last April, right.
- 1:23:15Speaker 7: We had that.
- 1:23:16Speaker 16: And then you know you talk about Brian Jones and
- 1:23:18Speaker 16: Derek Johnson and and and Norm Watkins, guys that he mentored,
- 1:23:24Speaker 16: and then you can go all the way back to
- 1:23:25Speaker 16: Stony Clark and all those guys. But it was more
- 1:23:28Speaker 16: than just the football part of it. It was the
- 1:23:30Speaker 16: life aspect that he brought to everybody every single day.
- 1:23:34Speaker 16: And I, you know, I had I had to make
- 1:23:36Speaker 16: that call to uh a lot of his friends and
- 1:23:39Speaker 16: and it was one of the hardest calls that I
- 1:23:40Speaker 16: had to make. And I had to make that call
- 1:23:42Speaker 16: for our our late great friend Shawn Adams as well.
- 1:23:45Speaker 16: And it's just one of those things that when you
- 1:23:48Speaker 16: lose guys like that, you know, Shawn Adams and the
- 1:23:52Speaker 16: the the Kenneth Simms, not you don't. You're not the
- 1:23:56Speaker 16: only one hurting. It's the people that admired him as well,
- 1:24:00Speaker 16: So you don't know all those other people that had
- 1:24:02Speaker 16: a relationship to him as well.
