Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Joining me in the studio right now is the Chief
- 0:02Speaker 1: Fire Officer, Mark spain Good morning to you.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Good morning coatie Spainy.
- 0:06Speaker 1: I was meant to be catching up with Joshua Fisher,
- 0:08Speaker 1: but then I saw you outside the studio and thought, oh,
- 0:11Speaker 1: well there we go. We've got Spainy instead.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Absolutely, he's got errands to do all the good stuff.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Well, mate, I know that in preparation for Territory Day tomorrow,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services are obviously
- 0:24Speaker 1: getting out and making sure that Territorians do know what
- 0:27Speaker 1: they need to do to prepare to enjoy Territory Days
- 0:31Speaker 1: safely and responsibly. Now, what is the message really for
- 0:35Speaker 1: Territorians ahead of Territory Day tomorrow around fireworks.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Yeah, first and foremost, PFAS Media have worked with their
- 0:43Speaker 3: volunteer captains. Now I've put a couple of little snippets
- 0:45Speaker 3: up on their Facebook page, so if they want to
- 0:48Speaker 3: have a look of those.
- 0:49Speaker 2: The captains have done some great work of what to do.
- 0:52Speaker 3: But realistically what we want to do is if you
- 0:54Speaker 3: really follow the manufacturer's recommendations of how to set those
- 0:57Speaker 3: fireworks off, be prepared, have a cleared area, have some
- 1:00Speaker 3: sort of extinguishing agents, like a bucket of water or
- 1:03Speaker 3: a hose close by. And also what I'd also like
- 1:07Speaker 3: to do add is that you also have some sort
- 1:09Speaker 3: of first aid kit there in the unlikely event that
- 1:12Speaker 3: someone gets injured or burnt from one of those fireworks.
- 1:15Speaker 1: Now, what do you have to do if somebody does
- 1:17Speaker 1: get you know, suffer from an injury or gets you know,
- 1:21Speaker 1: I guess gets burned. What do people need to do
- 1:23Speaker 1: in the first instance, Yeah, I.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Just use the three C rule, Katie is cool.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Cover cover with an appropriate rapper to stop any infection
- 1:33Speaker 3: getting into the burn like lad rap is a very good,
- 1:35Speaker 3: good opportunity, and then call Core for assistance asap, and
- 1:39Speaker 3: then try and get that burn sort to.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's one of those hard ones.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Generally, everybody, well, I know, I try to let fireworks
- 1:47Speaker 1: off pretty safely on a bit of a nana when
- 1:49Speaker 1: it comes to safety around things like fireworks, But then
- 1:54Speaker 1: occasionally get a bit of a rogue one and you
- 1:57Speaker 1: think to yourself, oh, my goodness, if that ends up
- 1:59Speaker 1: hitting one of the kids or hitting somebody, it could
- 2:01Speaker 1: be quite dangerous.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I think every year after fireworks you talked to a
- 2:06Speaker 3: number of people and especially the medicals either the house.
- 2:08Speaker 2: How many injuries as a result of fireworks.
- 2:10Speaker 3: You know, you've got a combination of forty fireworks, you've
- 2:13Speaker 3: got inappropriate use of fireworks. Alcohol may be involved in
- 2:16Speaker 3: certain areas causing incidents. So we just really asked people
- 2:20Speaker 3: to be mindful of other people of where they're going
- 2:23Speaker 3: to let them off, and to report a triple zero
- 2:26Speaker 3: in the event something happens.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Now, how are we looking when it comes to the conditions,
- 2:30Speaker 1: because obviously last year our Territory Day was held much
- 2:33Speaker 1: sort of later in the year and the wind was
- 2:35Speaker 1: a real concern. There was an awful lot of fires.
- 2:38Speaker 1: I remember speaking to Josh Fisher the following day and
- 2:41Speaker 1: there was such a huge number of fires. What are
- 2:43Speaker 1: we expecting this year when it comes to those conditions.
- 2:46Speaker 3: Were last year we had about four hundred and fifty
- 2:48Speaker 3: odd fire reported across the Northern Territory. This year, How
- 2:53Speaker 3: glorious is this weather? That's cloud it's there could be
- 2:56Speaker 3: some rain slight chance of rome. We had rain last night,
- 3:00Speaker 3: be gusty winds coming through. So just be once again
- 3:03Speaker 3: careful how you use your fireworks. But we're expecting not
- 3:06Speaker 3: as horrendous conditions as we expected last year, so late
- 3:10Speaker 3: in the season.
