- 0:11Hello friends, my name is Sean Conry and I am so delighted that
- 0:18you have tucked on play and have invited me into your day so that
- 0:23you and I can take this moment in this chapter, a day Bible
- 0:27reading podcast to read another chapter of the Bible together.
- 0:32As you know, we are reading through the book of Acts at the
- 0:34moment and we have reached one of those days where things shift
- 0:40a little in a new direction and this is a direction which will
- 0:44last well frankly for most of the New Testament.
- 0:47Today we see the commissioning of Barnabas and Saul.
- 0:52And now the story starts to really focus in on the mission
- 0:57work of this man Saul, who becomes Paul.
- 1:00And he will, as you know, become a hulking figure in the New
- 1:05Testament as he writes so many letters of encouragement and
- 1:09instruction to the churches in that time and place.
- 1:14So as we begin to hear about His work, let us take ourselves back
- 1:19these 2000 odd years and open our hearts to what the Spirit
- 1:24has to share with us as we read together Acts Chapter 13.
- 1:40Among the prophets and teachers of the church at Antioch of
- 1:43Syria were Barnabas Simon, called the black man Lucius from
- 1:49Sirene Manayan, the childhood companion of King Herod, Antipas
- 1:55and Saul. One day, as these men were
- 1:58worshipping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said,
- 2:02appoint Barnabas and Saul for the special work to which I have
- 2:07called them. So after more fasting and prayer
- 2:10the men laid their hands on them and sent them on their way.
- 2:15So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit.
- 2:19They went down to the seaport of Solucia and then sailed for the
- 2:23island of Cyprus. There, in the town of Salamis,
- 2:28they went to the Jewish synagogues and preached the word
- 2:30of God. John Mark went with them as
- 2:33their assistant. Afterward, they traveled from
- 2:36town to town across the entire island until finally they
- 2:40reached Pathos, where they met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet
- 2:45named Bar Jesus. He had attached himself to the
- 2:48governor, Sergius Paulus, who is an intelligent man.
- 2:53The governor invited Barnabas and soul to visit him, for he
- 2:57wanted to hear the word of God. But Elemis the sorcerer, as his
- 3:02name means in Greek, interfered and urged the governor to pay no
- 3:06attention to what Barnabas and soul said.
- 3:09He was trying to keep the governor from believing soul,
- 3:12also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit, and he
- 3:17looked the sorcerer in the eye. Then he said, You son of the
- 3:22devil, full of every sort of deceit and fraud, and enemy of
- 3:26all that is good, will you never stop perverting the true ways of
- 3:31the Lord? Watch now, for the Lord has laid
- 3:35his hand of punishment upon you, and you will be struck blind.
- 3:39You will not see the sunlight for some time.
- 3:43Instantly mist and darkness came over the man's eyes, and he
- 3:47began groping around, begging for someone to take his hand and
- 3:50lead him. When the governor saw what had
- 3:52happened, he became a believer, for he was astonished at the
- 3:56teaching about the Lord. Paul and his companions then
- 4:00left pathos by ship for Pamphilia, landing at the port
- 4:04town of Perga. There John Mark left them and
- 4:08returned to Jerusalem. But Paul and Barnabas traveled
- 4:11inland to Antioch of Persidia. On the Sabbath they went to the
- 4:16synagogue for the service. After the usual readings from
- 4:20the books of Moses and the prophets, those in charge of the
- 4:23service sent them this message. Brothers, if you have any word
- 4:28of encouragement for the people, come and give it.
- 4:32So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started
- 4:36speaking. Men of Israel, he said.
- 4:39And you, God fearing Gentiles, listen to me.
- 4:43The God of this nation of Israel chose our ancestors and made
- 4:47them multiply and grow strong during their stay in Egypt.
- 4:51Then, with a powerful arm, he led them out of their slavery.
- 4:55He put up with them through 40 years of wandering in the
- 4:58wilderness. Then he destroyed seven nations
- 5:01in Canaan and gave their land to Israel as an inheritance.
- 5:06All this took about 450 years. After that, God gave them judges
- 5:12to rule until the time of Samuel the prophet.
- 5:15Then the people begged for a king, and God gave them Saul,
- 5:19son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, who reigned for 40
- 5:23years. But God removed Saul and
- 5:25replaced him with David, a man about whom God said, I have
- 5:30found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart.
- 5:35He will do everything I want him to do, and it is one of King
- 5:40David's descendants, Jesus, who is God's promised savior of
- 5:44Israel. Before he came, John the Baptist
- 5:48preached that all the people of Israel needed to repent of their
- 5:51sins and turn to God and be baptized.
