- 0:01Speaker 2: Welcome back to Refresh. This is Jake Hoefer and this
- 0:04Speaker 2: week we are doing this a little bit from a
- 0:07Speaker 2: mobile studio. I'm just wrapping up a new Mexico ELK
- 0:09Speaker 2: trip and we have a great episode with a variety
- 0:12Speaker 2: of guests Ohio, Pennsylvania, Who's going to New Jersey? And
- 0:16Speaker 2: we have Mark Kenyon kicking off the episode. Before we
- 0:19Speaker 2: get into all the guests and all the intel, I
- 0:21Speaker 2: want to say that Refresh is brought to you by
- 0:23Speaker 2: land dot com, the leading online real estate marketplace you
- 0:26Speaker 2: find your perfect rural, recreational, agricultural, or hunting properties. Here
- 0:31Speaker 2: in the US. It's been hot, it's been a little
- 0:33Speaker 2: bit stagnant, but there's still been some big bucks that
- 0:35Speaker 2: have been shot. And we have a little bit of
- 0:37Speaker 2: a front moving throughout the country this week. And so
- 0:40Speaker 2: if you're excited and you want to go out and
- 0:42Speaker 2: make a play, you're going to get some great intel
- 0:44Speaker 2: from folks that either have already shot a buck or
- 0:46Speaker 2: developing a plan to hopefully connect with one. Let's go
- 0:49Speaker 2: ahead and kick things off with Mark Kenyon. Here we go,
- 0:57Speaker 2: all right, First up on the line, we have Mark
- 0:59Speaker 2: Kenyon and I'm still in my mobile recording studio here, Mark,
- 1:04Speaker 2: how's it going.
- 1:05Speaker 3: It's good, It's really good.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I guess I'm not as good as you coming off
- 1:09Speaker 1: of an incredible LK hunt, but I felt like I
- 1:12Speaker 1: was flying pretty high. The white tail season is kicked
- 1:15Speaker 1: off here in Michigan. I've had a fun start to it,
- 1:18Speaker 1: so I have no complaints. Well good, well, good. So
- 1:21Speaker 1: what constitutes a fun start? Well, I have been out
- 1:26Speaker 1: three times since the opener. So I went out the
- 1:29Speaker 1: first two nights, and then I took off two days,
- 1:31Speaker 1: and then I hunted again on Sunday. And two of
- 1:36Speaker 1: those hunts are on my own, like you know, really
- 1:38Speaker 1: getting after the buck I'm going after. And those were
- 1:41Speaker 1: good hunts. And then the last hunt was more of
- 1:43Speaker 1: a family hunt. I took my two sons they're five
- 1:46Speaker 1: and seven, out four hunt with me, and that was
- 1:50Speaker 1: an adventure of a different kind, but very fun, fun
- 1:54Speaker 1: to have them out there with me. So so yeah,
- 1:56Speaker 1: the uh, you know, the good times were had with
- 1:59Speaker 1: the kids. And I saw very good activity on the
- 2:02Speaker 1: first couple nights, which I can tell you about if
- 2:03Speaker 1: you want.
- 2:04Speaker 3: On those early October hunts, what.
- 2:06Speaker 2: Did you see the deer doing and let's hear a
- 2:08Speaker 2: little bit about your setup, because those are some of
- 2:10Speaker 2: the first swings of the year, so they're usually maybe
- 2:13Speaker 2: the most calculated.
- 2:14Speaker 1: Yeah, So you know what I did the first couple
- 2:17Speaker 1: nights of the year was hunt a place where I
- 2:21Speaker 1: had pretty darn good chances of seeing the deer I
- 2:24Speaker 1: was after, but it was actually a.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Low risk place to get into and to get out of.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And you know, given the fact it was the first
- 2:32Speaker 1: night of the season, if there was reason to be
- 2:35Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 2:35Speaker 3: More risky, I would have.
- 2:37Speaker 1: But actually my intel was showing me that the buck
- 2:39Speaker 1: I was after was coming out to this kind of
- 2:42Speaker 1: low risk spot in daylight still, so I thought, Man,
- 2:45Speaker 1: I don't need to do something crazy if he's coming
- 2:47Speaker 1: here already.
- 2:48Speaker 3: So I decided I'm gonna hunt.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I had a perfect wind for a rare easterly wind
- 2:53Speaker 1: for this zone. I was hunting a tiny green food
- 2:56Speaker 1: plot right on the edge of a betting area with
- 3:00Speaker 1: oaks dropping as well, so it was kind of like
- 3:02Speaker 1: dual food source that's in cover, surrounded by standing corn
- 3:06Speaker 1: and tall early successional habitat and then tight to his bedroom.
- 3:10Speaker 3: And that was a setup for those first couple.
- 3:13Speaker 1: Nights it was, you know, a little bit cooler than
- 3:16Speaker 1: previous for a lot of people.
- 3:17Speaker 3: He had like mid eighties.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And then October first and second came and we got
- 3:21Speaker 1: that slight drop in temperature down to.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Like the seventies. So I saw a decent bit of movement.
- 3:26Speaker 1: It was still pretty late the first night, but the
- 3:28Speaker 1: second night, so October second, you know, an hour and
- 3:32Speaker 1: a half or so before dark, I really started seeing
- 3:34Speaker 1: a lot of deer movement. And I saw seven different
- 3:38Speaker 1: bucks that night and maybe fifteen to twenty dos. A
- 3:42Speaker 1: couple things stand out to me as far as the
- 3:45Speaker 1: activity I've seen.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Number One, the bucks are.
- 3:48Speaker 1: Definitely feeling their oats like they're starting to just like
- 3:52Speaker 1: you know, get after just a tiny bit. And by
- 3:54Speaker 1: that I mean almost every time I saw multiple bucks
- 3:58Speaker 1: together they were there was almost always two of them sparring.
- 4:02Speaker 1: I've seen so much sparring, both in person on these
- 4:05Speaker 1: hunts and then also on my trial cameras. Lots and
- 4:08Speaker 1: lots of bucks just kind of locking up, lightly tickling times,
- 4:12Speaker 1: pushing each other back and forth, you know, nothing aggressive,
- 4:15Speaker 1: but just kind of saying, hey, how strong are you?
- 4:18Speaker 1: Here's how strong I am? You know, just kind of
- 4:21Speaker 1: getting a little bit of that angst out and that
- 4:24Speaker 1: got me thinking that, man, a great reminder that this
- 4:27Speaker 1: time of year, some very light rattling, some very light,
- 4:30Speaker 1: little kind of time tickling can be an effective way
- 4:33Speaker 1: to signal, hey, there's another buck over here.
- 4:36Speaker 3: You're curious, come on over again.
- 4:39Speaker 1: Nothing aggressive, but just that very light little tinkle tinkle
- 4:41Speaker 1: tick tick. That's what I was hearing a lot of
- 4:44Speaker 1: this week, and I think that's something that will probably
- 4:47Speaker 1: continue in the future.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Yeah, so were you able to lay eyes on your
- 4:52Speaker 2: target buck on those hunts where you saw you know,
- 4:54Speaker 2: twenty dos and seven different bucks.
- 4:56Speaker 1: I did not see my target buck. I did see
- 5:00Speaker 1: mostly year.
- 5:01Speaker 3: And a half folds.
- 5:01Speaker 1: I saw several two and a half folds, and I
- 5:04Speaker 1: saw one three and a half. Now I will tell
- 5:07Speaker 1: you that I do have daylight pictures of my target buck.
- 5:13Speaker 3: He showed up at another food.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Plot of mine that I was not at on the
- 5:17Speaker 1: first night, like two minutes after dark. So he was,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you know, in daylight opening night, about two hundred yards
- 5:24Speaker 1: away from me.
- 5:25Speaker 3: And then he has.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Been moving in the morning in daylight three different times
- 5:30Speaker 1: this week. So the unfortunate issue has been that I
- 5:35Speaker 1: can't get into hunt this zone with the winds we've
- 5:38Speaker 1: had and kind of the food set up, just like
- 5:42Speaker 1: the property layout, to get in there and try to
- 5:44Speaker 1: hunt a morning without blowing things up. So I'm on
- 5:46Speaker 1: the fence about maybe I should try something with this
- 5:48Speaker 1: cold front coming up this next week. Maybe there's a
- 5:50Speaker 1: way with the wind we've got coming in that I
- 5:52Speaker 1: might be able to pull off a morning hunt because
- 5:54Speaker 1: he's definitely he's been moving that last hour of daylight
- 5:58Speaker 1: in the morning, So that's a possile stability, but I'm
- 6:01Speaker 1: sure we'll get to it. But with this weather coming in,
- 6:03Speaker 1: I think there's you know, going to be several different opportunities.
- 6:07Speaker 2: Yeah, so we can jump right into the weather because
- 6:09Speaker 2: I think that you know, it's been elevated attempts here
- 6:12Speaker 2: above average temperatures. You know, across the board throughout the country.
- 6:16Speaker 2: It looks like there's a weather front rolling in Monday
- 6:18Speaker 2: or Tuesday. So with this list, people are listening to
- 6:20Speaker 2: this on Wednesday, you know, there's a lot of people
- 6:23Speaker 2: that really like hunting. Obviously, a front after a pretty
- 6:26Speaker 2: good rainstorm, like creating a pretty good storm for opportunity.
