- 0:15Welcome to the Financial Feminism podcast.
- 0:19I'm Dr. Tanika Bruce.
- 0:21Each week, we have honest conversations about ownership,
- 0:25income, freedom, and building a future that can't
- 0:29be taken away by someone else's decisions.
- 0:32Let's get started.
- 0:34I'm Dr. Tanika Bruce.
- 0:36And before we talk about money, investing, entrepreneurship,
- 0:42marketing, side hustles, retirement plans, business growth, or
- 0:47any of the things you might expect from
- 0:50a podcast like this, I think we need
- 0:52to start somewhere else.
- 0:55We need to start with a conversation that
- 0:57most women never get the opportunity to have.
- 1:02A conversation about ownership.
- 1:05Because for most of our lives, we've been
- 1:08taught a very specific formula.
- 1:11Go to school, get the degree, get the
- 1:14other degree, work hard, stay loyal, be dependable,
- 1:19take care of everyone else around you.
- 1:22Keep your head down and do good work
- 1:25and everything will work out.
- 1:28Now for some women, it did.
- 1:31But for many women, it didn't.
- 1:34And what I've discovered over the years is
- 1:36that some of the most intelligent, capable, hardworking
- 1:40women I know are also some of the
- 1:43most financially anxious.
- 1:45Not because they're irresponsible, and not because they
- 1:49aren't successful, not because they aren't even working
- 1:53hard, but because they were taught how to
- 1:55earn.
- 1:56But nobody taught them how to own.
- 2:00And that's why financial feminism exists.
- 2:05Now, before we go any further, I need
- 2:08to tell you something.
- 2:10I didn't create financial feminism because I had
- 2:13everything figured out.
- 2:14Quite the opposite.
- 2:16I didn't create it because I woke up
- 2:19one day and decided, hey, I want to
- 2:21be this financial expert.
- 2:23I created it because I kept seeing the
- 2:26same pattern over and over again.
- 2:30Not only in myself, but I would meet
- 2:33brilliant women, women with degrees and women leading
- 2:38organizations and raising children, caring for aging parents,
- 2:44running ministries, carrying entire families on their backs.
- 2:49And they were also women that everyone depended
- 2:53on.
- 2:55And behind closed doors, many of those same
- 2:58women were worried.
- 3:00Worried about money, worried about retirement, worried about
- 3:05what would happen if life changed, worried about
- 3:09what would happen if the paycheck stopped, or
- 3:14if the relationship changed, worried about what would
- 3:18happen if they simply wanted something different.
- 3:22And I realized something.
- 3:24No one was having the conversation we actually
- 3:27needed.
- 3:28Everyone was teaching budgeting and no one was
- 3:32teaching ownership.
- 3:34You know, everyone was talking about income, but
- 3:37no one talked about power.
- 3:40And everyone talked about surviving, but very few
- 3:44people were talking about creating options.
- 3:48And options change everything.
- 3:51So let me ask you a question.
- 3:54What would happen if your primary source of
- 3:57income disappeared tomorrow?
- 4:00No, not next year, not when you're ready.
- 4:03Tomorrow.
- 4:04Would you panic?
- 4:05Would you have a plan?
- 4:07Would you know your next move?
- 4:09Would your life change immediately?
- 4:12You know, most women never ask themselves this
- 4:15question.
- 4:16Not because they're irresponsible, but because life is
- 4:21busy.
- 4:22We're working.
- 4:24We're building.
- 4:25We're serving.
- 4:27We're caregiving.
- 4:29And we're solving problems.
- 4:31We're helping everyone else.
- 4:34And somewhere along the way, many women never
- 4:37get the opportunity to build something of their
- 4:40own.
- 4:41Not because they didn't want to, but because
- 4:45no one taught them that ownership matters just
- 4:48as much as income.
- 4:50This episode is presented by the Financial Feminism
- 4:54Circle, a weekly community of women building more
- 4:57ownership, more competence, more income and more options.
