• 0:22
Speaker 2: You can be turning there.
• 0:24
Speaker 2: My kids tell me that I'm old, david, let's don't talk about gray hair.
• 0:34
  Speaker 2: I don't feel that old.
• 0:37
  Speaker 2: I remember college.
• 0:39
Speaker 2: There's one particular class.
• 0:40
Speaker 2: I graduated from Mississippi College, went to seminary, took a year out of seminary to work at the BSU at Southern Miss.
• 0:45
Speaker 2: While I was at Southern Miss I thought, hey, there's a couple classes that I'm going to need.
• 0:50
Speaker 2: I'm going to pick them up.
• 0:51
Speaker 2: I'm going to pick them up while I'm here.
• 0:53
  Speaker 2: It'd be a great opportunity.
• 0:54
Speaker 2: It was German 201.
• 0:57
Speaker 2: I had taken German 101 and 102, and I was like I'm going to take German 201.
• 1:02
Speaker 2: Amber needed the class.
• 1:04
Speaker 2: We could go to class together.
• 1:06
Speaker 2: It was going to be perfect.
• 1:07
Speaker 2: Everything was just right.
• 1:09
Speaker 2: Went to the first class, left the first class and dropped it.
• 1:15
Speaker 2: The whole hour that we were in there I don't think the professor spoke one English word.
• 1:24
Speaker 2: The whole time I couldn't even tell you what the assignment was for the next class.
• 1:31
Speaker 2: I was totally lost.
• 1:33
Speaker 2: And to go into this class.
• 1:35
  Speaker 2: Here's the thing.
• 1:37
Speaker 2: The professor had expectations.
• 1:39
Speaker 2: Hey, listen, when you go to class, the professors are going to have expectations.
• 1:44
Speaker 2: There's things called syllabuses.
• 1:45
Speaker 2: Look at them, learn to read them.
• 1:47
Speaker 2: There's things that went in and she had expectations and I did not reach her expectations so I decided it was probably best for me to get out.
• 2:00
Speaker 2: As we come to Paul in Romans, chapter 8, there are some expectations that Paul has as we come to this passage today, at the end of Romans, chapter 8, verses 31 through 39.
• 2:13
Speaker 2: As we come to this passage, these expectations that Paul has, he needs us to kind of understand the first eight chapters of Romans and where he's been.
• 2:24
Speaker 2: One of the commentaries that I read is written by a guy named Tony Morita.
• 2:28
Speaker 2: He needs us to kind of understand the first eight chapters of Romans and where he's been.
• 2:33
Speaker 2: One of the commentaries that I read is written by a guy named Tony Morita.
• 2:35
Speaker 2: Tony really summarizes these first eight chapters very well.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: Let me read this to you quickly.
• 2:38
  Speaker 2: It's not long.
• 2:38
Speaker 2: When you begin the letter, you see Paul showing how the gospel has its roots in the Old Testament.
• 2:44
Speaker 2: Then he calls believers those who are also called by Jesus, loved by God, called saints.
• 2:52
Speaker 2: But when you read the first three chapters of Romans, you wonder how on earth you could be loved by God and be a saint, given how sinful humanity is, it's only because God has intervened in Christ Jesus, as Paul declares in Romans 3, 21 through 26.
• 3:12
Speaker 2: Beginning in 321, paul has been relentlessly unfolding the good news of the gospel.
• 3:20
Speaker 2: He has shown that through Christ, we believers are justified before God, we are reconciled to God, we enjoy peace with God, we are indwelt by the Spirit of God, we are not condemned before God, we are adopted by God, we have glorification, hope in God, we have help in the Spirit of God, we are called by God and we have the certainty that all things are working for good of those who love God.
• 3:58
Speaker 2: Now, as we come to this passage today, in verses 31 through 38, what we find here is that our lives and our eternal destinies are secured by God.
• 4:17
Speaker 2: Our lives, we find security in God.
• 4:22
Speaker 2: And listen, graduates, for you as you face a new challenge.
• 4:25
Speaker 2: You as you face a new challenge, as you face a new chapter, as as you, as you're looking to the future.
