- 3:24This is a thicket of chairs and tables thank you so much for being here at the village underground
- 3:30thanks to the comedy seller for facilitating this to sub stack broadcasting all over the world this
- 3:35live episode of Zepz Live uncutable conversations we've had a fabulous time in New York a true
- 3:42all-american welcome yesterday with a roving gunman which is fabulous sorry I was impressed by how
- 3:53cavalierly everybody took it um we were at a bar and my friend was like oh there's a gunman
- 3:58looking at her phone and in some countries that would be caused to stop drinking
- 4:06but my friends were just like where and she goes 51st street and they're like ah
- 4:13have a drink we're on 49 and it's a lovely day if you're not if you're watching online and you're
- 4:20not in New York City it's a beautiful cool breezy day in New York no it's like 37 degrees Celsius
- 4:28which in Fahrenheit yeah that's right this guy says this is the surface of the south of Mexico
- 4:37I'm without further ado let us go underway this is this is actually part of a world tour where
- 4:41we're doing a podcast pretty much every day with some fascinating person streaming a live on
- 4:45sub-stack and if you're not subscribed to one of couple of conversations you should be
- 4:50at least to get the backlog of all of the awesome episodes that we've done thus far including
- 4:54this one you're about to see with the one and only Matt Welch, Norm Dwarman, Camille Posca,
- 5:01and what's what's your step and we yeah so Camille Camille is just
- 5:14I mean I was on the show today one of the live screen just to be cry but it's true that's true
- 5:28I was like one of those really heartfelt kind of like I'm a bro that I'm also sensitive inside
- 5:34but it was ugly I mean there was snot and all sorts of stuff it was great the cameras had to get cut
- 5:37no I loved it so I want to talk about what is that you got a you've got your
- 5:46mind already with myself this is definitely you don't have here on the chest if you don't get
- 5:50salt we can find out do we have streaming music I want to tell and so Colin Hughes unfortunately got
- 6:00his day wrong and so he's going to be this and that Moynihan who's also going to be here
- 6:08he doesn't know where he is there's always asked me to cut those we said he's
- 6:13he's he's you're up what's on the thing he's converting I'm sure he's having a great time but Jesse
- 6:19single will be with us for a little segment called Jew in the Hot Seats this is any good god
- 6:27damn reason why Jesse single isn't with us right now yeah because he's a pussy yeah
- 6:31yeah he will yes he shot shot shoot him for me I like you shoot him I want to talk about about
- 6:41comedy and cold air and satire and South Park because I've had a sense lately that it's entirely
- 6:48possible but maybe we've been doing the whole anti-Trump thing wrong and instead of just going
- 6:53directly at Trump in order to try to reclaim America using politics the best way just to get
- 6:58cartoons in any other type of a penis and mock him I don't do anything works right they tried
- 7:05they tried to try walk through 2016 and 2020 Mark and then cold air I think he's almost
- 7:12indestructible oh great yeah not everybody I mean what's the guy been through it but his
- 7:18identity the generalist I mean there's like a theory which smart people understand better
- 7:29than I do that Matt will understand this one if I'm in my hand would hear it we bring it back
- 7:33to Scandinavia in some way to be sweet but I'm sure that it's true that like in authoritarian
- 7:37places often the bragging will find it more difficult to deal with terrorists and artists and
- 7:42musicians and pop rockers that it is to deal with actual official formal political opposition yeah
- 7:48well I mean a lot of it is that you can do things that are that are more subtle so in the case of
- 7:54Central Europe in particular you can you know right between the lines in your place and have lots of
- 8:00heavy allegories like trybacker and metster I think like thinking about this in terms of
- 8:13you know what can we do to stop Trump this time this is all that's already part of the problem
- 8:17I mean like what I think well if one is really interested in opposing the things that a very
- 8:23powerful person is doing is that you oppose the things that the powerful person is doing I'm glad
- 8:29for that episode I mean it's the funniest thing in the world but just the fact that they're
- 8:34right when Paramount settled with the White House and White Right May got their fuck you money
- 8:40it was a nice welcome reminder that like we should have these sort of basic civic self-respect
