Speaker 2: Let's Talk is proudly presented by attorney Frank Walker. Real talk,

Speaker 2: real experience, real results. FrankWalkerLaw.com. Let the conversation begin on
• 0:35
  Speaker 2: Let's Talk.
• 0:37
Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
• 0:38
Speaker 4: This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk. I have only
• 0:44
Speaker 4: one of my co-hosts in the building right now, and
• 0:47
Speaker 4: that's Miss Lisa Odie, the football queen.
• 0:49
Speaker 5: The one that you always want to fire. Somehow I
• 0:53
Speaker 5: just keep showing back up.
• 0:55
  Speaker 2: Well.
• 0:55
Speaker 4: That's because I haven't officially fired you yet.
• 1:00
  Speaker 3: I'm just tempted.
• 1:01
Speaker 5: Oh, no, I know, right.
• 1:02
Speaker 3: I'm not firing you today because it's just me and you.
• 1:05
Speaker 5: Yeah, and just because your Vikings are undefeated. And my
• 1:08
Speaker 5: Packers did win yesterday.
• 1:10
Speaker 3: Oh, but you're not undefeated, though.
• 1:12
Speaker 5: Well, that's not what I was trying to communicate here.
• 1:16
Speaker 5: I'm communicating that we won a game.
• 1:18
Speaker 3: What is your record, though? What is the record?
• 1:21
Speaker 5: Let's move on, shall we?
• 1:22
Speaker 3: No, I'm just... That's part of the show, Matt, right?
• 1:26
  Speaker 6: Here's my question.
• 1:27
Speaker 3: Oh, here we go.
• 1:29
  Speaker 6: I don't have much voice, I'm sorry.
• 1:31
Speaker 7: If Carl had to talk for 55 minutes by himself.
• 1:36
Speaker 6: Could he do it?
• 1:37
Speaker 5: I think he could.
• 1:38
  Speaker 3: I don't know.
• 1:39
Speaker 7: If we just pushed record and walked away and came
• 1:42
Speaker 7: back in an hour.
• 1:43
  Speaker 5: You'd have a show.
• 1:44
Speaker 3: What would have happened?
• 1:45
Speaker 5: Now, whether it made sense or not and, you know,
• 1:49
Speaker 5: like had some real meat to it, that's a whole
• 1:53
  Speaker 5: different thing.
• 1:53
Speaker 6: I mean, would he have to debate himself?
• 1:55
Speaker 5: I guess he would.
• 1:59
Speaker 4: I would say my hardest thing is not firing Lisa.
• 2:02
Speaker 4: I wouldn't be able to fire her. She'd be already fired.
• 2:05
Speaker 6: You'd be out of people to fire you. You'd have
• 2:07
  Speaker 6: to fire yourself.
• 2:08
  Speaker 3: Exactly.
• 2:09
Speaker 5: As they say in the South, bless your heart. Bless
• 2:12
  Speaker 5: your heart.
• 2:13
Speaker 3: Whatever. It'll be all right. All right.
• 2:16
Speaker 4: So I want to say this before we even jump
• 2:24
  Speaker 4: into a topic.
• 2:25
  Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
• 2:27
Speaker 4: Am I the only one who thinks the NFL today
• 2:30
Speaker 4: is like it seems different, it feels different?
• 2:36
  Speaker 5: In what manner?
• 2:39
Speaker 4: Let's say, well, maybe just players. Just the things that
• 2:42
Speaker 4: you're hearing about particular players. Like they've done this or they're...
• 2:48
Speaker 4: I don't know. You mean accomplishments? Not accomplishments, but things
• 2:52
Speaker 4: that they're doing off the field.
• 2:54
  Speaker 5: Behaviors.
• 2:54
Speaker 3: Behaviors, types of things. I don't know if.
• 3:02
Speaker 4: Back in the day, as we say, if you did
• 3:06
Speaker 4: something like anything that would be notable in the media
• 3:11
Speaker 4: that is a bad thing, you're either fined. or suspended
• 3:16
Speaker 4: for a game or something. But I don't know if,
• 3:21
Speaker 4: even if you do something on the field, I'm not
• 3:23
Speaker 4: sure if I'm seeing actions taken for the consequences of
• 3:30
Speaker 4: things that are done.
• 3:31
Speaker 5: The right punishments distributed for things that are.
• 3:34
  Speaker 4: Yeah, I just don't see it. And I think that's
• 3:36
Speaker 4: one of the reasons why part of, I say older players,
• 3:42
Speaker 4: don't really have a desire to watch the game today.
• 3:49
Speaker 5: Because of what you're witnessing from the players?
• 3:51
Speaker 4: Yeah, because what you see from the players, the celebration
• 3:55
Speaker 4: of yourself on a play, and I know everybody celebrates,
• 4:01
Speaker 4: but I think the celebrations today are so solo, so
• 4:05
Speaker 4: about me, and nothing about the team, really.
• 4:10
Speaker 3: And it drives me crazy.
• 4:12
Speaker 5: You know, I think I'm going to boil it down
• 4:15
Speaker 5: to comparing, you know, back when you were in the
• 4:17
Speaker 5: NFL and to today's NFL. And I think the one
• 4:21
Speaker 5: word that comes to mind is, of course, money. And
• 4:24
Speaker 5: I think that at your time, during your time, there
• 4:28
Speaker 5: wasn't as many, and you can correct me if I'm wrong,
• 4:33
Speaker 5: the differences between pay and players, between the stars and
• 4:37
Speaker 5: the people that weren't, you know, that were on the
• 4:40
Speaker 5: second string, third string, were not as extreme as they
• 4:43
Speaker 5: are now. Am I right? Like there wasn't millions of
• 4:45
Speaker 5: dollars at stake if this star player was suspended for,
• 4:50
Speaker 5: you know, whatever they did in the past game or
• 4:53
Speaker 5: the present game. And so the investment is huge for
• 5:00
Speaker 5: these teams, and they are a little more lenient and
• 5:04
Speaker 5: willing to overlook some of these shenanigans because of their
• 5:07
Speaker 5: investments in these players. Because don't you feel like the
• 5:10
Speaker 5: ones you're talking about are your superstar players? Yes. That are,
• 5:15
Speaker 5: you know, getting out of line in whatever way, whether
• 5:18
Speaker 5: it's on the field or off the field. And so
• 5:20
Speaker 5: I feel like because of the money... you know, that
• 5:25
Speaker 5: that's on the line there, you know, you've got people
• 5:28
Speaker 5: coming into the stadium that want to see that these
• 5:30
Speaker 5: players play. They want to see the star players play.
• 5:32
Speaker 5: They don't want to see the backup players play.
• 5:33
  Speaker 3: That's true.
• 5:34
Speaker 5: And so whenever you have a player that probably did
• 5:37
Speaker 5: something that was deserving of, of maybe being suspended for
• 5:40
Speaker 5: a game or two, it's not going to happen because
• 5:43
Speaker 5: you're going to have some disgruntled fans.
• 5:45
Speaker 3: So are you, so.
• 5:47
Speaker 4: Are you saying to that, if I do something today, the, the,
• 5:54
Speaker 4: it's more likely you'll find me.
• 5:57
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 5:57
Speaker 3: Then you would, you know, say, okay, you're out for
• 6:02
  Speaker 3: three games.
