- 0:00Hmm, Well, Jurny Glory podcast, Braska Falls the Colorado thirty eight to
- 0:24fourteen. I'm Hunter's arbor, Nicky here with just da code of free tag.
- 0:28Austin is out on vacation, limited cell service, or he just truly
- 0:33does not want to talk after Saturday, Dak, what are we gonna do?
- 0:42I I really don't know. You're really screwed a quarterback. That's that's
- 0:50the main point. Yeah, and you've been saying that from day one.
- 0:57I didn't need this bad I did. I mean, yeah, it definitely
- 1:03has not been good. But this is not even close to being competent,
- 1:11I would say, And I think that's going to be the main topic of
- 1:15conversation and has been here since the game has ended. Before we keep going,
- 1:23I just got to get my rant off the top. So every Sunday
- 1:26I'm going to give my little two minute rant the two minute drill. So
- 1:33I will do that now before we just start jumping into all sorts of stuff
- 1:37about this game. So timer ready, and we're off. So after Saturday,
- 1:49the mood was depressed. I can't believe I fell into the trap of
- 1:55believing that we could win a football game against a pretty good team, not
- 2:00saying Colorado's world beaders, but they definitely we're better than us and ended up
- 2:08kicking our ass. And unfortunately we can't even get a fucking handoff. We
- 2:15can't. We can't hand the ball off. We can't. We can't take
- 2:17a snap anymore. So we can spend all the time we want. You're
- 2:21talking about how much talent we have or scheme we're trying to run, or
- 2:27style and play grade, it doesn't matter. We can't complete a snap.
- 2:30That's what sixth graders need to learn how to do. It's seventh graders,
- 2:34and we just turned the ball over when we try to do that. So,
- 2:38yeah, did you look okay? Again? For a quarter and a
- 2:39half, we did, We looked we were in control of that game.
- 2:45But Matt Rule says it, it's a four quarter football game, and we
- 2:50did not. We were not the better team through four quarters because we simply
- 2:54cannot just complete a snap. That's like the main thing, like grade elementary
- 3:00stuff. We can't do that. So I've made a lots of words,
- 3:05and I don't know where we go from here. And the fact that apparently
- 3:08it wasn't even considered to put in a backup tells you where our backups are
- 3:12eating at at the quarterback position. So we are in a world of purt
- 3:16right now. Luckily we have two games to go. I am not giving
- 3:21up on this coaching staff. I am not giving up on what we have.
- 3:24But was this eye opening? And I'm just pissed at myself for believing
- 3:30again that we could win a game like this because harmly that's not how I
- 3:34think. But I did not doing it again. Get me Northern Illinois money
- 3:37line on Saturday, loving it go big read you're already you're already going on
- 3:44the Illinois money line, baby money line. I know not, I mean
- 3:50not really, but that the thought of all of that was my head.
- 3:55Like I was actually sad, like I was after the Minnesota game. It
- 4:00was like speechless this game. I was like, dang it, I actually
- 4:03believed and thought we would win by doing a lot of the positive things that
- 4:09we saw against Minnesota, and I thought we started doing that. But ultimately
- 4:13we're just not a good football team. Deck We just don't like I mean,
- 4:18we can talk about Jeff Sims all we want, but we still lack
- 4:23receivers. We still lack guys that can just make a play on defense,
- 4:28and I thought our defense played phenomenal. They played so well for three quarters
- 4:32of that game. I mean, we made Colorado's offense look like, hey,
- 4:38we're a big ten West defense, We're a big ten defense, like
- 4:41come at us. But we could not sustain that. And yeah, I
- 4:45get that it falls a lot on the offense, and it just looked like
- 4:48we almost gave up and did we get tired? Maybe, But what do
- 4:55we want to see. We want to see in the fourth quarter how we
- 4:57respond. We were down thirty eight to seven against Colorado. I mean,
- 5:01that's just embarrassing. I don't care what how you want to analyze the game.
- 5:04That's the score. It was thirty eight to seven, thirty eight or
- 5:10thirty six to seven, whatever the hell it was. I don't know.
