Latest / Mini Scroll / MINI TECH SCROLL: YouTube launches podcast chart, celebrity mobile game ads flood TikTok + Google AI Mode
Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Tech Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:05culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:08media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:12through Thursday and sometimes Friday.
- 0:15I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:19media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to mini scroll,
- 0:23everyone, mini tech scroll. All right, let's just get
- 0:26straight into the stories for today, because again, I don't
- 0:28have an update for you guys. O the first story that I have
- 0:32for you guys is that YouTube has launched a podcast charts.
- 0:37The podcast wars continue as YouTube has taken a big step in
- 0:42trying to assert its dominance in the podcasting sphere against
- 0:46some of the other platforms. YouTube has launched a top
- 0:49podcast chart and it has also made some updates to its podcast
- 0:54homepage. So I'll tell you about those as
- 0:55well. The podcast chart is the top 100
- 0:57podcasts on YouTube and it's updated every Wednesday.
- 1:01It's only available in the US for now, but they will expand
- 1:04two different regions. And this chart is based off of
- 1:08watch time, which is such tea because the other platforms, the
- 1:13way that they choose podcast ranking is really unclear.
- 1:18I don't know, maybe they have changed things since I last
- 1:20looked into it. But as far as I know, if
- 1:22somebody's like, oh, we're number one in this category in
- 1:25this country, that does not mean that that podcast has the most
- 1:29listens in that country for that category.
- 1:32I mean, this is like what we were talking about.
- 1:34Was it last week when we were talking about Spotify?
- 1:36Really racing plays, it's like podcasting as an industry.
- 1:41The metrics, the analytics are so murky.
- 1:43It's so hard to actually like, there's just like no standard.
- 1:47So I guess for YouTube to come out and say this is how we are
- 1:50going to judge the ranking, I think that makes sense.
- 1:53And I like that it's based on watch time as opposed to number
- 1:56of subscribers or even like number of listeners per episode.
- 1:59I like that it's based on like how long people are actually
- 2:03consuming that content, because that is one of the weirdest
- 2:05things about all of these platforms is, you know, what
- 2:09constitutes a view? Like if 60 seconds is a view
- 2:12slash listen on a podcast or a video, like can you really say
- 2:17that somebody has actually watched that content?
- 2:20No, of course not 60 seconds is nothing, especially when you
- 2:23think about how long podcast can be.
- 2:25So yes, like does that mean that many will ever chart?
- 2:27Like probably not because our episodes are so short.
- 2:31The top podcast has continuously since they started tracking this
- 2:35on YouTube is Joe Rogan. Unsurprising, but you know his
- 2:39episodes are also so long now when it comes to the podcast
- 2:43homepage, this is from podnews.net quote.
- 2:47YouTube has also quietly updated the YouTube podcast homepage in
- 2:51the US to be editorially curated.
- 2:54It highlights podcast as square podcast artwork and editorially
- 2:58curates them into different rails.
- 3:00So award-winning, music minded in conversation with gaming and
- 3:04sport, etcetera. Viewers in other countries get
- 3:07the older algorithmic page that contains 16 by 9 video
- 3:11thumbnails, including many things that aren't really
- 3:14podcasts. This change appears to only have
- 3:17affected the US for now. So this also makes sense because
- 3:21a lot of the platforms have kind of an editorial team that's
- 3:25working on curating like the different lists and like, you
- 3:28know, kind of the different home pages, the different categories
- 3:32and where podcasts kind of slot into that.
- 3:34So yeah, I think it makes sense as opposed to being fully
- 3:37algorithmically driven. This will help with
- 3:40discoverability for smaller podcasts, niche podcasts, that
- 3:43kind of stuff. In theory, I love this because
- 3:46YouTube absolutely dominates podcasting for young audiences.
- 3:51I know when we talked about podcast casting last week, so
- 3:54many of you guys messaged me saying that YouTube like is your
- 3:58number one by far for podcasting.
- 4:00And since we started posting on YouTube, it has absolutely
- 4:04changed our podcast, like transformed our brand.
- 4:07So yeah, I think it's exciting to see that YouTube is like
- 4:10throwing their hat even further into the ring, being like, no,
- 4:13no, no, no, don't come and cut our grass.
- 4:15We still want to dominate because YouTube is also so
- 4:18rarely considered as a valid platform to look at within the
- 4:22industry. But we do know that YouTube
- 4:24first podcasts tend to be cultier.
- 4:27They tend to have so much more longevity.
- 4:30They also are more self-sustaining than, you know,
- 4:33podcasts that aren't posted on YouTube and require advertisers
- 4:36fully to back them. So yeah, it it's, it's exciting.
- 4:40It's a very interesting time in the podcasting world right now
- 4:44with all of these platforms. All right, the next story that I
- 4:47have for you guys is that celebrity ads for mobile games
- 4:50are taking over TikTok. So there is this interesting new
- 4:54trend taking over the celebrity ad space where they're
- 4:58contracting out their likeness to promote mobile games all over
- 5:02TikTok. I'm sure you guys have seen
- 5:04this, but everyone from Simon Cowell to Kylie Jenner to
- 5:08Courtney Cox and Lisa Kudrow to Pedro Pascal to LeBron James to
- 5:13Kevin Hart, so many celebrities have been doing this.
