- 0:01Speaker 1: Wave.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave
- 0:12Speaker 2: original presented by GNC. My name is Beaumont Jones. Thanks
- 0:16Speaker 2: for listening wherever you get your podcast. Thanks for watching
- 0:19Speaker 2: us on YouTube. Subscribe, like, rate us, review us, give
- 0:22Speaker 2: us five stars. You only give us four stars. I'm
- 0:25Speaker 2: inclined to believe you are a hater. It is a
- 0:28Speaker 2: Deontay Thursday. A Thursday. You understand what I'm saying? Deontay
- 0:34Speaker 2: Lee of the Wrangler, what's going on, man?
- 0:36Speaker 1: I'm good, man. Glad to be on. We haven't talked
- 0:38Speaker 1: ball in a little bit, so I'm definitely glad to
- 0:40Speaker 1: be here to do so.
- 0:40Speaker 3: Yeah, man, and we lucky, man.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Deontay out here teaching the world, helping them lead the way,
- 0:47Speaker 2: high school football coaches, so he gave us a little
- 0:49Speaker 2: bit of time.
- 0:50Speaker 3: You know what I'm saying?
- 0:51Speaker 1: Yeah. Look, man, the voice is a little froggier than
- 0:53Speaker 1: usual right now.
- 0:54Speaker 3: Oh, boy, oh, that's right. You having to whip the
- 0:56Speaker 3: boys into shape.
- 0:57Speaker 1: That's right.
- 0:58Speaker 3: You having to remind them who's in charge.
- 1:00Speaker 1: Listen, man, I thought the one kid I had was enough,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and then I went and adopted, basically, another 105 between
- 1:08Speaker 1: our program, and now we got to have conversations about
- 1:10Speaker 1: how we leave the weight room, how we leave certain classrooms.
- 1:13Speaker 1: Not exactly how I expected I'd be spending my adulthood,
- 1:15Speaker 1: but the football part makes it all worth it.
- 1:18Speaker 3: Damn, man, all good.
- 1:19Speaker 2: You are also in Southern California, so I want to
- 1:21Speaker 2: start before we get to an NFL preview of sorts.
- 1:25Speaker 2: But the Lakers just sold, or we got word that
- 1:28Speaker 2: they're selling, for $ 12.
- 1:30Speaker 3: 5 million.
- 1:31Speaker 2: There's a lot going on in there. I just want
- 1:33Speaker 2: to start with the simple fact.
- 1:35Speaker 3: That they just sold the motherfuckers a year.
- 1:37Speaker 2: Ago for $ 10, 000, and now.
- 1:40Speaker 3: He flipped it for $ 2. 5 million. That's a 25% return
- 1:42Speaker 3: on a.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Double digit billion dollar asset.
- 1:49Speaker 2: And as nefarious as this appears to be, as janky
- 1:53Speaker 2: as this appears to be, as trumped up, and I
- 1:56Speaker 2: do mean trump because it's a Kushner involved in this, that.
- 1:58Speaker 3: This all seems to be. Shit, man, you come off
- 2:01Speaker 3: me 25% return in a year. I'll sell you anything
- 2:03Speaker 3: I got.
- 2:04Speaker 1: Listen, man, I'm a Southern California native. Flippin' property is
- 2:08Speaker 1: the name of the game down here. I could walk
- 2:10Speaker 1: down my street right now and see a bunch of
- 2:12Speaker 1: signs outside of houses. People who are doing fixer-uppers and
- 2:15Speaker 1: getting out of there. And I can't even call it
- 2:16Speaker 1: that because Mark Walter wasn't even around long enough to
- 2:19Speaker 1: get his own furniture in the building. You know?
- 2:23Speaker 3: When he gonna have to move to Dodgers though?
- 2:24Speaker 2: Because the thing is, he had a federal investigation and
- 2:27Speaker 2: so they've been quite... Look, Ramona Shelburne got on the
- 2:30Speaker 2: radio and told my man Sedano that This came together
- 2:34Speaker 2: this week. We're talking on Wednesday. Who decides to.
- 2:40Speaker 3: Sell a team for $ 12. 5 billion in a couple of days?
- 2:44Speaker 1: Right. That means you had the all-hands meeting on Monday
- 2:48Speaker 1: to finalize this and then sent the offer through and
- 2:51Speaker 1: we was putting our signatures on it on Tuesday. That
- 2:54Speaker 1: makes no sense to me. I think I was reading
- 2:56Speaker 1: the LA Times reporting on the investigation and I think
- 2:59Speaker 1: that his insurers that he was, you know, financing this
- 3:02Speaker 1: purchase of the Lakers, Mark Walter, that is, said, oh, yeah,
- 3:05Speaker 1: you know, we got like one, maybe one and a
- 3:07Speaker 1: half billion in, you know, related party transactions. And they're like, actually,
- 3:11Speaker 1: let's go look at them books. And it came back
- 3:13Speaker 1: to 21 million, 21 billion. Now, that is going to
- 3:17Speaker 1: grab the attention of federal investigators, right? You might be
- 3:19Speaker 1: able to slide a billion here or there underneath people's
- 3:23Speaker 1: noses and take a little slap on the wrist, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 1: once the FTC or SEC starts knocking on your door.
- 3:28Speaker 1: You start talking about 21 billion with a B and
- 3:31Speaker 1: now everything's got to stop. Everybody's got to look at
- 3:34Speaker 1: your paperwork a little bit harder.
- 3:36Speaker 2: So this raises an interesting question because another L.A. sports
- 3:40Speaker 2: thing that you may remember is when Frank McCourt bought
- 3:43Speaker 2: the Dodgers with no money.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Yes.
- 3:46Speaker 3: One of the amazing hustles of all time. For those
- 3:48Speaker 3: who don't remember.
- 3:49Speaker 2: This, Frank McCourt bought the Dodgers with no money. He
- 3:51Speaker 2: bought it with paper, but he did not actually have
- 3:54Speaker 2: any money. Then he got into a divorce and the
- 3:57Speaker 2: team had to be split and neither party actually had
- 4:00Speaker 2: the money to buy the other out, right? Or in
- 4:03Speaker 2: order to pay, I think it was in order to
- 4:04Speaker 2: pay the settlement, McCourt had to sell the Dodgers. McCourt
- 4:08Speaker 2: bought the Dodgers with no money, sold them, I think
- 4:12Speaker 2: to Mark Walter, for a billion and got to keep
- 4:16Speaker 2: the parking lots. retained ownership of the parking lots. I
- 4:20Speaker 2: bring all that up to say, after some of the
- 4:23Speaker 2: market stuff and crashing and everything else, you had to
- 4:26Speaker 2: have the actual money. in order to get these teams, right?
- 4:29Speaker 2: The ability to buy teams with paper kind of went away.
- 4:33Speaker 2: And it is amazing the level of chicanery that goes
- 4:36Speaker 2: on in high-level money. You would be shocked at how
- 4:38Speaker 2: many people buy money, I mean, buy things without actually
- 4:41Speaker 2: having money. Hey, such and such says he's good for it.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And these things slide. I read this book called Billion
- 4:46Speaker 2: Dollar Whale. You check it out about the Malaysian cat
- 4:49Speaker 2: that ran a super scam. He had a reason that
- 4:51Speaker 2: that boy Praz going to jail. He bankrolled the Wolf
- 4:54Speaker 2: of Wall Street.
- 4:54Speaker 3: It's all this stuff. But the big thing was, They
- 4:57Speaker 3: ain't really have any money. Or you take a little money,
- 5:00Speaker 3: make the money look like some money, dot, dot, dot. Like,
- 5:02Speaker 3: they running so much game on this. And then for
- 5:04Speaker 3: you to.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Say you read that and it turned out they're like, yeah,
- 5:08Speaker 2: you know, it's just a little bit of money that
- 5:10Speaker 2: was janky.
- 5:10Speaker 3: Turned out it's $ 27 billion that's janky. Ain't that something?
- 5:14Speaker 1: You know, it's like you're trying to deposit a check
- 5:17Speaker 1: from somebody who don't really got it. And then they
- 5:19Speaker 1: send you that email or make that call like, hey, uh.
- 5:22Speaker 1: We're going to be spending a little extra time on
- 5:23Speaker 1: your account. So some numbers is about to change pretty
- 5:26Speaker 1: drastically in the next 24 to 48 hours. I think
- 5:29Speaker 1: that that's a lot of what's going on here. And
- 5:32Speaker 1: you bringing up the Dodgers is an interesting thing in that,
- 5:34Speaker 1: I mean, A, because the whole McCourt situation basically built
- 5:37Speaker 1: the Dodgers dynasty that we have now because they were
- 5:39Speaker 1: able to work something out with their TV deal where
- 5:41Speaker 1: they don't have to share that revenue the same way
- 5:43Speaker 1: that the other 2019s in the NLB does. And I
- 5:46Speaker 1: think that, you know, I tweeted when I saw that
- 5:47Speaker 1: this came together in a couple of days, like I
- 5:50Speaker 1: can hear the documentary music rolling now. And I don't
- 5:53Speaker 1: know whose side I'm more interested in. I don't know
- 5:55Speaker 1: how more interested in the Kushner end of this than
- 5:57Speaker 1: how you're able to get, you know, whipped together $ 12. 5
- 6:00Speaker 1: billion to make this purchase. Or Mark Walter, who just
- 6:03Speaker 1: bought this team and was starting to bring in all
- 6:06Speaker 1: his Dodgers people and changing analytics and changing the way
- 6:09Speaker 1: that they're running the business. And now all of a
- 6:11Speaker 1: sudden he's right back out of the building. I don't
- 6:12Speaker 1: know which one I want as part one more than
- 6:15Speaker 1: the other. Yeah.
- 6:16Speaker 3: Now keep in mind for people who don't know, this
- 6:17Speaker 3: is Jared Kushner's brother.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:21Speaker 3: That is part of this with Bob Iger.
- 6:23Speaker 1: With Bob Iger.
- 6:24Speaker 3: Right, with Bob Iger.
- 6:25Speaker 2: But as our man Yaron Weitzman has pointed out, who
- 6:28Speaker 2: wrote the book on this latest leg of the.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Regime, These two guys don't have $ 12 billion.
- 6:36Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 6:37Speaker 2: We don't actually know where this money is going to
- 6:40Speaker 2: come from, but the deal was worked out in a
- 6:43Speaker 2: couple of days. The only circumstance under which that happens is, yo,
- 6:47Speaker 2: I got to move this thing right now.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Right now.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Right now.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And so you talk to one set of people.
- 6:53Speaker 3: You don't open it up.
- 6:54Speaker 2: This is like the Luka Dodgers trade. Like, hey, man,
- 6:56Speaker 2: Anthony Davis is a pretty good thing to give back,
- 6:58Speaker 2: but at the same time, You're not going to open
- 7:01Speaker 2: this up to market, right?
- 7:03Speaker 3: So you call into one person. If you could get
- 7:06Speaker 3: 12 and a half from these people who we don't
- 7:09Speaker 3: know if they have 12 and a half, why wouldn't
- 7:11Speaker 3: you put this out there for more people to get?