- 5:03Join us every Thursday at 8pm Eastern Standard
- 5:06Time.
- 5:07Details are in the show notes.
- 5:09This episode is also presented by the Financial
- 5:13Freedom Scorecard.
- 5:14In just a few minutes, you'll discover where
- 5:17you are today and identify practical steps towards
- 5:21greater ownership and financial confidence.

- 5:27show notes.
- 5:29Now let me tell you something that should
- 5:31make every woman pause.
- 5:34There are women listening to this podcast right
- 5:37now whose mothers are were alive when women
- 5:41couldn't access many financial tools without barriers or
- 5:45permission.
- 5:46Yes, you heard me.
- 5:48Women gaining independent access to credit is far
- 5:52more recent than many people realize.
- 5:55Think about that.
- 5:56Not ancient history, not hundred years ago, but
- 6:00living memory.
- 6:02For generations, women were excluded from conversations about
- 6:06money.
- 6:07They were excluded from property ownership.
- 6:11They were excluded from financial decision making, from
- 6:15investment opportunities, and also excluded from positions of
- 6:19economic influence.
- 6:21And here's why this matters.
- 6:22Because when people say, just invest, or just
- 6:25negotiate, or just start a business, they often
- 6:29ignore the fact that generations of women inherited
- 6:33financial beliefs that were shaped by systems that
- 6:36weren't even built with them in mind.
- 6:39The financial system wasn't originally designed around women's
- 6:44financial independence.
- 6:46That's not an opinion.
- 6:47It's history.
- 6:49And while we've made incredible progress here, some
- 6:52of those messages still show up today.
- 6:55Don't ask.
- 6:56Don't negotiate.
- 6:58Don't talk about money.
- 7:01Don't want too much.
- 7:03Don't make people uncomfortable.
- 7:06But silence has never created freedom.
- 7:10Now let's talk about something nobody seems to
- 7:14want to discuss.
- 7:15The middle class trap.
- 7:18Now I want you to picture somebody.
- 7:20Maybe it's you.
- 7:21Maybe it's someone you know.
- 7:23She earns good money.
- 7:25Maybe $75,000 a year.
- 7:27Maybe even $85,000.
- 7:29Maybe six figures.
- 7:31And she's got a respectable career.
- 7:34So people assume that she's doing fine.
- 7:38But she's exhausted.
- 7:40Too much income to qualify for help.
- 7:44Not enough wealth to create options.
- 7:47Paying full price for everything.
- 7:50Then helping family.
- 7:52Supporting children.
- 7:54Funding everyone else's future.
- 7:57And quietly wondering why she still feels stuck.
- 8:01She's working harder than ever.
- 8:04Yet somehow feels less secure.
- 8:07And maybe the question isn't why isn't she
- 8:09earning enough?
- 8:10Maybe the question is why has no one
- 8:13taught her the difference between income and ownership?
- 8:17Because income pays bills.
- 8:20Ownership creates options.
- 8:24Income helps you survive.
- 8:26Ownership helps you choose.
- 8:30Now there's another financial reality that women rarely
- 8:34discuss.
- 8:36The caregiver tax.
- 8:38No it's not a line item on a
- 8:40tax return.
- 8:42But women pay it every day.
- 8:44Women are more likely to take career breaks.
- 8:47More likely to reduce their hours.
- 8:50More likely to care for children or aging
- 8:52parents.
- 8:54And more likely to put someone else's needs
- 8:56ahead of their own financial future.
- 8:59And nobody puts that on a balance sheet.
- 9:03No one calculates the promotions that are missed
- 9:05or the retirement contributions that are lost.
- 9:09The opportunities that may be delayed or the
- 9:12dreams that are postponed.
- 9:14Yet the cost is real.
- 9:16And if you've ever felt financially just behind
- 9:20because life required you to care for others.
- 9:25Well I want you to hear this.
- 9:29You are not behind.
