- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:08We hope that this podcast will help you to know Christ, grow in
- 0:11his Word, and show his love to others.
- 0:14Let's dive right in. Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk.
- 0:16Thank you for tuning back in. This is the final episode in the
- 0:21book of James and I have loved getting a walk through this
- 0:24portion of scripture with you. I hope it's been an
- 0:26encouragement. I recorded several of these
- 0:28episodes about a week and a half, two weeks ahead of time.
- 0:33And so I, I am right now as the time of this this episode comes
- 0:41out, I am currently in Dallas at the annual meeting of the
- 0:46Southern Baptist Convention and representing Tabernacle and
- 0:50getting to hear from missionaries and pastors and
- 0:54church planters and a really, really looking forward to that
- 0:57time together. So if you would say quick prayer
- 1:00for me as I'm there, that the Lord would continue to guide and
- 1:05to bless and that he would continue to help our cooperative
- 1:08program together that's been around for 100 years now.
- 1:12That it would continue to go forward and that the Kingdom of
- 1:15God would be would be blessed and and moved and built as
- 1:21Southern Baptist continue to work together for the faith of
- 1:24the Gospel. James chapter 5, the end of this
- 1:29book, James is writing to people that used to be a part of his
- 1:32congregation. Now they're scattered all across
- 1:34the Roman Empire, and he is writing to them to encourage
- 1:38them not just to live their Christian lives, but to live
- 1:43their Christian lives together. And so we're going to see that
- 1:46in verses 13 through 20 in some really special ways.
- 1:49If you are a part of our local congregation at Tabernacle, I
- 1:54hope that these verses will be a, an encouragement to you.
- 2:01And I hope that even as we've undergone some like structural
- 2:05changes at Tabernacle from kind of a more committee church
- 2:11council model of leadership to an elder LED model of
- 2:16leadership. I hope that even as we read
- 2:18through some of these verses, some of that might jump off the
- 2:22page at you a little bit. And you'll see, Oh yeah, I, I
- 2:25see it right there in the text. This, This is why some of these
- 2:28changes have been made. Verse #13 James says this.
- 2:32Is anyone among you suffering? This isn't speaking directly to
- 2:37like, physical suffering. This is emotional or spiritual
- 2:42suffering. It's a burden caused by perhaps
- 2:45misfortune or poor choices. If anyone is suffering, it says
- 2:50he should pray. Is anyone cheerful?
- 2:54He should sing praises. Is anyone among you sick?
- 2:59He should call for the elders of the church and they are to pray
- 3:03over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.
- 3:07The prayer of faith will save the sick person and the Lord
- 3:11will raise him up. If he has committed sins, he
- 3:14will be forgiven. Therefore, confess your sins to
- 3:18one another and pray for one another so that you may be
- 3:22healed. The prayer of a righteous person
- 3:26is very powerful in its effect. Elijah was a human being, as we
- 3:31are, and he prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and for
- 3:36three years and six months it did not rain on the land.
- 3:41Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain, and the land
- 3:44produced its fruit. My brothers and sisters, if any
- 3:48among you strays from the truth and someone turns him back, let
- 3:53that person know that whoever turns a Sinner from the error of
- 3:57his way will save his soul from death and cover a multitude of
- 4:03sins. All right, let's look at how we
- 4:06are encouraged to live life together from this passage
- 4:12within a local church number verse #13 we see first that our
- 4:18emotions are meant to draw us to God.
- 4:23Our emotions are meant to draw us to God.
- 4:27He says here, both with suffering and with cheerfulness,
- 4:30kind of the two different ways that you can live life.
- 4:34If you have difficulties, you pray over those when you are
- 4:40sad, when you are depressed, when you are anxious, when you
- 4:45are regretful or remorseful, when you are uncertain.
- 4:50All of those emotions that I would kind of file under
- 4:53suffering, all of those emotions guide us towards prayer, that we
- 4:59ask God to make us aware of what His will is, that we would
- 5:06follow in it. That certainly we can pray for
- 5:10God to change circumstances. There's nothing wrong there,
- 5:13nothing prohibited in Scripture in that like God, would you
- 5:16change this? Would you bring justice?
- 5:19Would you give me wisdom? Even as we read at the very
- 5:23beginning of the book, we can pray for all of those things,
- 5:26but suffering is not meant to just make you wallow.
- 5:30Suffering is not meant to make you be alone.