- 7:14Speaker 3: Because you, for whatever reason, needed this to move fast.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Right now, right? This is hey, let me go find
- 7:21Speaker 1: somebody I can sell this house or this car to
- 7:23Speaker 1: before they come repossess my shit.
- 7:26Speaker 3: What you got right now, man? What you holding right now, man?
- 7:28Speaker 1: I'll take that.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Mark Walters couldn't even be like, it'll take $ 15 billion.
- 7:31Speaker 1: He couldn't even get to that place.
- 7:32Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 7:39Speaker 1: That watch on your wrist, that look nice.
- 7:44Speaker 3: Let me get a look at that.
- 7:46Speaker 1: When's the last time you got this thing appraised? You
- 7:48Speaker 1: know what? I'll take it myself. I'll take it myself
- 7:51Speaker 1: and I'll find out what that number is.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Ooh, nice and quiet.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 7:54Speaker 3: Okay. I see what's happening. Yeah.
- 7:56Speaker 2: So like, you know what it feels like when it
- 7:58Speaker 2: feels like it's just the beginning of something.
- 8:01Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:01Speaker 3: And this has got to, it can only be just
- 8:04Speaker 3: the beginning. Like I think, I started talking about this
- 8:07Speaker 3: just a second ago, but the something larger is I
- 8:09Speaker 3: think people have lost sight of this, that.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Owners weren't always super rich in sports. They were kind
- 8:17Speaker 2: of rich, right? You had like car dealers who own
- 8:21Speaker 2: teams like Jerry Buss, a physical chemist who had made
- 8:24Speaker 2: some money.
- 8:25Speaker 3: In real estate.
- 8:25Speaker 2: Like, these were the kinds of guys that were buying this. Now,
- 8:28Speaker 2: all hedge fund billionaires. Because the money has gotten so big. Like,
- 8:32Speaker 2: I wish my guy Koppelman was doing billions again. Because
- 8:35Speaker 2: Bobby Axelrod would buy a team.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Like, that's who these people are now.
- 8:40Speaker 1: The context we're in now, the way that Mark Cuban
- 8:42Speaker 1: got to the Mavericks, people will be looking at him like, okay,
- 8:45Speaker 1: so we want to talk about you as a minority owner, right?
- 8:48Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Another guy with a fascinating money story.
- 8:52Speaker 1: 100%.
- 8:52Speaker 3: But you're absolutely right. Him coming in with $ 3 billion.
- 8:56Speaker 2: Nah partner you said you sit in that chair on
- 8:59Speaker 2: that side of the table that was the thing where
- 9:02Speaker 2: hey every time people like it'll be great if a
- 9:03Speaker 2: player can own a team i don't think you understand
- 9:05Speaker 2: how shit works they don't have that kind of money
- 9:06Speaker 2: and how do i know that lebron thought he was
- 9:09Speaker 2: going to be able to parlay his shit and get
- 9:11Speaker 2: to team ownership brother it ain't going like that way
- 9:15Speaker 2: anymore You can be an ambassador.
- 9:17Speaker 1: That's your role now.
- 9:18Speaker 3: You know what you be? Magic.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Yes.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Magic. Magic. Magic.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Magic spin every July on a boat. Just cruising around.
- 9:28Speaker 3: Fuck work. Fuck anything else. Just cruising around on a boat.
- 9:32Speaker 3: And you know what he is? he he he he'd
- 9:35Speaker 3: a philly fanatic.
- 9:36Speaker 1: Yep he'd a smile away man he'd a smile away
- 9:39Speaker 1: man that's what that's what athletes get to be you.
- 9:41Speaker 3: Get everybody feel good with magic pull up exactly.
- 9:46Speaker 1: The handshake brother that that man as you would say no.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Man are you talking about time magic pulled up to
- 9:51Speaker 2: the seaport studio espn i think you i think i
- 9:54Speaker 2: have heard this dude magic pulled up and it was
- 9:56Speaker 2: so funny because i was working with pablo at the
- 9:57Speaker 2: time and pablo didn't get it like he I know
- 10:01Speaker 2: you were in LA, so it lands a little different,
- 10:03Speaker 2: but I had to be fair and recognize Pablo's six
- 10:05Speaker 2: years old when Magic retires, right? Now, to me, the
- 10:08Speaker 2: measure everybody needs to have is we call him Magic
- 10:11Speaker 2: and not because he.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Asked us to. We do that. We decided that this
- 10:16Speaker 3: dude is Magic.
- 10:17Speaker 1: You merit this nickname. Right.
- 10:19Speaker 2: How absurd that is that this is what it is.
- 10:23Speaker 2: So Magic pulled up. And I have been listening to
- 10:26Speaker 2: Pablo run Magic down on the air forever, act like
- 10:29Speaker 2: LeBron was in charge of the team. I used to
- 10:31Speaker 2: be like, yo, man, do you know who Magic is? Like,
- 10:33Speaker 2: you think Magic just let LeBron tell.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Him what to do? Like, this is Magic. It did
- 10:38Speaker 3: not land. Dog, Magic pulled up. I watched Pablo stand
- 10:41Speaker 3: on the sofa to shake Magic's hand. Like, jump over
- 10:43Speaker 3: the sofa from the back to get a spot to
- 10:46Speaker 3: stand on that.
- 10:46Speaker 2: There's a picture out there of him doing that. Because
- 10:49Speaker 2: when Magic pull up, everybody feels good.
- 10:52Speaker 3: And Magic knew everybody's history. Magic knew North Carolina, then
- 10:56Speaker 3: Miami before you got here, right? He's like, yeah, Pablo,
- 10:58Speaker 3: you're Harvard, right? Like, Magic, that's what LeBron would be.
- 11:04Speaker 2: LeBron would have to start treating people a lot different
- 11:06Speaker 2: if he was going to get into an ownership group.
- 11:08Speaker 1: Absolutely. And I mean, I love bringing up that magic
- 11:11Speaker 1: anecdote because that's also a reminder that the Michigan don't
- 11:14Speaker 1: leave him, right? No. He just got money with a
- 11:16Speaker 1: lot of Michigan underneath him, right? And if you read
- 11:20Speaker 1: some of them old stories about how he was handling
- 11:22Speaker 1: the business behind closed doors, we see the smiles. Everybody
- 11:26Speaker 1: else in the building, they ain't getting that version of magic.
- 11:29Speaker 3: No, that's because they're not getting magic. We're getting magic.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yeah. Irving is what's going on behind them doors.
- 11:36Speaker 3: They are getting Irving. Also, now that we're mentioning this,
- 11:39Speaker 3: I never really thought about it. Can you imagine Magic
- 11:44Speaker 3: being Magic except we called him Irvin?
- 11:47Speaker 1: Right.
- 11:47Speaker 3: Irvin doesn't really fit.
- 11:49Speaker 1: Right. I hear Irvin Johnson moving like this. I'm looking
- 11:52Speaker 1: for a fur coat. Okay.
- 11:55Speaker 3: A fur coat or just a shirt with Irvin on
- 11:58Speaker 3: this side.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:59Speaker 3: And the name of his employer on that side.
- 12:03Speaker 1: Over 100%. Irvin. 100%. Irvin is what you call me.
- 12:06Speaker 1: He is Irvin.
- 12:08Speaker 3: Irvin, man.
- 12:09Speaker 1: Irvin.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Anyway, just as that news just dropped, everybody's just like, yo,
- 12:14Speaker 2: something's crazy here. And it leads us to a question
- 12:16Speaker 2: that I will use to take us into football. I
- 12:19Speaker 2: can tell social content when we have it. So go
- 12:22Speaker 2: ahead and cut this with the time, Mike. If you
- 12:26Speaker 2: can get $ 12. 5 billion for the Lakers, what could you
- 12:33Speaker 2: get for the Cowboys?
- 12:35Speaker 1: Listen, man. Listen, man, I know Stephen Jones. I know
- 12:39Speaker 1: Stephen Jones has been sitting on this property waiting for
- 12:42Speaker 1: dad to hand this off before he takes that long
- 12:45Speaker 1: ride out into the sunset. Listen, man, second generation ownership
- 12:49Speaker 1: don't sound as pretty as sitting on maybe 15 or
- 12:52Speaker 1: 20 of them tanks.
- 12:54Speaker 3: So it's interesting, though, because Stephen Jones is not young.
- 12:59Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Right.
- 13:00Speaker 2: I think that's an important detail to bring up because.
- 13:02Speaker 3: Maybe he's with the team. Right.
- 13:04Speaker 2: This don't feel like them Steinbrunner brothers. I call them
- 13:07Speaker 2: the Steinbrunner brothers.
- 13:08Speaker 3: That would be funny. But the Steinbrunner brothers, like they
- 13:11Speaker 3: don't enjoy this.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Right.
- 13:13Speaker 3: Well, there's only one left.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 13:16Speaker 3: He's not into baseball. Like this isn't a thing to him.
- 13:19Speaker 2: I do get the feeling that Steven really digs this.
- 13:22Speaker 3: But again, the Steinbrunner brothers have kept the team. And
- 13:23Speaker 3: I've been shocked. And I have said for a while.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Watch out for insert sovereign wealth fund here, swooping up
- 13:32Speaker 2: and getting either of them. Because if you are, I
- 13:35Speaker 2: resist the idea of sports washing. I don't think it works, right?
- 13:38Speaker 2: I think it's just something to talk about.
- 13:40Speaker 3: But if you get the Lakers or the Yankees, like
- 13:45Speaker 3: you're playing a different game. If the Saudis pull up
- 13:48Speaker 3: on Steven Jones and they're like, yo, we give you 20.
- 13:50Speaker 1: 20 of them. 20. Okay.
- 13:52Speaker 3: Shit, man.
- 13:53Speaker 2: They might have Buster Robbins. do a musical performance before
- 13:57Speaker 2: the first game.
- 13:58Speaker 1: I mean, look, and if we're looking at the profile
- 14:00Speaker 1: of people who have been by a team in the
- 14:03Speaker 1: NFL lately, it sounds like them nose is starting to
- 14:06Speaker 1: dwindle a little bit more.
- 14:08Speaker 3: Yeah, man, because these numbers is just going up.
- 14:11Speaker 2: And my last thing I'll say before we get to
- 14:12Speaker 2: the football, through this round of tangents that has gotten
- 14:15Speaker 2: us to football, you and I talked about this on
- 14:17Speaker 2: text a little while. I said that if the Saudis
- 14:19Speaker 2: bought the team, they might have Buster Rhymes do a
- 14:21Speaker 2: performance before the game. I don't know if some of
- 14:24Speaker 2: you were too young to remember this because this is
- 14:25Speaker 2: now like almost 20 years ago. Now that we think
- 14:28Speaker 2: about it, how crazy is it in the 21st century
- 14:34Speaker 2: that Busta Rhymes not only did a song called, and
- 14:39Speaker 2: I quote, A-Rab Money, it also came with a dance.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Yes, yes, yes.
- 14:51Speaker 1: I mean, and this is post, this is post what,
- 14:54Speaker 1: Punjabi rap from Jay-Z?
