2:57
Speaker 5: how you doing I do? I get props and I'll
3:01
Speaker 5: take a picture of you and post it on my
3:02
Speaker 5: social media a little bit later, because you came in
3:04
Speaker 5: here wearing this T shirt and you said, do you
3:07
Speaker 5: know who this is? Because the face is missing and
3:10
Speaker 5: it's just the top part in the bottom part, but
3:11
Speaker 5: the face is missing. You said, do you know who
3:14
Speaker 5: this is?
3:15
Speaker 3: And I named it just like that because you are
3:17
Speaker 3: the smartest, unbelievable person on the planet and we all
3:23
Speaker 3: know that.
3:24
Speaker 6: Well, well maybe, yeah, maybe you're right, you're right, but
3:28
Speaker 6: it's again, I'll take a picture and see if you asking,
3:32
Speaker 6: I'll go and tell you and no af you're listening,
3:33
Speaker 6: and we'll let people on social media gets it.
3:36
Speaker 5: You're rocking the Gilligan look today. But Gilligan doesn't have
3:39
Speaker 5: a face. It's just the hat and the wide collars
3:42
Speaker 5: from Gilligan's Island, but no face. Is that like an
3:44
Speaker 5: editorial comment or something. Gilligan have face.
3:47
Speaker 3: I bought the T shirt from his wife, who wrote
3:49
Speaker 3: his life story right, and she and I were connected
3:54
Speaker 3: through Kathy Teeth's from Headline Books. I did my Lean
3:57
Speaker 3: and Luscious cookbooks and somehow her I think her name
4:03
Speaker 3: is Drema Denver got involved with Kathy and we were
4:07
Speaker 3: all at a bookseller's event and lo and behold, she
4:10
Speaker 3: had a T shirt and I had to have it.
4:13
Speaker 3: So this is that shirt.
4:15
Speaker 5: It is a lovely, lovely shirt. And I guessed it
4:17
Speaker 5: because you said that nobody else was able to guess who.
4:22
Speaker 2: I mean.
4:22
Speaker 3: I get people guessing everything under the sun, but not
4:26
Speaker 3: Gilligan's Island.
4:27
Speaker 5: That's because I got a head full of nothing.
4:29
Speaker 3: That's what you said. You have a head full of useless.
4:31
Speaker 5: And glorious results of a misspent youth. That's's and dream
4:36
Speaker 5: Of Denver's been pretty funny. Dream Of Denver has been
4:38
Speaker 5: on the show in the past. And then she's a
4:42
Speaker 5: very very lovely person, one of my favorite people in
4:44
Speaker 5: the world. And a great story with her in Bob Denver.
4:48
Speaker 5: You know, they met on the set of The love
4:51
Speaker 5: Boat because Dreama was an actress, and that's actually where
4:56
Speaker 5: they met. They did an episode of the late seventies
4:58
Speaker 5: of the love Boat TV show. If you or that
5:00
Speaker 5: show from ABC.
5:01
Speaker 3: Oh my god, my kids used to watch it Saturday night,
5:05
Speaker 3: no matter what happened Saturday, that was their TV time.
5:09
Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's where they met. They the Dreamer and
5:12
Speaker 5: Bob met because they were both guests on The Loved
5:15
Speaker 5: See more useless information fantastic.
5:19
Speaker 3: I am I am so impressed. I can't sit here comfortably.
5:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, don't ask me anything important. So well, what's on
5:26
Speaker 5: your mind? What are you up to? What do you
5:27
Speaker 5: want to talk about?
5:28
Speaker 3: I want people to understand but I do and what
5:32
Speaker 3: I It's not what I do. It's more the way
5:35
Speaker 3: I eat, the way I live, the way I think.
5:39
Speaker 3: And I want more people. There's room in my head
5:42
Speaker 3: for more people to come on board and discover the
5:45
Speaker 3: fact that they can not just lose weight. God knows
5:49
Speaker 3: how many times people who are listening to this broadcast
5:53
Speaker 3: have lost weight. They've lost it, but see they run
5:56
Speaker 3: their own personal lost and Found department. They lose it,
5:59
Speaker 3: they get they lose it, they gain it. It gets old.
6:02
Speaker 3: Not only does it get old, but it gets depressing
6:05
Speaker 3: when you stop dieting.
6:07
Speaker 5: And it's also if I can jump in here, it's
6:08
Speaker 5: also not healthy free because you're putting a lot of
6:12
Speaker 5: strain on your heart when you're I mean, I got
6:15
Speaker 5: a good friend of mine. I won't mention his name,
6:17
Speaker 5: but he's a good friend of mine and takes it
6:19
Speaker 5: upon himself. Every now and then he's going to go
6:21
Speaker 5: on whatever diet it is. At the time, he'll gain
6:25
Speaker 5: I mean he's ballooned up. He'll gain thirty pounds, and
6:27
Speaker 5: then he'll lose forty, and then he goes off of
6:30
Speaker 5: and he gains fifty, and then he loses sixty. And
6:33
Speaker 5: it just goes back and forth. And his physician told him,
6:37
Speaker 5: this is not healthy what you're doing to your body, and.
6:40
Speaker 3: It's not healthy. And over the years of my life,
6:43
Speaker 3: you know, it's been coined a lot with a lot
6:45
Speaker 3: of names, but that's yo yo dieting, and it's dangerous now.
6:50
Speaker 3: Right now, there are still lots and lots I don't
6:53
Speaker 3: know the number people who are being romanticized with the
6:58
Speaker 3: weight loss injections and they're not learning how to eat.
7:03
Speaker 3: Although I wish everyone good health, but I'm kind of worried,
7:07
Speaker 3: and a little bit more than worried, because there are
7:12
Speaker 3: some unpleasant side effects that are beginning to be talked about.
7:16
Speaker 7: And in the.
