- 0:15Speaker 1: Hello, Wyn, Welcome everybody to episode sixty six of Cards
- 0:19Speaker 1: and Categories. I'm Mike cool Ard from Rasball, joined as
- 0:22Speaker 1: always by my very good friend Jeremy Burr, also from Rasball.
- 0:25Speaker 1: How you're doing tonight, buddy.
- 0:27Speaker 2: I'm doing very very well because I do not have
- 0:30Speaker 2: to completely apologize about a Dodgers sweep for calling the
- 0:34Speaker 2: Yankees to win. So I didn't completely jinks the World Series.
- 0:38Speaker 2: I only mostly jinks the World Series. So I'm doing
- 0:41Speaker 2: a lot better now that the Yankees have decided to
- 0:43Speaker 2: show up for the second half of the World Series.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there was some jinxing going on. We definitely,
- 0:49Speaker 1: I think got inside of the manager's heads a little bit,
- 0:52Speaker 1: especially after Game one, some of the follies that Aaron
- 0:55Speaker 1: Boone had that I was like, oh, yeah, that's my fault. Sorry,
- 1:00Speaker 1: But we are speaking on October thirtieth, Wednesday night, Game
- 1:06Speaker 1: five of the World Series. That is happening right now.
- 1:08Speaker 1: The Yankees are up for nothing. So I also have to,
- 1:12Speaker 1: like I've been all day kind of like you know,
- 1:14Speaker 1: prepping in my mind what I was going to talk
- 1:16Speaker 1: about in terms of like recapping these games and how
- 1:19Speaker 1: lifeless the Yankees had looked, but they're totally making us
- 1:22Speaker 1: flip the script because they opened the game tonight with
- 1:26Speaker 1: the bombastic first inning Aaron Judge breaking out the home
- 1:31Speaker 1: run stick and getting that swing grooved. I mean he
- 1:35Speaker 1: also got an absolute meatball from Jack Clarity right down
- 1:38Speaker 1: the middle. But we might be in for that longer
- 1:42Speaker 1: World Series after those first three games with the Dodgers. Way,
- 1:46Speaker 1: that's where we'll start. We'll start with recapping some of
- 1:48Speaker 1: the World Series stuff and then we're going to move
- 1:50Speaker 1: into discussing the Arizona Fall League. I'm going out to
- 1:54Speaker 1: Phoenix tomorrow for First Pitch Arizona. So if you're listening
- 1:57Speaker 1: to this and you're looking for somebody to meet up
- 2:00Speaker 1: with and First Pitch Arizona and say hi, I will
- 2:03Speaker 1: be out there attending some of the seminars, some of
- 2:05Speaker 1: the podcast recordings, and the games. And it looks like
- 2:08Speaker 1: I might have some World Series games to watch. So
- 2:11Speaker 1: what has really stood out for you in this World
- 2:13Speaker 1: Series matchup so far for these first four and a
- 2:16Speaker 1: third games.
- 2:18Speaker 2: Yeah, I think I think you hit it right. It's
- 2:20Speaker 2: like if you would have asked me that like a
- 2:21Speaker 2: day ago, it would have been a completely different answer
- 2:24Speaker 2: than is right now. So it's all I'll call it
- 2:27Speaker 2: a few things. First fall, Freddy Freeman. That's a pretty
- 2:31Speaker 2: easy one. I think when we talked last week it was,
- 2:35Speaker 2: you know, some role players going to show up and
- 2:37Speaker 2: do something crazy. I don't know that you consider Freddie
- 2:39Speaker 2: Freeman a role player per se, but like there were
- 2:41Speaker 2: so many questions about the injury and can the guy
- 2:44Speaker 2: even walk and things like that, and he's like, I
- 2:47Speaker 2: don't need to walk. I can walk around the bases
- 2:50Speaker 2: if I hit it out of the park. And you know,
- 2:52Speaker 2: he's now hit a home run in six consecutive World
- 2:55Speaker 2: Series games. Nobody has ever hit a home run in
- 2:57Speaker 2: every single game of the World Series in which you
- 3:01Speaker 2: know the team you know, I would have to think
- 3:03Speaker 2: that win if that's to happen. Uh So we'll see
- 3:07Speaker 2: if he continues the streak tonight. But definitely Freddy Freeman
- 3:11Speaker 2: stick stands out absolutely. I think you also hit the
- 3:15Speaker 2: nail on the head that Aaron Boone has unfortunately stood
- 3:17Speaker 2: out for his lack of managing nothing like the contract
- 3:23Speaker 2: year and throwing Nestll Cortez hasn't thrown a pitch in
- 3:25Speaker 2: five years out on the mound to try to save
- 3:29Speaker 2: this one, and so yeah, that that also jumps out.
- 3:33Speaker 2: And probably the last thing for me is, man, this
- 3:35Speaker 2: has been fun, Like it has just been an absolutely
- 3:38Speaker 2: fun World Series. I know, yesterday was a little bit
- 3:41Speaker 2: of a blowout game and we might be on the
- 3:43Speaker 2: way like again tonight with with the Yankees Bats all
- 3:47Speaker 2: of a sudden coming alive. But it has been like there,
- 3:51Speaker 2: there haven't These haven't been massive blowouts, they haven't been
- 3:54Speaker 2: you know things just like well, the game was kind
- 3:57Speaker 2: of over, we just coasted the end. It has been
- 4:00Speaker 2: exciting almost the entire time, and that's really been fun
- 4:04Speaker 2: to watch, fun to jump in and enjoy. And there's
- 4:09Speaker 2: no lack of talent on these two teams making it happen.
- 4:12Speaker 2: So that's it for me. Those are the big things
- 4:15Speaker 2: jumping out. What about you, what's been some of the
- 4:18Speaker 2: highlights for you of the World Series so far?
- 4:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, obviously you've got to talk about Freddie Freeman.
- 4:23Speaker 1: That you can tell that those days off that they
- 4:25Speaker 1: had allowed him to rehabilitate that ankle a little bit
- 4:29Speaker 1: and found his power stroke. Whatever game plan the Yankees
- 4:32Speaker 1: had against him, I think was maybe a little more
- 4:35Speaker 1: centered on him being banged up and like I was
- 4:39Speaker 1: gonna say wrong, yeah, but I mean right out the
- 4:42Speaker 1: gate in Game one. I mean, what an epic Game
- 4:44Speaker 1: one mirroring the Kirk Gibson walk off home or off
- 4:47Speaker 1: of Dennis Seckersley. So of course this means Nestra Cortes
- 4:51Speaker 1: on his way to a Hall of Fame closing career,
- 4:53Speaker 1: although obviously different way that we got there. And what's
- 4:58Speaker 1: crazy is that that Freeman Homer just erased so much
- 5:02Speaker 1: of what happened in that game that was amazing. On
- 5:05Speaker 1: top of in the tenth inning, Jazz Chisholm swiping those
- 5:09Speaker 1: couple of stor on bases, he I think was the
- 5:12Speaker 1: first player ever with three stolen bases in a World
- 5:14Speaker 1: Series game with that effort, and then you also had
- 5:19Speaker 1: the Alex Berdugo catch over in left field against the
- 5:22Speaker 1: wall that kind of was reminiscent of Derek Jeter diving
- 5:26Speaker 1: into the stands at Yankee Stadium slash like Steve Bartman,
- 5:30Speaker 1: although we got Evil Steve Bartman in Game of five
- 5:34Speaker 1: or Game four, sorry apologies, and even that, like Game
- 5:38Speaker 1: four was a game up until that eighth inning when
- 5:41Speaker 1: the Dodgers bullpen imploded. There a little bit, and you know,
- 5:45Speaker 1: it was a one run game, the Dodgers were in it,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and you know, a three four run lead even as
- 5:52Speaker 1: the Yankees have right now, it's not safe in Yankee
- 5:54Speaker 1: Stadium with these offenses that it can explode pretty quickly,
- 5:58Speaker 1: and we saw that in Game four with you know,
- 6:01Speaker 1: the non Judge and Soto bats coming alive for the Yankees.
- 6:04Speaker 1: I was, it's kind of crazy how just the start
- 6:08Speaker 1: of this game has really turned the narrative of the
- 6:11Speaker 1: World Series around. Because I was even prepping for like,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you know, if Jack Flaherty was looking good and the
- 6:16Speaker 1: Dodgers were up a runner two as we started this
- 6:19Speaker 1: podcast that you know, starting the narrative of Hey, Game
- 6:23Speaker 1: four was all fun in games that the Yankees got
- 6:26Speaker 1: the bottom of their lineup going, but they kept Judge
- 6:30Speaker 1: in Soto kind of in check. Really unraveled today because
- 6:34Speaker 1: you can see in Game five where the Judge and
- 6:36Speaker 1: Sodo combo came back to bite the Dodgers finally. But yeah,
- 6:40Speaker 1: it's it's been a fantastic heavyweight bout. I've really enjoyed it.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Yeah, and you call it a fun one there that
- 6:46Speaker 2: I'd failed to mention as the Bartman type situation here
- 6:52Speaker 2: with Mookie Bets. I don't know that a's worth spending
- 6:55Speaker 2: a lot of time on that, because the Internet's taken
- 6:57Speaker 2: plenty of pleasure in that one. I think the only
- 7:00Speaker 2: fans that appreciated that were potentially Yankees fans, and that
- 7:03Speaker 2: might say say something there as far as people a
- 7:07Speaker 2: certain time, a certain type of Yankee fans, Yes, like
- 7:11Speaker 2: after one or two additional drinks, I think, which you
- 7:15Speaker 2: know that that's that's unfortunate. That's for the game, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 2: and uh, you know, I think how many highlights you
- 7:21Speaker 2: go back to prior World Series of uh fans reaching
- 7:24Speaker 2: over the wall and stealing home runs and interfering what
- 7:27Speaker 2: was the.
- 7:28Speaker 1: We had to remember that with the glaper Torres double,
- 7:32Speaker 1: with the fan reaching over doing his best Jeffrey Mayer
- 7:34Speaker 1: in impersonation, another like just like it was a crazy game,
- 7:39Speaker 1: one of like throwbacks. And I also enjoyed the way
- 7:42Speaker 1: that that that fan ski daddled out of there immediately
- 7:45Speaker 1: after he was like nope, we got to get out
- 7:48Speaker 1: of here, son, And even like when he was making
- 7:50Speaker 1: the catch, the guy next to him in the stands
- 7:52Speaker 1: was like, bro, like what are you doing? Like this
- 7:55Speaker 1: is home game. Do you're not like so, uh yeah,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I totally actually kind of forgotten about that moment until
- 8:01Speaker 1: you brought it up.
- 8:02Speaker 2: So it's yeah, it's it's it's just it's been a
- 8:04Speaker 2: fun world series, and I think that's that was kind
- 8:08Speaker 2: of what we were hoping for, uh, with with these
- 8:10Speaker 2: two teams like being kind of heavyweights, that they would
- 8:13Speaker 2: you know, I don't think we were expecting the Dodgers
- 8:16Speaker 2: to jump out to a three to nothing lead. I
- 8:18Speaker 2: think both of us said the series was gonna go seven.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Maybe I still will, but I don't think either of
- 8:23Speaker 2: us really saw the Dodgers just taking a bowl by
- 8:25Speaker 2: the horns and really making it what it is. But
- 8:30Speaker 2: we'll see here as things finish out. You know. I
- 8:32Speaker 2: still you have to say the Dodgers the favorites at
- 8:34Speaker 2: this point, you know, the Yankees absolutely have to run
- 8:36Speaker 2: on the table. I am frankly very shocked that because
- 8:40Speaker 2: Garrett Cole pitched really, really well in you know, Game one,
- 8:43Speaker 2: I am kind of shocked that they did not bring
- 8:45Speaker 2: him back for Game four to try to get Game
- 8:48Speaker 2: four and seven out of him, just because of how
- 8:52Speaker 2: the pitchings looked for the Yankees, like I'm the back
- 8:54Speaker 2: getting there, and so you know they're gonna get everything
- 8:58Speaker 2: from him tonight, and so that's gonna probably pay play
- 9:00Speaker 2: well in their favor, especially when they're given a four
- 9:03Speaker 2: spot after two innings. That's uh, you know, works pretty well.