- 14:55Speaker 3: Post everything.
- 14:57Speaker 1: You know, like, I think, I think, who was that?
- 15:00Speaker 1: Was that Nas? I don't think it was Nas and
- 15:02Speaker 1: Khalees who had, who ended up trying to use some
- 15:05Speaker 1: South Asian sample that ended up getting yanked.
- 15:08Speaker 3: Well, like, think about this.
- 15:09Speaker 1: Girls, girls, girls.
- 15:11Speaker 2: I don't think Jay-Z did that at the Blueprint show.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Because in this day and age, what tribe you with.
- 15:17Speaker 1: The Overton window has shifted.
- 15:21Speaker 3: It's not allowed. You can't do that. I went to
- 15:25Speaker 3: the Ben Ryan Dirty Show in Houston.
- 15:27Speaker 2: And in a lube with Smoke D talking about, man,
- 15:29Speaker 2: there's two dudes in here kissing.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Nope, that joke is not.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Can't do that one no more.
- 15:32Speaker 3: You can't do that no more.
- 15:33Speaker 1: You don't even get the ironic laughter.
- 15:35Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no. You just get a lot
- 15:37Speaker 3: of people looking very upset. Now, let me make sure.
- 15:40Speaker 3: Let me get the year right. on this song.
- 15:44Speaker 2: 2009, Busta Rhymes did A-Rap Money, which again, had a dance.
- 15:50Speaker 1: We are in the throes of the Patriot Act. Yes.
- 15:55Speaker 2: How could you still get away with that in 2009?
- 16:00Speaker 2: But let me tell you something, that is exactly what
- 16:03Speaker 2: I think the NFL is looking for.
- 16:05Speaker 1: 100%.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Still looking for. Now, to the football. So I had
- 16:12Speaker 3: sent word.
- 16:13Speaker 2: This is something I did a little different because much
- 16:16Speaker 2: to the chagrin of some of my guests saying a
- 16:18Speaker 2: real prep heavy situation over here. It's jazz, man. You know,
- 16:22Speaker 2: the songs, you know, the chords, you can play the music.
- 16:25Speaker 3: We vibe. Right.
- 16:27Speaker 2: But I had looked at the NFL and I think
- 16:30Speaker 2: this is as wide open an NFL season. as there
- 16:33Speaker 2: has ever been, considering a team dominated the Super Bowl
- 16:38Speaker 2: last year. And I don't hear anybody saying that they're,
- 16:41Speaker 2: forget winning the Super Bowl, forget going, even say they're
- 16:45Speaker 2: going to win their division.
- 16:47Speaker 1: Right. Right. And the team that lost the Super Bowl,
- 16:51Speaker 1: that got dominated in the Super Bowl, people talking about
- 16:53Speaker 1: them like they should be throwing a party and hanging
- 16:55Speaker 1: a banner if they go 8-9 this year.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Yo!
- 16:57Speaker 1: People are expecting regression.
- 17:00Speaker 3: And.
- 17:01Speaker 2: Meanwhile, America's number one rooting project, the Buffalo Bills, they
- 17:07Speaker 2: got them a new stadium. Boy, white folks is so
- 17:10Speaker 2: ready for the eventual Josh Allen coordination.
- 17:13Speaker 3: And it's not all the white folks, but it's white folks.
- 17:16Speaker 3: We ain't got a lot.
- 17:16Speaker 1: It's enough of them. Yeah, it's enough of them.
- 17:18Speaker 3: We ain't got a lot.
- 17:19Speaker 1: It's 100% enough of them.
- 17:20Speaker 2: But I had sent across for you a list of
- 17:22Speaker 2: like eight teams that were like contenders or.
- 17:25Speaker 1: contenders.
- 17:26Speaker 3: Then I realized while we sitting here talking, I had
- 17:29Speaker 3: left two off. It's really closer to 10. Like I'm
- 17:32Speaker 3: going to run through the list in total, but I
- 17:34Speaker 3: feel like.
- 17:34Speaker 2: There are 10 teams whose fans really believe, yeah, we
- 17:38Speaker 2: can win this this year. The Rams, the Seahawks, the Eagles,
- 17:45Speaker 2: the Bears, America's team, the Detroit Lions. Quietly, the other
- 17:52Speaker 2: America's team, the Dallas Cowboys. The Packers, the Bears, the 49ers,
- 18:00Speaker 2: if anybody can still play, the Bills, and the Ravens.
- 18:09Speaker 1: And I would say that 40% of the teams on
- 18:12Speaker 1: that list not only have that hope there's some expectation
- 18:15Speaker 1: there better yeah it's some coach might get pulled into
- 18:20Speaker 1: the office if you don't all.
- 18:22Speaker 2: Right so like let's i'm gonna run through this and
- 18:24Speaker 2: go one by one and we'll say yes or no
- 18:26Speaker 2: whether these teams should reasonably have expect right not just
- 18:32Speaker 2: i think if things break right okay the rams.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Expect you should absolutely expect.
- 18:38Speaker 2: In their case, if they don't win, your concern is
- 18:41Speaker 2: not pulling the coach.
- 18:42Speaker 3: Your concern is always the coach just being like, yeah,
- 18:44Speaker 3: I'm good.
- 18:45Speaker 1: I'm going home. Yeah.
- 18:47Speaker 3: My chick bad. My chick good. I'm rich. 100%. The Seahawks.
- 18:53Speaker 1: Yeah. They should absolutely reasonably expect to be back.
- 18:56Speaker 3: They can, but we'll get to their issue in a minute.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say, they got one glaring
- 19:00Speaker 1: issue that everybody knows.
- 19:01Speaker 3: It's huge.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Everybody knows.
- 19:03Speaker 3: It's huge. No, not everybody knows. They lie.
- 19:06Speaker 1: That is true.
- 19:07Speaker 3: That is fair. The Eagles.
- 19:10Speaker 1: I would say, if we're being honest, break right. If
- 19:14Speaker 1: you're asking anybody else who likes the Eagles, it's expect. Yeah.
- 19:18Speaker 2: I mean, the way they're going to treat their quarterback
- 19:20Speaker 2: based on this year.
- 19:22Speaker 1: It's a you better.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I mean, they laid the groundwork for this months ago.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Kick ass ass, kid.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Exactly. Right. Exactly. And the head coach is 100% in
- 19:30Speaker 1: that conversation, too. Correct.
- 19:32Speaker 3: The Bears.
- 19:34Speaker 1: I would say this is a break right situation. I agree.
- 19:37Speaker 3: I agree.
- 19:37Speaker 2: I think last year was a lot of break right,
- 19:40Speaker 2: a lot of close games. And historically, there's some regression
- 19:44Speaker 2: on that. There's also the possibility of the leap.
- 19:46Speaker 3: From the quarterback.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Yes.
- 19:48Speaker 3: It's on the board.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Right? Yes.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Detroit, I think, is a break right.
- 19:52Speaker 1: That's a break right. That was a break right before
- 19:55Speaker 1: Terry and Arnold got into all his league.
- 19:57Speaker 2: But shit, man, he was like down to not even
- 19:59Speaker 2: playing in the dime no more by the time that
- 20:01Speaker 2: he got.
- 20:02Speaker 3: By the way, teams are calling him in.
- 20:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I was going to say, I saw the Seahawks
- 20:05Speaker 1: worked him out.
- 20:06Speaker 3: Somebody thinks he can beat that case.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Listen, his lawyer's talking like this ain't going to stick.
- 20:15Speaker 1: I know that I think the Tampa is trying to
- 20:17Speaker 1: prove a point about, you know, a lot of cities
- 20:20Speaker 1: go through this where that hip hop shit that y'all on,
- 20:24Speaker 1: some of these other metropolitan areas surrounding our city, we
- 20:28Speaker 1: ain't going down like that.
- 20:30Speaker 3: I will say this, though.
- 20:30Speaker 2: His case from where I sit sounds a lot like
- 20:33Speaker 2: they may not be able to bust you.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Yes.
- 20:36Speaker 3: But that's not about whether or not you did it.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 20:40Speaker 3: The did it part looks kind of clear to me.
- 20:43Speaker 2: But the should you go to jail for it is
- 20:45Speaker 2: a little tricky.
- 20:47Speaker 3: The Packers, I think, are kind of close to expect.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I think they're right on that borderline of expect. You
- 20:54Speaker 1: hear the names and you think about the trajectory of
- 20:57Speaker 1: the team for the last three to four years. Anybody
- 21:00Speaker 1: else in this situation would be a you better. I
- 21:03Speaker 1: think for me, I'm probably looking at them more break
- 21:06Speaker 1: right because they do have some problems and some key spots.
- 21:10Speaker 1: But you go out and trade for Michael Parsons and
- 21:11Speaker 1: then go pay him the money that you're paying him.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And you're paying your quarterback the money that you're paying him.
- 21:15Speaker 1: This is kind of a you better. And Matt LaFleur
- 21:18Speaker 1: has been here for a while. So for him, at least,
- 21:20Speaker 1: it's a you better.
- 21:21Speaker 2: And I think their quarterback is absolutely a championship ceiling quarterback. 100%.
- 21:26Speaker 2: The high end of him and the particular things that
- 21:28Speaker 2: he can do. You have a quarterback you can win
- 21:30Speaker 2: a Super Bowl with.
- 21:31Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 21:32Speaker 2: I actually realized I left another team out. So we
- 21:35Speaker 2: take it to 11 from there. The other team in
- 21:37Speaker 2: that division is we've already rattled off the first three.
- 21:40Speaker 2: The Vikings, now that they have an NFL quarterback.
- 21:43Speaker 1: That's going to be an interesting conversation if they're not
- 21:47Speaker 1: in the if they're not in the contending conversation again,
- 21:50Speaker 1: because I don't I don't know if Kevin O'Connell can
- 21:54Speaker 1: bust with can have a bust season with Kyler Murray again.
- 21:58Speaker 1: and people still be like, oh, you're the quarterback whisperer guy.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Doesn't mean it's fair, but I think that he can
- 22:03Speaker 1: very quickly find himself in a similar situation as Kyle
- 22:05Speaker 1: Shanahan is in, and at least Shanahan got you two
- 22:07Speaker 1: trips to the Super Bowl. Yeah.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Buffalo, I think break right.
- 22:13Speaker 1: I think it's a break right season. I am interested
- 22:16Speaker 1: with the ownership and GM there if they're going to
- 22:19Speaker 1: be patient enough with their new head coach to say,
- 22:22Speaker 1: if things don't break right, you're okay.
- 22:24Speaker 2: Well, I feel like Those kinds of hires, we hired
- 22:28Speaker 2: the offensive coordinator because we fired the head coach, like
- 22:32Speaker 2: that type of setup, that.
- 22:34Speaker 3: Has all the markings of one and done.
- 22:37Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 22:38Speaker 3: It's totally on the board, right?
- 22:39Speaker 2: Like not saying Joe Brady's only going to be there
- 22:41Speaker 2: one year, but if they mess around and go like
- 22:43Speaker 2: 11 and seven and lose in the wild.