- 5:54As John was finishing his ministry, he asked, do you think
- 5:58I am the Messiah? No, I am not.
- 6:01But he is coming soon, and I'm not even worthy to be his slave
- 6:05and untie the sandals on his feet.
- 6:08Brothers, you sons of Abraham, and also you, God fearing
- 6:12Gentiles, this message of salvation has been sent to us.
- 6:17The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognize
- 6:20Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about.
- 6:22Instead they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the
- 6:27prophet's words that are read every Sabbath.
- 6:30They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked
- 6:34Pilot to have him killed anyway. When they had done all that the
- 6:38prophecies said about him, they took him down from the cross and
- 6:42placed him in a tomb. But God raised him from the
- 6:45dead, and over a period of many days he appeared to those who
- 6:49had gone with him from Galilee to Jerusalem.
- 6:53They are now his witnesses to the people of Israel.
- 6:57And now we are here to bring you this good news.
- 7:02The promise was made to our ancestors and God has now
- 7:06fulfilled it for us, their descendants, by raising Jesus.
- 7:11This is what the 2nd Psalm says about Jesus.
- 7:14You are my son. Today I have become your father,
- 7:19for God has promised to raise him from the dead, not leaving
- 7:22him to rot in the grave. He said I will give you the
- 7:26sacred blessing I promised to David.
- 7:29Another Psalm explains it more fully.
- 7:31You will not allow your holy 1 to rot in the grave.
- 7:35This is not a reference to David.
- 7:37For after David had done the will of God in his own
- 7:40generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors, and
- 7:44his body decayed. No, it was a reference to
- 7:47someone else, someone whom God raised and whose body did not
- 7:53decay. Brothers, listen.
- 7:56We are here to proclaim that through this man, Jesus, there
- 8:00is forgiveness for your sins. Everyone who believes in him is
- 8:05made right in God's sight, something the Law of Moses could
- 8:08never do. Be careful.
- 8:11Don't let the prophet's words apply to you, For they said,
- 8:15look you mockers, be amazed and die.
- 8:19For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn't
- 8:23believe even if someone told you about it.
- 8:27As Paul and Barnabas left the synagogue that day, the people
- 8:30begged them to speak about these things again the next week.
- 8:34Many Jews and devout converts to Judaism followed Paul and
- 8:38Barnabas, and the two men urged them to continue to rely on the
- 8:42grace of God. The following week, almost the
- 8:46entire city turned out to hear them preach the word of the
- 8:49Lord. But when some of the Jews saw
- 8:52the crowds, they were jealous, so they slandered Paul and
- 8:56argued against whatever he said. Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out
- 9:00boldly and declared it was necessary that we first preached
- 9:04the word of God to you, Jews. But since you have rejected it
- 9:08and judged yourselves unworthy of eternal life, we will offer
- 9:13it to the Gentiles. For the Lord gave us this
- 9:15command when he said, I have made you a light to the Gentiles
- 9:19to bring salvation to the farthest corners of the earth.
- 9:23When the Gentiles heard this, I have a very glad and thank the
- 9:27Lord for His message. And all who were chosen for
- 9:30eternal life became believers. So the Lord's message spread
- 9:34throughout that region. Then the Jews stirred up the
- 9:38influential religious women and the leaders of the city, and
- 9:42they incited a mob against Paul and Barnabas and ran them out of
- 9:46town. So they shook the dust from
- 9:49their feet as a sign of rejection and went to the town
- 9:53of Iconium. And the believers were filled
- 9:56with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
- 10:09How good are you, God? So, so incredibly good, beyond
- 10:14anything that our human minds can imagine.
- 10:18And what I love about this reading is that when people get
- 10:21faith in you, they respond with joy.
- 10:25Ignite in us that joy of you and our lives with you, with your
- 10:32spirit dwelling in us, saved, showered by your grace.
- 10:37Oh what a joyous thing that is. Help that not to grow stale in
- 10:42us, but to be fanned into a flame that would burn.
- 10:46Burn with joy, burn with love. And our hearts can be bubbling
- 10:52over knowing that you have saved us, that we are secure, dearly
- 10:57loved children of a Heavenly Father, and that as this joy
- 11:02fills our hearts, that we can shine this joy to the world
- 11:07around us that so desperately needs it.
- 11:12You are awesome and we love you, and we experience this joy, and
- 11:19we pray that you would just magnify it in us so that we can
- 11:24be a force for good for your Kingdom in this world.
- 11:28And we pray all of this in the name of Jesus.
- 11:33Amen.
