- 0:00Speaker 1: I'll tell you I haven't been clean. When's the last
- 0:02Speaker 1: time you were clean shaven?
- 0:03Speaker 2: Dude?
- 0:04Speaker 3: So about three weeks ago, right before we went on
- 0:07Speaker 3: our trip to Africa, I was like, I'm going to
- 0:08Speaker 3: shave pretty good so I don't have to do it
- 0:10Speaker 3: while I'm over there.
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and uh, the.
- 0:12Speaker 3: Day before my kids left, Lily, my two year old,
- 0:15Speaker 3: was playing with my beard trimmer, and she was like
- 0:19Speaker 3: messing with all the different attachments. And I normally just
- 0:21Speaker 3: keep my own, like I have one guard that I
- 0:23Speaker 3: use and I never shave up, always shaved down, yep.
- 0:26Speaker 3: And so I went for it and I just started
- 0:28Speaker 3: right here and went down and I was like, oh no,
- 0:31Speaker 3: I think Lily had like changed the guard for like
- 0:34Speaker 3: one of the real small ones, and like, you know,
- 0:36Speaker 3: I just have a stripe on my face and so
- 0:39Speaker 3: you're not going to rock the strike. So I just
- 0:40Speaker 3: had to get all of it to go and I
- 0:42Speaker 3: FaceTime my wife.
- 0:43Speaker 2: She's like, what happened to you?
- 0:45Speaker 3: And I was just like, this is this is the
- 0:47Speaker 3: me you got at least for the next three days
- 0:49Speaker 3: until it starts to go back.
- 0:50Speaker 1: So I note the double standard is so messed up, dude.
- 0:54Speaker 1: Could you imagine if she went to like the salon
- 0:56Speaker 1: and your and your responsor was what happened?
- 0:59Speaker 4: What happened?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Hey, you look awesome, Like what did you do? I
- 1:03Speaker 2: love it?
- 1:04Speaker 4: It'd be over. You'd have a reason for a whole
- 1:06Speaker 4: new album. It would be over.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Listen, I got to ask you.
- 1:10Speaker 1: One of the biggest things that we get to do
- 1:12Speaker 1: as a company all year is the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
- 1:16Speaker 4: We're back in Vegas again this year.
- 1:18Speaker 1: What's the process on an artist on getting invited to
- 1:22Speaker 1: that and what does it mean for you to come
- 1:24Speaker 1: back again this year?
- 1:25Speaker 3: It's a huge honor, man, Like, you know, I think
- 1:27Speaker 3: to be invited to anything that is all genre, like
- 1:30Speaker 3: as a country artist is a huge deal.
- 1:32Speaker 2: You know.
- 1:32Speaker 3: I think I got to do it once like twenty
- 1:35Speaker 3: sixteen maybe, and so it's it's definitely been a minute.
- 1:38Speaker 3: But to be on that bill with that many, you know,
- 1:42Speaker 3: different types of artists is such a huge honor. And so,
- 1:45Speaker 3: you know, for us, I think that process sort of
- 1:47Speaker 3: looks like, hey, how do we make this set list
- 1:49Speaker 3: like the most banging thirty minutes that we got in
- 1:52Speaker 3: our tank? You know, because you're you're kind of playing
- 1:54Speaker 3: for people that some may know who you are, but
- 1:57Speaker 3: more than likely there's a lot of people that don't
- 1:58Speaker 3: know who you are. So it's a great opportunity to,
- 2:01Speaker 3: you know, make new fans, meet some artists that you
- 2:03Speaker 3: might be able to collab with one day, and it's
- 2:05Speaker 3: just it's a huge It's a huge deal for me
- 2:07Speaker 3: in my camp for sure. We're and for it being Vegas. Dude,
- 2:10Speaker 3: I love Vegas at least for forty eight hours, and
- 2:14Speaker 3: so to be there, getting to do that, get to
- 2:15Speaker 3: play some craps at the same time, you get to
- 2:17Speaker 3: play some golf, it it'll be it'll be a great weekend.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So as fans from all around the globe get ready
- 2:23Speaker 1: to party on music's honestly one of music's biggest forty
- 2:26Speaker 1: eight hours as we take over the Team Obil Arena
- 2:29Speaker 1: thanks to Capital One two nights, one stage tr part
- 2:31Speaker 1: of this year's lineup. What is Thomas Reetz Vegas checklist?