- 9:08Speaker 2: But I'm kind of surprised that they didn't try to
- 9:11Speaker 2: stretch and get three full games out of Garrett Cole.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Uh you know, hey, Aaron Boone, Yeah, you haven't brought
- 9:17Speaker 2: a world seriously Yankees in New York here for some time.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Maybe you got to pull off all the stops on
- 9:22Speaker 2: this one. And by that I mean not Nestra Cortez.
- 9:27Speaker 1: What a yeah, what a strange moment, and just like
- 9:29Speaker 1: what a crazy high leverage situation to have him enter
- 9:33Speaker 1: in in the ball that he threw to Otani there
- 9:36Speaker 1: that Otani fouled off and for Duco caught was also
- 9:39Speaker 1: a cookie that was not something that Otani missed by much,
- 9:42Speaker 1: and honestly, I think it almost threw Otani off a
- 9:45Speaker 1: little bit that it was such a grooved pitch and
- 9:48Speaker 1: he barely missed it. So Uh. The other thing is
- 9:52Speaker 1: like with Game four, like I do wonder if they
- 9:57Speaker 1: holstered coal there because they knew the dodg were doing
- 10:00Speaker 1: that bullpen game, and like you, I think actually, like
- 10:04Speaker 1: John Smoltz has been talking about this a little bit,
- 10:06Speaker 1: that like these lineups, because they're so deep, they just
- 10:09Speaker 1: shred through bullpens like not great pitchers, and maybe Boone
- 10:14Speaker 1: felt like they had a better shot with that going
- 10:17Speaker 1: into the game as well as like Louise Heield looked
- 10:20Speaker 1: pretty good, like he's been pretty well rested, and he
- 10:23Speaker 1: did a pretty good job of limiting walks and staying
- 10:26Speaker 1: in the game, staying in the counts, and ultimately, like
- 10:29Speaker 1: in Game four, I was kind of surprised that Dave
- 10:32Speaker 1: Roberts didn't go with a quicker hook on Daniel Hudson.
- 10:35Speaker 1: It was very evident in that third inning that Hudson
- 10:38Speaker 1: did not have anything going for him, that he was
- 10:42Speaker 1: struggling to find a groove, struggling to find the zone.
- 10:46Speaker 1: And you know, those four runs were really consequential given
- 10:50Speaker 1: how tight that game was going until the eighth inning.
- 10:52Speaker 1: That I know that that strategy worked for Dave Roberts
- 10:55Speaker 1: and the Dodgers in the NLCS to almost conceive games
- 10:59Speaker 1: by going with suboptimal bullpen usage. But you have to
- 11:03Speaker 1: wonder if that comes back to bite them here in
- 11:05Speaker 1: the World Series against a significantly better Yankees team.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Yeah, and you do a good point there. It'll be
- 11:10Speaker 2: interesting to see even with tonight's game with you or
- 11:13Speaker 2: Yankees jump out to a lead, like do the Dodgers
- 11:15Speaker 2: kind of say, we are keeping all of our best pitchers,
- 11:19Speaker 2: giving them rest, getting them a chance, and so we're
- 11:21Speaker 2: gonna throughout the back of the bullpen. We're going against
- 11:24Speaker 2: Cole here, let's kind of still give it a shot,
- 11:29Speaker 2: but let's live to have our absolute best another day.
- 11:32Speaker 2: So we'll see. I will I'm gonna still say I'm
- 11:37Speaker 2: gonna take the Yankees just because I feel like I
- 11:40Speaker 2: to the for the Dodger. I owe it to the
- 11:42Speaker 2: Dodgers at this point to keep the jinks going the
- 11:46Speaker 2: opposite way. But I think that the paintings on the
- 11:50Speaker 2: wall at this point in time.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Well, I mean, yeah, if there's one way to maybe
- 11:53Speaker 1: open up that twenty sixteen portal to hell that the
- 11:56Speaker 1: Cubs opened a comeback for by the Yankees in seven
- 12:00Speaker 1: games for the first down three nothing comeback in the
- 12:04Speaker 1: World Series, that might do it. Which yeah, ooh boy, yeah,
- 12:09Speaker 1: and yes, Fordy Freeman.
- 12:10Speaker 2: Still gonna be the MVP, like the Yankey's winning. Fredy
- 12:14Speaker 2: Fruman gets MVP for Rhanton and home runs seven straight
- 12:16Speaker 2: World Series games.
- 12:17Speaker 1: I mean, at this point, like, if they do turn
- 12:20Speaker 1: around Jazz, it's got to be in the talks too.
- 12:21Speaker 1: He had a big old tonight those three stolen bases.
- 12:24Speaker 1: He's looked much more lively, and you know, if you
- 12:28Speaker 1: they can get Jazz staying hot like that makes the
- 12:31Speaker 1: Sodo Judge combination even more dangerous because if you have
- 12:36Speaker 1: both of them on base and Jazz is locked in, yikes.
- 12:41Speaker 1: One thing I we didn't bring up that I did
- 12:42Speaker 1: want to cover is Walker Buehler. Like, I know you've
- 12:46Speaker 1: always been in on Walker Bueler and loved him, and
- 12:49Speaker 1: he looked pretty good in the NLCS start, But that
- 12:51Speaker 1: World Series start was vintage stuff from him. Is it
- 12:55Speaker 1: something you think he can keep rolling into next season?
- 12:58Speaker 1: He is a free agent, so so I mean, if
- 13:00Speaker 1: he doesn't pitch again, that could really be a pretty
- 13:04Speaker 1: nice feather in his cap going into negotiations. But did
- 13:09Speaker 1: Walker Buehler show you like enough that like going forward
- 13:12Speaker 1: in twenty twenty five From a fantasy perspective, you're getting
- 13:15Speaker 1: bought back in.
- 13:16Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it does, you know, give you a
- 13:19Speaker 2: little bit of hope because you know, he's coming off
- 13:21Speaker 2: the injury, like really, like I want to say, coming
- 13:23Speaker 2: off the injury right now, but like it some of
- 13:26Speaker 2: those those arm entries takes some time to really kind
- 13:29Speaker 2: of build all the way back up, and it does
- 13:31Speaker 2: feel like that's what he's doing and he's still figuring
- 13:34Speaker 2: things out. It's it's gonna take some time. And Buehler's
- 13:38Speaker 2: always been a great pitcher when fully healthy, and so
- 13:41Speaker 2: it's just a matter of, like can he sustain it.
- 13:44Speaker 2: So I do think it gives me a little bit
- 13:45Speaker 2: of tick up the draft board next year. And I'm
- 13:47Speaker 2: not moving into like my top ten by any means
- 13:49Speaker 2: or anything, but I definitely think, you know, he's a
- 13:52Speaker 2: little bit intriguing, especially because people are gonna look at
- 13:54Speaker 2: his full season numbers. Right one World Series games where
- 13:57Speaker 2: you pitch five innings. This isn't gonna be you know,
- 14:00Speaker 2: what people remember they should, but it's you know, they're
- 14:04Speaker 2: gonna look at those season stats and said, man, he
- 14:06Speaker 2: still is trying to figure out. Yeah, he had a
- 14:08Speaker 2: good game or two in the postseason.
- 14:10Speaker 1: So I think that he.
- 14:11Speaker 2: Actually might be attempting steal at the at the draft table.
- 14:13Speaker 2: Still some risk, but you're right, I do like myself
- 14:17Speaker 2: some Walker Bueller, So I'll probably have a few shares
- 14:19Speaker 2: next year.
- 14:20Speaker 1: Yeah, and he is coming off the second Tommy John.
- 14:23Speaker 1: He had the first one back in college at Vandy,
- 14:25Speaker 1: So there's that factor with that rehab that's taken him.
- 14:29Speaker 1: I mean, he's a year and a half I think
- 14:31Speaker 1: removed from the TJ if I'm right. And then on
- 14:35Speaker 1: top of it to like, yeah, it'll be interesting to
- 14:38Speaker 1: see what the twenty twenty five projections kind of kick
- 14:41Speaker 1: out for him, because that's what's gonna really dictate. I
- 14:44Speaker 1: think his price is, like it's gonna involve a lot
- 14:47Speaker 1: of that for twenty twenty four effort that he put up,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and you know, the projections might not quite pick up
- 14:53Speaker 1: what he did in the World Series. We also, we
- 14:56Speaker 1: haven't talked about the Otani shoulder injuries, so we kind
- 15:00Speaker 1: of have avoided it, maybe because it does make me
- 15:03Speaker 1: a little sad and a little worried. Although tonight he
- 15:06Speaker 1: looked a little better that he wasn't like holding up
- 15:08Speaker 1: his left arm while he was running around the bases,
- 15:11Speaker 1: looking like he was kind of in a sling, it
- 15:13Speaker 1: was a little freer and looser. But if you're not aware,
- 15:17Speaker 1: in Game three, Otani was stealing second base and when
- 15:23Speaker 1: he went down to the ground to slide feet first
- 15:26Speaker 1: into the base, the way that he slides, it's a
- 15:29Speaker 1: little bit of like an interesting setup, partly born of
- 15:32Speaker 1: like his roots from playing in Japanese baseball, but also
- 15:37Speaker 1: he's developed that slide over time to protect his pitching arm,
- 15:40Speaker 1: so like that's why he doesn't ever slide face first,
- 15:43Speaker 1: because he's never wanting to mess with those little fingies
- 15:46Speaker 1: and making sure that they're getting jammed up. So when
- 15:50Speaker 1: he fell back, I mean I thought maybe it was
- 15:52Speaker 1: like a broken wrist or a forearm or elbow issue,
- 15:55Speaker 1: which would have been really terrible, But sounds like it
- 15:58Speaker 1: was just a much more minor subluxation of the shoulder
- 16:02Speaker 1: as opposed to a complete separation. But if you recall,
- 16:06Speaker 1: this is pretty similar I think to what Fernando Tatist
- 16:09Speaker 1: Junior was dealing with before he had that ped suspension
- 16:13Speaker 1: then had the left shoulder surgery during that suspension. This
- 16:18Speaker 1: is Otani's left arm, which is gonna be less problematic
- 16:22Speaker 1: for him as a batter. It's more problematic as your
- 16:24Speaker 1: front lead arm. So that's why it really sapped Fernando
- 16:27Speaker 1: Tatis's Junior's power. But what I think you can see
- 16:31Speaker 1: where I'm teeing you up for this question, But like,
- 16:34Speaker 1: are you worried about Otani in a longer term situation
- 16:37Speaker 1: here with his shoulder that like it's popped out once
- 16:41Speaker 1: And I've known people in my life that have had
- 16:43Speaker 1: this where like, once it pops out, it just keeps
- 16:46Speaker 1: popping out until you get it surgically fixed for now,
- 16:49Speaker 1: and Tatist Junior can attest to this too, So what
- 16:52Speaker 1: do you think that this could do for Otani going forward?
