- 5:00Speaker 1: I am judging you hard. I'm judging you harder than

- 5:05Speaker 2: It's it's too quiet because I'm like, she's me out
- 5:12Speaker 2: on screamed, but it's too quiet. So I'm like, where's

- 5:16Speaker 1: It would have been so much more hilarious. Is she
- 5:19Speaker 1: just there just trying at you?
- 5:21Speaker 2: Yeah, she was like right there, just judging me. I'm like,
- 5:25Speaker 2: mind your own business. You three like a helfer guy.
- 5:28Speaker 2: So what can we talk about today?
- 5:30Speaker 1: Y'all?
- 5:31Speaker 2: Let me talk about some books.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Today is just gonna be a nice, cozy episode. You know.
- 5:36Speaker 1: Here in San Antonio, Texas, it's actually really it's actually
- 5:40Speaker 1: hold as fuck over here.
- 5:42Speaker 2: It's nice. It's nice.
- 5:43Speaker 1: It's nice. It's nice. It's nice for Prie from all
- 5:46Speaker 1: the hot weather we usually get but forty degrees in
- 5:50Speaker 1: San Antonio, forty one degrees in San Antonio, so it's chili,
- 5:54Speaker 1: all right. I got my hoodie on.
- 5:56Speaker 2: I have put my hoodie on that course when you
- 5:59Speaker 2: walk outside, when I walk outside, and my and my
- 6:01Speaker 2: nips get that's when you know this is good weather.
- 6:05Speaker 2: It's sweat a weather, sweat a weather, Oh my.
- 6:08Speaker 1: God, sweat weather.
- 6:09Speaker 2: So what other.
- 6:13Speaker 1: So if you're so, if you're currently in a part
- 6:16Speaker 1: of the of the States or wherever you or wherever
- 6:18Speaker 1: in the world you are, and it's currently cold, you know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: put on your sweater. Sit back, relax. We're gonna be
- 6:22Speaker 1: talking about a nice cozy little book called this spell Shop.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Drink some hot coco sitting in front of the fire.
- 6:29Speaker 2: This is one of those books, mhm.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Spell The spell Shop is a nice cozy little literary RP,
- 6:36Speaker 1: literary RPG style book as uh, you know, it has
- 6:42Speaker 1: aspects of fromantasy that RPG. It's very PG, I will
- 6:49Speaker 1: say that. So there's not any like hardcore violence or
- 6:55Speaker 1: action that typic that are typically in the books that
- 6:58Speaker 1: I've read so far, and so it was a nice
- 7:02Speaker 1: little step back. I don't think I've read a book
- 7:04Speaker 1: this cozy since I've read The House in the Cerulian
- 7:09Speaker 1: c Yeah, and that one was a cozy, nice, very
- 7:14Speaker 1: nice and cozy book. So this one is kind of
- 7:17Speaker 1: is kind of all the same levels that except this
- 7:20Speaker 1: is just I hate to say it, it's straight romantic.
- 7:25Speaker 2: I mean, we love a stan here. I've talked about
- 7:28Speaker 2: strict romanticy here plenty of times.
- 7:31Speaker 3: M hmm.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Yeah. But I've left straight romances like romance and like
- 7:36Speaker 1: like the straight category behind because I got tired of it,
- 7:40Speaker 1: and I mainly I mainly stick with like the with
- 7:43Speaker 1: the lgbt qes because that's where I that's where I live.
- 7:49Speaker 1: You can find me in the lgbt Q section. All right,
- 7:53Speaker 1: they got no I got no shame. Although there is
- 7:55Speaker 1: some lgbt Q representation in here, there are some all
- 7:58Speaker 1: characters that in this novel that are definitely a gay,
- 8:04Speaker 1: So a nice little bit of representation here. So spell
- 8:08Speaker 1: Shop is written by Sarah Beth Durst. All Right, this
- 8:11Speaker 1: is a This book was released in two thousand and four,
- 8:14Speaker 1: two thousand and four, twenty twenty four. God, no, would
- 8:18Speaker 1: not have this would not have sold in two thousand and.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Four, probably not, probably not, probably not.
- 8:24Speaker 1: We have this gay representation.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:31Speaker 1: So anyway, so the spell Shop it does start off
- 8:34Speaker 1: a bit dramatic because the story follows a young woman
- 8:38Speaker 1: named Quila. Quila was a librarian in an imperial library
- 8:45Speaker 1: in the Great Library of Elysium. Elysium is this is
- 8:50Speaker 1: the capital of this widespread empire. It takes so the
- 8:54Speaker 1: settings take place in this large archipelago type world, all right.
- 9:00Speaker 1: So the empire controls dozens, if not hundreds, of these
- 9:04Speaker 1: islands all across this expansive ocean, and Elysium is like
- 9:11Speaker 1: somewhere Elysium itself, the capital is somewhere in the center.
- 9:14Speaker 1: It's very urban, there's magic, there's widespread development. And she's
- 9:20Speaker 1: one of the few fortunate people to actually work in
- 9:23Speaker 1: the Great Library itself. Kila is the textbook definition of
- 9:29Speaker 1: an introvert and a book and a bookworm. She loves books,
- 9:33Speaker 1: but she hates human interaction. She doesn't really she doesn't
- 9:37Speaker 1: particularly enjoy interacting with other people. And for her, the
- 9:44Speaker 1: for her, the library was the perfect job. And when
- 9:47Speaker 1: she finally when she had gotten her position at the library,
- 9:51Speaker 1: she was fortunate enough to be assigned to the actual
- 9:55Speaker 1: spell the actual spell sections, the spell books all right now,
- 10:00Speaker 1: the section that deals with the spell books in grimoires.
- 10:03Speaker 1: It's very it's a very large section. And there's different
- 10:07Speaker 1: floors within the Great Library where you can find all
- 10:10Speaker 1: the spell books. And she's and she has an entire
- 10:13Speaker 1: section of spell books all to herself, so she spent
- 10:16Speaker 1: the better part of a decade UH categorize, like, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: taking care of these books, categorizing them, delivering them to
- 10:23Speaker 1: uh imperial like to royals and imperials, because I think
- 10:27Speaker 1: unfortunately the Great Library is UH is a private library.
- 10:32Speaker 1: It's not open to the public, so the only people
- 10:35Speaker 1: who have access to the library are members of the
- 10:38Speaker 1: Imperial Court themselves as well as any like rich nobles
- 10:41Speaker 1: or anybody who's wealthy enough to pay the premium fee
- 10:44Speaker 1: to be able to access the library. And I'm gonna
- 10:49Speaker 1: be honest, like it in these kind of like settings
- 10:53Speaker 1: make me sad because you know, the fact that not
- 10:55Speaker 1: that you can't know that knowledge like this is consolidated,
- 10:59Speaker 1: but with held from the public. It's to me that's
- 11:02Speaker 1: a sign that like your society is the beginning to decline,
- 11:05Speaker 1: because if your leadership is denying you access to knowledge
- 11:10Speaker 1: like this, then they're not good leaders.
- 11:14Speaker 3: You know, they're greedy fish.
- 11:15Speaker 1: And that's pretty much what the Emperor of Elysium was
- 11:18Speaker 1: was a greedy, selfish bastard. And later on we're gonna
- 11:21Speaker 1: see like like far beyond like what he had done.
- 11:26Speaker 1: We're going to see like how his decisions have affected
- 11:29Speaker 1: people living in the most outermost islands of the Empire.
- 11:34Speaker 1: So the book starts off with Kila categorizing and restalking
- 11:41Speaker 1: the shelves of her spell sections, and she's assisted by
- 11:46Speaker 1: her she's actually assisted by a sensient spider plant, so
- 11:52Speaker 1: she has a little companion. He's a spider plant. If
- 11:55Speaker 1: you don't know what a spider plant looks like, just
- 11:57Speaker 1: google it. They basically you ever see any house like
- 12:00Speaker 1: generic houseplant, ever, that's what he is. And so Kaz
- 12:06Speaker 1: was the So the spider plant is named cause he
- 12:09Speaker 1: can actually speak and he can move around on his own.
- 12:12Speaker 1: It's kind of funny because he uses his leaves to
- 12:15Speaker 1: like walk around and like climb up shelves and move
- 12:18Speaker 1: books and like stock books for her, and it's kind
- 12:22Speaker 1: of yeah, it's pretty cute because his roots like hold
- 12:24Speaker 1: onto a little ball of soil to like keep them alive.
- 12:27Speaker 2: You know, Oh my god, that's adorable.
- 12:31Speaker 1: And he's pretty caddy too, So he's like so he's
- 12:34Speaker 1: very intelligent, very well, very well read, but also pretty caddy.
- 12:39Speaker 1: And he's also very neurotic and has a lot of
- 12:43Speaker 1: nervous energy, so he will often like get he'll often
- 12:49Speaker 1: like hyper fixate on certain things that make him nervous,
- 12:53Speaker 1: like mainly especially with plant eating animals and things like
- 12:57Speaker 1: fire and water. Like, he doesn't he goes outside because
- 13:01Speaker 1: he's afraid of encountering some like something that eat plants.
- 13:08Speaker 1: So so the two of them have spent the two
- 13:10Speaker 1: of them have spent years working in the library. Cas
- 13:13Speaker 1: himself was originally just a normal houseplant that was accidentally
- 13:17Speaker 1: brought to life by a by a spell and things.
- 13:22Speaker 1: The problem is is that only licensed sorcerers are allowed
- 13:26Speaker 1: to use magic, and if you are caught using magic,
- 13:30Speaker 1: even like head, even like just like just a little
- 13:33Speaker 1: spell here and there, that has a lot of legal repercussions.
- 13:38Speaker 1: There was a time in the story where everyone was
- 13:41Speaker 1: free to use magic how they pleased. But then the
- 13:44Speaker 1: Emperor began to become more and more paranoid, more possessive
- 13:48Speaker 1: of magic, and started imposing rules and laws that limited
- 13:52Speaker 1: the use of spells to specific sorcerers, like you had
- 13:56Speaker 1: to have certifications, you have to write approval, all right,
- 14:00Speaker 1: couldn't just do hedge magic anymore. Yeah, And it made
- 14:04Speaker 1: lives for people so much harder, so much Harsher Kaz
- 14:08Speaker 1: was a result of an It was more of an
- 14:10Speaker 1: accident really, when he was brought to life. One of
- 14:13Speaker 1: the other librarians in the library was playing around with
- 14:16Speaker 1: a spell and brought him back to and brought him
- 14:18Speaker 1: to life, and she was arrested. This librarian was arrested
- 14:24Speaker 1: and as punishment, she was turned into a wooden statue.
- 14:33Speaker 1: So the punishments can be pretty harsh. The punishments for
- 14:36Speaker 1: breaking the laws, especially around magic, is pretty harsh in
- 14:38Speaker 1: this world. Keila herself had she's more interested in just
- 14:44Speaker 1: studying it, the more theory, the theoretical behind like magic.
- 14:48Speaker 1: She doesn't really she's never actually used magic herself and
- 14:52Speaker 1: personally she's never really wanted to because she doesn't want to,
- 14:55Speaker 1: of course, jeopardize her position within the within the library, yeah,
- 15:02Speaker 1: or incur the wrath of the Imperial Inquisition, of course.
- 15:08Speaker 1: So when this when the story starts, it's Kila and
- 15:12Speaker 1: Kaz that both the two of them are working in
- 15:14Speaker 1: this are working in the in the library. Keila was
- 15:17Speaker 1: busy categorizing some books when Kaz comes running into her
- 15:23Speaker 1: section and warns her that the revolution had that that
- 15:31Speaker 1: revolution has reached Elysium and they're burning the library to
- 15:34Speaker 1: the ground. So this is like, this is a little
- 15:38Speaker 1: something that this is kind of sad about Quila is
- 15:40Speaker 1: because she's because of how much of a shut in
- 15:42Speaker 1: she was. She didn't really make friends even with the
- 15:46Speaker 1: other librarians, and she would rarely interact with other librarians
- 15:49Speaker 1: unless she absolutely had to andy and prefer to spend
- 15:53Speaker 1: most of her time just in her section, like she
- 15:56Speaker 1: lived in the library, like they gave her like a
- 15:58Speaker 1: little dormit. She lives in the dormitory the library, and
- 16:01Speaker 1: but most of the time she's she's always in her
- 16:05Speaker 1: in her section of the library, and she performs her
- 16:08Speaker 1: duties and only ever interacts with other people when she
- 16:12Speaker 1: needed to. Yeah, and later on she does feel she
- 16:16Speaker 1: she gets hit with this like sort of this reality check,
- 16:20Speaker 1: like nobody cared to even bother warning me that like
- 16:24Speaker 1: warning her that the revolution had reached the city, like
- 16:28Speaker 1: she was, like, the library was big, so when you're
- 16:30Speaker 1: inside the library, it's very like you feel very isolated
- 16:34Speaker 1: from the outside world. So she had done a really
- 16:36Speaker 1: good job of isolating herself, so so much so that
- 16:39Speaker 1: she while she heard whispers and rumors of the revolution
- 16:42Speaker 1: that have been overtaking Elysium she didn't think that. She
- 16:46Speaker 1: didn't think or really know that it would hit like
- 16:48Speaker 1: so close to home, so close to the capitol. And
- 16:51Speaker 1: it was only until the very last moment when kaz
- 16:54Speaker 1: happened to see that the revolutions have already broken into
- 16:57Speaker 1: the library and they've burned down and there's and began
- 17:00Speaker 1: burning down parts of it, that he was able to
- 17:03Speaker 1: come and warn her. So the thing is that Kila did,
- 17:07Speaker 1: at the at the very least have the foresight too
- 17:10Speaker 1: began prepping just in case. So she began, uh, she
- 17:15Speaker 1: began storing several crates of very important like texts and
- 17:20Speaker 1: UH and spell books and storing them away in like
- 17:24Speaker 1: a little in one of the libraries, uh, like delivery boats.
