- 0:14Speaker 1: help you become the millionaire dentists you deserve to be.
- 0:17Speaker 1: Please be advised we do speak with an honest tongue
- 0:19Speaker 1: and may not be safe for work.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Hello and welcome. This is Casey Hires back at the
- 0:26Speaker 2: Millionaire Donnist podcast in studio with co host Jared Bridgeman.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Casey, good morning, How are you today?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Thriving?
- 0:32Speaker 3: Thriving? You look great? Thanks, You've got a whole new
- 0:35Speaker 3: persona going on about you. You just came in today
- 0:38Speaker 3: looking fresh and ready to rock?
- 0:39Speaker 2: What does that mean?
- 0:43Speaker 3: Just so you folks that out there you can't see this, obviously,
- 0:46Speaker 3: Casey's kind of pulling a practical joke on his wife
- 0:48Speaker 3: and is pretending to grow mustache.
- 0:50Speaker 2: So I kind of forgot the shave for a couple
- 0:51Speaker 2: of days, and then I was off for a day.
- 0:53Speaker 2: I didn't shave, and my parents were over last night.
- 0:57Speaker 2: My wife comes in and looks at me and goes,
- 0:59Speaker 2: what is that? And I go, what do you mean?
- 1:03Speaker 2: She goes, are you growing a mustache. Yeah, And I'm
- 1:05Speaker 2: noticing how she was a little bit aggressive with that,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and I go, well, not really, but you know what,
- 1:14Speaker 2: I might grow a lip sweater. Now, I might get
- 1:16Speaker 2: some waxes and a comb and just really go for it,
- 1:19Speaker 2: like a you know, homage to Magnum p I this
- 1:21Speaker 2: is a Tom sellick.
- 1:22Speaker 3: You know, I got to say this is taking It's
- 1:25Speaker 3: a courage. It's a step of courage to, you know,
- 1:28Speaker 3: willingly grow something on your face when you never have before.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm pretty clean shaven, but I'm going to let
- 1:32Speaker 2: this ride for about three more days, that mustache ride,
- 1:36Speaker 2: and see I'm gonna let it ride and see how
- 1:38Speaker 2: many uh yeah, but eventually already dirty looks at you
- 1:42Speaker 2: from your wife. I don't think it's going to be
- 1:43Speaker 2: that great. Yeah, I don't think it's going to be
- 1:45Speaker 2: a thick, robust lip sweater. I think it's going to
- 1:48Speaker 2: look like I'm fourteen, you know, just hitting puberty and
- 1:50Speaker 2: there's some thick peach fuzz and you get some dirt
- 1:52Speaker 2: on your mouth. Yes, yes, or who knows, maybe next
- 1:55Speaker 2: week I'm just going to be.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Come rolling in with your little mustache comb and just I.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Don't know if I'm ready to be a mustache guy,
- 2:01Speaker 2: but we're gonna try. But it's mainly just to mess
- 2:03Speaker 2: with my wife at this point.
- 2:06Speaker 3: Well, what I love again, what I love about that
- 2:08Speaker 3: is is it's you know, last year I grew one
- 2:12Speaker 3: as a joke and then my wife actually liked it,
- 2:14Speaker 3: but I hated it. But it's it's you know, today
- 2:18Speaker 3: we wanted to talk about courage and taking having the
- 2:22Speaker 3: courage to take the next step or take the dive
- 2:24Speaker 3: you need to take.
- 2:25Speaker 2: And I'm having the courage to mess with my wife.
- 2:28Speaker 2: I might get in trouble.
- 2:29Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And so let's you know, you came up
- 2:33Speaker 3: with this kind of this title which I love, which is,
- 2:35Speaker 3: you know, jump in and jump in the pool, the
- 2:36Speaker 3: water's warm, jump in warm, right, that's right. And so
- 2:41Speaker 3: let's let's kind of break that down how that applies
- 2:44Speaker 3: to dentist Where what made you think of this idea
- 2:46Speaker 3: and how do we think it applies.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Well, think about maybe when you're a kid, maybe as
- 2:51Speaker 2: an adult, you go to a pool and you want
- 2:52Speaker 2: to get in, and you know that just jumping in
- 2:56Speaker 2: and again a nice clean pool that is in good shape,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and you know it's good, but there's still that like, ooh,
- 3:04Speaker 2: do I just kind of sort of jump in? You
- 3:05Speaker 2: want to put it off, but when you jump in,
- 3:08Speaker 2: it feels so good, and then when you get out,
- 3:10Speaker 2: you want to get in again.