- 5:12We were we weren't in the game. I don't I don't know how scar
- 5:16fans do it. It's gonna be torture. And that's that's why I try
- 5:23to set my expectation level so low all the time, and I still I'm
- 5:27back to it. I think I got the most hyped I've gotten in a
- 5:29while after some of the things we saw it in Minnesota. But now it's
- 5:33back to okay, like we're a four win football team. We have to
- 5:38remember that in Colorado. Props to the way that Dion has come in and
- 5:42done what he's done through two games like that is impressive. Deon can do
- 5:46it because it's Dion. Matt Rule can't do it that way. Maybe other
- 5:50people can. That's one point I want to get to here down the road
- 5:55is like how long do we give a long rebuild in today's day and age,
- 6:00Like, let's just ask you that now. Like in today's day and
- 6:04age with nil with recruiting, with the transfer portal, the traditional rebuild coaches,
- 6:12which is a guy like Matt Rule, Like, is that still the
- 6:15best option to go with? That's coach? And once again, I'm not
- 6:17saying that Matt Rule can't get it done. I don't have belief in him,
- 6:20but clearly what Dion's doing at Colorado is evident of that. And I
- 6:26don't think he's the only one. I think Lane Kiffin, now you can
- 6:29say what you want, we're there at now. He kind of had did
- 6:31some good things when he went to Old Myths and some of these other coaches
- 6:35that are get programs going faster because of their name and their ability to bring
- 6:41guys in. Is that the way to like look five to ten years in
- 6:44the road, Is that better? You're you should probably take a year off
- 6:50of his rebuild, giving him time just for picking Jeff Sims over Kasey Thompson.
- 6:56He should lose a year just for that alone. Okay, I don't.
- 7:01I don't know what he was seeing there. But also you got to
- 7:04give him. He's a rebuild guy, so you got to give him five
- 7:11to seven years. I'd say at least five to seven like doing what like
- 7:18winning three or four games in year four? No it, so'll say you
- 7:24win, he's winning three or four games by year three. Still you sit
- 7:28him down that year and you say, hey, you gotta win eight nine
- 7:31games this year or else you're done. Kind of like a Brian Ferns thing.
- 7:34And in his contract you don't want to hear night games. You're done.
- 7:40And I don't mind that because I think that's how a lot of just
- 7:44college football fans in general think about coaching decisions. Is a quota or a
- 7:49mark that you have to hit in order to keep your job, And I
- 7:54don't I think that can be useful. I also think it's sometimes it may
- 7:59not depending on the situation. And that came up with Frost all the time
- 8:03too, was we do we say you have to do this or quote unquote
- 8:09we're seeing progress. So as long as we're seeing progress, we're okay.
- 8:11But the word progress can go all sorts of different ways depending on who's evaluating
- 8:18it. I actually am with you. I think at some point there does
- 8:20need to be bottom line, like we need to see results. What matters,
- 8:24what ultimately matters in the end. What are people looking at? It's
- 8:28how many wins you get and eventually can you win a championship. So we're
- 8:35here with coach rule, and I would say through two games, it's been
- 8:39two games, two games whatever. We've played Minnesota, who's a traditional Big
- 8:45ten West, not powerhouse, but a good football team, and take all
- 8:50the emotion and the rivalry out of it. A one off, unique Colorado
- 8:56team that brought in Dion Sanders and brought in a bunch of these really recruits
- 9:00and flip them around and we got our asses kicked five. Okay, is
- 9:05what we're doing. Going to build what we currently have and get us back
- 9:15to a ball game. That's the first step. And you mentioned the Jeff
- 9:20Sims day, Dak, You've told us he's not a good quarterback. I
- 9:26guess how would you evaluate? What would you say to a Husker fan?
- 9:31Since you're technically not one, What would you say to a Husker fan?
- 9:33Right now? We got ten games left bench? Jim ben him, Okay,
- 9:43I was I was just talking a couple of weeks, long time listener.
- 9:46He I said, dude, I'm dead serious here. If you ran
- 9:50the Wildcat every single play, I think you win that game. He lost
- 9:54that game for you Wildcat with a running back. Yep, you don't.
- 9:58If you're in that play, no quarterback, that game, no quarterback and
- 10:01all, you would have won. And because what did he give him?
- 10:07Yes, Austin's one comment to that, he said that he wanted us to
- 10:11say. Here's his end quotes. All I have to say is rule preaches
- 10:15accountability. He benched Grant after a fumble last week, and if sim starts
- 10:20next week, I will be disappointed, end to quote. And this is
- 10:24right along these lines of what do you do with a guy like Jeff Sins
- 10:28Because watching that game, and I'm even trying to think back, I'm trying
- 10:33to give him credit, like and support him and his run or the touchdown
- 10:39that we had, Like that's what we need to see out right, Yeah
- 10:43where the first half? Well, yes, I want to get to that
- 10:46too, because that's a great point. That's what we need to see out
- 10:48of Jeff Sins. We need to see him make plays because I still think,
- 10:54as sad as it is, he's probably still our best playmaker on the
- 10:58field. Like he's got the athleticism and the stature to make plays. And
- 11:05unfortunately it's like the simplest, dumbest things that happens that cost us. I
- 11:13mean, huge plays on drives. Like it's not like oh, a little
- 11:16mistake like you might make in a basketball game, like a mislay up or
- 11:20like these are like catastrophic things that just flipped the game around and like what
- 11:28do you do? Because in my mind, I was like, yeah,
- 11:33we need to we need to try something else, right, Like, there's
- 11:35one thing that the reason why we're down thirteen nothing a halftime. There's one
- 11:39reason and it literally was just him like fumbling the ball in the pit.