- 22:46Speaker 3: Card, oh yeah. It only takes a couple of things
- 22:50Speaker 3: for them to be.
- 22:51Speaker 1: Like, yeah, man. Yeah, I dare Joe Brady to make
- 22:54Speaker 1: it look like you took a step back. I dare
- 22:56Speaker 1: Joe Brady to look like you took a step back
- 22:58Speaker 1: from last year to this year. This hire 100% felt like, okay, Josh,
- 23:02Speaker 1: you get your pick this time. You better be right.
- 23:05Speaker 2: Yeah, we clearly identified he's the problem. We promoted the GM,
- 23:10Speaker 2: who seemed more likely to be the issue. I didn't
- 23:12Speaker 2: have a problem with them firing McDermott just because nobody
- 23:15Speaker 2: else has gotten to stay that long. with a great
- 23:17Speaker 2: quarterback and not won any, not gotten to a Super
- 23:20Speaker 2: Bowl ever, right?
- 23:21Speaker 1: Exactly.
- 23:21Speaker 3: Nobody else gets to do that.
- 23:23Speaker 2: The Ravens, I think they are in the expectation zone.
- 23:29Speaker 1: They are in the expectation zone.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Do you think they're a break right?
- 23:33Speaker 1: I think they're a break-right team, but you've got to
- 23:35Speaker 1: be in the expectations zone with a two-time MVP at quarterback.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Who's got to get paid. Three-time first-team All-Pro.
- 23:42Speaker 1: You've got a no-doubt Hall of Famer under center, man.
- 23:47Speaker 1: You've got to deliver. And the guy is approaching 30 now.
- 23:50Speaker 1: We are 100% in the... We can't talk about three-
- 23:53Speaker 1: to four-year windows. I need to know what can happen
- 23:55Speaker 1: in the next eight to ten months type of situation.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Hey, man, what do you think about the people who...
- 24:01Speaker 2: are really approaching this season as though, well, you know,
- 24:05Speaker 2: it is on the board that maybe that they won't
- 24:08Speaker 2: want to keep Lamar Jackson after this year.
- 24:11Speaker 1: That sounds like people who would like to be fired
- 24:14Speaker 1: if they had Eric DeCosta's job. You don't let guys
- 24:18Speaker 1: like that walk out the door. For what? If he
- 24:22Speaker 1: ain't hurt, if he ain't hurt, if this ain't a
- 24:24Speaker 1: Peyton Manning where I don't know if his neck is
- 24:27Speaker 1: ever going to work again, this guy gets to stay
- 24:29Speaker 1: as long as he wants to be around him.
- 24:31Speaker 3: My question is, then what?
- 24:33Speaker 1: Right.
- 24:34Speaker 2: Let's just say you decide, you know what, this Lamar
- 24:36Speaker 2: Jackson thing, I don't really think you can get it
- 24:37Speaker 2: done with him.
- 24:39Speaker 3: Then what? Oh, and my bad. I left off another team.
- 24:45Speaker 3: The Texans. Oof.
- 24:47Speaker 1: Quarterback, it's a you better. You know, it's funny. I
- 24:52Speaker 1: think this is the one situation where everybody is in
- 24:56Speaker 1: a you better zone except for the head coach because
- 24:58Speaker 1: he has bought so much good equity with being able
- 25:00Speaker 1: to turn this thing around instantly. Yes.
- 25:03Speaker 3: It's the head coach and the edge Russia.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Yes. Y'all are good. Everybody else. It's time, man.
- 25:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:11Speaker 2: So like we just rattled off 11 teams that have
- 25:16Speaker 2: like for real super like going into week one, you're like,
- 25:21Speaker 2: Hey man, It would be no shock to see any
- 25:25Speaker 2: of them in the Super Bowl.
- 25:28Speaker 1: None.
- 25:29Speaker 3: Now, coming up next, now we.
- 25:31Speaker 2: Get to like actually talk about these Jokers just a
- 25:34Speaker 2: little bit. Cause I mean, it seems cliche, but what
- 25:37Speaker 2: all these teams have in common to me, fascinating quarterback situations. Look,

- 27:40Speaker 2: with Deontay Lee at Oranga talking football. Now, I got
- 27:43Speaker 2: to remember, I got to write down these other teams
- 27:46Speaker 2: that I realized I had forgotten so that we can
- 27:48Speaker 2: get to them in discussing what's going to happen here.
- 27:50Speaker 3: But yeah, it's 11 teams.
- 27:51Speaker 2: With fascinating quarterback situations. And I think fascinating in the
- 27:55Speaker 2: sense that all of these teams, except for one, I'm like, but.
- 28:00Speaker 3: You ain't getting nobody better than this.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And I think the one is the one that just
- 28:05Speaker 1: held up the Lombardi trophy.
- 28:08Speaker 2: That is exactly it. That is exactly it. The only
- 28:11Speaker 2: one where I'm like, it's Sam Darnold. Because look, I'm
- 28:13Speaker 2: going to get to this part early. I've talked about
- 28:15Speaker 2: this before. I'll tie these two together. No, everybody who's like,
- 28:20Speaker 2: can Kyler Murray be the next Sam Darnold? When the
- 28:22Speaker 2: hell did Sam Darnold get as good as Kyler Murray? Like,
- 28:25Speaker 2: you follow these things more closely than I do. You
- 28:27Speaker 2: tell me if I'm tripping.
- 28:28Speaker 3: I know that people don't like him, but.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I would much rather have Kyler Murray be my quarterback
- 28:34Speaker 2: than Sam Darnold.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I think so, too. I think that this 100% is
- 28:38Speaker 1: a good hang versus bad hang type of situation. I
- 28:43Speaker 1: think that that's really what this comes down to. I
- 28:45Speaker 1: don't think that Sam Darnold gets the money that he
- 28:46Speaker 1: got going to Seattle if he wasn't such a high character.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Everybody likes having him in the building. Seems like he's
- 28:53Speaker 1: turned a corner in his career from an emotional maintenance perspective,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and he ain't talking about seeing ghosts anymore. anymore i
- 28:59Speaker 1: think that that's really the thing more than anything but
- 29:01Speaker 1: if you gave me blind item tests if you're just
- 29:04Speaker 1: asking me even coming off of as low of a
- 29:06Speaker 1: season as kyler had last year where they basically told
- 29:08Speaker 1: him to go home and somebody else will cover your
- 29:11Speaker 1: shift i still think i would take kyler over sam
- 29:14Speaker 1: donald in most situations.
- 29:16Speaker 2: Correct me if i'm wrong because i've seen i did
- 29:19Speaker 2: not see this loudly discussed but i felt more of
- 29:21Speaker 2: the internet film crowd talking about this Seattle was protecting
- 29:27Speaker 2: themselves from Sam Darnold a lot down the stretch last year.
- 29:31Speaker 2: Like it wasn't as bad as it was down the
- 29:33Speaker 2: stretch that year in Minnesota. But this was not a
- 29:37Speaker 2: team winning because of its quarterback, no matter what you saw.
- 29:40Speaker 3: In the Super Bowl.
- 29:41Speaker 1: I mean, the first half of the season was about
- 29:43Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and Jigba, and the second half of the
- 29:45Speaker 1: season was about defense and special teams. I really don't
- 29:48Speaker 1: think there was ever a point in the year where
- 29:50Speaker 1: Sam Darnold could have had a rightful argument for being
- 29:53Speaker 1: the lead story out of Seattle. And I would definitely say,
- 29:56Speaker 1: as they were trying to hold on to the number
- 29:57Speaker 1: one seed in the NFC, Everything else was about, let's
- 30:00Speaker 1: get the ball to Kenneth Walker, let's get it to
- 30:02Speaker 1: Zach Charbonnet, and let's make sure our defense has good
- 30:05Speaker 1: field position and we will win games that way. Because
- 30:08Speaker 1: you started to see the turnovers and sacks go up.
- 30:10Speaker 1: And I think that's just always going to be a
- 30:12Speaker 1: part of his story as a quarterback, which is fascinating.
- 30:15Speaker 1: We really rarely get situations like this with the quarterback
- 30:18Speaker 1: where the problems are still obviously the problems. but he
- 30:21Speaker 1: has somehow become just good enough in spite of those
- 30:24Speaker 1: problems to merit being able to hold down a job.
- 30:27Speaker 3: They'd be rooting for him, man. Like the rooting, you know, well,
- 30:31Speaker 3: the Jets let go of him too early. No, I
- 30:33Speaker 3: was there.
- 30:34Speaker 1: No, they didn't.
- 30:35Speaker 3: I was there.
- 30:36Speaker 1: The Panthers didn't make a mistake either. He had to
- 30:38Speaker 1: go from there too.
- 30:39Speaker 2: No, the 49ers did not make a mistake. They went
- 30:42Speaker 2: with Brock Purdy.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Right.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Right call. We'll do that. The absolute right call, right?
- 30:50Speaker 3: The absolute right call. Now, I want to throw another one.
- 30:52Speaker 2: In that division, though, Matthew Stafford, if you're expecting last
- 30:58Speaker 2: year's Matthew Stafford this year, uh-uh.
- 31:01Speaker 3: That's for a number of reasons. That's highly unlikely. But
- 31:06Speaker 3: there are people who get mad at me when I
- 31:08Speaker 3: do this.
- 31:09Speaker 2: But I have always said the real comp for three-time
- 31:12Speaker 2: pro bowler Matthew Stafford is three-time pro bowler Carlson Palmer. Um,
- 31:16Speaker 2: and Matthew Stafford's MVP season was Carson Palmer's 2015 season,
- 31:20Speaker 2: which you could have argued was an MVP season.
- 31:23Speaker 3: Also, they have the, they both look like a quarterback, right?
- 31:28Speaker 2: Both have all this incredible talent and they will both
- 31:30Speaker 2: give you a timer to a game where you, you
- 31:34Speaker 2: can have the ball if you would like it.
- 31:36Speaker 1: Absolutely.
- 31:37Speaker 3: If you can look alive and catch this pepper that's
- 31:39Speaker 3: coming your way, you could have the chance. And so Stafford,
- 31:43Speaker 3: at age 59, or however fucking old he is, had
- 31:46Speaker 3: the best season of his life, right? Like, we made
- 31:49Speaker 3: him an....
- 31:52Speaker 2: The Stafford is a no-brainer Hall of Famer discussion infuriates
- 31:55Speaker 2: me because it is unsupported by fact or the fact
- 31:57Speaker 2: that we were there.
- 31:59Speaker 3: We never said this, right? That Super Bowl they won
- 32:02Speaker 3: was five years ago.
- 32:05Speaker 1: The first half of your career still counts. And it's
- 32:09Speaker 1: more than a half.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:11Speaker 1: That stint in Detroit, it still counts. Yes, he had
- 32:14Speaker 1: the one nice year with Jim Bob Cooter or whatever,
- 32:17Speaker 1: or with Darryl Bevel. Yeah, he had the one nice
- 32:20Speaker 1: year with Jim Caldwell. That existed. We also saw the
- 32:24Speaker 1: rest of his time in Detroit. It's not like he
- 32:27Speaker 1: was a bad quarterback, but he certainly wasn't no damn
- 32:29Speaker 1: Hall of Famer until 2021. That wasn't even a conversation
- 32:33Speaker 1: worth having.