7:16
Speaker 3: Process of however, you lose weight. At the end of
7:20
Speaker 3: the day, we need to know how to eat. And
7:24
Speaker 3: a lot of people have said to me in an
7:27
Speaker 3: argumentative way.
7:28
Speaker 8: I know how to eat.
7:29
Speaker 3: I knew how to eat the minute I was born, well,
7:31
Speaker 3: so did we all, but how to eat correctly? And
7:36
Speaker 3: if you like, so many of us are under the
7:39
Speaker 3: influence of not just your mother, but your grandmother, and
7:43
Speaker 3: down the street it's your great grandmother, and we're eating
7:47
Speaker 3: their way, and it's so easy to fall into a
7:50
Speaker 3: weight problem. All my purpose is, and I want to
7:54
Speaker 3: try to simplify it, is make the Mediterranean lifestyle the
8:00
Speaker 3: way you eat, because it's healthy and it's clean, and
8:03
Speaker 3: most doctors are recommending for us to check out Mediterranean.
8:08
Speaker 3: We meet at the Goodwill Prosperity Center on the West Side.
8:12
Speaker 3: We only at this present time have a Thursday morning meeting,
8:15
Speaker 3: and I urge people if they are tired of dieting,
8:18
Speaker 3: if they're tired of yo yoing up and down the
8:21
Speaker 3: scale and also not feeling comfortable in their body, come
8:24
Speaker 3: on board. Let's learn together. And we have lots of
8:28
Speaker 3: success stories in our group, and I have the joy
8:32
Speaker 3: of also showing various members how they can now maintain
8:39
Speaker 3: their weight loss and keep it off. And there's nothing
8:43
Speaker 3: sweeter than that, without any gimmicks, no tricks, just doing it.
8:47
Speaker 3: With a new mindset and plenty of food to eat.
8:51
Speaker 3: It doesn't get better than that.
8:52
Speaker 5: It doesn't, indeed. Nine to sixteen Dave Allen showing five
8:55
Speaker 5: A dy life brought to you part by Pinnacle Consultants
8:57
Speaker 5: Services involved developing comprehensive management plans to outline strategies for
9:01
Speaker 5: controlling and minimizing as best it's exposure. Perfect for commercial
9:04
Speaker 5: property owners and managers. Visit Pinnacle Corp. Dot net. Because
9:08
Speaker 5: what you don't know can't hurt you. One of the
9:10
Speaker 5: things that I have Sometimes people will hear you on
9:12
Speaker 5: the air with me and I'll run into them somewhere
9:14
Speaker 5: and they'll say, well, when she says Mediterranean, what what
9:17
Speaker 5: exactly are the Mediterranean foods? And there are several. It's
9:21
Speaker 5: just it's not one of these things where you're only eating.
9:23
Speaker 5: You can have these three things, you know, but what
9:26
Speaker 5: give us an example?
9:27
Speaker 3: Nothing we can't eat. But the reason for the Mediterranean
9:31
Speaker 3: is that's the way people who live in that part
9:33
Speaker 3: of the world, by it's t one hundred and eleven
9:35
Speaker 3: million people, I think at the latest population count, they
9:38
Speaker 3: eat clean, unadulterated food. When food comes out of our
9:44
Speaker 3: side of the pond, there's chemicals, there's additives, there's stuff
9:48
Speaker 3: in it that our body doesn't know what to do
9:51
Speaker 3: with it, and it creates problems. Mediterranean eating is clean, fresh,
9:57
Speaker 3: healthy food, and it's not a diet. It's a lifestyle.
10:01
Speaker 3: And I want to be able to teach more and
10:04
Speaker 3: more people the benefits of this so that they can
10:08
Speaker 3: honor themselves. By the way, the company that supports Mediterranean
10:12
Speaker 3: is called Old Ways out of Boston, and yes, Mediterranean
10:16
Speaker 3: is pretty old because it's been around for centuries. I
10:20
Speaker 3: jokingly say, I think this is the way Jesus say it,
10:23
Speaker 3: unless you know the name of the supermarket he went to.
10:27
Speaker 5: I just saw in the news that there was a
10:29
Speaker 5: story that came out yesterday and it was one of
10:31
Speaker 5: the major cereal manufacturers that are stopping with the dies
10:36
Speaker 5: and things like that.
10:37
Speaker 7: Now.
10:37
Speaker 5: They probably really need to start with the sugar. That
10:39
Speaker 5: would be the first place to get sugar. But the
10:42
Speaker 5: dies are also an issue as well, and I think
10:45
Speaker 5: several I think Cinemon Toast Crunch I think was one
10:48
Speaker 5: of them, and there were several others that they've said
10:50
Speaker 5: that effective in a couple of years are going to
10:52
Speaker 5: stop using all the dyes and food because really, you know,
10:55
Speaker 5: that's a problem as well.
10:56
Speaker 3: Absolutely, and we put those dies in drinks so that
10:59
Speaker 3: the children will be, oh, my goodness, this is an drink.
11:02
Speaker 5: It's blue, and my.
11:03
Speaker 3: Cereal is green and blue and orange, and we don't
11:07
Speaker 3: realize what we're doing. Plus the plethora of candies and
11:12
Speaker 3: snacks that are out there, come on. It's long term
11:18
Speaker 3: bad eating and it takes a toll. And we don't
11:21
Speaker 3: need to do that, but we don't know what else
11:23
Speaker 3: to do. And I want to teach the other side.
11:26
Speaker 5: Of what else.
11:28
Speaker 3: And your classes are when Thursday morning ten o'clock. Their
11:32
Speaker 3: modest fees apply. But the information we give not but
11:36
Speaker 3: the information we give, and the information we give is stellar.
11:40
Speaker 3: And the people that are on board with me are
11:43
Speaker 3: doing well, getting good reports from their physicians and also
11:49
Speaker 3: accomplishing weight loss.

Speaker 5: you this afternoon? Or logan this afternoon? And Lauren Hatcher's
16:11
Speaker 5: here as well there, nice to meet you. Welcome, meet you,
16:13
Speaker 5: Welcome to the show. Now what are you doing all this?
