- 0:00Dimity: Welcome to the Bright Star Kids Parenting Podcast.
- 0:03Susan: You know what everything you see online makes you feel like you're doing it wrong?
- 0:07Dimity: Our Bright Star Kids Parenting Podcast is the opposite of that.
- 0:10Dimity: We're two mums at completely different stages.
- 0:13Dimity: I've got a teenager.
- 0:14Dimity: I've got two little kids and in the middle of the chaos.
- 0:17Susan: And I'm on the other side of it.
- 0:18Dimity: Every week we take one thing about running a house and a family and just tell each other about it.
- 0:23Susan: Nobody's an expert.
- 0:24Susan: That's kind of the point.
- 0:25Dimity: So let's introduce ourselves.
- 0:27Dimity: Susan, tell me one interesting fact about yourself.
- 0:29Susan: Okay, well, I came over from Ireland to Australia around 22 years ago, and I've never been in the ocean.
- 0:36Susan: The Australian ocean.
- 0:38Dimity: Okay.
- 0:39Dimity: Why?
- 0:40Susan: Okay, there's a few things.
- 0:42Susan: First of all, I like the water to be around 29 degrees.
- 0:46Dimity: Okay.
- 0:50Susan: So my swimming pool is very, very warm.
- 0:52Dimity: Okay.
- 0:52Susan: And there's loads of creepy things in the Australian waters that I've just been terrified of.
- 0:58Susan: Like the all those bottly blue bottles things.
- 1:02Susan: Like they have heard scary stories about them.
- 1:05Dimity: Okay.
- 1:06Susan: Sharks
- 1:06Dimity: Can get you.
- 1:08Susan: And the rip.
- 1:09Dimity: Okay.
- 1:11Susan: I am terrified of those.
- 1:12Susan: Well, because I'm not a strong swimmer.
- 1:14Susan: So that has been one of the some of the reasons why.
- 1:18Dimity: I love the ocean.
- 1:19Dimity: I do a thing called Sea Gals, where we go in the mornings at sunrise, dip in the ocean, go and get some breakfast.
- 1:25Susan: It's really lovely.
- 1:26Dimity: You should come along.
- 1:27Susan: Maybe.
- 1:27Dimity: I'll give you the race.
- 1:28Susan: So tell me, Dimity, what about you?
- 1:30Susan: What's a kind of an interesting thing about you?
- 1:33Dimity: I have never left Australia.
- 1:34Dimity: So I've never travelled overseas.
- 1:37Dimity: But I would love to go to Japan.
- 1:39Susan: Yeah, well, I'm going to Japan in in a month's time.
- 1:43Dimity: Oh, how exciting.
- 1:44Susan: Yeah.
- 1:44Susan: And I think that's for me, that's kind of weird.
- 1:47Susan: In Ireland, it could be so easy to get to places.
- 1:50Susan: Like literally, um, you can hop on a plane and be in like Italy in like two or three hours.
- 1:56Dimity: Crazy.
- 1:56Susan: Australia's just so far away.
- 1:58Susan: And so there's heaps of people I found, um, in Australia who've never been outside.
- 2:03Susan: So for me, that's weird.
- 2:04Dimity: Okay, Sue, what else?
- 2:06Susan: I pretty much always have hobbies on the go.
- 2:08Susan: So I find it hard to just stop doing anything and just being very kind of, I guess, have nothing on.
- 2:16Susan: So yeah, either I'm either gardening or yeah, doing some kind of craft or a puzzle or reading books.
- 2:23Susan: I usually have two or three books on at a time.
- 2:26Dimity: I can't do that.
- 2:26Susan: So tell me something about you.
- 2:28Dimity: Um, I used to be a hairdresser.
- 2:30Susan: Did you always like hairdressing when you were a kid?
- 2:32Dimity: It kind of just fell into my lap a little bit.
- 2:33Dimity: I went to my friend um and she said, like, we need someone to fill this spot.
- 2:38Dimity: And I was like, "Oh, well, I'm actually looking for a job."
- 2:40Susan: Cool.
- 2:40Dimity: And then it kind of just fell in line.
- 2:41Dimity: But then I had Poppy and it just didn't really fit in with our lifestyle anymore.
- 2:45Dimity: And tell me another thing, Sue.
- 2:47Susan: Okay, well, another weird thing that people don't necessarily know about me is I love hip-hop music.
- 2:52Susan: And so much so that I actually do hip-hop dancing.
- 2:55Susan: So I started that in my 40s and doing like yeah, beginners hip-hop dancing.
- 3:01Susan: I was absolutely awful at it.
- 3:03Susan: But again, I like a challenge.
- 3:05Susan: And I do choreography sometimes, so I learn a whole dance with my whole uh group of people, and then we perform in front of hundreds of people.
- 3:13Susan: Yeah, wow.
- 3:14Susan: Which is so cool.
- 3:15Dimity: So good.
- 3:16Susan: Yeah, and what would you like in musical theater?
- 3:18Dimity: I do, I do.
- 3:18Dimity: I love musical theater.
- 3:19Dimity: I've done, um, I actually studied theatre.
- 3:22Susan: Yeah, I did not know that.
- 3:23Dimity: Yeah, I've done some community theatre shows.
- 3:25Dimity: I've been in things like Mamma Mia.
- 3:27Susan: Oh, wow.
- 3:28Dimity: Wicked.
- 3:28Susan: That's brilliant.
- 3:29Susan: Do you sing?
- 3:30Dimity: Yeah, I sing.
- 3:30Dimity: I think that's probably the thing I'm best at.
- 3:33Dimity: I haven't been on stage since I had Poppy, which is you have three and a half stage.
- 3:36Dimity: I know, I think that's probably a goal of mine is to get back on stage.
- 3:39Dimity: Yeah, it's nice too.
- 3:40Susan: I think it's really important for mums, especially, to do something for themselves, which is why I love my hip-hop dancing.
- 3:46Susan: And that it's really good for the kids to actually see as well. Their mum does have a life.
- 3:51Dimity: Yes.
- 3:51Susan: You know.
- 3:52Dimity: Exactly.
- 3:52Susan: Okay, so tell me something else.
- 3:54Dimity: Okay, well, I think a lot of people presume that I'm super organised because I own a name-label company.
- 4:00Dimity: And look, I do like to be organised, and I think I am pretty good, but I think the thing that I really like is systems.
- 4:07Dimity: Okay.
- 4:08Susan: So I like to simplify my life, and that is by creating ways of doing things that are fast and easy and kind of finding the things that annoy me in life.
- 4:21Susan: I love problem solving.
- 4:22Susan: Um, and I think that's some of the stuff as well for this podcast.
- 4:26Susan: We'll share these things that we like to do, and they're not perfect, we're not saying that you have to do it, but we're just sharing the things that we think, yeah, that has helped me, and maybe it might help somebody else.
- 4:38Dimity: Yes, made our lives a little bit easier.
- 4:40Susan: Yeah.
- 4:40Susan: The good thing about this podcast is that we're both very different.
- 4:44Dimity: Very different.
- 4:44Susan: But we get along really well, and hopefully you'll be, you'll feel like we're your friends or like your big sisters who are one step ahead, maybe.
- 4:53Susan: And maybe you're also gonna help us to learn too.
- 4:57Susan: You know, that's what this whole podcast is about.
- 4:59Susan: Like you're gonna be able to hopefully comment and help us to understand maybe there is even better ways to do things.
- 5:06Susan: So join us every week.
- 5:08Susan: We'll be putting out a new episode on lots of random things that we just are interested in and want to talk about.
- 5:15Susan: Thank you for listening, and we'll see you in the next episode.
