- 0:00Chapter 2 from the book of Zechariah.
- 0:03First, let's pray. Dear Lord, thank you for this
- 0:08day. Thank you for everyone that
- 0:10we've interacted with or will interact with.
- 0:13And please let us know what your will is as we live each day.
- 0:21And when we read this chapter 2, please let the Holy Spirit give
- 0:25us wisdom and understanding and open our hearts and minds to
- 0:29what you have to say. We ask this in Jesus name.
- 0:34So then it's called a man with a measuring line.
- 0:38Then I looked up and there before me was a man with a
- 0:40measuring line in his hand. I asked, where are you going?
- 0:44He answered me to measure Jerusalem to find out how wide
- 0:49and how long it is. Now this is interesting because
- 0:53it doesn't. He doesn't say anything more.
- 0:56He says the next part verse 3 says while the Angel who was
- 1:01speaking to me was leaving, another Angel came to meet him
- 1:06and said to him, run, tell the young man that young man
- 1:10Jerusalem will be a city without walls because of the great
- 1:16number of people and animals in it.
- 1:18And I myself will be a wall of fire around it declares the Lord
- 1:24and I will be its glory within. Come, come, flee from the land
- 1:29of the north declares the Lord. For I have scattered you to the
- 1:33four winds of heaven declares the Lord.
- 1:37There's a lot in here. So first of all, it just, I
- 1:40don't, I don't know why he, he had this vision here of this man
- 1:49with a measuring line in his hand.
- 1:51And Zechariah asked, where are you going?
- 1:54And he said, I'm going to measure Jerusalem.
- 1:57But then he never tells him anything more about Jerusalem
- 2:01that he measured. So that's really interesting.
- 2:03But in the Book of Revelation, John has a very similar
- 2:09experience when he is talking with the Angel, and the Angel is
- 2:16supposed to measure the temple area and then is told, well,
- 2:20don't measure the outer court because that's going to be
- 2:22turned over to the Gentiles for 42 months.
- 2:26But then there's another part where Jerusalem's dimensions are
- 2:29given, and this is actually the New Jerusalem, though, and this
- 2:34will be shocking because when you hear what the New Jerusalem
- 2:37is going to be like, this is in Revelation 2116.
- 2:41When he measured it, he found it was square, as wide as it was
- 2:46long. In fact, its length and width
- 2:50and height were 1400 miles. Now I'm using the New Living
- 2:56translation because it converts those cubit measurements so we
- 3:01can understand in English what they're talking about.
- 3:04S 1400 miles. That's about, if you look at a
- 3:07map of the United States, that's roughly, just approximately
- 3:11about half the size from east to West in the United States.
- 3:15So this is the city of Jerusalem.
- 3:17It's going to be about that wide, and then it's going to be
- 3:21as tall as it is wide. I mean, it's just completely,
- 3:25you know, it's like a cube. And this will be the the new
- 3:30city. And then Revelation 21 gets into
- 3:33a lot more information about it, about the new Jerusalem, but
- 3:39that's not so much relevant to what we're talking about here.
- 3:43The study, by the way, half says why measure Jerusalem as the
- 3:47apostle John later did in Revelation 21, verses 15 through
- 3:5117, Zechariah was using symbolism to describe the extent
- 3:56of the blessings God's people would expect in the coming
- 3:59Kingdom. Well, that is true because it
- 4:02says to some extent Jerusalem will be a city without walls
- 4:07because of the great number of people and animals in it.
- 4:10That's what God's plan is to do. And this is the Angel that told
- 4:16Zechariah that it's, it's going to be really big.
- 4:19And then it he also says that there's going to be a wall of
- 4:22fire around it and the Lord will be the glory within.
- 4:27So this is going to be something different than what we have
- 4:30today. And he's also saying, come,
- 4:33come, flee from the land of the north.
- 4:36Now Zechariah at the time, I guess he's in Babylon at the
- 4:40time. So the study Bible talks about
- 4:44this in a certain way, but I don't know.