- 2:35Speaker 1: As you're getting ready to go, what are things that
- 2:37Speaker 1: you have to be prepared for and things you want
- 2:39Speaker 1: to hit when you're there?
- 2:41Speaker 3: Man, I gotta play golf. Like golf in Vegas is
- 2:47Speaker 3: absolute top notch. I've never played Shadow Creek before. So
- 2:49Speaker 3: I'm gonna try to play Shadow Creek at the MGM.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Gott gotta go roll some dice with my wife, Like
- 2:56Speaker 3: I lose money unless my wife is at the table,
- 2:58Speaker 3: if she's like the luckiest human alive.
- 2:59Speaker 2: So roll some dice. Gotta eat some good sushi.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Uh. There's a place at the Mandalay Bay called Kumi,
- 3:06Speaker 3: and it's kind of become like a a tradition for
- 3:09Speaker 3: me and my band to go eat at Kumi.
- 3:12Speaker 2: But yeah, dude, I love being in Vegas.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Man.
- 3:14Speaker 3: It's it's it's just there's kind of a never ending
- 3:16Speaker 3: list of things to do. I've actually never gotten to
- 3:18Speaker 3: see the Spear either. So I'm gonna go at least
- 3:21Speaker 3: get my picture in front of the sphere and and uh,
- 3:24Speaker 3: yeah dude, it's it's going to be a blast.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Hey.
- 3:26Speaker 1: So the whole reason it sounds like this list, the
- 3:28Speaker 1: whole reason tr committed to the iHeart Radio Music Festival
- 3:31Speaker 1: this year is because you.
- 3:31Speaker 4: Had Vegas stuff to catch up on. Because it's been
- 3:34Speaker 4: a minute.
- 3:35Speaker 1: Yeah, hey, side note, Kumi has have you had the
- 3:40Speaker 1: tuna pizza?
- 3:40Speaker 2: There? No?
- 3:43Speaker 3: My favorite one is the pop rock Have you had
- 3:46Speaker 3: that one? It's like this sushi with pop.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Rocks in it. It's unbelievable.
- 3:49Speaker 4: It's so good.
- 3:50Speaker 1: Uh when it comes to uh, the iHeart Radio Music
- 3:53Speaker 1: Festival and you're building You're a guy who does shows
- 3:57Speaker 1: of all sizes around the globe. But when it comes
- 3:59Speaker 1: to the iHeart read you a music festival, knowing that
- 4:01Speaker 1: you mentioned some people maybe hearing your name and your
- 4:04Speaker 1: music for the first time, versus people that are buying
- 4:07Speaker 1: a ticket just to see you for sure, how do
- 4:09Speaker 1: you put together a set list to make both those
- 4:11Speaker 1: people happy?
- 4:13Speaker 3: Bangers bangers only like that. I think that's kind of
- 4:17Speaker 3: been my motto this year.
- 4:18Speaker 4: Man.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It's like I kind of have this new hunger inside
- 4:22Speaker 3: of me, which I you know, I think kind of
- 4:23Speaker 3: started in like twenty fifteen. It's like, you know, back
- 4:26Speaker 3: in the day when you had no hits and you're
- 4:28Speaker 3: walking out there into a festival where nobody.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Knows who you are.
- 4:30Speaker 3: It's like, how do you get these people on their feet?
- 4:33Speaker 3: How do you get them moving you? How do you
- 4:34Speaker 3: get them to want to buy a ticket the next
- 4:35Speaker 3: time you come to town?
- 4:36Speaker 2: You know?
- 4:37Speaker 3: So I think for this in particular thing. You know,
- 4:39Speaker 3: I've been doing this for fifteen years now, which is crazy.
- 4:42Speaker 3: So I'm sure at least most of the people in
- 4:44Speaker 3: that room have heard us song or two of mine.
- 4:46Speaker 3: But to be able to like give them some some
- 4:48Speaker 3: of my new record and also give them some hits,
- 4:50Speaker 3: I think it'll be a blast. Hopefully I can convince
- 4:53Speaker 3: du Aalipa to come up there and sing one with
- 4:54Speaker 3: me too, that that wouldn't suck. But I think you
- 4:58Speaker 3: just got to You got to just give them for
- 5:00Speaker 3: For me and my band, we just want to bring
- 5:01Speaker 3: as much energy as possible and get people moving.