• 4:31
Speaker 2: Sometimes there are going to be times maybe not now, but there are going to be times where you go really, what am I doing?
• 4:40
Speaker 2: And I know you're going to have that, because even today, there are times where we go.
• 4:47
Speaker 2: Really, what are we doing?
• 4:50
  Speaker 2: I don't understand.
• 4:52
Speaker 2: There are going to be moments where life is overwhelming.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: There are going to be moments where we feel separated and we don't feel right.
• 5:03
Speaker 2: As David just challenged you to remind yourself of the gospel daily, remind yourself of the truth, because there's going to be moments that our feelings don't line up with the truth.
• 5:15
Speaker 2: So what we have to do is remind ourselves of the truth, and here's the truth that we're going to find in this passage.
• 5:23
Speaker 2: That was true for the Romans and is true for us.
• 5:26
Speaker 2: We are held in the hands of God as believers, as those who have trusted in Christ for our salvation.
• 5:36
Speaker 2: God holds us in our hands and he will never, ever, ever, let us go.
• 5:43
Speaker 2: So, as we come to this passage, we're going to read, and the challenge is that we can find our rest and find our security in God.
• 5:55
Speaker 2: So, if you're able this morning, I invite you to stand as we come to Romans, chapter 8.
• 5:59
Speaker 2: And we begin reading in verse 31.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: What, then, shall we say to these things?
• 6:06
Speaker 2: If God is for us, who can be against us?
• 6:09
Speaker 2: He who did not spare his own son, but gave him up for us.
• 6:13
Speaker 2: How will he not also, with him, graciously give us all things?
• 6:17
Speaker 2: Who shall bring a charge against God's elect?
• 6:20
Speaker 2: It is God who justifies.
• 6:22
Speaker 2: Who is to condemn?
• 6:24
Speaker 2: Christ Jesus is the one who died More than that, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who, indeed, is interceding for us.
• 6:33
Speaker 2: Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?
• 6:36
Speaker 2: Shall tribulation or distress or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger or sword, as it is written for your sake?
• 6:44
Speaker 2: We are being killed all the day long.
• 6:46
Speaker 2: We are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.
• 6:49
Speaker 2: No, in all these things, we are more than conquerors, through Him who loved us, for I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God.
• 7:11
Speaker 2: In Christ Jesus, our Lord.
• 7:14
  Speaker 2: Let's pray together.
• 7:15
Speaker 2: God, we thank you for your love for us.
• 7:19
Speaker 2: We thank you that you loved us so much that you sent your son and God.
• 7:24
  Speaker 2: We.
• 7:24
Speaker 2: We are so thankful that we have your words here before us, and we pray now that you will change our lives for all eternity because of the truth of your word.
• 7:34
Speaker 2: We love you and praise you In Jesus' name.
• 7:38
  Speaker 2: We pray, amen.
• 7:42
Speaker 2: The question that we're seeking to answer today is this how do we know?
• 7:46
Speaker 2: How do we know if our security rests in God and we want to find rest and hope and peace in God and find security in Him?
• 7:57
Speaker 2: How can we do that?
• 7:59
Speaker 2: How can we know and be confident that that will happen?
• 8:03
Speaker 2: I think there's three things here just quickly that we'll look at.
• 8:05
Speaker 2: First of all, is we know and be confident that that will happen?
• 8:05
Speaker 2: I think there's three things here just quickly that we'll look at.
• 8:07
Speaker 2: First of all is we know this.
• 8:09
Speaker 2: We can find our confidence in God and find our security in Him because God is for us.
• 8:17
Speaker 2: God is for us.
• 8:19
Speaker 2: Right there in the beginning, in verse 31, he asked some rhetorical questions.
• 8:22
Speaker 2: First he he says what then shall we say to these things?
• 8:25
Speaker 2: What are the things, the things that we just read about in the first eight chapters, all of that stuff leading up to this point?
• 8:32
Speaker 2: What shall we say about them?
• 8:33
Speaker 2: How do we feel about this?