- 4:47I think this is just, you know, I an opinion about what it means
- 4:51because I don't think we can say we know for sure because if
- 4:56they're in Babylon, flee from the land of the north.
- 4:59If unless he's this is when he's been, I don't know if he's back
- 5:04in. I have to go back to look to see
- 5:07when he wrote this. It was written in about, well,
- 5:11between 5:20 and 480 BC, but I don't know if he had.
- 5:19Zechariah had been born in Babylon and he did get to go
- 5:25back to not back because he was never there before, but he was
- 5:29able to go to Jerusalem. But I don't really know at what
- 5:35point he went to Jerusalem or if at this time he was actually
- 5:43when he got this vision. If he was where he was, he
- 5:47couldn't have been because the Angel was leaving to measure
- 5:51Jerusalem. So that means he was in Babylon.
- 5:55In verse 2, it says the Angel was going to measure Jerusalem
- 5:59to find out how wide and along it was.
- 6:01And then he was leaving. And so another Angel came and
- 6:06and they he was talking about the future of what Jerusalem
- 6:09would be. So come Zion escape you who who
- 6:13live in daughter Babylon now and then it also OK, that's the
- 6:17verse 7. But it also says, you know, flee
- 6:20from the land of the north and then declares the Lord for I
- 6:25have scattered you to the four winds of heaven.
- 6:28That was really interesting thinking about scattering you to
- 6:31the four winds of heaven. He didn't say the four winds of
- 6:34earth. He said the four winds of
- 6:36heaven. So I looked at the study Bible.
- 6:40It doesn't really address that because I think it might be hard
- 6:43to figure out what they're talking about here.
- 6:46I'm wondering, you know, is this where God has, you know, some
- 6:50people may have suffered from punishment and passed on and
- 6:56they're in the heavenly realm. Why he said the four winds of
- 7:02heaven as opposed to the four winds of earth?
- 7:04Because they say both of them those terms in the Bible.
- 7:09So let's see in Revelation 18 verse 4, this is similar as the
- 7:20Zechariah and John are very similar with the things that
- 7:23they saw, the visions that they had.
- 7:24So Zechariah is told by the Angel to get out of Babylon, or
- 7:30you who live in daughter Babylon, it's like escape, get
- 7:33out of there. And in Revelation 18 verse 4,
- 7:37this is what John heard and saw in the vision.
- 7:41He said. Then I heard another voice from
- 7:42heaven say, Come out of her, my people, so that you will not
- 7:47share in her sins, so that you will not receive any of her
- 7:52plagues. For her sins are piled up to
- 7:55heaven, and God has remembered her crimes.
- 7:58Give back to her as she has given.
- 8:00Pay her back double for what she has done.
- 8:03Pour her a double portion from her own cup.
- 8:07Give her as much torment and grief as the glory and the
- 8:11luxury she gave herself. In her heart.
- 8:14She boasts, I sit enthroned as a queen.
- 8:19I am not a widow. I will never mourn.
- 8:23Therefore, in one day her plagues will overtake her death,
- 8:28mourning and famine. She will be consumed by fire,
- 8:32for mighty is the Lord who judges her.
- 8:36So Babylon is kind of a mystery. Ancient Babylon is in the modern
- 8:41day Iraq. But there's a little bit more to
- 8:45Babylon that comes out when you read Isaiah chapter 47, which
- 8:52talks about the fall of Babylon. This gets into, you know, when
- 8:56there's talking about virgin daughter Babylon, this if you
- 9:01search daughter Babylon, you'll find these verses.
- 9:03But this entire chapter when it talks about the fall of Babylon,
- 9:07I, I think just to get the idea of what's in here, I want to
- 9:11read the whole chapter, especially because chapter 2
- 9:13from Zechariah is really short. So the podcast shouldn't be very
- 9:16long. But the fall of Babylon, this to
- 9:19me sounds like it is something spiritual, supernatural in the
- 9:25heavenly realms, perhaps that there is some entity that's
- 9:29related. And maybe you'll see as I read
- 9:33through this. So I'm going to start reading
- 9:34the fall of Babylon in Isaiah chapter 47.