- 9:31You are not broken.
- 9:33And your story is not over.
- 9:36You know one of the ideas that you're
- 9:38going to hear me talk about often on
- 9:40this podcast is something I call the ownership
- 9:43gap.
- 9:44Not the wealth gap.
- 9:46Not the wage gap.
- 9:48Not the any other gap that people talk
- 9:51about most of the time.
- 9:52We are talking about the ownership gap.
- 9:56So ask yourself who owns the businesses?
- 10:00Who owns the audience?
- 10:03Who owns the systems?
- 10:05Who owns the investments?
- 10:08Who owns the intellectual property and the assets?
- 10:13Who owns the opportunities being created?
- 10:17Because ownership changes the conversation.
- 10:20A paycheck is valuable.
- 10:23A skill is valuable.
- 10:26A business is valuable.
- 10:28But ownership compounds.
- 10:32Ownership creates leverage.
- 10:35Ownership creates choices.
- 10:38And ownership creates freedom.
- 10:41And that is what financial feminism is really
- 10:45about.
- 10:46It's not about getting rich.
- 10:48It's not about chasing status or pretending that
- 10:51money solves every problem.
- 10:53Because it doesn't.
- 10:55It's about creating options.
- 10:58Now there's a reason why my book is
- 11:00called She Who Owns the Purse.
- 11:03Because history teaches us something powerful.
- 11:07When women own the purse, they own options.
- 11:12When women own the purse, they own choices.
- 11:16When women own the purse, they own influence.
- 11:21And when women own the purse, they help
- 11:24shape families, communities, and futures.
- 11:29See money isn't just about money.
- 11:32Money is about agency.
- 11:35And it's about choice.
- 11:37Money is about freedom.
- 11:39And money is about having the ability to
- 11:41say yes.
- 11:43And also having the ability to say no.
- 11:46And that's why financial feminism isn't simply about
- 11:50wealth.
- 11:51It's about power.
- 11:54Not power over people, but power over your
- 11:57own life.
- 11:59And before we finish today, I want to
- 12:02leave you with two questions.
- 12:05Number one, what do I currently own that
- 12:09creates opportunity?
- 12:12Maybe it's a skill.
- 12:14Maybe it's a certification.
- 12:17It could even be a business or a
- 12:20personal brand.
- 12:22Maybe it's a network.
- 12:24But it can also be your experience.
- 12:28Maybe it's even your knowledge.
- 12:30It could even be your story.
- 12:34The second question is, what am I building
- 12:37that can't be taken away by someone else's
- 12:41decision?
- 12:42Now I don't want you to judge your
- 12:44answers though.
- 12:45Just be honest.
- 12:47Awareness always comes before change.
- 12:51Thank you for spending time with me today.
- 12:53This is only the beginning.
- 12:55Every week we'll have honest conversations about money
- 12:59and ownership and leadership, careers, entrepreneurship, marketing, visibility,
- 13:08confidence, and building a future with more options.
- 13:13And if this episode resonated with you, subscribe
- 13:16to the podcast, share it with other women,
- 13:21leave a review, and join us every Thursday
- 13:24evening inside the Financial Feminism Circle.
- 13:28Because this podcast isn't about getting rich, it's
- 13:32about becoming harder to control.
- 13:35It's about becoming harder to silence or becoming
- 13:39harder to overlook.
- 13:41It's about creating options for yourself, for your
- 13:45family, and for the women coming behind you.
- 13:48Now remember this, financial freedom isn't about having
- 13:52more stuff.
- 13:53It's about having more options.
- 13:57If today's conversation helped you to think differently
- 14:00about ownership, income, or financial freedom, subscribe, share
- 14:06this episode with other women, and join us
- 14:09inside the financial feminism community.
- 14:12Remember, financial freedom isn't about having more stuff.
- 14:16It's about having more options.
- 14:18I'll see you next time.
- 14:28Financial feminism, more options, more ownership, more freedom.