• 8:34
Speaker 2: He goes on and says this if God is for us, who can be against us?
• 8:41
  Speaker 2: It's a rhetorical question.
• 8:45
Speaker 2: So you know the answer no one.
• 8:47
Speaker 2: We can find assurances in our security because of this, as believers.
• 8:55
Speaker 2: God is for us, he is on our side, he is with us, he is walking with us, he is for us.
• 9:05
Speaker 2: How do we know that he's for us?
• 9:07
Speaker 2: Well, it goes on to tell us.
• 9:09
Speaker 2: We know that God is forced because he gave his son.
• 9:15
Speaker 2: See, paul tells us in Ephesians that we are separated from God, that we are dead in our trespasses and sins, that we do not have life and there's no way that we can gain it because we can't pay the price that it costs to have life.
• 9:31
Speaker 2: That only comes in Jesus.
• 9:33
Speaker 2: So what God did is he gave us his son, who came and who lived a perfect life, who died in our place, who took the punishment that we deserve, who paid the price.
• 9:44
Speaker 2: And because he paid the price we can use this word he redeemed us by paying the price that we owed, the debt that that we owed.
• 9:52
Speaker 2: Jesus paid that for us.
• 9:55
Speaker 2: And so now, as you look at that and understand that God did not even spare his only son if he wouldn't spare Jesus, then why would he let us go?
• 10:06
  Speaker 2: He won't.
• 10:08
Speaker 2: We can have security because God gave the most precious thing that he had to redeem us.
• 10:16
Speaker 2: We find security in him because he is for us, because he sent Jesus to die in our place.
• 10:27
Speaker 2: He will keep us, his for us.
• 10:32
Speaker 2: Second, we see this Godifies us.
• 10:35
Speaker 2: He asked right there, in verse 33 and 34, he asked a couple more questions who shall bring a charge against God's elect?
• 10:42
Speaker 2: In verse 34, he said who will condemn?
• 10:45
  Speaker 2: Again, rhetorical questions.
• 10:48
Speaker 2: We know the answer no one can.
• 10:51
Speaker 2: No one can bring a charge against us.
• 10:55
  Speaker 2: And here's why.
• 10:57
Speaker 2: Because God justifies that word justify.
• 11:02
Speaker 2: It is a legal term, caitlin, you can come back later and describe this to us.
• 11:06
Speaker 2: Right, it is a legal term.
• 11:08
Speaker 2: Here's what it means.
• 11:09
Speaker 2: God has declared us to be righteous.
• 11:12
Speaker 2: But here's the problem with that.
• 11:15
Speaker 2: If God declares to be righteous without dealing with the sin, then he is not.
• 11:20
Speaker 2: Just Think about it.
• 11:22
Speaker 2: If there is someone who has been accused of the crime and all evidence points that this person is guilty, that they are guilty, there's numerous eyewitnesses, there's all the evidence points that this person is guilty, that they are guilty.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: There's numbers, numerous eyewitnesses.
• 11:34
Speaker 2: There's all the evidence points that this person is guilty, they know he's guilty, we've seen it, it's on video, it's undeniable.
• 11:42
Speaker 2: And a court comes in and they say you know what?
• 11:45
Speaker 2: We see, he's guilty, but we're going to have grace and we're going to let this person go free.
• 11:50
Speaker 2: That court just loses all credibility because it is not a just court.
• 11:54
Speaker 2: But here's what we know.
• 11:57
Speaker 2: God is just so.
• 12:00
Speaker 2: He can't just say, hey, be free, go free, because then he loses his justice.
• 12:09
Speaker 2: But in his justice he made a way for redemption because he sent Jesus Christ and because Jesus died on the cross and took the punishment that we deserve.
• 12:20
Speaker 2: Now God says hey, on those who believe in him, those who trust in him.
• 12:25
Speaker 2: He can declare them to be righteous, he can justify them because Christ paid the price.
• 12:32
Speaker 2: And we know the price was sufficient because Jesus didn't remain dead.
• 12:37
Speaker 2: What the resurrection proves to us is that Jesus' death was sufficient to buy our salvation.