- 6:31Speaker 2: With all that in mind, are you seeing that weather
- 6:33Speaker 2: in your forecast, and that's what's kind of helping you
- 6:36Speaker 2: shape your plan.
- 6:37Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, it's gonna be a little bit
- 6:40Speaker 1: different for everyone depending on where they are in the country.
- 6:42Speaker 1: So for me in Michigan, the front is hitting Tuesday,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and then we have that cool weather Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 6:50Speaker 1: and then it heats back up Friday. You're east of me,
- 6:53Speaker 1: so if you're on the East coast, you might not
- 6:54Speaker 1: be getting that cold front till Wednesday. You might have
- 6:56Speaker 1: a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday front. So you know, if you're
- 6:59Speaker 1: listening right now, I'm sure you're all checking your own weather.
- 7:02Speaker 1: So I don't need to tell you to do this,
- 7:03Speaker 1: but think about what I'm telling you and what the
- 7:07Speaker 1: other people are telling you today in relation to that.
- 7:10Speaker 1: You know, somebody might say, well, Monday is going to
- 7:11Speaker 1: be the best day, but that might be because they
- 7:13Speaker 1: are in Minnesota, but actually their Monday might be what
- 7:17Speaker 1: you will have on your Wednesday or whatever it might be.
- 7:20Speaker 1: So keep that in mind. So we've got this big
- 7:22Speaker 1: front coming through. As you mentioned, rain's going to come
- 7:25Speaker 1: in for me on Tuesday. Temperature is going to drop
- 7:28Speaker 1: about twenty degrees for the highs it'll be like mid
- 7:31Speaker 1: eighties today, it's going to be mid to low sixties.
- 7:34Speaker 1: It's a high tomorrow, and then the low temperatures are
- 7:36Speaker 1: going to drop all the way into the thirties by Thursday,
- 7:39Speaker 1: with like a frost warning on Thursday. So because of that,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and because i also am looking at my extended forecast
- 7:46Speaker 1: and I'm seeing that this is the only three day
- 7:48Speaker 1: window like this, This is the only nice front at
- 7:50Speaker 1: least for my zone. It goes right back up to
- 7:53Speaker 1: kind of warm and stable weather for the next fourteen
- 7:56Speaker 1: days after that. So I'm looking at this as like, hey,
- 7:59Speaker 1: this is like mine, this is my mid October front.
- 8:02Speaker 1: This is gonna be the shot, and then it's probably
- 8:04Speaker 1: gonna be late October until we get the next you know,
- 8:08Speaker 1: change in weather patterns that might trigger a little bit
- 8:10Speaker 1: of extra movement. So I'm I'm gonna be a little
- 8:12Speaker 1: bit more aggressive here and look at this as like
- 8:14Speaker 1: this is one of my big swings, and then it's
- 8:16Speaker 1: gonna be I'm actually taking off next week for a
- 8:18Speaker 1: different trip somewhere, so I'm not gonna hunt my Michigan
- 8:21Speaker 1: spots anyways. So all that said, I am in the
- 8:24Speaker 1: process right now of deciding where the best opportunities would
- 8:28Speaker 1: be to take a serious swing at this buck. So
- 8:31Speaker 1: I'm gonna, you know, maybe get tight tight in the
- 8:34Speaker 1: cover right on some oaks that are adjacent to his bedroom.
- 8:37Speaker 3: That's one idea I've had.
- 8:39Speaker 1: I'm debating do I want to do like one more
- 8:42Speaker 1: kind of like pseudo safe but still in the game
- 8:46Speaker 1: hunt and if that doesn't work out, then the second
- 8:48Speaker 1: day do the big swing.
- 8:50Speaker 3: Those are the things I'm thinking about. But the two
- 8:52Speaker 3: options would be, you.
- 8:54Speaker 1: Know, either hunting in the oaks right adjacent to his
- 8:58Speaker 1: bedroom or just one layer back from that, closer to
- 9:02Speaker 1: the food sources in between, well the planted food sources,
- 9:06Speaker 1: so I can be in a transition between food and bed,
- 9:08Speaker 1: or I can be tight to the bed. In particular,
- 9:11Speaker 1: there's one spot where this buck is beded a lot. Now,
- 9:14Speaker 1: I these bucks bed in you know, multiple locations, so
- 9:16Speaker 1: you never know exactly where they're gonna be, but I
- 9:18Speaker 1: know that this one, you know, several acres zone is
- 9:21Speaker 1: a spot that he spent a lot of time in
- 9:23Speaker 1: the past. There's a big scrape right on the edge
- 9:26Speaker 1: of it that he's hit a ton over the last
- 9:28Speaker 1: couple of years. That I have a tree prepped pretty
- 9:31Speaker 1: close to it that I can get to. It's just
- 9:33Speaker 1: a tough spot to get into if it's you know,
- 9:36Speaker 1: if it's super dry and still, you're gonna bump deer
- 9:39Speaker 1: getting in there. But if it's wet from rain in
- 9:42Speaker 1: the morning and there's some breeze, I could probably get there.
- 9:45Speaker 1: So that might be what I do for me. Tuesday
- 9:48Speaker 1: could be the wet, windy day. It might be worth
- 9:50Speaker 1: getting in there. So I'm I'm weighing those cost benefits
- 9:53Speaker 1: right now.
- 9:54Speaker 3: Mm hmm.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it's crazy that this might be one of
- 9:59Speaker 2: the better opportunities here in October. Obviously the weather can change.
- 10:04Speaker 2: And the other benefit to this time of year too
- 10:06Speaker 2: that no one's mentioned yet, but we haven't had daylight
- 10:10Speaker 2: savings time. So if you get off work a little
- 10:11Speaker 2: bit early, this is potentially an opportunity to sneak out
- 10:15Speaker 2: the stand after work. Maybe jet out of work a
- 10:17Speaker 2: little bit early. Because it's gonna be super stagnant for
- 10:20Speaker 2: fourteen days. You're probably gonna wish you at least went
- 10:23Speaker 2: out and took a swing.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, that's that's what I'm looking at. I'm
- 10:27Speaker 1: just not seeing a lot of that. You know, those
- 10:30Speaker 1: changes and changes on a dynamic forecast is often going
- 10:34Speaker 1: to lead to dynamic movement stability, you know, like like
- 10:37Speaker 1: a monoculture. This is everything right, Like a monoculture of
- 10:41Speaker 1: habitat usually not great. A monoculture of weather forecast not ideal.
- 10:45Speaker 1: Not that they're not going to move, but you're just
- 10:47Speaker 1: going to have things kind of stagnate a little bit.
- 10:50Speaker 1: So I like the fact that, hey, here's an opportunity
- 10:53Speaker 1: where things are shifting up big time. It's going to
- 10:55Speaker 1: lead to some kind of shift with a deer. Might
- 10:57Speaker 1: as well take a swing of swing for and worst scenario,
- 11:00Speaker 1: it doesn't work out, and then you still have several
- 11:02Speaker 1: weeks until late October when a lot of us are
- 11:05Speaker 1: gonna get really serious anyway. So it's it's kind of
- 11:08Speaker 1: a low risk situation this point as far as I'm concerned.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Yeah. So, I mean, with all that being said, we
- 11:15Speaker 2: got to put a scale one to ten on it.
- 11:16Speaker 2: Where do you think the next seven a's are going
- 11:18Speaker 2: to fall? And we'll say eight for you, will include Tuesday.
- 11:21Speaker 2: I didn't do that for anyone else, but we'll throw
- 11:23Speaker 2: that in here for you. So two day, the following Wednesday.
- 11:26Speaker 1: So if you're gonna let me include the day before
- 11:29Speaker 1: people are listening that, I'm gonna give this like a
- 11:31Speaker 1: like a.
- 11:33Speaker 3: Like a seven.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Like I think it's pretty good, I mean pretty darn
- 11:37Speaker 1: good for like a mid October ish time period. It's,
- 11:42Speaker 1: like I said, it's worth a swing. I don't think
- 11:44Speaker 1: it's going to be the same that on October twenty seventh,
- 11:49Speaker 1: twenty degree cold front would be, but I think that
- 11:52Speaker 1: there will be deer moving. I think that having a
- 11:55Speaker 1: little bit of rain and wind and switching things up
- 11:58Speaker 1: is going to be really nice, not just forgetting deer moving,
- 12:00Speaker 1: but also allowing us that access. It's been so dry here,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I know that's been the case over so many parts
- 12:05Speaker 1: of the country. Finally getting a little bit of moisture,
- 12:09Speaker 1: some wet leaves, that's going to give you a chance
- 12:11Speaker 1: to do something that maybe you couldn't do over the
- 12:13Speaker 1: last week because it's so still, so loud. This is
- 12:17Speaker 1: a chance to take advantage of those things. So I'm
- 12:19Speaker 1: giving you a solid seven. I'm very excited about these
- 12:22Speaker 1: next three days. I'm I'm planning on hunting Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday,
- 12:25Speaker 1: and then probably pull back a little bit be more conservative,
- 12:29Speaker 1: go out to some safe spots with the kids where
- 12:31Speaker 1: I'm just trying to, you know, show them a good time,
- 12:32Speaker 1: or see some doughs or shoot a dough But I'm
- 12:35Speaker 1: looking forward to Yeah.