- 11:45Like it's like you we could not catch a snap. I don't know something.
- 11:50In my head, I'm like, okay, so if anybody else was
- 11:52in there, we'd be fine. Right. Well, then as I'm sitting
- 11:56watching the game, we're like, okay, well so now we're gonna put
- 12:01Hinrich Harberg in there. Chubba Bertie like, which he he got hurt,
- 12:07didn't he That's why they pulled him? Who damns? Yeah, he might
- 12:13have tweaked something. Also the point of the game where the game was over.
- 12:16I guess I haven't seen an official report on if he's if he's actually
- 12:20hurt, but the comment was made that there was not a thought of pulling
- 12:24him, So like that's very telling to me in a couple of ways of
- 12:28this coaching staff is like either one they're just fully supporting him and like didn't
- 12:35think the airs were that bad, and if that's the case, like,
- 12:37oh boy, we have issues with the coaching staff. Or two, like
- 12:41they know we don't have anybody close like those I think number two is is
- 12:46probably right. Like I want to believe the coaching staff when they say that,
- 12:50I seriously, I don't hinder Carberg and Chubba Pirty are like like not
- 12:54even serviceable either. So it's hard because yeah, maybe they can just come
- 13:01in and hand the ball off every time. But shit, if we can't
- 13:03do that with our starters, and you know, the one handoff, you
- 13:07could say maybe could have been a little bit of Urban's fault, the snap
- 13:13that just drilled the back of our guy in motion like stuff like that.
- 13:18That is all like control and cadence of your offense. And if you're a
- 13:22quarterback at any level, going all the way down to when you start in
- 13:26brick and middle school, you have to have control of the system that you're
- 13:31running. It doesn't matter what system you're doing. You just have to be
- 13:35confidence. You have to have that toise. You don't have to be good,
- 13:39you don't have to be able to sling it around. You just have
- 13:41to be in control that all the guys trust you that I'm your QB.
- 13:46The problem is, right now, Sims is the exact opposite of that.
- 13:50He's not in control, he's not poised, he has no idea. I
- 13:54mean, every time you catch this ball in the pocket, where like,
- 13:56what the hell is going to happen if we even catch the ball in the
- 13:58pocket. It's like such a mess right now. So yeah, I'm with
- 14:05you, Like I guess I don't I don't have an answer because right now
- 14:07you just you said too, like maybe year one you don't even count it
- 14:11for a rebuild because that's how bad Jeff Sims is. And we might not
- 14:16have any other option, and that might not be a bad thing to do.
- 14:18But I do want to say this, this brings up a whole nonother
- 14:22topic. Jeff Sims was this coaching staff's pit. Yeah, I think I
- 14:31think rules comment when he said what he say he didn't think about benching Sims.
- 14:37Basically you can translate that to he's just saying, yeah, we're fucked
- 14:41behind behind SAMs, we have nothing. That's basically what he's saying. And
- 14:46I think that's probably true. And the staff again handpicked Jeff Sims. Now
- 14:54I don't we don't know any background behind that, and we also don't know
- 14:56the background with Casey Thompson because a lot of a conversation, even after last
- 15:01week, but especially now, is if we would have kept Casey Thompson,
- 15:05would we have been to and oh I have a great game yesterday? Though
- 15:09at all exactly so? Then they played they played Ohio and I saw that
- 15:13this morning. And he threw two picks himself yesterday and had one hundred sixty
- 15:18yard passing he didn't play well. He played well week one, not week
- 15:20two. It we have no idea what those conversations were like about you know
- 15:28who's gonna start, But it would be nice to have someone like Casey Thompson
- 15:33to come in and play, because I think if we did have Casey Thompson
- 15:37on our bench and was still bought into the program, we would have put
- 15:41him in a halftime. I don't think there's any way he loses the QWI
- 15:43battle to begin the year. He might not. He might not there either.