- 16:56Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it can maybe a little, like I
- 16:59Speaker 2: was asterisk on his value, but he's still by far
- 17:03Speaker 2: the number one player that you look to take off
- 17:05Speaker 2: draft boards. You know, you got a top ten pitcher,
- 17:09Speaker 2: you got arguably a top two hitter or top one hitter.
- 17:11Speaker 2: I don't know how you want to look at it.
- 17:14Speaker 2: And if he's got a little injury risk, okay, so
- 17:16Speaker 2: he's still the best player on the draft board. So
- 17:20Speaker 2: I don't think it's really gonna change much for me
- 17:22Speaker 2: at this point in time. Yeah, there's a hint of
- 17:24Speaker 2: a little risk there something something could happen, but that
- 17:28Speaker 2: the same could be said for anybody, So I'm not
- 17:30Speaker 2: you know, if it was maybe mid season, I might
- 17:32Speaker 2: be a little bit more cautious for the rest of
- 17:34Speaker 2: the season. But we're talking he's got maybe three games
- 17:38Speaker 2: left and then he's gonna rest that thing, and he's
- 17:41Speaker 2: gonna make sure he's healthy. He's gonna be finishing rehabbing
- 17:44Speaker 2: to get back on the mound like he's gonna be
- 17:47Speaker 2: making sure he takes it easy and healthy for next year.
- 17:49Speaker 2: So I'm not I'm not terribly concerned. I think this
- 17:53Speaker 2: is one of those things we probably wouldn't even been
- 17:55Speaker 2: talking about. If it was during the regular season, he
- 17:57Speaker 2: probably would have tweaked his shoulder a little bit, taken
- 18:00Speaker 2: a few days off just to kind of get over
- 18:02Speaker 2: some soreness, and been back in the game, and we
- 18:03Speaker 2: probably woudn't even been talking about this. So I think
- 18:06Speaker 2: it's just it happens to be the World Series, and
- 18:08Speaker 2: so it's got a little extra focus because of the
- 18:10Speaker 2: show he Otani and it's the World Series. So I'm
- 18:14Speaker 2: not too concerned. Maybe I'm a glass half full on
- 18:16Speaker 2: this one, but I'll look past it.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think it's a little tough to
- 18:22Speaker 1: figure it out fully just because of like there's a
- 18:24Speaker 1: fog of war situation going on here with baseball espionage
- 18:28Speaker 1: where they're not going to fully disclose the extent of
- 18:31Speaker 1: the damage to the shoulder and the World Series, as
- 18:33Speaker 1: you know, the Dodgers want to keep the Yankees guessing here.
- 18:38Speaker 1: And I mean Otani has batted lead off the past
- 18:41Speaker 1: two games. In the first game of in his first
- 18:43Speaker 1: set bat of Game four, took a took a walk
- 18:46Speaker 1: right off the bat, and ever since then, the Yankees
- 18:49Speaker 1: have started kind of peppering the zone. In his first
- 18:51Speaker 1: set bat tonight, Otani swung at the first fastball from
- 18:55Speaker 1: Garrett Cole and honestly didn't miss it by much. So
- 18:59Speaker 1: it does look like he's maybe he's on the mend.
- 19:02Speaker 1: And yeah, I think I'm signing with you here a
- 19:05Speaker 1: little bit that if it wasn't during the regular season,
- 19:07Speaker 1: maybe it would be like a ten day iel stent
- 19:10Speaker 1: and we get a little more information on the shoulder.
- 19:12Speaker 1: But until we hear anything is supremely wrong with it,
- 19:17Speaker 1: that I think you gotta kind of chalk it up
- 19:21Speaker 1: to just your standard, you know, Nix and knacks from
- 19:25Speaker 1: playing baseball every day for six straight months. That you know,
- 19:29Speaker 1: guys get beat up here and there, and thankfully you'll
- 19:31Speaker 1: have that an offseason to rested after these next few games.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, so well we'll see.
- 19:37Speaker 1: You're right.
- 19:37Speaker 2: You never know, you might get out of the World
- 19:38Speaker 2: Series here and get a big bombshell that his shoulder
- 19:41Speaker 2: actually was no longer attached. I don't know, but we'll see.
- 19:46Speaker 1: All right, Well, the Yankees have tacked on another run.
- 19:49Speaker 1: They're up five to nothing. Gian Carlos Stanton went deep.
- 19:52Speaker 1: So it is really unraveling for the Dodgers because all
- 19:56Speaker 1: the big bats are getting hot now and like that's
- 19:59Speaker 1: that's no brain for them, although they will have the
- 20:01Speaker 1: rest of pitching staff. We will talk about it next
- 20:04Speaker 1: week when for sure the World Series will be wrapped up.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Whether or not America still exists, that's another question. We
- 20:10Speaker 1: will check in on that next week. But we actually
- 20:13Speaker 1: have another piece of news here that's actually like affecting
- 20:18Speaker 1: our discussion here that we have a real move that happened,
- 20:23Speaker 1: as Will Venable has been hired now as the head
- 20:26Speaker 1: coach for the Chicago White Sox, taking over for Grady Sizemore.
- 20:30Speaker 1: Venable has been a bench coach for the Texas Rangers,
- 20:34Speaker 1: was there during that World Series run last year under
- 20:36Speaker 1: Bruce Bochie. He's been getting lots and lots of kind
- 20:40Speaker 1: of talk for being a future head coach and manager,
- 20:44Speaker 1: and so it was only kind of a matter of
- 20:47Speaker 1: time before Venable found a landing spot. Also kind of
- 20:51Speaker 1: seems like one of those guys where a little bit
- 20:53Speaker 1: of like Skip Shoemaker when he got hired by the Marlins,
- 20:56Speaker 1: that like, if he wanted to be in on the
- 20:58Speaker 1: Will Venable your manager action, Maybe he is a year
- 21:02Speaker 1: or two away from like being fully like vetted and
- 21:07Speaker 1: groomed and ready to go for it. But you know
- 21:09Speaker 1: you got to jump on him early if you're the
- 21:11Speaker 1: White Sox to give him that opportunity. So what do
- 21:14Speaker 1: you think that this could portend for the Chicago White
- 21:17Speaker 1: Sox And how long before we get a joke or
- 21:22Speaker 1: any questions from the media about when when Will Venable
- 21:25Speaker 1: will be inserting himself into the lineup because he's not
- 21:28Speaker 1: that far from being retired.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yeah, Vinible, I think forty two. So Jamie Moyer thinks
- 21:35Speaker 2: he's young, but it's you know, I like the higher.
- 21:39Speaker 1: I think it's a good move to your point.
- 21:41Speaker 2: You know, it maybe is a year or too early
- 21:44Speaker 2: for Vinable, but he's he's one of those that's a
- 21:47Speaker 2: kind of an up and rising coach everybody. He was
- 21:50Speaker 2: in the running for the Marlins job as well. He's
- 21:52Speaker 2: done the running for a few other jobs in the
- 21:53Speaker 2: past few years. So I think that portrends well. I
- 21:58Speaker 2: was very interested just to see if which side of
- 22:00Speaker 2: the coin the White Socks were gonna go, if they
- 22:02Speaker 2: were gonna go old veteran for some stability and expertise,
- 22:07Speaker 2: kind of like two different conover in Cincinnati, and then
- 22:10Speaker 2: it seemed like Phil Nevian was trying to sneak his
- 22:12Speaker 2: way into the conversation as well. And you know, hey,
- 22:16Speaker 2: the White Socks have tried that before with this guy
- 22:18Speaker 2: called Antonio Larusa, so that clearly didn't play well. So
- 22:22Speaker 2: I like the move here because this is gonna be
- 22:25Speaker 2: a young team and they kind of need somebody I
- 22:28Speaker 2: think that's gonna relate to them and not be three
- 22:32Speaker 2: times four times their age trying to coach. I think
- 22:36Speaker 2: Vinible is still close enough to the game. He's, like
- 22:38Speaker 2: I said, he's not too far retired here that he's
- 22:42Speaker 2: gonna be really well connected to these players and be
- 22:45Speaker 2: able to kind of groom them and take what you
- 22:48Speaker 2: can probably say is ragdad group here and try to
- 22:51Speaker 2: pull them together. Because the White Socks aren't winning on
- 22:53Speaker 2: skill alone. They're gonna have to win anoxie and teamwork.
- 22:56Speaker 2: So I like the move. I think Vinible will be
- 22:59Speaker 2: given some lead to run here in Chicago. I sure hope,
- 23:02Speaker 2: because I think he has a lot of potential. I
- 23:04Speaker 2: am frankly surprised that Schumacher was knocked out of running
- 23:06Speaker 2: so fast, but hey, it's it's gonna be interesting to
- 23:10Speaker 2: see that maybe one of the hottest names from the
- 23:12Speaker 2: coaching circuit doesn't land a manager job this year, with
- 23:15Speaker 2: Schumacher striking out in Cincinnati.
- 23:18Speaker 1: In Chicago, yeah, I mean, I would be fascinated to
- 23:22Speaker 1: see that behind the scenes discussions that have happened for
- 23:25Speaker 1: this managerial search. I mean, I thought it was all
- 23:28Speaker 1: kind of a farce that they were gonna end up
- 23:30Speaker 1: just going with Grady Sizemore and calling it a day.
- 23:33Speaker 1: But yeah, especially with Skip Schumacher, you wonder like who
- 23:38Speaker 1: pulled the plug on that that. You know, this is
- 23:41Speaker 1: a tough managerial spot to fill that. You know, you
- 23:45Speaker 1: had to find somebody who wanted to prove themselves a
- 23:48Speaker 1: little bit like Venable and or you know, go another
- 23:51Speaker 1: route in terms of something internal, which not like the
- 23:54Speaker 1: White Sox have anything there, or just like some sort
- 23:58Speaker 1: of old breech red, which, like you said, that's not
- 24:00Speaker 1: gonna be how Chris Getz saves his job here at
- 24:03Speaker 1: the end of the gate of the day that like
- 24:05Speaker 1: Jerry Reinsdorff and the rest of that ownership group is
- 24:09Speaker 1: going to have an end to the leash that gets
- 24:11Speaker 1: gets eventually. Yeah, I guess will be interesting to see
- 24:14Speaker 1: what Venable can kind of what life he can breathe
- 24:17Speaker 1: into this team. There's gonna be a lot of work
- 24:20Speaker 1: for the White Sox to do in the off season
- 24:22Speaker 1: and lots of just like structural issues that that the
- 24:26Speaker 1: organization's got to deal with before they can even start
- 24:29Speaker 1: like thinking about competing. Because the prospect load is good,
- 24:34Speaker 1: but like I'm not sure if they've got the pieces
- 24:37Speaker 1: in place to develop them and bring them through that.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Like we've seen Colson Montgomery struggle this year and be injured.
- 24:45Speaker 1: But that's the White Sox mo that they seem to
- 24:48Speaker 1: not be able to develop guys or keep them healthy.
- 24:50Speaker 1: So it'll be interesting to see how it all pulls
- 24:53Speaker 1: together here over the off season.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it'll be fun to see one less seat on
- 24:59Speaker 2: the WA and Zuira hot seats. So mar Marlins, what
- 25:03Speaker 2: are you gonna do?