- 9:38Go, go down. Sit in the dust, virgin daughter
- 9:41Babylon. Sit on the ground without a
- 9:44throne. Queen City of the Babylonians.
- 9:48No more will you be called tender or delicate.
- 9:52Take millstones and grind flour. Take off your veil, Lift up your
- 9:56skirts, bare your legs and wade through the streams.
- 9:59Your nakedness will be exposed and your shame uncovered.
- 10:03I will take vengeance. I will spare no one.
- 10:07Our Redeemer, the Lord Almighty, is His name, is the Holy One of
- 10:12Israel. Sit in silence.
- 10:15Go Into Darkness. Queen City of the Babylonians.
- 10:18No more will you be called Queen of the Kingdom of kingdoms.
- 10:24I was angry with my people and and desecrated my inheritance.
- 10:29I gave them into your hand and you showed them no mercy.
- 10:35Even on the aged you laid a very heavy yoke.
- 10:38You said I am forever the eternal queen, but you did not
- 10:43consider these things or reflect on what might happen now then
- 10:49listen you lover of pleasure, lounging in your security and
- 10:53saying to yourself, I am and there is none besides me.
- 10:56I will never be a widow or suffer the loss of children.
- 11:00So that's exactly what was said in Revelation 18.
- 11:04That's that's written in Isaiah 47, verse 8 and I'll read to you
- 11:10again what she said in Revelation 18 verse 7.
- 11:15Give her as much torment and grief as the luxury, glory and
- 11:19luxury she gave herself in her heart.
- 11:21She boasts, I sit enthroned as queen.
- 11:24I am not a widow. I will never mourn.
- 11:28So this is this. This is, you know, the
- 11:31Revelation 18 is the end times. This is look what is referred to
- 11:35as Mystery Babylon. And there's lots of speculation
- 11:40on who Babylon is, lots of different cities.
- 11:43It's it's described within the Bible.
- 11:47And I guess it's good just to know what the Bible says so that
- 11:52when we actually figure out who Babylon is, then we'll know.
- 11:59But there are several different contenders for Babylon.
- 12:03So OK, let's continue in Isaiah 47, verse 9 where he's talking
- 12:08where this is the Lord talking about to Babylon 47, nine.
- 12:14Both of these will overtake you in a moment on a single day,
- 12:18loss of children and widowhood, They will come upon you in full
- 12:24measure in spite of your many sorceries and all your potent
- 12:29spells. See what I mean about this being
- 12:31like something more supernatural.
- 12:34And, and this is like in the Book of Revelation, it says that
- 12:37Babylon will be destroyed in one hour and people will be shocked
- 12:42when they see it. And they're going to see it from
- 12:45the distant and they're going to see it burning up and they're
- 12:48going to see it from out on the sea.
- 12:50And this was like some place that everybody traded with.
- 12:55Maybe it was like spiritual thing or it maybe was literal.
- 13:00I mean items were described in the Book of Revelation of what
- 13:04the merchandise was that was traded.
- 13:06Going back to Isaiah 47 verse 10, you have trusted in your
- 13:11wickedness and have said no one sees me.
- 13:15Your wisdom and knowledge mislead you when you say to
- 13:18yourself, I am and there is none besides me.
- 13:23To me, you know, this, this Babylon, it kind of I mean it's
- 13:28always talked about in a feminine way, but it seems it
- 13:33seems spiritual and it seems like it's saying something that
- 13:40you know, God says I am. You know, when when Moses or
- 13:47Abraham saw the Angel or I think it was actually Jesus that was
- 13:54in the and then there was this ram caught in a burning Bush or
- 13:57something when he was supposed to sacrifice his son Isaac.
