- 0:58Speaker 1: a message up to thirty seconds, sing hey, I think
- 1:00Speaker 1: the college football overtime system is awful, or hey I
- 1:05Speaker 1: think it's good. I think it'll work out. You know,
- 1:07Speaker 1: whatever whatever is on your mind. We're happy to listen
- 1:12Speaker 1: to you and to go along with what you're saying,
- 1:17Speaker 1: and they have a fought on and a comment on it. Okay,
- 1:19Speaker 1: so it came brought it up. It went four overtimes.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I remember, this is not the longest overtime game Texas
- 1:25Speaker 1: A and it was played. In fact, it was their
- 1:28Speaker 1: game on Thanksgiving weekend against LSU what I think three
- 1:31Speaker 1: years ago, that went seven overtimes. That was kind of
- 1:35Speaker 1: the final straw. There had already been some movement behind
- 1:39Speaker 1: trying to find a different way to settle tie games,
- 1:45Speaker 1: and it was agreed upon afterwards. What they would do
- 1:47Speaker 1: is they would start like they had been doing in overtime.
- 1:50Speaker 1: You start from the twenty five yard line and teams
- 1:54Speaker 1: can try to go in and score, and if it's
- 1:56Speaker 1: still tied, then you would go to a secon overtime.
- 2:00Speaker 1: But the second one you were compelled to go for
- 2:03Speaker 1: two on that and that second overtime, and if you
- 2:06Speaker 1: were still tied, then starting on the third overtime, you
- 2:10Speaker 1: would be forced to go for it two point conversion.
- 2:15Speaker 1: It's kind of like penalty kicks and soccer. That's basically
- 2:18Speaker 1: what it boiled down to. So it seems like we
- 2:21Speaker 1: get our strongest reactions to this when there is a
- 2:25Speaker 1: game that ends like what Texas A and m Auburn
- 2:30Speaker 1: did the other night. He went four overtimes, and you
- 2:33Speaker 1: heard from both sides or people saying it's ridiculous. Way
- 2:35Speaker 1: you can't just have to play a game. You cannot
- 2:38Speaker 1: in a game like that. Then the other side saying,
- 2:42Speaker 1: what are you going to do? You can't have seven
- 2:44Speaker 1: overtimes again, That's why it has been settled the way
- 2:48Speaker 1: it has been settled. There are people that like the
- 2:50Speaker 1: NFL overtime rule where if one team gets a touchdown,
- 2:53Speaker 1: it's over. If one team gets a field goal, the
- 2:56Speaker 1: other team gets a possession it Okay, so this thing,
- 3:00Speaker 1: let's break this down individually. How would you, first of all,
- 3:03Speaker 1: settle the NFL overtime rule?
- 3:05Speaker 3: How would you use you get both teams possession on
- 3:09Speaker 3: the opponents?
- 3:11Speaker 2: I think forty yard.
- 3:13Speaker 3: Line, okay, each get a possession, possession, just go from there.
- 3:19Speaker 2: Okay, okay.
- 3:21Speaker 1: And if say it took a team seven plays to
- 3:24Speaker 1: get in and they did score touchdown from the forty,
- 3:26Speaker 1: and the other team needed six plays to get in
- 3:29Speaker 1: and they did from the forty.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Then you go back and do it all over again. Yeah.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I think so Okay.
- 3:36Speaker 1: So in other words, you'd get rid of the clock,
- 3:38Speaker 1: which would mean there would be no more tie games. Yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 1: if that were the case, unless you said, hey, you
- 3:43Speaker 1: get one possession and if you're still even, then it
- 3:46Speaker 1: finishes as a tie.
- 3:47Speaker 2: I think ties are just very stupid.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Okay, just still have ties, Like, come on, okay, what
- 3:53Speaker 3: are we doing here at Goodell?
- 3:54Speaker 1: Okay, all right, it's competition to many the other the
- 3:57Speaker 1: ones decide all that they do that, but the owners
- 4:01Speaker 1: are part of the competition committee, and they answered to
- 4:03Speaker 1: Goodell or Goodell answers to them. Okay, college football, it's fine,
- 4:08Speaker 1: don't change it, don't change it. Yeah, so they're going
- 4:11Speaker 1: for twos starting on the third every time. You're good
- 4:13Speaker 1: with fine, Okay, I like the old way, but I
- 4:17Speaker 1: understand the player's safety stuff and all that, So I
- 4:20Speaker 1: think this is a pretty good format.