- 12:37Speaker 2: One last question for anyone that is not they're looking
- 12:39Speaker 2: at this weather front, they're hearing, man, I should be
- 12:41Speaker 2: pretty excited. I should go take a swing. They're also
- 12:45Speaker 2: the person that says, man, I just haven't had any
- 12:47Speaker 2: deer show up yet, or I'm still waiting on a buck,
- 12:49Speaker 2: or I'm still waiting on one to show up. What
- 12:50Speaker 2: would you be your suggestion or of one piece of
- 12:52Speaker 2: advice for them to take somewhat of advantage of this opportunity,
- 12:56Speaker 2: even though they don't feel like they're ready to make
- 12:59Speaker 2: a calculate choice and they're just kind of going with
- 13:02Speaker 2: the flow at the moment.
- 13:03Speaker 1: So I think I would say if I did not
- 13:05Speaker 1: have any you know, if I didn't have a deer
- 13:08Speaker 1: I was after, or feel confident that there was some
- 13:10Speaker 1: bucks in the air that I wanted to hunt now
- 13:12Speaker 1: and I kind of hadn't dial to some degree, I
- 13:14Speaker 1: wouldn't take a big swing. I wouldn't be taking like
- 13:17Speaker 1: an early to mid October big swing even with this front,
- 13:21Speaker 1: unless I was doing it in a calculated way. If
- 13:24Speaker 1: I'm in search mode right now, I would still hunt,
- 13:26Speaker 1: of course, but I would probably be hunting somewhere. That's
- 13:29Speaker 1: you know, number one, going to give me opportunities to learn.
- 13:32Speaker 1: That's probably the biggest thing. I would be in search mode,
- 13:34Speaker 1: in observation mode, in scout mode. So hunt observation stands,
- 13:38Speaker 1: hunt places where you can see along ways. If you
- 13:41Speaker 1: have rain or wind, you might want to take advantage
- 13:44Speaker 1: of that to do some scouting actually on the ground
- 13:46Speaker 1: right now. This especially given the fact that we haven't
- 13:48Speaker 1: been able to do that quietly for several weeks because
- 13:51Speaker 1: of how I mean, it's just so crunchy out there
- 13:53Speaker 1: right now. If we finally get rain, what a great
- 13:56Speaker 1: opportunity to go check some stuff out quietly. Of course,
- 14:00Speaker 1: be careful about wind, still be smart about it, but
- 14:03Speaker 1: you can go cover some ground real quick. Take an
- 14:05Speaker 1: afternoon and say, you know what, I'm not gonna hunt tonight.
- 14:07Speaker 1: I'm just gonna scout the heck guy this place. Try
- 14:09Speaker 1: to find a concentration of bucks sign. You know, I
- 14:12Speaker 1: have seen a lot of big rubs already. I've been
- 14:15Speaker 1: seeing bucks really starting to rub in my zone and
- 14:18Speaker 1: some pretty decent sized ones, so that starting scraping is
- 14:22Speaker 1: obviously starting. I'm seeing, you know, the target buck I've
- 14:25Speaker 1: been after has been visiting scrapes relatively frequently. So now
- 14:28Speaker 1: is a great time to get out there. If you
- 14:30Speaker 1: don't already have this intel, take advantage of this moment,
- 14:33Speaker 1: this opportunity to go find that try to find a
- 14:35Speaker 1: buck or several bucks, or concentration of activity that then
- 14:39Speaker 1: you can hunt in a more calculated way next time
- 14:42Speaker 1: you have the day off, or next time the wind
- 14:44Speaker 1: and the weather.
- 14:44Speaker 3: Looks a little better.
- 14:46Speaker 1: So I would say there's plenty of things you can
- 14:50Speaker 1: do now even if you don't have something picked out
- 14:52Speaker 1: that's chasing wonderful.
- 14:54Speaker 2: Well, we have a Jeeven Mullet who shot an awesome
- 14:57Speaker 2: Ohio buck. We have Zach Kaim who shot at to
- 15:00Speaker 2: get a couple of Ohio guys because I know there's
- 15:01Speaker 2: a lot of people that have major heartache there, so
- 15:04Speaker 2: I wanted to bring in a couple of Ohio success stories.
- 15:06Speaker 2: And then we have Aaron Hepler from Pennsylvania who opened
- 15:09Speaker 2: the Hunted That opener in Pennsylvania and is headed to
- 15:12Speaker 2: New Jersey. So we have an exciting episode. I hope
- 15:14Speaker 2: everyone has a great week and good luck to you.
- 15:17Speaker 2: I'm hopeful that this plan comes together for you.
- 15:20Speaker 3: Thanks buddy, I appreciate it.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Next step we have Javid Mullett with Whitetail Edge, who
- 15:26Speaker 2: connected on a great Ohio buck with no food plots,
- 15:29Speaker 2: no nothing, just intel and the good game plan. Here
- 15:33Speaker 2: we go. Congratulations, you tagged a big deal to kick
- 15:38Speaker 2: off the season. How's it feel?
- 15:39Speaker 4: Thank you, man, I really appreciate it. Thanks for the
- 15:42Speaker 4: innight here. I am humbled for the opportunity and just
- 15:46Speaker 4: to keep grinding here, but it feels great. I love
- 15:50Speaker 4: killing early, especially for the situation that I'm in with
- 15:53Speaker 4: filming Ben, for Whitetail Edge and everything else. Like the
- 15:56Speaker 4: sooner I can kill, the more that pressure is off
- 15:59Speaker 4: of me, in a freeze, everything up for me to
- 16:01Speaker 4: be able to really do what I need to do here.
- 16:03Speaker 2: For White Till Edge, yeah, your your tag is filled,
- 16:06Speaker 2: but your season is just getting started still exactly everyone else.
- 16:11Speaker 4: Yep, my wife, my wife. Everybody's telling telling my wife, oh, yeah,
- 16:14Speaker 4: you know he killed early and you should be good,
- 16:16Speaker 4: and she's like no, no, yeah.
- 16:21Speaker 2: No, that that's awesome. So here, let's hear the story
- 16:24Speaker 2: and and kind of how you're able to develop a plan.
- 16:26Speaker 2: Everyone's always waiting, you know, killing a buck early there
- 16:29Speaker 2: is a sense of relief, like, man, it all my plan,
- 16:32Speaker 2: my preparation, my scouting plan A came together. Uh how
- 16:37Speaker 2: did you put together a solid plan that came together
- 16:39Speaker 2: so smoothly? Yeah.
- 16:41Speaker 4: So basically over the years, I've kind of learned that
- 16:44Speaker 4: I I don't put a lot of pressure on myself,
- 16:47Speaker 4: or I'm pretty relaxed, and and oh I can't find
- 16:50Speaker 4: a dear, I can't do this or I can't do that.
- 16:52Speaker 4: Like I'm just like I do my thing and if
- 16:55Speaker 4: it works great, if not, I'm just out having fun.
- 16:59Speaker 4: And and so I did. I also killed Opening Morning.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Actually I think it was back in twenty two with
- 17:06Speaker 4: the exact same strategy. And basically this this is on
- 17:10Speaker 4: a on a permission property that a couple other guys
- 17:13Speaker 4: can hunt, neighboring neighboring guys hunt, and so I have
- 17:17Speaker 4: to I have to bounce around between you know, their spots,
- 17:21Speaker 4: Like I stay await from spots that I know that
- 17:23Speaker 4: they have stands and stuff. And basically my strategy is
- 17:27Speaker 4: mock scrapes and sell cameras, and I just I get
- 17:31Speaker 4: them in spot and transition zones that I feel like
- 17:34Speaker 4: are close to their bedding, and and then I I
- 17:38Speaker 4: find points where I can put those cameras and make
- 17:41Speaker 4: make scrapes, and and then I just wait it out
- 17:44Speaker 4: and whether the deer is going to move in and
- 17:47Speaker 4: use that or not. It's it's, you know, kind of
- 17:50Speaker 4: just up in the air. But like I said, I
- 17:51Speaker 4: just wait then for my cameras to tell me what
- 17:53Speaker 4: they're doing and if a deer moves in and uses that.
- 17:57Speaker 2: So talk a little bit more about that set up
- 17:59Speaker 2: with the mock scrapes, intead cameras. Are those in conjunction
- 18:01Speaker 2: with food sources, betting mass crops? What did that setup
- 18:06Speaker 2: look like?
- 18:06Speaker 4: Yeah, so all that stuff comes into play this particular farm.
- 18:10Speaker 4: Obviously I did not there's no food plots or anything
- 18:13Speaker 4: on that I did on this farm wasn't feeding or anything.
