- 0:00You are listening to the Amoda Maa podcast.
- 0:01In this series, Amoda explores her essential teaching through conversation and excerpts
- 0:02from interviews and events.
- 0:03Thanks for listening and we hope you enjoy.
- 0:04I'd like to speak a little more about clear seeing.
- 0:05And just to remind ourselves
- 0:06listen to receive, not just with a linear grasping mind that wants to attach to the words
- 0:07to remember the words, to hold on to the words. Because then it will compare words with words.
- 0:08What was said yesterday with what is said today, what will be said tomorrow, what was
- 0:09said in a book. To listen with the whole being with your heart, with your body, with your
- 0:10soul with your depth because all words are simply circling around the same. It's not
- 0:11linear. It's not a theory. It's not something to learn. They're all circling around the
- 0:12the same. What is the same? If we put words to it, then it becomes a whole load of different
- 0:13things but let's put some words to it. Truth. Freedom. Awakening.
- 0:14and ultimately love. The undoing of the tight not of self, the undoing of identity, the
- 0:15seeing through the continual movements of self-activity, ego activity. It's all pointing
- 0:16to the same and spoken of using slightly different words each time, approaching it from slightly
- 0:17different angles, but all the same. So there's no step by step. There's no do this, do this,
- 0:18learn this, and then you'll get here. So I just say that as a reminder that what's about
- 0:19to be offered today, let's see, is the same as yesterday and the day before.
- 0:20Now we'll come from the approach of clear seeing today, because that's what awakening
- 0:21is. Waking up out of the myopic lens of ego self, of me identity. Because what we call
- 0:22seeing is not really seeing at all. We see through the lens of accumulated memories,
- 0:23beliefs, desires, fears, preferences. It's as if all experience, all that we experience
- 0:24gets drawn into the orbit of the Me Self.
- 0:25My thoughts, my feelings, my fear, my hope,
- 0:26It all gets claimed by the 'me'. Experience is not free because the 'me' claims it,
- 0:27And in claiming it, it reinforces the centre called 'me'.
- 0:28Awareness does not operate in that way.
- 0:29When everything is drawn into the centre, there is comparison.
- 0:30Comparison between this experience and that experience.
- 0:31This is a better experience, this is a worse experience.
- 0:32There is comparison, there is judgement.
- 0:33This should be happening, this shouldn't be happening.
- 0:34This shouldn't have happened.
- 0:35And then there is judgment on the Self because that happened or this is happening.
- 0:36So the Self, the Me Self, claims everything.
- 0:37There is comparison, there is judgment and there is categorising.
- 0:38And we put this experience where there is a thought, a feeling, a circumstance, a sensation
- 0:39into this box or that box.
- 0:40We divide reality, we divide experience.
- 0:41This is a function, an unconscious function, of the 'me' self.
- 0:42Awareness is not of that order.
- 0:43Awareness does not judge or categorise or criticise or compare.
- 0:44The ego loves to compare.
- 0:45"I'm better, I'm worse, he's better, he's worse, she's better, she's worse."
- 0:46They're better, they're worse.
- 0:47Constantly dividing.
- 0:48Reality.
- 0:49But then it's no longer reality, because it's been totally coloured by that lens of division.
- 0:50Awareness has nothing to do with that.
- 0:51Awareness simply sees what arises.
- 0:52There is no lens.
- 0:53What arises is what arises.
- 0:54It's quite simple really.
- 0:55innocent.
- 0:56Since awareness is what you are, prior to comparison or judgment or categorising, then
- 0:57it's very available.
- 0:58We could say that this quality of awareness is simply letting it be, letting water rises,
- 0:59letting experience be, not interfering, not interpreting because the interpretation is
- 1:00always a self-referencing, it's always about the 'me' self.
- 1:01And then if it's about the 'me', the 'me' has to have a strategy to protect itself, to defend itself,
- 1:02to overpower, to find its platform, either as superior or inferior.
- 1:03It loves either of those.
- 1:04Inferiority or victimhood or lesser than
- 1:05is just as much an ego strategy as superiority
- 1:06and overpowering and so on.
- 1:07They're both the same.
- 1:08Just opposite ends of the continuum, the polarity.
