- 0:00Most people spend their lives trying to avoid thinking about the end, but sometimes it is
- 0:18in life's final chapters that we discover its greatest truths.
- 0:23Today's story takes us to the bedside of a dying pastor whose faith was stronger than his failing
- 0:30body. In his final days, he penned a prayer that has echoed through churches, hospitals,
- 0:37battlefields, and funeral services for generations. Welcome to Traveler's Tales,
- 0:43produced by Enjoying the Journey. I'm your host, Greg Dowdy. We love sharing stories of faith from
- 0:49fellow travelers, believers whose lives remind us that God is faithful in every season. And today,
- 0:57we meet a man who discovered that when strength fades and earthly comforts fail, Christ remains.
- 1:05A special thanks to Jerry Vargo for his research and insight that help us better understand the
- 1:12people and events behind these powerful stories. Let's journey together into the life of Henry
- 1:19Francis Light and the story behind the hymn, Abide With Me. It's fascinating to consider how
- 1:26differently people speak when they know their time is short. The things that once seemed important
- 1:34fade into the background. The noise of life grows quiet, and what remains are the things that matter
- 1:42most. Faith, family, eternity, and the presence of God. Throughout history, some of the most powerful
- 1:52words ever spoken have come from people standing near the end of life's journey. They were not
- 1:58speaking from a place of strength, but from weakness. Not from comfort, but from suffering.
- 2:06And yet, because they had walked with God, they discovered that His presence was enough.
- 2:13One such man was Henry Francis Light. The hymn, Abide With Me, is one of the most beloved songs
- 2:21ever written about God's comfort and His sustaining grace. Henry Francis Light was
- 2:27a Scotsman born in Kelso, Scotland on June 1, 1793. A gifted student, he graduated from Trinity
- 2:36College in Dublin, Ireland in 1814, earning distinction as a poet and winning the college's
- 2:42prestigious English Prize poem three times. For 24 years, Light faithfully pastored a congregation
- 2:49in the fishing village of Brixham on England's southwest coast. He loved his people, he preached
- 2:55the scriptures, and throughout his life wrote poetry and hymns that reflected his deep devotion
- 3:02to Christ. Yet the hymn for which he would be remembered around the world was written in the
- 3:09shadow of death. For years, Light battled tuberculosis. His health steadily declined until
- 3:17it became clear that his ministry and even his life were drawing to a close. A few weeks before
- 3:24his death, he announced his desire to preach one final sermon to the congregation he loved.
- 3:31His family and friends urged him not to attempt it. He was far too weak. The effort could cost him
- 3:38what little strength remained, but Light often said, it is better to wear out than to rust out.
- 3:46Determined to deliver one last message, he pressed on. On that final Sunday, he stood before his
- 3:54people and preached. Some accounts say he was so weak that he had to crawl to the pulpit and lean
- 4:01upon it for support as he spoke. Yet with breathless attention, his congregation listened
- 4:09as their pastor delivered his farewell message. Later that afternoon, he rested in his study.
- 4:16There, reflecting on his health and the nearness of eternity, he penned the word that would become
- 4:24Abide With Me. The inspiration came from Luke 24, where the disciples on the road to Emmaus
- 4:31urged the risen Christ. They constrained him, saying, Abide with us, for it is toward evening,
- 4:38and the day is far spent. As Light wrote, he could sense that the evening of his own life
- 4:45was approaching. The shadows were lengthening. The journey was almost complete. So he prayed,
- 4:53Abide with me. Fast falls the even tide. The darkness deepens. Lord, with me, abide.
- 5:02When other helpers fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, O, abide with me.
- 5:10Shortly afterward, Light left England in hopes that the warmer climate of Italy might improve
- 5:16his health. During the journey, he mailed a revised copy of the hymn to his wife, Anne.
- 5:22A few days later, on November 20, 1847, while resting on the French Riviera,
- 5:29Henry Francis Light entered the presence of the Lord. A minister who was with him during
- 5:34his final hours recorded his last words, Peace, joy! What a testimony! At first glance,
- 5:43it may seem surprising that a hymn written by a dying man would become one of the most
- 5:49cherished hymns in the Christian faith. But the reason is simple. Abide with me is not merely
- 5:55a hymn about dying. It is a hymn about living. It reminds us that the greatest need of every
- 6:03believer is the presence of Christ. We need Him when the sun is shining and when the shadows fall.
- 6:10We need Him in seasons of strength, and we need Him in moments of weakness. We need Him when
- 6:17friends stand beside us, and we need Him when other helpers fail. We need Him in life, and we
- 6:24need Him in death. That is why this hymn continues to resonate with believers generation after
- 6:31generation. It echoes the prayer of every dependent heart. Lord, stay near. Lord, help me.
- 6:38Lord, abide with me. Perhaps the most beautiful line in the hymn is found at its conclusion.
- 6:44In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me. What a prayer! What a comfort! What a Savior!
- 6:54Whether we are walking through the brightest day or the darkest night, the promise of the
- 7:00Christian life is not that we walk alone. Christ Himself walks with us, and that is always enough.