16:15
Speaker 12: I am our volunteer coordinator, So I volunteer to volunteeer.
16:22
Speaker 12: I volunteer to coordinate all the volunteers.
16:23
Speaker 5: And Chris, we're talking about phone with the dough, which
16:25
Speaker 5: is happening Saturday. How many volunteers do you need for
16:29
Speaker 5: this thing?
16:29
Speaker 12: Well, we have about one hundred and fifty right now,
16:32
Speaker 12: and we still have some open spaces for our second
16:35
Speaker 12: shift beer poors. So if anybody is feeling like pouring
16:39
Speaker 12: some beer and chatting with some friends in the shade,
16:42
Speaker 12: which is great. That's a huge perk when you get
16:45
Speaker 12: to poor as you get to be under a tense.
16:47
Speaker 5: It's going to be about ninety five with the heat
16:49
Speaker 5: index over one hundred on Saturday, no rain in the forecast.
16:53
Speaker 5: That's the way it's looking out. That's right.
16:54
Speaker 11: Yeah, I was hoping you would say ninety which is
16:56
Speaker 11: the official temperature day.
16:58
Speaker 5: We'll go with ninety five. Well, you know, drink more
17:01
Speaker 5: beer and drinks more water about it?
17:04
Speaker 14: Yeah?
17:04
Speaker 5: Yeah, So I will say this, This is fun. That's done.
17:07
Speaker 5: We're talking about annual event that the folks at Charleston
17:09
Speaker 5: Urban Works. Do it starts at three o'clock. There's an
17:11
Speaker 5: added thing this year where they're doing like a VIP thing.
17:13
Speaker 5: We'll get to that momentarily, but i'll tell you what
17:16
Speaker 5: I'm going to do right now. I just happen to
17:18
Speaker 5: have a couple of free passes for you to get
17:20
Speaker 5: in to phone with the dome. And these tickets are normally.
17:24
Speaker 11: These are VIP tickets, so they're normally fifty five dollars.
17:26
Speaker 5: All right. I actually have two that I will give
17:29
Speaker 5: away right now if your caller five and you can
17:32
Speaker 5: call me up right now. Three zero four three four
17:34
Speaker 5: five fifty eight fifty eight. Three zero four three four
17:37
Speaker 5: five fifty eight fifty eight. Ryan Nicholson, Senior Producer, standing
17:39
Speaker 5: by caller five. Right now, I will hook you up
17:42
Speaker 5: with a couple of the VIP tickets we're looking for.
17:44
Speaker 5: Caller five three zero four three four five fifty eight
17:47
Speaker 5: fifty eight and call down and we'll get you in there.
17:51
Speaker 5: So what's new this year? How many beers we got
17:52
Speaker 5: this year?
17:53
Speaker 11: We have over one hundred and sixty total beers this
17:55
Speaker 11: year and over sixty brands of beer. So all Apple,
17:59
Speaker 11: not all Apple, but certainly a ton of beers from
18:02
Speaker 11: around the state of West Virginia and Appalachia, but all
18:04
Speaker 11: also from around the country, so a little bit more
18:07
Speaker 11: than we had last year.
18:09
Speaker 9: We have.
18:10
Speaker 11: As far as the VIP ticket that's concerned, you get
18:12
Speaker 11: an extra hour of the event from three to four
18:14
Speaker 11: and also access to our new VIP beer table. This
18:17
Speaker 11: is something new we're doing this year, so exclusive beers
18:20
Speaker 11: only available to our VIP wristband holders from three to
18:25
Speaker 11: four and all throughout the entire event at the beer table.
18:28
Speaker 5: Now you're also doing some stuff afterwards this year.
18:31
Speaker 11: This is something they that's the other VIP perk is
18:33
Speaker 11: called Foam after the Dome. This is brand new we're
18:36
Speaker 11: doing this year. We've gotten fifteen different breweries, bars, restaurants
18:41
Speaker 11: in the capital city to sign up to be official
18:43
Speaker 11: venues for Foam after the Dome. Really, what they did
18:46
Speaker 11: to sign up is they agreed to offer some food
18:49
Speaker 11: and drink specials at their at their establishment from seven
18:52
Speaker 11: pm that evening this Saturday to the close of their
18:55
Speaker 11: of their business that night.
18:57
Speaker 5: So who are some of those people? So good examples.
18:59
Speaker 11: As far as DOWNWN is concerned, we have Groove, We
19:01
Speaker 11: have Sam's Uptown Cafe, we have Five Street, we have
19:05
Speaker 11: Black Sheep, we have Short Story Brewing. That's some of
19:10
Speaker 11: the examples. Downtown on the west side we have the
19:13
Speaker 11: Meetory wandering When's Meetory. We have the Wine Down, the
19:16
Speaker 11: New Wine Place on the west side. On the east end,
19:19
Speaker 11: we have the Red Carpet. We have Lee Street Lounge.
19:22
Speaker 11: So yeah, that's a good example. A few more if
19:24
Speaker 11: you go to our website or go to the social
19:26
Speaker 11: media page, we have the full listing of all of
19:28
Speaker 11: the Foam After the Dome participants this year fifteen different businesses.
19:32
Speaker 11: So that's a really great perk as you get access
19:34
Speaker 11: to these specials just by having your VP wristband on.
19:37
Speaker 11: And we also want to encourage people to stay in Charleston.
19:39
Speaker 11: You know, the phone mends pretty early at seven o'clock,
19:41
Speaker 11: so we want people to stay in Charleston. We have
19:43
Speaker 11: a lot of people that come in from out of
19:45
Speaker 11: town and stay in hotels, but we also have a
19:46
Speaker 11: lot of local folks. We want them to stay here
19:48
Speaker 11: and we want them to go get dinner, want them
19:50
Speaker 11: to have a few more drinks and enjoy the evening
19:52
Speaker 11: and invest locally. Right, continue to invest back into your
19:55
Speaker 11: local economy. So this is a really great way to
19:57
Speaker 11: do that.