- 1:09Awareness has nothing to do with this. Your true nature has nothing to do with this.
- 1:10What arises is what arises, letting it be. It just is.
- 1:11That doesn't mean...
- 1:12We are circling around this again. It doesn't mean that you are passive.
- 1:13It doesn't mean you have withdrawn from life. It doesn't mean you are indifferent.
- 1:14On the contrary, life comes closer. Life as it is comes closer because there's no lens
- 1:15creating a distance between subject and object, object being the experiences which are put
- 1:16in all these different boxes. They're not objects anymore. They're appearances right here. So
- 1:17the living texture of life comes alive. Life becomes more vibrant. Even in its difficulty,
- 1:18Even in the challenges, even in the pain, even in what we call the darkness,
- 1:19becomes more vibrantly alive because awareness as your natural state is simply open, present,
- 1:20Undivided and undividing.
- 1:21It's not doing anything with experience.
- 1:22It's not interfering with experience.
- 1:23So subject and object come closer.
- 1:24This willingness to let it be, when we start, the most important place is letting be our
- 1:25own experience, feelings, emotions, thoughts, sensations. This willingness to let it be
- 1:26is what dissolves the 'me' centre.
- 1:27So it's not about trying to get rid of me, trying to transcend me,
- 1:28trying to meditate yourself out of me,
- 1:29[laughter]
- 1:30killing the ego, getting rid of the ego, yes?
- 1:31I use the word 'ego' and 'me' interchangeably.
- 1:32These are all strategies of the self, the 'me' self against itself.
- 1:33That's insanity, but perhaps in this short meditation today you might have got a sense
- 1:34that you can't actually find a 'me'.
- 1:35What is this 'me'?
- 1:36Well where is it?
- 1:37Is it tangible?
- 1:38So it's an imaginary thing, a construct, trying to get rid of itself.
- 1:39It's not going to work.
- 1:40No.
- 1:41The capacity to let it be, and it sounds like letting it be, is something that the self
- 1:42is doing, but we have to give it some concession here, because it seems to still be involved.
- 1:43But really it's pointing to the nature of awareness, which is very nature is letting
- 1:44it be.
- 1:45It just is, it's being itself.
- 1:46So as you are willing, more and more, to let experience be, so there's no interference,
- 1:47there's no judgment, there's no categorising, it becomes very subtle at this point.
- 1:48In the 'me' centre, which is that which ultimately is our torturer, gradually comes
- 1:49undone.
- 1:50It softens, it dissolves.
- 1:51The centre comes undone.
- 1:52And that allows life to come closer.
- 1:53So the distance between me and life and so on is just a lens, a veil that dissolves.
- 1:54Life becomes more alive, more here, more present, more open, more free.
- 1:55This is love.
- 1:56Love arises naturally when the distance between subject and object collapses, when there is
- 1:57There's no more lens between you and reality, between you and life.
- 1:58Love arises naturally.
- 1:59You don't have to try to be loving.
- 2:00You don't have to seek for love as a feeling, an emotion.
- 2:01It transcends all of that.
- 2:02The natural fragrance of love arises because you are no longer in the paradigm of separation.
- 2:03It says nothing to do with like-mindedness, liking everybody, loving everybody, everybody
- 2:04agreeing to the same beliefs, the same religion, the same this, the same nothing to do with
- 2:05that the multiplicity, the diversity, is just as it is, letting it be, but because there
- 2:06is no distance, no lens, then the unity, the unified field illuminates the unified field
- 2:07of awareness, of beingness illuminates all things. That's what makes it alive.
- 2:08A live presence, awake presence.
- 2:09It allows peace and happiness that is not dependent on circumstance, that is not dependent on
- 2:10experience that is not dependent on what appears. It's that which underlies all things. Love
- 2:11underlies all things. From the perspective of the self we've divided love into love is
- 2:12feeling good and when we feel bad, then it's not love. Love becomes a commodity, an object,
- 2:13something that we've drawn into the orbit of self and defined it. But that is not love,
- 2:14that is an image that we've created.
- 2:15Love is ever-present as a fragrance, as a subtle undercurrent.
- 2:16So, letting it be is a soft gaze.