- 17:29Speaker 1: Because the thing is to think of Elysium as like
- 17:35Speaker 1: kind of like Venice, except it's not a city that's
- 17:40Speaker 1: built on the stilts over the water. It's uh, it's
- 17:45Speaker 1: it's a city. It's on it's an island city. It
- 17:48Speaker 1: has canals running all throughout the island, and many of
- 17:52Speaker 1: the many of the times whenever a librarian has to
- 17:55Speaker 1: deliver books, it's often to other islands across Elysium. So
- 17:59Speaker 1: at least is the center city, and then there's the
- 18:01Speaker 1: empire and the book and the story refers to like
- 18:04Speaker 1: the other islands is just part of the empire without
- 18:07Speaker 1: really like talking about like the actual name of the
- 18:10Speaker 1: empire is just referred to as the empire. And oftentimes
- 18:15Speaker 1: she will make deliveries on her boat so these other
- 18:18Speaker 1: islands to take, like to take to deliver spell books
- 18:21Speaker 1: to some of the two other library members. And she
- 18:25Speaker 1: she had already begun packing away several like several boxes
- 18:29Speaker 1: full of important spell books. And when has warned her
- 18:33Speaker 1: of this of the oncoming fire and the revolutionaries, she
- 18:37Speaker 1: quickly packed as many of the books she could in
- 18:40Speaker 1: one last box and carried it down to the down
- 18:44Speaker 1: to her boat. They which was which already had four
- 18:47Speaker 1: other crate which already had like four other crates of
- 18:51Speaker 1: of books. And the one that she brought was the
- 18:54Speaker 1: fifth crate, but she had only had enough time to
- 18:56Speaker 1: fill it about halfway, so we got about four and
- 18:58Speaker 1: a half, like almost five crates filled with precious books,
- 19:03Speaker 1: and she had some she managed to pack away some
- 19:05Speaker 1: of her own supplies, and the two of them cast
- 19:08Speaker 1: off and began sailing away from Elicium. As they're sailing
- 19:13Speaker 1: down the canals, they can see that the revolutionaries have
- 19:16Speaker 1: burnt most of the city, have already set fire to
- 19:19Speaker 1: most of the city. They've stormed the capital. They've already
- 19:23Speaker 1: begun storming the capitol. And when looking back, she could
- 19:25Speaker 1: see that the library was beginning to burn. And it
- 19:29Speaker 1: was a very shocking experience for her, and she wasn't
- 19:33Speaker 1: sure what she would she at first, she wasn't sure
- 19:35Speaker 1: what she was going to do, but she knew that
- 19:38Speaker 1: they had to at the very least get these books
- 19:41Speaker 1: to safety, because her first priority was protecting her charges
- 19:45Speaker 1: and figuring out what she's going to do with herself,
- 19:48Speaker 1: because she wasn't sure if the revolutionaries were going to kill,
- 19:52Speaker 1: were just killing indiscriminately, or if they even succeeded. She
- 19:57Speaker 1: didn't really care. She didn't what I want to She
- 20:00Speaker 1: didn't really care to know if she was more focused on,
- 20:02Speaker 1: like you know, protecting of getting away. As a still
- 20:06Speaker 1: further away from the city, she's their face. She and
- 20:09Speaker 1: kas her face like where to now? And she decides
- 20:16Speaker 1: that the best place to go would be as far
- 20:19Speaker 1: to the farthest reaches of the empire. Uh And just
- 20:22Speaker 1: so happens, her childhood home was an island on the
- 20:27Speaker 1: very out on the very outskirts of the Empire. This
- 20:30Speaker 1: island is called Coultree. Coultree is a very remote island
- 20:37Speaker 1: at the very far, like as far out into the
- 20:40Speaker 1: sea from like the from the center, from the capital
- 20:44Speaker 1: as possible. All Right, She and her family, she grew
- 20:47Speaker 1: up there and then like when she was still a
- 20:49Speaker 1: little girl, her family had had packed up and moved
- 20:52Speaker 1: to the city for a chance at a better a
- 20:55Speaker 1: better life.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 1: So a little backstory about Kila is that she's from,
- 21:01Speaker 1: like I said, she's from Coultree, and she remembers she
- 21:04Speaker 1: remembered Coultree as a very cozy, kind of very picturesque
- 21:09Speaker 1: type of island. It was, you know, it was a
- 21:11Speaker 1: farming It was a farming and fishing, uh, it was.
- 21:15Speaker 1: It had a farming and fishing community. Mainly the farming
- 21:19Speaker 1: exports was like apple orchards and other and other like
- 21:24Speaker 1: types of fruit. And also they were known for their
- 21:28Speaker 1: herds of muorrhorses or hippocampus, So they had shepherds that
- 21:34Speaker 1: would they had shepherds that would care for the sea
- 21:37Speaker 1: for the murr horses. They had a large fishing community
- 21:40Speaker 1: like the muurr horses were integral for UH. They use
- 21:44Speaker 1: the mr horses to help them like UH basically also
- 21:49Speaker 1: heard schools of fishes closer to the island for the
- 21:52Speaker 1: fishermen to be able to catch and there was also
- 21:55Speaker 1: a big a large community of murfolk that lived around
- 21:58Speaker 1: in the waters around the islands. The coves in the
- 22:00Speaker 1: island were often used by the Murph folks to raise
- 22:03Speaker 1: their children and ah for Quila. For Kila, this was
- 22:11Speaker 1: a this would be a perfect a perfect you know,
- 22:14Speaker 1: new start in her life. It's far, it's far, it's remote,
- 22:18Speaker 1: and while people there would wouldn't really know would probably
- 22:23Speaker 1: remember her, they wouldn't really know her or and she
- 22:25Speaker 1: hoped they wouldn't really bother her, so she didn't cause
- 22:28Speaker 1: set sail to Coultree mm hm and she also fortunately
- 22:36Speaker 1: for her after her parents' death, their old family cottage
- 22:40Speaker 1: is now hers, so she does have a home that
- 22:42Speaker 1: she can go to and possibly start over. They do
- 22:45Speaker 1: eventually reach Coultree, they land her family also had a
- 22:48Speaker 1: little private cove, so she was able to sail into
- 22:52Speaker 1: the cove uh and begin and go up to the cottage.
- 22:56Speaker 1: When she sees the cottage like by the time she
- 22:57Speaker 1: reached the cottage. It was pretty late in the evening.
- 23:01Speaker 1: It was dark. She had a heart. It was hard
- 23:03Speaker 1: to see everything that was see everything, but from what
- 23:06Speaker 1: she can see in the in the late evening light,
- 23:09Speaker 1: was the cottage completely overgrown by vines and plants like
- 23:14Speaker 1: it's deaf. It's it's had the look of being in
- 23:17Speaker 1: complete disarray for well over for almost twenty years. But
- 23:23Speaker 1: Tom was still standing and she knew that for now
- 23:28Speaker 1: it would have to do. And they began cleaning up
- 23:30Speaker 1: the place. So she settled into She settles into her cottage,
- 23:34Speaker 1: and the next morning, when she wakes up, she meets
- 23:43Speaker 1: she actually that she meets her neighbor, Lauren Lauren. The
- 23:47Speaker 1: way she meets Lauren was kind of was kind of
- 23:50Speaker 1: unexpected because see, the thing is is Lauren had seen
- 23:54Speaker 1: her boat, saw her boat in the cove, and also
- 23:58Speaker 1: noticed that someone had clear some some whatt of a
- 24:01Speaker 1: path to the cottage. So he went up to investigate,
- 24:04Speaker 1: just being a good neighbor because he remembered Laren remembered
- 24:08Speaker 1: who the cottage belonged to, and he wasn't sure somebody
- 24:10Speaker 1: had broken in, so he ends up. So he goes
- 24:13Speaker 1: up to the cottage, goes into just to check and
- 24:17Speaker 1: sees her in there, and it wakes her up and
- 24:19Speaker 1: freaks her out, and she it, you know, meeting him
- 24:24Speaker 1: unexpectedly did spook her, and she tells him to leave,
- 24:28Speaker 1: basically tells him to leave because this is like, this
- 24:31Speaker 1: is her home. And he, while apologetic, was just concerned
- 24:35Speaker 1: because he's like, well, I'm sorry, I saw the boat,
- 24:38Speaker 1: wasn't sure who was up here. She says, well, this
- 24:40Speaker 1: is my home. I'm I'm Liara Keel. Excuse me, Lea
- 24:45Speaker 1: damn it.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Chat.
- 24:47Speaker 1: I was using Chat GBT to help me write my
- 24:50Speaker 1: notes and I asked it to pull up the summary
- 24:52Speaker 1: of the book, but it pulled up the summary of
- 24:54Speaker 1: a completely different story and it said the main character
- 24:57Speaker 1: was someone named Leela or Liara. And I was like,
- 25:00Speaker 1: this is not Chat, what are you doing. This is why,
- 25:06Speaker 1: like kids in school these days are failing a lot
- 25:09Speaker 1: because they're using Chat to write their essays for them
- 25:12Speaker 1: and and Chat is just doing it wrong. M That's
- 25:19Speaker 1: why a lot of teachers are going back to the
- 25:20Speaker 1: good old pen and paper. Yeah, you have to write it,
- 25:25Speaker 1: you have to write it yourself. Kids are still failing
- 25:29Speaker 1: because they still get chat to write the summer, to
- 25:31Speaker 1: write their essay for them, and it's still wrong, and
- 25:32Speaker 1: they just write it as is.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Yeah, most definitely, I do not endorse.
- 25:39Speaker 1: We're not endorsing chat here.
- 25:41Speaker 2: No read and write your own ship.
- 25:46Speaker 1: All right, that's right. So anyway, she kindly but as
- 25:56Speaker 1: certainly tells, basically tells Lauren to buzz off because she
- 26:01Speaker 1: because the thing is is that a Kila did not
- 26:03Speaker 1: come to the island to make friends. She came there
- 26:05Speaker 1: to hide, all right, to make a new life for
- 26:08Speaker 1: herself and really not get involved with the locals. But
- 26:13Speaker 1: unfortunately she later she quickly learns that she's going to
- 26:17Speaker 1: have to get involved with them one way or another,
- 26:19Speaker 1: because you know, she, despite having a home, she herself
- 26:23Speaker 1: does not know how to care for herself. I mean,
- 26:26Speaker 1: she knows how to care for herself in like the
- 26:28Speaker 1: most basic ways, but she does not know how to
- 26:31Speaker 1: basically survive on her own. The library had provided her
- 26:35Speaker 1: with all of her necessities, like you know, clothing, food,
- 26:41Speaker 1: and like other like necessities and amenities, and now she's
- 26:45Speaker 1: basically now for the first time in her life, she's
- 26:48Speaker 1: completely on her own, all right, And she realizes she's
- 26:52Speaker 1: going to need to learn basically learn how to do
- 26:57Speaker 1: this all on her own, but she has to learn
- 26:59Speaker 1: how to live if a homestead life, so she's not
- 27:03Speaker 1: so she knows she she she learns that, she realizes
- 27:07Speaker 1: she's gonna need to start growing, putting together a garden
- 27:12Speaker 1: Scott wish she can grow her own food and vegetables.
- 27:15Speaker 1: She needs salt, sugar, and she also needs a chicken
- 27:19Speaker 1: or some other form and possibly other livestock so that
- 27:23Speaker 1: way she'd have like meat, eggs, a steady supply of eggs,
- 27:27Speaker 1: and you know, other basic necessities. And then she's also
- 27:31Speaker 1: gonna need to start fixing up her house because the
- 27:33Speaker 1: house is in disarray, it's dusty, there are vines overgrowing
- 27:38Speaker 1: everything her. She later realizes her chimney is clogged when
- 27:42Speaker 1: she makes a failed attempt to cook some eggs, and
- 27:46Speaker 1: when she turns on her her wood, her wood fire stove.