- 4:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 4:23Speaker 1: When I was in high school, this was in the
- 4:26Speaker 1: late seventies, it first started. They brought up with the system.
- 4:29Speaker 1: And I don't know if they still do this system.
- 4:31Speaker 1: If they did it when you were in high school,
- 4:33Speaker 1: how do you recall how you did overtime in high school?
- 4:36Speaker 1: When you were in high school, I.
- 4:37Speaker 3: Think my high school ever played in an overtime game?
- 4:39Speaker 2: Were they not good? They're fine?
- 4:41Speaker 3: Oh okay, all right, But it just wasn't glued into
- 4:43Speaker 3: high school football North Carolina that.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It's pretty good. It's not.
- 4:48Speaker 1: It's not Texas and tell you that, but it's pretty
- 4:50Speaker 1: good high school for anyway, when I was in high school,
- 4:54Speaker 1: the way that they brought and I saw. The reason
- 4:56Speaker 1: why I thought about this is I saw somebody's suggestion
- 5:00Speaker 1: on social media, and I think it was on the
- 5:03Speaker 1: athletic and I think they were trying. They the person
- 5:07Speaker 1: who wrote this might have been thinking they were coming
- 5:08Speaker 1: up with an original idea. And it's not original. It's
- 5:12Speaker 1: exactly what we did in North Carolina in the late seventies.
- 5:15Speaker 1: Four downs from the ten yard line.
- 5:19Speaker 2: That's it.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Four downs if you score, the other team has four downs.
- 5:23Speaker 1: If it's still tied, you do it again. But you
- 5:25Speaker 1: do it from the ten yard line. You don't have
- 5:26Speaker 1: as many plays, and you might have a chance to
- 5:29Speaker 1: get it done quicker. It also might compel a team.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Let's say they're at the four or the three and
- 5:35Speaker 1: it's come down the fourth down.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Do you kick the field goal?
- 5:38Speaker 1: If you had the first possession or do you risk
- 5:41Speaker 1: going for it four downs from the ten.
- 5:44Speaker 2: That's not a bad idea. I don't know that that is.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And then I saw Scott Van Pelt going off on
- 5:50Speaker 1: the whole thing, you know, and he said, start at
- 5:51Speaker 1: the fifty, begainning if you started.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that makes more sense because I think why
- 5:57Speaker 3: I did, why I say forty to forty five is
- 6:00Speaker 3: because you get a few yards. I mean you're already
- 6:03Speaker 3: if you start at midfield. I mean technically you might
- 6:06Speaker 3: be in Brandon Arby's fieldal range. Yeah, but college kickers,
- 6:09Speaker 3: you have no idea.
- 6:10Speaker 2: Right.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Also, you could have protracted drives after they've played four
- 6:15Speaker 1: of course, that's why they went away from the four
- 6:20Speaker 1: downs of the twenty five when they played seven overtimes
- 6:24Speaker 1: between Texas A and M and LSU. I don't know
- 6:27Speaker 1: if there's a there's a good way. I do think this.
- 6:30Speaker 1: I don't think you put a clock on it, because
- 6:32Speaker 1: if you put a clock on it, then you're bringing
- 6:35Speaker 1: in the specter of the game ending in a tie,
- 6:38Speaker 1: and nobody wants that. So so I'm with you on
- 6:42Speaker 1: the NFL. I don't think we should have tie games.
- 6:44Speaker 1: But you know they're not gonna they don't want to
- 6:46Speaker 1: risk injury beyond that. So I'd be for four downs
- 6:51Speaker 1: from the ten yard line. I think you might, you know,
- 6:55Speaker 1: you know, but if teams are really scoring really easily,
- 6:57Speaker 1: they'd probably be able to continue to score from the
- 6:59Speaker 1: ten line. Maybe you can compel them to go for two.
- 7:02Speaker 1: Just go for two, not just a string of two
- 7:04Speaker 1: point conversions. Just make him start having to go for
- 7:07Speaker 1: two afterwards.