- 18:17Speaker 4: And so it's ag. It's it's a mix of of
- 18:19Speaker 4: of timber and ag. And it's pretty steep rough terrain
- 18:23Speaker 4: as well. So so that stuff comes into play as
- 18:26Speaker 4: far as for movement and travel. But in this particular instance,
- 18:30Speaker 4: usually obviously everybody says food to you know, bed to food,
- 18:34Speaker 4: bed to food, and that it is accurate. But I
- 18:38Speaker 4: think in this instance it was maybe a little bit
- 18:42Speaker 4: opposite from what people typically think, Like like usually a
- 18:46Speaker 4: deer beds in the woods, right, and then it goes
- 18:47Speaker 4: into the agfield to feed. Well, this deer was actually
- 18:51Speaker 4: bedded in extending cornfield and he was going into the
- 18:56Speaker 4: woods into the end of the hardwood timber for feeding
- 18:59Speaker 4: in the oaks. And so I killed him between the
- 19:01Speaker 4: standing corn field and the hardwood timber.
- 19:05Speaker 2: That's interesting. That's that's the polar opposite of what most
- 19:08Speaker 2: people liked me planned on. And there's there's the debate
- 19:10Speaker 2: if they bed in corn or if they don't bet
- 19:12Speaker 2: in corn, will hear the story for you?
- 19:14Speaker 4: And I guess I don't know for one hundred percent
- 19:16Speaker 4: certainty that he was. I should actually go out and
- 19:18Speaker 4: walk that field, because I know there are some areas
- 19:21Speaker 4: that are maybe a little bit grassy or the corn
- 19:22Speaker 4: didn't come up as much, and I just I kind
- 19:25Speaker 4: of assumed that he did. I didn't, you know, I
- 19:27Speaker 4: didn't have a drone out look or anything like that,
- 19:30Speaker 4: So I don't know for sure. But that's where he
- 19:34Speaker 4: came from. If he wasn't betted in the corn, he
- 19:36Speaker 4: was betted ride on the edge, you know, across the
- 19:39Speaker 4: corner from me.
- 19:41Speaker 2: What made you anticipate him betted, you know, in the corner,
- 19:44Speaker 2: on the edge of corn to set up that play.
- 19:47Speaker 4: So this camera wasn't necessarily I didn't really have it
- 19:51Speaker 4: in mind that, okay, this these deer are going to
- 19:53Speaker 4: bet in the corn. It was just the hillside that
- 19:56Speaker 4: I had to hunt. And again this is my strategy
- 19:59Speaker 4: of just I try to pick the best spots that
- 20:01Speaker 4: I can, and I scatter cameras all throughout the farm
- 20:04Speaker 4: in these spots, and I try to tell people like
- 20:07Speaker 4: if I if I get a twenty five to thirty
- 20:10Speaker 4: percent success rate on these cameras, mockscrapes, setups, I should
- 20:16Speaker 4: have two or three spots that are gonna work for me,
- 20:18Speaker 4: like because I try to usually do my roll of
- 20:21Speaker 4: thumb is about a camera per twenty acres. Is what
- 20:24Speaker 4: I like to is what I like to do, And
- 20:26Speaker 4: then I just try to pick these spots. But this
- 20:28Speaker 4: particular spot was so this permission property was timbered seven
- 20:33Speaker 4: eight years ago and it's really really thick in a
- 20:38Speaker 4: lot of the lot of the wooded areas. And this
- 20:41Speaker 4: spot was a pretty steep hillside, west facing hillside, And
- 20:46Speaker 4: I often like to look for the east facing or
- 20:50Speaker 4: the north facing hillsides and try to monitor those spots
- 20:55Speaker 4: a little bit more for the south or west prevailing
- 20:59Speaker 4: wind a five on. So many deer like to bed
- 21:02Speaker 4: on those on those north and east facing hillsides with
- 21:05Speaker 4: the south through a west wind. They can watch down
- 21:08Speaker 4: the hill and they can smell from anything behind them.
- 21:11Speaker 4: But and this is another another key factor that that
- 21:15Speaker 4: was going on here is this particular spot was on
- 21:18Speaker 4: the west facing hillside, and it was I saw there
- 21:22Speaker 4: was a trail that was kind of coming coming to
- 21:24Speaker 4: the standing to the big oak timber, and and I
- 21:28Speaker 4: was I was fairly close to a property line here.
- 21:31Speaker 4: The neighboring timber is mature. There's there's big oak oak
- 21:35Speaker 4: flats on the neighboring timber, and then my side is
- 21:39Speaker 4: is timbered. There is some oaks throughout, but a lot
- 21:43Speaker 4: of it is just thick shrubby brush stuff. And so
- 21:46Speaker 4: this deer was headed to the neighbor's oak flat, and
- 21:51Speaker 4: so I was a little bit limited with I may
- 21:53Speaker 4: not have put the camera where I did. Obviously, if
- 21:56Speaker 4: I probably would have gone over to the actual oak
- 21:59Speaker 4: flat and made a mock scrape, but I obviously couldn't
- 22:02Speaker 4: do that because that's on the neighbors. So this scenario
- 22:06Speaker 4: was just trying to get that travel because I knew
- 22:10Speaker 4: that's what they would do once those those oaks start dropping,
- 22:13Speaker 4: those acorns start dropping, And that's why I put the
- 22:16Speaker 4: camera where I did. And now it ended up we've
- 22:20Speaker 4: been having quite a few north northeast winds and that's
- 22:24Speaker 4: what happened. He moved into this spot. I feel like
- 22:28Speaker 4: because of that northeast wind was on a west facing hillside,
- 22:32Speaker 4: and that's what I capitalized. Then Monday night, that was
- 22:35Speaker 4: the last predicted northeast wind that we were going to
- 22:38Speaker 4: have for a while, So I knew that if I
- 22:40Speaker 4: wanted to kill him there, I would.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Have to do it. Yeah, do you think there's strategy
- 22:44Speaker 2: looking out into the calendar for the next seven days
- 22:46Speaker 2: or so? Do you think the same type of strategy
- 22:48Speaker 2: and idea is something that people should have in their mind.
- 22:51Speaker 4: Absolutely, I mean, obviously I think anymore if I I
- 22:56Speaker 4: try to have these cameras and mock scrapes put out, Uh,
- 23:01Speaker 4: it's I'm still trying to figure that out. Just whenever
- 23:04Speaker 4: you have time. It comes down to whenever you can
- 23:06Speaker 4: get to it, because you can still do it in season.
- 23:10Speaker 4: It's just it's it's a little bit it's harder because obviously,
- 23:13Speaker 4: if you're going into timber in these sensitive spots and
- 23:17Speaker 4: and and you know, essentially scouting your way through and
- 23:20Speaker 4: figuring it out, then you're blowing your deer out like
- 23:23Speaker 4: you're that's just inevitable now if you can. I would
- 23:27Speaker 4: say in season, I'm a little bit more cautious about
- 23:29Speaker 4: that unless you're okay with just blowing your deer out
- 23:32Speaker 4: and then and then probably your cameras be dead for
- 23:35Speaker 4: you know, a few days or a week or whatever
- 23:37Speaker 4: until those deer all move back in or in some
- 23:40Speaker 4: cases the you know, you might blow deer out and
- 23:42Speaker 4: he might be there that night.
- 23:44Speaker 2: It just depends.
- 23:45Speaker 4: But uh, in season, I'm usually a little bit more cautious,
- 23:48Speaker 4: and I usually try to just stay on the edges
- 23:52Speaker 4: field edges where you can drive to or run your
- 23:54Speaker 4: e bike or whatever is is often you know, an easy,
- 23:58Speaker 4: easiest way to do it, and then hang your cameras
- 24:02Speaker 4: on actual live scrapes if they're already showing. Unless I
- 24:08Speaker 4: will say, unless you can't shoot to one of those scrapes.
- 24:12Speaker 4: I usually try to make so that I can shoot
- 24:14Speaker 4: to the scrape that my camera's hungover. And then another
- 24:19Speaker 4: big thing that I do is is I try to
- 24:23Speaker 4: point the camera and find the route that a deer
- 24:25Speaker 4: will take, regardless whether there's a scrape there or not.
- 24:30Speaker 4: So the more factors that you can put right and
- 24:32Speaker 4: the more exes I guess you could call it, that
- 24:34Speaker 4: you can put right in front of your camera, the
- 24:37Speaker 4: likelihood of you getting that deer if he comes through
- 24:40Speaker 4: is a lot higher, even if he's not checking the scrape.
- 24:43Speaker 4: So that's something that I always keep in mind. And
- 24:46Speaker 4: then obviously if you do do mock scrapes, then I'm
- 24:50Speaker 4: as I'm scouting, I'm looking for trees for me to
- 24:53Speaker 4: be able to hunt with different winds that I can
- 24:57Speaker 4: kill right if a deer travels that or is hitting
- 25:00Speaker 4: that scrape.
- 25:02Speaker 2: Man, that's some really good insight because I feel that,
- 25:05Speaker 2: you know, there's been some really good deer get that
- 25:07Speaker 2: have been shot and uh, you know, doing reugh fresh
- 25:10Speaker 2: now it's like you kind of start hearing this commonality
- 25:12Speaker 2: or this theme of scouting and developing you know, a
- 25:15Speaker 2: plan to your point, maybe it works twenty percent of
- 25:17Speaker 2: the time thirty percent of the time, but dang when
- 25:19Speaker 2: it does, oh man, well, And.