- 8:47to just do a lot of this to anyone who has power and that's that's not necessarily a message
- 8:51for comedians just fuck knows they've been doing this now for 10 years very ineffectually but
- 8:57it's actually a pretty good for the rest of us like you don't have to pretend that this is
- 9:02that this is more serious than it is we're worth more of your attention that it actually is
- 9:08and so seeing a micro penis in the desert maybe it's okay if you get a female when you
- 9:11were blubbering like little babies you would talk about about the importance of kind of
- 9:17transcending our differences our identities this will shock anyone who knows can be able to hear
- 9:22and talk about how we have to get over our identity politics but you know he's basically saying
- 9:26that like there's only so far the politics and tribalism can take you but eventually we have to
- 9:32become one with like the universe or some shit like that I was listening but yeah I mean I was just
- 9:37I'm like how well how do you feel about the the resistance capital R well interesting to talk
- 9:45about the South Park thing in particular first I watched the episode today because I'd only
- 9:50seen the clips before and as I was watching it what struck me was that it wasn't just going after
- 9:57Trump it was actually just trying to be funny he was taking the piss out of the left that
- 10:02Carton is denigrating NPR which has just had its funding taken away and he's promoting it going
- 10:07away precisely because he doesn't have them to ridicule anymore that's why he's outraged and I
- 10:12think that's that's the power of South Park it's one of the things that has helped to keep it
- 10:16of the legitimate reliably funny franchise for a very long time they take the prisoners and
- 10:22everyone is a target and Trump is also a target in a show like that I don't know what question
- 10:28you asked me I don't know if any really something brought me a gin and tonic it only takes one
- 10:34so you go fabulous I mean I think what would help take them down if they can make fun of this
- 10:39make fun of people who are just crazy around them at Tucker Carlson and can you so
- 10:44always this whole conspiratorial megabase that believes in aliens and and definitely going on
- 10:50to the sea and this I think is throw around for to make people stop me and wonder but in the end
- 10:58I take it down don't think that we'll take them down is bad results like he did these tariffs
- 11:04if the prices had all shot up yeah that would be the beginning of taking them down or
- 11:09or if the border didn't come down to almost zero for us it's down to begin to take them down
- 11:14but very hard to take them down with jokes I don't know how do you hurt Candace Owens and yeah
- 11:18Tucker Carlson I think it's not a famous but they're happy to tell everyone else you can't hurt
- 11:23them but the notion that he somehow covers for these people that he to me that's that's what
- 11:28would you know make him look worse to me let's talk about Tucker Carlson and you know Megan Kelly
- 11:34and the and podcasts to stand more broadly you know they've always been saying that like the
- 11:38podcast election and like podcast to the new place where people get their information and
- 11:42have inspiring conversations I'm speaking disparagingly even as I both my living from podcasts
- 11:48yeah all the podcasts right now but nonetheless it is not unproblematic for there to be a
- 11:53fracturing of the media landscape in such a way that everybody can get all their information from
- 11:57Candace Owens and that was a fight I just know like talks to these people all the time I
- 12:05everyone here like does life in the table right if you don't you shoot what would you even do
- 12:10none has an amazing just so patient with all of these nuts sandwiches and has it worked out
- 12:18for you like I mean first of all like everything in life a lot of this is just to entertain myself
- 12:25that's what I feel like to and I hate to say but I do think that even watching the news in some
- 12:32way I have to take him as it is to to entertain myself and so I like to talk to these people
- 12:39because they fascinate um has it worked out I don't think people were worried that I was going to
- 12:46help them like platforming them I don't think that's been the case at all these people who the day
- 12:52they ever came on my phone so in that sense I don't think I should be part of the problem
- 12:59I think Josh a pursuant to your actual question like we all forget or have taken for granted
- 13:06don't really appreciate the size of the collapse of the institutional media business it's