- 5:34Suffering is meant to drive you to the feet of God, that you to
- 5:38recognize you have a heavenly Father, you have a Lord and
- 5:42Master, and so you go to Him and you find out what He wants you
- 5:46to do within your suffering, within your situation.
- 5:49When you're suffering, you pray. Then is anyone cheerful?
- 5:53There's there's joy, there's happiness, there's excitement.
- 5:57What should our response be with that?
- 6:00We should sing praises. We've gone over this many, many
- 6:05times in in books, one through 4 of Psalms.
- 6:08God commands us to sing. Now for some of you that might
- 6:12be you need to sing at the top of your lungs.
- 6:16Frankly, I, I don't know everyone that's listening to
- 6:18Tabernacle talk. There might be some of you that
- 6:21God wants you to help out and serve in the ministry on like
- 6:25that, that frontline that's a ensemble that's at the front of
- 6:29the church. And God might have you be
- 6:31someone that you sing once a month or you sing, you know
- 6:35what? Once a once a season or
- 6:37something. And God might have you to sing
- 6:40praises and to encourage and uplift others in their praise of
- 6:46the Lord. Your cheerfulness, your
- 6:47happiness, your joy, your peace is not just meant to benefit
- 6:52you. It's meant to lift up Jesus.
- 6:55So when we suffer, we go to Jesus.
- 6:58When we are cheery, when we are joyful, when we're happy, we
- 7:03exalt Jesus and we lift him up. We let others know about how
- 7:07good our God is, and that ought to be our response when good
- 7:13things happen in our life. We point all the praise and all
- 7:16the glory to Jesus and we don't just point others to him.
- 7:20We go personally to him and we go like God, you are great and
- 7:24your greatness is unsearchable. We can call him our Good
- 7:27Shepherd, the one that guides us in every place where we ought to
- 7:31be. We can thank him for his
- 7:33provision and and sing about Gyra, the one that is enough and
- 7:36that provides for us in every moment of our lives.
- 7:40So that's verse 13. Our emotions are meant to drive
- 7:42us to Jesus. Then verses kind of 14 through
- 7:4818 is talking about prayer, and there's two things that are
- 7:54mentioned here. The first is, is anyone among
- 7:57you sick? Now, even from the context of
- 8:01these verses, I'm still just within my mind.
- 8:04I'm not 100% certain that this is not strictly talking about
- 8:12the sickness of sin within our life.
- 8:15And when a person has been overcome by sin and they are
- 8:22asking for help and help is given to them, they're prayed
- 8:27over, they confess their sins, there is accountability and
- 8:31discipleship that happens. And that person is then restored
- 8:35to a a place of a vibrant walk with the Lord as a result of
- 8:41humility, help, prayer, and discipleship.
- 8:45There is another aspect of this, though, that especially it
- 8:49within church history would lend itself to say it can also be
- 8:54physical sickness. Now verse #14 and 15 bereft of
- 9:01the rest of Scripture can create a false dichotomy from which
- 9:06people can be very hurt and harmed.
- 9:10And so some churches have just never engaged with versus 1415
- 9:16and never done the particular action prescribed because they
- 9:20don't want people to misunderstand and thus be be
- 9:26saddened or disheartened or embittered as a result of it.
- 9:30But hopefully as, as we take just a couple of minutes to talk
- 9:35about I, I think we'll see together what is and what is not
- 9:39being said. So he says, is anyone among you
- 9:42sick? He should call for the elders of
- 9:45the church. These would be the leaders, the
- 9:47the pastors, the overseers, if you got an old translation, the
- 9:51bishops of the church, these are the ones that are in charge of
- 9:56the local body of believers. So the sick person calls for
- 10:00those godly men, they are to pray over him, anointing him
- 10:06with oil in the name of the Lord.
- 10:11Olive oil was considered kind of a cure all ointment in the
- 10:14ancient world. But for James here, the real
- 10:17healing power is in prayer. So there's almost a thing of,
- 10:21yes, we're going to pray for him and we're going to have this
- 10:25healing medication that is being given as well.
- 10:29Scripture nowhere indicates that you should only seek
- 10:33supernatural means of healing or living or, or or of sustenance.