• 12:47
Speaker 2: Redemption was good because Jesus arose.
• 12:56
Speaker 2: And now we have to ask the question but where's Jesus now?
• 13:00
Speaker 2: Have you ever wondered that?
• 13:02
  Speaker 2: Where's Jesus now?
• 13:03
Speaker 2: I mean, we know Jesus lived on the earth, right, we know he died and we know he arose.
• 13:08
Speaker 2: And we know that he ascended to heaven.
• 13:10
Speaker 2: And when he ascended to heaven, and when he ascended to heaven, he sent to us the holy spirit, who is now our advocate, our paraclete, what jesus did when he was on the earth.
• 13:18
Speaker 2: We have the holy spirit doing that for us now.
• 13:20
Speaker 2: So where is jesus?
• 13:21
Speaker 2: Well, paul tells us.
• 13:22
Speaker 2: He says that jesus is seated at the right hand of the throne of the father.
• 13:28
  Speaker 2: And here's what he's doing.
• 13:29
Speaker 2: He's not just sitting there going.
• 13:30
  Speaker 2: Here's what he's doing.
• 13:31
Speaker 2: He's not just sitting there going la-di-da-di-da, here's what he's doing.
• 13:33
Speaker 2: He is interceding for us.
• 13:37
Speaker 2: He is interceding for us.
• 13:44
Speaker 2: So, those moments when you are overwhelmed with life decisions, exams, deadlines at work, paycheck doesn't meet the end of the month, relationships In those moments where we are overwhelmed with life, the one who died and arose for us is sitting at the right hand of the Father, praying for us Because he justified us.
• 14:21
Speaker 2: We can find security knowing that God is for us, that he justifies us, and we find security finally this morning, in that he has made us more than conquerors.
• 14:35
Speaker 2: We are more than conquerors Not because of what I've done, not because of what you've done, not because you're graduating high school, not because you finished college, not because you have any degree, not because of the job you had, not because of the spouse you have, not because of the car you drive, not because of the house you live in, not because of the spouse you have, not because of the car you drive, not because of the house you live in, not because of how good a person you are, not because how many much money you have given to the church, not because how many times you've been to Sunday school.
• 15:00
  Speaker 2: None of that.
• 15:01
Speaker 2: That is not why you are a conqueror.
• 15:03
Speaker 2: We are more than conquerors, because Jesus died on the cross and arose for us and has justified us and through him, god holds us in his hands and nothing, nothing can separate us from that.
• 15:25
Speaker 2: He asks these questions.
• 15:26
Speaker 2: He says in verse 35,.
• 15:28
Speaker 2: He says who can separate us from the love of Christ?
• 15:30
Speaker 2: Shall, tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness or danger or sword.
• 15:37
Speaker 2: Listen, all of these are problems.
• 15:38
Speaker 2: These problems that he lists right here are problems that the people in Rome faced.
• 15:44
Speaker 2: They faced persecution, they faced distress, they faced the possibility of being naked because they couldn't buy clothes.
• 15:53
Speaker 2: They faced the sword.
• 15:55
Speaker 2: All of these are problems that they face.
• 15:58
Speaker 2: So, listen, if Paul is writing to us today, the list may look a little bit different.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: Can anxiety separate us from the love of Christ?
• 16:05
  Speaker 2: No.
• 16:06
  Speaker 2: Can depression, no.
• 16:08
Speaker 2: Can a terrible job, no.
• 16:10
Speaker 2: Can all of these things, think of the problems that you have, and hear me say this Nothing, none of those problems, can separate you from the love of Christ.
• 16:19
Speaker 2: None of them can overwhelm you, because you are more than conquerors, because Jesus came and he lived and he died and he arose on the cross.
• 16:29
Speaker 2: He arose from the grave for you and because he did that, god holds you in the palm of your hand and he will never, ever, ever, let you go, no matter what you face.
• 16:47
Speaker 2: He has another list of things that might separate.
• 16:51
Speaker 2: Towards the end, he said I am sure that neither death nor life, if you are facing death, it does not separate you from Christ.