• 6:02
  Speaker 5: Sure. I believe that's this.
• 6:05
Speaker 3: And four games without pay.
• 6:06
Speaker 4: Right. You know, cause that would have been the other thing.
• 6:08
Speaker 4: If you, if you got put out and you didn't play,
• 6:11
Speaker 4: you didn't get paid.
• 6:12
Speaker 5: Well, and that's the more severe fine than just being
• 6:15
Speaker 5: fined and being able to play.
• 6:16
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 6:17
Speaker 5: You see what I'm saying?
• 6:18
  Speaker 6: Yes, absolutely.
• 6:18
Speaker 5: And the fines are not as, you know, you think about,
• 6:21
Speaker 5: you hear these amounts, they're just a drop in the
• 6:24
Speaker 5: bucket compared to their salary. It's a slap on the wrist.
• 6:27
  Speaker 3: Yes, that's all.
• 6:29
Speaker 5: What do you think, Matt?
• 6:30
  Speaker 6: I think there's, I.
• 6:33
Speaker 7: Think some of this has to do with the shift
• 6:36
Speaker 7: from everything being on traditional media. to now you've got
• 6:41
Speaker 7: streaming services, now you've got online, social media platforms.
• 6:46
  Speaker 6: All that stuff.
• 6:47
Speaker 7: So it's like, to me, when I watch, it's like
• 6:53
Speaker 7: we're allowing more of this entertainment kind of, hey, look
• 6:57
Speaker 7: at me stuff that goes on on the field because
• 7:01
Speaker 7: it's like the league understands that we're trying to get
• 7:04
Speaker 7: as many viewers as possible.
• 7:06
  Speaker 3: Exactly.
• 7:06
Speaker 7: So we're going to let things happen that might help
• 7:08
Speaker 7: the algorithm. when somebody goes to find this later. I mean,
• 7:13
Speaker 7: it just kind of feels that same way to me.
• 7:17
Speaker 4: To your point, do we see the NFL being the
• 7:23
Speaker 4: most viewed, most want-to-see sport than any other sport? Would
• 7:34
Speaker 4: football be the number one sport for viewers today? If
• 7:37
Speaker 4: you said, what sport would you pick that you want
• 7:40
Speaker 4: to see, that you wouldn't want to watch?
• 7:42
Speaker 3: Is football the number one?
• 7:44
  Speaker 6: I would think.
• 7:44
Speaker 5: I think so, too. I mean, I know soccer is
• 7:47
Speaker 5: gaining some ground on traditional football.
• 7:50
Speaker 6: I mean, basketball is dropping in numbers.
• 7:53
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 7:54
Speaker 6: I mean, was it last season?
• 7:55
Speaker 7: I think they said the viewership for the NBA was
• 7:57
Speaker 7: down like 50% or something like that.
• 7:59
  Speaker 1: Again.
• 7:59
  Speaker 5: It's dropping again.
• 8:00
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 8:02
Speaker 3: We know that there's a person that's causing that, but
• 8:04
Speaker 3: I'm— Well— You can't blame that on one player. I
• 8:09
  Speaker 3: won't go there. I can't.
• 8:10
Speaker 6: I bet he was on a helicopter ride.
• 8:13
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 8:13
Speaker 6: I mean, I would think so.
• 8:15
Speaker 7: And that's the other thing, too, that the NFL worries
• 8:18
Speaker 7: me about, though, is they're moving to this system where
• 8:22
Speaker 7: you've got Monday night games, you've got Thursday night games,
• 8:25
Speaker 7: you've got Sunday games. And sometimes, like, Friday and Saturday
• 8:29
Speaker 7: are in play now as well. Right.
• 8:31
Speaker 6: Why did we get to that? There's only 32 teams.
• 8:34
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 8:36
Speaker 7: Why do we need five days a week to play football?
• 8:40
Speaker 4: I do think you can push it out as much
• 8:44
Speaker 4: as you want, but you can overdo it.
• 8:47
Speaker 3: Because people, I just don't think people want to, they
• 8:52
Speaker 3: don't want to be flooded with it.
• 8:54
Speaker 4: But again, okay, so it's a Packer game.
• 8:58
Speaker 3: You're going to watch it regardless.
• 9:00
Speaker 4: And I think that fan base, not that particular one,
• 9:03
Speaker 4: but just the fan base of football and your team,
• 9:07
  Speaker 4: if your team's.
• 9:07
Speaker 3: Playing, are you, you know.
• 9:09
Speaker 5: And that draws enough viewership, even if it's just the
• 9:11
Speaker 5: fan base of the two teams playing, unless they're, you know,
• 9:14
Speaker 5: two really, really bad teams.
• 9:16
Speaker 4: But those fans still will watch it.
• 9:18
Speaker 5: Yeah, they'll watch it.
• 9:19
  Speaker 6: You're right. Absolutely.
• 9:21
Speaker 5: And I like what Matt said about the algorithm because
• 9:23
Speaker 5: it reminds me of something my grandmother always told me
• 9:26
Speaker 5: when I was younger. Talk good about me, talk bad
• 9:28
Speaker 5: about me, but just talk about me. And so NFL,
• 9:32
Speaker 5: whether it's good publicity or, like you said, the bad publicity,
• 9:36
Speaker 5: it's still publicity. It still draws people in. They still
• 9:40
Speaker 5: are curious. They want to see, you know, what did
• 9:42
Speaker 5: that player do to deserve that fine? And so, you know,
• 9:46
Speaker 5: you're right. The social media mix part of it has
• 9:48
Speaker 5: just– Change the face of the game and the way
• 9:51
  Speaker 5: we watch it.
• 9:52
Speaker 7: Because it used to be it was whatever was live
• 9:55
Speaker 7: on TV, whatever's live on the radio.
• 9:57
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 9:58
Speaker 6: And then after that, it's whatever TV. radio, and the.
• 10:01
Speaker 7: Newspapers decided were the stories they were going to pick
• 10:04
Speaker 7: up and talk about after game day.
• 10:06
  Speaker 5: After.
• 10:07
Speaker 7: Now, I mean, everybody's got a podcast, as we're sitting here.
• 10:12
  Speaker 7: Everybody's got a podcast. Everybody's got a YouTube channel.
• 10:14
  Speaker 3: You're right.
• 10:15
Speaker 7: So everybody's pulling different things and talking about stuff.
• 10:18
Speaker 5: I mean, it's and you can have here's another interesting
• 10:21
Speaker 5: part of this. You can have any argument, whether it's right, wrong,
• 10:25
Speaker 5: you know, up, down, whatever. And you can find some news,
• 10:29
Speaker 5: some some, like you said, podcasts. somebody, something, out where
• 10:32
Speaker 5: to support your argument, whether it's the right argument or
• 10:35
  Speaker 5: the wrong argument.
• 10:36
Speaker 3: And if you find one, you're sold. It only takes one.
• 10:40
Speaker 5: This is the truth. This is gospel.
• 10:42
Speaker 4: And if it's on television and I'm saying something and
• 10:47
Speaker 4: somebody says it on television, I'm locked.
• 10:51
Speaker 3: There's no way you can convince me that I'm not right.
• 10:53
  Speaker 5: I saw it.