- 15:48I don't know, but there's no way. You look at those two
- 15:50in practice, and I don't know did they practice before they told him to
- 15:54transfer. It was very very early. And again we don't know if he
- 15:56told him the transfer. We don't know. The conversation could have very well
- 16:00went, Hey, Casey, like new coaching staff, we're here, we
- 16:03have this guy coming in from Georgia Tech that we want to come to Nebraska
- 16:07and just letting you know when we start practice, it's going to be an
- 16:11open competition. That's what it's gonna be. And Casey could have said,
- 16:14well, I that I've been here, that should be my job and I'm
- 16:18gone Like that could have been how the conversation went. It also could have
- 16:21been, Hey, Casey, Jeffson's it's starting. It also could have been
- 16:25I mean, who knows what the conversation was like the bottom line as Casey
- 16:27made the decision to leave and now we are without a serviceable quarterback again,
- 16:36and and and comparing the two, one is a lot better at one aspect
- 16:45of the game than the other, and that is running the football. Jeff
- 16:48Sims is a better runner if he doesn't fumble it, then Casey Thompson,
- 16:53So what's frustrating? And you just you said this not too long ago.
- 16:57His run in the second half, early second half, but we score a
- 17:00touchdown on the whole first half. We were where's our quarterback designed run game?
- 17:07That looks so good against Minnesota? I say so good because we still
- 17:10didn't score many points, but we were gaining yards off of it in the
- 17:15first game and we didn't We didn't even show it in the first half.
- 17:18Were we trying to hide it for the second half? Again? We said
- 17:21this on the podcast last week. We cannot hide or save Jeff Simms run.
- 17:25He needs to run the ball twenty twenty five plus times. If that's
- 17:27what he's good at he's clearly not good at throwing and making decisions. Now.
- 17:32I still think he can throw it if there's no other defender on the
- 17:36field. I think he can hit an open guy. But if you put
- 17:38defense out there, were fucked. So why did we not run him?
- 17:44That's my one criticism with this game plan. And it's also ironic because we
- 17:52were playing well for a quarter and a half and we didn't really need that
- 17:55because we controlled and dominated that game up until midway through the second quarter.
- 18:00But we did. If that's the offense we're gonna run, then we probably
- 18:04should have Casey Thompson, Like, there's no we could have, Like we
- 18:07would have been fine, But we didn't do that, and so here we
- 18:12are. We can't change the past. We can't go grab a random quarterback
- 18:19in the portal right now and have to play for the rest of the year.
- 18:22Like, what do we do moving forward? Michigan State's quarterback, get
- 18:26transfer and play? Yeah, because if mail Tecker gets fired, they can
- 18:33transfer for thirty days. See you go pick him up. I have no
- 18:37idea who it is, but maybe we could. I don't know who it
- 18:40is, Peyton Thorne. I know the lapisodes whoever? Thinking then after it,
- 18:44Yeah, I was watching him late night football. He sucks, he's
- 18:49And then former former Michigan State quarterback Rocky Lombardi is coming to Lincoln with Northern
- 18:55Illinois. I knew, I knew, I know it's that name from somewhere.
- 18:59I was like, where where did I see this guy from? Yeah,
- 19:02well, well did he ever start there? Yeah? He did at
- 19:04Mission State for a year. That's what I thought. So, yeah,
- 19:08we'll get part of Northern Illinois on Wednesday. But they lost the Southern Illinois
- 19:14I think, which was like not Division one FBS. Anyways, So okay,
- 19:25next thought here is I want to as we deep dive or think about
- 19:29the game. I think anybody that watched the last five minutes of the first
- 19:33half were just an absolute disaster with the turnovers. I mean there was even
- 19:40like a simple play that Jeff Simms should have just went down in bounced,
- 19:42but he ran out of bounds and stop the clock gave Colorado a time out.
- 19:45They needed the time out at the end of field goal to give him
- 19:48thirteen Like little things like that. It was a disaster. But let's go
- 19:53back to like five or six minutes slept in the second quarter, score zero
- 19:57zero. We had the ball, we were driving, and I remember telling
- 20:03people, I'm like, if we get a field goal, great, if
- 20:06we go to the half zero zero, we have dominated and won. The
- 20:10first half that game was going like we wanted. It was slow. Colorado
- 20:17could not get anything going offensively. Our defense was fresh, they were flying
- 20:21around. We were getting pressure on Sanders, which you mentioned is one of
- 20:25your keys. Like we were winning that for a little bit. What you
- 20:30say, you had it, You had him rattled for a little bit,
- 20:33and it was like it was going perfectly, and then the fumble happened,
- 20:38and then here we go again. Ship went down the hill. And then
- 20:44it was like get to half time, get to half, to get to
- 20:45half time, and then every time we say that, something bad happens,
- 20:48and the bad happens. Then we finally got to halftime, we're down thirteen
- 20:51oh, and we're like, okay, now what So the hope or the
- 21:00optimism here is just like Minnesota. We played well to start the game,
- 21:04and then on top of that, we came back out of the third quarter
- 21:07and with something good, very positive. We had a drive we cut at
- 21:11the thirteen seven, so there's that's the positive takeaway here is that's the kind
- 21:18of stuff that we want to do, and honestly like that to me shows
- 21:22that we were playing smarter football. Not completely smart, but we're playing smarter
- 21:27because that's what we had to do and we were doing it pretty well.