- 5:04Speaker 1: So let's say you get on a call with Ihier
- 5:08Speaker 1: Rate and they're like, hey, tr you're gonna help us
- 5:10Speaker 1: sell tickets this year. Tell people why they can't miss
- 5:13Speaker 1: the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
- 5:15Speaker 3: Dude, I just don't know where you're gonna get this many,
- 5:19Speaker 3: this many stars like in this. And I'm not even
- 5:21Speaker 3: calling myself that, I'm just saying, like with the entire lineup, Like,
- 5:24Speaker 3: I don't know there's many places where you're gonna get
- 5:25Speaker 3: a two day festival of this many types of music
- 5:29Speaker 3: packed in forty eight hours. So I think if you're
- 5:32Speaker 3: just like a music lover in general, like I would
- 5:36Speaker 3: if this were me, and I lived in Vegas and
- 5:37Speaker 3: I was just a fan, or if I didn't live
- 5:39Speaker 3: in Vegas and I saw this happening, I would be like,
- 5:41Speaker 3: that's that's a two day experience that I need to
- 5:43Speaker 3: go see because I feel like my ears are just
- 5:45Speaker 3: gonna be open to all kinds of different sounds and
- 5:47Speaker 3: people and and uh yeah, they're just two days of
- 5:50Speaker 3: like music from all all over the all over the globe.
- 5:53Speaker 1: So plus, if you buy your tickets now, Sushi's on
- 5:56Speaker 1: tr and this crew.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Uh maximum two people though, yeah you.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Go first two people that buy now, Ope it's sold out.
- 6:05Speaker 1: You are getting ready to put out a brand new
- 6:07Speaker 1: album at this point, is it still an exciting I
- 6:11Speaker 1: don't want to say it's not an exciting process, but
- 6:13Speaker 1: like putting out your first album or two versus where
- 6:16Speaker 1: you are now, probably way different feeling pressure.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Wise, right, It's it is, But it's not like it's
- 6:23Speaker 3: not in the fact that like there's so many people
- 6:25Speaker 3: out there that know who I am and and our
- 6:27Speaker 3: fans who are going are going to listen to the
- 6:30Speaker 3: music because they're they're a fan of me and a
- 6:31Speaker 3: fan of my family. But I don't know, like I
- 6:34Speaker 3: said earlier, I've got a different drive today. Like, you know,
- 6:36Speaker 3: I think over the last five years I have I've
- 6:39Speaker 3: been excited, but I've also just been so dag im busy,
- 6:44Speaker 3: you know what I mean. So I think when I
- 6:45Speaker 3: go on the road and do shows, I come home
- 6:48Speaker 3: and I'm immediately into you know, my dad and husband duties,
- 6:52Speaker 3: and so there hasn't been a really big like work
- 6:55Speaker 3: life balance, if you will. And so now that my
- 6:57Speaker 3: kids a little bit older, dude, like I get to
- 6:59Speaker 3: come home and get to actually play with my kids
- 7:01Speaker 3: and hang out with my kids, and go to dinner
- 7:03Speaker 3: with my kids, and you know, see movies with my kids,
- 7:05Speaker 3: and so I have more time to kind of like
- 7:08Speaker 3: relax and like kind of rejuvenate.
- 7:10Speaker 2: And so this record process was no different.
- 7:12Speaker 4: Dude.
- 7:13Speaker 3: It's kind of the most time I've ever had to
- 7:14Speaker 3: make a record, and honestly the most fun I've ever
- 7:17Speaker 3: had making a record because I feel like there was
- 7:18Speaker 3: just no pressure and so me and my producers man
- 7:21Speaker 3: just kind of you know, would go on writing retreats
- 7:23Speaker 3: and get in the studio and just feel like what
- 7:26Speaker 3: feels fun to us, like what brings joy to our
- 7:28Speaker 3: souls and let's put that on the record. You know
- 7:31Speaker 3: my band and I is motto every time we walk
- 7:32Speaker 3: out on stage is like, how do we bring joy
- 7:34Speaker 3: to the people tonight?
- 7:35Speaker 2: Because that is our job?