• 10:54
Speaker 3: It must be true. I saw it on the internet.
• 10:56
Speaker 7: And this is the thing to go full circle to
• 10:58
Speaker 7: your first question. As individual as the content has become
• 11:02
Speaker 7: for us as the consumers, now you have all these
• 11:07
Speaker 7: individual actions from players out there just trying to, you know,
• 11:12
  Speaker 7: give you.
• 11:12
Speaker 3: There you go. And I really do.
• 11:14
Speaker 4: I really think that that push by the individual player
• 11:19
Speaker 4: to establish himself in a sense, separate from the team
• 11:24
Speaker 4: and quote solo and relevant to the fan base, to
• 11:29
Speaker 4: the public, to the media, all of those kinds of things.
• 11:35
Speaker 3: Is that for the reason to get paid?
• 11:39
Speaker 4: Because if you're that player, you've got the media, you
• 11:42
Speaker 4: got the attention, you got the fan base, You're a
• 11:47
Speaker 4: pretty good player, maybe not even the best player at
• 11:51
Speaker 4: your position, maybe not even the best player on your team,
• 11:54
Speaker 4: but you are one of them. But you're going to
• 11:56
Speaker 4: make tons and tons of money because of the relevance
• 12:01
Speaker 4: of what the media thinks about you.
• 12:04
Speaker 5: Well, I mean, and another thing, when social media kind
• 12:07
Speaker 5: of monetized, like you can monetize your content now. I mean,
• 12:11
Speaker 5: you think about the, you know, whatever these, excuse me,
• 12:14
Speaker 5: players throw out there, you know, for clicks. the more
• 12:17
Speaker 5: clicks they get, the more money they make. So that's
• 12:19
Speaker 5: just in addition to what they're making on the field.
• 12:21
Speaker 5: So for some players that aren't the star players, it's
• 12:25
Speaker 5: almost to their advantage to have some, you know, questionable
• 12:30
Speaker 5: behaviors on the field or off the field because then
• 12:33
Speaker 5: it draws in, like I said, good or bad, you're
• 12:35
Speaker 5: still getting the attention. And, you know, like I said,
• 12:38
Speaker 5: this world we live in today.
• 12:39
  Speaker 3: Attention is money.
• 12:40
Speaker 5: Yeah, attention is money.
• 12:41
  Speaker 3: There you go.
• 12:42
Speaker 7: It is. I like the fact that, especially, like, players
• 12:46
Speaker 7: like you, Sterling, Joe Montana. I think about Steve. I mean,
• 12:51
Speaker 7: like Troy Aikman, you go back in time. It's like
• 12:56
Speaker 7: players had an allegiance to the team that drafted them.
• 12:59
Speaker 7: And they, a lot of times stayed there. They may
• 13:01
Speaker 7: have wound up one or two other teams for the
• 13:03
Speaker 7: last couple of years, whatever. But, you know, when you
• 13:07
Speaker 7: used to think about teams, it wasn't just like that
• 13:09
Speaker 7: one or two star players. I mean, if you had
• 13:11
  Speaker 7: a favorite team, You could rattle off 8, 10, 12
• 13:14
Speaker 7: players on that roster because they were all there every
• 13:17
  Speaker 7: single year.
• 13:18
Speaker 5: Every single year, almost to retirement.
• 13:20
Speaker 4: And to your point about playing on one team, you
• 13:26
Speaker 4: could have never told me that I was not going
• 13:28
Speaker 4: to retire from the Vikings.
• 13:29
Speaker 6: You couldn't have. I believe it.
• 13:31
Speaker 4: And if I had not gotten cut, I would have–
• 13:35
Speaker 4: that was going to be my last season, and I
• 13:37
Speaker 4: would have stayed there. And what happens is, you know,
• 13:41
Speaker 4: whether it's money, whether it's whatever the case may be,
• 13:45
Speaker 4: they want to push you off. Back in the day,
• 13:47
Speaker 4: they'd push you off late in your career, and you'd
• 13:51
Speaker 4: go play somewhere else, and.
• 13:52
Speaker 3: You'd kind of have to start up.
• 13:52
Speaker 5: They still do that to a degree, don't they?
• 13:54
Speaker 6: They still do that. I feel like it's better than
• 13:56
Speaker 6: some of the other sports.
• 13:57
  Speaker 5: You're right. You're right.
• 13:58
Speaker 4: Maybe so, and– And I can say I'm still a
• 14:03
Speaker 4: little bit angry about my situation. You know, I feel
• 14:06
Speaker 4: like I don't know anybody else that the Vikings had
• 14:09
Speaker 4: done that to during my time. Now, that doesn't mean
• 14:13
  Speaker 4: that they didn't.
• 14:14
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 14:14
Speaker 4: But literally, you just did not want to even talk
• 14:20
Speaker 4: to me about a contract, you.
• 14:23
Speaker 3: Just, and then you wait.
• 14:26
Speaker 4: Then you wait until the very week of the camp,
• 14:31
Speaker 4: we're coming into camp, and you let me go. Why
• 14:34
Speaker 4: did you let me go at the end of the season?
• 14:35
Speaker 4: Why didn't you let me go mid-summer? You're letting me
• 14:38
Speaker 4: go while teams have already drafted players, having a week
• 14:44
Speaker 4: or so to look at them, and then you're going
• 14:47
Speaker 4: to let me go?
• 14:48
Speaker 3: You're not setting me up for success, for sure.
• 14:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, that's a tough spot to be in, I'm sure.
• 14:53
Speaker 4: And I think that old school actions from organizations like that,
• 15:00
Speaker 4: I think that's where a lot of players have their dislike.
• 15:06
Speaker 4: They end up with a dislike for the team or
• 15:08
Speaker 4: maybe even the owner that they played for. And mine
• 15:11
Speaker 4: is solely for the general manager role.
• 15:16
  Speaker 5: At the time.
• 15:17
  Speaker 3: At the time.
• 15:17
  Speaker 6: Right, right.
• 15:18
Speaker 4: You know, that was there. Mike Lynn, I'll give his name.
• 15:21
Speaker 4: And he was just a bad dude as a whole.
• 15:25
  Speaker 4: You should throw.
• 15:26
Speaker 5: A little shade here. I hope Mike Lynn's not listening
• 15:31
  Speaker 5: to the podcast.
• 15:32
Speaker 3: That's okay. Go ahead.
• 15:32
  Speaker 2: You know what?
• 15:33
Speaker 6: I hope he is. That's good.
• 15:37
Speaker 4: It was, no, I mean, he just, it was just
• 15:39
Speaker 4: one of those kind of situations where it was power.
• 15:42
Speaker 4: He enjoyed the power of you coming in as, quote,
• 15:46
  Speaker 4: a player who's had a great last season and you're
• 15:50
Speaker 4: ready to up your contract or your contract's up and
• 15:53
Speaker 4: you're ready to get paid.
• 15:55
Speaker 3: He's not trying to work with you. He's not on
• 15:58
  Speaker 3: that side.
• 15:58
Speaker 5: Was he hired for that specific purpose? Was he a
• 16:01
Speaker 5: hatchet man, so to speak?
• 16:02
Speaker 4: He ended up being, and I think he's passed anyway,
• 16:04
Speaker 4: but I think he originally was– like literally the top
• 16:11
Speaker 4: guy in the building other than the owners.