- 21:30Now on the flip side, here's here's negative. Nancy's stance to all of
- 21:37that. What was Clemson and Charleston Southern score through that midway through the first
- 21:42quarter, end of the first quarter fourteen seven roun Clemson was losing Georgia and
- 21:48ball State. At the end of one it was zero to zero, Ohio
- 21:52State and Youngstown State. Late first quarter was seven seven. There are a
- 21:57couple other hole was down at the end of the first Yes, So the
- 22:03counterpoint to that is, no matter what kind of program or school you are,
- 22:08Yeah, you can put together a good game plan for a quarter and
- 22:11a half or whatever, but no matter who you're playing, but eventually,
- 22:15the better team is just gonna kick your ass and do what they want to
- 22:18do and it's gonna win. And that's exactly what happened in our games.
- 22:21So well, I want to look at these last two games, especially the
- 22:23Colorado game and say, wow, we actually did a lot of really good
- 22:27things for a quarter and a half, and we like we kick their ass.
- 22:32Yeah, we kind of did. But how many times do you like,
- 22:34teams have no chances of being in games against better football teams do that?
- 22:38And I remember looking at the score of the games we just mentioned and
- 22:41going, WHOA Clemson's down, WHOA Wall State Georgia end of one zero zero,
- 22:47And then next time you check, it's thirty five nothing at that half.
- 22:49Yeah. Yeah, I start talking shit in that Clemson game and I
- 22:52check next time they're up. Yes. So, like, I'm not saying
- 22:56Colorado Nebraska was the level of those two teams, but at the same time,
- 23:00that's what you talk about four quarter football and the style with how you
- 23:04play. Eventually one style is going to win out and wear on the other
- 23:10team. If we could have continued with our style, I'm not saying we
- 23:12would have just rained out of the water, but I think we could.
- 23:15We maybe could have won, maybe, but at the same time we don't.
- 23:19Maybe we don't have the players. Maybe Colorado is just that much better
- 23:23than we are talent wise across the board, And I think we can sit
- 23:29here and say their style that they play with is what Scott Frost played with,
- 23:32which is not particularly what we choose. But guess what we saw what
- 23:37happens now that that style works because in that third and fourth quarter, they
- 23:41just I mean it was seven yard past fourteen. I mean, it's exactly
- 23:45what we saw against TCU in Week one and it just they just they weren't
- 23:49rubbing it in. But that's just how they play. And it started to
- 23:52work because our defense got tired because our offense couldn't freaking not turn it over.
- 23:56So the defense is out there forever and they guess what where where where
- 24:00where? Touchdown? Touchdown? Touchdown? Now the games blow out. We
- 24:03got our asks to play Colorado. That's what happened. What sucks is what
- 24:11shitty is you're gonna you waited that great defensive game. That's what hurts.
- 24:15Probably I don't know what you think, but yeah, and I was texting
- 24:21you, guys, do it like our defense was kicking ass and you made
- 24:25the comment, what was your hot take? Best three defense, best defense
- 24:30in the Big Ten, worst offense. Yes, and I believe that that,
- 24:36and I think our defense has shown that it could be. Now we
- 24:40don't know how good. Minnesota's offense really is, but Colorado's offense is legit.
- 24:44We played well for half of the game, the first half, but
- 24:48once again the second half we did get exploited. And you look at the
- 24:53stat line for all the Colorado guys, it does not look like our defense
- 24:56played a great game. But I'm with you, they played. They did
- 25:00a really good job there early on of just shutting down what Colorado wanted to
- 25:03do, and then the floodgates opened the second half. So that gives me
- 25:08hope because I don't think we're going to see too many more high powered offenses
- 25:15like Colorado's the rest of the year, especially throwing the ball. Even your
- 25:18Michigans aren't gonna throw it like that. They're gonna be a good all around
- 25:23offense and still explosive, but they're not gonna throw it like snor Sanders Dak
- 25:27You. I don't want to say this often, but you are spot on
- 25:32on that guy. I mean, he is legit. I knew Rad Jackson's
- 25:37stake because I've watched I watched him a couple of times there when he's on
- 25:40ESPN, and I was like, this guy, you can just tell I
- 25:45know he's playing nobody's there, but you can just tell when someone has talent.