- 14:02He said like, who should I tell him sent me or who is it?
- 14:06And he said I am. I mean that was when you heard I
- 14:08am. And I think also with Moses,
- 14:11that was the phrase that God used when he was going to
- 14:14deliver the people from Egypt. Tell him that I am sent you.
- 14:19So this is the way God defines himself as I am.
- 14:23So I think it's very interesting in Isaiah 4710 that this Babylon
- 14:28entity describes there's herself or his self.
- 14:32Whatever I am, there is none besides me.
- 14:36I mean, it does talk about I will never be a widow or suffer
- 14:38the loss of children, but it's like this androgynous kind of a
- 14:42being that's a spiritual thing. And I've mentioned this before,
- 14:46but some of the ancient gods, little G gods that people
- 14:50worshipped were, you know, you could see this.
- 14:53I mean, there's like Ishtar. I mean, the this could be
- 14:58Ishtar. I don't know, like the ancient
- 15:01look up her because it seems like some of this description
- 15:04could fit her and that's spiritual.
- 15:07And so then so then it but it is a place somewhere in the Book of
- 15:12Revelation also. So I just think it might be
- 15:15spiritual idolatry. And what specific land that gets
- 15:21destroyed because of it? I don't know.
- 15:23But it could be multiple places because everybody always thinks,
- 15:26oh, this is, you know, describing a city.
- 15:29Well, what if it happens to be multiple cities?
- 15:32I mean, there is one, I guess, that the Book of Revelation
- 15:35talks about as one specific city that people see and they're just
- 15:41appalled when they see it destroyed.
- 15:43So anyway, Isaiah 4711, disaster will come upon you and you will
- 15:50know and you will not know how to conjure it away.
- 15:55A calamity will fall upon you that you cannot ward off with a
- 15:59ransom. A catastrophe you cannot foresee
- 16:03will suddenly come upon you. Keep on, then, with your magic
- 16:07spells and with your many sorceries which you have labored
- 16:12at since childhood. Perhaps you will succeed.
- 16:16Perhaps you will cause terror. All the counsel you have
- 16:20received has only worn you. Outlet your astrologers come
- 16:25forward, those stargazers who make predictions month by month.
- 16:30Let them save you from what is coming upon you.
- 16:34Surely they are like stubble. The fire will burn them up.
- 16:38They cannot even save themselves from the power of the flame.
- 16:42These are not coals for warmth. This is not a fire to sit by.
- 16:48That is all they are to you. These you have dealt with and it
- 16:53and labored with since childhood.
- 16:55All of them go on in their error.
- 16:59There is not one that can save you.
- 17:04So that's a pretty harsh word of what's going to happen to
- 17:10Babylon someday. But in this book of Zechariah,
- 17:14he's telling Zion, which is Jerusalem, escape you who live
- 17:18in daughter Babylon. So there are some, apparently
- 17:23some Israelites living in Babylon.
- 17:27For this is what the Lord Almighty, now we're back in the
- 17:30book of Zechariah. For this is what the Lord
- 17:32Almighty says. After the Glorious One has sent
- 17:36me against the nations that have plundered you.
- 17:40For whoever touches you touches the apple of his eye, I will
- 17:44surely raise my hand against them, so that their slaves will
- 17:48plunder them. Then you will know that the Lord
- 17:51Almighty has sent me. So this is an interesting too,
- 17:55and it supports what was said in other scripture that we've read
- 17:59is that you what you sow, you reap.
- 18:04And this is true. Like God will let our free will
- 18:07go. I mean let our free will happen.
- 18:10He will use it, but He will use it for His purpose.
- 18:14See, He's still sovereign. So our free will, we can decide
- 18:19to do something and God can use that ultimately for His purpose,
- 18:25or He can thwart it. He can, you know, 'cause it says
- 18:27somewhere in the Bible, like, you know, that we can make the
- 18:32plans, but it's the Lord who really decides what we do.