- 3:10Speaker 1: That is good to hear it now. In terms of
- 3:13Speaker 1: the number of like how many how many people do
- 3:15Speaker 1: you have to sort of have on I guess when
- 3:17Speaker 1: it comes to something like this.
- 3:18Speaker 3: Yeah, generally Katie will double our career cruise to enhance cruise,
- 3:24Speaker 3: so that allows the rostered shift on to manage the
- 3:27Speaker 3: main major fire appliances to deal with structural fires, road
- 3:31Speaker 3: crash or any other core business that they do, and
- 3:33Speaker 3: the enhanced crews will go out in the grass fire
- 3:36Speaker 3: units and respond to all.
- 3:37Speaker 2: The local fires that pop up that are reported. Through
- 3:40Speaker 2: triple zero.
- 3:41Speaker 3: This year, we're struggling to fill the enhanced crew of such. However,
- 3:45Speaker 3: the volunteers are really stepped up, as they do every year.
- 3:48Speaker 3: They usually take the day off the next day because
- 3:50Speaker 3: they know it's going to be a long one, but
- 3:51Speaker 3: we also know it's going to be a Friday night,
- 3:53Speaker 3: so it's not we have to get the kids early
- 3:55Speaker 3: into bed. They were expecting a very late night early
- 3:59Speaker 3: our morning.
- 4:00Speaker 1: For all the fire actions, yeah, no doubt about it.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Where are some of there are there some locations where
- 4:05Speaker 1: you just absolutely cannot let fireworks off.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Yeah, they're in the council areas will let you know
- 4:10Speaker 3: where they can't be set off, So if you've probably
- 4:13Speaker 3: got onto their website, they'll have a clear area where
- 4:16Speaker 3: you can and cannot let it off. But the other
- 4:18Speaker 3: things too, is when you go down to the ables,
- 4:21Speaker 3: just don't put your used don't discard your used fireworks
- 4:24Speaker 3: into bins.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Wait till they cool down, and then once they're cool.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Just put them in, dispose of them correctly for the
- 4:32Speaker 3: council workers the next day. And also it avoids those
- 4:35Speaker 3: bin fires.
- 4:36Speaker 2: How busy does it get for you guys?
- 4:37Speaker 1: It must get pretty crazy on territory day, does it.
- 4:40Speaker 3: Well, if you're talking to my Jessic operators, the comms operators,
- 4:44Speaker 3: they have no hair left by the end of the night.
- 4:47Speaker 3: They are sensational the way they coordinate. We'll have two
- 4:50Speaker 3: officers in there with the Joint Control Center and we'll
- 4:55Speaker 3: take out priorities. Because we're running his cruise bit smaller
- 5:00Speaker 3: than normal, we will prioritize those calls.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I'll tell you what. Good luck to all
- 5:06Speaker 1: the fireries and all of the volunteers of course for
- 5:10Speaker 1: tomorrow night, and please everybody just be as safe as
- 5:13Speaker 1: possible so that you know, we don't end up with fires.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Everywhere, absolutely catally and really a really good location is
- 5:19Speaker 3: down at Lake Alexander to observe across the harbor.
- 5:23Speaker 2: You'll see Fanny Bay go off.
- 5:24Speaker 3: You'll see like Alexander, large groups gather there and you'll
- 5:27Speaker 3: be able to see their fireworks go off as well.
- 5:29Speaker 3: So if you knew to town and you need advantage,
- 5:31Speaker 3: point like Alexander could.
- 5:32Speaker 2: Be the spot.
- 5:33Speaker 1: Yeah. Well we're going to catch up with in t
- 5:34Speaker 1: major events as well in around twenty minutes time and
- 5:36Speaker 1: we'll find out a bit more about the Territory Day
- 5:39Speaker 1: celebrations that they've got lined up. Mark Spain, chief Fire
- 5:42Speaker 1: Officer for the Northern Territory. Always good to catch up
- 5:44Speaker 1: with you. Thank you.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Likewise, Katie