- 25:48I mean, that guy can fit balls in the spaces. He's never
- 25:55rattled. He never once looked now I say never. He kind of looked
- 25:59like we were getting to him because we were sacking it. I mean we
- 26:00sacked in seven times, like we were getting to him often, and we
- 26:07were hoping that would happen, and it did, but it didn't like bother
- 26:10him. He's like okay. And the moment that stuck out to me was
- 26:15it went from like a third and two and one of their players got an
- 26:21unforcedn like or something right at the end of the play, moving the third
- 26:26and seventeen. I'm like okay, And then next play Sanders delivered like a
- 26:30nineteen yard strike first down. I'm like, like it was nothing. I'm
- 26:33like, wow, Like this guy is legit. He hews and and he
- 26:40he's a good decision maker. He's he's all those things we talked about.
- 26:42He's poised, he's calm. Like I don't know it, just it.
- 26:47It'd be nice to have a guy like that. But we he looks like
- 26:49a pro. Yeah, he and he will. He will go pro somewhere.
- 26:53He will. He's got the mechanics, he's got the he's got the
- 26:56the swagger that goes with it too. Yep, don't got any cocky,
- 27:00but you have to move with a little bit of I'm the ship. He
- 27:04does. He does too with that, So very impressed by him. That
- 27:11reminded me of this next topic here. And I don't know if you know
- 27:14much about this if you heard about it, but both coach Prime and his
- 27:19son and a couple other guys, you just heard that their coach, I
- 27:25kept saying, their coach disrespected us. Yeah, what was that about.
- 27:30They said, they said some stuff, you know, and that we take
- 27:33it personal. It's personal when that happens. It's too late. It's too
- 27:36late to apologize all that stuff. Okay. And you read about this stuff
- 27:40on Twitter, and I was kind of confused too, because I'm like,
- 27:42I didn't remember him saying anything like directly pointed at Prime. Scott Frost took
- 27:48a shot to me, he did, and it was obvious. And when
- 27:52when he was doing that, we talked about on this podcast how that was.
- 27:56Don't don't give extra teams motivation, don't do it. So as they're
- 28:00saying this and everybody all the Husker fans are like, we didn't say anything,
- 28:04there's nothing set, Like, I don't know what you're talking about.
- 28:08I found finally, I was reading it back and forth of people on x
- 28:14that were commenting, and some guy found a quote in a linked paper that
- 28:18was what the quote that Rule said. This would have been back in the
- 28:22spring, right before the portal opened. He said, quote, I had
- 28:27my first team meeting last night. I'm one of those guys. I don't
- 28:30let the cameras in. There won't be a camera following me around. I
- 28:34want it to be about the players. And while there's no direct reference to
- 28:41Prime, he's talking about him. He's talking about Prime, and I don't
- 28:45give a shit Husker fans what you guys think and say, well, he
- 28:48never mentioned it. Well, he's not even saying anything negative about it.
- 28:51He is saying that my way is better. Rule is saying that what I'm
- 28:55doing this build, what I'm doing is better than what Primes do. And
- 29:00that's how Colorado took it. Now at the time we kind of laugh and
- 29:03yeah, there was a little bit of negative stigma with Prime and how he
- 29:07was going about as methods and and the showboating and the cameras and all this
- 29:12flashy nil and kicking guys at all this stuff, but that talk is ultimately
- 29:21giving. It gave Colorado extra motivation throughout the whole offseason. And I don't
- 29:26I don't care. I don't care if people say no, it didn't look
- 29:30at the facts, look at the reality. I don't care if rules comment
- 29:34meant that or not. How did Colorado take it? You know how they
- 29:38took it. They fought out, just said how they took it. They
- 29:41took it that way. So whether we said what we said or not,
- 29:44they took it that way, and they used that thing as extra motivation and
- 29:47they just kicked our ass because of So this goes back to what happened with
- 29:52Frost. And I'm not comparing ruling Frost, but don't give other teams extra
- 29:57fucking motivation. Play against you. Work silence, yeah, work under the
- 30:03radar, don't but don't come out and say stuff. Don't don't say stuff.
- 30:06Just do your work. And I think Rules trying to do that.