- 3:10Speaker 3: It's awesome. I'm a creeper.
- 3:12Speaker 2: What does it mean?
- 3:13Speaker 3: It takes me about thirty minutes to get into a pool? Okay,
- 3:16Speaker 3: well one inch at a time.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Okay, A creeper getting into the pool, yes, also a
- 3:19Speaker 2: creeper in life.
- 3:20Speaker 3: Well, you know, and I got my little pencil mustache
- 3:23Speaker 3: and everything.
- 3:23Speaker 2: But ultimately, when you jump in your cannonball or go
- 3:26Speaker 2: off the diving board, it's exhilarating. It's fun. You're in
- 3:29Speaker 2: and you're like, oh my gosh, I wanted to just
- 3:31Speaker 2: jump in. Yeah, And there's a lot of crossover and
- 3:34Speaker 2: similarities with that mindset. We were just talking briefly, and
- 3:39Speaker 2: this is kind of random. We'll get in the dental
- 3:40Speaker 2: and a little bit. But you know, let's say, financially speaking,
- 3:44Speaker 2: it made sense for you to buy your dream house
- 3:46Speaker 2: at whatever dollar per number that is in twenty nineteen, yep,
- 3:49Speaker 2: interest sloads interest rates were under three percent.
- 3:53Speaker 3: They're pretty nice.
- 3:54Speaker 2: And let's say again, it was a good decision, but
- 3:57Speaker 2: you just couldn't quite do it, and so you didn't. Well,
- 3:59Speaker 2: now you look up four or five years later, interest
- 4:02Speaker 2: rates are more than doubled throughout seven. Is that cost
- 4:05Speaker 2: you a lot of money by not doing it? And
- 4:09Speaker 2: I think that we can just continue this analogy and
- 4:12Speaker 2: really get into some real robust conversation.
- 4:14Speaker 3: I think so too, you know, when we were talking,
- 4:16Speaker 3: I compared it too. So I'm a I'm a nerd,
- 4:18Speaker 3: you know, and I like to hold on you a creeper,
- 4:20Speaker 3: you a nerd usually one of the same. Not gonna lie,
- 4:23Speaker 3: but you know, I collect things because that's what I do.
- 4:26Speaker 3: I have comic books, I've got you know, Lego sets,
- 4:29Speaker 3: I records and why sorry, no, that's fine. I'm working
- 4:35Speaker 3: on four and five right now. And there are certain
- 4:38Speaker 3: things that I wish I had bought at the time,
- 4:41Speaker 3: and I was not worried about it, like especially with
- 4:43Speaker 3: some of the records I collect, and they've had since
- 4:46Speaker 3: then sold out and we're not going for hundreds of dollars,
- 4:48Speaker 3: you know, it's probably you know, pennies to you know,
- 4:52Speaker 3: in the thinking process compared to our house. But it's
- 4:55Speaker 3: still something I am mad at myself.
- 4:57Speaker 2: For not doing.
- 4:59Speaker 3: And so, what's a really great example of something where
- 5:03Speaker 3: a dentist, you know, had the opportunity in his practice
- 5:08Speaker 3: or her practice to take that diet, to take that jump,
- 5:12Speaker 3: and then did it.
- 5:12Speaker 2: That's a good question, and here's the assumption these examples.
- 5:15Speaker 2: We're talking about strategy analyzing. It's a good decision. Yet
- 5:21Speaker 2: sometimes you can delay it, put it off, or not
- 5:23Speaker 2: do it, like jumping in a pool. We talked about
- 5:26Speaker 2: learning a new procedure. Yeah, there's a lot of general
- 5:29Speaker 2: dentists out there where they've thought about it, but they
- 5:31Speaker 2: don't quite do it. Maybe some years pass and then
- 5:33Speaker 2: all of a sudden they go, you know what, I'm
- 5:34Speaker 2: going to go out the Scottsdale or somewhere. I'm going
- 5:36Speaker 2: to learn implants. I'm going to learn this procedure, that procedure.
- 5:39Speaker 2: They finally do it, they come back, they find out
- 5:42Speaker 2: they enjoy doing it right and it's profitable, and they
- 5:46Speaker 2: look back and go, oh, I wish i'd have done
- 5:47Speaker 2: that sooner.
- 5:48Speaker 3: Can you imagine that adding something to your job not
- 5:51Speaker 3: only do you really like doing, but also makes you
- 5:52Speaker 3: good money doing it. That's a win win.