- 7:36Speaker 3: And I've never felt that so deep in my core
- 7:39Speaker 3: like I do this year. So I think the next
- 7:42Speaker 3: five years of my career are going to be some
- 7:43Speaker 3: of the most fun that I've ever gotten to have.
- 7:46Speaker 1: This is your seventh studio album, So let's say we
- 7:49Speaker 1: hop in a time machine the I'm not gonna use
- 7:53Speaker 1: age or years as a reference, but yeah, the Thomas
- 7:56Speaker 1: rhet we have today who is wiser and more experienced.
- 7:59Speaker 1: What would you go back and tell that young kid
- 8:02Speaker 1: putting on his first album, like, Hey, you're worried about this,
- 8:04Speaker 1: this and this, and I promise you it does not matter.
- 8:08Speaker 2: Man.
- 8:09Speaker 3: I think I've always been a person that really cares about,
- 8:12Speaker 3: you know, what other people think, you know, like whether
- 8:16Speaker 3: that's somebody in the crowd that's having a miserable time
- 8:20Speaker 3: or you know, your random critic on social media. It's
- 8:24Speaker 3: always gotten really under my skin. And I think when
- 8:27Speaker 3: I turned thirty, I was just like, why have I
- 8:30Speaker 3: wasted so much energy on that? You know, because I
- 8:32Speaker 3: feel like I spent from twenty four to thirty, just
- 8:34Speaker 3: like immediately after a show, just scrolling, just trying to
- 8:38Speaker 3: find the worst comments about my show or the worst
- 8:42Speaker 3: comments about my music, And every now and then I'll
- 8:44Speaker 3: have something clever to say back to somebody.
- 8:46Speaker 2: But I think, like, as.
- 8:47Speaker 3: A thirty four year old dude, I'm like, I got
- 8:49Speaker 3: I got bigger fish to fry than worrying about what
- 8:52Speaker 3: somebody thinks about me or not liking a song. And
- 8:55Speaker 3: so I think if I could go back into my
- 8:56Speaker 3: twenty four year old body, I would just ask that
- 8:58Speaker 3: guy to just relax. Just go dude, you're making music
- 9:01Speaker 3: for a living, like freaking enjoy it.
- 9:03Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 9:05Speaker 1: What did you learn from that first album all the
- 9:07Speaker 1: way up to now that helps you be more confident
- 9:11Speaker 1: in the product you're about to put out? The album
- 9:14Speaker 1: is about a woman coming out in August.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Here.
- 9:17Speaker 3: What makes more confident? I think, just so many years
- 9:22Speaker 3: under my belt, you know what I mean. It's not
- 9:25Speaker 3: a huge like guessing game anymore. Like I know what
- 9:29Speaker 3: my lane is, and I know which ways I can
- 9:31Speaker 3: stretch and which ways I can push. And I think
- 9:35Speaker 3: that when I have pushed, I've seen it be you know,
- 9:38Speaker 3: accepted by you know, for sure of my fans. And
- 9:40Speaker 3: so a lot of this record do was kind of
- 9:43Speaker 3: getting back to like what got me here in the
- 9:45Speaker 3: first place, and that was just kind of taking some
- 9:47Speaker 3: chances and you know, trying some I always love to
- 9:50Speaker 3: try things I've never done before. Like every record, I
- 9:53Speaker 3: feel like all I start always starts off with a
- 9:55Speaker 3: song that is just sonically like pushing the boundary for
- 9:58Speaker 3: what I've done in the past. And and I think, man,
- 10:00Speaker 3: for me, like I just love to have fun. Like
- 10:02Speaker 3: if you've been to one of my shows, it's they're
- 10:05Speaker 3: just joyful, you know what I mean.
- 10:06Speaker 2: There's no other way I can say that.
- 10:07Speaker 3: And so if I can make joyful music to keep
- 10:10Speaker 3: adding to the joy of our show, then I feel
- 10:12Speaker 3: like my mission has been accomplished.
- 10:15Speaker 1: When you look at the fourteen songs you put on here,
- 10:17Speaker 1: which is a weird number to me because I feel
- 10:20Speaker 1: like it's either a thousand songs on an album or
- 10:24Speaker 1: it's like six yeah, or like six to eleven. So
- 10:28Speaker 1: why did fourteen make sense for you? Because if I
- 10:31Speaker 1: had to guess, you probably added a couple of spots
- 10:35Speaker 1: I did.