- 25:04Speaker 1: Yeah, exactly. Okay, Well, we're going to take a short break,
- 25:08Speaker 1: but we will be back to discuss some of the
- 25:11Speaker 1: breakouts that we've seen in the Arizona Fall League so far.
- 25:14Speaker 1: Just kind of also discuss the Arizona Fall League in general,
- 25:17Speaker 1: and look at, you know, what sort of prospects we
- 25:20Speaker 1: might be acquiring because of their performances. So stick around,
- 25:40Speaker 1: all right, Welcome back, everybody. So we are going to
- 25:43Speaker 1: talk about the Arizona Fall League and some breakout performances
- 25:46Speaker 1: that we've seen while they've been playing down there in
- 25:49Speaker 1: Phoenix over the past couple of weeks, especially bringing up
- 25:53Speaker 1: because I will be down there in Phoenix this weekend
- 25:56Speaker 1: for First Pitch Arizona watching some of these players play
- 26:00Speaker 1: in between watching the World Series games. It sounds like
- 26:02Speaker 1: now because the Yankees again are still rolling, and if
- 26:06Speaker 1: you're not familiar with what the Arizona Fall League is,
- 26:09Speaker 1: it's a obviously a fall league, and that happens every
- 26:14Speaker 1: October after the season, in which usually the best prospects
- 26:18Speaker 1: within organizations go down there to get a little extra run.
- 26:22Speaker 1: And it's a little bit more of like a Future's
- 26:26Speaker 1: All Star Futures Game environment in terms of lots of
- 26:28Speaker 1: the best prospects are down there, and they're kind of
- 26:31Speaker 1: mixed within each team, so you know, you don't have
- 26:35Speaker 1: a full slate of thirty teams down there in Arizona.
- 26:38Speaker 1: That you've got slim down rosters, So each individual team
- 26:42Speaker 1: sends a handful of players to make up that roster.
- 26:46Speaker 1: And then usually you're getting especially hitters who need just
- 26:49Speaker 1: a little extra work in terms of their development time,
- 26:53Speaker 1: looking to maybe jump the level next year, get a
- 26:55Speaker 1: little extra work in, have been injured as well, like
- 26:58Speaker 1: we have players like When Arroyo from the Cincinnati Reds
- 27:03Speaker 1: who has been injured all year going down there to
- 27:06Speaker 1: get some extra work in. And then the pitching side,
- 27:09Speaker 1: it usually features players who are, you know, a little
- 27:13Speaker 1: bit closer to the major leagues. I would say that
- 27:15Speaker 1: this year the crop of pitching has been really subpar.
- 27:19Speaker 1: That like from the reports I've been reading, and you
- 27:21Speaker 1: can see it in the stats. I will link to
- 27:24Speaker 1: that in the show notes so that you can check
- 27:26Speaker 1: it out there. The just all the stats that have
- 27:30Speaker 1: happened to the Fall League you will see when you
- 27:32Speaker 1: scroll through it. On the pitching side, it took me.
- 27:35Speaker 1: I mean, I don't know if I have recognized more
- 27:38Speaker 1: than like one out of every twenty pitchers. Like it
- 27:41Speaker 1: is a real grab bag of players who are developing pitches.
- 27:46Speaker 1: I think is a lot what's going on this year
- 27:48Speaker 1: or like just testing out new things. So with that caveat,
- 27:53Speaker 1: keep in mind as we discuss these things, a lot
- 27:55Speaker 1: of these stats are kind of wonky. But with that,
- 27:58Speaker 1: you know, we've still had some reports back on good
- 28:01Speaker 1: players and good performances. Obviously also playing in the altitude
- 28:04Speaker 1: and desert environment of Phoenix, so there's a lot of
- 28:08Speaker 1: offensive heavy games. And so with all that in mind, Brewer, is,
- 28:14Speaker 1: are you kind of looking for anything individually in a
- 28:17Speaker 1: stat line or from a scout report that comes out
- 28:20Speaker 1: of the Fall League that really peaks your interest for
- 28:24Speaker 1: dynasty keeper leagues or going into twenty twenty five Fantasy
- 28:27Speaker 1: draft next year.
- 28:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, you know, I'm really looking the Fall League.
- 28:31Speaker 2: You know, it's they're probably two things. One, the prospects
- 28:36Speaker 2: that are getting their first kind of cup of tea
- 28:39Speaker 2: with the Fall League, the younger guys maybe facing a
- 28:42Speaker 2: little bit steeper competition because it isn't just like double
- 28:46Speaker 2: A or Triple A guys. It's kind of a smattering
- 28:49Speaker 2: of guys. So seeing some of those younger guys could
- 28:51Speaker 2: get for one of the first times get tested against
- 28:54Speaker 2: arguably some better competition. Now you just did just call
- 28:56Speaker 2: out the pitching competition may not be necessarily better this
- 29:00Speaker 2: year around, but I am looking for one of those
- 29:03Speaker 2: guys that are, you know, showing their metal and maybe
- 29:07Speaker 2: potentially above kind of their prospect grade at this point,
- 29:10Speaker 2: and is that going to get them a bump up
- 29:12Speaker 2: next year on the minor league ladder. Then the other
- 29:15Speaker 2: thing I'm looking at is those guys that are on
- 29:17Speaker 2: kind of the precipice of the major leagues and whether
- 29:19Speaker 2: they're trying a new tool or they're just trying to
- 29:23Speaker 2: show that yes, I am absolutely ready and the team
- 29:26Speaker 2: just wanted to get one more look, and they're trying
- 29:28Speaker 2: a different position, or they're trying you know, they're trying something.
- 29:31Speaker 1: Now.
- 29:31Speaker 2: I think Matt mclaine's a really good example for the
- 29:33Speaker 2: Reds this year. They're trying Mountain center field and they're
- 29:36Speaker 2: trying to get him some exposure there because they need
- 29:38Speaker 2: more help from the outfield, and so that's something to
- 29:41Speaker 2: be watching for, a potential change in value for a
- 29:45Speaker 2: guy like Matt McClane who can get some multi positional eligibility.
- 29:48Speaker 2: So those are kind of the two things that I'm
- 29:50Speaker 2: really looking for here. And you know, frankly, maybe you
- 29:54Speaker 2: just get lucky and find some guy that you haven't
- 29:55Speaker 2: really heard of kind of breaking out and showing you
- 29:58Speaker 2: something that you might almost want to pay atention to
- 30:00Speaker 2: next spring. So those are the kind of things that
- 30:02Speaker 2: I'm looking for. Is there any any one thing that
- 30:04Speaker 2: you're kind of honed in on that you're looking for
- 30:08Speaker 2: or is it kind of in the same vein.
- 30:10Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it's in the same vein. And I
- 30:13Speaker 1: think this is also a time when scouting reports are
- 30:16Speaker 1: pretty important too, So like a lot of these players
- 30:20Speaker 1: that we're discussing from great offensive performances have also I've
- 30:24Speaker 1: read scouting reports either from Baseball Prospectus or Keith Law
- 30:29Speaker 1: or Eric Longenhangen where they have also given like a
- 30:33Speaker 1: thumbs up on the player and said you know, he's
- 30:36Speaker 1: been looking great during these ball league appearances that the
- 30:39Speaker 1: eye has been looking good, especially with these young players,
- 30:42Speaker 1: Like you're just testing, like can they hit upper level
- 30:46Speaker 1: pitching in terms of like you know, not only the velocity,
- 30:49Speaker 1: but lots of different spin. You know, in the lower levels,
- 30:52Speaker 1: some of these guys are in the DSL, the Dominican
- 30:56Speaker 1: League or the Florida Complex leagues and barely seeing in
- 31:00Speaker 1: you know, great kind of major league quality sinker or
- 31:05Speaker 1: not sinker sliders and curveballs and things like that, so
- 31:07Speaker 1: it's big for them to see them in the Fall league.
- 31:10Speaker 1: And then the other thing is like I'm kind of
- 31:13Speaker 1: viewing all these stats with like a grain of salt
- 31:18Speaker 1: the way you would almost in spring training, where like
- 31:21Speaker 1: lots of wonky environments, lots of people trying stuff out,
- 31:24Speaker 1: and so you're looking at things that stabilize pretty quickly
- 31:28Speaker 1: and kind of show a skill, especially at the plate.
- 31:31Speaker 1: So I'm looking at walk in k rates especially just
- 31:34Speaker 1: to see, you know, is this player striking out too
- 31:37Speaker 1: much on either side, Like is the picture generating strikeouts
- 31:40Speaker 1: or is the hitter not getting enough contact? And then
- 31:43Speaker 1: same thing with walks, so you know, if they can
- 31:46Speaker 1: handle that plate discipline and show improvement there, then it
- 31:49Speaker 1: can usually turn into better things down the line. But yeah,
- 31:55Speaker 1: with all that kind of caveat and intro, we're going
- 31:58Speaker 1: to focus mostly on hitters. We've got seven hitters lined
- 32:02Speaker 1: up to discuss, is that right, two, four, six, seven,
- 32:05Speaker 1: and then but we will just touch on a few
- 32:09Speaker 1: pitchers who I think have stood out, because, like I said,
- 32:12Speaker 1: a lot of these guys I don't know if they're
- 32:14Speaker 1: going to be significant players in Major League Baseball going
- 32:16Speaker 1: to twenty twenty five or for the fantasy side either so,
- 32:21Speaker 1: but there are a few. The name that really stands
- 32:24Speaker 1: out at the top of the list is Philly's big
- 32:28Speaker 1: time prospect, number one prospect, Andrew Painter. Has been down
- 32:32Speaker 1: there rehabbing in the Fall League and has looked pretty good.
- 32:35Speaker 1: So I looked up these stats yesterday. I'll go live
- 32:39Speaker 1: with the results from last night's games when we get
- 32:44Speaker 1: into the batters. But on the pitching side, Andrew Painter
- 32:47Speaker 1: has thrown seven innings, made three starts with a three
- 32:50Speaker 1: eighty six earra, a one whip seven to one K
- 32:54Speaker 1: to walk, and by all reports, looks like he's sitting
- 32:59Speaker 1: pretty well on the radar ground between seventy around like
- 33:02Speaker 1: ninety seven touching up to ninety nine. So that is
- 33:05Speaker 1: really what you're looking for in Painter as he's coming
- 33:08Speaker 1: back from Tommy and John surgery, has good control, has
- 33:12Speaker 1: good velocity. So with those coming together, Brew, are you
- 33:16Speaker 1: looking for Painter to be a dark horse to break
- 33:20Speaker 1: camp with the Phillies in twenty twenty five? Yeah?
- 33:23Speaker 2: I think so. I mean it's if it wasn't for injuries,
- 33:25Speaker 2: he'd be in the majors the last two years, right,
- 33:28Speaker 2: And I think that, you know, you get to this point,
- 33:31Speaker 2: there's not development that they're looking for for Andrew Painter.
- 33:33Speaker 2: They're looking to see if he's fully healthy and he
- 33:37Speaker 2: has everything back to where he was, and that's what
- 33:42Speaker 2: they're hoping. And so I think that there he's showing
- 33:45Speaker 2: in the Fall League that yeah, he's he deserves a
- 33:48Speaker 2: role in that in that rotation, and he's going to
- 33:52Speaker 2: be I wouldn't say a dark horse to get a spot.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I think he's gonna say I need a spot, I
- 33:57Speaker 2: deserve a spot. And then from a fantasy perspective, that
- 34:00Speaker 2: makes him a really really intriguing dart throw because he's
- 34:03Speaker 2: gonna he's gonna rise up dashboards or dashboards draft boards
- 34:10Speaker 2: really quickly in the spring, if you know, if he
- 34:13Speaker 2: is showing healthy and getting a few of those springs starts.