- 25:22Speaker 4: That's the way I look at it, Like, dude, I
- 25:24Speaker 4: have I think I have seven cameras on on this
- 25:29Speaker 4: particular piece over over mock Scrapes, and I, like I
- 25:33Speaker 4: said it in a video that I took, like, if
- 25:36Speaker 4: if twenty percent of these spots work, like I'll still
- 25:39Speaker 4: have some good spots like and that's the way that's
- 25:42Speaker 4: and and and the more the more you do this
- 25:44Speaker 4: and the longer you do it, I'm like, especially mock Scrapes,
- 25:48Speaker 4: the more successful you get. Like it's just it's just experience.
- 25:52Speaker 4: And you can sit here and listen to all the
- 25:54Speaker 4: different types and different ways that that people do it,
- 25:57Speaker 4: and and sure you can learn a lot from that,
- 25:59Speaker 4: but until you actually go put boots on the ground
- 26:01Speaker 4: and just just start figuring it out yourself, like you're
- 26:04Speaker 4: going to fail and you just have to expect that.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Looking, you know, here in the next seven ish days
- 26:20Speaker 2: for weather, it looks like there might be a front
- 26:22Speaker 2: rolling in for folks that still have a tag in
- 26:25Speaker 2: their pocket. And this front rolls in. I mean, do
- 26:26Speaker 2: you think this is going to be a time that
- 26:28Speaker 2: they should really prioritize to be out there. Yeah?
- 26:32Speaker 4: Absolutely, I mean I think obviously my favorite times are
- 26:36Speaker 4: are small cold fronts of October, and I just proved
- 26:39Speaker 4: that again. You know, the other night was a little
- 26:41Speaker 4: bit the same. The pressure was rising a little bit.
- 26:45Speaker 4: I have a hard time sitting in because a lot
- 26:48Speaker 4: of my spots are are deep in and their access
- 26:52Speaker 4: is tough. So I have a hard time sitting in
- 26:55Speaker 4: those spots if I don't know that the deer is
- 26:59Speaker 4: around at least, Like I don't just go blindly hunt
- 27:03Speaker 4: these these these scrapes just because the weather's good, like
- 27:07Speaker 4: I would. I would rather, you know, go hunt a
- 27:10Speaker 4: different property, or hunt on the fringe to kill some doze,
- 27:13Speaker 4: or maybe do an observation, sit on a big egg field.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Or something like that.
- 27:17Speaker 4: But I'm not diving into any spots until I know
- 27:21Speaker 4: that the deer is in the area at least. And
- 27:24Speaker 4: then then is when if the conditions are right with
- 27:27Speaker 4: a with a cold front moving in, then just go
- 27:29Speaker 4: even go sit Even if maybe he didn't hit your camera,
- 27:32Speaker 4: maybe he hit a different camera. A couple hundred yards away.
- 27:36Speaker 4: You just if you know he's in the area and
- 27:38Speaker 4: you get these cold fronts, absolutely you know it's it's
- 27:41Speaker 4: time to go in.
- 27:43Speaker 2: I love it all right, Scale one to ten. Where
- 27:45Speaker 2: do you think the next seven days will be? You
- 27:47Speaker 2: know for October? Uh October bear with me here? Uh
- 27:54Speaker 2: sure October, October eighth, October fifteenth, Scale one to ten.
- 27:58Speaker 2: Where do you put it? Oh?
- 28:01Speaker 4: Probably I would say a five or six.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Okay, I wouldn't.
- 28:07Speaker 4: I wouldn't be in a hurry. Don't don't haunt just
- 28:10Speaker 4: to haunt. I mean, if you do haunt just to haunt,
- 28:13Speaker 4: then go sit a spot that that you know, you
- 28:15Speaker 4: don't care if you mess it up. Unless unless again
- 28:19Speaker 4: you get that and get that fake picture you know
- 28:21Speaker 4: that he's there, then then for sure, like go go
- 28:25Speaker 4: go in after him. But I I don't get super
- 28:28Speaker 4: excited early October, especially coming into the wall like this.
- 28:33Speaker 4: It's unless the camera tells you that that you need
- 28:36Speaker 4: to go, then then I would be hesitant.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I like it.
- 28:39Speaker 5: Well.
- 28:39Speaker 2: Congratulations once again. I have a feeling you'll be behind
- 28:43Speaker 2: the camera of some more big bucks dropping this fall,
- 28:46Speaker 2: so really appreciate it. Congratulations once again.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Thank you, I appreciate for the offer. Thanks Jake.
- 28:52Speaker 2: All Right, next up on the line, we have Aaron
- 28:54Speaker 2: Heppler from Pennsylvania. How's it going this morning.
- 28:57Speaker 5: What's up, dude? It's good to be here.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so your guys is state wide PA season opened
- 29:05Speaker 2: very recently and you got the jitters out and a
- 29:09Speaker 2: shot of dough.
- 29:10Speaker 5: I did, Man, I'm very excited.
- 29:13Speaker 2: Uh.
- 29:13Speaker 6: It's always good to like knock the cob webs off
- 29:16Speaker 6: and like, you know, get a shot out of his saddle,
- 29:19Speaker 6: and it was a really good shot at twenty yards,
- 29:21Speaker 6: So that makes you feel it makes you feel good
- 29:23Speaker 6: for the rest of the season, you know.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think there's a lot of wisdom
- 29:28Speaker 2: to that for anyone that's maybe doesn't have like for
- 29:31Speaker 2: a lot of guys, bucks show up later in the year,
- 29:33Speaker 2: and so if you're in that boat, I feel like
- 29:36Speaker 2: that's such a great opportunity to go through your draw cycle,
- 29:39Speaker 2: pick a hair on the deer, squeeze off the shot,
- 29:42Speaker 2: because realistically, we all work really hard for that one
- 29:45Speaker 2: opportunity throughout the whole fall. And it was that kind
- 29:49Speaker 2: of your thought process or were you just out of
- 29:51Speaker 2: Venison You're like, hey, I want to get the free
- 29:52Speaker 2: throw a little bit old for.
- 29:53Speaker 5: I mean, you know how much I love my venison.
- 29:56Speaker 6: But that's right, Chef Aaron at the You know, no, man,
- 30:02Speaker 6: you know I always go through this thing where you
- 30:04Speaker 6: get bucks on camera and you want to start out
- 30:07Speaker 6: by immediately hunting that buck because you think it's your
- 30:09Speaker 6: best opportunity, and there is sometimes there's opportunity to shoot
- 30:12Speaker 6: that buck on the opener, but really you're kind of
- 30:16Speaker 6: setting yourself up for failure a lot of times, like
- 30:18Speaker 6: if you're not ready for that. There's been years where
- 30:22Speaker 6: I haven't practiced enough archery out of a saddle or
- 30:26Speaker 6: out of whatever I'm planning on hunting on in and
- 30:29Speaker 6: I spent a lot of time doing that. I spend
- 30:30Speaker 6: a lot of time doing that right before the season,
- 30:32Speaker 6: like get up in the saddle, do some offside shooting.
- 30:37Speaker 6: You know, my wife was helping throw the arrows up
- 30:39Speaker 6: to me in the tree the other day, and that
- 30:41Speaker 6: kind of thing really helps. But actually putting an arrow
- 30:45Speaker 6: through a deer once or twice is to me, is
- 30:49Speaker 6: so key to making a successful shot on a buck
- 30:52Speaker 6: later on, because I get buck fever so bad, man,
- 30:55Speaker 6: And it really really does help make the shot process
- 30:59Speaker 6: when a deer in front of you kind of more
- 31:01Speaker 6: of a second nature if you can make it happen
- 31:03Speaker 6: a few times.
- 31:05Speaker 2: Yeah, I think that's that's a great piece of advice.
- 31:07Speaker 2: So looking here in the next week, I know you're
- 31:11Speaker 2: you're gonna hunting out of state. What's your game plan
- 31:15Speaker 2: with the weather and you know this current time of year,
- 31:19Speaker 2: I feel like October progresses pretty quickly. Where like the
- 31:21Speaker 2: excitement of opening day and then it's like, man, we're
- 31:23Speaker 2: all the deer, so like, where are you at in
- 31:25Speaker 2: your strategy and expectations and where are you headed?
- 31:29Speaker 6: Well, the October law is happening early here, man. I
- 31:32Speaker 6: mean there's no acorns anywhere. Everything's been so dry, so
- 31:37Speaker 6: the mountaintops and stuff are are are just there's nothing,
- 31:41Speaker 6: not a lot happening. And that's across the board. Like
- 31:43Speaker 6: anybody who talked to here is like, I'm not my
- 31:45Speaker 6: cameras are dead. I haven't seen any deer in fields.
- 31:48Speaker 5: Nothing.
- 31:49Speaker 6: And so I've been wanting to do this little Jersey
- 31:52Speaker 6: bear hunt kind of thing for a while. I'm gonna
- 31:55Speaker 6: be going there with with some friends locally, with Mitt
- 31:59Speaker 6: Shirk and group of guys. But there the Jersey bear
- 32:03Speaker 6: population is pretty big, so we're gonna be bow hunting.
- 32:06Speaker 6: They have a bow hunting season that has a couple
- 32:09Speaker 6: of day overlap with a flintlock, a flintlock muzzloader type thing.