- 10:37Speaker 3: Okay, you know, I think there was a part of
- 10:39Speaker 3: me that kind of wanted to keep up, you know,
- 10:42Speaker 3: with the trend of you know, Morgan putting thirty six
- 10:46Speaker 3: songs on a record, Luke putting thirty songs on a record.
- 10:49Speaker 3: And I think that's great for those guys because they
- 10:52Speaker 3: stream their faces off. But for me, like I grew
- 10:54Speaker 3: up in a in a radio generation, you know what
- 10:57Speaker 3: I'm saying, Like the radio made me kind of who
- 10:58Speaker 3: I am today. And so my producer and I sort
- 11:02Speaker 3: of played this game along the way where he was like, Hey,
- 11:05Speaker 3: we have fifty songs here. We're not putting fifty songs out,
- 11:09Speaker 3: so let's make it. Let's make a ten song album.
- 11:12Speaker 3: And I was like that's impossible, and he was like,
- 11:13Speaker 3: I know, but just for the sake of this game,
- 11:16Speaker 3: let's just keep making a new ten song record every week.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Let's take songs off, put songs on, and we finally
- 11:22Speaker 3: landed on ten. I was just like, dude, I can't
- 11:24Speaker 3: put ten songs on a record. This is just not
- 11:26Speaker 3: like there's three. There's at least three more that I
- 11:28Speaker 3: have to have on here. And do we just live
- 11:31Speaker 3: in a generation where there's like five thousand songs that
- 11:35Speaker 3: come out every dag on Friday, you know what I mean?
- 11:38Speaker 2: And even for me as.
- 11:39Speaker 3: A music lover, when I when I get on my
- 11:40Speaker 3: phone and I'm like, oh, so and So's got a
- 11:43Speaker 3: new EP and so and So's got like I don't.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I don't even have the capacity to listen to all
- 11:48Speaker 3: the new music that I want to listen to. And
- 11:49Speaker 3: so for me, I was like, man in a world
- 11:51Speaker 3: full of content, content, content, song song songs like, how
- 11:56Speaker 3: do we make a record that looks like when you
- 11:58Speaker 3: look at it on your phone?
- 11:59Speaker 2: How does it? How does it look the most digestible?
- 12:02Speaker 2: I guess?
- 12:03Speaker 3: And fourteen seem pretty digestible to me. So that's kind
- 12:07Speaker 3: of how we landed on that.
- 12:08Speaker 1: So I obviously have to ask the obvious question. You
- 12:11Speaker 1: added some spots, what songs had to make? Obviously it
- 12:15Speaker 1: was done right, so these had to be there, But
- 12:17Speaker 1: what are the ones that you're like, this album done
- 12:19Speaker 1: unless it includes you know, this, this, this.
- 12:24Speaker 3: Well, So about three weeks before the record had to
- 12:27Speaker 3: be turned in, I still couldn't even land on fourteen.
- 12:29Speaker 2: I landed on like nineteen, and my.
- 12:32Speaker 3: Producer was like, dude, if you will just like take
- 12:36Speaker 3: six of these and hold on to them. Then after
- 12:39Speaker 3: your album is done and run its course, you got
- 12:42Speaker 3: like six more heaters to be able to put out
- 12:45Speaker 3: there rather than trying to like scramble to just put
- 12:50Speaker 3: a new song out there. So that was the hardest
- 12:52Speaker 3: part to me. So like, I kept six back that
- 12:54Speaker 3: I wanted on the record to be able to drop them,
- 12:56Speaker 3: you know, strategically after the album is done. But there
- 13:00Speaker 3: were two songs in particular that, you know, because it
- 13:02Speaker 3: was going to be a twelve song record, and so
- 13:04Speaker 3: I added this song called what Could Go Right? And
- 13:06Speaker 3: I added this song called Boots because the record just
- 13:08Speaker 3: didn't seem round it out to me without those two.