- 10:41Some people have looked at a verse like this and gone, OK,
- 10:44well, I don't need to, you know, undergo any treatments for my
- 10:48cancer. I can just pray and I'll be
- 10:52totally fine. That is not the way that
- 10:55Scripture lends itself at all. In fact, one of the individuals
- 10:59that wrote large swaths of Scripture, the Gospel of Luke
- 11:04and the Book of the Acts of the Holy Spirit or Acts of the
- 11:08Apostles, was a physician. Luke was a physician, and so
- 11:14certainly if God had a physician that was writing scripture, he
- 11:18is not against physicians. And being a physician or going
- 11:22to a physician is not something that should ever be looked down
- 11:26on and not something that should be ignored or neglected.
- 11:29Even here within prayer within the local church and people
- 11:32praying over someone, it's accompanied with a medicinal
- 11:37treatment of the time, namely olive oil.
- 11:41So as this person is being prayed over by the leaders of
- 11:46the church and they are anointed with oil, verse #15 says the the
- 11:51prayer of faith will save the sick person.
- 11:53Or as the New Living Translation puts it, such a prayer offered
- 11:58in faith will heal the sick. That is, this is not a magic
- 12:03remedy. If it was, if it was some
- 12:06incantation that as long as you follow this you can always have
- 12:10healing, then certainly, as we read in the end of Second
- 12:14Timothy chapter 4, the apostle Paul would not have left
- 12:19Trophimus sick in the city of myelitis.
- 12:23Because if all he needed to do was get the elders of the church
- 12:27together and have them anoint him with oil and pray over him,
- 12:31then he would be healed. This is not a guarantee.
- 12:36However, if there is, we can think back to James chapter one
- 12:41that when we come to God and we ask for wisdom and we come in
- 12:45faith and we come actually believing God and not doubting
- 12:50and not having a double mind of well God could could do this or
- 12:54he might not be able to do this. That person is not going to
- 12:58receive anything from the Lord. But just because we genuinely
- 13:02believe does not mean that God will grant our healing.
- 13:06Why would that be? Because God might have something
- 13:09better than your physical healing right now in mind.
- 13:15He might know that the physical hardship that you are going
- 13:21through it is drawing you towards Him.
- 13:24It is leading you to a repudiation of your own
- 13:28confidence in yourself, or a worship of 1000 different things
- 13:35of of your health, of your time, that you would perhaps without
- 13:41this difficulty you would fall to some temptation.
- 13:45You would forget God. You would there's 1000 different
- 13:49possibilities. I'm not God so I can't prescribe
- 13:52for you. Hey, here's why God is allowing
- 13:55this to take place in your life. But if you are going to God and
- 13:59if together you and the elders of your church are like man, we
- 14:03would love to see healing here. And healing does not happen.
- 14:07That doesn't mean God is not good or that God is not working
- 14:10in your behalf. In fact, it means God has
- 14:14something better in mind than even the most, you know,
- 14:19spiritual in your church. Realize that if God is saying no
- 14:25to multiple of his children, then you know that he has
- 14:30something else in store. And so in that moment we get to
- 14:33choose. Am I going to worship and follow
- 14:37a genie that always gives me what I want?
- 14:40Or am I going to say, OK God, you're my Lord and so I'm going
- 14:44to follow and believe you regardless of whether or not you
- 14:47do what I ask because I realize you're in control of my life.
- 14:51I'm not. So I want this.
- 14:53But if you're telling me no, then I know it's for a reason
- 14:55and I know that it's for my good, ultimate good, and for
- 14:59your glory. You can also realize this life
- 15:02is not the end. You are going to live for
- 15:05eternity. And in 300 billion years, it
- 15:09will not matter. Whatever physical illness you
- 15:13have right now, it could. It could legitimately be the
- 15:16most debilitating, awful thing that has ever affected anyone.
- 15:21In 300 billion years from now, you'll be like, oh wait, did I
- 15:27go through that? I didn't even realize I've just
- 15:30been with the Lord and with all of his people in paradise for so
- 15:35long. We, we will have no recognition
- 15:39or remembrance of the hardships and pain that we went through.
- 15:44Realize this is just the tiniest infinitesimal blip of of the
- 15:51length of our existence. And so just because God doesn't
- 15:54do something within the tiny blip of time that you want him
- 15:58to does not mean that he is not good.
- 16:00Realize he has given you all of eternity.
- 16:03And so even if we have to go through some hardships and some
- 16:07sufferings on the way to get to eternity, it will be worth it.