- 5:55Speaker 2: But there's still courage, there's a leap of faith, right,
- 5:57Speaker 2: it's yep, Oh can I do this? Can I?
- 6:00Speaker 3: What if it doesn't work?
- 6:00Speaker 2: What if?
- 6:01Speaker 3: What if? What if? What if? That's that can paralyze
- 6:03Speaker 3: people that that decision process.
- 6:05Speaker 2: The boogieman. Yeah, does the boogieman exists? No, When you're
- 6:07Speaker 2: a kid, you think it's in the closet. You can
- 6:09Speaker 2: get your mind to a place where you think there's
- 6:10Speaker 2: a monster in your closet.
- 6:11Speaker 3: It turned out to be a polo close.
- 6:13Speaker 2: But you said, you can feel like if you jump
- 6:15Speaker 2: into the pool, you're gonna you know, vaporize, Like, Oh,
- 6:18Speaker 2: it's so scary. I don't know.
- 6:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, that's it's it's it's a crazy thing to
- 6:22Speaker 3: think about. And as I say, you know, hindsight is
- 6:24Speaker 3: twenty twenty. We were talking about for example, Uh, you know,
- 6:28Speaker 3: we're not really a company that promotes crypto currency all
- 6:32Speaker 3: that much. But could you imagine having gone back to
- 6:35Speaker 3: twenty ten and buying some bitcoin.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Yeah, if somebody said hey, you should buy this and
- 6:39Speaker 2: hear the reasons, Yeah, that's financially we're not promoting crypto.
- 6:44Speaker 3: I remember someone told me posting about it back then
- 6:47Speaker 3: and you should get into this, and I didn't because
- 6:49Speaker 3: I didn't know what I was doing or how to
- 6:50Speaker 3: do it, and so I.
- 6:51Speaker 2: Was like, Eh, put five hundred bucks in. You would
- 6:53Speaker 2: have had I don't know what you know, carry the
- 6:55Speaker 2: nine millions? I mean crazy. Now back to dentistry. Here's
- 6:59Speaker 2: another one, dropping an insurance. So many practice owners I
- 7:01Speaker 2: talk to who have a lot of insurances and they're
- 7:05Speaker 2: booked out, and there's all these other data and metrics
- 7:07Speaker 2: that point to something's wrong. The practice isn't running as well.
- 7:11Speaker 2: They know they should probably drop one or two, even
- 7:14Speaker 2: if they get strategy and advice and they know it's
- 7:16Speaker 2: the right decision. We've talked about this before. Dropping an
- 7:19Speaker 2: insurance can be scary. Why what if nobody likes me?
- 7:21Speaker 2: What if nobody comes Yeah, learning a new procedure, dropping insurance,
- 7:25Speaker 2: those are things that typically, when done right, they look
- 7:28Speaker 2: back and go, I should have done that, or I
- 7:30Speaker 2: should have done it sooner. That happens all the time.
- 7:33Speaker 3: I can see that one being a very scary one
- 7:35Speaker 3: in general, because that's potentially losing patients.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and I'll zoom out a little bit. The people
- 7:43Speaker 2: that get their financial house and order and their practice
- 7:45Speaker 2: running optimally. Sometimes when you're in your mid to late thirties.
- 7:51Speaker 2: They're like, yeah, I think I need help in this,
- 7:54Speaker 2: but I'm going to try it. And then we'll talk
- 7:55Speaker 2: to somebody that tried it for ten, fifteen, twenty, god
- 7:58Speaker 2: forbid a whole career going it alone. And we have
- 8:01Speaker 2: people they got some help on the back nine right
- 8:02Speaker 2: towards the end of their career, and they go, why
- 8:04Speaker 2: didn't I do this sooner? And they'll even give us
- 8:07Speaker 2: the answer. I didn't have the courage to make it change.
- 8:09Speaker 2: I didn't have the courage to address this elephant in
- 8:12Speaker 2: the room that I knew I needed help with. And
- 8:14Speaker 2: there's so many analogies that we've thought of, But like
- 8:17Speaker 2: we said, the assumption is research has been done and
- 8:21Speaker 2: it's a good decision, but you don't have the courage tog.
- 8:23Speaker 3: And you've looked at the pool. You can see it's clear,
- 8:26Speaker 3: it's clean, you know everything.
- 8:28Speaker 2: You know as people are in there having fun.