• 16:14
Speaker 3: He was like, and I think he was part owner.
• 16:17
Speaker 4: He was part of like, I think there were three
• 16:19
Speaker 4: or four different owners, but he was like in that deal.
• 16:24
Speaker 4: And so if you're the owner and you got a
• 16:26
Speaker 4: guy who's fighting to keep you, keep your money, you
• 16:31
Speaker 4: got nothing to say.
• 16:33
Speaker 3: And we have no access to you. You know, we
• 16:36
Speaker 3: have no access to the owners.
• 16:38
Speaker 4: Now, maybe today you hear and you see owners walking around.
• 16:44
Speaker 3: Players might know who they were. We didn't have that
• 16:46
  Speaker 3: luxury back then.
• 16:49
Speaker 5: They were just those people that showed up in the
• 16:51
Speaker 5: box on Sunday to watch you play.
• 16:52
Speaker 3: Yes, and you didn't see. Past judgment. Yes.
• 16:55
Speaker 7: That's because you didn't play for Dallas. If you'd been
• 16:57
Speaker 7: in Dallas, you would have seen Terry Jones every day.
• 17:00
  Speaker 3: Yes, yes.
• 17:01
Speaker 4: And that's the far side on the other end of
• 17:05
Speaker 4: it that you, like, dude, like, go sit in the
• 17:09
Speaker 4: box and watch the game.
• 17:12
Speaker 6: Well, have you seen this woman that's the owner of
• 17:14
Speaker 6: the Indianapolis Colts? No, no.
• 17:17
  Speaker 5: She's pretty hands-on, isn't she?
• 17:19
  Speaker 6: She's on the.
• 17:19
Speaker 7: Sidelines, like, talking game plan and stuff with folks.
• 17:22
Speaker 6: Oh, wow. You don't have to look into that.
• 17:25
  Speaker 3: I do.
• 17:27
Speaker 5: That's a good topic for a future reference. But, yeah,
• 17:30
Speaker 5: I think that just, I want to say this, and
• 17:33
Speaker 5: I don't want Carl to think, you know, to get too,
• 17:37
  Speaker 5: his ego inflated.
• 17:38
Speaker 6: You're about to get fired.
• 17:39
Speaker 5: But, you know, I think there was an air of class.
• 17:43
Speaker 5: And I don't want to say this generation's classless. But
• 17:46
Speaker 5: back then, they just carried themselves differently. Maybe it was
• 17:50
Speaker 5: the lack of, like you said, media that we have today.
• 17:53
Speaker 5: You're on camera 24-7 when you're any type of celebrity, athlete, actor, actress,
• 18:00
Speaker 5: whatever it is. But during that time, they just, I
• 18:05
Speaker 5: don't know, they carried themselves differently. It was a whole
• 18:08
Speaker 5: different atmosphere when you thought about NFL football.
• 18:12
Speaker 4: Well, and let me say this, because I agree with you.
• 18:18
Speaker 4: If I were to ask a, well, let me rephrase it.
• 18:21
Speaker 4: If I would think anybody would just show up, drive
• 18:26
Speaker 4: from somewhere, show up to be on my show. In
• 18:30
Speaker 4: this generation, they're not going to be on my show
• 18:34
Speaker 4: unless I pay them. But yet, you take a Hall
• 18:38
Speaker 4: of Fame great receiver, Sterling Sharp, who would just, on
• 18:41
Speaker 4: his way home, would stop in and come in and
• 18:45
Speaker 4: had been on the show a couple weeks before.
• 18:48
Speaker 3: Right. And just can't... That guy is not.
• 18:52
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 18:52
Speaker 3: I don't see that guy today.
• 18:54
Speaker 5: He comes from that generation. It's like Christy Martin coming in.
• 18:57
  Speaker 3: To the studio.
• 18:58
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 18:58
Speaker 5: You know, just the whole attitude of, you know, we'll
• 19:05
Speaker 5: help you out, you help us out. It was like
• 19:08
Speaker 5: you can tell that even though you guys played, when
• 19:10
Speaker 5: you interact, you and Sterling, when we're on the air,
• 19:12
Speaker 5: you can tell that you guys, even though you were
• 19:14
Speaker 5: on different teams, you still bonded. Like you still have
• 19:17
Speaker 5: that bond of we were playing in the same era
• 19:19
Speaker 5: in the NFL. Yes. And it's just a different, I
• 19:23
Speaker 5: don't know, a different vibe that you get from older players.
• 19:26
  Speaker 5: Don't you think?
• 19:29
Speaker 6: The big phrase, it's just a game.
• 19:32
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 19:32
Speaker 7: And I know I heard him say that. If he
• 19:34
Speaker 7: didn't say it last week, he's definitely said it when he's.
• 19:36
  Speaker 3: Been on before.
• 19:37
  Speaker 5: Yes.
• 19:37
Speaker 7: It's like no matter how serious it is, knowing that
• 19:41
Speaker 7: you've been a professional player, you still have to remember
• 19:44
  Speaker 7: it's just a game. Yeah.
• 19:45
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 19:46
  Speaker 6: And I don't know.
• 19:47
Speaker 3: And he treated it. He treated it.
• 19:50
Speaker 4: If anybody I played against, and even within the Pro Bowls,
• 19:56
Speaker 4: it was him who really just played it as a game. Yeah.
• 20:00
  Speaker 6: Like, obviously, it's a job.
• 20:02
  Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a job. It's a paid career.
• 20:04
  Speaker 6: It's a paid career.
• 20:05
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 20:05
  Speaker 6: But it's a game. It's entertainment.
• 20:08
  Speaker 3: It's a fan base.
• 20:09
Speaker 4: At the end of the day, yes. Yes. And he
• 20:13
Speaker 4: for sure showed that in his play and his personality.
• 20:18
Speaker 4: And again, you're talking about, again, a Hall of Fame guy.
• 20:23
Speaker 4: Just popping in, just to interact with us on the show,
• 20:28
Speaker 4: just for the fun of talking. Just to take over
• 20:31
Speaker 4: the show. Yeah, just to take over the show.
• 20:33
Speaker 6: Just for the love of the game.
• 20:34
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 20:35
Speaker 6: And to fire you.
• 20:37
  Speaker 5: And, yes, exactly.
• 20:39
  Speaker 3: My point exactly.
• 20:41
Speaker 4: The problem is I can't let him get into the
• 20:47
Speaker 4: seat because I'm getting fired.
• 20:49
Speaker 3: Lisa's getting hired up.
• 20:52
Speaker 5: I'm just looking out for job security, buddy. Whoever's in
• 20:54
Speaker 5: that seat, I'll be nice to.
• 20:56
  Speaker 3: All right.
• 20:58
  Speaker 4: WVU Marshall.
• 20:59
  Speaker 7: Oh, boy.
• 21:01
Speaker 5: Rough weekend, right? You want to start with WVU? Let's
• 21:04
  Speaker 5: start there.
• 21:05
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 21:05
Speaker 3: Give us some numbers.
• 21:06
  Speaker 7: All right.
• 21:07
  Speaker 6: All right.