- 16:13So the elders, they anoint this person verse 15, the prayer of
- 16:16faith will save the sick person and if the Lord wills and the
- 16:21Lord will raise him up if he has committed sins, he will be
- 16:26forgiven when we confess our sins, He's faithful and just to
- 16:30forgive us our sins. And what what a joy here that
- 16:33there is, especially within the the context of this person with
- 16:39the church elders having an openness and an honesty to say
- 16:43like, Hey, here's some things that I'm struggling with.
- 16:45And it very well could be that God is putting me under some
- 16:50difficulty, some some sickness, some hardship right now to help
- 16:55draw my attention to the fact that I have some sin in my life.
- 16:59Not, not as a result, not as a punishment.
- 17:01It's not, oh, you did this sin or you're holding on to this.
- 17:04And so I'm going to curse you with blindness.
- 17:07I'm going to curse you with leprosy or whatever.
- 17:11That's not the way the Lord works.
- 17:12But he might be using your trial to draw attention to some sin in
- 17:17your life. Verse #16 Then James tells us.
- 17:20Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one
- 17:24another so that you may be healed again.
- 17:28We can think back to Job, as we learned last episode, and Job's
- 17:32friends that came and they were accusing him of being the reason
- 17:37that all of his hardships were happening, even though that was
- 17:40not the case. God told Job, OK, you need to
- 17:43pray for your friends because they spoke very presumptuously
- 17:49about me and my motives. And so as a result, you know
- 17:54that they're going to experience judgement unless you pray for
- 17:56their forgiveness. And Job did so, and his friends
- 18:01were forgiven. And then God bless Job in
- 18:04amazing ways. And so in a similar way, we're
- 18:07to confess our sins to one another, verse 16 and pray for
- 18:10one another so that we may be healed.
- 18:13And it says the the prayer of a righteous person is very
- 18:16powerful in its effect. Now there's a bad way to take
- 18:21this. And certainly many of us would
- 18:23would know about like confessional booths and we would
- 18:26see, you know, people that say, OK, just a pastor can have sins
- 18:32confessed to him and and he'll give you some, you know,
- 18:35spiritual prescription and you will find forgiveness that way.
- 18:39No, this is about within the local church that together,
- 18:43whether that's in a small Group, A men's Group, A ladies group,
- 18:47you know, a group of friends that pray together.
- 18:50It can be variety of ways. But when we confess our sins to
- 18:56one another, when we pray for each other, we find healing in
- 18:59that soul. Healing in that that our sins
- 19:02are not being kept hidden. They're brought out into the
- 19:07light. Our sin is shamed and we reject
- 19:12our sin personally and corporately within groups of
- 19:16believers. So I want to encourage you.
- 19:19That's not very popular in in American Christianity, but I am
- 19:23solidly convinced that this is the Bible way.
- 19:28Don't be afraid to tell another person, especially within your
- 19:34local church, especially friends within your local church, to be
- 19:36like, hey, I am struggling with this thing right now.
- 19:40Like, man, I, I've been drinking more than I should and I, I
- 19:45don't like what it's doing to me.
- 19:47You can have a person that's like, hey, I, I, I've been
- 19:50looking at some stuff that I shouldn't.
- 19:52Would you, you know, keep me accountable?
- 19:53Would you ask me next week? Like, hey, how's, how's it going
- 19:57with that? Are you, are you staying on the
- 20:00right path? It could be someone that's like.
- 20:03Man, I am just flying off the handle versus, you know, my my
- 20:06kids or versus my coworkers, and I just really need you to pray
- 20:09for me that I would have some patience and that I wouldn't be
- 20:12angry with this other person. And as we confess our sins to
- 20:16one another and we pray for each other, we can find healing in
- 20:21that. Do you have a sin that's just
- 20:22been kicking your butt for a while?
- 20:24Try confessing it to your brother or sister in the Lord,
- 20:28and as you pray together and as you're honest with each other,
- 20:33as you battle that, see what God can do to heal you.
- 20:38And then as an example of how effective prayer can be, James
- 20:42mentions the prophet Elijah and how Elijah prayed that there
- 20:46would be no rain on the earth. And this was in the time of the
- 20:50wicked king Ahab and his queen Jezebel.
- 20:53And it says Elijah, just a regular human.
- 20:56He prayed that it wouldn't rain in Israel.
- 20:58For 3 1/2 years. It did not rain.
- 21:01And he prayed again and it rained.
- 21:03And so he says there is power and prayer and believe it.
- 21:08God may not always do exactly what you want done when you want
- 21:12it done, but realize that when you go knocking on heaven's
- 21:15door, some things are going to happen.