• 17:02
Speaker 2: Or if life is good and you are living it up, it doesn't separate you from the love of Christ.
• 17:10
Speaker 2: It doesn't separate you from the love of Christ.
• 17:13
Speaker 2: He says things present, nor things to come.
• 17:25
Speaker 2: Listen, parents of graduates, can I be honest with you for a second?
• 17:27
Speaker 2: I've had a moment of being overwhelmed this week, overwhelmed by the future.
• 17:35
Speaker 2: But even in the midst of that, I know this nothing can separate me from the love of Christ and those I am sending off because he has trusted Christ.
• 17:48
Speaker 2: Nothing can separate Him from the love of Christ, and I have to remind myself of the truth of the gospel and know that God holds all of us believers in the palm of his hand and nothing, nothing, nothing can separate us from the love of Christ Of his hand and nothing, nothing, nothing Can separate us From the love Of Christ that we find In God.
• 18:21
Speaker 2: So now, I don't know where you are today.
• 18:22
Speaker 2: I need you to hear this, though.
• 18:26
Speaker 2: I need you to understand the promise that God holds us in his hand is a promise that he makes to believers.
• 18:37
Speaker 2: It is a conditional promise.
• 18:41
Speaker 2: It is a promise that he gives to those who have trusted in Christ for their salvation.
• 18:48
Speaker 2: If you've never done that, I pray that today you can find your eternal security, and not just eternal security, but you can find your security to face tomorrow in Christ, because today you trust in Him.
• 19:07
Speaker 2: May today be the day of salvation for you.
• 19:10
Speaker 2: Or, if you've trusted in Christ and life is overwhelming Because, believe me, it can be and you need to remind yourself that nothing, nothing that you face, can separate you from the love of Christ.
• 19:42
Speaker 2: We're about to enter into a time of invitation.
• 19:44
Speaker 2: If you've never trusted in Christ, as we stand and sing, we invite you to come and find security, rest, peace, hope in Christ.
• 19:55
Speaker 2: We'll be down here.
• 19:57
Speaker 2: We invite you to come forward.
• 19:58
Speaker 2: We would love to pray with you.
• 19:59
Speaker 2: There will be counselors who can take you out and share with you how you can trust Christ as your Savior.
• 20:04
Speaker 2: Or if you have, but you are overwhelmed in life this morning, we invite you to come.
• 20:10
Speaker 2: We would love to pray with you, but there's also these steps.
• 20:12
Speaker 2: We can make them altars, make the stage right here an altar.
• 20:16
Speaker 2: Or maybe you just need to come and you need to cry out to God and be reminded that nothing can take you out of His hand.
• 20:30
Speaker 2: If you're looking for a church, we would love to have you here, as together we seek to be more than conquerors, not because of how great our church is it's good but we're not more than conquerors because of anything our church does.
• 20:45
Speaker 2: We are more than conquerors because of what Christ has done and we invite you to come and unite with us as we strive to follow him.
• 20:53
Speaker 2: Whatever decision you have to make as we stand and sing in just a moment, we invite you to come forward.
• 21:00
Speaker 2: We would love to pray with you and walk with you together.
• 21:03
  Speaker 2: Let's pray, god.
• 21:06
  Speaker 2: We love you.
• 21:09
Speaker 2: We thank you for today and we thank you for your word.
• 21:13
Speaker 2: We thank you that in your word we find security, that nothing can separate us from you when we have trusted in you.
• 21:24
Speaker 2: I pray for those who are here this morning who have never trusted in you as their Savior.
• 21:31
Speaker 2: I pray that today will be the day of salvation for them.
• 21:33
Speaker 2: God, give them the faith that they need to respond to you.
• 21:37
Speaker 2: God, for those of us who are living in life and it is just overwhelming right now I pray that this moment, this time, will be a time where they remind themselves of the truth of the gospel that you are holding them and you will never, ever let them go.
• 21:54
Speaker 2: God, work right now, as only you can Give us the faith that we need to respond accordingly.
• 22:04
Speaker 2: Jesus, it's in your name we pray these things, amen.