- 27:51Speaker 1: The clogged chimney that is caused old smoke to like
- 27:55Speaker 1: billow into her house, so she so she has to
- 27:58Speaker 1: quickly clear it out. She goes so unfortunately, so unfortunately
- 28:06Speaker 1: for her, she has to go interact with the other locals,
- 28:10Speaker 1: especially since already one of her neighbors have realized, have
- 28:15Speaker 1: discovered that she's there. She can't really hide from them,
- 28:18Speaker 1: so she decides to try to softly integrate herself as
- 28:22Speaker 1: well as go into this town to get some supplies
- 28:24Speaker 1: that she needs. And she does go down into the store.
- 28:27Speaker 1: She goes down into the village, and she realizes that,
- 28:32Speaker 1: like much of the island, the village looks like it's
- 28:36Speaker 1: starting to fall apart. It's in disarray. People there look
- 28:40Speaker 1: very like, I don't want to say, like they're starving,
- 28:43Speaker 1: but they they look very like. They look very serious,
- 28:46Speaker 1: like they don't like they don't have time to like
- 28:49Speaker 1: actually enjoy their lives, like it's all work for them,
- 28:52Speaker 1: no play. And there's signs on the on like the village,
- 28:56Speaker 1: on the other cottages that there's a lot of weather,
- 29:00Speaker 1: there's a lot of wear and tear, like roofs that
- 29:03Speaker 1: look like they were quickly patched. There's in some places
- 29:07Speaker 1: where people's windows are completely shuttered and boarded up. But
- 29:10Speaker 1: as she walks through the town like, she notices that
- 29:12Speaker 1: the town, the fountain, that the Mermaid fountain in the center,
- 29:15Speaker 1: is completely dry with no idea how like, And when
- 29:20Speaker 1: she clearly remembered as a child that the fountain was lively,
- 29:23Speaker 1: there was water billowing for uh, there was water flowing
- 29:26Speaker 1: through it, and she the village, the island of Coultree
- 29:31Speaker 1: is a pale imitation of what she remembered from her childhood. Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 1: and she hint it hints that there was like there
- 29:37Speaker 1: was definitely a lot of changes that happened in the
- 29:40Speaker 1: like the twenty plus years since she'd been there. So
- 29:44Speaker 1: going going further into the village she'd been, she vaguely
- 29:46Speaker 1: remembered there used to be a grocer somewhere in the village.
- 29:49Speaker 1: But when she finds to where, But when she goes
- 29:51Speaker 1: to where it used to be, instead of an actual grocery,
- 29:53Speaker 1: she finds a big show, a bigery, and that's where
- 29:57Speaker 1: most of the village is congregated. She needs some the
- 30:00Speaker 1: friendly locals she meets the she meets the baker Brin.
- 30:04Speaker 1: Brinn is like a I think Brin is like a
- 30:07Speaker 1: satyr before I forget guys, like a lot of the
- 30:11Speaker 1: there's gonna be a lot of like there's a mix
- 30:14Speaker 1: of like humanoid characters like Kila herself is I don't
- 30:19Speaker 1: really know what her mythical race is, but she has
- 30:23Speaker 1: like pale blue skin and like dark and like real
- 30:27Speaker 1: like midnight blue hair that well, like in darker light
- 30:30Speaker 1: it looks like a midnight blue, but like in like
- 30:32Speaker 1: bright light or like she's in the sun, it turns
- 30:35Speaker 1: into like a like a deep sapphire. So I would say, like,
- 30:39Speaker 1: if we're going off of like D and D races,
- 30:41Speaker 1: she's probably like a genasi of some kind. And for
- 30:44Speaker 1: those of you who don't know, a genasi is like
- 30:45Speaker 1: a half gin. So it's it's a humanoid that has
- 30:48Speaker 1: like like a gin ancestor and depending on the element
- 30:52Speaker 1: the gin, Yeah, the gin is determines the color of
- 30:55Speaker 1: your skin. Like fire, you have red skin, water it's
- 30:58Speaker 1: blue skin, and so on. So, uh, that's what That's
- 31:02Speaker 1: what I'm assuming Kila is. It doesn't really like say
- 31:05Speaker 1: like what she like what her mythical race is. Bren
- 31:10Speaker 1: is a satyr of some kind because she has a
- 31:13Speaker 1: somewhat like goat like features and she also has like
- 31:16Speaker 1: little horns. She's very sweet. Brinn is very is a
- 31:20Speaker 1: very sweet person. She's very helpful. She's excited to meet
- 31:24Speaker 1: the new uh the newcomer to her village. She even
- 31:27Speaker 1: gets she even gives Kila a little welcome gifts like, oh, well,
- 31:31Speaker 1: here there's a whole basket full of cinnamon rolls.
- 31:35Speaker 2: Damn I know.
- 31:37Speaker 1: And then and Keila is like, oh, thanks, Well, I'm
- 31:40Speaker 1: actually here for some supplies. I moved back into my
- 31:43Speaker 1: parents my parents cottage, and I don't have any supplies,
- 31:47Speaker 1: so I just need and like gives her whole lists
- 31:50Speaker 1: and Brynn helps get Brent gets everything for her together,
- 31:54Speaker 1: like salt, sugar, some seeds for her homestead, even manages
- 31:59Speaker 1: to wrap rustle up a chicken for her. And it's
- 32:03Speaker 1: kind of funny because like, Kila has all these supplies
- 32:05Speaker 1: that she carries back to her cottage, and she ends
- 32:08Speaker 1: up losing her grip on the chicken and it runs
- 32:11Speaker 1: off into the forest. Like She's like, ah, damn it.
- 32:15Speaker 1: Now I'm like, now he got no chicken.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Got no chicken, Got no chicken.
- 32:23Speaker 1: And yep. So while she's there, she learns that Coultree
- 32:29Speaker 1: has fallen on hard times that she starts. He actually
- 32:32Speaker 1: learns from Brinn and some of the other locals. She
- 32:35Speaker 1: meets a very nice centaur woman and a few other people.
- 32:40Speaker 1: I forgot that I'm not really sure what the race
- 32:42Speaker 1: of this one other local is, but she has like
- 32:44Speaker 1: she's like four set, like four arms, and she just
- 32:48Speaker 1: looks like a normal person, but she has like four arms.
- 32:51Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 32:53Speaker 1: God, I'm so bad with the names. I gotta look
- 32:55Speaker 1: up their names.
- 33:01Speaker 2: M h. We have on record. Uh, let be on
- 33:07Speaker 2: record that Jacob is terrible with names. That's factual. It
- 33:11Speaker 2: took him forever to learn mine.
- 33:12Speaker 1: No, it didn't.
- 33:15Speaker 2: It's lies. Lies.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Devin, your name was like probably one of the easiest
- 33:21Speaker 1: names to remember.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Oh my God, don't think.
- 33:27Speaker 1: It's because you're a faggot.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Only God think.
- 33:33Speaker 1: Anyway. So Quila now as now Kila learns from her
- 33:41Speaker 1: new quote unquote friends neighbors, the locals, that culture has
- 33:46Speaker 1: followed onto some pretty tough times. Because the thing is
- 33:50Speaker 1: is that magic is very wide, is very is. The
- 33:54Speaker 1: use of magic is very widespread within the Empire. But
- 33:57Speaker 1: the thing is, because of the Emperors of the magic
- 34:00Speaker 1: is consolidated to like the more inner parts of the Empire.
- 34:05Speaker 1: So they're often so like the sorcerers of the Empire
- 34:09Speaker 1: are using their magic for a lot of different purposes,
- 34:12Speaker 1: but one of those main purposes is controlling the weather. Right,
- 34:16Speaker 1: So oftentimes they're doing the experiments or they're doing things
- 34:20Speaker 1: to like regulate the weather near the center of the empire,
- 34:23Speaker 1: but then this often causes a lot of magical backlash
- 34:28Speaker 1: that radiates outward to the to the outer islands. So
- 34:32Speaker 1: what used to happen was whenever this what you the
- 34:35Speaker 1: way it used to be was whenever this began to
- 34:38Speaker 1: happen and the weather begins to turn like very chaotic
- 34:41Speaker 1: in the outer islands, the empire would send a rotation
- 34:45Speaker 1: of sorcerers every few months to come to like different
- 34:47Speaker 1: islands to cast a few spells to settle the weather down,
- 34:52Speaker 1: and also to cast another number of spells. Because the
- 34:55Speaker 1: thing is is that Coultree itself, it's not a very
- 35:00Speaker 1: the island itself is not really suitable for life for
- 35:04Speaker 1: like specific types of crops or life or livestock, and
- 35:09Speaker 1: the locals often relied on this. Sorry, sorry, my phone
- 35:17Speaker 1: kept geting his just blowing up the notifications right now.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I'm like, it's and it's distracting.
- 35:23Speaker 3: Anyway.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Clear sorry, clear that up. So aside from using from
- 35:26Speaker 1: the regular rotation of sorcerers that come in and regulate
- 35:30Speaker 1: the weather, these sorcerers also help them with other, uh date,
- 35:33Speaker 1: with other day to day necessities. So the sorcerers would
- 35:39Speaker 1: help the shepherds of the of the merhorse livestock. Because
- 35:43Speaker 1: think about myrhorses is that mrhorses are magical creatures that
- 35:47Speaker 1: were created by sorcerers. They are not a naturally occurring
- 35:51Speaker 1: species and because of that, they are not naturally fertile
- 35:56Speaker 1: and they do not have the ability to pro create
- 35:58Speaker 1: on their own act. The only way they could appro
- 36:02Speaker 1: create was with magical intervention like they had. Sorcerers had
- 36:06Speaker 1: to use special spells to help these horses conceive, and
- 36:09Speaker 1: they also needed to use other spells to help them
- 36:12Speaker 1: give birth to to their foul Yeah. And then aside
- 36:17Speaker 1: from that, the soil on the island isn't exactly the
- 36:19Speaker 1: best type of soil for other types of like foreign
- 36:23Speaker 1: crops like the apple orchards and other like fruits and
- 36:28Speaker 1: and harvests that the island typically produces. They're not native
- 36:34Speaker 1: to that island, so the islands like soil is not
- 36:39Speaker 1: naturally suited for helping these Are you okay? Yep, okay, sorry,
- 36:46Speaker 1: your your camera started to like, uh glitch.
- 36:49Speaker 2: Same with yours, but it's fine now okay cool?
- 36:58Speaker 1: Anyway, did you anything or like was my.
- 37:03Speaker 2: It just did a random skip and then it continued, No,
- 37:07Speaker 2: you're fine, random.
- 37:10Speaker 1: Lip blipp So the sorcerer would also So sorcerers would
- 37:19Speaker 1: have to also come, would also have to use their
- 37:21Speaker 1: magic to cast spells on the on the island soil,
- 37:25Speaker 1: the crops, even like the underground water sources that they
- 37:29Speaker 1: relied on, just to keep everything flow, just to keep
- 37:32Speaker 1: everything moving, to keep the crops growing, to keep the
- 37:36Speaker 1: the underground reservoir topped up. Yeah, you know, to help
- 37:42Speaker 1: to help the Mr. Horse's foul, and you know a
- 37:45Speaker 1: few other things. But the thing is is that near
- 37:48Speaker 1: the end of the emperor of the pre of the
- 37:50Speaker 1: current emperor's reign. Right now, Kila doesn't know if the
- 37:53Speaker 1: emperor is still in power or if the revolutionaries had
- 37:55Speaker 1: gotten rid of him, but either way, near the end
- 37:59Speaker 1: of this of his reign, he had begun pulling back
- 38:05Speaker 1: his sorcerers and other magical resources, and he stopped, and
- 38:09Speaker 1: he stopped the rotations of sorcerers coming out to regular
- 38:13Speaker 1: to help these outer islands with their uh, with their needs.
- 38:17Speaker 1: You know, crops, weather, part their livestock everything. So Caultry
- 38:23Speaker 1: for the last few years has been have have been
- 38:26Speaker 1: struggle busting, all right. Their crops are failing their reservoirs
- 38:31Speaker 1: are are drying up there. The mur horse population has
- 38:36Speaker 1: dwindled because and Lauren Uh who Lauren Kuila's friendly name,
- 38:44Speaker 1: overly friendly neighbor is Uh is the only shepherd in
- 38:49Speaker 1: the is the only horse shepherd at the moment, and
- 38:53Speaker 1: he's and he Uh later tells Quila that there's that
- 38:59Speaker 1: none of his horses have had a foul in years,
- 39:04Speaker 1: and their population has gone down by like half. And
- 39:09Speaker 1: without the sorcerers, the rotation of sorcerers coming through, they're
- 39:12Speaker 1: not He's afraid that eventually their horse population is going
- 39:16Speaker 1: to go extinct. So there's a moment like so when
- 39:23Speaker 1: Kila arrives back in her home after learning all this,
- 39:26Speaker 1: and she goes home with all of her supplies and
- 39:28Speaker 1: loses her chicken. She finds Lauren at her house again.