• 21:07
Speaker 5: So I've got some numbers to throw at you. Of course,
• 21:10
Speaker 5: it was just a shootout, basically, between the two teams. But,
• 21:15
Speaker 5: you know, WVU ended up with the L. They lost
• 21:18
Speaker 5: to Iowa State, 45-42. And it's something that I thought
• 21:22
Speaker 5: of you during the game, Carl, because– What I saw
• 21:26
Speaker 5: on the field was something that you brought up. You know,
• 21:29
Speaker 5: we pretty much have a dynamic, solid offense to a degree,
• 21:33
Speaker 5: but it's being dragged down by this defense that's collapsing. And,
• 21:39
Speaker 5: you know, these costly self-inflicted mistakes, I mean, they just,
• 21:43
Speaker 5: you know, they surrendered. Listen to this. The defense surrendered
• 21:46
Speaker 5: 577 total yards in the game. 265 of those yards
• 21:48
  Speaker 5: were rushing.
• 21:52
  Speaker 6: Okay?
• 21:53
  Speaker 5: That's an issue.
• 21:54
  Speaker 3: That's an issue.
• 21:54
  Speaker 6: That's a problem. That's a problem.
• 21:56
Speaker 5: And we've even said this. You know, now it brings
• 21:59
Speaker 5: up the point, and you guys correct me if you
• 22:01
Speaker 5: think I'm wrong, but maybe Virginia was overrated. Maybe they
• 22:05
Speaker 5: were ranked and shouldn't have been ranked. I mean, because
• 22:07
Speaker 5: I'm thinking that win, we were like, we kind of
• 22:11
Speaker 5: hung our hat on it. Like, oh, my gosh, we're
• 22:12
Speaker 5: going to be, you know, we're going to be this team.
• 22:13
Speaker 5: We're going to be a force to reckon with. And
• 22:16
Speaker 5: it's not turning out that way.
• 22:20
Speaker 4: I'll say this about predictions. I think that they are,
• 22:25
Speaker 4: there are a lot of times they're really close and
• 22:28
Speaker 4: a lot of times they're even correct. But what you
• 22:32
Speaker 4: don't really know is.
• 22:35
Speaker 3: Really what's coming out of the locker room when they
• 22:37
  Speaker 3: hit the field.
• 22:38
Speaker 4: Right. And I think that is what's happening now with WVU.
• 22:46
Speaker 4: The guys that are coming out of the locker room,
• 22:49
Speaker 4: They are not playing at what the expectation for them
• 22:55
Speaker 4: has been. They're just not– why, how, what's the reason?
• 22:59
Speaker 5: They're not in a good mental space, are they?
• 23:01
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 23:01
  Speaker 3: I just don't see it.
• 23:02
Speaker 7: Well, it's a little easier, I think, to speculate in
• 23:05
Speaker 7: the NFL because you've seen a lot of these players playing.
• 23:08
Speaker 6: For a while through college and into the pros.
• 23:10
Speaker 7: Yes. I think with college, with this transfer portal, I mean,
• 23:15
  Speaker 7: you're talking– 18, 19, 20, 21-year-olds. I mean, some of
• 23:18
Speaker 7: these kids you've only got a year or two tape on.
• 23:20
Speaker 7: I think we may think they're this player, but then
• 23:23
Speaker 7: they wound up in a new school this year, and then, oh,
• 23:26
Speaker 7: they weren't anywhere close to what you thought.
• 23:29
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 23:30
  Speaker 3: And I'll say— It's a gamble.
• 23:31
  Speaker 6: It's a gamble. You don't know.
• 23:32
  Speaker 3: It's always a gamble.
• 23:33
  Speaker 6: It is.
• 23:34
Speaker 5: And you're spending a lot of money on that gamble, too. Like,
• 23:37
Speaker 5: you're losing NIL. Right.
• 23:39
Speaker 4: My thing, too, to this— Okay, so I'm in Minnesota,
• 23:44
Speaker 4: and Pete Carroll comes in, and I've said this before,
• 23:47
Speaker 4: and he puts in the bump and run, and my
• 23:49
  Speaker 4: career changes.
• 23:50
Speaker 3: He doesn't come. I don't see my career being that.
• 23:55
Speaker 4: If I don't have him and go somewhere else and play... Like,
• 23:59
Speaker 4: when I went to the Saints, we weren't really playing
• 24:01
Speaker 4: a lot of man-to-man. We played zone, and I knew
• 24:04
Speaker 4: that it was not my thing. And so when I
• 24:08
Speaker 4: say that is, a lot of times.
• 24:12
Speaker 4: Where the coach is, you know, the coach are– if
• 24:16
Speaker 4: you come in and just put something in and you've
• 24:19
Speaker 4: got– let's say you put zone in and you've got
• 24:22
Speaker 4: four guys who are used to playing man-to-man.
• 24:26
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 24:27
  Speaker 3: You've got a problem.
• 24:28
  Speaker 5: Yeah, exactly.
• 24:29
Speaker 3: But you believe now– I believe.
• 24:31
Speaker 4: That coaches now– buy into the fact that my offense
• 24:35
Speaker 4: worked because it worked somewhere else.
• 24:38
Speaker 3: But those guys could play zone.
• 24:40
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 24:41
Speaker 3: We don't even want to play zone.
• 24:43
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 24:44
Speaker 3: And you're trying to make.
• 24:45
  Speaker 6: Us do it.
• 24:47
Speaker 5: Sometimes you have to make adjustments to what your players
• 24:49
Speaker 5: are comfortable with rather than what you want.
• 24:51
Speaker 3: And I don't know if coaches are coaching that way.
• 24:54
  Speaker 3: You know?
• 24:55
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 24:56
Speaker 4: And... I'm the worst coach to be able to make
• 24:59
Speaker 4: that assessment, but I'm just saying, to me, I think
• 25:02
Speaker 4: that trying to do– and I know what I tried
• 25:05
Speaker 4: to do at West Virginia State was play that same
• 25:10
Speaker 4: exact thing like Pete Carroll.
• 25:12
  Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
• 25:14
Speaker 4: My process was I had two guys, or really about
• 25:17
Speaker 4: three guys, that I knew, good size, good.
• 25:21
Speaker 3: Speed, strong, that could play man-to-man.
• 25:25
  Speaker 4: Right.
• 25:25
Speaker 3: So now all I got to.
• 25:27
Speaker 4: Do is find some guys to pass rush, get in there,
• 25:30
Speaker 4: chase the quarterback around, and we can cover the receivers.
• 25:34
Speaker 4: And it worked out for us. You know, defense was
• 25:37
Speaker 4: never a problem for us. But I don't know now—
• 25:42
Speaker 4: if it even matters to the coaches at all the
• 25:46
Speaker 4: different levels of what you– what do you have.
• 25:49
Speaker 3: Before what you do? It's just what you do. And
• 25:53
  Speaker 3: I don't know if that's going to work. I don't
• 25:55
Speaker 3: know if that works for him.
• 25:57
Speaker 7: I mean, you would think Rich Rod, with all the
• 25:59
Speaker 7: experience he has now, he would be able to kind
• 26:02
Speaker 7: of figure that out, right?
• 26:03
  Speaker 5: Exactly.
• 26:04
  Speaker 3: Exactly.
• 26:05
  Speaker 5: That's a concern.