- 18:35And so it really God is ultimately there, but he lets us
- 18:39have our free will. And then he works with that, you
- 18:43know, like he can use that to accomplish his own purpose.
- 18:48So verse 10, it says shout and be glad, daughter Zion, for I am
- 18:53coming and I will live among you, declares the Lord.
- 18:57So this is Jesus I, I am coming and I will live among you,
- 19:03declares the Lord. Many nations will be joined with
- 19:07the Lord in that day and will become my people.
- 19:12So even though Israel is the chosen people, there are going
- 19:16to be many other people that come along with Israel that
- 19:22become part of it. And I remembered reading this in
- 19:26another verse, another book, Isaiah, and I thought this was
- 19:33kind of interesting to add in here because it says many
- 19:36nations will be joined with the Lord in that day and will become
- 19:39my people. So I was reflecting on Isaiah
- 19:421925 and you're going to be shocked when you hear the the
- 19:46nations that are with. So it says in Isaiah 1925, the
- 19:51Lord Almighty will bless them, saying blessed be Egypt, my
- 19:57people, Assyria. My handiwork and Israel my
- 20:04inheritance. This is after all of the the
- 20:08wrath is accomplished, but God is into restoration and he has
- 20:14Egypt here and then Assyria. That's I guess like Turkey and
- 20:19Syria area and I think maybe southwest part of Iraq.
- 20:24It's kind of like that ancient land of Assyria is up in that
- 20:28area. And then Israel, my inheritance.
- 20:31So even though Egypt is going to I guess prior to this, Egypt
- 20:37will be desolate for 40 years. We haven't seen that happen yet.
- 20:40And Assyria, I have a a sense of feeling that it seems like the
- 20:47it's a good possibility that someone from the north maybe is
- 20:52the the lawless one. We'll have to see how that turns
- 20:56out. But it's referenced so many
- 20:58different times, the Assyrian. We'll just have to see what
- 21:01happens there. So anyway, the Lord is, you
- 21:05know, the Lord will be coming back here and will be living
- 21:08here. I will live among you, and you
- 21:10will know that the Lord Almighty has sent me to you.
- 21:13The Lord will inherit Judah as His portion in the Holy Land and
- 21:19will again choose Jerusalem, be still before the Lord all
- 21:27mankind, because He has roused himself from His holy dwelling.
- 21:33This is Jesus coming down from heaven, coming from His throne
- 21:38in heaven to come back to earth. And we're going to have a new
- 21:42heavens, a new earth. And it's just once Jesus is
- 21:46here, it is going to be so amazing.
- 21:49I really cannot wait because just to see what he does and to
- 21:53actually see him in person and the restoration that he is going
- 21:57to bring to the earth. And it's just going to be,
- 22:00there's going to be peace finally when Jesus, but before
- 22:04Jesus comes, there's going to be a false peace.
- 22:06And there's going to be a false person who claims to be God who
- 22:11people think brings peace. But that's the evil 1.
- 22:14So first there's the evil one that comes, and then Jesus comes
- 22:18after that. So there's a lot in store at
- 22:22some point in our future. And everybody's wondering with
- 22:25all this stuff happening in the Middle East, are we getting
- 22:27closer to this time frame or how far away is it?
- 22:31Because there's a lot of weird stuff happening these days.
- 22:34Anyway, that's a good reason to stay in the Bible and to read
- 22:39God's Word and know what it says so that when things do happen
- 22:43and we're in a prophetic book, then we will, when we see these
- 22:47things happen, we will know because Jesus himself even gave
- 22:51a description of what would happen in those times.
- 22:54So this is the end of chapter 2 and I hope you come back for
- 22:58chapter 3 next time and we'll talk more about from the book of
- 23:04Zechariah. If you're not subscribed, please
- 23:06do so. And if you found this
- 23:08beneficial, please share it with someone else.
- 23:10Thank you.