19:57
Speaker 5: But Dave Alan Show on five eighty Live is brought
19:59
Speaker 5: to you part by Bridge Valley offering custom Taylor Training
20:02
Speaker 5: syst some black skilled graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
20:04
Speaker 5: Visit Bridge Valley dot edu. And of course this is
20:06
Speaker 5: a big fundraiser for Charleston Urban Works. Tell me about
20:10
Speaker 5: Charleston Urban Works, which you guys do.
20:11
Speaker 11: Yeah, So we formerly known as Charleston Main Streets as
20:14
Speaker 11: you know, Dave, we were first formed in two thousand
20:17
Speaker 11: and two as East End Main Street. West Side Main
20:20
Speaker 11: Street was formed in two thousand and five. We merged
20:22
Speaker 11: in twenty fifteen to create Charleston Main Streets and now
20:24
Speaker 11: we've rebranded at Charleston Urban Works. Really our mission is
20:28
Speaker 11: fully focused on the urban and economic revitalization of the
20:33
Speaker 11: urban districts of Charleston, West Virginia. So that's the East End,
20:36
Speaker 11: the West Side, and now we've just included we've just
20:38
Speaker 11: added Canall City to our repertoire, if you will, You
20:41
Speaker 11: and I we've talked about that a couple of weeks ago.
20:44
Speaker 11: And so we really focus in public space enhancement projects,
20:49
Speaker 11: that's you know, enhancing the public realm. We focus in
20:53
Speaker 11: business development and advancement, initiative, shop local programs, that kind
20:56
Speaker 11: of thing, events and marketing like we're seeing this Saturday
21:00
Speaker 11: that bring open new eyes to our district and bring
21:02
Speaker 11: people to the Capital city, and then increasing the engagement
21:06
Speaker 11: across our volunteer base, across our business community with our
21:09
Speaker 11: local officials, making sure that everyone understands the importance of
21:13
Speaker 11: investing in your urban neighborhood business districts, because if you
21:16
Speaker 11: don't have an strong urban core, you don't have a
21:18
Speaker 11: strong capital city. So we're really proud of the work
21:21
Speaker 11: we've done over the past now twenty three years in
21:24
Speaker 11: our different iterations, and we're even more excited about the
21:27
Speaker 11: future with this new restructuring and rebranding. With keeping our
21:31
Speaker 11: events like Phone with the Dome and then in September
21:33
Speaker 11: October West they're perfect ways to raise funds that are
21:38
Speaker 11: directed right back into the community through frankly a really
21:43
Speaker 11: fun time, right, So we're excited.
21:45
Speaker 5: I want to say congratulations to Robert Ittings. He was
21:48
Speaker 5: our winner and wanted a couple of those VIP passes. Robert, congratulations,
21:53
Speaker 5: I know you will definitely have yourself a good time.
21:56
Speaker 5: Talk about the number of people on average that come
21:58
Speaker 5: out to this thing every year. Rick, Well, year we
22:00
Speaker 5: sold out.
22:00
Speaker 11: And I've been saying every time we come on air
22:03
Speaker 11: during these interviews that we attribute some of that success
22:06
Speaker 11: to our partnership with the WVRC and all the great
22:09
Speaker 11: stations here here at WVRC.
22:11
Speaker 5: But last year we did sell out. We want to
22:14
Speaker 5: sell like, give me in.
22:14
Speaker 11: Last year was almost fifteen hundred people. So we're hoping
22:17
Speaker 11: for the same this year. I think we can probably
22:19
Speaker 11: get there. I have no doubt we can. Ticket sales
22:22
Speaker 11: look are looking pretty strong. You know, it's always interesting
22:24
Speaker 11: in Charleston. Everybody kind of wasted the last minute, so
22:26
Speaker 11: of course it makes folks like.
22:28
Speaker 5: Us that are plenty of events.
22:30
Speaker 11: Yeah, yeah, but it's looking it's looking really promising, and
22:33
Speaker 11: we get a lot of people who show up at
22:35
Speaker 11: the gate because we don't increase the price at the gate.
22:36
Speaker 11: We want to give everybody equal opportunities to get here,
22:39
Speaker 11: get into the city and have a good time. And
22:42
Speaker 11: I would say, to answer your question, we're probably gonna
22:44
Speaker 11: get close to selling out, if not sell out.
22:46
Speaker 5: All right, So somebody's listening right now, they say, well,
22:48
Speaker 5: it sounds like a good time. Going to be out
22:50
Speaker 5: on the boulevard, but I'm not. I'm not really a
22:52
Speaker 5: beer person. That's fair, you say, Well, we have we
22:54
Speaker 5: have selters.
22:56
Speaker 11: We have some meeds which is sort of like wine
22:58
Speaker 11: if you will. We have slushies this year. There's a
23:01
Speaker 11: couple of different vendors doing slushies which they sound really good.
23:05
Speaker 11: So there is something pretty much for everyone. Some ciders
23:08
Speaker 11: as well, but we also have like nine really great
23:11
Speaker 11: food vendors this year. We've added a few food vendors
23:13
Speaker 11: this year, on top of some really great retail and
23:15
Speaker 11: artists and nonprofit vendors that'll be there as well, and
23:19
Speaker 11: there really is something for everyone. Also, we have really
23:22
Speaker 11: great live entertainment on our East stage. We have Brenda
23:25
Speaker 11: and the Boys and the Girl opening things up, and
23:27
Speaker 11: then we have Emmy Davis closing out from five point
23:30
Speaker 11: thirty to seven on our East stage, and then DJ
23:32
Speaker 11: EJ will be performing the entire duration of the event
23:35
Speaker 11: on our West stage.
23:36
Speaker 5: Yeah, and you got in case you didn't catch up,
23:38
Speaker 5: they're actually two different stages.