• 26:06
  Speaker 3: That's a concern. But don't we know that– And I
• 26:10
Speaker 3: don't want to say it's his only thing, but offense
• 26:13
Speaker 3: is his pride and joy.
• 26:15
Speaker 6: Well, obviously, if you can't put up 42 points and
• 26:18
  Speaker 6: get a win.
• 26:19
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 26:19
  Speaker 3: There's a defensive problem. Yes, there's a problem.
• 26:23
Speaker 6: 42 points should win you 99% of games.
• 26:26
  Speaker 2: 99.9%.
• 26:26
  Speaker 3: Seriously. Yeah.
• 26:30
Speaker 4: And then when you start to look at that, you know,
• 26:32
Speaker 4: you're a WVU fan, and you're looking at that, and
• 26:35
Speaker 4: you're saying, well, wait a minute.
• 26:36
Speaker 3: What is wrong with our defense?
• 26:37
  Speaker 4: Right. Right.
• 26:39
Speaker 5: And so that brings me to my next question I
• 26:41
Speaker 5: want you guys to answer for me. So, you know,
• 26:43
Speaker 5: with Rich Rod being– he's labeled the defensive performance atrocious,
• 26:47
Speaker 5: of course. So do you think the defensive coordinator– I
• 26:51
Speaker 5: think his name is Zach Alley. Do you think he's
• 26:53
Speaker 5: in the hot seat now? Do you think that's a possibility?
• 26:56
Speaker 3: I'm shocked that he's not in a seat at all.
• 27:00
Speaker 5: I mean, I think Rich, he could– he's not to
• 27:03
Speaker 5: that point yet because the offense is performing and there's
• 27:05
Speaker 5: still hope. It's not like both sides of the ball
• 27:07
Speaker 5: are really, really, really bad. The offense is holding its own.
• 27:11
Speaker 5: But the defense is the part that's really, really, really struggling. So,
• 27:15
Speaker 5: to me, do you think he would put the sacrificial
• 27:19
Speaker 5: lamb out there to kind of appease the fans? Because
• 27:23
Speaker 5: you know they're going to start getting restless.
• 27:25
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 27:25
Speaker 4: Well, here's my question. Are you putting in a system
• 27:34
Speaker 4: defensively that matches the players?
• 27:37
  Speaker 3: That you had.
• 27:38
Speaker 5: That's a valid question. I have no idea.
• 27:40
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 27:41
Speaker 3: And we will never know. Right, right.
• 27:44
Speaker 4: The other piece of it is, are you thinking about
• 27:50
Speaker 4: what's next? What are you going to do next? Because
• 27:53
Speaker 4: if you are the guy that's in charge of the defense,
• 27:57
Speaker 4: and the defense is the issue, and everybody's saying it's
• 28:01
Speaker 4: the issue, you have to know that you're on a real,
• 28:06
  Speaker 4: real hot seat.
• 28:07
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 28:08
Speaker 4: And you're going to have to kind of find, like,
• 28:10
Speaker 4: you know what I would do? I would go right
• 28:11
Speaker 4: to the head coach and say, Coach, you know, I'm
• 28:14
Speaker 4: struggling here. What do I need to do?
• 28:15
Speaker 5: What do you think he already has? I can see
• 28:19
Speaker 5: Rich Rod initiating that conversation without him.
• 28:21
Speaker 3: Oh, yeah. But see, I want to beat him to it.
• 28:25
Speaker 4: I want to beat him to it because I want
• 28:26
Speaker 4: him to know that I know that we're not doing
• 28:30
Speaker 4: anything on that side of the ball.
• 28:31
Speaker 6: I mean, this is year two. And he is in
• 28:34
Speaker 6: control of his own recruitment.
• 28:36
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 28:37
Speaker 7: So talking about the system and whether you've got players
• 28:40
Speaker 7: in place for your system.
• 28:42
  Speaker 3: There you go.
• 28:42
Speaker 7: That's two years that you had to recruit people to
• 28:45
  Speaker 7: fit your system.
• 28:47
Speaker 5: Yes. Because it's not like it used to be, Matt.
• 28:49
Speaker 5: You made a valid point. It used to be you
• 28:51
  Speaker 5: give them four.
• 28:52
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 28:52
Speaker 5: Because the way recruiting worked, there wasn't NIL. And so
• 28:55
Speaker 5: you had to get your– you know, your freshman players
• 28:57
Speaker 5: in and let the other ones ride their time out
• 29:00
Speaker 5: and then, you know, see. So by the time they
• 29:02
Speaker 5: were juniors and seniors, that's when you would really see
• 29:05
Speaker 5: whether or not the system works. But now there's no excuse.
• 29:08
Speaker 5: People don't accept it because in NIL there's such a
• 29:10
Speaker 5: turnover of players every year.
• 29:13
Speaker 7: If you don't have it within two years, then you've
• 29:15
Speaker 7: done it wrong. You've done something wrong.
• 29:20
Speaker 5: We'll see this week, see what happens.
• 29:22
Speaker 3: Well, yeah, I think this week, They're at.
• 29:27
Speaker 5: Home in Morgantown at noon. I think Arizona. They play Arizona.
• 29:32
Speaker 4: I think this week, even if you win, even if
• 29:36
  Speaker 4: you win, let's say it's a shootout.
• 29:38
  Speaker 5: It's 47. another high-scoring game.
• 29:47
Speaker 3: The reality to that is, yes, we won.
• 29:51
Speaker 4: But, yes, we for sure have a defensive problem that
• 29:55
Speaker 4: has to be fixed.
• 29:56
  Speaker 5: Still bad.
• 29:57
Speaker 3: Yes, it's still bad.
• 29:58
Speaker 4: How do we– because if you're going to score that
• 30:00
Speaker 4: many points, how are you letting the other team score.
• 30:03
  Speaker 3: That many points?
• 30:04
Speaker 5: It boggles the mind to watch the team. It's like
• 30:07
Speaker 5: you think for one second the offense just moves the
• 30:10
Speaker 5: ball and looks sharp and clean, and then the next
• 30:13
Speaker 5: thing you know they get a– they did have a
• 30:15
Speaker 5: lot of penalties too. There were a lot of flags.
• 30:18
Speaker 7: I was listening to the guys on the Sunday sports
• 30:20
Speaker 7: line yesterday talking. I was only kind of halfway listening,
• 30:24
Speaker 7: so I don't know the stats exactly. But this defense
• 30:27
Speaker 7: is apparently like last place in like run defense, passing defense,
• 30:32
Speaker 7: scoring defense. I mean, they're like near the bottom in
• 30:36
Speaker 7: all defensive categories, not just some of them. All of them.
• 30:39
Speaker 3: The whole thing. And that's hard to do. Yeah.
• 30:45
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 30:46
  Speaker 3: I mean. He's not wrong. I mean, that's a hard
• 30:50
  Speaker 3: thing to do.
• 30:50
Speaker 4: Like, there's got to be, you've got to have players
• 30:55
Speaker 4: that can help you on the run. You got to
• 30:58
Speaker 4: have secondary guys that can take care of the passing
• 31:03
Speaker 4: and teams run on us. Because the scouting report is
• 31:06
Speaker 4: like we can run especially to the right side.
• 31:08
Speaker 3: We can throw especially to the left corner.
