Transcript
- Lucas: Luna, welcome back to Learn Malay with Fexingo. Ready for another episode? Luna: Oh, absolutely! I've been practicing my market phrases from last time. Tomatoes, right? Lucas: Right, buying tomatoes at the market. Today we're going to buy something else: corn. Luna: Corn! I love corn. How do you say 'corn' in Malay? Lucas: Corn is 'jagung'. Say it with me: jagung. Luna: Jagung. Jagung. Lucas: Good. Now if you want to buy corn, you say: Saya mahu jagung. That means 'I want corn.' Try it. Luna: Saya mahu jagung. Lucas: Perfect. 'Saya mahu jagung.' So if you're at the market and you see a pile of corn, that's your phrase. Luna: Saya mahu jagung. Got it. Then the seller will ask how much? Or I can ask the price. Lucas: Exactly. To ask the price per kilo, you say: Berapa harga sekilo? Let's practice. Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Yes. That means 'How much per kilo?' You've used that before with other items. Luna: Right, same structure. So: Saya mahu jagung. Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Perfect. Now, sometimes you want to know if the corn is sweet. You can ask: Jagung ini manis? 'Is this corn sweet?' Manis means sweet. Luna: Jagung ini manis? Manis — that sounds like 'manis' in other contexts too. Lucas: Yes, like sweet desserts. So you point to the corn and ask, Jagung ini manis? Luna: Jagung ini manis? And hopefully the seller says yes. Lucas: Right. Now, corn is often sold by the ear, not just by kilo. The word for 'ear of corn' is 'tongkol'. So if you want two ears, you say: Saya mahu dua tongkol. Luna: Saya mahu dua tongkol. Two ears of corn. Lucas: Exactly. And you can also ask the seller to cut the corn for you: Boleh potong? 'Can you cut it?' Very useful. Luna: Boleh potong? Yeah, I remember 'boleh' from earlier episodes. So 'boleh potong' means 'can cut'. Lucas: Yes. So let's put it all together. Imagine you're at the market. You say: Saya mahu jagung. Berapa harga sekilo? Luna: Saya mahu jagung. Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Then maybe you ask about sweetness: Jagung ini manis? Then you decide: Saya mahu dua tongkol. And finally: Boleh potong? Luna: Let me try the whole thing. Saya mahu jagung. Berapa harga sekilo? Jagung ini manis? Saya mahu dua tongkol. Boleh potong? Lucas: That was excellent, Luna. You sounded like a pro. And the seller would be happy to help you. Luna: Aww, thanks. I feel like I could actually do this now. Corn on the cob is so good. Lucas: Totally. And you know, learning these phrases really helps when you're at the market. It makes the whole experience more fun. Luna: For sure. That means two ringgit per kilo. What do you say? Luna: Saya mahu dua tongkol. And then Boleh potong? Lucas: Yes. And maybe you want to ask if it's fresh: Jagung ini segar? Segar means fresh. Luna: Jagung ini segar? Oh, that's a good one. So I can check if it's fresh and sweet. Lucas: Exactly. Let's review all the new phrases one more time. First: Saya mahu jagung. Luna: Saya mahu jagung. Lucas: Berapa harga sekilo? Luna: Berapa harga sekilo? Lucas: Jagung ini manis? Luna: Jagung ini manis? Lucas: Saya mahu dua tongkol. Luna: Saya mahu dua tongkol. Lucas: Boleh potong? Luna: Boleh potong? Lucas: And a bonus: Jagung ini segar? Luna: Jagung ini segar? I love that. So next time I'm at the pasar, I'm ready for corn. Lucas: Yes, you are.
