- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, everybody, Welcome to the U Kond of Women's Basketball
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coaches Show. We're with coach Oria in the offices here
- 0:05Speaker 1: at the World Champion Center. After the Huskies knocked off
- 0:08Speaker 1: Vanova on Sunday and they go to fourn oh and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Big East play, And of course the big news that
- 0:13Speaker 1: came out earlier today was that Page in the same
- 0:15Speaker 1: situation as as he was with her knee. It's a
- 0:18Speaker 1: little bit of a sprain. It's gonna take a little
- 0:19Speaker 1: bit of time. But that's the good news.
- 0:22Speaker 2: Yeah, considering you know, some of the other things that
- 0:26Speaker 2: some of the other scenarios that it could have been,
- 0:30Speaker 2: it actually is good news. You know, Page will be
- 0:35Speaker 2: back in no time. The rest of the team gets
- 0:40Speaker 2: an opportunity to play, uh without without her, So some
- 0:46Speaker 2: people are gonna you know, be in more more minutes
- 0:53Speaker 2: maybe than they were playing before. Different scenarios, different situations,
- 0:58Speaker 2: So try to turn it into a positive.
- 1:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and when you look at the replay too, I mean, yeah,
- 1:04Speaker 1: then he got knocked around a little bit, but sort
- 1:05Speaker 1: of the ankle that was my bigger concern.
- 1:08Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, it was just an awkward deal all the
- 1:13Speaker 2: way around, you know, from from any vantage point, you
- 1:20Speaker 2: know it, it just looked like you knew something with
- 1:24Speaker 2: something happened, you just weren't quite sure what it was.
- 1:26Speaker 2: And whenever Page or anybody for that matter, but certainly
- 1:30Speaker 2: someone who's had, you know, some of the issues that
- 1:33Speaker 2: she's had. Whenever something like that happens, your mind always
- 1:37Speaker 2: goes to the dark side, you know. And and and
- 1:40Speaker 2: we were, you know, we were really optimistic. We were,
- 1:44Speaker 2: you know, pleasantly surprised when you know, when Janelle arthletic
- 1:50Speaker 2: trainer told us it looks good, you know, so we
- 1:54Speaker 2: confirmed that. And now it's all, you know, her ankles fine,
- 1:59Speaker 2: everything or now obviously for a couple of days, everything sore.
- 2:02Speaker 2: But she's getting around, you know, she does, no crutches,
- 2:05Speaker 2: no shows, so we'll see.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good news. Onto the game Sunday. Thirty assists.
- 2:11Speaker 1: That's pretty darn impressive. On thirty five field goals.
- 2:14Speaker 2: That was unbelievable when you think about it. I think
- 2:17Speaker 2: in the in the first half, I think we only
- 2:20Speaker 2: had one bucket that wasn't an assist. It just it
- 2:26Speaker 2: just looked good. The ball was moving, it wasn't getting
- 2:31Speaker 2: stuck in anyone's hands. A lot of guys were making
- 2:35Speaker 2: plays for other people. We look like we could look
- 2:44Speaker 2: like when everything's clicking on all cylinders.
- 2:46Speaker 1: You know.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I was really really thrilled with not just the final score,
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, but the way we got to that score.
- 2:55Speaker 2: And it started with our defense and how much you know,
- 3:02Speaker 2: how much that helped us get into an offensive flow
- 3:05Speaker 2: because we've forced going over to play a different way
- 3:08Speaker 2: than they wanted to play, you know, so all the
- 3:12Speaker 2: way around, all aspects of the game, I was thrilled.
- 3:15Speaker 1: Yeah, and in you're in a situation in the Big
- 3:17Speaker 1: East where you're not going to have players that you
- 3:19Speaker 1: know match up too well with the Johana with her
- 3:21Speaker 1: size at six foot five. You made that change. You
- 3:23Speaker 1: brought the two guards and spit up the game, and
- 3:25Speaker 1: that's when it really changed.