- 30:08And I don't think he meant to piss off Prime. I don't think that
- 30:11was his intention, but that is what happened, and it gave Colorado motivation
- 30:18so not again. I still believe in rule. I still think that it
- 30:22could work. It is going to be a slower rebuild. Five to seven
- 30:26years, like he said to me, is a little long, but it
- 30:29is going to take more than two games to realize if this thing can work
- 30:33out with him. But I am dialing it back on everything and just making
- 30:38sure we point out what has happened so far. I think three things right
- 30:44now. Are concerned that right there, which I don't think he meant to
- 30:47do what we just talked about. Second concerning thing, and I think this
- 30:49is a major thing, is what you mentioned, Dak. Jeff Sims is
- 30:53our quarterback and he hand picked Jeff sins Someone did on that staff. That
- 31:00was their decision, and it could have been him. It could have been
- 31:04Sadderfield. I know Tony White that Syracuse they would have played Georgia Tech probably
- 31:10in the ACC Like that was a decision that was made and that was his
- 31:15guy that he's going by so far through two games, it's we know what
- 31:21it's been. And then decision three that I've been I was like, was
- 31:25why the hell were we running the ball with him in the first half against
- 31:29Colorado? That was like Okay, that's what he's good at, So what
- 31:33are we what are we waiting for here? Worked against Minnesota. But outside
- 31:37of that, I do think the style and the way that he's playing,
- 31:41rule the staff. Our team is smarter, more crisp than we've seen in
- 31:45the past few years. It's closest to the way that we want football to
- 31:52be played in the Big Ten. It's close. We're the closest, not
- 31:55there yet, but it's the closest we've been. So that's why they're still
- 32:00are still hope there and we can still buy and think that it could work.
- 32:04I know last podcast it was everybody called me your ship down and hold
- 32:07your horses. That was me drinking thekool aid a little bit. It was,
- 32:12and I'm depressed because of it. But we need to see what happened.
- 32:16It is only two games. We have two very winnable football games,
- 32:22maybe maybe winnable as in we have a chance to win. We have a
- 32:27chance to win every game, but these are two games that we will see
- 32:32how we play, and I think it will be very telling how we play
- 32:37coming in the next two weeks. The style we play, with the guys
- 32:39that are playing, we better be treating this like it's our goddamn super Bowl
- 32:44because we need to find Yeah, we gotta find a win, we gotta
- 32:47find gotta win games. Right now, we're owing two. I don't think
- 32:52people thought we would go owing too. I think one and one was our
- 32:53most likely scenario in these first two games. It was. So it's not
- 32:58the end of the world. We're owing two. We don't got to blow
- 33:00up and freak out and say, oh, we're gonna win one or two
- 33:04games. But at the same time, well, no one lock it.
- 33:08No one thought Carl was gonna be like this going in the season, correct.
- 33:14I mean you look, if you would have watched Colorado's first game and
- 33:17then asked us to evaluate what our record would be after two games, there
- 33:22would be a lot more oh and two. Actually I picked the Braskau.
- 33:25I was wrong. But why was I wrong on that pick? The one
- 33:30time we're speaking of that, you went three and five this week on your
- 33:35five small picks that you got in, did I which? So I lost
- 33:40the Braska money line and I lost A and M yep, and you hit
- 33:45the other three props to you on that there we go. Amm really pissed
- 33:49me off. I thought for sure they're gonna win that game, and they're
- 33:51they're flying high, and then Amy looks pretty good. Yeah they did.
- 33:55I hate Miami though, so hopefully they keep sucking. But there's one last
- 34:02there's a point I want to get in here. I was beginning the season.
- 34:06I don't know if I told you about I don't know if I told
- 34:07you this. I wanted Nebraska, I said, go hire Dion And I
- 34:12heard it again this weekend. Oh, he doesn't fit our culture. Who
- 34:15gives a shit? Who who gives a shit? Like? What? What
- 34:20kind of culture? It's so special here that he wouldn't fit it or he
- 34:22wouldn't change. And I wanted Nebraska to hire him because I knew I was
- 34:29saying, you know, you only get him, you get his son with
- 34:32him. So I and I'm just tired of hearing he won't fit the culture.