- 34:15Speaker 2: So I think this is exciting for Patriots. To your point,
- 34:18Speaker 2: he's probably a minimum boys right now in the Fall League.
- 34:21Speaker 2: He's probably one of the best players out there. So
- 34:25Speaker 2: I'm not reading too much into the stat line per se.
- 34:28Speaker 2: I'm reading more into the velocity and the fact that
- 34:31Speaker 2: he's out there, the control is sticking around. Those are
- 34:35Speaker 2: the things I'm looking for, and you gotta be absolutely
- 34:37Speaker 2: tickled if you're a Phillies fan for what he can
- 34:39Speaker 2: bring next year.
- 34:41Speaker 1: Yeah, I totally agree. So I think everything right there
- 34:44Speaker 1: is spot on. You're looking at, like essentially young Justin Furlander,
- 34:47Speaker 1: I think an enter painters. So it's just kind of
- 34:50Speaker 1: a matter of time of when he breaks into the
- 34:52Speaker 1: major leagues. I think next picture that I want to
- 34:55Speaker 1: cover is just it's been quite a standout performance and
- 35:00Speaker 1: a cap on what has been a middling year, I
- 35:05Speaker 1: would say for this picture, but like in front of
- 35:07Speaker 1: this great competition with a tough, you know, pitturing environment.
- 35:12Speaker 1: Josh Stefan for the I've never even heard of him
- 35:15Speaker 1: before I was looking at these stats for the Texas Rangers.
- 35:19Speaker 1: Twenty two year old has put up a point seven
- 35:22Speaker 1: one ear ra, a point eighty seven whip, twelve strikeouts
- 35:25Speaker 1: to three k's in twelve and two thirds innings. He's
- 35:28Speaker 1: thrown the second most innings down there in the Fall League.
- 35:32Speaker 1: And so this is I just kind of wanted to
- 35:35Speaker 1: put him on people's radars because this is the type
- 35:38Speaker 1: of performance from the pitching side where it does start
- 35:41Speaker 1: standing out to me. You know, he is a twenty
- 35:44Speaker 1: two year old, so he's already a little young for
- 35:47Speaker 1: the level at Double A and has been you know,
- 35:51Speaker 1: around like a forty grade prospect for Fangrafts and other outlets.
- 35:55Speaker 1: But this is the type of performance where you know,
- 35:58Speaker 1: in front of bigger, tough pitching environment that it stands
- 36:04Speaker 1: out that like, this is a guy that I'm certainly
- 36:06Speaker 1: watched the listing in Dynasty leagues and maybe anything else
- 36:09Speaker 1: that you see in Stefan's profile that intrigues you specifically,
- 36:13Speaker 1: or are there other hallmarks in his performance that would
- 36:17Speaker 1: make you kind of add players of this ilk to
- 36:21Speaker 1: year scouting reports for your dynasty leagues or not your
- 36:24Speaker 1: scouting reports you're watchless.
- 36:26Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he does have some of those hallmarks.
- 36:29Speaker 2: You know, this year his strikeouts did drop a little bit,
- 36:32Speaker 2: but throughout, you know, every other year he's been kind
- 36:35Speaker 2: of a ten K or nine type of guy. Control
- 36:38Speaker 2: has seemed pretty reasonable, does a good job keeping the
- 36:42Speaker 2: ball on the ground. He like I said, this year
- 36:44Speaker 2: was kind of a step back for him, and so
- 36:46Speaker 2: that's kind of what I'm I'm excited to see him
- 36:48Speaker 2: doing better in the Fall League here, so it'll be
- 36:50Speaker 2: interesting to see what he portrends into into next season.
- 36:55Speaker 2: But yeah, he's he's not a guy wh'm going out
- 36:57Speaker 2: and like eyeing or grabbing or anything like that. And
- 37:00Speaker 2: in a deep league, but definitely one I'm kind of
- 37:03Speaker 2: watching because you can see the ingredients there. But it's
- 37:07Speaker 2: it's kind of hard to tell if he is just
- 37:10Speaker 2: kind of pitching above the competition and you know, a
- 37:14Speaker 2: little bit more mature than the competition, or if he
- 37:16Speaker 2: actually has really really good stuff. So I think that's
- 37:19Speaker 2: what'll be fun to see. To your point, with kind
- 37:22Speaker 2: of the varied schemes in the Fall League, it's hard
- 37:25Speaker 2: to put a whole lot of stock into the twelve
- 37:27Speaker 2: innings that he's put in there, but it's it's definitely
- 37:31Speaker 2: put him on notice of like I should at least
- 37:33Speaker 2: check in on him every so often going into twenty
- 37:36Speaker 2: twenty five.
- 37:37Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean part of it too is he's
- 37:39Speaker 1: been rehabbing. He had a I think a stress fracture
- 37:43Speaker 1: in his foot and also dealt with elbow issues throughout
- 37:48Speaker 1: high school. So like maybe he's actually finding it, finding
- 37:51Speaker 1: some health and so like that has been what it's
- 37:54Speaker 1: been holding him back as he's been developing. That he
- 37:57Speaker 1: was a what round did he go in? I can't
- 38:02Speaker 1: find him right now, just stalling while my internet loads
- 38:07Speaker 1: and I type in he might have been a non
- 38:12Speaker 1: draft signy. So that is going to be an intriguing
- 38:18Speaker 1: profile I think going forward for Josh Stephan, and we
- 38:20Speaker 1: will keep an eye on him. But let's get into
- 38:23Speaker 1: those bats we were alluding to, because I think we've
- 38:27Speaker 1: got a mix of like kind of guys we've known
- 38:30Speaker 1: for a while, guys who are I think are breaking out,
- 38:33Speaker 1: and guys who are at the top of prospect lifts,
- 38:36Speaker 1: and some who are towards the bottom. So I'm especially
- 38:40Speaker 1: looking at just like total bases here. That's how I
- 38:43Speaker 1: sorted and found a lot of these players finding great
- 38:46Speaker 1: performances and then also looking kind of like age to
- 38:49Speaker 1: level to make sure that you know they have some
- 38:52Speaker 1: prospect runway still within them. And so the first player
- 38:55Speaker 1: that really has stowed out for me is catcher first
- 38:59Speaker 1: spacemen for the Detroit Tigers, Poseu Brisigno. Brisigno. This is
- 39:06Speaker 1: one of the difficult parts of talking about deep prospect
- 39:11Speaker 1: players and uh, you're doing it before Baseball Reference has
- 39:15Speaker 1: their pronunciation on there. But Brisigno is down in a
- 39:21Speaker 1: ball for the Tigers, was nineteen there all year, so
- 39:26Speaker 1: below level, had a pretty solid year overall, but it's
- 39:30Speaker 1: broken out here as we've gotten into the Arizona Fall League.
- 39:33Speaker 1: He's popped seven homers with sixteen rbi, slashing four forty six,
- 39:38Speaker 1: four ninety two, nine to eleven in his sixty three
- 39:42Speaker 1: at bats. Is one of the younger players down there.
- 39:45Speaker 1: And so what do you see in this this profile
- 39:50Speaker 1: for Brisigho and what do you think that it could
- 39:54Speaker 1: mean for him going forward for his future in Detroit.
- 39:57Speaker 2: Yeah, I think he fits into that one of those
- 39:59Speaker 2: categories we talked about earlier of being young and going
- 40:03Speaker 2: up against some stronger competition because He is just just
- 40:08Speaker 2: barely over twenty years old. He's only played at a
- 40:11Speaker 2: ball and he's he's done decent. I wouldn't say outstanding,
- 40:16Speaker 2: he's done decent this this year in a ball he
- 40:20Speaker 2: had forty games, he had a whole two homers, hit
- 40:24Speaker 2: two seventy eight, on base three eighty three. He actually
- 40:27Speaker 2: does has a pretty patient played approach. So what's interesting
- 40:31Speaker 2: to see him showing off the power of the Fall
- 40:34Speaker 2: League here. I think that's what's exciting is it could
- 40:37Speaker 2: show that there's a little bit more to him, and
- 40:40Speaker 2: I do like that he's again doing it against maybe
- 40:42Speaker 2: some stronger competition. It is small sample size. I think
- 40:46Speaker 2: we we always have to own that with the Fall
- 40:48Speaker 2: League here, but seeing a guy that is definitely a
- 40:51Speaker 2: little bit further down the depth charts in the minors,
- 40:56Speaker 2: Definitely some of his you know, prospects reports and his
- 41:01Speaker 2: development says that he has a low long way to go,
- 41:03Speaker 2: and he's kind of given indication maybe he's a little
- 41:06Speaker 2: bit further along than what folks think and he can
- 41:08Speaker 2: be pushed up the ladder a little bit faster next
- 41:11Speaker 2: year for the Tigers. So I think it's very interesting
- 41:14Speaker 2: to see what he's doing and is he going to
- 41:17Speaker 2: end up being, you know, a catcher. Is he gonna
- 41:19Speaker 2: end up being a first base in her DH? I
- 41:21Speaker 2: think the jury's still still out there, but he's definitely
- 41:24Speaker 2: looked really, really good this fall, probably some of the
- 41:27Speaker 2: best numbers in in the Fall League, and doing that
- 41:32Speaker 2: at just twenty years old, when you know they're I
- 41:35Speaker 2: don't know the average league of the Fall League, but
- 41:37Speaker 2: at average age of the Fall League, but I have
- 41:39Speaker 2: to assume it's in the twenty three to twenty four range.
- 41:43Speaker 2: And so being you know, three to four years younger
- 41:46Speaker 2: than everybody and showing off this way, it's it definitely
- 41:50Speaker 2: puts puts folks on notice. So how about you are
- 41:53Speaker 2: what are you seeing here? Is is he flying up
- 41:56Speaker 2: your dynasty rankings? By chance?
- 41:59Speaker 1: I wouldn't sa flying, but he's certainly moving up that
- 42:03Speaker 1: like he My interest is piqued by what Brissino has
- 42:06Speaker 1: brought for the Tigers in the years in a fall league,
- 42:10Speaker 1: and I mean lots of people were focusing more on
- 42:13Speaker 1: Tyron Grizano, his teammate that came over in the Jack
- 42:18Speaker 1: Flerty trade when the Tigers sold at the deadline, that
- 42:23Speaker 1: he was you know, the number two kind of best
- 42:26Speaker 1: prospect from the catching perspective in the Detroit system behind
- 42:30Speaker 1: the Ronzo, and so that will be interesting to see
- 42:35Speaker 1: if they foot flop now because Bristino is two years younger,
- 42:39Speaker 1: and I mean there's a possibility that, like if he
- 42:43Speaker 1: has really broken out here and has found something an
- 42:46Speaker 1: extra level. He's walked a lot when he's been in
- 42:49Speaker 1: the minors, so that's great to see that he has
- 42:51Speaker 1: a good eye, hasn't struck out a ton, so if
- 42:53Speaker 1: he's finding a little bit of a power stroke again
- 42:57Speaker 1: given that it is Phoenix and all those cavit but
- 43:00Speaker 1: he has looked really good by all the reports that
- 43:03Speaker 1: have come back to so you're looking in the Tigers.