- 7:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I think if we went to that in third over
- 7:11Speaker 3: time instead of the two point conversion of the ten
- 7:13Speaker 3: yard line, I think that that'd be good.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 7:15Speaker 1: So anyway, all right, so there's some thoughts on that
- 7:21Speaker 1: Alabama out of the SEC Championship mix, and most would
- 7:27Speaker 1: say it's amazing to read. Some people were just refused
- 7:31Speaker 1: to just don't want to let go of it. I
- 7:33Speaker 1: know you joked about a three year or four loss
- 7:34Speaker 1: Alabama team getting in and here we.
- 7:36Speaker 3: Are, Craig ESPN. Yeah, with an article this morning could
- 7:40Speaker 3: have three loss Alabama team just a college football playoffs.
- 7:43Speaker 1: You just knew that that was probably gonna have put
- 7:46Speaker 1: it this way. The only way I could possibly see
- 7:49Speaker 1: that happening is a lot of carnage this weekend and
- 7:54Speaker 1: in the conference championship games, although you're a limited amount
- 7:56Speaker 1: of damage you can have left remaining in the conference
- 7:59Speaker 1: championship games. But uh, it's not just that Alabama's lost
- 8:05Speaker 1: three times, it's who they've lost to.
- 8:10Speaker 2: You know, if people are going to bag.
- 8:12Speaker 1: On Texas for quote unquote beating Vanderbilt a lightweight, then
- 8:17Speaker 1: Alabama has to be given every bit as much discredit
- 8:21Speaker 1: for losing to them. And and you know, they lost
- 8:26Speaker 1: to Tennessee, which was a good team instill in the MiGs.
- 8:30Speaker 1: But to lose to a team that was at the
- 8:33Speaker 1: bottom of the Big twelve at Big twelve the SEC standings, Oklahoma, No,
- 8:38Speaker 1: you got to be penalized for that. So I think
- 8:44Speaker 1: I read it where somebody else said at some point
- 8:46Speaker 1: and if people want to get on Texas and they
- 8:49Speaker 1: say the schedule strength isn't there, Uh, here's some facts.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Here's some facts.
- 8:55Speaker 1: These are actual numbers, So you know what you want
- 8:59Speaker 1: their strength, This schedule is actually thirty eighth. It's not awful.
- 9:04Speaker 1: It's not ninety. It's not Indiana as one hundred and
- 9:07Speaker 1: six or whatever it was. It's thirty eighth. Not only
- 9:09Speaker 1: that Texas owns more wins over teams that are currently
- 9:14Speaker 1: Bowl eligible than any in the country.
- 9:17Speaker 2: They have seven over teams that are Bowl eligible.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Now, make of that what you will, but at least
- 9:25Speaker 1: that's a number that's accurate. It's not an opinion based
- 9:29Speaker 1: on a poll, so you know whatever. In the case
- 9:34Speaker 1: the long words, it really doesn't matter that much right now.
- 9:36Speaker 1: If they beat Texas A and M. A and M
- 9:38Speaker 1: on Saturday, A, we know they're in the SEC Championship
- 9:42Speaker 1: game and B I'd say they're pretty much a lock
- 9:44Speaker 1: to be in the playoff. Even if they lose to Georgia.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It's two losses at that point to a good football team,
- 9:50Speaker 1: the same one bow times. So probably I'd say there's
- 9:53Speaker 1: a real good shot there in if they win this Saturday.
- 9:55Speaker 1: If they lose, different issue, got to see what else happens.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Because A and M is in the position now where
- 10:01Speaker 1: they have to win out to get in. They've got
- 10:02Speaker 1: three losses right now, they're not getting in at four losses.
- 10:07Speaker 2: So I know what you're thinking.
- 10:09Speaker 1: What happens if Texas loses to A and M, and
- 10:11Speaker 1: an A and M loses to Georgia, the Texas who
- 10:16Speaker 1: lost to A M get in over A and M.
- 10:20Speaker 1: I would say that's the two minus one theory. They
- 10:22Speaker 1: have one lost to A and M, but they are
- 10:24Speaker 1: two games ahead of them in terms of fewer losses,
- 10:27Speaker 1: so they're probably going to get in. That's that's not me.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I'm telling you what. The committee is valuing on wins
- 10:35Speaker 1: and losses. So that'll bring about a bunch of grumbling
- 10:39Speaker 1: and you know, moaning and all that kind of stuff.