- 13:11Speaker 3: So yeah, man, my goal is like over the next
- 13:14Speaker 3: two years to not go six months without something new
- 13:18Speaker 3: so that I can continue to do my twenty twenty
- 13:21Speaker 3: five and twenty twenty six tour with momentum. So this
- 13:26Speaker 3: is the most like, you know, I don't even know
- 13:28Speaker 3: what I'm doing. I'm just listening to people smarter than
- 13:31Speaker 3: me and all hoping that it translates.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So that leads into what I want to ask next. Dude,
- 13:36Speaker 1: you have made money, you have sold out shows, You've
- 13:40Speaker 1: put out successful albums. You got a stack of plaques,
- 13:43Speaker 1: you know, with number one and sales success. So when
- 13:47Speaker 1: you say, hey, here's my nineteen, is any part of
- 13:51Speaker 1: you when you get pushed back from somebody. I mean,
- 13:54Speaker 1: you're the boss at the end of the day, right
- 13:55Speaker 1: or so what makes you not go no, this is
- 13:58Speaker 1: what I want to do. So this is what we're
- 13:59Speaker 1: going to do.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Man.
- 14:02Speaker 3: I think working with this guy, Julian Benetta, I've been
- 14:06Speaker 3: friends with him for a long time. But he he
- 14:08Speaker 3: produced like all the One Direction albums. He just produced
- 14:13Speaker 3: Sabrina Carpenter's new record. He just produced Teddy Swims's new record,
- 14:16Speaker 3: and so his pulse I think, for like global music
- 14:22Speaker 3: is just better than mine. To be honest with you,
- 14:26Speaker 3: and we have this thing that we do called the
- 14:28Speaker 3: Firing Squad, which me and him and like another guy
- 14:30Speaker 3: will just sit in a room and literally just bash
- 14:33Speaker 3: each other and we'll just play.
- 14:35Speaker 2: We'll just we'll dig into our phone.
- 14:37Speaker 3: We'll be like, check this song out and then like
- 14:38Speaker 3: Julian and know the psota and just be like you
- 14:41Speaker 3: know what I'm saying. Like it's the most honest musical
- 14:44Speaker 3: conversation that we can have. And I think when you
- 14:48Speaker 3: don't have those type of people in your life and
- 14:51Speaker 3: you only have yes people in your life, then at
- 14:54Speaker 3: the end of the day, you're only doing what you
- 14:56Speaker 3: want to do and you're not listening to like anyone else,
- 14:58Speaker 3: you know. So me and Julian went back and forth,
- 15:01Speaker 3: and me and Dan Huff went back and forth and
- 15:02Speaker 3: million times on the number of this album, the production
- 15:05Speaker 3: of songs, there were so many nights where Julian was like, dude,
- 15:08Speaker 3: the second verse of whatever is just not right. We
- 15:10Speaker 3: got to come back in and change it. I'm like, dude,
- 15:12Speaker 3: it's perfect. He's like, trust me, we should change it.
- 15:14Speaker 3: And we get back in there, spend six hours writing
- 15:17Speaker 3: against the new second verse, and all of a sudden
- 15:19Speaker 3: you're like, oh, that song will never be the same again,
- 15:22Speaker 3: because that second verse was so worth it. And so
- 15:24Speaker 3: I've never really worked like that. It's always just been like, oh,
- 15:27Speaker 3: that's the record, it's finished. And in this go around, man,
- 15:30Speaker 3: the record was sort of just like never finished until
- 15:32Speaker 3: it finally was. And so it's been the most frustrating
- 15:36Speaker 3: but also challenging project that I've ever made. And I
- 15:39Speaker 3: think doing this for fifteen years, dude, like if I'm
- 15:42Speaker 3: not challenged anymore, Like, what's the point of doing it.
- 15:45Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying.
- 15:47Speaker 3: This record like really made me like fall refall in
- 15:51Speaker 3: love with music again. And I've got I've got this
- 15:53Speaker 3: hunger inside of me that just just ready to go.
- 15:56Speaker 3: So I don't know, dude, I'm in a different headspace
- 15:59Speaker 3: today than I was, you know, eighteen years ago.
- 16:02Speaker 1: The new album comes out on the twenty third of August,
- 16:05Speaker 1: called About a Woman. I do want to ask you
- 16:07Speaker 1: brought up that the challenges that you had going into
- 16:11Speaker 1: this album. We caught up with Keith Thurman, I want
- 16:14Speaker 1: to say, like six seven months ago. He's another guy
- 16:16Speaker 1: that's going to be at the iHeartRadio Music Festival, and
- 16:18Speaker 1: he said he had a full album done, yeah, and
- 16:21Speaker 1: he turned it into the label. They brought him in
- 16:24Speaker 1: to play it for everybody, and he watched reactions around
- 16:27Speaker 1: the room and he goes just saying it. So we
- 16:30Speaker 1: pulled like two or three albums off. There are two
- 16:32Speaker 1: or three songs off there, junks the rest of it,
- 16:34Speaker 1: and moved on.