- 32:34Speaker 2: And I think- We would have said that Matt Ryan
- 32:36Speaker 2: was better than him throughout that entire stretch.
- 32:38Speaker 1: And that would have been very much founded by- The
- 32:41Speaker 1: evidence on the field that would have 100 percent been
- 32:43Speaker 1: founded by the evidence on the field. And I would
- 32:46Speaker 1: say I think the thing that pisses me off is
- 32:48Speaker 1: less that he's a no doubt Hall of Famer as
- 32:50Speaker 1: much as, you know, when people talk about being a
- 32:53Speaker 1: temporarily temporarily embarrassed millionaire. for people on the right of
- 32:57Speaker 1: the political spectrum, right? People talk about Matthew Stafford like
- 33:01Speaker 1: a temporarily embarrassed quarterback having to deal with Detroit and
- 33:05Speaker 1: not being just as much a part of some of
- 33:07Speaker 1: Detroit's losing as everybody else who was wearing them colors.
- 33:10Speaker 2: Hey, man, I watched what Josh Allen has helped do
- 33:14Speaker 2: in Buffalo. Hell, I watched what Matt Ryan did out
- 33:17Speaker 2: of the rubble and.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Ashes in Atlanta, right? Say what you want about Stafford.
- 33:23Speaker 3: He never elevated them, right?
- 33:25Speaker 2: That being said, the man can do things.
- 33:31Speaker 3: He's the closest to Mahomes in terms of the tricks.
- 33:35Speaker 2: That he can do right um it it's not a
- 33:38Speaker 2: case where i don't see what people are talking about
- 33:41Speaker 2: right that may be the best he can do amazing
- 33:44Speaker 2: incredible things and he has a great coach he has
- 33:47Speaker 2: i would term now a great receiver and a very
- 33:50Speaker 2: good future hall of fame receiver on the other side
- 33:53Speaker 2: a lot of it is there and then on the
- 33:54Speaker 2: other side they went and got miles garrett and i
- 33:59Speaker 2: mean i think aaron donald's gonna play this year do
- 34:01Speaker 2: you think aaron donald's gonna play this year After.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Going to Rams training camp and talking to some people
- 34:06Speaker 1: around Rams training camp, I think that this is very
- 34:09Speaker 1: much a, we're just waiting for him to say he's
- 34:12Speaker 1: showing up on Monday. I think everybody expects for him
- 34:15Speaker 1: to be there. Every weekend, I think they lay their
- 34:17Speaker 1: heads down at night and just like, I'm just looking
- 34:18Speaker 1: for the text message. That's all I'm waiting on. We
- 34:21Speaker 1: already got the locker set up. We got all his stuff,
- 34:24Speaker 1: just how he likes it. We're just waiting for him
- 34:26Speaker 1: to walk through the door.
- 34:26Speaker 2: And that's why people think that the Seahawks are not
- 34:29Speaker 2: going to go to the Super Bowl or even win
- 34:31Speaker 2: their own division, right? That's the reason that people think that.
- 34:36Speaker 2: And as crazy as this sounds, it just kind of
- 34:39Speaker 2: depends on Stafford.
- 34:41Speaker 1: I would say that you pointed out something that's been
- 34:43Speaker 1: fascinating to me all offseason. They have built an offense
- 34:46Speaker 1: now where Matthew Stafford doesn't actually have to be Matthew Stafford.
- 34:49Speaker 1: You know who Matthew Stafford gets to be? Jared Goff.
- 34:53Speaker 1: That's who Matthew Stafford gets to be in this offense,
- 34:55Speaker 1: just with the trick shots and a much stronger arm, right?
- 34:58Speaker 1: Like that's really, if you go back and watch this
- 35:00Speaker 1: past season, and I was talking with a mutual colleague
- 35:04Speaker 1: of ours, Amina Kimes, about the MVP race, and when
- 35:07Speaker 1: she was going really hard for Drake May and talking
- 35:10Speaker 1: about how Matthew Stafford is really more so protected in
- 35:12Speaker 1: this scheme now, this iteration of the scheme, than he
- 35:15Speaker 1: was in 2021 when they won a Super Bowl, and
- 35:18Speaker 1: you go back and watch, and it's absolutely right. It's
- 35:20Speaker 1: all run game on early downs, play action, we're throwing
- 35:24Speaker 1: the ball to wide open receivers, getting zone coverage, right?
- 35:28Speaker 1: It's not you having to be a superhero outside of
- 35:31Speaker 1: these third and obvious situations. And he can call upon
- 35:35Speaker 1: that from time to time, but he doesn't actually have
- 35:38Speaker 1: to be that on a snap-to-snap basis. And they're 100%
- 35:41Speaker 1: Super Bowl favorites now because on the other side of
- 35:43Speaker 1: the ball, you might bring back Aaron Donald in a
- 35:45Speaker 1: situation where he's actually not the best defensive player on
- 35:49Speaker 1: your roster. Yeah, you should be winning the Super Bowl
- 35:52Speaker 1: if that's your roster seven.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Quarterback, the arc of quarterbacks is not an arc. It's
- 35:57Speaker 2: a it's a, it's a EKG, right? Like it does things.
- 36:01Speaker 2: I think we just saw.
- 36:03Speaker 1: You got no idea which way to say.
- 36:04Speaker 3: Stafford through a bunch of picks in practice the other day.
- 36:07Speaker 3: Hell the year he won the MVP. We didn't even
- 36:10Speaker 3: know he was going to play. Cause we thought he
- 36:11Speaker 3: had a, he had a back. He out of me. We,
- 36:14Speaker 3: we ain't know what was going on, but it's all
- 36:17Speaker 3: there laying out for them. They're going to be a.
- 36:19Speaker 2: Really, really interesting team, but there's also a world where
- 36:23Speaker 2: they could finish like third in the division without playing badly.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I mean, going 10-7 and 11-6 is 100% on the table.
- 36:32Speaker 1: All it takes is Matthew Stafford getting out of bed wrong,
- 36:34Speaker 1: picking up his kids and tweaking something, right? Pulling a
- 36:38Speaker 1: Larry Bird, you know? Being out there in your driveway
- 36:41Speaker 1: doing something you got no business doing and hurting your back.
- 36:44Speaker 1: They've got a left tackle who seems to not be
- 36:47Speaker 1: able to know how to behave each offseason, who's under
- 36:49Speaker 1: investigation and might be suspended by the league for some
- 36:52Speaker 1: domestic dispute issues that he has had. You've got Pukunukua,
- 36:56Speaker 1: who has definitely shown up until this point that he
- 36:58Speaker 1: ain't know how to act in all season. Okay. And
- 37:02Speaker 1: you're bringing back, I mean, for as much as I
- 37:04Speaker 1: love Aaron Donald, I mean, he is 35. You don't
- 37:07Speaker 1: know exactly what's walking through the door. I just know
- 37:09Speaker 1: what I believe about him. There is 100% a case
- 37:12Speaker 1: where instead of being a top three offense, they're ninth
- 37:16Speaker 1: or 10th. And instead of having the number one defense,
- 37:19Speaker 1: they're fifth or sixth. And you got to play San
- 37:21Speaker 1: Francisco twice. You got to play Seattle twice, right? And
- 37:24Speaker 1: you could very much, look up one day and see
- 37:26Speaker 1: this team being second or third in the NFC West
- 37:28Speaker 1: and still feeling like, eh, I can go make a
- 37:31Speaker 1: run to the Super Bowl. It is going to be
- 37:33Speaker 1: a lot, I think, of cognitive dissonance with this team.
- 37:36Speaker 2: But it's also going to be about what the smart
- 37:38Speaker 2: defensive coaches in the league cook up to stop what
- 37:41Speaker 2: has happened. So McVay is interesting to me because I
- 37:44Speaker 2: think McVay is an obviously excellent coach, right? But in
- 37:48Speaker 2: some ways, he reminds me of Steve Kerr is an
- 37:54Speaker 2: example of this. Chip Kelly is an example of this.
- 37:59Speaker 2: You were the future, right? Like you had this futuristic offense.
- 38:03Speaker 2: And when it hit Mike Marks, another guy like this,
- 38:06Speaker 2: when you hit the streets, nobody could do anything with
- 38:10Speaker 2: you because we were just blown away by whatever it was.
- 38:13Speaker 2: And then in part because the process involves other teams
- 38:17Speaker 2: using your stuff, which means that these other defensive coordinators
- 38:19Speaker 2: see this in practice more.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Everybody has greater familiarity with it. people then catch up.
- 38:23Speaker 2: Like there are certain, people a certain age who don't
- 38:26Speaker 2: understand why when Chip Kelly gets a job, it's a
- 38:28Speaker 2: thing because you had to be there, right? Chip Kelly
- 38:32Speaker 2: was doing things. Rich Rodriguez was another guy in college
- 38:34Speaker 2: that was like that. But those guys normally don't like
- 38:37Speaker 2: become the future again. And McVeigh never really became the
- 38:40Speaker 2: future again. And now we're hearing stuff about how he
- 38:43Speaker 2: wants to get back to like living how he used
- 38:45Speaker 2: to live, right?
- 38:46Speaker 3: Like get back to the stuff that he wanted to do.
- 38:49Speaker 2: And so I do wonder after Stafford was so good
- 38:52Speaker 2: last year, what's the league going to have?
- 38:55Speaker 3: Coming back against him.
- 38:57Speaker 1: I mean, it's interesting. You bring up all those names
- 39:00Speaker 1: you bring up from decades prior. The one thing that
- 39:02Speaker 1: exists now that didn't exist then is just the craving
- 39:05Speaker 1: need by the rest of the league to have a
- 39:08Speaker 1: piece of what you've done, right? Like I would say
- 39:11Speaker 1: the NFL now, when it comes to coach hiring, they've
- 39:12Speaker 1: almost adopted this venture capitalist tech type of approach where, oh,
- 39:18Speaker 1: if you were at Google just long enough, to be
- 39:20Speaker 1: able to see how the backend works. We'll come hire
- 39:22Speaker 1: you to come design ours, right? Like they have 100%
- 39:25Speaker 1: kind of adopted that where guys like Sean Mannion, David Blau,
- 39:30Speaker 1: you know, these backup quarterbacks who have no play calling
- 39:32Speaker 1: experience now are getting offensive coordinator roles. That is a
- 39:36Speaker 1: much different thing today than it was before where you
- 39:39Speaker 1: had to have a little bit more of a proven
- 39:40Speaker 1: track record. And I do think that McVay has had
- 39:43Speaker 1: a very interesting track in terms of he was 100%
- 39:47Speaker 1: like three, four years ahead of the curve. in 2017, 2018,
- 39:50Speaker 1: and 2019, and then the league caught up. And then
- 39:53Speaker 1: he pivoted, just as you said, over the last few
- 39:55Speaker 1: years to, I want to give back to putting multiple
- 39:58Speaker 1: tight ends on the field. Some of the stuff that
- 40:00Speaker 1: we were doing when I was coming up underneath the Grudens, right?