- 34:37That's you can say that all you want, I guess. But and
- 34:43yeah, I heard a lot of the same things. I wouldn't say it
- 34:45was one of the people at said it wouldn't work. But I was also
- 34:49very skeptical of the whole thing. He's proven me wrong, I mean dead
- 34:54wrong, and he's proven all the people that didn't think it would work wrong,
- 35:00But I'm with you, like, I don't care what what people say
- 35:06doesn't fit the culture, It doesn't doesn't matter to me. If is he
- 35:08gonna win football games and whatever comes with that, let's let's let's get it
- 35:14here. And Dion clearly in two games too. It's only been two games,
- 35:21but it's shown that he can win football games and flip a program pretty
- 35:24quick. And the style, the way he did it is unlike we've ever
- 35:30seen before. So yeah, like, I'm with you that I would not
- 35:37have minded it. I don't whatever the culture or whatever that is, I
- 35:39don't I don't care. Is they gonna win football games? And I think
- 35:44the only counterpoint to that is like he he was able to run guys out
- 35:49of Colorado because they were just so horrific. I mean, they were one
- 35:52and eleven and lost on it by an average of like thirty points a game
- 35:57last year. Yeah, they're probably the worst team in nation, So that
- 36:00was very easy to do. That would have been tougher to do it in
- 36:01Nebraska. But again, if you're bringing guys in in today's environment, that
- 36:07is just a wild West. As people continue to try to figure that out,
- 36:10and you're winning games. Who gives a shit. I'm with you,
- 36:14I don't care, don't care. So Matt rule is a slow rebuild,
- 36:19absolutely. But I mentioned in the last podcast Peyton Manning was one guy that
- 36:22popped into mind. But get a get a celebrity football star in here that
- 36:27understands football, that can hire the right assistant coaches. But it's going to
- 36:31bring in Topper Cruise because this guy's a celebrity and freaking start winning games right
- 36:38from the top. And the difference between Colorado and Nebraska. If you do
- 36:42that in Nebraska, you probably might stay here long term, and you could
- 36:45continue doing it for years. Theon's gonna be gone. If this works,
- 36:49he's gone. He's going to some SEC school probably or acc or yeah big,
- 36:54He's going somewhere else. He's not staying at Colorado. If you do
- 36:57that in Nebraska, you're probably sitting Okay. So we'll see how this plays
- 37:04out, because I still want to go with Rulier and give him a little
- 37:07bit of time. But at the same time, you're in year three and
- 37:12you're winning four games, like it's gonna be very easy for people like the
- 37:15landscape and how it's shifting just say no, I want to go grab Drew
- 37:19Brees. I want Drew Brees to be the coach, all right, Drew
- 37:22Brees a goddamn six page letter and say hey, here's why you need to
- 37:24be our next football coach. You know, it's like maybe that's the way
- 37:30to go in today's world and might shift there. I don't know. The
- 37:35thing is with the transfer port and all that, now, no one wants
- 37:38to wait any longer because you can flip a team in a year. Now.
- 37:42You can get a whole new team like Neon did, and you can
- 37:45there were so many other transfer quarterbacks out there. I don't I don't get
- 37:50how they settled on Sims at all. Like you look at Hartman, he's
- 37:54bawling out and utter damn. Who's another good? Well, Wisconsin got Mordecai
- 37:58Eat He's pretty bad, but he looked terrible. The portals interesting because you're
- 38:04not going to be able to swing somebody to be a backup. So ultimately,
- 38:07what you're gonna have on your roster is a lot of teams. Is
- 38:10what we have a guy that you say is he's our quarterback, and then
- 38:15you're gonna have guys that just fall off a cliff after that, which is
- 38:19what we have. So you have to be very particular in your selection of
- 38:23that QB. And next year we're going to get a new shot at somebody
- 38:27else. We will, I mean, unless Jeff Sims makes a three sixty
- 38:34flip of how he is as a quarterback, I don't think anybody's going to
- 38:36be excited for him for a second year. So yeah, that's a good
- 38:39news. Is he's just a junior. He can't come back. He can,
- 38:43so the portal is gonna be open. We're gonna be able to get
- 38:45a guy. Is Matt Rule going to be able to evaluate that and get
- 38:49the right guy in? That's gonna be the question the whole offseason. And
- 38:52he messed up on Jeff Simms so far through two games. Maybe he could
- 38:57get better, but that's gonna be the earning question is will we know or
- 39:00are we better off getting somebody that can choose? Because quarterbacks the most important
- 39:05position in football, that's not even arguable, So I don't know, I
- 39:12don't know. We didn't get to talk about Texas, but your horns looked
- 39:15good against Alabama, not not my horns. I did. I did make
- 39:22some money on them. I'll just say that we'll get in more of that
- 39:25on Wednesday, and we'll also be previewing the Northern Illinois Huskies until then,
- 39:31Go big read Boomer sooner. I love that burnt orange dude,