- 5:16And sometimes it appears to be the real celebrity and then
- 5:19other times I swear it is AI. And I was looking more into this
- 5:24and there are definitely posts on Reddit and stuff about people
- 5:26being like, why are there all these like AI celebrity ads
- 5:30everywhere? But then all of the legitimate
- 5:32news sites and publishers that have covered anything close to
- 5:36this are not really referencing that these are like AI generated
- 5:41ads. And I think the vast majority of
- 5:45them are, but I guess there's maybe no way to fully tell.
- 5:48So they're not going to put that in writing.
- 5:51I don't know. But just know my opinion is that
- 5:53the vast majority of what we're seeing is AI generated
- 5:56regardless. Royal Kingdom is the biggest
- 5:58mobile game that does these ads. There are others, but that's
- 6:01like the number one that you guys have probably seen.
- 6:04So for context, Royal Kingdom is a Turkish game by developer
- 6:08Dream Games that test launched in 2020 in just three countries
- 6:12and then officially launched in March of 2021.
- 6:15That same month, Dream Games raised $57.5 million in funding,
- 6:20which was the largest Series A for a Turkish startup company
- 6:24ever. They then raised a Series B and
- 6:27a Series C, securing $155,000,000 and 200 and $55
- 6:32million, respectively. So they have some cash to
- 6:37splash. And I was reading this article
- 6:39and the journalist was saying, like, once the games developed,
- 6:43it is kind of like a low overhead business.
- 6:46So really, like tons of that money can just go to marketing.
- 6:49OK. So the question is, why are they
- 6:51doing this? Like, surely it's not working,
- 6:55right? Their strategy has been to use
- 6:57celebrities, and the concept of a celebrity endorsement, similar
- 7:01to influencer marketing, is that fans of that celebrity
- 7:05inherently trust them more. And so it drives connection
- 7:08between the consumer and the product or the brand that the
- 7:11celebrity is promoting, right? But Kylie Jenner promoting a
- 7:14mobile game is so obviously a cash grab.
- 7:18There's no alignment there at all.
- 7:20And so does that not cheapen the experience or does that not
- 7:24almost make the company look like scammy or something like
- 7:27that? I actually saw a journalist say
- 7:30that Simon Cowell famously talked about not very long ago
- 7:33about how he doesn't have a mobile phone.
- 7:36So the fact that he is out here promoting mobile app games makes
- 7:40literally no sense. Writer Kaylee Donaldson for
- 7:43Pajiba suggests this quote. So when we see a familiar face
- 7:47doing an obvious cash grab for something we don't expect or
- 7:50associate them with, it sets off alarm bells.
- 7:53The ad loses some of its potency.
- 7:56How do you balance that out? Well, when it comes to these
- 7:59mobile games, sheer quantity seems to be the strategy.
- 8:02More ads everywhere? Just bloody unavoidable.
- 8:07If nothing else, it does reveal that some celebrities probably
- 8:10aren't as cash rich as they would like you to believe.
- 8:13Kylie Jenner and her mother spent months trying to wrangle
- 8:16good headlines to, quote UN quote, prove that she was a real
- 8:19billionaire, but she still has to do stuff like this.
- 8:22OK. That is absolutely the strategy.
- 8:25I mean, the celebrity strategy is interesting in general
- 8:27because it's like Kylie Jenner showing up on your for you page
- 8:30promoting a game. You are probably going to hover
- 8:32on that, right? You are probably going to pause
- 8:34and be like, what the fuck is this?
- 8:35Like, it feels so unusual that you're like, huh, OK.
- 8:40And I mean, I'm here talking about it.
- 8:42I'm amplifying this. So it's clearly working to an
- 8:44extent. People are writing articles
- 8:45about this strategy because it's so bizarre.
- 8:47And a lot of the ads are getting more and more funny.
- 8:50Like, they're becoming, like, skits.
- 8:52And I don't know, they're, like, quite entertaining the ads that
- 8:55we've been seeing from celebrities for this game.
- 8:58So, yeah, there's definitely an interesting strategy here.
- 9:01But part of that strategy is for sure just to like spam the
- 9:05market with like nonstop ads for this game by different
- 9:09celebrities. The payday must be so insane,
- 9:12But I still stand by the fact that I do believe a lot of these
- 9:16are AII do not think it is always a celebrity that is like
- 9:20full on doing the ad. I think they are using AI
- 9:24generated depictions of these celebrities.
- 9:27All right, and the last word that I have for you guys is
- 9:31during Google's developer conference yesterday, the
- 9:34company made it clear that it is going all in on AI search.
- 9:39So all Google users in the US will soon have access to Google
- 9:43AI mode, which is where the company will focus its search
- 9:46efforts. Now, this will obviously roll
- 9:48out to other regions as well. So this is from The Verge quote.