- 40:03Speaker 1: Some of that, you know, kind of more strict West Coast,
- 40:06Speaker 1: you know, drop back passing game and downhill run game stuff.
- 40:09Speaker 1: And now I think we're starting to see the NFL say, okay,
- 40:12Speaker 1: we can do that too. And now I want guys
- 40:15Speaker 1: like Nicky Manwari to basically be an extra linebacker for us.
- 40:18Speaker 1: We're starting to find bodies that you can't really manipulate
- 40:21Speaker 1: in the same way. You can't manipulate personnel as much
- 40:26Speaker 1: as you were able to do earlier in his career.
- 40:29Speaker 1: And I think that the biggest question to me is
- 40:31Speaker 1: whether or not, if they have caught up to what
- 40:34Speaker 1: the current paradigm is in terms of getting bigger bodies
- 40:37Speaker 1: on the field to pass the ball and smaller bodies
- 40:38Speaker 1: on the field to run the ball, what the next
- 40:41Speaker 1: iteration of this is, if there is a next iteration.
- 40:44Speaker 1: Because I think Sean McVay would tell you, I mean,
- 40:46Speaker 1: we just kind of lucked into that three tight end
- 40:49Speaker 1: stuff because Devontae Adams and Puka Nakua got banged up
- 40:52Speaker 1: throughout the season. And we just need to be able
- 40:54Speaker 1: to field an offense on a week-to-week basis. I don't
- 40:56Speaker 1: know if they're going to have another card at play.
- 41:00Speaker 1: And I'm just fascinated to see if that matters because
- 41:02Speaker 1: maybe they do just have the best play caller in
- 41:05Speaker 1: the league and a quarterback who can still play at
- 41:07Speaker 1: an all-pro to MVP level if the guy is healthy. Yeah.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Now eels and bears. I don't feel like there's anything
- 41:13Speaker 3: that we can say about these quarterbacks.
- 41:14Speaker 2: That isn't obvious that we haven't talked about a million times,
- 41:16Speaker 2: but it's a quarterback thing on both of those, the lions.
- 41:20Speaker 2: You just brought it up. The Jerry golf thing is interesting, man.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Cause like, again, the demerit against Matthew Stafford, the lion
- 41:25Speaker 2: seemed just fine switching you out for Jared golf. I mean,
- 41:29Speaker 2: it took a couple of years, but nonetheless.
- 41:31Speaker 3: He's just fine.
- 41:33Speaker 1: Just fine.
- 41:34Speaker 2: He's just fine. I, as a, you know, fan of
- 41:38Speaker 2: the Detroit lions, uh, I don't complain about the quarterback.
- 41:42Speaker 2: I know how hard it is to go find one
- 41:43Speaker 2: that's better than him. But I ain't happy about the
- 41:45Speaker 2: quarterback either.
- 41:47Speaker 1: Well, and I think that for a quarterback like Jared Goff,
- 41:50Speaker 1: when we start talking about age cliffs and production cliffs,
- 41:53Speaker 1: a player like him, I think, is much more susceptible
- 41:56Speaker 1: to finding that sharp age cliff and production cliff than
- 41:59Speaker 1: somebody who is more on the MVP spectrum, the way
- 42:02Speaker 1: that people maybe have been talking about someone like Lamar
- 42:04Speaker 1: Jackson after the rough season that he had last year.
- 42:07Speaker 1: A player like Goff could 100% show up one day,
- 42:09Speaker 1: just like Geno Smith did last year and in the
- 42:11Speaker 1: second half of 2024, where all of a sudden all
- 42:15Speaker 1: these passes that were completions over the middle of the field,
- 42:17Speaker 1: gaining 15 to 20 yards, have now turned into interceptions.
- 42:20Speaker 1: They're now turning into batted passes. You're taking more sacks
- 42:23Speaker 1: than usual. He 100% could be susceptible to that. And
- 42:26Speaker 1: I think that the other thing, while this isn't necessarily
- 42:28Speaker 1: a demerit against Dan Campbell, since Ben's left, you take
- 42:33Speaker 1: Ben out of the picture, it's just a lot of
- 42:35Speaker 1: fire at OCs over there. if you look at what
- 42:38Speaker 1: the offenses look like outside of Ben Johnson. So now
- 42:40Speaker 1: I'm fascinated to see whether or not Dan Campbell can
- 42:43Speaker 1: get another grasp on this offense the way that he
- 42:44Speaker 1: had when he had his– What'd you call him? Big
- 42:47Speaker 1: Brain Ben.
- 42:48Speaker 3: Yeah, Big Brain.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Hey, look, I just stopped calling him Big Brain Ben
- 42:51Speaker 2: because after watching Dan without Ben, I was like, oh,
- 42:53Speaker 2: that was Dan's idea.
- 42:54Speaker 1: Mm-hmm. He likes that stuff just.
- 42:56Speaker 3: As much as Ben did. That was him doing that stuff. Because,
- 42:58Speaker 3: I mean, look, he only fired one.
- 43:01Speaker 2: Okay, no, he fired Anthony Lynn, and then he got
- 43:03Speaker 2: Ben Johnson, and then he fired, what was his name?
- 43:06Speaker 3: John Morton. Not to be confused with Johnny Morton.
- 43:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 43:09Speaker 3: But he fired John Morton. Yeah, we're going to see.
- 43:12Speaker 3: Who did they hire this year?
- 43:13Speaker 1: This is Drew Petzig, who was with the Cardinals before.
- 43:17Speaker 2: Yep, that sounds like an NFL offensive coordinator. That kind
- 43:22Speaker 2: of name right there.
- 43:23Speaker 1: If you Google him, he looks like one too.
- 43:25Speaker 3: I bet, I bet. Let me tell you something.
- 43:27Speaker 2: Drew Petzig, I don't even need to see your pic. Like,
- 43:29Speaker 2: when you walk in for the first day.
- 43:33Speaker 3: Are you Drew? Okay, there we go. Where are you
- 43:37Speaker 3: on Dak?
- 43:40Speaker 1: I think, I think I have been I think I've
- 43:44Speaker 1: been cooler on him than most of the people who
- 43:46Speaker 1: were in the NFL tape grinder intelligentsia. I think now
- 43:52Speaker 1: I'm kind of starting to swing the other way where
- 43:54Speaker 1: I feel like he gets dismissed far too often in
- 43:58Speaker 1: these quarterback conversations and what I'm comfortable with. I don't
- 44:01Speaker 1: think that he's an MVP quarterback. I think that the
- 44:04Speaker 1: playoff and the playoff resume, very similar to Justin Herbert
- 44:06Speaker 1: now has been so rough against the actual contenders to
- 44:10Speaker 1: make the argument that he can win you a big
- 44:11Speaker 1: playoff game. But I watch him sometimes and I'm like,
- 44:14Speaker 1: why wouldn't he be able to? I don't understand why when.
- 44:17Speaker 3: I watch how he plays.
- 44:18Speaker 2: Could I not say something similar about Josh Allen?
- 44:22Speaker 1: 100%. 100%. I watch him and I'm like, this looks
- 44:26Speaker 1: like every Super Bowl winning quarterback I've seen in my lifetime.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Why is this not happening? Why would we play the 49ers?
- 44:32Speaker 1: Are we falling apart?
- 44:33Speaker 3: He is like, to me, and I'm curious what you
- 44:36Speaker 3: think about this.
- 44:37Speaker 2: I always say we throw the word franchise quarterback around willy-nilly.
- 44:43Speaker 2: there are starting quarterbacks. And then there's another level to that,
- 44:47Speaker 2: which is a franchise quarterback. Baker Mayfield, I think, is
- 44:49Speaker 2: a great example of a starting quarterback who is not
- 44:52Speaker 2: a franchise quarterback. On the low echelon of that is
- 44:55Speaker 2: like Sam Darnold, who is there. I think Jalen Hurts
- 44:58Speaker 2: is a mid-tier starting quarterback, but we have to talk
- 45:02Speaker 2: about him like a franchise quarterback because of the results
- 45:04Speaker 2: that he's had. I think Dak Prescott is at the
- 45:08Speaker 2: tippy top of starting quarterback short of franchise quarterback like
- 45:13Speaker 2: if you were to ask me who in the league
- 45:15Speaker 2: right now counts as a franchise quarterback I'm gonna pull
- 45:18Speaker 2: the list up in front of me so I can
- 45:20Speaker 2: have them I would say Josh Allen is a franchise
- 45:22Speaker 2: quarterback I would say Lamar Jackson is a franchise quarterback
- 45:27Speaker 2: I would say Joe Burrow um I think you get
- 45:30Speaker 2: guys like Jordan Love where we're still waiting to figure
- 45:32Speaker 2: that out Right.
- 45:33Speaker 3: Like they just still answer.
- 45:34Speaker 1: This is a profile of a franchise quarterback. We just
- 45:36Speaker 1: haven't seen him get over that.
- 45:38Speaker 3: We just haven't seen him. Exactly.
- 45:41Speaker 2: Stafford, I think, has made himself into franchise quarterback space.
- 45:45Speaker 2: You know, I think that's a fair one to say. Obviously,
- 45:48Speaker 2: the greatest quarterback I've ever seen.
- 45:50Speaker 1: Right.
- 45:50Speaker 3: Is on that.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Damn it.
- 45:51Speaker 2: I forgot to put the Broncos on our list. And
- 45:54Speaker 2: you know why I forgot to put the Broncos on
- 45:55Speaker 2: our list? the part of the show that we're in now.
- 45:58Speaker 2: I'm not buying it. You're not this Bo Nix thing.
- 46:02Speaker 2: I'm not buying it. Oh, and Justin Herbert.
- 46:05Speaker 3: He's in there too. I forgot. Another two teams that
- 46:09Speaker 3: we could put on this list.
- 46:10Speaker 1: Absolutely. And I think with Nix, it's 100% founded in
- 46:14Speaker 1: saying I'm not buying this because if they believe after
- 46:16Speaker 1: the last two seasons they had, they wouldn't have traded
- 46:19Speaker 1: away their first round pick to go get Jalen Waddle.
- 46:21Speaker 1: They would have said our quarterback is enough to get
- 46:23Speaker 1: us over this hump. All right. The fact that they
- 46:25Speaker 1: went out and thought they had to go get a
- 46:27Speaker 1: pro or all pro level receiver tells you that we
- 46:30Speaker 1: need to stack this deck as much as possible. So
- 46:33Speaker 1: all Bo Nix has to do is wake up and
- 46:35Speaker 1: walk in a straight line to get us there.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Hey, Nix reminds me of the Nix in the sense
- 46:40Speaker 2: that if a couple of things had gone different, remembering
- 46:43Speaker 2: the way that we were talking about him with one
- 46:45Speaker 2: month left in the regular season, we're having entirely different
- 46:49Speaker 2: conversations right now.
- 46:50Speaker 3: Right.