• 31:11
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 31:12
Speaker 3: That's your scouting report.
• 31:13
Speaker 4: But it seems now that the scouting report is we
• 31:17
Speaker 4: can do whatever we want.
• 31:19
Speaker 7: I mean, when you're in last place in all of them,
• 31:21
Speaker 7: you've got a defensive line problem.
• 31:23
  Speaker 6: You've got a secondary problem.
• 31:24
  Speaker 3: Something not right.
• 31:26
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 31:27
Speaker 5: I agree. All of the above. But I think you're right.
• 31:30
Speaker 5: I think here's the thing. If they do not win Saturday,
• 31:34
Speaker 5: it's going to be it's going to get really ugly.
• 31:36
Speaker 5: I feel like these fans, you know, like like we've
• 31:39
Speaker 5: all we've known all along when Rich Rod came back
• 31:42
Speaker 5: to coach that you've got people that love him and
• 31:45
Speaker 5: you've got people that feel really strongly. I don't want
• 31:47
Speaker 5: to say hate, but they don't like him at all.
• 31:50
Speaker 6: They're going to have to keep the motors running on
• 31:51
  Speaker 6: the fire trucks.
• 31:52
Speaker 3: Because there's going to be couches running.
• 31:53
  Speaker 5: Yes, yes.
• 31:54
Speaker 6: For all the wrong reasons.
• 31:55
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think the panic meter is going to be
• 31:58
Speaker 5: a full-blown high if they lose Saturday at home at noon.
• 32:02
  Speaker 5: I don't know what Arizona's record is, but it's a
• 32:04
Speaker 5: game they should win.
• 32:06
  Speaker 3: So we'll see.
• 32:07
Speaker 4: Well, let me ask this. Who said that, though? Did
• 32:10
Speaker 4: the media– I'm sure you got that out of the media.
• 32:13
  Speaker 6: No, no, no.
• 32:13
Speaker 5: Just looking– I don't know what– do you know that–
• 32:16
Speaker 5: maybe Matt could look it up. But I don't think
• 32:17
Speaker 5: they're like the stellar, you know, name this year that
• 32:20
Speaker 5: they normally are. I think they're having an off season.
• 32:24
  Speaker 5: So I feel like it's.
• 32:25
  Speaker 6: Well, no.
• 32:26
  Speaker 5: Are they good?
• 32:26
  Speaker 6: They're 4-1.
• 32:28
Speaker 5: Oh, they are 4-1.
• 32:29
  Speaker 6: They're 1-1 in the conference, but they're 4-1.
• 32:31
  Speaker 5: Okay, they're 1-1 in conference. Maybe that's what I was
• 32:33
Speaker 5: looking at. But still, I mean, they're at home and–
• 32:40
Speaker 5: Maybe just the fans are saying that.
• 32:42
  Speaker 3: See, I've learned.
• 32:44
  Speaker 6: Go ahead.
• 32:45
Speaker 5: No, I just feel like the fans, if they do
• 32:48
Speaker 5: not win this game at home, there's going to be
• 32:50
  Speaker 5: an issue.
• 32:50
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 32:51
Speaker 5: There's going to be an issue.
• 32:53
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 32:54
  Speaker 3: A big one.
• 32:55
Speaker 4: And I think, too, the expectation, the expectation of winning
• 33:04
Speaker 4: and you're against a team that's only lost one game.
• 33:06
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 33:09
  Speaker 5: I didn't realize that.
• 33:09
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 33:10
  Speaker 3: Misspoke.
• 33:10
  Speaker 6: Sorry.
• 33:12
Speaker 5: I make mistakes once in a while.
• 33:13
Speaker 3: So, really, now, what do you do? Like, because you
• 33:19
  Speaker 3: can't— You.
• 33:20
Speaker 5: Win the game. You win the game. You have this
• 33:22
Speaker 5: team prepared. You take care of this penalty issue. You
• 33:25
Speaker 5: clean up the game.
• 33:26
  Speaker 6: I don't know.
• 33:27
Speaker 5: Defense, try something different. What could it hurt? If you're
• 33:30
Speaker 5: dead last in every single category in defense in the
• 33:35
Speaker 5: NCAA— Try something different. What's the worst that could happen?
• 33:40
  Speaker 6: You lose again.
• 33:41
Speaker 7: They basically have three weeks to figure it out because
• 33:44
Speaker 7: after that, they've got number 11, Texas Tech, Kansas, whatever.
• 33:49
Speaker 7: Then they've got number 22, Houston, and they end the
• 33:51
Speaker 7: season with number 12, Utah. That's three top 25-ranked teams
• 33:55
Speaker 7: out of the last four games.
• 33:57
Speaker 5: Yeah, they've got some.
• 34:00
  Speaker 6: That's a big uphill climb.
• 34:01
  Speaker 3: That's a climb.
• 34:03
Speaker 5: And to be this far into the season and still
• 34:06
Speaker 5: have the same issues on defense, you don't see any improvement.
• 34:09
Speaker 5: At least I haven't seen the improvement that should be
• 34:13
Speaker 5: happening at this point in the season. I don't know
• 34:14
Speaker 5: what you guys think, but there should.
• 34:16
  Speaker 3: Be little steps.
• 34:18
Speaker 4: I'm with you, but my question is, if I'm the
• 34:23
Speaker 4: head coach, how long am I going to stay with
• 34:27
  Speaker 4: my D coordinator?
• 34:28
Speaker 3: How long am I going to stay with him?
• 34:29
Speaker 5: That was my point.
• 34:30
  Speaker 3: Because....
• 34:32
Speaker 4: At least let's change up. But then here comes the problem.
• 34:36
Speaker 4: So let's say I fire you and I bring Matt in, right?
• 34:39
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 34:40
Speaker 4: Matt's going to have– we're not going to keep the
• 34:42
Speaker 4: same defense, that's for sure. You're not going to keep
• 34:45
Speaker 4: doing the same thing. So Matt comes in and he says, hey,
• 34:48
Speaker 4: I've got this. We'll change it to this kind of defense.
• 34:52
  Speaker 6: Okay.
• 34:54
Speaker 4: Well, those guys might not even be able to play
• 34:56
Speaker 4: that style of defense anymore.
• 34:59
Speaker 5: But at least you put the effort in.
• 35:01
Speaker 3: You've got to do something. You've got to do something.
• 35:05
Speaker 5: You're in trouble right now. You're in deep trouble.
• 35:08
Speaker 7: If you throw out the UT Martin game, because that
• 35:11
Speaker 7: doesn't count, the other four games, they are giving up,
• 35:14
Speaker 7: on average, 36 points a game.
• 35:17
  Speaker 5: Yeah, that's unreal.
• 35:19
Speaker 3: 36 points in football. is really something. There's a problem. Yeah,
• 35:24
  Speaker 3: that's really something.
• 35:25
Speaker 5: Well, let's move on to Huntington. Let's move on to Huntington.
• 35:27
Speaker 5: We already talked about it.
• 35:28
  Speaker 4: I know, right?
• 35:29
Speaker 5: It was one of those weekends, and it was just–
• 35:32
Speaker 5: and Marshall, you know, they had a really tough loss.
• 35:34
Speaker 5: They lost to James Madison University. Drops their record to 3-2.