- 32:15Speaker 6: The weather there is it's it's a little on the
- 32:17Speaker 6: warm side and it's a lot of invasive plants there,
- 32:21Speaker 6: so it's really going to be like hunt the edges
- 32:24Speaker 6: of the cover because it's so thick you can't really
- 32:26Speaker 6: get into it. Even if you got into it, it
- 32:29Speaker 6: would be literally sitting under tunnels of brush. But I'm
- 32:33Speaker 6: pretty excited. There's a lot of deer showing up on
- 32:35Speaker 6: camera there. We got some permission on some just knock
- 32:40Speaker 6: on door stuff kind of kind of thing, and there's
- 32:42Speaker 6: a couple pieces of public that we've actually found some
- 32:45Speaker 6: pretty decent bears on. In fact, we were there last
- 32:49Speaker 6: week and bumped into a mom with a sow with cubs.
- 32:53Speaker 6: Now in Jersey you can't shoot a sow that has
- 32:55Speaker 6: cubs with her, but you know, just kind of speaking
- 32:58Speaker 6: of bears in the area, it's kind of kind of
- 33:00Speaker 6: cool but made for a hairy situation.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Are you gonna buy a Are you gonna buy a
- 33:05Speaker 2: white tail? Tag when you're there too, in case you
- 33:07Speaker 2: run across on.
- 33:08Speaker 5: Yeah, the cool thing is is.
- 33:11Speaker 6: When you buy your bowl license for Jersey, you get
- 33:14Speaker 6: a buck and a dough tag right away. It's a
- 33:17Speaker 6: pretty inexpensive tag, and the bear permits are like two
- 33:20Speaker 6: bucks apiece for non residents. They don't they want to
- 33:25Speaker 6: then the bear hurts, So it should be a pretty
- 33:28Speaker 6: fun hunt, you know. And as far as deer goes.
- 33:32Speaker 6: These farmers that we knocked on, we're like, please shoot
- 33:34Speaker 6: dear if you have an opportunity, like we like, have
- 33:37Speaker 6: fun trying to kill a bear. But if you have
- 33:39Speaker 6: the opportunity, like police harvest the deer because it's a
- 33:42Speaker 6: they do some pretty serious damage on these farms.
- 33:46Speaker 2: So so with that in mind, kind of an opportunistic
- 33:51Speaker 2: hunt where it's like, Okay, if a bear comes through,
- 33:52Speaker 2: I'm gonna be able to shoot a bear. If a
- 33:55Speaker 2: dough or a buck comes by, I'm gonna be ready
- 33:57Speaker 2: to go. Does that change how you're anying on setting
- 34:00Speaker 2: up to some regard, I mean, the edge of habitat
- 34:03Speaker 2: sounds like a great spot for setting up for a
- 34:05Speaker 2: deer too. Is that kind of what's in your mind?
- 34:07Speaker 6: Yeah, it seems like the bears and the deer are
- 34:10Speaker 6: using kind of the same because everything, like I said,
- 34:12Speaker 6: everything's so tight. The bears are a little bit more
- 34:15Speaker 6: prone to going through that, like the thick stuff, but
- 34:18Speaker 6: a lot of the deer are getting funneled through any
- 34:20Speaker 6: little shoots that come out of the woods there. They're
- 34:24Speaker 6: using old logging roads a lot on these farms. There's
- 34:28Speaker 6: a lot of I've noticed there's a lot of like
- 34:31Speaker 6: those old fence line rock piles that mark the border,
- 34:35Speaker 6: and if there's any low spot, the deer crossing over
- 34:37Speaker 6: that stuff. So that's I'm I'm hoping there's a couple
- 34:40Speaker 6: spots like that that I'm hoping to get to hunt,
- 34:43Speaker 6: you know, just kind of pinch points like that fence lines.
- 34:46Speaker 6: They've been crossing a lot of that kind of stuff.
- 34:48Speaker 6: So looking looking forward to just kind of whatever comes first. Man,
- 34:53Speaker 6: I'm not going to be I'm not going to be picky.
- 34:56Speaker 2: I love it so looping back to Pennsylvania with the
- 34:59Speaker 2: lack of acorn production on the mountaintops, I mean, I
- 35:02Speaker 2: know you have a lot of experience hunting that type
- 35:04Speaker 2: of terrain. For someone that's struggling right now and looking
- 35:08Speaker 2: into the next week, knowing that if you can find
- 35:12Speaker 2: a tree for you know, dropping some acorns, like what
- 35:14Speaker 2: is what would you tell someone that's like, hey, man,
- 35:17Speaker 2: I have a couple of days off next week and
- 35:20Speaker 2: I know we're quote unquote creeping into the lull and
- 35:23Speaker 2: there hasn't been much activity on my cameras. What would
- 35:26Speaker 2: be your suggestion to that type of person and what's
- 35:28Speaker 2: key in on?
- 35:29Speaker 6: So there are there are acorns in places, they're just
- 35:34Speaker 6: really not up high and they're very isolated. So if
- 35:37Speaker 6: you can find the acorns or beech nuts or something
- 35:41Speaker 6: like that, I know, very stereotypically it's like hunt the
- 35:45Speaker 6: upper third of the of the hills or whatever. I'm
- 35:48Speaker 6: not really finding that. I'm finding that deer are in
- 35:50Speaker 6: the lower quarter of the hills at the current moment.
- 35:55Speaker 6: So if you can find a thermal that that will
- 35:59Speaker 6: they're really you know, the wind is not happening right now.
- 36:02Speaker 6: Normally you have a lot of wind right now too,
- 36:04Speaker 6: but everything is very thermal based. So if you can
- 36:07Speaker 6: find a creek that you can get a longer stretch
- 36:10Speaker 6: from a downward thermal and make it more predictable for
- 36:13Speaker 6: yourself and find something that's like halfway or lower up
- 36:17Speaker 6: the hill that's producing some kind of nuts, or if
- 36:19Speaker 6: you can find a brows line where they're eating um,
- 36:23Speaker 6: some kind of buck brush, or if there's berries still
- 36:27Speaker 6: around stuff like that light food sources. Or if you
- 36:31Speaker 6: can find an acorn tree down in a bottom like
- 36:33Speaker 6: that and focus on deer that are coming up and
- 36:35Speaker 6: down to feed on that that those acorns that would
- 36:39Speaker 6: be pretty clutch.
- 36:39Speaker 5: But the water is pretty important.
- 36:42Speaker 6: I've been seeing a lot of deer in that area,
- 36:45Speaker 6: and I think it's the areas that you know still
- 36:47Speaker 6: have creeks that are spring fed, they have like a
- 36:51Speaker 6: little trickle, and even that is attractive right now.
- 36:54Speaker 2: So those are some key things. And so basically that
- 36:58Speaker 2: lower quarter is where I assume you're finding most more
- 37:01Speaker 2: signed than what you typically would find up top. So
- 37:03Speaker 2: it seems like it might be a benefit to some
- 37:07Speaker 2: regard from based off what you're saying is like you
- 37:09Speaker 2: can almost rule out some of the tops or upper
- 37:10Speaker 2: thirds where people traditionally have hunted and focus more lower.
- 37:14Speaker 5: Yeah right now.
- 37:15Speaker 6: I mean I've even spent some time just kind of
- 37:17Speaker 6: driving around and.
- 37:19Speaker 5: If there's service roads that are open and stuff.
- 37:21Speaker 6: PA doesn't the game Commission actually in Pennsylvania puts out
- 37:25Speaker 6: seasonal roads. I think on X has some marked, but
- 37:29Speaker 6: you can actually find them on their like interactive web
- 37:31Speaker 6: page and find where the seasonal roads are. They could
- 37:34Speaker 6: drive on them because it's there are occasionally areas where
- 37:38Speaker 6: they're coming out on tops like that.
- 37:39Speaker 5: But if you've got something that goes through.
- 37:41Speaker 6: A bottom that you can drive and kind of just
- 37:44Speaker 6: observe without being too invasive, that's been really helpful. I've
- 37:48Speaker 6: done that a couple times, and it's fun to do
- 37:49Speaker 6: with the family too, like let's count the deer kind
- 37:52Speaker 6: of thing, you know.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I think those are some really key pieces there.
- 37:56Speaker 2: And so, you know, looking at all things considered the weather,
- 37:59Speaker 2: the time of year, what do you anticipate the next
- 38:03Speaker 2: seven days to be as far as potential hunting opportunity
- 38:09Speaker 2: On a scale one to ten.
