Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Is it just me or does it feel like democracy
- 0:02Speaker 1: is somewhat under threat or at risk? Just reading the
- 0:07Speaker 1: international news headlines day in, day out, it feels precarious.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Trump over the weekend, if you missed it, is saying that,
- 0:17Speaker 1: and he's probably joking. You know, you didn't never really
- 0:20Speaker 1: tell with Donald Trump, but suggesting that he might fix
- 0:23Speaker 1: the next election.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Listen, you won't have to do it anymore four more years,
- 0:28Speaker 2: you know what, It'll be fixed. It'll be fine. You
- 0:31Speaker 2: won't have to vote anymore. Of my beautiful Christians. I
- 0:34Speaker 2: love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you. Get out.
- 0:37Speaker 2: You gotta get out and vote. In four years, you
- 0:40Speaker 2: don't have to vote again. We'll have it fixed so good,
- 0:42Speaker 2: you're not gonna have to vote.
- 0:43Speaker 1: So there's Trump, and then you've got a barely functioning
- 0:47Speaker 1: Joe Biden and the White House. Are these the shining
- 0:51Speaker 1: beacons of democracy we can hold up as our post
- 0:53Speaker 1: to kids? I don't think so. And then there's if
- 0:57Speaker 1: you look apart from the Olympics in France, once the
- 1:00Speaker 1: election result there has left them basically in limbo. I mean,
- 1:03Speaker 1: who is actually running the government?
- 1:05Speaker 2: You know?
- 1:05Speaker 1: The Olympics is kind of the spectacle. That's a side show,
- 1:09Speaker 1: but really who's running the place? And there's such an
- 1:13Speaker 1: extreme spectrum from that vote that they had. You've had
- 1:16Speaker 1: Hungary's Victor Aorbarne at the weekend talking about nationalism. You
- 1:20Speaker 1: know his pertians mate. He says, there's a shift in
- 1:23Speaker 1: global power underway. In a few decades or centuries. He
- 1:26Speaker 1: reckons Asia will be the center of the world. The
- 1:28Speaker 1: future big powers China, India, Pakistan, Indonesia. The West has
- 1:33Speaker 1: pushed Russia towards this block of countries, he reckons. The
- 1:37Speaker 1: International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistants says half of
- 1:42Speaker 1: the world's countries are suffering democratic decline. They say things
- 1:47Speaker 1: like flawed elections and curtailed rights of freedom and assembly
- 1:51Speaker 1: and speech are reducing the power of democracy across the world.
- 1:58Speaker 1: And this is six concepts hit of years off the clients.
- 2:01Speaker 1: They say, So, I don't really know what the conclusion
- 2:04Speaker 1: of all that is, other than I suppose just keep
- 2:07Speaker 1: watching the Olympics and forget about it.