23:40
Speaker 11: Yeah, that's something that we added that last year and
23:42
Speaker 11: it was a huge We got so much good feedback
23:44
Speaker 11: on that, and so we're keeping that we're keeping that
23:46
Speaker 11: going because the length of the event itself, I mean,
23:48
Speaker 11: it goes literally from almost Greenbrier Street to California Avenue.
23:51
Speaker 11: And if people and truston are familiar with that, that's
23:53
Speaker 11: the whole span of the Capitol complet run Capitol Building
23:56
Speaker 11: where the dome is pretty much plus more so, if
23:59
Speaker 11: you're at one end of the you won't be able
24:00
Speaker 11: to hear the music at the others.
24:01
Speaker 5: So yeah, we want to keep a vibe going no
24:04
Speaker 5: matter where you're standing. And what about parking?
24:08
Speaker 11: Free parking in the in the Capitol Garage, and there's
24:10
Speaker 11: also parking all around the neighborhood, so there's ample parking
24:13
Speaker 11: available with a pretty short distance to walk. And nobody's
24:16
Speaker 11: really ever had an issue with parking in the house. No,
24:18
Speaker 11: I mean, but just know that you know you're you're
24:21
Speaker 11: not gonna be able to park like inside the gate.
24:25
Speaker 12: So just that I was just going to say, speaking
24:28
Speaker 12: of parking and speaking of maybe not being a beer person.
24:30
Speaker 12: We also offer designated driver ticket for free, So if
24:34
Speaker 12: you're bringing along someone that's going to be driving you
24:36
Speaker 12: home who's parked in one of the free garages or
24:39
Speaker 12: free spots, they can get in for free and wander around,
24:44
Speaker 12: listen to the music, have a good time with their friends,
24:46
Speaker 12: but then still get their people home safely.
24:49
Speaker 5: That's a very important part of it too. And we
24:51
Speaker 5: want to always always preach safety in these issues. And
24:54
Speaker 5: we want everybody to come out and have a good time,
24:56
Speaker 5: but you also want you to do it responsibly as well,
24:59
Speaker 5: and we do not encourage at all you partaking and
25:03
Speaker 5: then driving.
25:03
Speaker 11: That's right that we made that decision a few years
25:05
Speaker 11: ago to make sure that the the that that ticket
25:08
Speaker 11: is free, the designated driver ticket is free. You get
25:09
Speaker 11: a special red wrist band. You still have access to
25:11
Speaker 11: the food vendors, to the entertainment. We just don't charge
25:14
Speaker 11: you to come in. You just don't get access to
25:15
Speaker 11: the beer. And then of course we as you heard
25:18
Speaker 11: last year, we would say from stage several times, get
25:21
Speaker 11: you know, make sure to Helen Uber, give see an
25:23
Speaker 11: h a call, you know, or make sure you're with
25:25
Speaker 11: your designated driver.
25:26
Speaker 5: And that does that.
25:27
Speaker 11: And this year that's not just for right after the event,
25:29
Speaker 11: but also after during foam, after the dome as well.
25:33
Speaker 5: All right, and so the growth of the craft beer industry, Rick,
25:38
Speaker 5: I mean, it's just absolutely incredible. I mean, it's the
25:42
Speaker 5: you know, it's grown like you wouldn't believe. And if
25:45
Speaker 5: you study this stuff, as I know folks like you
25:48
Speaker 5: do and Tim Brady and some of those other folks,
25:51
Speaker 5: you see the all the attention that West Virginia is
25:55
Speaker 5: getting on a nationwide stage. I mean weekly, every every
25:59
Speaker 5: Friday has beer fried. When they talk about the various
26:01
Speaker 5: craft beers that are available, West Virginia is right in
26:04
Speaker 5: the middle of all of things. I mean, we're a
26:05
Speaker 5: leader in this. Yeah, you know, it's interesting.
26:08
Speaker 11: It's now been ten years since that really important bill
26:11
Speaker 11: passed in our in our state legislature, and I was,
26:13
Speaker 11: I was. I worked really hard with then Senator Walters
26:18
Speaker 11: and a few other key delegates on and senators on
26:21
Speaker 11: that bill. It was really kind of it was too pronged.
26:24
Speaker 11: It was one to create incentives to expand and increase
26:28
Speaker 11: the number of craft beer offerings in the state through
26:32
Speaker 11: allowing for easier access for them to open a craft brewery,
26:37
Speaker 11: and we saw that be very successful. And then also
26:40
Speaker 11: which we never thought would be as big of a
26:41
Speaker 11: deal as it was, was the growler the bill to
26:43
Speaker 11: allow for seals for the filling of growlers in establishments
26:48
Speaker 11: outside of just I think believe, I believe Class B
26:50
Speaker 11: what the ABC considers, and getting those bills passed was
26:56
Speaker 11: huge for seeing the growth of the craft beer industry
26:59
Speaker 11: in the state of West Virginia. The reason we got
27:01
Speaker 11: involved with that was because we wanted to see more
27:03
Speaker 11: of those types of small businesses in our districts, not
27:05
Speaker 11: just in Charleston and our districts, but certainly everywhere. We
27:07
Speaker 11: wanted to make sure that that culture existed across the state.
27:11
Speaker 11: And ten years later we're seeing to your point, I mean, yo,
27:14
Speaker 11: I mean I would say that West Virginia certainly is
27:16
Speaker 11: Charleston specifically, that's right.
27:18
Speaker 12: Yeah, I mean I think I moved to Charleston in
27:21
Speaker 12: twenty twenty, and not to get all weepy, but when
27:25
Speaker 12: I walk downtown Brawley, Summer Street, Capitol Street, looking at
27:29
Speaker 12: it now compared to when I moved here in twenty twenty,
27:31
Speaker 12: of course, it was pandemic times, but even despite that,
27:34
Speaker 12: they were just not as many. Obviously five Street short story,
27:38
Speaker 12: those folks weren't there, and now it's everything is just alive.