- 10:41Speaker 1: But it wouldn't be the first time a team got
- 10:42Speaker 1: in over another team after losing to them. And you know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: during the season, we're in a conference championship game. It's
- 10:49Speaker 1: happened before, it'll happen again. But Texas can avoid that
- 10:54Speaker 1: with a win on Saturday, and then it takes that
- 10:56Speaker 1: out of the equation and it pretty much locks it
- 10:59Speaker 1: up that Texas and Georgia are both going to wind
- 11:02Speaker 1: up in the playoff. Ole Miss has played its way
- 11:05Speaker 1: out of it. Lane Kiffin last week, let's talk about coach,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you don't want to play in that SEC championship game.
- 11:11Speaker 1: You lose, you're out. The risk reward isn't good. Well,
- 11:13Speaker 1: he doesn't have to worry about that anymore. He'll be
- 11:16Speaker 1: in the Citrus or the Gate or one of the
- 11:19Speaker 1: others and it's not downgrading any of those bowl games.
- 11:21Speaker 1: By the way, Texas could wind up in one of those.
- 11:24Speaker 1: I'm just saying they're not going to be in the
- 11:25Speaker 1: SEC Championship and they're not going to be in the playoff.
- 11:28Speaker 1: And I'd say it's about ninety seven percent certain that
- 11:33Speaker 1: Alabama's not getting in either in the playoff. I only
- 11:37Speaker 1: say ninety seven percent because it's Alabama. And if you
- 11:39Speaker 1: had another crazy, crazy, crazy weekend, who knows, but what's
- 11:44Speaker 1: ironic And a lot of folks have said this the
- 11:47Speaker 1: weird stuff that happened in the SEC ole miss losing
- 11:50Speaker 1: to Florida, Alabama losing to Oklahoma, Texas A and m
- 11:56Speaker 1: losing Oliver you know who that helped Indiana. Yeah, they
- 12:01Speaker 1: lost to Ohio State and they had about one hundred
- 12:04Speaker 1: and fifty one yards total offense, got thumped, scored the
- 12:07Speaker 1: first touchdown and then the last touchdown.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That was about it. But you only have the one loss.
- 12:13Speaker 1: They are really good Ohio State team and they're not
- 12:16Speaker 1: going to play in the Big Ten Championship. They just
- 12:20Speaker 1: have to make sure their biggest worry is the ACC
- 12:25Speaker 1: because if SMU and Miami both win this week, play
- 12:31Speaker 1: in the ACC Championship and SMU wins that game, Indiana's
- 12:37Speaker 1: probably out because then SMU and Miami both get in
- 12:40Speaker 1: at that point. But it's going to be interesting to
- 12:43Speaker 1: see and the Big Twelve may well have played its
- 12:46Speaker 1: way right into the first round and no buye that's
- 12:51Speaker 1: what happens with the BYU lost Arizona State. What a
- 12:53Speaker 1: crazy thing that was with the fans storming the field twice,
- 12:58Speaker 1: yet that you.
- 12:59Speaker 3: See they was on a State student that was hiding
- 13:01Speaker 3: in the medical tent. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, that's good.
- 13:03Speaker 1: That was pretty pretty clever thinking, pretty clever thinking.
- 13:06Speaker 2: While it worked.
- 13:10Speaker 1: And then Kansas beating Colorado, so dion Mania will kind
- 13:16Speaker 1: of die die down a little bit. They're still mathematically
- 13:18Speaker 1: alive to get in the Big Twelve Championship. But if
- 13:21Speaker 1: i a state which was able to creep past Utah,
- 13:24Speaker 1: if i was State win's Farmageddon this week, if they
- 13:28Speaker 1: beat Kansas State and Arizona State wins the Territorial Cup,
- 13:32Speaker 1: which they probably will and beats Arizona, you and if
- 13:34Speaker 1: Iowa stayed against Arizona State in the Big Twelve Championship,
- 13:39Speaker 1: and with Boise continuing on a rise, there's a decent
- 13:42Speaker 1: chance the Boise will be past both of those teams
- 13:45Speaker 1: and get a buye then and then the Big twelve
- 13:48Speaker 1: champ will have to play in.
- 13:49Speaker 2: The first round.
- 13:50Speaker 1: So that's kind of what's on the table, and that's
- 13:53Speaker 1: kind of what's a mess right now.
- 13:56Speaker 2: Up next, we'll hear more from Longwarren
- 13:57Speaker 1: Said coach Steve sarkisian Wan will continue on sports Rady
- 13:59Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone and the iHeartRadio app.