- 13:12collapse way 80% like conservatively maybe like 90% in a matter of three or four decades all the core
- 13:21businesses that are wrapped around journalism are just utter nothing prepared what they used to
- 13:26have from LA the LA Times no joke used to be a thousand pages today it's 20 now like it's just
- 13:31it's you can't fathom the difference and so in an atmosphere where that business is finished
- 13:37and where the trust of media is even below trust of people in Congress it's like
- 13:41the lowest regarded institution in like human history at this point um then yeah there's
- 13:48going to be a lot of a lot of competition for eyeballs I don't when your balls or whatever balls
- 13:54uh but like I don't like I don't I don't think it's worth getting upset about the popularity of
- 14:01cancer um uh because you can't really do a lot about it but you can just get in there and try
- 14:07to compete yourself and not be moan or not like just look back at what once was and like
- 14:12be trying to to revive 1990 might be silly to get upset about something but still wise to be
- 14:18worried about yeah I find it hopefully makes me a little disbanded in in large part because as
- 14:24known as in the game earlier they have all manner of completely insane beliefs they also have
- 14:29massive audiences and there's something that is pretty distressing about that because it
- 14:34suggests that lots and lots of people are either as crazy as they are or willing to tolerate it as
- 14:39you know yeah so it was a lot of time I mean it's also really stressful to go off against people
- 14:44who are that chick crazy how do you do it no matter like what is your business for a lot of pressure
- 14:48chest I wondered about this for a while and I talked about before you know when I was a kid
- 14:53the weekly world knows in a national choir and a super market checkout yeah they had huge
- 14:58circulation always yeah and the stories that they would run were very similar to the stuff that
- 15:03Candace Owens and Tucker and we did this is true and we didn't we knew not to take it seriously but
- 15:09now it's all for like Tucker Carlson's the best example he does he'll interview Putin and then
- 15:14talk about Owens beneath the sea right and and it's it's still not clear to any of us how much
- 15:21people take this stuff seriously how much of it is just it it it satisfies that appetite for
- 15:27entertainment like the weekly world news once did I'm not clear on I'm not even sure that it
- 15:32matters I'm not even sure it's less dangerous if it's just people not to be serious I'm not sure
- 15:37because I think the collapse of liberal democracy can happen through a lazy cook off any
- 15:43of bullshit just as much as it can through diligent commitment to untrue it's that sort of a
- 15:49too deep I think I didn't have to believe a bunch of stuff that's bad shit crazy for the bad
- 15:59shit crazy stuff to will still be corrosive to the way that the society function correct and I
- 16:03think there's we've had a lot of corrosion in the last 11 years 12 years the populist era
- 16:10writ large in this country not just Trump and also the rest of the world I think has been corrosive
- 16:16you know like people used to make fun of oh my norms are being violated so yeah norms were
- 16:22kind of something were our kind of important yeah like the you know we're just listening to the
- 16:27radio driving down starting about this came earlier today and they had a report on the local
- 16:33news radio about what do you know Trump was it was traveling internationally this week probably
- 16:38not it wasn't really talked about but he was just out opening new Trump golf courses that's
- 16:42what he's been doing the last three or eight so it's like and he's like yeah you know the best
- 16:47of the golf course ever and best golf course in the world this world is in history and like
- 16:52that's kind of corrosive we didn't use to have presents who were making business transactions
- 16:58branded on their last name while they were in office this fucking weird man and I think we've had
- 17:04a lot of those norms go go away and it's genuinely distressing but I don't think that it's
- 17:12you know the solution to it isn't nostalgia for time to camp you know no but it could be
- 17:18inspiration towards a time that doesn't yet exist there which people are yeah not quite swimming
- 17:22and it's quite a lot of shit although there's a there's a sense in which one can very quickly
- 17:27become to get a nostalgic for a time when everything was better when actually about five years ago
- 17:33was just the left that was seriously deranged and believed all kinds of crazy things and even now