- 43:07Speaker 1: This is where they're actually weak at the major league
- 43:09Speaker 1: level too, at like first base catcher dhi ish area
- 43:15Speaker 1: where both Lorenzo and Brasino could be coming through. So
- 43:19Speaker 1: like there's certainly the pathway to playing time in Detroit.
- 43:23Speaker 1: And so because of that, Brassino is certainly moving up
- 43:27Speaker 1: my rankings a little bit more than I think I
- 43:31Speaker 1: maybe would give other players as they've broken out in
- 43:35Speaker 1: this ball league.
- 43:35Speaker 2: You know, yeah, I think so he's probably one of
- 43:39Speaker 2: the biggest names or biggest standouts in the Fall so far.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Okay, well, we're gonna look at another catcher here, as
- 43:47Speaker 1: it's been just like a really catcher happy offensive breakout
- 43:52Speaker 1: in the Fall League. As that, we're looking at Moysi's
- 43:55Speaker 1: Biasteros for the Chicago Cubs, a twenty year old who
- 43:58Speaker 1: has put up a line of three seventy three, four
- 44:01Speaker 1: oh four seven twenty six. I should also add, yeah,
- 44:05Speaker 1: Brissino is by far the highest lugger at that nine
- 44:08Speaker 1: to eleven slug as Biasteros is also up there. He
- 44:12Speaker 1: has five homers and fourteen RBI. Now Bias Sairos has
- 44:17Speaker 1: a little more pospect pedigree to him. In the Fangrafts
- 44:20Speaker 1: rankings for the Cubs list, he came in at a
- 44:24Speaker 1: fifty grade and that put him at eighth overall on
- 44:28Speaker 1: the list of a very deep team that is a
- 44:30Speaker 1: very deep system. So what are you seeing here in
- 44:34Speaker 1: Biasteros Biosteris' performance in the Fall League and how it's
- 44:38Speaker 1: kind of captus whole twenty twenty four and what do
- 44:41Speaker 1: you see going forward for bias Steros.
- 44:45Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think there's probably a few things
- 44:47Speaker 2: of interest here. First of all, from a you know,
- 44:51Speaker 2: pure hitting perspective.
- 44:53Speaker 1: You know, he's he's spent.
- 44:56Speaker 2: You know, over half the season this year at Triple
- 44:59Speaker 2: A across two levels. He poked nineteen homers, which is
- 45:04Speaker 2: much more than what he can had kind of showed
- 45:06Speaker 2: in the past. So it seems like the power is
- 45:08Speaker 2: truly coming through, and he did overall kind of keep
- 45:13Speaker 2: the strikeouts under control, and they seemed to be wanting.
- 45:17Speaker 2: The second thing is he seemed to be wanting to
- 45:19Speaker 2: try him at you know, that catcher position. He had
- 45:22Speaker 2: been trading between i think first base and catcher a
- 45:27Speaker 2: little bit this season and also a lot of d
- 45:29Speaker 2: H and it looks like they want to try to see, hey,
- 45:32Speaker 2: is he going to play into that catcher conversation in Chicago.
- 45:36Speaker 2: So I think, you know, the power kind of coming
- 45:39Speaker 2: through kind of just reinforces that he really is maturing.
- 45:43Speaker 2: Is that kind of one of those power hitters, And
- 45:46Speaker 2: that's really great, great news for the Cubs. And so
- 45:48Speaker 2: I think he's one of the few guys on our
- 45:51Speaker 2: list here is definitely gonna be in the conversation for
- 45:54Speaker 2: potentially making an opening day roster next year. And you know,
- 46:00Speaker 2: you know, he's not too terribly interesting honestly as the
- 46:03Speaker 2: first baseman. But if he's a catcher, he's come a
- 46:06Speaker 2: lot more interesting if he is showing up with twenty
- 46:09Speaker 2: twenty five home or power and kind of you know,
- 46:11Speaker 2: middling batting average, let's say, probably not a whole lot
- 46:14Speaker 2: of speed to write home about. When I say a
- 46:17Speaker 2: whole lot of speed, probably none. And so he is
- 46:22Speaker 2: very intriguing from the perspective that they do seem to
- 46:25Speaker 2: be committed to him as a catcher, and there's probably
- 46:29Speaker 2: a path to playing time for him if he can
- 46:31Speaker 2: show that this is really who he is versus just
- 46:35Speaker 2: a hot, hot fall league. And I think twenty twenty
- 46:38Speaker 2: four said that, yeah, he's got to these amount of potential.
- 46:40Speaker 2: So but I say that you are the resident of chicagoan,
- 46:44Speaker 2: so tell me tell me that I don't know my
- 46:50Speaker 2: Moses Ballistas.
- 46:52Speaker 1: No, I mean, I think you nailed it. This is
- 46:54Speaker 1: another team just like Detroit with the Cubs, that they
- 46:58Speaker 1: have openings at DH, first base and catcher right now.
- 47:03Speaker 1: I mean, obviously the Cody Bellinger of it all is
- 47:06Speaker 1: going to play in here a little bit. But you know,
- 47:09Speaker 1: Saya Suzuki was dhing a lot down the stretch and
- 47:11Speaker 1: could be moved back into the field. Michael bush Is,
- 47:15Speaker 1: I mean, I think he's kind of more of a
- 47:17Speaker 1: tween year player. And Miguel Maya did not take hold
- 47:21Speaker 1: of that catching job in Chicago, so Bias Teros especially,
- 47:25Speaker 1: this is a Cubs team that could overtake the division
- 47:29Speaker 1: pretty easily with a couple of pitching moves. And if
- 47:32Speaker 1: you're trying to catch lightning in a bottle and Biosteris
- 47:35Speaker 1: is your best catcher out of camp, Yeah, he could
- 47:37Speaker 1: break camp. And he's definitely debuting next year no matter what.
- 47:41Speaker 1: He's got a Rule five eligibility, I think in December,
- 47:44Speaker 1: and so I think given that he reached triple A
- 47:47Speaker 1: this year, held his own in triple A while being
- 47:50Speaker 1: like six years younger than the level on average, that
- 47:54Speaker 1: I think you're looking at, you know, your gut to
- 47:57Speaker 1: talk about like Samuel Bissio and then Biased Zaros right
- 48:00Speaker 1: next to him. In terms of dynasty catchers who haven't
- 48:04Speaker 1: debuted yet. I mean, if you're looking h to level,
- 48:07Speaker 1: I think you've even got to be considering by the
- 48:09Speaker 1: stereos over Sawas at this point, over Ethan Salas just
- 48:12Speaker 1: because of like who knows how many much more seasoning
- 48:15Speaker 1: Solace will need. But bias Terios is on the precipice
- 48:18Speaker 1: of making the Chicago Cubs roster and being I think
- 48:22Speaker 1: a pretty good bat at catcher. Even I think he's
- 48:26Speaker 1: gonna stick at catcher. He's not the best defensive catcher,
- 48:29Speaker 1: but he's five to eight, one ninety five. I don't
- 48:31Speaker 1: think that's going to play too well at first base.
- 48:33Speaker 1: And even if he, like something happens and he just
- 48:38Speaker 1: can't catch, like, you can worry about that in twenty
- 48:40Speaker 1: twenty six, because he's going to qualify at catcher in
- 48:42Speaker 1: twenty twenty five.
- 48:45Speaker 2: Yeah, He's one of the few here that I think
- 48:48Speaker 2: if you're have off season potential to grab somebody, you
- 48:51Speaker 2: would probably be worth taking a flyer up.
- 48:54Speaker 1: Yes, I totally agree. Okay, next guy that we have
- 48:57Speaker 1: is somebody who's been around for a long time now
- 49:00Speaker 1: in our collective kind of thoughts of like, you know,
- 49:04Speaker 1: baseball players and the prospects at large, and that is
- 49:10Speaker 1: Robert Hassel the third who is breaking out here a
- 49:14Speaker 1: little bit in the Fall League, has been studying himself,
- 49:17Speaker 1: slashing two eighty six, three sixty five, five eighteen the strikeouts,
- 49:22Speaker 1: have been looking pretty relatively good twelve strikeouts to six
- 49:26Speaker 1: walks in his sixty three played appearances as pop two
- 49:29Speaker 1: homers driven in thirteen and this comes off of a
- 49:33Speaker 1: I would say a tough year for Robert Hassel in
- 49:37Speaker 1: terms of he only hit five homers across his three
- 49:40Speaker 1: minor league levels, and those are all in double A.
- 49:43Speaker 1: He's twenty two years old. He is just kind of
- 49:47Speaker 1: like running out of runway in terms of being a
- 49:51Speaker 1: prospect much longer. The reports have all been kind of
- 49:54Speaker 1: down on his power as he's kind of become more
- 49:57Speaker 1: of a hit only kind of tool. I think he's
- 50:00Speaker 1: got a glove too, so he will be able to
- 50:03Speaker 1: stick from a glove perspective. But this was a guy
- 50:06Speaker 1: who went in the twenty twenty first round, eighth overall
- 50:09Speaker 1: pick to the Padres, was involved in the Wan Soto
- 50:12Speaker 1: trade and was really a key piece of that and
- 50:17Speaker 1: looks like he might be forming into like Clint Frazier
- 50:20Speaker 1: in front of us. But does this fall league performance
- 50:23Speaker 1: give you hope that Hassel could turn into something useful
- 50:28Speaker 1: for a fantasy baseball in twenty twenty five.
- 50:31Speaker 2: Yeah, this is probably one of the hardest players to
- 50:35Speaker 2: kind of make out here. As you look at the
- 50:36Speaker 2: Fall League here, because Hassel has pedigree, he was an
- 50:40Speaker 2: eighth overall pick. You know, he's already made his living
- 50:43Speaker 2: signs for four point three million, so he's doing just
- 50:47Speaker 2: fine from that perspective. But you're right, he really has
- 50:53Speaker 2: not lived up to that building. But yet they're still
- 50:56Speaker 2: kind of pushing him through the miners. They're not going
- 50:58Speaker 2: easy on him. They pushed him all the way to
- 51:01Speaker 2: Triple A this year, and you know, he kind of
- 51:03Speaker 2: struggled when he got there. But he also makes me
- 51:06Speaker 2: think of one of those players that might just like
- 51:09Speaker 2: be needs to be challenged over and over and over
- 51:11Speaker 2: again and will kind of grow into it at the
- 51:14Speaker 2: major league level. And so I've still got a little
- 51:17Speaker 2: outside hope for Hassle. Am I investing in him? No,
- 51:21Speaker 2: But do I think this gives the glimpse of like
- 51:23Speaker 2: there definitely is talent there. You know, as we talked
- 51:26Speaker 2: about a lot of these other players playing against greater talent,
- 51:30Speaker 2: Hassle is probably doing the opposite. So you have to
- 51:32Speaker 2: remember he's probably beating up on guys that are single
- 51:35Speaker 2: A and double A hit pitchers versus kind of the
- 51:38Speaker 2: the triple as that he should be facing or even
- 51:41Speaker 2: trying to get some major league at baths. So I got,
- 51:44Speaker 2: like I said, he's on my watch list. I think
- 51:46Speaker 2: there again, with the pedigree he has there, you can't
- 51:48Speaker 2: really write him off for any reason at this point.