- 8:30Speaker 3: Yes, Now, let me ask you what happens in a
- 8:34Speaker 3: situation where someone might be over zealous or overconfident jumping
- 8:40Speaker 3: into the pool, Like for example, I kind of was
- 8:42Speaker 3: thinking either like they jump in and it's still sliming
- 8:44Speaker 3: green from being closed all winter or there's not having
- 8:47Speaker 3: anything water in there.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Yeah, you run in, you run through the gate to
- 8:52Speaker 2: whatever pool and you just do a cannonball and you're
- 8:54Speaker 2: in the air and you're like, oh no, there's no
- 8:55Speaker 2: water in It's extreme example, but you've got to have
- 8:58Speaker 2: some basic research. We talked about the line ready fire aim.
- 9:04Speaker 2: If you're talking about maybe going to a range or something,
- 9:07Speaker 2: typically you need to aim then fire. And that's when
- 9:09Speaker 2: we're point with research, because there are need jerk reactions
- 9:12Speaker 2: that practice owners make that they take a leap into
- 9:15Speaker 2: a pool with no water and they look back and go,
- 9:17Speaker 2: why did I do that? And so that's the other
- 9:20Speaker 2: side of the coin.
- 9:21Speaker 3: I feel like a really good example of that could
- 9:23Speaker 3: be is hiring an associates when it's not applicable for
- 9:29Speaker 3: what you're making in your time.
- 9:30Speaker 2: We see that a lot in chemistry. It's hiring the
- 9:33Speaker 2: associate hoping, which is a hope's terrible business strategy, hoping
- 9:38Speaker 2: that it's going to make things better, not really digging
- 9:41Speaker 2: in and making sure is this the right person, is
- 9:43Speaker 2: this the right relationship? Do they practice industry the same?
- 9:48Speaker 2: Let's look at numbers, let's go overhead, what's the structure
- 9:51Speaker 2: of the compensation, all those things done before getting associate.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Instead of I want one, I'm going to go hire one. Oh,
- 9:56Speaker 2: I have somebody that likes me and is interested. Let's
- 9:58Speaker 2: just try it.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Ask you how often have you heard a dentist or
- 10:04Speaker 3: a practice owner who hired and associated as in effect losing
- 10:07Speaker 3: money on set of associations.
- 10:09Speaker 2: I'd say there's two negatives. One eighty percent of associates
- 10:12Speaker 2: don't become partners and so it ends up being a
- 10:14Speaker 2: short term project. And then the other one is they're
- 10:18Speaker 2: overhead and cash flow weren't good to begin with. They
- 10:20Speaker 2: bring in somebody and it doesn't necessarily improve. You've added
- 10:24Speaker 2: some headaches. And that's one of those where again you're
- 10:27Speaker 2: you're over zealous jumping into a pool that you haven't
- 10:30Speaker 2: done the research with. Another one we come across, which
- 10:34Speaker 2: again is a bad example of taking a leap without
- 10:38Speaker 2: proper data. Well, I'm going to open a second location,
- 10:40Speaker 2: I'm going to open up a third location. I'm going
- 10:42Speaker 2: to create a mini DS. So like it sounds great,
- 10:45Speaker 2: going to a nice pool sounds great, but you have
- 10:48Speaker 2: to have your sit together before doing that, or you're
- 10:53Speaker 2: taking a leap that you shouldn't take or I built three.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Pools in my yard. Now I've got three to take
- 10:57Speaker 3: care of.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Three practices, three pools. I
- 10:59Speaker 2: see which there.
- 11:01Speaker 3: And and that one can be really hard on your
- 11:04Speaker 3: long term plans, even if you even have one of
- 11:08Speaker 3: your money, your cash flow, your retirement, staffing, all kinds
- 11:13Speaker 3: of things. And as we talked before in several other
- 11:15Speaker 3: podcasts that when you if you have some core issues
- 11:18Speaker 3: with your your original business, that it's going to not
- 11:23Speaker 3: going to fix itself, it's going to multiply as you
- 11:25Speaker 3: spread out.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Yeah, your problems are only going to get worse or
- 11:28Speaker 2: get magnified. But you know, back to taking the leap
- 11:32Speaker 2: of faith. Right for what we see practice owners who
- 11:36Speaker 2: any of these examples learning procedure, drop an insurance, or
- 11:42Speaker 2: get the right team to help you master the business
- 11:45Speaker 2: and financial side. Normally, when they take that leap of
- 11:48Speaker 2: faith and the timing is right and data backs it up,
- 11:52Speaker 2: there's still that feeling of hope. The water might be cold. Right,
- 11:56Speaker 2: this is scary. I'm want to spend ten more years
- 12:00Speaker 2: to use your word, creeping into the pool, finally getting
- 12:03Speaker 2: in going oh this was great. It would have probably
- 12:05Speaker 2: been better to have just jumped in.