- 17:39in opposition it's Jasmine Crockett who gets the glowing 30-minute read in the Atlanta that is
- 17:46just this massive profile of a person who is just clearly totally self-absorbed not particularly
- 17:52but or at least is actually playing a person who is dumber than she actually is in order to get
- 17:58by political to gain some sort of political traction that's odd and that suggests to me in something
- 18:03that's even more distressing than just like Tucker Carlson is a bit nuts and he's very influential
- 18:09Tucker Carlson is a bit nuts and he's very influential and the greatest city on earth
- 18:14New York City you may have like a democratic socialist gets elected who wants to turn all the
- 18:19bodegas into state run grocery store chains like I don't know like everyone seems a little bit
- 18:26batshit and I am waiting for the the silent majority to rise up and say enough of this bullshit
- 18:32they're pretty fun to just go back at the basement it's really fun and silence I mean the yes of course
- 18:37is not a uniquely right wing phenomenon but that's what makes it even more worrying when you see
- 18:42that you know there's always this kind of pendulum swing isn't there apologies for the societies
- 18:47or left wing they've become people right wing you hope that there's a kind of a medium that is
- 18:50like you know reasonable but at the moment the swing is just getting wild to such a degree that
- 18:58like what do you think what is your sense does it is it gonna just sort of shrink back to some sort
- 19:03of normalcy or because if it keeps spinning out wider and wider and wider it becomes like
- 19:08don't junior or talk about versus IOC or you know whatever then that's you know that's a
- 19:14recipe for serious to be yeah I don't know we will have some we will have some crisis that
- 19:21crises tend to focus the attention there will be some crisis no bad no we'll have a
- 19:28bad crisis I think the word pretty much implies bad I had a great crisis for the day
- 19:35so this is a prognostications of doom from you um no it's just like look at the fucking calendar
- 19:41like the like sickle be bad things happen to happen and every presidency they happen and every
- 19:45uh let's try to have a pandemic it was bad but that's bringing in just a lift of the pandemic didn't
- 19:52make us that didn't make us any message right no it made us crazier and and the thing with the
- 19:56pandemic like the financial crisis like 9-11 is that uh and it cannot be understood or overstated
- 20:02that the uh roll of the elites the people who are defending the norms they all really fucked up
- 20:08all of that really really bad I mean like three years ago we're three and a half years ago the
- 20:13president of the United States was going around and saying this is only a pandemic at the unvaccinated
- 20:18and that what we really need to do is kick Joe Rogan off Spotify and like sensor and Paul so he
- 20:24doesn't tell people that maybe clock masks don't work and all this kind of stuff that is nuts and
- 20:28like firing members of the military because they didn't take a vaccine that maybe they didn't really
- 20:33need to take um all of this happened pretty recently um and it was the elite structures in like
- 20:39scientific journals in in the NIH and the CDC they were enforcing this very um uh non-scientific
- 20:48kind of groupthink uh set of ideas that was incredibly illiberal and it led to this
- 20:54led to a self-debasement of the people who we should be normally looking to to solve problems so
- 21:00there's a reason why people you know I remember a tablet magazine with a long-fawning profile of RFK
- 21:04when we started running it's kind of bizarre and fight trillion words and and saying basically
- 21:09since the elites have messed everything up then maybe every conspiracy theory is true I'm kind
- 21:13of wondering if that was kind of it and that's not a great conclusion but like the opening bit
- 21:20is like the elites did screw up a lot of stuff but we shouldn't sleep on it you know so in terms of
- 21:24like they had a you know you mentioned platforming on like this idea that we shouldn't talk to
- 21:28people who have bad ideas because that will be the exposure uh I think everyone here probably
- 21:33disagrees with that notion but it's about how you do it right I mean the it's about
- 21:40modeling a constructed way and pushing back on do you worry at all about platforming like is
- 21:46a little limited uh I think that the people who because we said before that there are people
- 21:56who are platforming like you know Darryl Cooper or came to sauce and Darryl Cooper is not crazy
- 22:02who are really platforming because they want to spread his word just explain your job
