- 0:00What if the peace you're searching for in your family
- 0:04begins the moment you stop trying to fix them?
- 0:09Hello, beautiful souls. Welcome to my 140 and sixth solo
- 0:17episode. This is Esther speaking to you
- 0:21from Switzerland with an open heart today.
- 0:26And I want to be honest, right from the first breath of this
- 0:31episode, I'm sad. It has been one year since my
- 0:38mom passed away. One year.
- 0:42And even saying this out loud still feels surreal because part
- 0:50of me knows she is at peace and another part of me still wants
- 0:58to talk to her or ask her something.
- 1:03My mom left this world in a very quiet way.
- 1:08She stayed in bed, which strangely enough was something
- 1:14she had always wished for but never allowed herself to do
- 1:20while she was alive. And in the end, she finally did.
- 1:27There is peace in knowing she chose her moment.
- 1:32And yet grief has its own rhythm.
- 1:37It comes like waves, sometimes gentle, sometimes overwhelming.
- 1:45And grief doesn't only take the person who leaves, it also
- 1:51reshapes the relationships that remain.
- 1:56Because now there is still my father.
- 2:01And this past year with him has been one of the most emotionally
- 2:07challenging seasons of my life. I had imagined something
- 2:13different. I thought we would sit together,
- 2:18talk about memories, laugh about the past, share gratitude for
- 2:25everything we experienced as a family.
- 2:29I thought his wife's passing would open his heart, but
- 2:35instead it often closed it. He accused me many times of not
- 2:43being kind enough, of not loving enough, of not showing up the
- 2:49way he wished I would. And I know part of this comes
- 2:58from his inability to grieve. Part of it comes from his old
- 3:04wounds, from a lifetime of not feeling loved, from emotional
- 3:11places inside him that's never grew up.
- 3:16Sometimes it feels like speaking to an 8 year old boy who takes
- 3:23everything personally, who feels rejected even when he's loved.
- 3:30And I'll be honest with you, there were moments I felt fed up
- 3:37with his story. Not because I don't love him,
- 3:42but because love also gets tired when it keeps knocking on a
- 3:48closed door. Just yesterday when I called
- 3:53him, he sounded hopefully distant cold.
- 4:00And I thought to myself, how many times have I told you that
- 4:06I love you and you still can't receive it?
- 4:12And this is where one of the deepest lessons of my life
- 4:18landed again with full force. We cannot control other people's
- 4:25moods. We cannot heal people who don't
- 4:29want to heal. We cannot change people who
- 4:34don't choose change. We can only be present.
- 4:40And sometimes even presence is not received.
- 4:46And life gave me the chance to practice this lesson again
- 4:52through my younger son, who is currently in military service.
- 4:58But he comes home on weekends, and this past weekend I felt he
- 5:05was in a low state. Heavy energy, short answers,
- 5:11rough tone. I asked him gently what was
- 5:16going on. He said nothing.
- 5:20Everything is fine and I knew he wasn't even aware of his own
- 5:27state. The old me would have reacted
- 5:32differently. I would have argued.
- 5:35I would have pointed out his tone, I would have tried to make
- 5:41him see what I was feeling. But this time, something inside
- 5:47me stayed. Stayed grounded.
- 5:50Every time he responded unkindly, I went back to my
- 5:56happy place, to my inner peace, and I told myself it's not about
- 6:04me, it's his business. I don't have to change him, let
- 6:10him be. And this is freedom.
- 6:15The freedom of not taking everything personally, the
- 6:20freedom of not making someone else mood your emotional
- 6:26responsibility. And this is one of the most
- 6:31important things I have learned in the past years.
- 6:37I don't have to repeat the same story with my sons that I lived
- 6:43with my parents because when I was younger, my parents often
- 6:49accused me of not being kind enough, of being ungrateful, of
- 6:55not loving them the way they deserved.
- 7:00They didn't understand boundaries.
- 7:03They didn't understand that poverty, adulthood, is the face
- 7:10where you find yourself, not where you keep pleasing your
- 7:15parents. And today I see they carried
- 7:21their own wounds from their parents, generational patterns
- 7:28passed down unconsciously. But here is my decision.
- 7:34I am determined to break this pattern.
- 7:39And one teaching helped me profoundly in this journey.
- 7:45A teaching from my mentor, Tony Robbins.
- 7:50Trade your expectations for appreciation.
- 7:56Let this sink in for a moment. Because expectations are silent
- 8:03contracts we place on others without their consent.
- 8:09We feel entitled. As parents, as partners, as
- 8:15children, we expect certain behaviours, certain words,
- 8:22certain emotional responses and when they don't come, we feel
- 8:28hurt, rejected, angry. So the first step is awareness.
- 8:36Acknowledge this feeling I have right now comes from an
- 8:42expectation. And your feeling is valid, it is
- 8:47real, it moves something inside you.
- 8:52You are allowed to feel it fully.
- 8:56But then comes the next step, and this step changes
- 9:02everything. Realize that expectations are a
- 9:07dead end in relationships. They close hearts instead of
- 9:13opening them. So you consciously shift your
- 9:18focus. You start searching for what you
- 9:21can appreciate in this person. You flip the lens.
- 9:26You step away from your ego, away from hurt, and you put on a
- 9:33new pair of glasses where you see this person as a human
- 9:38being, a soul alive. You have the privilege to love
- 9:46because love is a privilege, not an entitlement.
- 9:52A privilege that this person walks life beside you, even if
- 9:59imperfectly. And when you shift from
- 10:03expectation to appreciation, you enter a completely different
- 10:10emotional universe. You experience the same person
- 10:15in a totally different way. Do you feel the difference
- 10:22coming back to my father and my younger son?
- 10:26I love my father deeply. I'm proud of everything he did
- 10:32for our family. I appreciate him.
- 10:35But appreciation does not mean acceptance of unkind treatment.
- 10:43I have the right to set boundaries, to protect my
- 10:48emotional state, to protect my inner peace.
- 10:54And I admit, setting boundaries has not been easy for me.
- 11:00I often had the bad conscience. I felt guilty.
- 11:06But I'm learning growing step by step, and this awareness is the
- 11:15only way I can prevent repeating this story with my sons.
- 11:21Because whenever I feel anger rising because one of them
- 11:28didn't meet my expectations, I remind myself I don't want to
- 11:35become my parents in this moment.
- 11:39Not because they were bad, but because they were unconscious in
- 11:45their patterns. And I choose consciousness.
- 11:51I choose healing or repeating. And before I close today, I want
- 11:59to leave you with one last truth that feels very alive in my
- 12:05heart. It's never too late to start
- 12:09from scratch. Never.
- 12:12If you reacted from all wounds, if you fell back into all
- 12:18patterns, forgive yourself. You're human, you're learning.
- 12:25You are allowed to make mistakes.
- 12:29Growth is not perfection, it is awareness in motion.
- 12:36And the next time a similar moment appears, pause, breathe,
- 12:43release expectation, and ask yourself, how can I appreciate
- 12:50this person right now? Even one small appreciation can
- 12:56reopen a closed heart, including your own.
- 13:02Thank you for being here with me today in this very honest space.