- 38:12Speaker 6: I would say it's probably about a six right now,
- 38:15Speaker 6: other than we're going to have a first cold snap
- 38:19Speaker 6: on Friday morning. We're supposed to get our first forty
- 38:22Speaker 6: degree morning, which is pretty historically here. That's one of
- 38:28Speaker 6: the times where you'll get bucks and any deer really, like,
- 38:32Speaker 6: if you're looking for any deer, that's one of the
- 38:34Speaker 6: times where you do get some movement up top, even
- 38:37Speaker 6: if it's dry. I've had years where you have, like
- 38:40Speaker 6: I mean, it's going to be eighty five degrees today
- 38:44Speaker 6: and then it's going to be high seventies to mid
- 38:47Speaker 6: eighties until Thursday, and then we start to have a
- 38:50Speaker 6: little bit of a drop. So I've seen that a
- 38:53Speaker 6: couple of times, where that very first cold front you'll
- 38:56Speaker 6: get some stuff moving in to just kind of see
- 38:58Speaker 6: what's going on. As far as as like I said,
- 39:01Speaker 6: as far as tops go, there's really not a lot
- 39:03Speaker 6: of sign happening right now, so you could key on
- 39:07Speaker 6: some of your good spots probably towards the end of
- 39:10Speaker 6: the week here. I think it's kind of pretty trendy
- 39:13Speaker 6: for the whole for these you know, a couple of
- 39:15Speaker 6: states like Jersey, PA, Delaware, kind of the same weather
- 39:18Speaker 6: pattern with a little bit of variance. But I think
- 39:22Speaker 6: that would probably be something you could do. Is kind
- 39:25Speaker 6: of get I wouldn't go to your best spot that day,
- 39:28Speaker 6: but you could get close to the edge of it
- 39:30Speaker 6: and actually maybe catch something or learn something that you'll
- 39:34Speaker 6: you'll want to use later on towards maybe the twentieth
- 39:37Speaker 6: of October.
- 39:39Speaker 2: I love it. Yeah, that's I appreciate the out East report.
- 39:43Speaker 2: I know you have your ear to the ground, and
- 39:45Speaker 2: I really wish you the best of luck this season,
- 39:48Speaker 2: and I hope the New Jersey Hut is going to
- 39:50Speaker 2: be I mean, you've got three tags in your pocket.
- 39:52Speaker 2: Anything can happen.
- 39:54Speaker 6: I'm excited, man, I have, like, I have twelve deer
- 39:56Speaker 6: tags this year, so I'm judged seriously. Yeah, a PA
- 40:01Speaker 6: put out quite a few tags this year. We have
- 40:04Speaker 6: a pretty cool program too. In specific units they might
- 40:09Speaker 6: put out like, for example, the Special REGs area they
- 40:13Speaker 6: put out seventy thousand dough tags a year, and then
- 40:16Speaker 6: inside some of those areas that haven't even higher density,
- 40:20Speaker 6: they put out Deer Management Assistance Program tags. And some
- 40:26Speaker 6: of those A lot of those are like state forests
- 40:29Speaker 6: and that kind of thing on areas like that, and
- 40:32Speaker 6: those are above and beyond your tag allotment. They're a
- 40:35Speaker 6: little bit they're like three dollars more or something like that.
- 40:38Speaker 6: Nothing crazy, But I bought a couple of those for
- 40:41Speaker 6: up north because I like to use those when for
- 40:44Speaker 6: the PA rifle season. It's pretty fun to just kind
- 40:46Speaker 6: of walk around and you know, last year we had
- 40:49Speaker 6: snow for that kind of thing. So it's kind of
- 40:51Speaker 6: kind of fun to do that kind of thing.
- 40:53Speaker 2: Awesome, man, Well, good luck, good luck the rest of season.
- 40:56Speaker 2: Appreciate you ouping on here and give an any time report.
- 40:59Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 41:00Speaker 2: We have Zach Kaim who is now part of the
- 41:03Speaker 2: two hundred inch club because you have the shirt to
- 41:05Speaker 2: prove it.
- 41:06Speaker 3: That's right, it's coming man, good good, how about you.
- 41:09Speaker 2: It's going great man. I ran across your post here
- 41:14Speaker 2: and you tagged a magnificent white tail and you had
- 41:18Speaker 2: a bunch of history with this deer, and let's just
- 41:21Speaker 2: dive right into it. How kind of like the condensed
- 41:24Speaker 2: version of the multiple years of history and then how
- 41:26Speaker 2: it ultimately came together, you know, really quick here in Ohio.
- 41:29Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 41:30Speaker 7: Yeah, So in twenty twenty two, this buck was on
- 41:34Speaker 7: my radar. I knew he wasn't a shooter at this point,
- 41:37Speaker 7: but I actually have a phone video of him walking
- 41:40Speaker 7: underneath my tree stand in November. Fast forward to the
- 41:46Speaker 7: next season. He ballooned into like a mid one sixties
- 41:52Speaker 7: class buck as a four year old, and I ended
- 41:56Speaker 7: up missing him. I misarranged him. He was a little
- 42:00Speaker 7: bit further than I thought he was. I thought I
- 42:02Speaker 7: knew how far he was, and he was just a
- 42:04Speaker 7: little bit further and so so that was pretty brutal,
- 42:08Speaker 7: I thought. But then it got worse because I did
- 42:11Speaker 7: the same thing the next year, which would have been
- 42:14Speaker 7: this past season, when he was a five year old.
- 42:16Speaker 7: He would have been I actually have his match set
- 42:19Speaker 7: from last year. He would have been about a one
- 42:22Speaker 7: hundred and ninety eight inch buck depending on his spread.
- 42:27Speaker 7: So that and I had several other encounters with him
- 42:31Speaker 7: last year too. He caught me drawing back on him
- 42:34Speaker 7: at thirty yards at one point. There was another time
- 42:38Speaker 7: he was like fifty yards over the property line during
- 42:42Speaker 7: gun season.
- 42:44Speaker 3: Obviously he didn't take.
- 42:45Speaker 7: That shot, and so he was just Yeah, he was
- 42:49Speaker 7: teasing me the last few years. But then then yeah,
- 42:54Speaker 7: fast forward to this year, it was kind of hard
- 42:58Speaker 7: to tell how big he was. His rack changed slightly,
- 43:03Speaker 7: he lost a decent side drop time, but he did
- 43:06Speaker 7: look like he got he put on some inches. But
- 43:10Speaker 7: I was I was estimating him probably in the one nineties.
- 43:15Speaker 7: But yeah, I tried to trade to tried to stay
- 43:18Speaker 7: out of his core area. He actually didn't really live
- 43:22Speaker 7: on our farm, or he never really bettered on our farm.
- 43:24Speaker 3: I should say.
- 43:27Speaker 7: Nine percent of the time, I'd say he bettered on
- 43:29Speaker 7: the one of the neighbors.
- 43:31Speaker 3: And so.
- 43:33Speaker 7: Fast forward to opening day this year, we had kind
- 43:37Speaker 7: of tried to stay out of his area with choke
- 43:40Speaker 7: cameras and whatnot, just we have enough history now, we
- 43:43Speaker 7: kind of have an idea of what's going on, and
- 43:48Speaker 7: he would be kind of camera shy if he saw
- 43:50Speaker 7: a camera. And so opening day, he actually did walk
- 43:55Speaker 7: past one of the cameras that we had down there
- 44:00Speaker 7: in his area, and he was actually walking onto our
- 44:03Speaker 7: farm just before daylight, which was highly unusual. I talked
- 44:08Speaker 7: to my dad about it that morning. We're both like
- 44:11Speaker 7: that that actually might be the first time ever that
- 44:14Speaker 7: he was walking onto our farm in the morning that
- 44:17Speaker 7: closed to daylight.
- 44:18Speaker 3: And so so he.
- 44:20Speaker 7: Was headed there's a small there's a small creek drainage
- 44:23Speaker 7: that goes up into the interior of a cornfield. It's
- 44:28Speaker 7: like a seventy five yard wide strip of woods. And
- 44:31Speaker 7: so we're talking about it, and it's like, well, if
- 44:34Speaker 7: he is better than hours, like he could have easily
- 44:37Speaker 7: went back over to the neighbors, but if he is
- 44:39Speaker 7: better than hours, that's where he's going to be. Because
- 44:42Speaker 7: we knew, we knew deer beded in there before, h
- 44:45Speaker 7: just never him. But so I actually set up a
- 44:49Speaker 7: tree stand this summer thinking it would be more of
- 44:53Speaker 7: a rut spot, just because it's kind of in a
- 44:56Speaker 7: travel corridor, and wh in there, snuck in there and set up,
- 45:01Speaker 7: and seven o'clock here he comes, and yeah, the rest
- 45:07Speaker 7: is history.
- 45:09Speaker 2: That's that's amazing. And so how many times do you
- 45:13Speaker 2: think this deer cheated death? Because obviously you cheated death
- 45:15Speaker 2: of you multiple times, and then how many other times
- 45:19Speaker 2: have happened that that you're not well?
- 45:22Speaker 7: The crazy thing is so like a six year old buck,
- 45:24Speaker 7: a lot of times when you skid him out, you'll
- 45:26Speaker 7: see your old wounds and stuff.
- 45:28Speaker 3: And we didn't really find anything.
- 45:31Speaker 7: And I know he was a popular year because even
- 45:35Speaker 7: before this, but I've had six different neighbors contact me
- 45:39Speaker 7: about having pictures of them, and some of them are
- 45:41Speaker 7: like a mile away. So how how he didn't die
- 45:46Speaker 7: ever is amazing.
- 45:49Speaker 2: But that's crazy, so going, so you just make sure
- 45:53Speaker 2: I understand. So you guys had intell of I'm opening
- 45:55Speaker 2: morning going in and betting on you guys, and then
- 45:59Speaker 2: it was that evening when he went in there and
- 46:00Speaker 2: hunted him to try to go back out where he's
- 46:02Speaker 2: going to feed that evening.