27:43
Speaker 12: You can tell they're people walking around with the new
27:46
Speaker 12: PoTA rules. I mean, people are just so happy to
27:49
Speaker 12: be out and about and I know those small businesses
27:51
Speaker 12: are thriving.
27:51
Speaker 5: So and one another thing I will point out, because
27:54
Speaker 5: as you said, I'll be down there, all of our
27:56
Speaker 5: stations are going to be there. Zero issues as far
27:59
Speaker 5: as you know, I mean people so I don't want
28:01
Speaker 5: to go, you know, all the stereotypes I don't want
28:04
Speaker 5: to go, or there's gonna be a bunch of drunks.
28:06
Speaker 5: I saw none of that, and there was absolutely there's
28:08
Speaker 5: been zero arrests or anything like that. No issues at all.
28:11
Speaker 11: Our target as far as our events are concerned, and
28:13
Speaker 11: what will see bleed into the business districts for from
28:16
Speaker 11: after the Dome, I mean our target audience, if you will,
28:19
Speaker 11: for attendees really does it's like twenty one to sixty five.
28:22
Speaker 11: I mean the range is huge, and you know, it's
28:26
Speaker 11: a lot of folks who, you know, they're not there
28:28
Speaker 11: to quote unquote party. They're not there to like you
28:30
Speaker 11: know what. I don't know how to even word that.
28:33
Speaker 11: I'll just say, to a party, it's not a frat party.
28:35
Speaker 12: It's it's not I mean the colleagues and friends and
28:39
Speaker 12: family just spending time together.
28:41
Speaker 5: That's right.
28:41
Speaker 11: Yeah, And they act the same way whenever they come
28:44
Speaker 11: downtown because they're again they're coming to eat, they're coming
28:47
Speaker 11: to socialize, to network, to visit family that's coming in
28:51
Speaker 11: from out of town for this event. We've seen that
28:53
Speaker 11: happen so many times. People use our event as a
28:55
Speaker 11: reason to come into town to visit family. And so no,
28:59
Speaker 11: there's been no issue all and we don't foresee anything.
29:01
Speaker 5: And we had a texture since can designated drivers by
29:03
Speaker 5: sodas like cokes and pepsis or things of that.
29:06
Speaker 11: We don't actually want. We have free water, have a
29:09
Speaker 11: ton of free water available. But but we we have
29:11
Speaker 11: never added like the soda elementary okay event now, we
29:15
Speaker 11: just never have done that. Actually no, but you could
29:16
Speaker 11: bring it like you want to bring.
29:20
Speaker 2: It in.
29:20
Speaker 12: I mean, don't bring like a whole cooler.
29:22
Speaker 5: Yeah, don't show up with your cooler a bud light.
29:25
Speaker 11: There's no like sitting space at fun with the dome
29:27
Speaker 11: for like the we don't allow coolers. But certainly if
29:30
Speaker 11: you have your container, like your water bottle, whatever it is,
29:32
Speaker 11: certainly you're.
29:32
Speaker 5: Welcome to bring them all right, all right? Where can
29:35
Speaker 5: people get tickets?
29:36
Speaker 11: Foam CWV dot com is the fastest way to get
29:39
Speaker 11: tickets Also there's up to date information almost daily on
29:42

Speaker 11: of lifetime achievement a word, right, like if I could

30:43
Speaker 5: Steve Animal beer. Somebody asked me the other day, I
30:45

Speaker 5: not all volunteered, you know, to go to with the sampling.
30:51
Speaker 5: For some reason, they didn't take me up on that.
30:53
Speaker 5: I don't know why, but I have not tasted yet.
30:55
Speaker 5: Somebody asked me what was like. I said, it's going
30:58
Speaker 5: to probably have an odor of bad decisions because it's
31:02
Speaker 5: Steve Animal, but other than that, it'll be delicious. I'm
31:05
Speaker 5: sure to make you make bad decisions. Yes, yes, it
31:07

Speaker 5: Rick, always good to see you. I was just thinking
31:39
Speaker 5: about this when you said we'll close with this, to
31:42
Speaker 5: think about this, when you were talking about working on
31:43
Speaker 5: that built ten years ago. Do you realize it was
31:45
Speaker 5: ten years ago that you and I went through leadership
31:47
Speaker 5: was Rginia.
31:49
Speaker 11: I was thinking about that because that was all happening
31:50
Speaker 11: at the same time.
31:51
Speaker 12: I must have gone through leadership when you were like
31:53
Speaker 12: five years older.
31:53
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's how right, Go ahead, go ahead here now

Speaker 5: to be going on tomorrow as a there's a federal holiday,
35:39
Speaker 5: and I'm gonna get into that a little bit later
35:41
Speaker 5: on because a lot of businesses will be closed tomorrow, banks,
35:43
Speaker 5: post offices, things of that nature. Juneteenth celebrations we'll be
35:46
Speaker 5: going on across the country, including here in Charleston. And
35:49
Speaker 5: I didn't, as I said earlier, Scheff Key is here.
35:52
Speaker 5: I didn't really plan to make this the food and
35:54
Speaker 5: Drink show. It just kind of fell that way. It
35:56
Speaker 5: started with Millie Snyder and Inn fohone with the Dome
35:59
Speaker 5: is Happy Saturday. Just had a Rick Cavanar and company
36:01
Speaker 5: on talk about that. And now you're going to talk
36:03
Speaker 5: about a little bit of the food aspects of Juneteenth,
36:05
Speaker 5: right I sure am?
36:06
Speaker 8: I mean who doesn't love food?
36:07
Speaker 5: I'm a fan. Okay, See, I think I told you
36:10
Speaker 5: this when you're in the Midday Show. I started eating
36:12
Speaker 5: when I was really young and just never got out
36:14
Speaker 5: of the habit, you know, and I'm probably gonna do
36:17
Speaker 5: it as long as I live.
