- 0:00This is a Tabernacle tidbit, a bite sized Tabernacle talk of 5
- 0:05minutes or less to help you get through your day when you only
- 0:09have a little bit of time. You.
- 0:10Hope this helps you know Christ your own His word and show His
- 0:13love to others. Let's get started.
- 0:17Hello, and welcome back to Tabernacle Tidbits.
- 0:19Today we are in Second Timothy chapter 4 and verse #13 we are
- 0:24in the last letter that the apostle Paul wrote before his
- 0:28death, and he's writing to his son in the faith, Timothy, and
- 0:31he's giving some instructions. He wants Timothy to leave where
- 0:36he's at right now in Ephesus, and he wants him to make his way
- 0:40as as quickly as he can to Paul, where Paul is imprisoned in the
- 0:44capital city of Rome. And he writes in verse #13 when
- 0:49you come, bring the cloak. I left Intro as with Carpus, as
- 0:53well as the scrolls, especially the parchments.
- 0:57I'm going to read that verse one more time.
- 0:58When you come, bring the cloak. I left Intro as with Carpus, as
- 1:02well as the scrolls, especially the parchments.
- 1:06Now you might say, OK. Brian, what in the world are we
- 1:08doing? How are?
- 1:09We going to get something from this today.
- 1:10We'll see a couple practical things that we have for this.
- 1:15He says, when you come, bring the cloak here.
- 1:20There is a physical need that the apostle Paul has, something
- 1:25that he does not possess, that he's in need of right now.
- 1:28He's cold. And as we'll read in verse #21
- 1:33it'll be several days from now that we'll be in it in
- 1:35Tabernacle tidbits. But he tells Timothy, hey, try
- 1:39your best. Make every effort to come before
- 1:41winter, 'cause I'm really cold right now.
- 1:44Can I tell you? One of the problems that we
- 1:47often have as people of God, especially in America, is we
- 1:53tend to shy away from being open with other people about our
- 1:59physical needs. There is something about it in
- 2:02our culture that we feel as though it is shameful in some
- 2:07way to ever be lacking in anything physically.
- 2:10So if we're struggling financially, or if we're
- 2:13struggling with food, or if we're struggling with clothing,
- 2:16we don't want anyone else to know we we don't want people to
- 2:19think perhaps that maybe we're lazy.
- 2:22We don't want people to think that we're unable to do what's
- 2:27needed to be self-sufficient. But what I love here in this
- 2:30verse is Paul's just laying it out on the line there.
- 2:33There are some other things that he says throughout this chapter
- 2:36that are helpful that we would realize, OK, these are necessary
- 2:41things for being human. But even as I've mentioned
- 2:44before in the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus says that
- 2:47when we're praying to God, we're asking, give us today Our Daily
- 2:51Bread, or if you will give us what we need today, that we can
- 2:58go to our heavenly Father. But one of the ways that God
- 3:01might answer our request for our needs is through other people.
- 3:06And so we can have an openness and an honesty, especially with
- 3:11other brothers and sisters in the Lord, especially in the
- 3:14context of the local church, that we can have an openness
- 3:17that we can say, hey, I'm struggling with this right now.
- 3:20Would you pray with me for this? And it might give someone else
- 3:24the opportunity to be the hands and feet of Jesus, to provide
- 3:29for you and to love you, that you would experience God's
- 3:33provision in a real, tangible way through other people
- 3:38reaching out and loving you and caring for you.
- 3:41And I want to encourage you when you hear about needs that other
- 3:45people have. We just went through not too
- 3:49long ago, First John 3, where in first John, I think it's 316 or
- 3:55317, the apostle would write to that church.
- 3:58If someone says that they love their Christian brother or
- 4:01sister and they hear that they have a need, but they shut up
- 4:06their heart that they will not be compassionate or care for
- 4:10their Christian brother or sister.
- 4:12He says, how in the world can they say that the love of God
- 4:16has made a home in their life? Give people the opportunity to
- 4:21love others and if you are a person that hears of an
- 4:24opportunity to love and to care for your brothers and sisters,
- 4:26especially in your local church, you ought to take advantage of
- 4:31that. Now that might be like a
- 4:33physical need. Someone might need a meal, they
- 4:35might need some help with finances, they might need some
- 4:38clothing or something. But it also might be that they
- 4:41need encouragement. They need some love, that the
- 4:44world is just beating them down. Their family members, if you
- 4:48will, you know, could talk, be talking smack about them and
- 4:52they just need someone to encourage them.
- 4:55Will you be that person? Will you love them in that real,
- 4:58tangible, practical way? All right, so I'm going to take
- 5:03the very end of this episode and then look at the last thing that
- 5:06Paul says. So he says, when you come, bring
- 5:07the cloak I left in trials with Karpis, he says, as well as the
- 5:11scrolls, especially the parchments. 2 things I want to
- 5:15look at here. These parchments would most
- 5:18likely have been portions of scripture, whether that was, you
- 5:22know, things written now in the New Testament, maybe by Luke or
- 5:25by Paul, could be Old Testament scriptures.
- 5:28But here Paul places an importance on reading even while
- 5:32he's in prison. I've heard it said many times
- 5:35before, leaders are readers and readers are leaders.
- 5:40And here Paul exemplifies this. He says, I want to read.
- 5:43I want to have the scrolls, he says, but especially the
- 5:46parchments. May we place importance on what
- 5:49we read. And 1st and primarily the word
- 5:52of God. Thanks for tuning in.
- 5:54See you next time.