- 46:51Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:51Speaker 3: Like, like, the Knicks in basketball, they just started playing
- 46:57Speaker 3: really well. Right. But it was like, yo, the vibes
- 46:59Speaker 3: aren't great around this team, all of this.
- 47:01Speaker 2: And they went on the run and it's like, okay,
- 47:03Speaker 2: Denver gets to the conference championship in a game that
- 47:06Speaker 2: quite honestly, even, nobody won, somebody just lost. It was
- 47:10Speaker 2: a weird game to watch. But no, I'm still not
- 47:14Speaker 2: seeing it. And I think that, and I wonder if
- 47:16Speaker 2: it's the, what I thought about him coming out. I don't,
- 47:18Speaker 2: I think people get a bad rap for this. No,
- 47:20Speaker 2: I don't let go of my priors on this until
- 47:25Speaker 2: later because there's something in my priors that is the
- 47:28Speaker 2: reason that I feel like this is the thing. So
- 47:31Speaker 2: if you had your priors about CJ Stroud, for example,
- 47:34Speaker 2: and then you saw him look really good as a rookie,
- 47:36Speaker 2: Chances are the things that we're seeing now that are
- 47:38Speaker 2: problems were tied in to your primes, right? Josh Allen
- 47:42Speaker 2: had to show me that this wasn't just a fluke
- 47:44Speaker 2: because it's still crazy that he improved in the way
- 47:48Speaker 2: that he improved. That's just the nature of it. Bo Nix,
- 47:52Speaker 2: I think that there's a ceiling on how good he
- 47:54Speaker 2: can be. I've seen nothing to tell me that that
- 47:57Speaker 2: ceiling is not there.
- 47:59Speaker 1: I mean, we had, what, over a half decade's worth
- 48:02Speaker 1: of data coming into the league. I don't just dismiss
- 48:06Speaker 1: that with two different programs. Two great programs, I should say.
- 48:10Speaker 1: He had two great offensive play callers in his time
- 48:13Speaker 1: in college, and he looked bad.
- 48:14Speaker 3: Jalen Hurts, same thing.
- 48:16Speaker 1: Same thing.
- 48:17Speaker 2: And all the things that were issues are still issues.
- 48:21Speaker 1: And I think that, you know, he is such, I
- 48:23Speaker 1: find it, he is like the perfect quarterback to get
- 48:25Speaker 1: people riled up. Because there are so many quarterbacks that
- 48:29Speaker 1: he is just objectively better than. And then there is
- 48:32Speaker 1: a hard line of quarterbacks where he clearly cannot do
- 48:35Speaker 1: what they do. And he just wins. The conversation just
- 48:39Speaker 1: ends up being circular all the way across the board
- 48:41Speaker 1: because everybody is right.
- 48:43Speaker 2: But you know who's interesting on the Pryor's discussion to
- 48:46Speaker 2: me is Dak. And the reason I say that is
- 48:49Speaker 2: looking back on it, and I know he had the DUI.
- 48:52Speaker 3: It is crazy that he was a fourth round pick.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Yes.
- 48:54Speaker 2: He was a first team all conference player in Mississippi State.
- 48:57Speaker 2: He got Mississippi State to the Orange Bowl. I know
- 49:00Speaker 2: it because I saw those people on Collins in Miami
- 49:03Speaker 2: the week of, and I was like, no way.
- 49:05Speaker 3: You guys are in the Orange Bowl?
- 49:07Speaker 1: I would argue he is one of the best examples
- 49:10Speaker 1: of a good player legitimately being held down because of
- 49:13Speaker 1: the sticker on the side of his helmet. Because if
- 49:15Speaker 1: you watched him at Mississippi State, that would have looked
- 49:18Speaker 1: like a quarterback that you take a chance on at
- 49:21Speaker 1: least in the top 100 you don't write to day
- 49:24Speaker 1: three right you might not be a first round pick
- 49:26Speaker 1: but a team would have certainly taken them with the
- 49:28Speaker 1: second or third had he not been just not like
- 49:30Speaker 1: one of the sec powers if that guy's at auburn
- 49:33Speaker 1: if he's at tennessee somebody else is going to say
- 49:35Speaker 1: all right the the sticker on the side of his
- 49:37Speaker 1: head says that he is going to be a first
- 49:38Speaker 1: round picker.
- 49:39Speaker 3: No I make two points.
- 49:41Speaker 2: One, I've never heard anybody say it out loud, but
- 49:44Speaker 2: the only conclusion that I can truly draw is that.
- 49:47Speaker 3: I know where you're going.
- 49:48Speaker 1: I know where you're going.
- 49:49Speaker 2: So for those of you who don't know, one year,
- 49:52Speaker 2: Dak got his ass whooped by some white boys at
- 49:55Speaker 2: Paddlebot City Beach, Florida.
- 49:56Speaker 1: You got to be careful what you do at spring break, dog.
- 50:00Speaker 2: I think he was fighting barefoot, and he had a
- 50:02Speaker 2: proper stance, and he got tuned up, man.
- 50:06Speaker 3: And I really do think that in front offices, there
- 50:08Speaker 3: was a question.
- 50:09Speaker 2: As to whether or not you can have a quarterback
- 50:11Speaker 2: that got tuned up like that.
- 50:14Speaker 3: It was any, look it up.
- 50:15Speaker 1: I mean, it was ass, it was a ass whooping, okay?
- 50:19Speaker 3: Then he caught, like, then he catch one of those
- 50:21Speaker 3: where he.
- 50:21Speaker 1: Had to like. Yeah, he had to little stumble real quick.
- 50:26Speaker 3: He got tuned up. And there's that part, number one.
- 50:29Speaker 3: But number two, to the discussion about Pryor's, when he
- 50:32Speaker 3: hits that ceiling at the playoffs, I'm like, well, you know,
- 50:35Speaker 3: he was a fourth-round pick. Yeah. Is that what's happened?
- 50:40Speaker 2: Has he just so greatly overachieved and then the playoffs
- 50:42Speaker 2: come and it's like, he's a fourth round pick. Brock Purdy,
- 50:45Speaker 2: look like a seventh round pick when it don't really
- 50:47Speaker 2: be going right.
- 50:48Speaker 1: That's the damn truth. That's the damn truth. And you know,
- 50:52Speaker 1: and they're all just good enough to pay, right? Like
- 50:54Speaker 1: when I saw the Dak Prescott was getting 60 million annually,
- 50:57Speaker 1: I'm like, I mean, I look at him in the
- 51:00Speaker 1: greater scheme of the rest of the league. And yeah,
- 51:02Speaker 1: if your contract comes up at the right time and
- 51:04Speaker 1: the team's got to pay you 60 million because that's
- 51:06Speaker 1: market rate Dak Prescott gets $ 60 million. Because what the
- 51:09Speaker 1: hell else are you about to do? Same with Brock Purdy.
- 51:11Speaker 1: $ 53 million. Would I want to pay that? No. But
- 51:14Speaker 1: if that's the going rate for a good starting quarterback
- 51:16Speaker 1: fresh off a Super Bowl run, then yeah, I guess
- 51:19Speaker 1: $ 53 million is just what it's going to cost to
- 51:21Speaker 1: bring these guys in. But they do definitely hit these
- 51:24Speaker 1: hard ceilings. And then I think that with them, it
- 51:26Speaker 1: gets even more confounding because then we have these other
- 51:27Speaker 1: guys who don't have the kind of reputation that they
- 51:31Speaker 1: have yet that haven't gotten over the hump. You talk
- 51:33Speaker 1: about Jordan Love, who you mentioned, who has an MVP ceiling.
- 51:36Speaker 1: but hasn't gotten over that hump yet. I would say
- 51:39Speaker 1: Justin Herbert, to a lesser extent, I think that his
- 51:41Speaker 1: career has just been so stunted by either his poor
- 51:44Speaker 1: play in big moments and coaching in big moments that
- 51:48Speaker 1: we just really haven't gotten a fair evaluation. And because
- 51:51Speaker 1: of that, people just dismiss him very similarly to some
- 51:54Speaker 1: of the other quarterbacks that we're talking about in this hierarchy.
- 51:57Speaker 1: And I think that the other guy that I'm just
- 51:59Speaker 1: so fascinated with in this continuum, and I think that
- 52:01Speaker 1: maybe the MVP has just taken him to a different
- 52:04Speaker 1: place now, But you pointed out all the time with
- 52:06Speaker 1: people who root for Josh Allen, who root for the
- 52:09Speaker 1: Bills to get over the hump. And I just look
- 52:11Speaker 1: at the body of work, and I start agreeing a
- 52:13Speaker 1: lot with Nick Wright on that point. It was like,
- 52:15Speaker 1: this dude, he might kind of be playing against a
- 52:19Speaker 1: seven-seed merchant. He might be playing up against a six-seed merchant.
- 52:23Speaker 1: And when he plays up against great teams, sometimes the
- 52:25Speaker 1: stat lines are good, but he just doesn't get over
- 52:26Speaker 1: the hump.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I watch all these games with Nick, right? And
- 52:29Speaker 2: so there's the obvious Mahomes rivalry thing, right?
- 52:35Speaker 3: Cause you know, I love Nick and we've talked about
- 52:37Speaker 3: this for a long time.
- 52:38Speaker 2: I don't always like how I feel when Nick be
- 52:41Speaker 2: talking about Lamar. If I didn't know Nick as well
- 52:44Speaker 2: as I know him. I would view things through a
- 52:47Speaker 2: bunch of different lids, right?
- 52:49Speaker 1: I've had to delete a few responses because I'm like, man.
- 52:52Speaker 3: But he's not wrong.
- 52:54Speaker 1: His track record is too pure for me to assume
- 52:56Speaker 1: some of the things I want to assume based off
- 52:59Speaker 1: of what I'm reading right now.
- 53:00Speaker 3: But he's not wrong. The thing about it is I
- 53:02Speaker 3: hear what he says by and large.
- 53:04Speaker 2: He's not wrong. But no, with Allen, normally by now,
- 53:07Speaker 2: a quarterback we say is as good as him and
- 53:09Speaker 2: he hasn't won. We're like, so when are you going
- 53:11Speaker 2: to do it as opposed to, I don't know, guys.
- 53:13Speaker 2: I think this is the year.
- 53:14Speaker 3: I think we got it.
- 53:14Speaker 1: Absolutely. I mean, and he's one of the few quarterbacks
- 53:17Speaker 1: who's fresh off of a head coach got fired disaster
- 53:21Speaker 1: playoff game. And nobody's really talking about what you're going
- 53:24Speaker 1: to do for me now.
- 53:25Speaker 3: Oh, it's never on him. It's never on. It's the
- 53:28Speaker 3: damnedest thing. It's never on him. It's been on Lamar.
- 53:30Speaker 2: And look, Lamar has earned that with some objectively poor
- 53:33Speaker 2: play in the postseason. It's so crazy, though, if Mark
- 53:37Speaker 2: Andrews catches that ball, because those guys let him down
- 53:40Speaker 2: that year in Buffalo. If Mark Andrews catches that pass.