- 39:31Speaker 1: And Lauren had cleared a path from had cleaned up
- 39:35Speaker 1: some of her yard. He had cut down a lot
- 39:37Speaker 1: of the vines from her from her house. He even
- 39:41Speaker 1: unclogged even unclogged her her chimney because he saw the
- 39:47Speaker 1: smoke coming out from her failed attempt to cook this
- 39:54Speaker 1: This man is a sweetheart. I'm telling you right now,
- 39:57Speaker 1: this man is a sweetheart. And he's just he's whatever.
- 40:01Speaker 1: What he's doing is just being a good neighbor, all right,
- 40:04Speaker 1: He's not he has no he I just want to
- 40:06Speaker 1: put that out there. He's not doing anything wrong. But
- 40:08Speaker 1: it does for someone like Kila, who does not really
- 40:11Speaker 1: want nosy neighbors getting up in her business, it does
- 40:15Speaker 1: put her on edge and it does actually upset her.
- 40:18Speaker 1: And when Lauren tries to, like, you know, be more neighborly,
- 40:22Speaker 1: help cook around, help clean up some more, and cook
- 40:24Speaker 1: around and cook some food for them, she lays it
- 40:28Speaker 1: out for him, like, listen, I value my privacy and
- 40:32Speaker 1: like we're not really friends, we're neighbors, and I really
- 40:35Speaker 1: value my privacy and I can't have you coming around
- 40:38Speaker 1: every day and getting up in my business. And this
- 40:43Speaker 1: puts off Lauren, like it feels he feels really bad
- 40:46Speaker 1: and he leaves and I'm just like you, I was
- 40:48Speaker 1: like killing you, march your ass over there, and you
- 40:50Speaker 1: apologize to that man, right? But no, But I understand,
- 40:55Speaker 1: like she she's also afraid because she has an She
- 41:00Speaker 1: technically stole these books from the library, and if the
- 41:04Speaker 1: Empire is still around and they find out that she's there,
- 41:06Speaker 1: they may not take into consideration that she was just
- 41:09Speaker 1: trying to protect those books, all right, And then also
- 41:12Speaker 1: on the other hand, she's afraid that if the revolutionaries
- 41:17Speaker 1: find her too, like what are what's to say that
- 41:20Speaker 1: they're not going to do the same thing exactly, So
- 41:24Speaker 1: she's not really she's not sure who she can trust.
- 41:26Speaker 1: So she's just trying. She's trying to make sure that
- 41:30Speaker 1: she protects her books and make sure that she doesn't
- 41:34Speaker 1: get caught. But the problem is is that after buying
- 41:37Speaker 1: all those supplies and realizing that she has no idea
- 41:40Speaker 1: how to grow a garden or how to really survive
- 41:43Speaker 1: on homestead, she realizes she's gonna need to find she's
- 41:47Speaker 1: gonna need some form of like some source of income,
- 41:50Speaker 1: yeah right, She's gonna need like some kind of cover
- 41:53Speaker 1: for herself, make it, integrate herself into the into the
- 41:56Speaker 1: island society. And she also comes up with an idea
- 42:00Speaker 1: to help the people of the to help the people Coultree, right,
- 42:04Speaker 1: because she doesn't know if sorcerers are ever going to
- 42:07Speaker 1: come back to help the island, and she doesn't know
- 42:11Speaker 1: if like, and she doesn't know if these people are
- 42:15Speaker 1: able to would be able to figure it out themselves.
- 42:18Speaker 1: So she comes with an idea to help them subtly
- 42:22Speaker 1: while uh while maintaining a front and like her own,
- 42:25Speaker 1: maintaining a storefront and bringing in some form of income
- 42:31Speaker 1: since she does. And she does this by deciding she's
- 42:34Speaker 1: going to open a secret spell shop, Coultree's first spell shop.
- 42:40Speaker 1: So her idea was this. She found some old cookbooks
- 42:43Speaker 1: in her She found an old cookbook in her family's
- 42:45Speaker 1: cottage and uh, and she finds several different recipes in there,
- 42:49Speaker 1: mainly a recipe for jam, and she decides that she's
- 42:55Speaker 1: going to open up a jam She's going to open
- 42:58Speaker 1: up a spell shop, but she's going to use uh
- 43:00Speaker 1: selling jam as like a front. Like she'll sell jam
- 43:04Speaker 1: as the primary uh as like her primary product. So
- 43:09Speaker 1: so the like to the public, it's it's a jam shop.
- 43:12Speaker 1: She sells jam, raspberry jam, and eventually she wants to
- 43:16Speaker 1: like make come up with other recipes of jam.
- 43:18Speaker 2: But to but to people that know secretly, yeah.
- 43:23Speaker 1: It's a spell shop. And she she consults with Kas
- 43:27Speaker 1: and the two of them decide that before they do
- 43:29Speaker 1: any before they decide like start doing that and selling
- 43:32Speaker 1: her like spell remedies, they want to they need to
- 43:35Speaker 1: experiment so the so the begin like shuffling, categorizing, and
- 43:40Speaker 1: shuffling through all the spell books they found, and they
- 43:42Speaker 1: found some very useful ones, mainly books on plant growth,
- 43:46Speaker 1: books on weather, books on like controlling water, and she
- 43:51Speaker 1: even finds a book that has recipes for helping horses
- 43:57Speaker 1: foul m. So she decides, since she's never actually used magic,
- 44:03Speaker 1: she has no formal training in magic aside from just
- 44:07Speaker 1: the necessary training that she has when it comes to
- 44:10Speaker 1: being a librarian, so research and cataloging, she decides to
- 44:14Speaker 1: experiment with some of the spells that she thinks would
- 44:17Speaker 1: be more useful as well as not that hard to complete.
- 44:22Speaker 1: So the very first spell she experiments with is a
- 44:24Speaker 1: plant growth spell. So like, So the thing is the spells,
- 44:32Speaker 1: the spells that they're using a component base is a
- 44:34Speaker 1: mix of components and magical words. So like, they use
- 44:39Speaker 1: an ancient language, and this ancient language an ancient language
- 44:42Speaker 1: that when they speak the words, it casts a spell. Right,
- 44:46Speaker 1: But in some cases certain spells need to be able
- 44:49Speaker 1: to Certain spells need like extra components in order for
- 44:53Speaker 1: it to work properly. And she finds that these components
- 44:56Speaker 1: can be found around the island easily found around the
- 44:59Speaker 1: island or or substituted with another similar ingredient. So she
- 45:05Speaker 1: begins her experiments and her one of her first experiments
- 45:09Speaker 1: for her plant growth her plant growth remedy results in
- 45:14Speaker 1: a cactus growing in her garden.
- 45:19Speaker 4: And the thing is is that part one of the
- 45:24Speaker 4: components that that this growth remedy needs this plant growth
- 45:27Speaker 4: remedy is it needs a gust of wind, like a
- 45:33Speaker 4: gust of like easterly wind.
- 45:35Speaker 1: And she thought, well, I mean, we can't always rely
- 45:38Speaker 1: on like good wind. So she decides to like point
- 45:42Speaker 1: herself in like an easter like an eastward direction and
- 45:45Speaker 1: blow and she blows on the on the components because
- 45:49Speaker 1: basically it's like the she needs a pine cone and
- 45:53Speaker 1: a bunch of other like little ingredients, and then she breathes.
- 45:56Speaker 1: She blows on the pine cone in like an easterly direction,
- 46:01Speaker 1: and then she plants the pine cone to see what happens. Well,
- 46:04Speaker 1: the only thing that pops out of the ground is
- 46:06Speaker 1: a cactus. And she's like, huh, I guess interesting, I
- 46:12Speaker 1: guess we do need like an actual easterly wind. So
- 46:15Speaker 1: she tries again, and this time the remedy works when
- 46:19Speaker 1: she actually adds like a like she holds up the
- 46:21Speaker 1: pine cone with the rest of the ingredients to the
- 46:23Speaker 1: winds and the east wind blows on it. She plants
- 46:25Speaker 1: and then she buries it in her garden and then
- 46:28Speaker 1: suddenly like uh, then she leaves goes back to the
- 46:32Speaker 1: to the village to get more supplies. And and also
- 46:36Speaker 1: like talk to the baker Brynn, because she decides that well,
- 46:40Speaker 1: the one person in this town that would benefit her
- 46:45Speaker 1: jam shop the most would be the baker Brind because Brent.
- 46:50Speaker 1: Because and she came up with an idea of going
- 46:52Speaker 1: into business with Brinn. Uh Kila would make the jam
- 46:56Speaker 1: and she can sell and she can uh and she
- 46:59Speaker 1: can provide like some of the some of the jam
- 47:01Speaker 1: stock to Brinn for a little extra profit like percentage
- 47:04Speaker 1: of profit. And then of course she would sell her
- 47:07Speaker 1: they would she would sell her own in her shop right,
- 47:10Speaker 1: and she already made several test patches of of her jam.
- 47:15Speaker 1: So she goes and pitches the idea to Brin. And
- 47:17Speaker 1: but when she comes back, she finds that her whole
- 47:19Speaker 1: garden has been become overgrown so like all of the
- 47:24Speaker 1: seeds that she had planted from raspberry from like raspberries
- 47:28Speaker 1: to other vegetables and things like that have all just
- 47:30Speaker 1: completely exploded, luckily for her. Luckily for her, it didn't
- 47:35Speaker 1: get too out of control, but her the vines growing
- 47:38Speaker 1: the raspberries did like extend into the out of her garden,
- 47:42Speaker 1: into the forest. So she was like, huh, we might
- 47:45Speaker 1: need to adjust the we might need to adjust the
- 47:48Speaker 1: formula a little bit more. Yeah, And then kaz comes
- 47:52Speaker 1: running up and he's like, look, look what also happens
- 47:55Speaker 1: and he points and the little cactus that had grown
- 47:58Speaker 1: from her first experiment was moving.
- 48:04Speaker 2: It was it's walking around.
- 48:06Speaker 1: It's running around.
- 48:08Speaker 2: Oh god, just like it's like final fantasy. Oh God, yep.
- 48:15Speaker 1: And they're like, huh, well, Caz, I think I figured
- 48:18Speaker 1: out how you were brought to life. The thing is, though,
- 48:24Speaker 1: I think like the thing is though, the little cactus
- 48:27Speaker 1: who they call now call meap because that's the only
- 48:30Speaker 1: word that meat can say. Oh so cute meat can
- 48:34Speaker 1: understand them. But like, it just goes me.
- 48:38Speaker 2: I love that. I'd love Caz.
- 48:41Speaker 1: Quickly befriends meet and Meep is now like, will now
- 48:45Speaker 1: help Caz well is now throughout the story, we'll be
- 48:48Speaker 1: seen helping Kazut with like his chords and so like
- 48:53Speaker 1: they're starting to like get like as they're like experimenting
- 48:59Speaker 1: with other spells and other remedies, they are starting to
- 49:04Speaker 1: like you'll see meat running around with Kaz and it's
- 49:06Speaker 1: pretty cute. Quila perfects the remedies. She calls them her
- 49:14Speaker 1: remedies because she doesn't want to like outwardly like sell
- 49:17Speaker 1: them as like.
- 49:17Speaker 2: Oh, spell of course does when get in trouble m.
- 49:25Speaker 1: Exactly h She quickly opens her jam shop now that
- 49:30Speaker 1: she has plenty of raspberries to use for her jam.
- 49:33Speaker 1: The locals, many of the locals are actually are excited
- 49:37Speaker 1: because it's something new and like, oh, the jam is
- 49:39Speaker 1: really nice. So they begins to She begins to earn
- 49:44Speaker 1: a steady income, and she also starts butting heads with
- 49:50Speaker 1: one of the local fishermen because he's just a grouchy
- 49:52Speaker 1: old fart, like he just doesn't like anything. He will.