- 2:17It's a soft inner gaze upon reality.
- 2:18Here we can become sensitive to that.
- 2:19It's an inner sensitivity, sensing, that's all it means, just sense.
- 2:20When we're tight on something, and this is wrong, this is right, you know,
- 2:21Or where we have a soft inner gaze upon reality, with sensory beings, everyone has this capacity.
- 2:22A soft inner gaze upon what arises.
- 2:23An irritating sound.
- 2:24Take away the irritating sound.
- 2:25The plane flying overhead when you're trying to sleep.
- 2:26The person talking too loudly on the train.
- 2:27Yes, perhaps some irritation arises in the nervous system, but still the soft inner gaze.
- 2:28It is as it is, letting it be, letting it be, even letting the irritation be.
- 2:29So what?
- 2:30All things are movements.
- 2:31First, there is this, then there is that.
- 2:32It changes. It's not what is that is the problem. It's the divided self that is the
- 2:33problem. This shouldn't be happening. That shouldn't be happening. This I like, that
- 2:34I don't like so on, so on, so on, so constant. Assessment. No. Again, it doesn't make you
- 2:35just whatever. It doesn't make you a doormat, doesn't make you, you know. Brings clear seeing.
- 2:36That's what clear seeing is. And out of clear seeing, there is natural discernment, discernment,
- 2:37judgment, natural boundaries, natural yes/no, not from a violent place. It is the movement
- 2:38of love, the expression of love, in harmony with the whole. So the soft inner gaze is
- 2:39simply the soft stop. When there is a pull, a movement, inevitably there will be towards
- 2:40grasping or rejecting or following that movement of irritation or judgment or so on, inevitably
- 2:41there will be a pull because these are the tendencies that have driven us for lifetime
- 2:42more lifetimes and the collective human condition. So there will be a pull with your willingness
- 2:43and your availability. There is something in you that will not follow that movement to
- 2:44its conclusion. That's the soft stop. It's not a hard stop. It's not a forcing of the
- 2:45yourself. You see the movement and allowing everything to be as it is. You don't follow
- 2:46it to its conclusion. The conclusion is this shouldn't be happening. I have to get rid
- 2:47of it. Or there's something wrong with me. Or there's something wrong with him or her.
- 2:48Or there's something wrong with the world. No, don't come to the conclusion. The soft
- 2:49stop is just this, ah, and there is a soft inner gaze. This is the heart of Tantra, not
- 2:50Tantra, Tantric methods, Tantric sex and all this, no, no, no. True Tantra is true seeing.
- 2:51Soft inner gaze.
- 2:52as if we choose, if you like, to take up this invitation.
- 2:53As we choose to take up this invitation, then there's nothing you need to do as such
- 2:54to awaken out of the dream of separation.
- 2:55Awareness, the soft gaze, let's say,
- 2:56is what allows the center to come undone.
- 2:57And by and by the veils of identity of me,
- 2:58It's not a psychological process in the conventional way,
- 2:59but you have to work out our personality
- 3:00and the different aspects and how we're going to rearrange them.
- 3:01It gradually dissolves itself.
- 3:02So we start to live without a centre.
- 3:03I know it's very common to say, I have to find my centre.
- 3:04I have to be centred, yes, on a more mind-body organism, not to be scattered and so on, to
- 3:05be grounded.
- 3:06But this is a different way of looking at it, because we're looking at clear seeing, we're
- 3:07speaking to freedom, liberation from the me identity, liberation from the tight knot,
- 3:08the prison of self, awakening out of the dream of separation.
- 3:09And paradoxically, living without a centre brings great presence, clarity and groundedness
- 3:10Because you know love and go living in the imagination.
- 3:11The lens, the division, these are all occlusions, obscurations.
- 3:12So you don't have to go looking for truth.
- 3:13Truth reveals itself when the self is empty.
- 3:14This is an emptying, yeah?
- 3:15An emptying of the Self.
- 3:16You don't become vacant.
- 3:17You become alive.
- 3:18Awake.
- 3:19Fully present.
- 3:20Without having to practice mindfulness.
- 3:21No practice.
- 3:22Only the willingness to let it be.
- 3:23Let it be.