- 51:52Speaker 2: But he's not the guind of, He's not the prospect
- 51:55Speaker 2: he once was. It's not like, you know, he's going
- 51:58Speaker 2: to be the guy that you're hold on dynastathes. Honestly,
- 52:01Speaker 2: if somebody sees this as a potential that they need
- 52:04Speaker 2: to grab him, I'm probably letting them at this point
- 52:08Speaker 2: in time. But it gives you some outside hope that
- 52:11Speaker 2: that talent does show through. I just don't think it's
- 52:14Speaker 2: gonna like he's gonna burst on the scenes when he
- 52:16Speaker 2: makes it up to Washington. He's one of those guys
- 52:18Speaker 2: that may take two three years before he really finds
- 52:21Speaker 2: his footing. And he's an interesting, you know, back of
- 52:25Speaker 2: the end of the lineup outfielder for you in fantasy
- 52:28Speaker 2: perspectives at the peak.
- 52:31Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I agree that, Like I think it depends
- 52:34Speaker 1: on like kind of what your priors were here. I'm
- 52:36Speaker 1: Robert Hassele too that, Like I was totally out on
- 52:39Speaker 1: Robert Hassele and maybe like this fall league is giving
- 52:42Speaker 1: me a little hope that he can actually be useful
- 52:44Speaker 1: that like, you know, I would be adding him to
- 52:46Speaker 1: the back of a dynasty roster or towards the end
- 52:49Speaker 1: of a drafting hold, where I wasn't counting on that
- 52:52Speaker 1: at all coming into this fall league performance. It's just
- 52:55Speaker 1: been real tough. And what kind of reminds me of
- 52:58Speaker 1: is almost like a like a left handed Lane Thomas,
- 53:01Speaker 1: where I do think that Hassel has lots of good
- 53:04Speaker 1: tools and the defense and speed that he flashes can
- 53:08Speaker 1: keep him around for a long time, and then he
- 53:10Speaker 1: can learn to develop to hit a little bit. But certainly,
- 53:14Speaker 1: like if you've also been holding him and been looking
- 53:16Speaker 1: for some point where that needle can kind of tick
- 53:19Speaker 1: back up to a little bit of value in a
- 53:21Speaker 1: dynasty league, this is now, and so certainly capitalize it
- 53:24Speaker 1: why you can. But I don't think he's going to
- 53:27Speaker 1: ever really be much more than kind of a fourth
- 53:30Speaker 1: fifth outfielder kind of player in pretty deep fantasy leagues.
- 53:34Speaker 1: So yeah, great to see that he's doing something, but
- 53:38Speaker 1: I'm not going to put too many eggs in that basket. Okay,
- 53:44Speaker 1: next player, we have actually funny that We mentioned Michael
- 53:48Speaker 1: Bush because this was one of the players that went
- 53:50Speaker 1: back from the Cubs to the Dodgers, and it looks
- 53:55Speaker 1: like the Dodgers fleas the Cubs here because I year
- 53:57Speaker 1: Hope has been If there's one player that I think
- 54:00Speaker 1: you need to start other than Biasteros, it's probably Zayer
- 54:03Speaker 1: Hope here, who is rounding out a great twenty twenty
- 54:07Speaker 1: four when he reached a ball as a nineteen year
- 54:10Speaker 1: old put up a one forty four WRC plus over
- 54:13Speaker 1: fifty four games there. This is kind of your traditional
- 54:17Speaker 1: really tools they player where the hit tool is going
- 54:22Speaker 1: to struggle. Like it's reminds me of a lot like
- 54:25Speaker 1: a Jose Siri or early Audolis Garcia, where like, I
- 54:29Speaker 1: don't know if he's gonna be able to make enough
- 54:32Speaker 1: contact to be like an upper end, upper echelon fantasy player,
- 54:36Speaker 1: but he could, like we've seen players like Elie de
- 54:39Speaker 1: la Cruz kind of be able to finish off their
- 54:41Speaker 1: game in the minors, and Hope is having a fantastic
- 54:44Speaker 1: fall league in which he's hitting two sixty four, three, ten, five,
- 54:48Speaker 1: twenty eight with three homers seventeen bombs. And this has
- 54:52Speaker 1: been the one guy that any scouting report that's been
- 54:55Speaker 1: coming back from the Fall League has been very glowing
- 54:58Speaker 1: about Zayer Hope. So I think you can tell that
- 55:01Speaker 1: I'm getting a little bit excited about him. Are you
- 55:03Speaker 1: here to temper that excitement or are you also putting
- 55:06Speaker 1: this guy on kind of like the in terms of
- 55:09Speaker 1: like upper end echelon outcomes. I think this has got
- 55:13Speaker 1: to be one of your prospects to put that kind
- 55:15Speaker 1: of star next to him on your on your watch list.
- 55:19Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a tough one for me, and it
- 55:22Speaker 2: has everything to do with the organization he's in and
- 55:25Speaker 2: not the player that he is. And you know, I've
- 55:28Speaker 2: started to really shy away from Dodgers prospects just because
- 55:33Speaker 2: of the team that they've developed in how much pressure
- 55:35Speaker 2: they put themselves to deliver that they is really made
- 55:39Speaker 2: it hard for their prospects to find their footing and
- 55:44Speaker 2: break in the door at the major league level. And so,
- 55:48Speaker 2: you know, the Dodgers, they're they're in it for the
- 55:50Speaker 2: next you know, five to seven years, Like they've got
- 55:54Speaker 2: all these guys signed for to like twenty thirty. There,
- 55:59Speaker 2: they're fully in. Doesn't mean there's not gonna be spots
- 56:02Speaker 2: and opportunities but for a guy to kind of cut
- 56:06Speaker 2: their teeth, especially a young guy coming through, that is
- 56:10Speaker 2: going to I just have to think, with his profile
- 56:13Speaker 2: be somewhat streaky, he's going to be absolutely unbelievable. And
- 56:17Speaker 2: I love your La Dela Cruz comple like, I think
- 56:18Speaker 2: he's gonna be absolutely unbelievable sometimes and absolutely dreadful other
- 56:21Speaker 2: times with that hit tool. So I'm I'm throwing a
- 56:24Speaker 2: little bit of cold water on it. And I think
- 56:27Speaker 2: it's mainly just because the organization that he's the opportunities
- 56:32Speaker 2: are not going to come as easy and when things
- 56:35Speaker 2: aren't going as well, they're gonna they're gonna move on quickly. Uh,
- 56:38Speaker 2: They're gonna send them back to the minors because they
- 56:40Speaker 2: they have things that they need to do, they need
- 56:41Speaker 2: to win ball games. They don't have time to develop somebody.
- 56:44Speaker 2: So there's my cold water. And it doesn't mean that
- 56:46Speaker 2: I don't like him as a prospect, doesn't mean he
- 56:48Speaker 2: doesn't have all the potential in the world. I just
- 56:50Speaker 2: don't really love the situation. But you know, there's one
- 56:54Speaker 2: thing that can change that, and that's performance. So if
- 56:57Speaker 2: he can keep doing what he can do, and if
- 56:59Speaker 2: it really for me is like, if he can really
- 57:02Speaker 2: improve that hit tool, then that then he gets really
- 57:07Speaker 2: really interesting.
- 57:09Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean I think you could tell from
- 57:12Speaker 1: my background there I am, I think a little more excited,
- 57:15Speaker 1: more hopeful on hope than you are. But part of
- 57:20Speaker 1: it is like, yeah, he is nineteen. He doesn't need
- 57:22Speaker 1: a Rule five kind of designation until twenty twenty seven,
- 57:27Speaker 1: so he's got a couple more years here to cook
- 57:29Speaker 1: for the Dodgers as well as Like, I think the
- 57:32Speaker 1: Dodgers are good talent evaluators as an organization, and I
- 57:36Speaker 1: think it's pretty telling that they plucked him away from
- 57:39Speaker 1: the Cubs and that Michael Bush deal and just kind
- 57:42Speaker 1: of let him fly down in Double A in a
- 57:45Speaker 1: nineteen year old that Yeah, it's certainly somebody where I
- 57:50Speaker 1: think if you're looking for somebody with lots of helium,
- 57:52Speaker 1: this is your guy. I think he's going to be
- 57:54Speaker 1: kind of entering into the prospect conversations a lot over
- 57:58Speaker 1: the offseason because of this per formance and getting on
- 58:01Speaker 1: people's radars for the first time. And so if you
- 58:03Speaker 1: can jump and you know that you're in a league
- 58:06Speaker 1: where hype really helps you bring back good trades, this
- 58:11Speaker 1: is a great guy. To add, I think, and then
- 58:13Speaker 1: kind of watch going into next year. I'm not going
- 58:16Speaker 1: to be pegging him for like a key Dynasty piece
- 58:19Speaker 1: until I see a little more performance as he moves
- 58:22Speaker 1: into like double A. Okay, well let's go on to
- 58:28Speaker 1: We've got three more hitters left, and the next one
- 58:32Speaker 1: we've got is Trey Morgan, first baseman from the Tampa
- 58:36Speaker 1: Bay Rays, who has hit three seventy eight, four thirty four,
- 58:40Speaker 1: six twenty two over fifty three at bats, which just
- 58:43Speaker 1: one homer thirteen RBIs but kind of like a James
- 58:47Speaker 1: Loney mold, very great plate discipline, six strikeouts to just
- 58:51Speaker 1: five walks, and I wanted to bring them up because
- 58:55Speaker 1: this hasn't been necessarily like too hot of a prospect
- 58:58Speaker 1: as he's been coming through through the Ray system. He
- 59:01Speaker 1: was a fantastic corner outfielder and first baseman for the
- 59:07Speaker 1: LSU Tigers that you might remember during the Dylan Cruz
- 59:11Speaker 1: Paul Skeen's team, like he made an insane catch out
- 59:14Speaker 1: in left field during that College World Series. That Trey
- 59:17Speaker 1: Morgan has been just like always destined. I think to
- 59:22Speaker 1: make a roster, it's just kind of like high floor.
- 59:26Speaker 1: But we didn't think he really had much of a
- 59:29Speaker 1: ceiling as he's been coming through the system, also been
- 59:32Speaker 1: battling with Xavier Isaac. But this is a guy where
- 59:35Speaker 1: some of the reports coming back from the AFL have
- 59:38Speaker 1: been really glowing about his approach and people from a
- 59:42Speaker 1: talent evaluation perspective have been impressed by what they've seen
- 59:45Speaker 1: from Trey Morgan. So is this performance putting him kind
- 59:49Speaker 1: of on your radar going into twenty twenty five when
- 59:52Speaker 1: you should be starting at double A and sniffing triple
- 59:56Speaker 1: A in the majors by the end of the year.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I think it definitely put him on the radar.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: I think your you're comp to James Loney's. I think
- 1:00:04Speaker 2: the concern UH for for his profile is that, you know,
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: it does to have enough to be a first baseman
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: that does more than steal a few bags and poke
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: a few homers. I I do wonder if the ceiling
- 1:00:18Speaker 2: is that high, But he seems to keep exceeding expectations,
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: and I think that's that's what is intriguing about him
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: and being in probably one of the best systems for
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: player development UH and they've they've pushed him pretty quick
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: through that system. They're basically said, show it to me,
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: Let's try it again. Show it to me, Let's try
- 1:00:37Speaker 2: it again, and they he's He's made.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: I can't remember how.