- 22:09Darryl Cooper is the um he's got by marga made on twitter he's a serious world war two revisionist who
- 22:16has said things that sounded like the Holocaust was an accident who they had a full depend
- 22:22people that church was installed by the Jews in order to pursue world war two by Zionist
- 22:29finances things like that um so platforming just means putting somebody on the air
- 22:36Donahue who used to put on KKK members I mean also it's about how landish and outrageous people
- 22:41were platformed in the 70s to be taken on and confronted yeah that I'm all for now that yeah
- 22:48it's just the idea of presenting people in order to aid them as they spread their word that's
- 22:55worries me it's dangerous especially as we all uh retreated to bubbles and what we used to have
- 23:02even though we thought we had totally free speech we talked about it before we had gatekeepers
- 23:08and um though we may not want gatekeepers we benefited probably as a whole from those gatekeepers
- 23:15who kept us kind of within a certain range of what we were going to engage with as a as a
- 23:23polity I would put it that we don't range anymore I would put it that we've benefited less from
- 23:28their gatekeeping function and more by their uh sort of leadership or actions by example
- 23:35of producing actual good bits of work and so you would naturally kind of gravitate to that oh
- 23:42you know if the Washington Post is covering let's say they decided to cover the Portland
- 23:47protest in 2020 I could I could you know back in the old day you could trust the Washington
- 23:51Post is going to do a good job including 2020 you could trust that Nancy Ronald is going to do a good
- 23:56job but like seriously we were the reason why she went there is that we were sitting with Jacob
- 24:02Siebel in my front yard and like who can we trust about reporting in Portland right now and the
- 24:06answer was nobody and so we said get on the line um and that's a bad state of affairs for the
- 24:11media and that's not the gatekeeping function it's not like who gets to talk or who doesn't it's
- 24:15like who gets to do good work and now because of the institutional collapse and I'll
- 24:20self sabotage I think on the part of the sort of professional morays of some people in journalism
- 24:26that's kind of gone so I think that's the function I mean in terms of who you talk to but you know
- 24:31there's a weird kind of uncanny valley where people will give you shit for talking to someone who's
- 24:36a bit bad but they would know that if you spoke to someone been alive it would be fine because
- 24:41there's a journalist he greets a newspaper yeah I will get much less shit if I do a podcast
- 24:48episode with you know someone who's been to japan murder then with someone who said something
- 24:53that's a little bit off script in a strange way and as a result a lot of people and a lot of
- 24:58journalists and a lot of broadcasts don't talk to people who are a little bit off script for them
- 25:01and that is what leads to what you're talking about with the Washington Post where you people
- 25:05can't trust it because it's being reported from inside of public because those reporters don't
- 25:08talk to anybody who doesn't think like that you see that's starting to change now the New York time
- 25:12so anytime the the Democrats lose a presidential election there's like over the
- 25:16this great six-month season of like hmm I wonder what a Republican thinks there's another problem
- 25:24isn't there that news stories are now basically sold all the car it's not like you buy the New York
- 25:30times and then you have any picture way through the entire thing every story basically
- 25:36loads of guys based on its enticement to get you to click on it on an individual basis and that's
- 25:42a perverse incentive to gin up the story to very often actually read headlines that the story
- 25:47doesn't even come through on right and that story is a disappointment but the headline entices you
- 25:53and this is just another thing to add to that list of things that are making our information
- 25:58what the shots coming down I'm already buzzing from a few sips here I'm in the last
- 26:03by train of thought I get to know you don't know I don't want to all right it's for Jesse when he
- 26:10gets his bitch out okay yeah all right show me uh let's play a little game of uh
- 26:17a funk merry kill and I'll give you some things and I want to hear you flesh out you three who you
- 26:25would make love to who you would spend the rest of your life with and who you would murder so first
- 26:34up don't Trump JD Vance topic constant I mean it was just gonna easy one out of the way first I