- 53:44Speaker 2: do we flip the way we talk about Josh Allen
- 53:47Speaker 2: or are we just, or, well, I ain't really saying we, but,
- 53:51Speaker 2: or like, you know, are people still just rooting for
- 53:54Speaker 2: Josh Allen to make it happen? Like, it's almost as
- 53:56Speaker 2: though the fact that Buffalo has not made it there
- 53:58Speaker 2: is an affront to Josh Allen, the disservice that has
- 54:01Speaker 2: been hoisted upon him by his teammates in the league
- 54:06Speaker 2: and how dare the Chiefs score in 13 seconds. Like, somehow,
- 54:09Speaker 2: scoring in 13 seconds is not, God damn, Patrick Mahomes.
- 54:12Speaker 3: It's poor Josh.
- 54:14Speaker 1: Yes, every time. It's always for Josh. It's always for Josh.
- 54:18Speaker 1: The year you're bringing up after Mark Andrews drops that
- 54:21Speaker 1: pass in the end zone and Josh Allen gets to
- 54:23Speaker 1: take the Chiefs down to the fourth quarter and you
- 54:26Speaker 1: end up blowing that fourth down and you don't get
- 54:28Speaker 1: the quarterback sneak and everybody's talking about, well, how could
- 54:30Speaker 1: you not pick up this blitz? How are they not
- 54:32Speaker 1: able to get this first down? The refs gave them
- 54:35Speaker 1: the wrong spot. It really rarely ever comes back to,
- 54:38Speaker 1: hey man, when they needed Josh Allen in the 2024
- 54:41Speaker 1: AFC Championship game, They didn't get the version of him
- 54:44Speaker 1: that I think that they were expecting.
- 54:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:47Speaker 2: Look, my guy, Mike Greenberg, said Josh Allen's the best
- 54:49Speaker 2: quarterback he's ever seen. And I'm like, brother, did you
- 54:51Speaker 2: even see Dan Marino?
- 54:52Speaker 3: Right. Like, Dan Marino the one I need to step
- 54:54Speaker 3: up and be like, hey, fellas, you need to go turn.
- 54:57Speaker 1: Yeah. Go check the tape.
- 54:58Speaker 3: That guy came.
- 54:59Speaker 1: From the future. Right?
- 55:00Speaker 3: 100%.
- 55:00Speaker 2: Like, Dan Marino could play right now slow as Christmas.
- 55:06Speaker 3: Because let me tell you what wasn't slow. that right
- 55:08Speaker 3: yeah 100 he's like he's throwing a dart and that
- 55:11Speaker 3: bitch go 50 yards down the field on a line
- 55:14Speaker 3: yes no no up just.
- 55:16Speaker 1: It's like how people used to talk about uh seeing
- 55:22Speaker 1: a pill of aspirin every time nolan ryan threw a fastball.
- 55:25Speaker 2: What am i supposed to do with this what am
- 55:27Speaker 2: i supposed to do.
- 55:28Speaker 3: With this uh The Ravens, I mean, they've got a
- 55:32Speaker 3: big coach story. They made the change.
- 55:34Speaker 2: I am shocked by the level of excitement that people
- 55:36Speaker 2: have about John Harbaugh coaching the Giants because there's a
- 55:41Speaker 2: reason they fired him.
- 55:43Speaker 3: And they were going to fire him eight years ago.
- 55:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 55:47Speaker 3: Except Lamar came in and saved his job.
- 55:49Speaker 1: Saved his job. Right.
- 55:50Speaker 2: So now they got a first year guy. They still
- 55:53Speaker 2: mentors a Harbaugh guy, right? Because the Harbaugh brothers, it's
- 55:56Speaker 2: really weird. They switched coaches between them. Harbaugh's not even
- 56:00Speaker 2: there and they went and got a Harbaugh guy. People
- 56:02Speaker 2: speak very highly of him. Remind me who they gave
- 56:06Speaker 2: the offense to.
- 56:07Speaker 1: Declan Doyle.
- 56:09Speaker 3: So I admit, all I know about him is who
- 56:12Speaker 3: his daddy is. That is not a positive.
- 56:16Speaker 1: I want to be fair to Declan because it seemed
- 56:19Speaker 1: like he was trying to carve out his own space.
- 56:21Speaker 1: But every time I see that last name, I'm like,
- 56:23Speaker 1: ain't that dude whose pops was?
- 56:26Speaker 3: Yeah, his pops was the allegedly racist. Yeah, the allegedly
- 56:29Speaker 3: racist strength coach.
- 56:31Speaker 1: Dude talking about players locks in the weight room at
- 56:35Speaker 1: Iowa and where he going to send them back to.
- 56:37Speaker 3: I mean, they basically had a revolution. That actually worked.
- 56:41Speaker 1: Yes. The dude basically ended up on Urban Meyer's staff.
- 56:45Speaker 3: Yeah, Urban Meyer tried to hire him and they were like,
- 56:46Speaker 3: what the fuck?
- 56:47Speaker 1: Get this motherfucker out there. This is the big leagues, dog.
- 56:51Speaker 1: We ain't got to put up with this. There's people
- 56:53Speaker 1: in this locker room that will put their hands on
- 56:56Speaker 1: this man.
- 56:56Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like, nah, partner, this ain't.
- 56:58Speaker 2: Like, in the pros, they can beat up the strength coach. Like,
- 57:02Speaker 2: in college, strength coach put their hands on you. In
- 57:04Speaker 2: the pros, they might got a chance.
- 57:07Speaker 1: It's an edge rusher offensive tackle right now. Like, I
- 57:10Speaker 1: could take that fine. That low conduct detrimental to the team,
- 57:13Speaker 1: I'll take that 200K fine.
- 57:14Speaker 2: The problem is, if you do beat up the strength coach,
- 57:17Speaker 2: ain't nobody really trying to tell you that you got fine.
- 57:20Speaker 1: And you can't tell me to do four sets of
- 57:21Speaker 1: nothing if I know it's somebody in here that's putting
- 57:24Speaker 1: hands on you, dog. You go get on that treadmill, boss.
- 57:30Speaker 1: talking to me about my weight.
- 57:32Speaker 2: Yeah, you're a fat ass out of my face. But
- 57:37Speaker 2: I will say this, as much as you and I
- 57:38Speaker 2: think it's preposterous that people think that you're just going
- 57:41Speaker 2: to get another Lamar Jackson.
- 57:42Speaker 3: If I were Lamar Jackson, I would try to leave
- 57:44Speaker 3: no doubt about this.
- 57:46Speaker 1: Absolutely. Absolutely. This needs to be a 2023 type of
- 57:51Speaker 1: season for Lamar, 2024 type of season for Lamar, where
- 57:54Speaker 1: you can come back and say, at whatever the biggest
- 57:56Speaker 1: number is, you're going to add a couple million to
- 57:58Speaker 1: that and then hand that to me. For five, six years,
- 58:01Speaker 1: all right? We need to be talking about Mahomes-level deals.
- 58:04Speaker 1: I want something that I can give off to my grandkids' grandkids.
- 58:08Speaker 1: That's the type of money that I need.
- 58:10Speaker 2: Now, as we wrap this, the name that I did
- 58:13Speaker 2: not mention because I don't think they are a Super
- 58:15Speaker 2: Bowl contender, the best team in the league for the
- 58:19Speaker 2: last eight seasons, without question, has been the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 58:24Speaker 2: Patrick Mahomes is coming off of an ACL tear after
- 58:27Speaker 2: what was clearly his worst season and the team's worst season.
- 58:32Speaker 2: He has not played as well in the last two
- 58:34Speaker 2: or three years as he had played in the four
- 58:38Speaker 2: or five previous. I don't think there's any question about that, though.
- 58:41Speaker 2: Some of that has to do with supporting cast. I
- 58:44Speaker 2: think that in this day and age, because ACL tears
- 58:47Speaker 2: are not as devastating as they used to be. I
- 58:49Speaker 2: think we undersell a bit that it is still an
- 58:52Speaker 2: ACL tear. There's still a process in terms of coming back.
- 58:56Speaker 2: I personally have no idea what we are going to
- 59:00Speaker 2: get out of him and his team that is getting old.
- 59:02Speaker 2: I don't think there's anything left of Travis Kelsey.
- 59:05Speaker 1: It ain't just the team. The man is not 26
- 59:09Speaker 1: years old anymore. He ain't 27 anymore. I kind of
- 59:12Speaker 1: had to recalibrate for a second after he signed his extension.
- 59:15Speaker 1: I was like, oh shit, that's right. This dude's going
- 59:17Speaker 1: to be in his mid-30s pretty soon. He's already over
- 59:21Speaker 1: that age 30 threshold and fresh off an ACL tear.
- 59:26Speaker 1: I'm not so quick to assume that anybody can be
- 59:28Speaker 1: like Tom Brady. coming off an ACL tear going into
- 59:31Speaker 1: their age 30 season.
- 59:33Speaker 2: I don't know what to expect, like what this Chiefs
- 59:35Speaker 2: thing is, because again, guys, you know, cats who are
- 59:39Speaker 2: ahead of the game and then the game catches up
- 59:40Speaker 2: to them.
- 59:41Speaker 3: Andy Reid, line one.
- 59:42Speaker 1: Yes, 100%. And sometimes it ain't even the scheme. Just
- 59:47Speaker 1: go look at the depth chart. You go look at
- 59:49Speaker 1: their depth chart and judge it up against some of
- 59:51Speaker 1: the other teams that we've been asking questions about whether
- 59:53Speaker 1: or not they should genuinely have expectations to win. the
- 59:57Speaker 1: Chiefs are worse than a lot of contenders across multiple
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: positions on both sides of the ball. And I think
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: that for all the, I think that there's been a
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: lot of conversation about, oh, we're bringing Eric Biennemi back
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: to be the offensive coordinator and that's supposed to improve
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: things and we're holding people accountable. I don't think accountability
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: is the problem. I think they have a guys can't
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: get open problem. I think they have a defense ain't
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: as loaded as it used to be problem. And now
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: we're still asking Patrick Mahomes to be a superhero. That,
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: to me, is a much bigger conversation than anything else.
- 1:00:29Speaker 1: And you add on top of what you just said
- 1:00:32Speaker 1: with Andy Reid maybe kind of being left behind by
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: the current meta in this league because he has always
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: been an air raid. I want to spread it out,
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: get more passes off. We're going to be in the gun.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: All of that stuff has been much more of Andy
- 1:00:44Speaker 1: Reid's story for the last decade than ever trying to
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: keep up with what was going on with the Shanahan
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: and McVeigh tree.
- 1:00:50Speaker 2: Yeah, no, this– This is a truly fascinating NFL season.
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: I think that is the best way that we could
- 1:00:56Speaker 2: term it. I think we managed to get through all
- 1:00:58Speaker 2: the teams. We got through all the quarterbacks. We did
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: great work there, baby.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: That was, that was, that was.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: And got it done under an hour. That's a pro's work.
- 1:01:04Speaker 3: With the Lakers.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: With those Lakers in there. That's what I'm talking about, man.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Deontay Lee, check him out at Durango, covering football for them.
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: My brother, I greatly appreciate you.