- 21:18And verse #19 and 20 then, if you will, gives the A, A, a
- 21:24different outlook of the same scenario.
- 21:26So I could go to someone else and say, hey, I'm struggling
- 21:29with this sin. Would you pray with me?
- 21:31Would you help keep me accountable?
- 21:34That's one way to deal with sin in your life versus 19 and 20 is
- 21:38the opposite side. So this is different than the
- 21:41complaining, criticizing, judging that we read about in
- 21:45chapter 4. This is actual love.
- 21:50This is meaningful, constructive work within the body to pursue
- 21:58holiness together as the people of God.
- 22:01Some people think, OK, if you tell me that anything that I'm
- 22:04doing is wrong is sinful, that you're just being legalistic,
- 22:10you're judging whatever that is not how the Bible talks about
- 22:14it. Now, if you go up to someone and
- 22:16you're like, oh, listen, you're wearing, you know, a button up
- 22:20shirt and church. Don't you?
- 22:22Like this is a family. This isn't a business.
- 22:26And and you would want to, you know, wear something nice in the
- 22:30house or sorry, you would want to wear something comfy and real
- 22:33when you're in the house with your mom and dad.
- 22:36And so you need to take off that button up shirt and you just
- 22:39need to put on a T-shirt, something like that where it's
- 22:42extra, extra biblical. And I don't mean as in like
- 22:47there's biblical and that's good and extra biblical and that's
- 22:50really good. No, I mean, it is not found in
- 22:52the Bible. When you have stuff like that,
- 22:56that should never be the basis of why you're talking to someone
- 23:00else. Now, if someone else, they are
- 23:03lying, they're committing immorality, they are stealing.
- 23:07They are like angry and wrathful with another person.
- 23:12Maybe they're one of the ones that are judging or criticizing
- 23:15or complaining like we read about in chapter 4 verses 1920.
- 23:20If any, if any among you strays from the truth and someone turns
- 23:25him back, let that person know that whoever turns a Sinner from
- 23:30the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover a
- 23:35multitude of sins. When you go to that person that
- 23:39is struggling with legitimate sin, not just your pet,
- 23:42whatever. When you're going to someone
- 23:45that is struggling with legitimate sin in their life and
- 23:49you helped turn them back, that they are now pursuing Jesus and
- 23:53the love of God and the fruit of the Spirit instead of the sin
- 23:56that they were pursuing. Like James says, let the person
- 24:01that helped with the turning it around, let them know, yeah, you
- 24:05saved that person's soul from destruction and you covered over
- 24:11a multitude of things in that person's life that would have
- 24:14gone horribly. You helped save them from the
- 24:17wrong path. This encourages us speak into
- 24:22the lives of each other. Sometimes someone will come to
- 24:24us and be like, hey, I got a problem.
- 24:26Other times we will see the problem in someone else's life
- 24:29and the the aim should not be OK.
- 24:31Well, I'll tell the elders, and the elders will deal with that
- 24:36person's sin. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
- 24:39You go. You are equipped with the Spirit
- 24:42of God and the Word of God. You go to that person, you try
- 24:45and help that person and turn them back to the path of life.
- 24:49Because the path of sin, the path that is not leading to
- 24:54Jesus, that will destroy them. It'll destroy their
- 24:57relationships. It will destroy everything that
- 24:59they hold dear. And that is not the path that
- 25:01God has for them. So you play a part and you can
- 25:05help save someone's life in a manner of speaking, through
- 25:10turning them back the right direction.
- 25:12Now if they don't listen to you, then Matthew 18, then you can
- 25:16tell the others and be like, hey, would you help me out as
- 25:19we're trying to help this brother or sister out, that they
- 25:22would turn from sin, repent and turn back to the Savior.
- 25:26That is a great, wonderful, valuable thing to do.
- 25:31So today we learn our emotions are meant to lead us to God.
- 25:37We are to have belief in, in prayer, prayer for one another.
- 25:43And we ought to confess our sins to each other, have an openness,
- 25:49bring sin out into the light where it can be held accountable
- 25:53and, and God can help to heal us from our sin.
- 25:58And we ought to love each other that we pursue one another when
- 26:03we are in sin. And we we can turn people away
- 26:07from the path of death and destruction and sin back to the
- 26:11path that Jesus has called us to walk on.
- 26:14Well, thank you for journeying through the book of James with
- 26:17me. And I will be with you next time
- 26:20in the book of Joel in the Old Testament.