- 3:27Speaker 2: Yeah, we have to be able to be flexible. You know,
- 3:30Speaker 2: there's going to be times when we want to try
- 3:33Speaker 2: to mismatch that. You know, we want to have Jenna
- 3:36Speaker 2: out there with someone who can't guard her and live
- 3:43Speaker 2: with the fact that Jenna might struggle defensively. But you know,
- 3:48Speaker 2: we also have to be able to play small and
- 3:52Speaker 2: make the other team uncomfortable with who they have on
- 3:55Speaker 2: the floor. So it's you know, back and forth, kind
- 3:57Speaker 2: of a little chess game. But I love us a
- 4:00Speaker 2: lineup too because it does give us a better full
- 4:04Speaker 2: court pressure team, and that seems to you know, energize
- 4:10Speaker 2: our guys pretty much.
- 4:12Speaker 1: You know, you have a good situation. You have a
- 4:14Speaker 1: lot of depth this year. That hasn't been the case
- 4:15Speaker 1: the last few years. Now you're able to get that
- 4:18Speaker 1: pressure going and mix and match.
- 4:19Speaker 2: You can, Yeah, you can. The balancing act is make
- 4:26Speaker 2: sure you don't have a lineup that doesn't look good
- 4:31Speaker 2: out there, just because you want to get players into
- 4:34Speaker 2: the game. So it still has to fit. They all
- 4:37Speaker 2: have to fit together, and that's the you know, that's
- 4:41Speaker 2: the part that you're trying to get, you know, square
- 4:44Speaker 2: away before tournament time comes around.
- 4:47Speaker 1: KK has certainly been a big, big plus off the bench.
- 4:50Speaker 1: Not only just she's done defensively, but now she's at
- 4:52Speaker 1: it offense thirteen against Marquette, fifteen against Villanova, and she's
- 4:57Speaker 1: taking it to the rim and she's getting fouled and
- 4:59Speaker 1: getting the throw.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Yeah, we don't do that enough. I mean we'll get
- 5:04Speaker 2: into that. Yeah we don't. We don't. We don't get
- 5:07Speaker 2: to the free throw line enough. But I think Kk's
- 5:11Speaker 2: defense is allowing her to have more opportunities too, to
- 5:19Speaker 2: get paint touches. You know, we talk about that a lot.
- 5:23Speaker 2: It seemed like every time we got the ball into
- 5:26Speaker 2: the lane, whether we threw it in there or whether
- 5:29Speaker 2: we dribbled it in there, something good happened. And when
- 5:34Speaker 2: you you know, when you have that and you can
- 5:37Speaker 2: play inside and then out as opposed to everything being
- 5:40Speaker 2: on the perimeter, you do put yourself in a position
- 5:44Speaker 2: to get found. Well. I think I'm like, you know,
- 5:48Speaker 2: KK finishing at the basket, you know, that's not been
- 5:51Speaker 2: one of her you know, strengths. So if if and
- 5:55Speaker 2: making a three, you know, I think it was our
- 5:56Speaker 2: second one of the year, you know, so maybe that's
- 6:00Speaker 2: the start of something, you know, I hope.
- 6:02Speaker 1: So yeah. I think conversely, I mean, you got Ash
- 6:05Speaker 1: who loves to shoot the mid range, loves to shoot
- 6:08Speaker 1: the three, and she's a really good free throw shooter.
- 6:10Speaker 1: But we saw I think in the fourth quarter she
- 6:12Speaker 1: attacked the rim once, but I probably think you want
- 6:15Speaker 1: to see that more from her.
- 6:18Speaker 2: It really is a conundrum. I can't explain it. I
- 6:23Speaker 2: can't explain why someone who's as athletic as she is.
- 6:27Speaker 2: Aggressive as she is, you see her sometimes go up
- 6:31Speaker 2: for a rebound, and how much you know, how much
- 6:36Speaker 2: you know she can you elevate and you say, why,
- 6:40Speaker 2: why would you? Why would you not take more opportunities
- 6:44Speaker 2: to get to the rim. So we keep harping on that,
- 6:48Speaker 2: we keep encouraging her to do that. And I always
- 6:52Speaker 2: said that if you're a really good three point shooter,
- 6:54Speaker 2: you have to be able to get to the rim
- 6:56Speaker 2: because people are going to work really hard to run
- 6:58Speaker 2: you off the line. So let's, uh, let's hope she
- 7:04Speaker 2: makes so many threes that they have to run her
- 7:06Speaker 2: off the line. Let's but that way.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Yeah, let's how I always stated she every game that
- 7:09Speaker 1: would be awesome for which you know on the Yukon
- 7:11Speaker 1: Women's Basketball Coaches Show and just a minute here Onlearfield