- 49:56Speaker 1: He dead ass walked into her shop, and she's like,
- 49:59Speaker 1: would you like jam? I don't like jam? Then why
- 50:02Speaker 1: are you here? Just came to see? Okay, but yeah,
- 50:08Speaker 1: he's just like he's just a troublemaker. Lauren comes over
- 50:13Speaker 1: later and actually it apologizes, like he tells her that
- 50:18Speaker 1: he didn't mean to like step on her toes and
- 50:22Speaker 1: invade her privacy, It's just that he He admits that
- 50:26Speaker 1: he was excited that she's come back because he As
- 50:30Speaker 1: it turns out, Lauren used to spend a lot of
- 50:33Speaker 1: time with her family, like they would often let him
- 50:37Speaker 1: come over and play. She doesn't really remember him mainly
- 50:40Speaker 1: because like even as a child she was, she had
- 50:42Speaker 1: her nose buried in a book all the time, So
- 50:45Speaker 1: while she vaguely remembered playing with some of the village children,
- 50:49Speaker 1: she mostly kept to herself even back then, and Lauren
- 50:53Speaker 1: reveals that he he felt he feels like he owed
- 50:56Speaker 1: her parents a lot because they gave him a safe
- 50:58Speaker 1: haven away from them because his parents were the original
- 51:02Speaker 1: owners of the grower of the local grocer, but his
- 51:05Speaker 1: parents were abuse his parents mainly his father was abusive
- 51:09Speaker 1: and it wasn't a very good It wasn't a good
- 51:12Speaker 1: household to live in. But he eventually apprenticed to the
- 51:16Speaker 1: previous uh Mr Horse shepherd and he took over the
- 51:22Speaker 1: took over as the shepherd of the Mr Horses, So
- 51:26Speaker 1: they slowly start to build up a friendship. Like he
- 51:29Speaker 1: tries his best not to like impose too much, though
- 51:33Speaker 1: she realizes, well, I kind of do need him because
- 51:36Speaker 1: he's very handy, and she she convinces him to build
- 51:41Speaker 1: her some shelves for her for her jam so because
- 51:46Speaker 1: like she made she opens the main room of her
- 51:49Speaker 1: house as the jam shop so and uses the shelves
- 51:52Speaker 1: to separate the main the main room of the house
- 51:55Speaker 1: from the kitchen and uh so he was happy to
- 52:00Speaker 1: build it. He was more than happy to build the
- 52:02Speaker 1: shelves for her, and he also builds her up some
- 52:05Speaker 1: bookshelves because she convinces him. She tells him that she
- 52:08Speaker 1: needs some bookshelves for her room because of course of
- 52:12Speaker 1: course she uh She also gets a friendly tip for
- 52:21Speaker 1: one of the locals because some of the locals in
- 52:23Speaker 1: the in the village, they because of their body shape,
- 52:26Speaker 1: mainly the big centaur, they can't necessarily fit into the
- 52:31Speaker 1: more human sized houses and while they want to be
- 52:35Speaker 1: able to enjoy her shop and shop there from time
- 52:38Speaker 1: to time, it would be nice if there was some
- 52:40Speaker 1: way to accommodate them so she can. She also had
- 52:43Speaker 1: convinced him to help her build like a counter outside
- 52:46Speaker 1: of her shop so that way she could set up
- 52:48Speaker 1: some of her jams that way, you know, the more
- 52:51Speaker 1: like physically challenged locals will be able to enjoy her
- 52:55Speaker 1: shop too.
- 52:56Speaker 2: That's so cute.
- 52:58Speaker 1: Yeah, and Kiera is beginning to open up more like
- 53:02Speaker 1: she's opening up more to Lauren, and Lauren actually like
- 53:05Speaker 1: introduces her to his murrhorse herd, and there was one
- 53:09Speaker 1: particular Mr Horse it's like a golden scale horse who
- 53:13Speaker 1: is very friendly and also for some reason, loves tomatoes.
- 53:17Speaker 1: She like, Quila brings some tomatoes as sort of like
- 53:21Speaker 1: a thing as a thank you to to Lauren already
- 53:28Speaker 1: forgetting his name. Mhm, I was able to say, Karen, No,
- 53:32Speaker 1: it's Lauren, Karen, and uh, he actually like shows her
- 53:40Speaker 1: some of the stuff, some of the ways he takes
- 53:42Speaker 1: care of the of the Murr horses, even lets her
- 53:44Speaker 1: ride one of the Murr horses, which she realizes she
- 53:48Speaker 1: thoroughly enjoys. And uh it's also this was like the
- 53:53Speaker 1: point where he reveals to her that his that is
- 53:56Speaker 1: heard is a lot smaller than it used to be
- 53:58Speaker 1: and that the horse is han't fouled in years and
- 54:02Speaker 1: that's because of the lack of sorcerers. So now Kila,
- 54:08Speaker 1: having perfected her growth remedy, she had already begun selling
- 54:13Speaker 1: her magical her growth remedies to some of the locals.
- 54:16Speaker 1: Her first customer was the centaur the center. She had
- 54:20Speaker 1: pitched the idea to the centaur like she had like
- 54:23Speaker 1: made friends with the centaur, and the centaur told her that, well,
- 54:27Speaker 1: my grandfather grew. I have this cherry tree that used
- 54:33Speaker 1: to grow and produce a wide harvest of cherries every year.
- 54:38Speaker 1: But since the sorcerer stopped, the cherry tree can't grow
- 54:41Speaker 1: anymore because it's not suitable for the island. It can't
- 54:43Speaker 1: survive on the island. So Kila cautiously pitches one of
- 54:47Speaker 1: her remedies. She gives she made the basically, she slathered
- 54:51Speaker 1: the mixture onto the pine cone, wrapped it in some
- 54:56Speaker 1: and some linen, and she's and she says, here, just
- 54:59Speaker 1: take this, and just take this and bury this into
- 55:05Speaker 1: the bury this into the like at the base of
- 55:08Speaker 1: the tree, and just wait and your tree should start
- 55:11Speaker 1: blooming again. And the centauri takes it and it works,
- 55:18Speaker 1: and she comes back and she immediately starts telling others,
- 55:21Speaker 1: and she, of course she told others of the growth
- 55:25Speaker 1: of the growth of the growth remedies, and several other
- 55:29Speaker 1: villagers come and make purchases. The thing is though, as
- 55:35Speaker 1: it turned out, the island is also home to a
- 55:38Speaker 1: type of like forest spirits. So when they appear, they
- 55:41Speaker 1: look like they look like bears, like misty bears with
- 55:46Speaker 1: glowing eyes. And because they realize that she's using magic
- 55:52Speaker 1: to help the trees around the island. Because when Kila
- 55:55Speaker 1: was experimenting with the remedies, she actually experiments on some
- 56:00Speaker 1: of the apple orchards, and well, unfortunately, when because these
- 56:04Speaker 1: were the early experiments, some of them don't go the
- 56:06Speaker 1: way she was expecting, like some of them don't really
- 56:09Speaker 1: grow or do anything. But one causes one of her
- 56:12Speaker 1: experiments causes one of the apple orchard trees to turn
- 56:16Speaker 1: into a bird, not a big bird, but it like
- 56:20Speaker 1: a very colorful apple orchard color scheme like red white.
- 56:25Speaker 1: And because like you know, like there's this there's a
- 56:27Speaker 1: specific type of apple tree that grows these white petals,
- 56:33Speaker 1: so those are the kind of apple trees. And and
- 56:40Speaker 1: one of the trees she experimented on all started bursting
- 56:43Speaker 1: into song, so there's currently a singing apple tree.
- 56:49Speaker 2: Interesting, so this tree spirits.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Around the island all realize that, hey, someone is using
- 56:56Speaker 1: magic to heal the trees again. So they all come
- 57:00Speaker 1: to her and they all bring her like little gifts,
- 57:03Speaker 1: and she convinces them like, if you can bring me
- 57:05Speaker 1: the ingredients for my remedies, I can give you all.
- 57:11Speaker 1: I can help you all. They lead her to their trees. Yeah,
- 57:14Speaker 1: they all had lead her to the to like a
- 57:16Speaker 1: bunch of their trees around the island and she uses
- 57:18Speaker 1: like up her she had made like a big batch
- 57:21Speaker 1: of her remedies and she ends up using all of
- 57:24Speaker 1: them to heal the trees around the islands. And when
- 57:29Speaker 1: she comes back, she's like, I'm gonna need more. I'm
- 57:32Speaker 1: gonna have to make more because more customers are coming
- 57:34Speaker 1: for them.
- 57:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:38Speaker 1: She also experiments with remedy with spells to like began
- 57:43Speaker 1: helping like the water reservoirs. One of her first experiments
- 57:48Speaker 1: is on a fountain in the center of the village
- 57:52Speaker 1: which comes back to life and the thing is unfortunately,
- 57:58Speaker 1: another person has come to the island as well. So
- 58:03Speaker 1: while she was spending time with Lauren at the when
- 58:05Speaker 1: she wants to go visit Lauren at his at his farm,
- 58:10Speaker 1: a storm rolls in. Unfortunately for Coultree, the storms that
- 58:17Speaker 1: roll in are very chaotic and they're super charged with magic,
- 58:22Speaker 1: so they can be very dangerous to be caught in.
- 58:25Speaker 1: So unfortunately for k for Kila, while she was visiting
- 58:29Speaker 1: the while she was visiting the shop the village and
- 58:32Speaker 1: tried to make it back to her shop, she gets
- 58:34Speaker 1: caught in the storm. So she has to run to
- 58:37Speaker 1: the closest shelter, which is Lauren's cottage. Lauren lets her
- 58:42Speaker 1: in and they and helps her dry up, get herself dry,
- 58:46Speaker 1: gives her some dry clothes, and while they are waiting
- 58:50Speaker 1: out the storm, Lauren Lauren likes to like keep like
- 58:54Speaker 1: a little like shutter open just so he can just
- 58:57Speaker 1: keep an eye out on things out side of the storm.
- 59:01Speaker 1: And he noticed that there was a boat that got
- 59:03Speaker 1: caught in the storm, but it wasn't about that belonged
- 59:06Speaker 1: to any of the fishermen. So Lauren quickly runs out
- 59:12Speaker 1: and tries to and tries to rescue whoever was on
- 59:14Speaker 1: the boat. And he manages to rescue some woman who's
- 59:18Speaker 1: later who later tells them that her name is Redaine,
- 59:24Speaker 1: now Redine because she was caught in the corn in
- 59:27Speaker 1: the corn storm, she was and she was in bad condition.
- 59:32Speaker 1: She was water logged and running a fever. So after
- 59:37Speaker 1: the storm ends, Lauren sends Kila to the village healer.
- 59:42Speaker 1: The village Healer, Now, I'm not even sure what this
- 59:46Speaker 1: guy is because he's kind of he's kind of like
- 59:49Speaker 1: brand with this satyr like like physical body, like he
- 59:56Speaker 1: has these brothers, he has these huge antlers and for
- 59:59Speaker 1: the most part he looks human, but he has a
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: tail and he also has a massive pair of wings.
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: Yeah, so.
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Kuila calls him to go help Redaine, and she goes
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: back to her shop just to make sure everything was okay,
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: because she didn't because since she couldn't make it back
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: to the shop, she wasn't able to lock it down
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: for the storm. But Kasin Meat had managed to had
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: managed to just find on their own but before But
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: the thing is, when she got there she realized she
- 1:00:31Speaker 1: finds that she has a unusual guess a murrwoman, a mermaid.
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: So earlier in the book, Kila, when Kila was visiting,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: had gone down to the docks to see her to
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: get her books from the boat. To transport her books
- 1:00:49Speaker 1: up from the boat, she had seen a mermaid in
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: the cove and the mermaid had been playing with her child,
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: a little merbaby or a little child. The problem is
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: is that so usually when murmaid when sea creatures like
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: mermaids and the murr horses get caught in the storm,
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: what they would do whenever there's a like a chaotic
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: spell storm going on, they would just dive into deeper
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: waters to protect themselves. Well, unfortunately, the little murder child
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: didn't dive deep enough and it got caught in the storm.
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: And the thing is is that there are wild surges
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: of magic that happened throughout the storm, and one of
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: these stur surges that struck the baby, and the baby
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: was now suffering from like some sort of like storm sickness.
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: And the thing is is that because its body had
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: been charged with like magic, with magic, it couldn't go
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: into the water because the water was making it worse.
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: So the mermaid had to take it out of the
- 1:01:49Speaker 1: water and she dragged it, she dragged herself up to
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: the cottage because she'd learned because she she also had
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: learned that that Kila was using magic to heal the island.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: So Kila and kas immediately jump into action. They pull
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: up the catalog of books and find one that possibly
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: has special healing remedies to especially remedies that would cure
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: like storm sickness. So Kila uses the remedy on the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: little or the murchild and the murchild and it heals
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: the murchild, clears its body of the of the storm sickness,
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: and the mermaid was able to take take him back
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: to the water. Later on, though, Kila learns that one
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: of the Murr horses on Lawrence Farm in Lawrence Herd
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: also developed storm sickness. Is when Lauren ran out to
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: rescue Redained from her ship during the storm. The horse
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: that he the horse that he called to help him,
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: also got struck with some magic from the storm, and
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: it too was beginning to get sick. So Lauren, excuse me.
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: So Lauren tells Quila about it, and Quila realizing like, okay,
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: we can do this. I already know how to do this,
- 1:03:05Speaker 1: she uses the same remedy that she used on the
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: on the muchild. And the thing is Redane was right
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: there and not wanting to like let on that she's
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: using magic because she wasn't sure if Dane was like
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: an imperial or just another like wayward traveler like her.
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: She subtly uses this the remedy on the Mrhorse and
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: heals her. The thing is, though, later on, when they're
- 1:03:31Speaker 1: all in the village, the villagers are celebrating because the
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: fountain which she had used one of her spells on,
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: had come back to life, and Dane recognized it as magic,
- 1:03:44Speaker 1: and she stepped forward and revealed herself to be an
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: imperial inquisitor. Uh oh, and she and she demands that
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: the villagers tell her who casts a spell because this
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: is illegal magic. And the thing is, none of the
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: villagers know who who was casting the spells and the magic.