- 46:03Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 46:04Speaker 7: Yeah, I don't know that it was necessarily where he
- 46:06Speaker 7: was trying to go to feed. I mean there's right now,
- 46:09Speaker 7: at least where we're a lot of red oaks are dropping,
- 46:12Speaker 7: so there's, you know, plenty of acorns. I kind of
- 46:16Speaker 7: assume he was coming to acorns. I was actually sitting
- 46:20Speaker 7: in a red oak, like that's the tree I was
- 46:22Speaker 7: sitting in. I got pretty tight to where I thought
- 46:26Speaker 7: he was bedded, so I think he literally had just
- 46:30Speaker 7: within a couple hundred yards. I think he had just
- 46:33Speaker 7: gotten out of bed and was making one of his
- 46:35Speaker 7: first scrapes of the evening.
- 46:36Speaker 2: Probably what was that like seeing him, Like, oh my gosh,
- 46:43Speaker 2: just plants coming together. I've screwed up on this deer
- 46:47Speaker 2: in the past, and he had come man like it's
- 46:49Speaker 2: about to happen.
- 46:50Speaker 7: Honestly, at that point, like I definitely had buck fever,
- 46:54Speaker 7: but it was more of like a like a dude,
- 46:57Speaker 7: let's just get this over with, Like I don't I
- 47:01Speaker 7: don't have time to like sit here and look at
- 47:03Speaker 7: his antlers, Like let's just lock in here and try
- 47:06Speaker 7: to get this over with, Like, let's not go through
- 47:08Speaker 7: the bs again. I was so tired of that, that
- 47:13Speaker 7: feeling of screwing it up.
- 47:15Speaker 3: So yeah, when I first.
- 47:17Speaker 7: Seen him, I knew immediately which bucket was. I seen
- 47:20Speaker 7: that flyer off of his G two and I told myself, Okay,
- 47:24Speaker 7: we're not going to look at the antlers anymore. Try
- 47:28Speaker 7: to limit the buck fever.
- 47:29Speaker 2: But yeah, so that's and so you said last year
- 47:33Speaker 2: he would have been in the nineties, is you know,
- 47:35Speaker 2: estimating with the spread? What did he what did he
- 47:38Speaker 2: end up taping out to. I know a lot of
- 47:39Speaker 2: people don't care, but I do, so I'm going to
- 47:41Speaker 2: ask you. Yeah, because he's a giant. Yeah, he is
- 47:43Speaker 2: a giant. He taped out to two thirteen and two eighth. Wow,
- 47:48Speaker 2: so pretty darn good jump. Yeah, and yeah, I think
- 47:53Speaker 2: I think the last two seasons he jumped twenty to
- 47:56Speaker 2: twenty five inches both years.
- 47:59Speaker 3: So yeah, which we had anomaly. We had a really wet.
- 48:03Speaker 7: Spring this year, which I've heard is good for antler groove.
- 48:07Speaker 7: But whether whether that's the case or not, he grew
- 48:11Speaker 7: a lot. He grew more than I thought I thought
- 48:13Speaker 7: he'd be in the one nineties. This year he blew
- 48:16Speaker 7: that out of the water.
- 48:18Speaker 2: And what was it like when you put your hands
- 48:20Speaker 2: on him finally, like after all the years of history
- 48:23Speaker 2: and everything else, Like was there a sense of like
- 48:25Speaker 2: the story's over now? Or or was it rejoiced right right.
- 48:29Speaker 7: When I seeing it, Like right when I walked up
- 48:32Speaker 7: to him, like a sense of relief, very relieved.
- 48:36Speaker 3: I was by myself.
- 48:37Speaker 7: I nelt down, said a little prayer, thank God for
- 48:43Speaker 7: letting me finally get him, lay my hands on him.
- 48:46Speaker 3: And so yeah, I was just very relieved and very grateful.
- 48:50Speaker 2: I would say, yeah, yeah, that's awesome. Congratulations. So for
- 48:54Speaker 2: let's let's pretend you didn't shoot this buck and it's
- 48:57Speaker 2: October eighth, and you're looking over the next seven days.
- 48:59Speaker 2: What would you what would you tell yourself or what
- 49:01Speaker 2: would you tell someone that that might be struggling a
- 49:03Speaker 2: little bit or trying to get together a game plan.
- 49:05Speaker 2: Maybe they know of something of a buck that's kind
- 49:08Speaker 2: of hanging around the area. And now we're getting into,
- 49:11Speaker 2: you know, the the first quarter of October and you know,
- 49:14Speaker 2: creeping deeper into the month. What what would you tell
- 49:17Speaker 2: them to pay attention to, at least in our area.
- 49:21Speaker 7: I would say, acorns, acorns and water, probably because it
- 49:26Speaker 7: was it's been really dry here in Ohio where we're at,
- 49:30Speaker 7: Like it's only rained a couple of times in the past,
- 49:35Speaker 7: I don't know, a month and a half or more.
- 49:38Speaker 7: So acorns and water and uh, like you know, seemingly,
- 49:44Speaker 7: you know, the October October lil is kind of like
- 49:48Speaker 7: around that time frame or around this timeframe. So but
- 49:52Speaker 7: I generally try to just look for hot time. Like
- 49:55Speaker 7: there's right now where we're at, there's so many acorns
- 49:57Speaker 7: dropping that it would be hard to like hee in
- 49:59Speaker 7: on a specific tree that you should hunt. But if
- 50:04Speaker 7: you can find a white oak, at least on our farms,
- 50:06Speaker 7: there's not a lot of white oaks, so I would
- 50:11Speaker 7: assume they are preferring the white oaks, But try to
- 50:15Speaker 7: find a white oak. Try to get tight to betting
- 50:19Speaker 7: would be my biggest tip, height to betting.
- 50:22Speaker 2: Find some white oaks. And when you mentioned hot sign,
- 50:25Speaker 2: you know, I think a lot of people could potentially
- 50:27Speaker 2: confuse that, what do you if you could paint real quickly,
- 50:31Speaker 2: what is hot sign in your mind that gets you
- 50:33Speaker 2: excited versus just some general dear sign.
- 50:37Speaker 3: Scrapes?
- 50:38Speaker 7: Actually, when this buck came in, which you know it's
- 50:42Speaker 7: it was opening day, which was September twenty seventh, and
- 50:45Speaker 7: he he came in. The first thing he did was
- 50:47Speaker 7: make a scrape at twenty five yards that he's already
- 50:50Speaker 7: you know, doing buck stuff.
- 50:53Speaker 3: So if you can find the scrape, and yeah, call
- 50:56Speaker 3: me crazy.
- 50:56Speaker 7: But the week before season actually I went out and
- 51:00Speaker 7: I made a couple of mock drapes here and there,
- 51:03Speaker 7: just to see if you would potentially hit those early seasons,
- 51:08Speaker 7: because with our history of the deer, we kind of
- 51:11Speaker 7: knew he would be around early season, like early early,
- 51:15Speaker 7: and then he kind of disappeared, like mid October into
- 51:19Speaker 7: the rut, and then it would come back late season.
- 51:23Speaker 7: So I was really hoping I would get him before
- 51:24Speaker 7: he leaves because I was afraid somebody else would shoot him.
- 51:28Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, that's it. Look, you made it happen. So
- 51:31Speaker 2: if you had to put a scale one to ten
- 51:33Speaker 2: for the next seven days, what would you put at ten? Bean?
- 51:36Speaker 2: Best week ever? One bean? I think I'm gonna seen
- 51:40Speaker 2: it out.
- 51:42Speaker 7: I definitely wouldn't sit it out. Like the weather conditions
- 51:47Speaker 7: were not ideal for opening day. I mean it was
- 51:50Speaker 7: eighty degrees, so I don't. Yeah, I mean I think
- 51:55Speaker 7: it just depends on Yeah, it can very soil like
- 52:00Speaker 7: if if you know where a year is betting, Uh,
- 52:04Speaker 7: nothing would keep me from going hunting, no matter the
- 52:07Speaker 7: conditions or time of the year. So I mean, for me,
- 52:11Speaker 7: if I was still hunting this buck and you asked
- 52:14Speaker 7: me that question, I'd give it like a six or seven.
- 52:18Speaker 3: Probably not.
- 52:20Speaker 7: It's not like perfect conditions, so it's not a ten,
- 52:23Speaker 7: but it's also not a one, so somewhere in the middle.
- 52:27Speaker 2: Fair enough, fair enough. Well, yeah, congratulations sac on an
- 52:31Speaker 2: incredible deer and I putting a ribbon on the top
- 52:35Speaker 2: after you know, multiple years of history. That's that's really special.
- 52:38Speaker 2: I hope you have been enjoying the moment and congrats
- 52:41Speaker 2: once again.
- 52:41Speaker 3: Oh I've been thank you, Thank you very much.
- 52:44Speaker 2: There you guys have it. Hope you guys have a
- 52:46Speaker 2: great week. We're going to see you next week here
- 52:48Speaker 2: for Reughfresh. And with this front, I have an anticipation
- 52:52Speaker 2: that there's going to be a variety of big bucks
- 52:54Speaker 2: that connect with hunters and their plant come together. So
- 52:57Speaker 2: I hope you guys tune in next week on Reugh Fresh.
- 53:00Speaker 2: We'll see you then.