- 16:35Speaker 4: And he said he was honestly.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Probably the hardest thing of his entire career because he
- 16:40Speaker 1: felt like he wasted.
- 16:42Speaker 4: So obviously you don't feel that way.
- 16:44Speaker 1: This project is coming out to twenty third, everyone's gonna
- 16:46Speaker 1: be able to wrap their arms around the fourteen songs.
- 16:48Speaker 1: But is there a time Maybe recently now, because you're
- 16:51Speaker 1: more confident than you were at the beginning, where like
- 16:54Speaker 1: you had to take something that you were like passionate
- 16:56Speaker 1: about you thought was done good to go, and once
- 16:58Speaker 1: you kind of let other people water your plans, you realize, now,
- 17:02Speaker 1: this ain't it, dude.
- 17:04Speaker 3: So many times, I mean, there were there were songs
- 17:08Speaker 3: on this record that obviously aren't on this record anymore,
- 17:10Speaker 3: that I was so sure of, you know what I mean,
- 17:13Speaker 3: And then I would get the band on the bus
- 17:16Speaker 3: one night and I'd be like, yo, check this song
- 17:17Speaker 3: out we wrote last week, and you're kind of seeing
- 17:20Speaker 3: some head bobbing and you're seeing the thing and you finish,
- 17:22Speaker 3: and everybody's like, that's cool man, And I'm like, I
- 17:24Speaker 3: don't want it to be just cool man.
- 17:26Speaker 2: I want it. I want it.
- 17:27Speaker 3: I want you to either hate it so bad that
- 17:29Speaker 3: you have to tell me how bad you hate it,
- 17:32Speaker 3: or I want it to be the favorite, your favorite
- 17:35Speaker 3: Thomas Rhett song you've ever heard. Life's too short to
- 17:39Speaker 3: put out, you know, mediocre songs to me and it's like,
- 17:43Speaker 3: and it's fine if you hate it, but I either
- 17:45Speaker 3: want you to hate it or I want you to
- 17:46Speaker 3: love it. I think fine fine does not get anybody
- 17:50Speaker 3: anywhere anymore. And so there were definitely songs where I
- 17:54Speaker 3: was like so sure of this, because like, here's the.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Thing that fans will never have.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Fans will never have that moment in the writing room
- 18:02Speaker 3: of like finally landing on the hook of a chorus
- 18:05Speaker 3: or like finally finding that melody that works for a
- 18:08Speaker 3: second verse. That's a feeling that only you and the
- 18:12Speaker 3: songwriters will ever have, and you can only hope that
- 18:15Speaker 3: when that song comes out, the fans feel some kind
- 18:17Speaker 3: of way that even comes close to matching that. So
- 18:21Speaker 3: when you're playing songs for other people, you're thinking that
- 18:23Speaker 3: they experienced the same feeling that you did while you
- 18:26Speaker 3: were writing it. But in reality, they had a bad
- 18:30Speaker 3: Monday and a bad Tuesday and they're just hearing a
- 18:32Speaker 3: random song on a Wednesday and they go, it doesn't
- 18:34Speaker 3: really hit me, bro, And you're like why, Like you
- 18:37Speaker 3: don't understand what we just did. You know what I'm saying,
- 18:41Speaker 3: And I think that's why I'm.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Making records is so hard, because art is subjective.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Like when you you know, if you're a painter and
- 18:48Speaker 3: you spend six months on a mural and then you
- 18:50Speaker 3: hang it up on the side of the road and
- 18:52Speaker 3: somebody goes, that's terrible. That's they're They're entitled to that opinion,
- 18:57Speaker 3: you know what I'm saying. But it doesn't it shouldn't
- 18:59Speaker 3: make you feel like it sucks because you were the
- 19:02Speaker 3: one that had the time to dive into that painting.