36:18
Speaker 8: There was no body you had straight straight food.
36:20
Speaker 5: Yeah, you get that boy chicken leg and he'll be fine.
36:24
Speaker 5: He'll be fine. All right, So let's talk about what's
36:27
Speaker 5: going on with the Juneteenth. So Tom, let me hold
36:29
Speaker 5: on back up? Are you interrupt you here? Let's talk
36:33
Speaker 5: about Juneteenth. What's the meaning to you?
36:35
Speaker 16: Juneteenth to me is I always love to tell people
36:38
Speaker 16: like it's a celebration of what African Americans are doing now.
36:41
Speaker 16: So it's like the three c's culture, celebration and community.
36:45
Speaker 16: That's what I'm all about, and so I love to
36:47
Speaker 16: showcase what the great things that we're doing here in
36:50
Speaker 16: West Virginia. Of course, you know, Juneteenth is when the
36:54
Speaker 16: slaves really heard you know, okay, we're free now, but
36:56
Speaker 16: it didn't get to everyone.
36:58
Speaker 5: So people were still it wasn't posted on it int
37:00
Speaker 5: come on.
37:00
Speaker 16: Now there was a social media back then, and so like,
37:03
Speaker 16: I just love to put a spotlight on African Americans
37:06
Speaker 16: and all the great things that we're doing that we
37:07
Speaker 16: can continue to do. Of course, I love to, you know,
37:09
Speaker 16: showcase the history, but there's like, let's just focus on
37:12
Speaker 16: what we're doing right now.
37:13
Speaker 5: We're doing great things, all right. And again, so what's
37:17
Speaker 5: going on locally here in Charleston.
37:19
Speaker 16: So tomorrow I'm having the second annual West Virginia June
37:23
Speaker 16: tenth Farm to Table Dinner. Like I said, I don't
37:25
Speaker 16: know if many people know, but I became the first
37:27
Speaker 16: African American and female chef to host the farm to
37:30
Speaker 16: table dinner and celebration of the holiday at just twenty
37:33
Speaker 16: six years old. I mean, I think that's a big mouthstone,
37:36
Speaker 16: not just for myself but for the state of West Virginia.
37:39
Speaker 16: And so tomorrow I'm putting on a four course dinner
37:42
Speaker 16: and we can get straight into the menu.
37:43
Speaker 8: If that sounds like.
37:44
Speaker 2: Where is it?
37:44
Speaker 5: Because I'll I'll get all messed up talking about the food.
37:47
Speaker 5: I won't even tell people where it is.
37:48
Speaker 8: Is at the Capital Market. It's on the pavilion.
37:50
Speaker 16: They'll be outside, Okay, yeah, at the Capital Market from
37:54
Speaker 16: six pm to eight pm.
37:55
Speaker 5: All right, all right, now let's get to the menu.
37:57
Speaker 8: Okay, let's get into many we're diving in.
37:58
Speaker 16: So the first course is fried vegetarian chicken sandwich in
38:02
Speaker 16: your probably like, what is that?
38:03
Speaker 8: Okay?
38:03
Speaker 16: Instead of using chicken, I'm gonna use mushrooms. I'm using
38:06
Speaker 16: the Lion's main mushroom for one of my black farmers,
38:09
Speaker 16: Michael Colbert. And that's gonna be on a plantain focasta bread.
38:13
Speaker 16: So I'm making my own bread and it's gonna be
38:15
Speaker 16: paired with some jerks law and some house pickles that
38:17
Speaker 16: I'm gonna make. Let's dive into the second course. It's
38:20
Speaker 16: gonna be a melon salad. I'm gonna have watermelon, cucumber,
38:24
Speaker 16: feta crumble, pistachios, cherry tomatoes, and I'm gonna make alignment
38:28
Speaker 16: vinagrette and a lot of that produce is gonna come
38:30
Speaker 16: from McDowell County, which I was just there yesterday with
38:33
Speaker 16: Jason Tart and Donny Harrison. And then a lot of
38:35
Speaker 16: that produce is gonna come locally from Charleston, from Dureux
38:37
Speaker 16: Miller's Delaware farm Garden.
38:39
Speaker 8: On the west Side. Okay, third course is what I'm
38:42
Speaker 8: like pumped about. But the fourth course too. I think
38:45
Speaker 8: you'll love the fourth course.
38:46
Speaker 5: I love the first two.
38:48
Speaker 16: The third course is a grilled lamb and it's gonna
38:51
Speaker 16: be paired with a sweet potato mash, collar greens, and
38:54
Speaker 16: like a little spicy pepper sauce. So I love red meat,
38:58
Speaker 16: like I was telling you when I was on from
38:59
Speaker 16: Memorial Day, like I love.
39:00
Speaker 8: To grow red meat. So lamb it is.
39:04
Speaker 5: Okay, fourth course, this is for you. Okay, O three
39:09
Speaker 5: but go ahead.
39:10
Speaker 8: So Dancing Dog is making me.
39:12
Speaker 16: Dancing Dog Cafe on the West Side is making me
39:14
Speaker 16: a boozy peach Callbler ice cream, and it's gonna have
39:17
Speaker 16: bisc Off cookies in it. It's gonna have some boozy
39:19
Speaker 16: bourbon peaches in there. I'm gonna top it with some
39:22
Speaker 16: pecans and some shaved coconut just to cool you.
39:25
Speaker 8: Down for the evening.
39:26
Speaker 5: Wow.
39:26
Speaker 8: Yeah, let's bring it all together, bringing those bowl flavors.
39:30
Speaker 5: And I mean it sounds like an incredible menu. And
39:32
Speaker 5: it's happening over at the pavilion at Capitol Market. And
39:34
Speaker 5: where do people get tickets?
39:35
Speaker 16: Well, you can get tickets next year, but I'm happy
39:39
Speaker 16: to say that this event is sold out.