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: Bryn and a few other of the ladies that frequent
- 1:04:07Speaker 1: the bake the bakery, they all they all know it's
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: it's Quila, but they immediately, like they immediately made it
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: clear that, oh, they're not going to give her up ship. Yeah.
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: Because the thing is is that when Kila was beginning
- 1:04:28Speaker 1: to like make more of her remedies for like the
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: plant growth, she let her seat, she let them in
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: on her secret, and they also started helping her with
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: making the remedies.
- 1:04:36Speaker 3: Uh.
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: So they basically all formed a little coven for themselves,
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: a little island coven. So they're not they're not giving out,
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: like they didn't want to give Kila's identity away, but
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: Redine is basically like throwing around this like weight of
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: her authority and trying to get the villagers to give
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: up who was casting the magic.
- 1:04:57Speaker 3: Yeah, and Dane.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Like, the thing is, Redaine interrogates that that same old
- 1:05:10Speaker 1: man that was giving Kila some trouble at her shop
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: a few days before, and he point immediately points fingers
- 1:05:16Speaker 1: at Quila because he's like, these have been acting strange
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: ever since she got here, all right, ever since she's
- 1:05:24Speaker 1: got here. The bakery selling jam, her cherry trees growing cherries.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: There's an apple tree singing in the orchard. Yeah, pretty much.
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: Dane runs up to Kila's cottage. The thing is, though
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Kila had managed to like beat Daine there and with
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Lawrence help, they had hid the they hid the books
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: in her They managed to hide all the books in
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: uh away. But Dane stills. Thing is, Redane still somehow
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: figured out where that they were hiding spell books and
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: had tried to break into lawrence cottage where they had
- 1:06:10Speaker 1: hit them. Because the thing is that what they did
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: was they got they loaded all the books back onto
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: Kila's boat, and they there was like a little hidden
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: cove that they could hide it in, so they selled
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: the cove around. They selled the boat around into the
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: hidden cove and hit and hit the boat with the
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: books there. Now, Unfortunately, Redine somehow figured out that's where
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: they were, and she tracked down the boat, and she
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: tried threatening Dane and Kaz for the to give her
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: the books, right, but she ends up sucking up and
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: let's see here, let me get the full details. Oh yeah,
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: so like Ridane like tried to steal the books, but
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Kaz and Meet ended up getting the outsmarting her and
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: restrains her. And Dane reveals that she's not actually an investigator,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: She's not an imperial inquisitor. She is actually the she's
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: the heiress to the throne of the Empire.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Well fuck yeah, so here's the thing she is.
- 1:07:30Speaker 1: Actually she was actually like in terms of like in
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: the line of succession, she was like the thirtieth in line.
- 1:07:37Speaker 1: She was so far removed from the royal family that
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: she did not really have a connection with the emperor
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: like her family was they were nobility, and she herself
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: was was studying to be a storm caller, like work
- 1:07:51Speaker 1: like a wind caller. They would you know, they're the
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: type of sorcerers that would sail on imperial boats to
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: help give the boats like favorable wins, like conjure favorable winds,
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: and also to like steady the weather. Yeah, but the
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: thing is, after the revolution, she reveals that the revolution
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: was successful and the emperor had been deposed. But now
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: the new government, which is still like dealing with the
- 1:08:20Speaker 1: aftermath and the chaos of overthrowing the empire, they had
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: begun to hunt down any person that may have that
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: may have some sort of connection to the emperor. So
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: any person who's in line for the throne, they are
- 1:08:39Speaker 1: hunting them down and killing them, arresting and executing them.
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: And the thing is, she learns that she was next
- 1:08:47Speaker 1: in line. After they pretty much hunted down all of
- 1:08:49Speaker 1: her other cousins, she learned that they that she was
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: basically next in line. So instead of staying and allowing
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: the revolutionaries to like arrest and execute her, she decides
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: to say, fuck that, I'm out of here. She gives up,
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: She leaves behind her Like she was a pretty she
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: lived a pretty privileged life, and she was also in line,
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: and she was also studying to be a wind caller
- 1:09:11Speaker 1: or a wind speaker, and decides to just run. Yeah,
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: and that's how she ended up on Cultree because culture
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: is as far is probably as far as you can get.
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: But uh so cute. But you know, she didn't exactly
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: hide herself very well, and now she's kind of put
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: herself in a odd position with the islanders.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: UH.
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: Cuila decides to forgive her and UH an officer offers
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: her an opportunity to just start her life over. Yeah,
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: you know, since she's a win speaker, she can she's
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: trained in magic, so she decides to include her in
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: her little island Cobin and try and learn some more
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: things about UH magic. Mainly, she wants us try learning
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: how to use wind speaking because there's this specific spell
- 1:10:01Speaker 1: that Kila has been wanting to experiment with in order
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: to regulate the weather and stop these spell storms from
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: coming through. But the problem is is that this spell
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: needs a full choir of people, like at least five
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: five sorcerers to cast a spell in Unison in order
- 1:10:20Speaker 1: to in order to stop the weather.
- 1:10:23Speaker 5: Yeah, but that's the time, but Quila decides to wait
- 1:10:32Speaker 5: hold that off until later.
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: She helps Radine reinvent herself and Brent actually gives Redain
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: a job at the bakery, and towards the end, the
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: two of them actually start a relationship. Oh yeah, a
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: little Yeah. So the thing is herd This doesn't last
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: very long because, as it turns out, Redaine was being
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: pursued by uh, was actually being pursued by an imperial vessel.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: Oh dear.
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: And the thing is the Royal fleet. So the Royal
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: Fleet fleet arrives in and Coultree, the Kira and Brand
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: have to quickly hide Redain as best as they can,
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: and so that way the royal officers, Captain Verrick and
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: his men don't suspect that she's there. The problem is, though,
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: that same old man is causing trouble again. And the
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: thing is is that he knew that they give the
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: villagers had brought Redain back in and he starts and
- 1:11:43Speaker 1: he starts spilling the beans. He's like, he starts building
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: the beans. He's like, oh, no, she was here. She
- 1:11:51Speaker 1: was here, the girl you're looking for, because the Royal
- 1:11:53Speaker 1: Fleet was looking for Redaine. Yeah, they were on orders
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: to track her down and find her. Yeah, all right,
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: and bring her back to the capital. But uh, the
- 1:12:10Speaker 1: thing is Veric, as our Captain Verrick, he actually knew Redained,
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: knew Redained from from before. In fact, they used to
- 1:12:17Speaker 1: be engaged to uh engaged to marry, but the two
- 1:12:22Speaker 1: of them it was for them, it was an arranged marriage,
- 1:12:24Speaker 1: and the two of them didn't really like click together,
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: so they had ended their their engagement. So while it
- 1:12:31Speaker 1: was mutual like still it's it's somewhat personal for them.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: And uh Vrek doesn't really want to hurt Redain. He's
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: just but he's gonna follow orders and do his job
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: to bring her back to the capital. Pila and the
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: others managed to hide Redain successfully and but because of
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: that old man's accusations, Varrek is forced to search the
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: the rest of the islands, and he ends up searching
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: Kila's cottage. But Kila manages to do a good job
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: of hiding everybody, in fact, hiding like both her spell
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: books and also hiding Redain. Because the way she hides
- 1:13:13Speaker 1: Redaine is could she asks these forest spirits, the tree spirits,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: to hide her, Yeah, because she remembered because she had
- 1:13:20Speaker 1: read a she had read that the that in his
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: throughout history, the forest spirits have caused mischief before, like
- 1:13:29Speaker 1: if you if you upset one, people have been known
- 1:13:32Speaker 1: to vanish without a trace, and in some cases they
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: do return, but they're just like, I have no idea
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: what happened. I just like they had no idea what happened.
- 1:13:41Speaker 1: So she, uh, she called the tree spirits and asked
- 1:13:45Speaker 1: them that they could hide Redain for her, and the
- 1:13:47Speaker 1: tree spirits were like the while they couldn't speak, they agreed,
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: and they basically what they did was they enveloped Redain
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: in their mists and then just vanished. So when Varic
- 1:14:01Speaker 1: and his officers search the area, they don't find her,
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: and they don't find anything suspicious, and Kila speaks to
- 1:14:09Speaker 1: Veric and convinces him that even like she was like,
- 1:14:14Speaker 1: she was like, well, I'm not saying that she was here,
- 1:14:16Speaker 1: but even if she was, do you really think she's
- 1:14:18Speaker 1: a threat? I mean, even if she was here, like like,
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: they do admit that a woman of her description did
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: come to the island, but they claim that she left.
- 1:14:27Speaker 2: M I mean, technically they're not lying.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: Yeah they weren't. Technically they weren't lying, but they realized.
- 1:14:35Speaker 1: But she's like, well, you know, I'm not saying she was,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: not saying she's still here, but I mean she really
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: that much of a threat. I mean, she just when
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: she came here, she did tell me that she wanted
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: a new She just wanted to start a new life.
- 1:14:49Speaker 1: She has no interest in being empress or like laying
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: claim to the to the throne, to the old throne,
- 1:14:57Speaker 1: all right, she doesn't want any of that. She just
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: wants to live her life. And like her subtle like her,
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: like just her subtlety was enough to convince Veric that no,
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: there's not She's well, she's not here. We don't have
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: to keep bothering you people. And the thing is is
- 1:15:13Speaker 1: that that old man that was causing problems was like
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: Verrick had made an offer that if someone reveals like
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: reveals Radaine like brings Dane Ford, you'll be like given
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: like a huge reward and you'll be taken back to
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: the capital too, to uh for like a chance of
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: a new life and like and also like all the
- 1:15:35Speaker 1: other riches and shit. And the old man thinking that
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: he had actually given up her. Dane had already packed
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: his stuff and was ready to leave. But when he
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: saw that nobody that Dane wasn't with them, he's like,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: this isn't very These people are hiding her blah, blah blah,
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: and they're all like, you're just a crazy, like bitter
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: old man who just causes nothing but trouble, period. And uh,
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: like they convinced Vereric to take the old man with
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: anyway because they are one. They they invoke a they
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: invoke a special law that basically states that that Royal
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: vessel is required is required to offer like safe passage
- 1:16:16Speaker 1: for certain people, especially if they fear reprisal, you know.
- 1:16:20Speaker 1: And since the old man had been causing a lot
- 1:16:22Speaker 1: of problems, there's a good causing a lot of problems,
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: and like levy false accusations at this point, I mean,
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: they're not kind of they're not really false, but in
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: this case, yeah, they were, Uh there's a chance he's
- 1:16:34Speaker 1: there's a chance that he would face reprisal from the community.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: So Virek was like, Okay, we'll take them, but you're not.
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: But this isn't a luxury vote. So you're gonna We're
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: gonna put your ass to work, damn.
- 1:16:46Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: So they leave, Ordaine is brought back out of hiding,
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: and everyone is now ready is now able to start
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: going back to their normal lives. And since Tila and
- 1:16:59Speaker 1: her new covenant begun working more on spellcraft. They finally
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: work together to come up with a way for the
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: UH for the Mr Horses to begin fouling again, and
- 1:17:12Speaker 1: Kila uses this, uses her remedies on her remedies for
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: the for the horses, and that's when she and Lauren
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: began to their relationships begin. Their relationship together begins, too,
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: begins to kindle. It's not like other romance stories where
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: like oh, by the end, oh, like halfway through the story,
- 1:17:36Speaker 1: they're like in each other's arms, they're making out, they're
- 1:17:39Speaker 1: having like this is definitely more of a slow kindle,
- 1:17:45Speaker 1: like Kilan is taking it. Kila is taking it slow,
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: all right. And when Dane showed up, Kilan had begun
- 1:17:54Speaker 1: to start feeling like like a sense of like I
- 1:17:56Speaker 1: don't want to say jealousy, but like this unfairness because
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: she starts thinking that Lauren is giving his attention to
- 1:18:03Speaker 1: this other woman, and she starts wondering, like, am I
- 1:18:06Speaker 1: the problem? Do I just push people away?
- 1:18:09Speaker 6: Like?
- 1:18:10Speaker 1: But Lauren really steps up and helps and he does
- 1:18:15Speaker 1: a lot to help Quila, especially when he helps her
- 1:18:19Speaker 1: hide the books. He also uh he also uses his
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: horses to help remove any evidence like uh, he actually
- 1:18:29Speaker 1: moved Kila's boat from the from the Hidden Cove because
- 1:18:33Speaker 1: the the book, the boat there was uh at was
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: would have been enough evidence to like, uh, what's the
- 1:18:43Speaker 1: word in diet uh or convict Quila of being from
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: the capitol because like she admits she was, she had
- 1:18:51Speaker 1: come from the capitol, but she had not told the
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: the soldiers that she had taken books from the library
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: to hide them.