- 19:06Speaker 3: And it's the same with a song, dude. You spend
- 19:08Speaker 3: three weeks writing a song and you put it out
- 19:10Speaker 3: to the world. It is no longer up to you
- 19:13Speaker 3: like it is now up to the masses to decide
- 19:15Speaker 3: if they like it or not. That's what makes making
- 19:17Speaker 3: music so awesome and so frustrating, because not everybody likes
- 19:22Speaker 3: the same thing. You just kind of hope that a
- 19:24Speaker 3: lot of people end up liking what you put out.
- 19:26Speaker 3: So that was a really long way of answering your question.
- 19:29Speaker 1: Last thing I want to ask you, and I apologize,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I'm keeping you a couple of minutes later than I
- 19:32Speaker 1: told you I would. Good, So it's and this song
- 19:38Speaker 1: can be the same for you. But out of the
- 19:41Speaker 1: new album, the New Fourteenth songs, What was the toughest,
- 19:44Speaker 1: what song gave you the most difficulty, what song kind
- 19:47Speaker 1: of wrote itself, and which one is your heart tied
- 19:50Speaker 1: closest to.
- 19:54Speaker 3: I think my heart is tied closest to a song
- 19:56Speaker 3: called what Could Go Right for many reasons, but it
- 20:00Speaker 3: is like a verbatim story of the night that I
- 20:04Speaker 3: kind of told my wife that I was in love
- 20:06Speaker 3: with her. And I've tried to write that song a
- 20:09Speaker 3: million different ways and it just never really worked. And
- 20:11Speaker 3: it just happened that this group I was with, like
- 20:13Speaker 3: we'd really hit the nail on the head on that one.
- 20:15Speaker 3: So I think my heart was most attached to what
- 20:18Speaker 3: Could Go Right? And then, second of all, on that
- 20:20Speaker 3: same song probably the most difficult because the way that
- 20:24Speaker 3: the guy I wrote it with sang the demo I
- 20:26Speaker 3: had a really hard time copying because I don't have
- 20:29Speaker 3: a great falsett of voice and there was a lot
- 20:31Speaker 3: of falsett up movements in the chorus that my producer
- 20:35Speaker 3: was like, you should just sing it full of voice,
- 20:36Speaker 3: and I was like, I don't know that I can
- 20:37Speaker 3: sing that high. So we spent like four days in
- 20:39Speaker 3: the studio trying to figure out which version of this
- 20:41Speaker 3: and finally landed on one. So I think that was
- 20:44Speaker 3: probably the toughest one to sing vocally.
- 20:46Speaker 2: And then what was your third question?
- 20:48Speaker 1: It was what song wrote itself? Like once you sat down,
- 20:52Speaker 1: it just it fell into place, minimal effort.
- 20:55Speaker 2: I think the song that wrote itself would be the
- 20:57Speaker 2: last track on the record. It's called I Can Spend
- 20:58Speaker 2: Forever Loving You.
- 21:00Speaker 3: And it was actually the first time that I've ever
- 21:02Speaker 3: written with Ernest, And it was like a random, random
- 21:06Speaker 3: day in Nashville and me and Ernest, right, let's write
- 21:08Speaker 3: something that we think could be in a Yellowstone soundtrack,
- 21:12Speaker 3: and Ernest starts just playing this guitar lick and literally
- 21:16Speaker 3: the lines just kept falling in place, and before we
- 21:19Speaker 3: knew it, like forty five minutes later, the song was
- 21:21Speaker 3: done and the demo was done. That hardly ever happens,
- 21:24Speaker 3: but Ernest is such a great freestyler that like, if
- 21:29Speaker 3: you're lost, you just tell Ernest to start singing and
- 21:31Speaker 3: start saying things, and you're gonna find something that that's amazing.
- 21:34Speaker 4: So that's so awesome. Man, can't wait for the new album.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I apologize it took you a little bit longer, but
- 21:40Speaker 1: we can't wait to see it. Can't wait to see
- 21:42Speaker 1: in Vegas, dude, and you're on vacation right now.
- 21:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm at the beach with the with the fan.
- 21:46Speaker 1: So you're like, yeah, so if we could, Like, I'm.
- 21:50Speaker 4: Trying to get to that break.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It's a good break for me.
- 21:53Speaker 1: So dude, it's always great to catch up with you. Man,
- 21:56Speaker 1: I think the world is so thanks for hanging out, brother.
- 21:58Speaker 4: I appreciate it.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks so much. To have a good one.
- 22:00Speaker 4: You two see you soon. One see