39:41
Speaker 5: So you're just teasing people right now. Sorry, Well we're
39:43
Speaker 5: promoting for next year.
39:44
Speaker 16: Yes, So this event will happen every single year on
39:48
Speaker 16: June tenth, as long as I'm alive and I can
39:50
Speaker 16: grace my presence in West Virginia.
39:52
Speaker 5: And one of the great things I learned about you,
39:54
Speaker 5: and again we're talking with Chef Key, is you're not
39:56
Speaker 5: from here.
39:56
Speaker 3: I am not.
39:57
Speaker 16: I'm from Alexandria, Virginia. I originally came here because I
39:59
Speaker 16: was going to go to West Virginia State University.
40:01
Speaker 8: I was running away from home. How far could I go?
40:03
Speaker 8: West Virginia was.
40:05
Speaker 5: And you got here and you liked it so much
40:07
Speaker 5: that you stayed.
40:08
Speaker 10: Yeah.
40:08
Speaker 16: I love West Virginia so much, and it hurts my
40:12
Speaker 16: heart when I hear people who are from here who
40:14
Speaker 16: speak down on it. It's so many beautiful things that
40:16
Speaker 16: West Virginia has to offer. You just have to take
40:19
Speaker 16: what it gives. And West Virginia has given me so much.
40:21
Speaker 16: And I'm so proud to be here and to be
40:23
Speaker 16: a leader here.
40:24
Speaker 5: And I love the fact again you're a younger person
40:27
Speaker 5: and you're not from here. The old saying goes, not
40:30
Speaker 5: from here. But I got here as quickly as I could.
40:32
Speaker 5: And you're here, and you're choosing to stay here.
40:35
Speaker 8: Yes I could.
40:36
Speaker 16: I told my friends all They're like, when you're going
40:38
Speaker 16: to come back home or you know, I could run
40:40
Speaker 16: back home whenever I want. But I feel like I
40:42
Speaker 16: have a purpose and a mission to stay here, and
40:44
Speaker 16: you know, put events like this one.
40:47
Speaker 8: If not me, then who what is it that.
40:49
Speaker 5: Makes West Virginia such a welcoming place?
40:51
Speaker 15: Do you?
40:52
Speaker 8: The people?
40:53
Speaker 16: The people have wokened me, open arms. The support is
40:57
Speaker 16: no second guess, no question, and that makes me want
41:01
Speaker 16: to stay here. You guys enjoy me, and I enjoy.
41:03
Speaker 5: That right and talk about what you do outside the
41:05
Speaker 5: Juneteenth thing. Talk about your normal day to day.
41:08
Speaker 8: My normal day to day.
41:09
Speaker 16: I'm a market manager at MS Ruby's Corner Market. It's
41:11
Speaker 16: Darrell Miller's Keep Your Faith Corporation market on the west side,
41:14
Speaker 16: and so from the day to day, I imagine it
41:16
Speaker 16: managing maybe five people in the market. We're doing a
41:19
Speaker 16: lot of farming on Delaware Avenue. We actually have some
41:21
Speaker 16: garden beds in the back that were actually starting to
41:24
Speaker 16: get up. And so I do catering private chef. But
41:28
Speaker 16: I guess now I'm an advocate for my community, which
41:30
Speaker 16: I never would have imagined.
41:32
Speaker 5: I would have been right, right, And so the whole
41:37
Speaker 5: concept of Miss Ruby's Market I've had derel on. I
41:39
Speaker 5: know you were on the you've been on before too.
41:41
Speaker 5: It's an amazing, amazing concept.
41:43
Speaker 8: I love what Daniell Miller is doing. I mean, he
41:45
Speaker 8: just had a vision and he just made it real.
41:49
Speaker 8: He made it into reality, and I just admire that
41:51
Speaker 8: so much.
41:52
Speaker 5: And imparting upon young people the I'm talking about way
41:57
Speaker 5: younger than you. You know, young people, the pride that
42:01
Speaker 5: you can take in growing your own stuff and we're
42:05
Speaker 5: taking your own seeds and okay, yeah, I went to
42:07
Speaker 5: I went to you know whatever grocery store and bought that.
42:09
Speaker 5: That's fine, but I actually grew that. That's actually that's
42:12
Speaker 5: actually mine.
42:13
Speaker 16: I made that, and that's a rewarding experience. Sometimes I'm like,
42:16
Speaker 16: don't water my plants. I want to water my plants.
42:18
Speaker 16: But you know, like, that's how rewarding it is. You
42:20
Speaker 16: can put you can sew a seed in the ground
42:22
Speaker 16: and then just in a couple months, on a couple
42:24
Speaker 16: of days, you see a sprout. That's how you sustain
42:27
Speaker 16: on your own, just educating yourself on how to grow food.
42:30
Speaker 5: And Durell told me when I had him on the show,
42:32
Speaker 5: he said, that's when I saw that light bulb go off,
42:35
Speaker 5: you know, because people are thinking, Avis, this is corny,
42:38
Speaker 5: no pun intended, I don't want to be involved in this.
42:39
Speaker 5: And then when they said, wait, hold up, I did
42:42
Speaker 5: that exhibited the light bulb. Man, it goes off, all right.
42:45
Speaker 5: So we got activities going on, of course on Friday
42:49
Speaker 5: as well. I had Ray whiteing on the show early
42:50
Speaker 5: this week to talk about all those activities. I got
42:52
Speaker 5: a little little graphic post on my social media about that.
42:55
Speaker 5: But your event is actually on juneteenth.
42:57
Speaker 8: On June teeth.
42:58
Speaker 16: If I'm going to celebrate June teeth, I'm going to
43:00
Speaker 16: celebrate on June tenth.
43:02
Speaker 7: On the day, all right.
43:04
Speaker 5: And it's a capital market. Unfortunately, it is sold out.
43:06
Speaker 8: It is sold out.
43:07
Speaker 16: I'm sorry, but you can look forward to, you know,
43:09