- 1:18:57Speaker 2: Ah, are you telling like indictment or you're trying to like, yeah,
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: they're trying to like, oh, you're in hiding somewhere else
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: or taking you back to where you're from and we're
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: going to prosecute you.
- 1:19:12Speaker 1: D Yeah, would have been enough to indict her. And
- 1:19:16Speaker 1: but he helped. He helped hide the evidence. Lauren helped
- 1:19:20Speaker 1: hide the evidence, and uh, she starts realizing that she
- 1:19:24Speaker 1: does she is having she does have feelings for him,
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: and like things begin to between the two of them
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: begin to become more serious, especially after she helps use
- 1:19:36Speaker 1: the remedies on the Murr horses so they can begin fouling.
- 1:19:40Speaker 1: And the book ends with a little bit of a
- 1:19:43Speaker 1: time skit because it like a few months after everything happens,
- 1:19:48Speaker 1: most of his heard is now pregnant with foul and
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: she actually helps them give birth because the thing about
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: the Mr Horses is that you need a spell in
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: order for them to be to be able to conceive,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: and then you need a spell in order to help
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: in order for them to be able to give birth.
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: So having horses is like a full time job. And
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: the only way for them to breed is with magic. Yeah,
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: breed and give birth is with magic. And by this point,
- 1:20:21Speaker 1: Lauren and Kila have started their relationship together. They're taking
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: it slow and it you know, they actually are showing
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: that they care for each other. And they're still living
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: like they're still living in their own homes, but they
- 1:20:35Speaker 1: spend more and more time with each other every day.
- 1:20:38Speaker 1: And Kila's little shop is taken off. Her remedies are
- 1:20:41Speaker 1: becoming have expanded, and she's also added a few more
- 1:20:45Speaker 1: recipes of a few more jam recipes too, because it's
- 1:20:51Speaker 1: still a front she still has. The jam Shop is
- 1:20:54Speaker 1: still a front for the spell Shop, and which is
- 1:20:59Speaker 1: so this story is really cute because it's showing that
- 1:21:01Speaker 1: like it's the start of a new form of like
- 1:21:05Speaker 1: kind of like it's the start of the return of
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: hedge magic, like people are now it's showing that like
- 1:21:11Speaker 1: she's bringing back magic for every day use, and what
- 1:21:14Speaker 1: are you doing with your cat?
- 1:21:16Speaker 3: I'm looking.
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: I'm looking at her tail because she she has a
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: bald spot on her tail because she's been ripping out
- 1:21:23Speaker 2: her hair, and I'm trying to look at it to
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: make sure that it's like, no, like she hasn't ripped
- 1:21:29Speaker 2: skin or anything like that, because she has a lot
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: of randomly, she's been getting a lot of like you know,
- 1:21:34Speaker 2: pulling out her hair on her tail, or she has
- 1:21:36Speaker 2: like scabs around her neck. But I think that's more
- 1:21:40Speaker 2: so for the fact of because the color is really
- 1:21:42Speaker 2: loose on her now since she lost some weight. But
- 1:21:45Speaker 2: I think she's rubbing up against stuff, certain stuff or
- 1:21:49Speaker 2: or I guess sharper stuff or whatnot, and she's like
- 1:21:52Speaker 2: scratching her neck. So I'm just trying to keep it
- 1:21:55Speaker 2: eye on her because of course I think she's stressed
- 1:21:57Speaker 2: because I don't feed her as much anymore, or we
- 1:21:59Speaker 2: try to contray her feeding, so she's probably We figure
- 1:22:02Speaker 2: she's probably stressing, so that's why she's pulling her hair
- 1:22:05Speaker 2: out on her tail, and.
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: We're like, like, I can't be a chalk.
- 1:22:11Speaker 2: Anymore, even though I even though I feed her like
- 1:22:14Speaker 2: every every couple hours, I feed her a little a
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: little bit, and she basically gets the same amount, but
- 1:22:22Speaker 2: it's just not all at once because she ends up
- 1:22:25Speaker 2: throwing up. And we're trying to get her to lose
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: some weight, and she's already lost some weight. She's lost
- 1:22:29Speaker 2: like I think she's like eleven pounds, but originally she
- 1:22:32Speaker 2: was like fifteen or sixteen pounds. She lost some weight,
- 1:22:36Speaker 2: but I think we're stressing her out. And I'm just like, girl,
- 1:22:41Speaker 2: you can't be you can't be overweight like that. We've
- 1:22:44Speaker 2: got to control You're eating a little bit, baby, and
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: you're throwing up everywhere. We've eat too much, honey. She'll eat,
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: she'll swallow it and then a few second a few
- 1:22:54Speaker 2: minutes later, yeah, projectile. And I'm like, baby, you're eating
- 1:22:58Speaker 2: too quickly. You're he can't digest it like that speedy,
- 1:23:03Speaker 2: honey mama. And she's complaining because she's just she's just
- 1:23:10Speaker 2: complaining now I hear him, y allen.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Anyway, Well, in any case, I'm sorry about that.
- 1:23:22Speaker 1: But going back to the story, I kind of got
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: out a little ahead of myself. So after so going
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: back before, so just going back a bit, uh when
- 1:23:32Speaker 1: when Captain Verrick and his crew leave, there are another
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: spell storm sweeps in and the problem is is that
- 1:23:42Speaker 1: like the villagers had tried to warn Barrick that the
- 1:23:44Speaker 1: storm was coming, but he was like, yeah, we're fine,
- 1:23:47Speaker 1: like his crew. Like, the thing is is that because
- 1:23:50Speaker 1: a lot this the Royal Fleet tends to stay closer
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: to the center islands, and when they're in the center islands,
- 1:23:59Speaker 1: they have plenty of windss to like cast spells to
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: regulate the weather. But here in the outer islands, they
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: we don't have they don't have that there. So they're
- 1:24:08Speaker 1: like we'll be fine, Like, well, that doesn't get that bad,
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: and they leave and then there's really hardcore spell storm
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: sweeps in and their ship almost gets completely drowned. But
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: Quila manages to rally rally her coven together like she
- 1:24:24Speaker 1: was taking shelter in her She and Lauren were taking
- 1:24:28Speaker 1: shelter in there in the cottage. But when she sees
- 1:24:31Speaker 1: the storm sweep in, they realize, oh, they're gonna they're
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: gonna die. So they run down to the bake bake
- 1:24:38Speaker 1: shop and tell Brenda, gather the other uh, the other
- 1:24:40Speaker 1: members of her of their little coven, including Redaine and Uh.
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: After doing some quick practice uh Kira Quila leads them
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: all in a new in the spell that she wanted
- 1:24:52Speaker 1: to use to to help regulate the weather. They managed
- 1:24:55Speaker 1: to do it successfully and the storm ends. In fact,
- 1:25:00Speaker 1: it completely like it completely neutralizes the magic in the
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: atmosphere to like bring it back to normal conditions. Now,
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: of course, like if things like this happen again, they'll
- 1:25:10Speaker 1: probably have to use that kind of magic again. But
- 1:25:16Speaker 1: they saved the vote. They saved the vote, and Virek realized.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: Verk ends up coming back to the island to determine
- 1:25:23Speaker 1: who casts the spell because he's still somewhat operating under
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: the old laws of the Empire or like no un
- 1:25:32Speaker 1: no unregulated magic like unlicensed magic, right, But Kila convinces
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: him that it's not necessary. She tells him a lot.
- 1:25:41Speaker 1: She's like, well, I don't know casts a spell. I mean,
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: that's kind of weird, but I mean things are different.
- 1:25:50Speaker 1: The empire is gone, the Emperor is gone, okay, and
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: we people out here don't have what you have. We
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: don't have sorcerers who can regulate the weather for us,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: all right. The Emperor took that all away from us,
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: so we have to. So I don't know who did it.
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: I don't know who did it, but we have no
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: choice but to do it. And Rek is like, you
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: know what, I don't care. I don't care about like,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: you know what, don't matter, not my problem. It's not
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: my problem anymore. You got the emperor is gone. The
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: new government is still setting itself up, and most likely
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: they're going to get rid of those old laws. So
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: and you guys aren't like you ended. You saved whoever
- 1:26:37Speaker 1: did it. They saved our lives.
- 1:26:38Speaker 2: So m bye, bit bye.
- 1:26:44Speaker 1: So it's after this that it's after this that like
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: they start going on with their lives. Uh, Quila, Quila
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: and Lawrence spend more time with each other. Their relationship
- 1:26:54Speaker 1: begins to grow. And Quila and then of course Kila
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: helps Lauren with helps Lauren's horses uh to conceive using
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: her magic, and later she comes back, like months later,
- 1:27:07Speaker 1: she comes back and helps them with the fouling process.
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: And it's around this time, like they've spent like weeks,
- 1:27:15Speaker 1: they've spent like several months together by this point, and
- 1:27:18Speaker 1: the relationship has grown very strong, and uh it's at
- 1:27:22Speaker 1: that point that uh Lauren asks Kila to marry him. Yeah,
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: and that's where the story ends. Now there's, of course
- 1:27:33Speaker 1: there's some details I didn't really go into, uh there,
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: because of course, you know, I can't go into all
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: the details. You guys got to read the book, all right.
- 1:27:42Speaker 1: So I definitely would say this is this is a
- 1:27:44Speaker 1: good read. It's a cozy read, all right, if you
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: want it, if you want to take a break from
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: like just like the like the normal like you know,
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: smutty or like violent or action packed type of novels,
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: because that's what I read a lot of those. I
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: read a lot of a lot of like action packs
- 1:28:03Speaker 1: books or books with a lot of fantasy vibes that
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: tend to be more serious. But this one it's cozy.
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: It's not very serious. It's very PG all right. It's
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: like I wouldn't say it's like Disney, if Disney was
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: a book, but all right, it's like if D and
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: D did. It's like D and D. But if D
- 1:28:25Speaker 1: and D was like a lo fi on like a
- 1:28:28Speaker 1: low fi little setting.
- 1:28:30Speaker 2: Mixed lo fi D and D and Animal crossing. M
- 1:28:34Speaker 2: h the vibes of Amil crossing just playing a plot
- 1:28:37Speaker 2: and stir it mm hmm.
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: Because you sut like starting the pot, don't you Well,
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: I sure do.
- 1:28:43Speaker 2: M nam Bolina shut up.
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: Anyway, guys, that was The spell Shop. Uh, if you
- 1:28:55Speaker 1: definitely definitely check it out. I enjoyed it. This is
- 1:28:59Speaker 1: like the first in a series like, uh, this is
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: definitely it's more of like many romances. It's a it's
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: an anthology series. So uh. There. There's one other book
- 1:29:10Speaker 1: in this series called The Enchance in Greenhouse. I have
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: not read that one yet, but from what I know,
- 1:29:16Speaker 1: it's actually going to be telling. It's going to be
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: from the perspective of Kaz's creator. So the so the
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: librarian that cast a spell that brought Cas to life. Uh,
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: it's actually going to be centered around her.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: Oh that's going about to talk about someday in the future,
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: in the future.
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: I haven't read it yet because I have a huge
- 1:29:41Speaker 1: I have a huge list of books to read, Like
- 1:29:43Speaker 1: I managed to like kill like the reading lists and
- 1:29:46Speaker 1: the books that I bought last year in the year before,
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: and then Christmas and my birthday.
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: Came along and I got more books, and I also
- 1:29:54Speaker 6: like decided I wanted to start a new book series,
- 1:29:57Speaker 6: start reading a new book series that I felt I
- 1:30:01Speaker 6: bought the first book last year.
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: It's called Bewarded Man by Peter Uh by Peter Brett.
- 1:30:09Speaker 3: It's the first book.
- 1:30:10Speaker 1: In the Demon Cycle, and I realized, like, hey, this
- 1:30:13Speaker 1: book is lit, so I'm gonna read this now. And
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: at the same time, I'm trying to read The Court
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: of Thorns and uh a Court of Thorns and Roses
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: because a friend of mine Yeah, yeah, yeah, a friend
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: of ours was bugging both of us to read it
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: because it's it's currently their favorite book. And I was like, okay, fine,
- 1:30:38Speaker 1: I'll read it. Like I was like, yeah, it's on
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: my list, but i'll read it eventually. And then she
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: and several other friends present company included bought me the
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: first three books in that series, and I was like, okay, fine,
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: i'll read it.
- 1:30:51Speaker 2: Well, we'll talk about that at some point this year too,
- 1:30:53Speaker 2: because I'm gonna listen to the audiobook of that, but
- 1:30:55Speaker 2: that's I'll be further down the line of this year
- 1:30:58Speaker 2: probably most likes.
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: Yeah, right now, I'm trying to finish the first book
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: and then I'll get around to like the next the
- 1:31:07Speaker 1: other two books, but I want to, like, I want
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: to start finishing the demon Cycle because demon Cycle it's
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: already a completed series.