- 9:52The new features coming to AI mode are mostly things that you
- 9:55simply can't do with a normal Google query.
- 9:57There's Deep Search, Google's take on the deep research trend
- 10:01that AI models, which turns your prompt into lots of searches and
- 10:04spends time looking up and synthesizing information for you
- 10:08to give a hopefully broad and coherent summary of even a very
- 10:12large topic. Project Mariner, the previously
- 10:15experimental feature that can actually click around the web
- 10:18and do stuff for you. Google likes to show Mariner.
- 10:22Booking vacation travel for you, or hunting around the web for
- 10:25its best concert ticket prices and then buying the best deal
- 10:28all on its own is now all also built into AI mode.
- 10:32And with Search Live, you can interact with the search engine
- 10:36by having a conversation with it and by pointing your camera at
- 10:39whatever you're looking for. They say it will also eventually
- 10:43be able to connect to your inbox.
- 10:45Like your e-mail inbox so the system can learn more about who
- 10:49you are, what you're interested in.
- 10:51I feel like the future has come too fast.
- 10:53I'm scared. I don't want Google AI to be
- 10:57like booking my vacations for me.
- 10:58I feel like that is so crazy. I know that like eventually it's
- 11:02going to just feel normal and I need to just get around it, but
- 11:06I don't know. This is just happening so fast.
- 11:08I swear to God if you asked half of us like 3 years ago if we
- 11:12even knew what AI was, we probably would say no.
- 11:16What are you talking about? At least in this capacity, it's
- 11:20all happened so fast. And I understand that's
- 11:22literally how technology happens.
- 11:24I know that the consumer technology space was quite
- 11:26stagnant for a long time. We were very stuck in like Web
- 11:292.0. But I'm not ready for Web 3.0.
- 11:34Like I'm not ready for the rate of how quickly everything is
- 11:37changing. It's like we're not going to
- 11:40have brain cells anymore. It freaks me out that there's
- 11:44going to just be so many people in the world who won't be able
- 11:47to, to put like writing together, arguments together,
- 11:50even, you know, necessarily like respond to emails and stuff.
- 11:53Without generative AI, it's going to change how future
- 11:58generations interact with information, how they learn, how
- 12:02they produce work. And it freaks me out thinking
- 12:04about how much they're going to be missing in terms of knowledge
- 12:07and research. And I don't know, even just like
- 12:11writing content, like writing an essay or something without the
- 12:15help of this and critical thinking and like all of these
- 12:17skills that are so important. And I fear it's going to make
- 12:21the population as a whole much stupider.
- 12:24And then of course, we're all going to rely on AI, then
- 12:27generative AI to produce quality work because everyone's going to
- 12:32be too dumb to write their own emails.
- 12:34They keep causing the problem and then solving the problem and
- 12:38we're just stuck in this like capitalist, like hell hole
- 12:41cyclone. I also think there's not enough
- 12:43conversation about how implementing these tools and
- 12:48this technology into workplaces is.
- 12:51I mean, I know everybody's like it's taking jobs and it has
- 12:55started to take some jobs. Like don't get me wrong, I think
- 12:58that was a bit of fear mongering early on and we didn't see kind
- 13:02of the repercussions of that or the results of that.
- 13:05I think we are starting to see that a little bit more now, but
- 13:08I think the bigger impact will be implementing this into
- 13:11workplaces and how much our productivity is going to expect
- 13:16to just absolutely skyrocket. Like people are already
- 13:20struggling for their lives basically working like for
- 13:23people's jobs in corporations without ever getting a pay rise,
- 13:26recognition, a title change. You know, we talked recently
- 13:30about how like people leave corporations and they never
- 13:33replace their role and then that job just gets like put on to
- 13:36somebody else and they get nothing for it.
- 13:39Everyone is so burnt out all the time and making like no money.
- 13:43And I fear this is all going to make that like 20 times worse
- 13:46because why else would you need to use generative AI in a
- 13:50workplace? It's to be more productive, it's
- 13:52to work faster. It's to put more pressure on the
- 13:56teams to just produce more. So a good way to push back
- 14:01against generative AI and what's happening right now kind of
- 14:05while we're on the like, the precipice of all of this is to
- 14:08implement or prioritize slow work, meaningful work,
- 14:14meaningful output, quantity over quality.
- 14:18And I know that's kind of ironic for me to say because I do a
- 14:20podcast literally five days a week.
- 14:23And a huge part of kind of my working philosophy while I build
- 14:27the business is like, we do have to do many different things all
- 14:31the time and we have to be churning and churning and
- 14:34churning. But I do think now we found kind
- 14:36of a good happy medium like quantity and quality.
- 14:39But yeah, if there is a way to push back on it, I'm going to
- 14:41say prioritizing slow, meaningful quality work will
- 14:47probably be more impactful than we can imagine if we want to
- 14:51kind of, I guess, maintain some control as Web 3.0 absolutely
- 14:57explodes. All right, guys, that's it for
- 14:59Mini Tech Scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