- 12:08Speaker 3: I could have had more fun for the last hour.
- 12:09Speaker 2: Firstus when you're on the diving board and you're like,
- 12:12Speaker 2: oh my gosh, oh my gosh, all these people are
- 12:14Speaker 2: having fun. The pool looks crystal clean. But I don't
- 12:17Speaker 2: know that I can do it, dude.
- 12:18Speaker 3: I'm telling you right now. I creep in and my
- 12:20Speaker 3: kids jump right in, and then they try to splash me,
- 12:22Speaker 3: and I have to get mad at them. I'm like,
- 12:24Speaker 3: stop splashing me. I'll get in on my own time.
- 12:26Speaker 3: You need more courage. I do need more courage.
- 12:28Speaker 2: You got to take that leap. But in all seriousness,
- 12:33Speaker 2: and these examples that we're touching on, they can all
- 12:36Speaker 2: be scary, you know, learning a new procedure, dropping an insurance,
- 12:40Speaker 2: or finally getting your financial house in order again. So
- 12:43Speaker 2: many practice owners they don't fully know basic numbers and
- 12:48Speaker 2: complex numbers. They don't know why their tax situation is
- 12:51Speaker 2: always being extended, or they're getting a huge refund or
- 12:53Speaker 2: a significant additional tax bill that they don't know.
- 12:57Speaker 3: There's taking out the face value hoping maybe next year
- 13:01Speaker 3: won't be as bad.
- 13:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I feel like I should make more, but I
- 13:03Speaker 2: don't know. Well, Again, as these start to add up,
- 13:07Speaker 2: there's your signe keep down in your bit of your stomach.
- 13:11Speaker 2: You probably know you should get this in order, but
- 13:14Speaker 2: you're an achiever. You should be able to figure it out.
- 13:18Speaker 3: But that's not always the case. You know, everybody needs
- 13:22Speaker 3: help with some things somewhare.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean if my two thirds, I'm not going
- 13:26Speaker 2: to take a leap of faith and start poking around.
- 13:28Speaker 2: I'm going to call the experts to fix it. And
- 13:32Speaker 2: hopefully if you have twenty new patients a month, that's
- 13:35Speaker 2: what those patients are saying, Hey, I need this fixed.
- 13:38Speaker 3: Your cat doesn't fix itself.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And then as a dentist you're able to use your
- 13:42Speaker 2: expertise to solve the problem. So many parallels there with
- 13:46Speaker 2: our firm and people we've helped. And I wish I
- 13:48Speaker 2: would have done this sooner. Why didn't I do this sooner?
- 13:50Speaker 3: Again, it comes down to having the information and the
- 13:53Speaker 3: information and the data points to yes, this is the time,
- 13:56Speaker 3: and yes this is a good idea.
- 13:58Speaker 2: And again, some people need to sit on the sideline,
- 14:00Speaker 2: sit on the side of the pool and watch everybody
- 14:02Speaker 2: having a ton of fun and baking in the heat.
- 14:04Speaker 2: To get uncomfortable where you finally go oh, I've got
- 14:06Speaker 2: to get in, and it's typically the same. I should
- 14:09Speaker 2: have done that sooner. This feels great, I'm having fun
- 14:12Speaker 2: in the pool. It's not as bad as I thought.
- 14:14Speaker 2: But leaps of faith are hard, courage is hard. Yep,
- 14:19Speaker 2: But there's so many parallels that I thought would be
- 14:21Speaker 2: interesting to talk about with dentistry and ultimately when we
- 14:24Speaker 2: present CE around the country, there's many people we never talk,
- 14:28Speaker 2: you know, never see after that evening, and we share
- 14:30Speaker 2: so much with them, but we encourage them. Do not settle,
- 14:34Speaker 2: Do not accept a lower standard of care for those
- 14:36Speaker 2: doing your external functions, accounting, financial planning, investing, advising practice, advisory,
- 14:41Speaker 2: mediocrit don't settle for it. Demand more from who you're
- 14:45Speaker 2: working with. Again, that takes courage, That takes a leap,
- 14:48Speaker 2: and it comes back to what just jump in.
- 14:50Speaker 3: Just jump in.
- 14:51Speaker 2: The water's warm, it's so warm, Casey, Thank you so much.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Listen, folks out there speaking of when we go out
- 14:57Speaker 3: there and we speak and we never may may or