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: And also the like if you get the softcover books,
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: if you put if you line them all together, the
- 1:31:19Speaker 1: spine of the books have like a decal on them.
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: If you have the books to each other, they create
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: a bigger image. So that's what caught my attention the
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: first time because I was in Barnes and Noble was
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: looking through their uh, their their fantasy section, and I
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: see all the books together and I see like these
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: rows of like demons on the spine, and I was like,
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: what is this? And I pull up the first book
- 1:31:41Speaker 1: and I'm like The Warded Man what I'm reading? And
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: I'm like, this is interesting. I'm want to read this.
- 1:31:49Speaker 2: How many books are in it?
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: There's currently five? Let me look five. I think it's
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: completed on I have all my book listen, I have
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: all my Amazon lists. Now there are five books in
- 1:32:06Speaker 1: the series work and I let me see this is
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: the yeah, book five of five. There's only five in
- 1:32:21Speaker 1: the series, so it is completed. It is a completed series.
- 1:32:24Speaker 1: The first book is called The worded Man. The next one,
- 1:32:27Speaker 1: when I'm planning on reading after I finish Akatar is
- 1:32:30Speaker 1: The Desert Spear and then there's the Daylight War, the
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: Skull Throne, and then the and then the Core. Yeah,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: I'm really excited to read this series because I started
- 1:32:40Speaker 1: reading it and it's an interesting take on like demons
- 1:32:43Speaker 1: because they're not like demons associated with like Hell or
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: like the underworld. They're not like yokai or like they're
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: definitely like inspired by like Western demons, but they're like
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: they're more like I would say, there's something like a fungus.
- 1:33:03Speaker 1: They kind of remind me of that because like there's
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: different demons and they're different. Ah, there's different demon types
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: of demons, like there's rock demons, there's wood demons, sand demons,
- 1:33:16Speaker 1: like wind demons, fire demons. And the thing is is
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: that every night they rise up from someplace called the Core,
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: and so throughout the night they attack any live they
- 1:33:30Speaker 1: attack any living thing. They mainly it's notack humans, and
- 1:33:33Speaker 1: humans had to learn how to defend themselves by using
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: these special kind of magical wards. So they paint these
- 1:33:41Speaker 1: wards around their settlements and on their and on their houses,
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: and the wards keep the demons from being able to
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: enter their houses. The problem is is that sometimes wards
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: fail because either the paint that they were used to
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: that was used to create them chips or they draw
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: it in like chalk or char or graphite, and like
- 1:34:02Speaker 1: someone accidentally like steps on them, or if you even
- 1:34:05Speaker 1: cover them, then it'll break the protection and the demons
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: will come in and like get you. So I was
- 1:34:11Speaker 1: just like, oh, this is brutal.
- 1:34:12Speaker 2: It sounds like demons mix with elementals.
- 1:34:16Speaker 1: Yeah, And I feel like there's a bit of a
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: Fay aspect to them because like the the idea of
- 1:34:20Speaker 1: a core, because like they come from a place called
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: the Core, and as far as like everyone's concerned, the
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: core is like down like somewhere underground. Because when the
- 1:34:33Speaker 1: demons come up every night, they rise up out of
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: the earth and like a like an ethereal mist before
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: solidifying into their physical form.
- 1:34:42Speaker 2: Interesting.
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: So I was reading and I'm like, huh, the thing
- 1:34:46Speaker 1: is people don't know how to fight demons because demons
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: are immortal, and I mean it's possible, it's possible to
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: kill them, it's very difficult because their skin is very tough,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: so regular weapons don't really hurt them. But there were
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: low but there they have like, uh, there's like a
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: myth that in ancient times humans used to be able
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: to fight them using like special special wards that allow
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: them to kill demons, but those wards have been lost,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: and there was like a time period where like a
- 1:35:19Speaker 1: solid three thousand years where humanity, like like the they
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: thought that they defeated demon kind because demons stopped coming
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: out every night and humans were able to advance, and
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: they forgot how to use the wards because like, okay,
- 1:35:33Speaker 1: well there's no demons to use the wards on. So
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: they lost their knowledge of like the of the attack
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: wards and even some of the defense the defense of lores,
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: the defensive wards, and there was an age where like
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: there it came an age of science. Then the demons
- 1:35:49Speaker 1: came back, and well their science wasn't enough to defeat
- 1:35:53Speaker 1: the demons, so like society collapsed and having and doing
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: their best, and everyone was like doing their best to
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: try to find a way to like defend themselves, and
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: scholars like looked into like ancient myths about the demons
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: and was like, huh, we got these words. So they
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: started using the words again, and they're like, all right, cool,
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: the words can can stop the demons, but they didn't
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: have they didn't have access to the to the attack words.
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: It's all they can do is just just put up
- 1:36:20Speaker 1: barriers every night to keep the demons out. So it's
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: an interesting It was interesting reading it. I was like, huh,
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: this is lit it. But if I'm gonna read the
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: whole I'm gonna go ahead and read the whole series
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: because right now I'm I'm like waiting for the next
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: not for the next book and the Dungeon Crawler series
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: to come out, and that's not coming out on until May. Yeah,
- 1:36:41Speaker 1: the rate of horribles. And also I got a Gatar
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: to read.
- 1:36:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and I had like.
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: A whole line of books on my shelf over here
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: now that I got to read, Like, I already read
- 1:36:54Speaker 1: some of the graphic novels I've gotten. I've read the
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: horror finally.
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: Mm hmmm.
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: I'm believe on the Red Rising series because I got
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: the first, but I'm just like, well, I found a series,
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: another series that I want to finish read first.
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: I need to tackle this monster ghost Michelle one two
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: and three or one one one point two and no
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: sorry one one and a half and then two because
- 1:37:27Speaker 2: future episode we're doing, I'm doing a two part episode
- 1:37:30Speaker 2: where I'm going to be talking about the manga the
- 1:37:32Speaker 2: og of Ghost Michelle and its two sequels, and then
- 1:37:37Speaker 2: another episode talking about the animated movie and the live
- 1:37:41Speaker 2: action movie and comparing it an old school episode and
- 1:37:45Speaker 2: literally Book Watchers old school episode style episode where we
- 1:37:49Speaker 2: where where one of us talks about book and then
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: we talk about the actual film material that goes along
- 1:37:55Speaker 2: with it. So we're gonna get a traditional episode here soon.
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: We're actually well, we're actually going to get a traditional
- 1:38:03Speaker 1: episode with the next episode because after today we finished.
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: So today we finished the The spell Shop. The next
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: episode we are going to be talking about H. G.
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Wells the War of the Worlds.
- 1:38:13Speaker 2: Yes, that is true. That is true too.
- 1:38:18Speaker 1: So until bank, guys, we'll go ahead and leave that here.
- 1:38:21Speaker 1: If you want to read The spell Shop, you can
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: get any bookstore. It's currently it's a very popular pick
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: at Barnes and Noble, and you can of course get
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: off of any places that you typically get books from Amazon,
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: like your local bookstore, the library.
- 1:38:36Speaker 2: Always Amazon, I mean, we love Amazon. I get books
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: from Amazon. But if you can get your book, if
- 1:38:43Speaker 2: you can get a book from a local bookstore or
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: a Barnes and Noble, that's the only books. So you
- 1:38:48Speaker 2: have get it from the source because Barnes and Nobles.
- 1:38:52Speaker 2: That's the last big bookstore chain saw out of the
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: smaller bookstores. If you've got a small bookstore, support your
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: small books or local bookstore. Millions around not down here.
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: There's one in Houston.
- 1:39:05Speaker 2: Yeah, there's one certain parts of the country, like if
- 1:39:08Speaker 2: you go like North Texas or in Houston, they have them,
- 1:39:11Speaker 2: but like around but around, they're not spread out throughout
- 1:39:14Speaker 2: the country anymore, I don't think.
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:39:17Speaker 2: Unfortunately, Yes, they had some good manga back in the day. Oh,
- 1:39:24Speaker 2: I love the one that the mall, one of the
- 1:39:27Speaker 2: malls here in town. I used to go there all
- 1:39:28Speaker 2: the time. And then it died, and then Borders died,
- 1:39:31Speaker 2: and I was like I'm crying inside.
- 1:39:33Speaker 1: And then Barnes and Noble Borders and then like Books
- 1:39:37Speaker 1: a Million others what they had Books a million here
- 1:39:41Speaker 1: in town and then they closed it. I think like
- 1:39:44Speaker 1: the Books a Million was like right there where the
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: It was right next to the best.
- 1:39:49Speaker 2: Buy, it was right next to the one one sixteen
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: oh four in Culebra. It was right down the road
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: from the Target. It was right pass like a few
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: stores down.
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: Yeah, and then those books then that place closed, and
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: then like Barnes and Noble has been around, Like this
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: is like one of the few holdouts at least in
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: our areas because like there's there's like I don't know
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: how many Barnes and Nobles are in San Antinio. It's
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: very popular here.
- 1:40:21Speaker 2: There's a lot and a lot of local bookstores here too.
- 1:40:26Speaker 1: Yeah, there are there. I've been trying to like find
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: them and like visit them. Like there's one, there's several downtown,
- 1:40:32Speaker 1: and then we have a we have a used book
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: chain called half Price Half Priced Bookstore, so people can
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: go sell their old books there and you can also
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: buy all books, like books are no longer in circulation
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: or like hard to find books. There used to be
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: one in our downtown area that was really nice, but
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: they closed that one, and I'm mad about that. So
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: there's only as far as I remember, As far as
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: I can remember, there's only two others that are still open.
- 1:40:58Speaker 2: Yeah, there's one on band Era in sixteen oh four.
- 1:41:01Speaker 3: And then the other one there's one.
- 1:41:03Speaker 2: On Yes, there's well, actually I think there's three now
- 1:41:09Speaker 2: because there's also another one near North s armon Le's
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: that is the one, yeah forever, and then.
- 1:41:14Speaker 1: It's very it's funny that they put up. They have
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: that one there because it's Barnes and Noble like right next.
- 1:41:18Speaker 2: To it, literally like right like literally within a two
- 1:41:21Speaker 2: minute walk.
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: And there's two other bookstores downtown, Like one is called
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: Nowhere Books.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: And I love that place, love it.
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: It's so cute. It's a tiny little bookstore, but it's cute.
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: And then there's another one further down the street, like
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: closer to the center of downtown called Pandora Books. That one,
- 1:41:38Speaker 1: that one has the witchy vibes. I think you have
- 1:41:40Speaker 1: you and Johnny went there.
- 1:41:41Speaker 3: It's off away.
- 1:41:42Speaker 2: Oh yea, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, we have. We happened
- 1:41:44Speaker 2: to that one. I happened to that one.
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: But there's another one in that area that like I
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: recently learned about it.
- 1:41:49Speaker 2: I was like, there's another one, which one.
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: I forgot the name, but it's like it's there. I
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: gotta look it up again.
- 1:41:58Speaker 2: I know there's one also downtown. It's the Horror Uhoulish
- 1:42:05Speaker 2: Gulish Books. The thing is what it's called.
- 1:42:07Speaker 3: I'll go today.
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: I got nothing else to do.
- 1:42:10Speaker 3: I'll go today.
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: Say like you're you're busy with your march, I'm going
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: downtown to I got it. I don't know where it's
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: Martin Luther King day here in the US, but like
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: and there's like a march for Martin Luther King and
- 1:42:23Speaker 1: send me the link for that place again because I.
- 1:42:25Speaker 2: Really like yeah, yeah, yeah, coolish books. They're also a publish,
- 1:42:32Speaker 2: a little publisher as well. Like they've done a lot
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: of release a lot of extreme they like to release
- 1:42:40Speaker 2: a lot of extreme horror and some of the some
- 1:42:43Speaker 2: of the more well known ones were released by them.
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: I dame, we know that. And then at some point
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: I'm sure for I Pride Month, I might I got
- 1:42:51Speaker 2: a book from them called Bound in Flesh and Anthology
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: of trans Body Horror, and I'm like, I want this,
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: so Prime month anyways. Uh but yeah, So we got
- 1:43:07Speaker 2: stuff planned as of right now, I have episodes planned
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: and listed and ready to go, not ready to go
- 1:43:13Speaker 2: as far as posting. We haven't recorded them yet.
- 1:43:17Speaker 1: We still got to record them. But we got we
- 1:43:19Speaker 1: we got got list, we got we're going to go over.
- 1:43:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I have a list, said, I have a listed
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: up through April. Mhm on what we got planned on
- 1:43:30Speaker 2: some of the stuff that we've talked about that you
- 1:43:32Speaker 2: want to do, and then some stuff I want to do,
- 1:43:34Speaker 2: so yeah yeah, and then pro and then May and Pride.
- 1:43:38Speaker 2: I'll work about that later anyways, but thank you all
- 1:43:40Speaker 2: for listening to say that, because next time I just
- 1:43:42Speaker 2: talk about another book. Until then, bye, I