- 26:47mean me and JD Vance are gonna make sweet sweet love it's just because JD Vance he softs you know
- 26:54and he has soft hands he's a gentle man from the lecture but I won't be gentle yeah I won't be
- 26:59gentle there you go I'm again you're forcing me to do this I don't want to do no no no you can
- 27:03you can I'm thought of protest as much as you want to know um I'm gonna marry Donald Trump
- 27:08and it's just just so I can redeem him so I can help him but because I feel like a lot of people
- 27:13would want to kill him and I'm not going to do it okay I think I'll leave him with love I'll leave
- 27:18with love and Tucker I'll kill him because you're forcing me to murder someone but maybe I'm helping
- 27:24okay does he want to have a haunting and I did anyone have a different opinion about those
- 27:27things yeah I would I would kill JD Vance I hate him more than any politician I really did
- 27:37test this I don't know why that hurts me I guess I would have to I guess I would have to
- 27:43fuck Tucker Carlson because he hates gays so much and I think Trump I would marry Trump because I
- 27:52actually think Trump would be interesting and good company over the long time yeah that's true
- 27:57he'd be entertaining I'm not gonna have to sleep with him Melania is stuck with him she gave him he

- 28:37so I'm just going to get it let's go let's go
- 28:41oh no I mean the fuck I will see for obvious straight reasoning
- 28:53obvious to me I don't want to be for everybody I think that you marry Bernie Sanders for
- 29:01that's a good choice yeah not for the breath or anything like that he won't live that long
- 29:07exactly it is as I suspect to me as well as it's an inheritance play is this what you just
- 29:14find your time and you get to inherit three houses it's gonna be awesome and then you know we just
- 29:20like guess if we're going I know the piece loving hippie at heart but if we're going to murder
- 29:25somebody the guy is gonna run to you okay any any impressive opinion let me look I mean
- 29:32no no I'm not running I'm running I'm an important week in wife so yeah you're
- 29:40a zero you're too easy all right come on next uh the next to the trio is Joe Rogan
- 29:48hmm Black Spreeman hmm and Theo Vaughan man that this is hard because who's gonna get it
- 29:58I always start there because yes that's where my mind is huh
- 30:06yeah this is hard I mean you Joe Rogan is a great guy so you want to marry Joe no no no no
- 30:12I mean I don't mean great for society I mean he's lovely he's a tabooly teddy bear you just want
- 30:17us good great for society it's fine I think it's great that he has people listening to truck drivers
- 30:22listening to physicists for three hours and I think I don't really know what I don't really know
- 30:26what Theo Vaughan looks like but I think he's hot right or hot or he's hot or not he's got a bit of a
- 30:31strong does he no a mullet a mullet sure the front party the front business heard what I heard
- 30:39I had strong sure in the front long in the back oh that's not a day I'm not a strong
- 30:45else you poor Matthew Welch has lived his entire life not knowing what long is he told him
- 30:53the English language is rich my friend I would know this if you gave it up it's not that rich
- 31:00I think you'd have to go you'd have to kill Lake Spreeman yeah yeah and you'd marry uh
- 31:04Mary Jo and you'd uh no I'll switch Joe and Theo in that particular sequence okay
- 31:10very good wait you fuck Joe Rogan be well it's mixed be fucked by Joe Rogan yeah we know we know who
- 31:17by the bottom I know who's bottom I'm I am Scotts Jamaican we have standards here

- 31:39know I just say in MMA that's not what I say this is every man you're a man they're a man in this
- 31:47when you go when you meet a guy for the first time it doesn't matter what the context is
- 31:51part of your mind is like how do I fuck him up like what do I do if we fight like what am I
- 31:55gonna do I'm gonna grab something over here I'm gonna club him in the face like this cork is
- 31:58going right in his eye I could like I like Josh I thought about that when I saw Josh today
- 32:03it's just been a while like what am I gonna do and with Joe Rogan yeah I can imagine scenarios where
- 32:09I take him out and it's not it's not like in the octagon where there are rules it's just like go
- 32:15for the testicles use that particular implement you think he would be he would be impeded by his
- 32:20reverence for rules yes and you would be he's training you would years of training like how do I
- 32:25crowd McGraw no three more names Vladimir Putin the Ayatollah Khmeray and Kim Jong-un