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: Many stops it was, with something like five, five stops
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: or four stops already between the complex uh, single A,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: high A and double A as he's been going through
- 1:00:52Speaker 2: in just the last year and a half. So I
- 1:00:55Speaker 2: think he's really interesting. I do think, you know, he's
- 1:00:59Speaker 2: probably a better real world ballplayer than a fantasy player,
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: and so I'm probably not gonna be buying a whole
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: lot of shares, but it's there's something to be said
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: for a guy that always exceeds expectations. Just keep in
- 1:01:13Speaker 2: mind he does tend to put the ball on the
- 1:01:15Speaker 2: on the ground half the time, and that will absolutely
- 1:01:19Speaker 2: cap what his production ends up being, regardless of how
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: good of a hitter he truly is.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: Yeah, pretty I think it is James on a two
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: point zero, So there is that factor. But I do
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: think that like this performance has moved Morgan like to
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: an afterthought to somebody who Yeah, I am like, if
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: I'm looking for some glimmer of upside for a first
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: baseman going forward, I think he's a decent shot because
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: he is also going to steal basis. He's got speed.
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: He's also just like a defensive stalwart. So he's gonna
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: make the majors in some capacity for the Rays over
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: the next couple of years. And if he can get
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: on the field with the defense, stick on the field
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: with the defense. It's one of those players where it
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: becomes intriguing because maybe the bat can come around. But
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you you did kind of call it out there too,
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: like if he if he's got the ground ball heavy approach,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: I don't think you're gonna get too much of him
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: from him fantasy wise, but maybe that this approach that
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: he's kind of tweaked in the Fall League, he can
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: carry into twenty twenty five and might be talking about
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: Trey Morgan as you know, somebody we might be looking
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: at four corners and maybe even twelve teamers, but like
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: certainly somebody to keep an eye on. Okay, Well, next
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: player we have is somebody we covered over the fall
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: when he got called up and is near and dear
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: to us as a Cardinals prospect. And this is Thomas
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: the Gacy, who has really looks fantastic here in the
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: AFL after making it to the majors here in twenty
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: twenty four, he has slashed four nineteen five sixty one
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: six point twenty eight over fifty seven played appearances, with
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: two homer's nine RBIs, stolen a couple of bases too,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: and walked more than he struck out so far. So
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: Sagace looks like he could be just taking hold of
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: that first base job in Saint Louis maybe next year
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: going into the season, maybe even third base, because it
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: does sound like Nolan Arnano's his way out of town.
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: But what is really kind of like intrigued you the
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: most from Sagasi's performance here in the AFL and what
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: he can carry into twenty twenty five.
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think the perfect cop for JC
- 1:03:34Speaker 2: here is Brendan Donovan, who's also on the Cardinals. Like
- 1:03:38Speaker 2: there is multipositional eligibility abound here. He's played pretty much
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: every position in the infield.
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: He's not really.
- 1:03:45Speaker 2: Short stop, but he's played first, he's played second, he's
- 1:03:48Speaker 2: played third, and he is one of those guys that's
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: gonna have a I say, league average average if you
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: can say that he's going to have just above average power.
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: He's gonna steal a few bases, he's going to hit
- 1:04:03Speaker 2: the top of the lineup. He's going to be just
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: above average valuable. And then with that positional flexibility, I
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: think it's interesting, and your point being the good one,
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: is that he's got one of the clearest paths to
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: playing time of probably anybody that we're talking about here,
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: because the Cardinals have done everything to signal that they
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: are rebuilding, they are, you know, kicking it in for
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: twenty twenty five. And this is the kind of guy
- 1:04:27Speaker 2: And that's why you know he got called up and
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: that's why he's in the Fall League, is that they
- 1:04:30Speaker 2: are rooming him to be ready to take a full
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: time role in twenty five. And I think that he
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: will have a long leash to make it happen. And
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: you know, he's had a few bumps along the way
- 1:04:41Speaker 2: in the miners, but he's figured things out pretty quickly
- 1:04:44Speaker 2: everywhere he's been and been a pretty valuable player. So
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: I think there's a shot in the dark for a
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: guy like so Jase here towards end of drafts next
- 1:04:52Speaker 2: year that you could be kind of happy with as
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: a bench player that might be able to produce a
- 1:04:57Speaker 2: little bit more. Again, like a Brendan Donovan. So how
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: am I Compson using Cardinals to comp Cardinals there, Yes,
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: that's always a fun way to do it.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I think you're in the right realm.
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: I think maybe the tweak from from Donovan to Segacy
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: is that Segasey's a little more power and a less contact.
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: So that's kind of if you're thinking of somebody to
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: comp him to. I think it's a little tough because
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: he's also right handed. Usually this profile comes as a
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: left handed player. But I'm penciling in like a player
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: who he's going to qualify a second and third second
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: and shortstop going to next year in all leagues. I
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: think should have third base eligibility in a lot of leagues.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Two should pick up first base during twenty twenty five.
- 1:05:47Speaker 1: But you're looking at somebody who can be that infield
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: utility man for your fantasy roster and put up something
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: like eighteen to twenty homers and hit somewhere around like
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: two fifty and you know, while hitting in the middle
- 1:06:02Speaker 1: of the order for the Saint Louis Cardinals, so you know,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: seventy five ish runs an RBI a piece somewhere in
- 1:06:08Speaker 1: that range. That like, yeah, I think because of that eligibility,
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: when you can use him to paper over roster ills
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: that you might have, or if you again, if you're
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: looking for somebody for a draft and hold situation that
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: has those eligibilities. So Gacy, he's shown me a lot
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: of things here in the AFL that I think just
- 1:06:28Speaker 1: kind of rounds out what was a pretty solid twenty
- 1:06:31Speaker 1: twenty four for him, Like the WRC pluses weren't great,
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: but he put up twenty homers and nine so on
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: bases down at Triple A while biding his time, and
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: it does look like it's all systems go into twenty
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: twenty five for Segacy.
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: Yeah, so we will buckle up and see what happens.
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, well we've got one more guy here who
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: is another first basement corner. We've found a lot of these.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: I guess that also kind of makes sense that they
- 1:06:58Speaker 1: get sent to the Arizona Fall League to work on
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: just kind of stay in fresh and stay in in shape,
- 1:07:05Speaker 1: especially for somebody like Nico Cavadas, first base DH for
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: the Los Angeles Angels, who got playing time this year,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: and I advocated a lot for his playing time even
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: when he was in the Boston system. So he got
- 1:07:19Speaker 1: traded over when the Angels traded Luis Garcia, not Thatli
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Garcia and not that Louis Garcia over to the Red
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: Sox at the deadline, and he played down the stretch
- 1:07:32Speaker 1: for LA looks kind of lost though, with a thirty
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: eight point seven percent strikeout rate. It was a seventy
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: seven WRC plus, but the power is legit. Cavadas is
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: twenty six, very Greek, and he should have a very
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: great playing time situation with the Angels just because they
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: are the Angels. I mean, they've said they're gonna try
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: to like bring players in, but somehow players like always
- 1:08:00Speaker 1: seemed to rise to the top of that lineup when
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: it's all said and done, should have plenty of chances
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: at first base in DH. I guess I should also
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: say what he's actually done in the Fall League to
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: make him stand out compared to that rough strikeout rate
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: that we're talking about. So he's put up a three
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: twenty four four ninety seven thirty five slug with four
- 1:08:22Speaker 1: homers and ten RBIs over forty nine plenty appearances, seventeen
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: k's to twelve walks, So that's good for I mean, honestly,
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: he hasn't cut that strikeout rate much from his major
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: league example. So what stands out for you here in
- 1:08:38Speaker 1: Cavatis's profile, Yeah.
- 1:08:40Speaker 2: I think it's a This is one of those interesting
- 1:08:42Speaker 2: players that depends the league you're in, is how once
- 1:08:45Speaker 2: you should be interested in in ECO here, And it
- 1:08:49Speaker 2: really comes down to he he is a walk machine.
- 1:08:53Speaker 2: He is Kevin Euclus reincarnated. He walks a heck of
- 1:08:57Speaker 2: a lot of times. You can also say cav On
- 1:09:00Speaker 2: Bigio reincarnated. I'm not sure that either of those is
- 1:09:03Speaker 2: a really fair comp here. But he does strike out
- 1:09:07Speaker 2: way too much, but he does walk a heck of
- 1:09:09Speaker 2: a lot. Even in his kind of short stint in
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: the majors this year, where he's only gotten thirty games
- 1:09:15Speaker 2: where he struck out thirty nine percent of the time,
- 1:09:17Speaker 2: he still has an OBP of two eighty three, which
- 1:09:21Speaker 2: was one hundred points better than his average, And so
- 1:09:24Speaker 2: you know, he he's a guy that historically has been
- 1:09:26Speaker 2: in on base at a three eighty to four hundred
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: clip and that's valuable in OBP league. And uh, there
- 1:09:35Speaker 2: is definitely some good power to boot. So the question
- 1:09:38Speaker 2: for him is can he control those strikeouts and will
- 1:09:43Speaker 2: he be in a platoon. I think those are the questions.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: But he has a lot of value in a certain
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: league setup if you're playing at OBP. That's that's why
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: I find him really interested in the Fall League. And
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: I'm not terribly excited with him in a you know,
- 1:09:58Speaker 2: a five by five without but maybe maybe he can
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: he can start to scratch the service if he gets
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: full playing time next year and somehow finds out how
- 1:10:09Speaker 2: to hit lefties.
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: Yeah, And I mean I think what Cavatis is also
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: kind of in is I know we covered this a
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: little bit at the end of the season with the
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: crazy year that Brent Rooker had, but like looking for
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: some of those those skills that Rooker showed throughout his
- 1:10:26Speaker 1: time in the miners, which was huge power, but also
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: struggled with strikeouts and especially like laying off off speed
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: and just kind of like controlling the zone and being
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: able to get the pitch that they wanted. That if
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: you're looking for somebody to I think throw into that
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: bucket of like here's some of the skill like hallmarks
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: and profiles that we're looking at that Brent Rooker was
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: able to capitalize and take to fruition and put up
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: his crazy season. I think Cavadis is kind of in
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: that type of bucket where you're looking at somebody who
- 1:10:58Speaker 1: has been bouncing around like Triple A and the Majors
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: and strikes out too much, has unreal power and just
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: decent playing time situation. Because, yeah, Rooker, when he was
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: twenty six, same age as Cavadas was this year, put
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: up a thirty two point nine percent strikeout rate, only
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: hit two a one in his stent there over fifty
- 1:11:19Speaker 1: eight games. So there is still a development path for
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Cavadis going forward here. Yeah, you're absolutely right.
- 1:11:27Speaker 2: It's like if he figures out the strikeouts here, things
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: get really interesting on this And I think that's that's
- 1:11:34Speaker 2: what you're watching for. Seems that the Fall League that
- 1:11:36Speaker 2: he's he's kind of, you know, holding his own there.
- 1:11:38Speaker 2: He's still striking out like a decent, decent clip, but
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: it's not in the nearly forty percent that it was
- 1:11:43Speaker 2: in the majors. So at the same time, you have
- 1:11:47Speaker 2: remember he's twenty six in the Fall League and so
- 1:11:49Speaker 2: he is going to be beating up on some of
- 1:11:51Speaker 2: that younger competition.
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely, Okay, Well that gives us a pretty good
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: summary of you know, some of the standouts here for
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: the aff. Well, I'm looking forward to flying out to
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: Phoenix tomorrow. It's going to be a blast of a
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: weekend nerding out over Fantasy baseball and all these prospects
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: and so yeah, I think we've given you some good
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: names to dig into. And as we've been speaking, we
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: cursed the heck out of the Yankees. It's a tie
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: ball game now, so I'm pumped to go watch the
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: rest of this game. It looks like it's going to
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: be another classic and see how this one sorts out
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: between LA and New York in Game five. But brew
