- 0:00Aloha. Wednesday morning in Hawaiʻi. Steady rain on the windward side through Thursday, then a major south swell rolls in by the weekend. I'm Mele with what's happening today.
- 1:48Windward Maui and the Big Island are soaked right now — expect that moisture to spread to other islands tonight. Winds are breezy today but ease up starting tomorrow. If you're flexible with your plans, Thursday through Saturday is your best stretch for outdoor activities — calmer winds, less rain, mostly clear afternoons. Just keep the south-facing beaches off your list this weekend.
- 2:07Surf is small across most of the islands — 3.8 feet at Waikiki, 3.3 at Waimea, comfortable for swimmers. Kauaʻi's Hanalei is at 4.3 feet with some shore break, and the Big Island is nearly glass at 1.2 feet. Today and tomorrow are your safest swimming days before that south swell climbs Sunday and Monday.
- 2:22Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park has several closures this week — the Kahuku Unit roads, Kīpukapuaulu Trail, and Lava Tube Bridge are closed for maintenance and hazard removal. Kīlauea remains on advisory status. Parks elsewhere are operating normally.
- 2:35If you're planning a trip later this year, our new piece on daylight saving in Hawaiʻi walks through something most visitors miss. Hawaiʻi hasn't changed its clocks since 1947, which means sunset times and daylight hours are different from the mainland — and it quietly reshapes what you can actually do on a fall trip. We break down which activities you'll need to move earlier in the day if you're heading in September or October.
- 2:57The forecast shifts Sunday as that swell arrives. Sunday and Monday will bring above-normal surf heights and rough water on the south-facing coasts, with minor coastal flooding possible early next week during high tides.
- 3:08If you're on the windward side today, bring your rain jacket. The leeward beaches are your better bet through Thursday. Catch you tomorrow.