• 35:41
Speaker 5: JMU's 5-0, so at least, you know, they'll probably win
• 35:44
Speaker 5: the Sun Belt, in my opinion. They're pretty good. But
• 35:46
Speaker 5: another here-we-go common theme. Defense isn't great in Huntington either, guys.
• 35:51
Speaker 5: They allowed over 300 yards in the first half and
• 35:55
Speaker 5: gave up 28 points in the second quarter.
• 35:59
Speaker 3: You watched it. That sounds like.
• 36:01
Speaker 5: Two interceptions in the red zone, and they failed to
• 36:04
Speaker 5: capitalize on three red zone trips. You can't do that
• 36:10
Speaker 5: against a team like JMU.
• 36:11
  Speaker 3: Okay.
• 36:13
  Speaker 5: Can't.
• 36:14
Speaker 3: The two interceptions in the red area.
• 36:16
  Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
• 36:18
Speaker 4: I understand that you do have to throw the ball.
• 36:20
Speaker 4: I'm not an offensive coordinator by any stretch. I'm not
• 36:24
Speaker 4: even going to give myself any kind of coach's nod.
• 36:29
Speaker 4: But you, as a player, what are we doing? Like,
• 36:37
Speaker 4: what are we doing?
• 36:37
Speaker 5: Well, that brings my next, and I want you both
• 36:39
Speaker 5: to answer this. So how much of that first half
• 36:43
Speaker 5: collapse falls on player execution or versus the defensive scheme
• 36:50
  Speaker 5: adjustments by coaches?
• 36:51
Speaker 4: Well, here's the reality of it. In most cases, publicly,
• 36:57
Speaker 4: we blame the team.
• 36:59
Speaker 3: We blame the player.
• 37:00
Speaker 5: We blame the player's execution.
• 37:02
Speaker 3: Okay. As you go forward, sooner or later, then it
• 37:07
Speaker 3: switches to the coach.
• 37:10
Speaker 4: I think it starts players and it ends with the
• 37:14
Speaker 4: coach because at some point, you're looking at these.
• 37:17
Speaker 3: Players and you think, well, what did they do last year? They, oh,
• 37:19
Speaker 3: they were pretty, you know, they were all right. They
• 37:21
  Speaker 3: did pretty good.
• 37:22
Speaker 4: Why are we not playing that way this year? And
• 37:25
Speaker 4: God forbid if the system changed. Cause if you change
• 37:29
  Speaker 4: the system and.
• 37:31
Speaker 5: You, But you have different players. I mean, I don't
• 37:34
Speaker 5: even know. I bet it's the same issue at Marshall
• 37:37
Speaker 5: as it is at any of the mid-level collegiate programs.
• 37:40
Speaker 5: Losing your players. You've got different players coming in and out.
• 37:43
Speaker 5: Because what happens, as we all know, we beat this
• 37:45
Speaker 5: dead horse, let's beat it some more. You get some
• 37:48
Speaker 5: players in that are successful and good playing at Marshall
• 37:52
Speaker 5: or W, and guess what's going to happen?
• 37:54
  Speaker 3: They're leaving.
• 37:55
Speaker 5: They're leaving. They're going to go where the money is
• 37:57
Speaker 5: and the bigger name is.
• 37:57
  Speaker 1: Yeah.
• 38:00
  Speaker 5: I don't know. I just– I don't know. Something needs
• 38:03
Speaker 5: to happen down there too.
• 38:05
Speaker 4: Well, and we have said– we have said before, we've
• 38:08
Speaker 4: had– I think it's been a while back we were
• 38:10
Speaker 4: talking about Marshall and NIL money.
• 38:13
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 38:14
Speaker 4: I don't know if Marshall's able to compete in NIL money.
• 38:19
Speaker 4: I don't know if they can keep a superstar quarterback.
• 38:22
Speaker 4: I don't know if they can keep a superstar running back.
• 38:26
Speaker 5: I think– And I need to look it up. And
• 38:29
Speaker 5: this I'm just going to throw numbers out there that
• 38:31
Speaker 5: I think I remember are correct, because somebody in a
• 38:33
Speaker 5: Sunbelt conference group on Facebook that I was looking through
• 38:37
Speaker 5: mentioned NIL money and compared JMU's money to Marshall's. And JMU,
• 38:42
Speaker 5: I think, made between between 13.5, 14 NIL money, which
• 38:47
  Speaker 5: isn't horrible.
• 38:48
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 38:49
Speaker 5: And then you had Marshall at 10. So they're kind
• 38:52
Speaker 5: of middle of the pack Sunbelt. But WU has like
• 38:55
Speaker 5: 30 to 35 mil. So that's, you know, but then
• 38:59
Speaker 5: you compare that to like these other schools at the
• 39:02
Speaker 5: top of the tier. And it's no comparison.
• 39:04
Speaker 3: Yeah, that money sounds good.
• 39:06
  Speaker 5: It's not close.
• 39:07
Speaker 4: But if it's not anywhere remotely close to the competitive teams.
• 39:12
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 39:13
Speaker 4: I mean, because, come on, if I got the most money,
• 39:17
Speaker 4: I'm not saying that you're going to win. But you're
• 39:20
Speaker 4: not going to be bad. You're going to win a
• 39:22
  Speaker 4: bunch of games.
• 39:23
Speaker 5: Well, and you're going to be able to stabilize your
• 39:25
Speaker 5: program and keep players longer.
• 39:27
  Speaker 3: Keep players longer.
• 39:28
Speaker 5: You know, that's part of it.
• 39:29
Speaker 6: I hate to be like this.
• 39:30
  Speaker 3: Uh-oh.
• 39:32
Speaker 6: Be it. I hate to be this way.
• 39:36
Speaker 7: And there are a lot of people that hated Charles
• 39:38
Speaker 7: Huff for a number of reasons.
• 39:40
Speaker 6: I thought he was an okay head coach. I thought
• 39:42
Speaker 6: he was a good– Oh, he was an excellent coach.
• 39:43
  Speaker 6: I thought he was a.
• 39:43
Speaker 7: Great choice for Marshall at the time. It's what they needed.
• 39:46
Speaker 7: I thought– Doc Holliday was a great coach until he wasn't.
• 39:50
Speaker 7: He eventually lost the locker room in that last year.
• 39:52
  Speaker 5: He did.
• 39:54
Speaker 7: For a long time, he was a good coach. Before that,
• 39:57
Speaker 7: you had Mark Snyder in there.
• 39:59
  Speaker 6: Okay, whatever.
• 40:00
Speaker 7: I was not impressed when they brought on Tony Gibson.
• 40:05
Speaker 7: I just felt like after Doc Holliday and after Charles Huff,
• 40:11
Speaker 7: I get bringing one of your guys, one of your
• 40:14
Speaker 7: Marshall guys back home to coach the team. I feel
• 40:17
Speaker 7: like it just wasn't the right fit. I don't think
• 40:21
Speaker 7: he is the guy to navigate this whole transfer portal,
• 40:27
Speaker 7: NIL world. I don't think he's the guy that's going to,
• 40:31
Speaker 7: I don't think he's an elite enough coach to be
• 40:35
Speaker 7: able to handle this Sunbelt Conference.
• 40:37
Speaker 5: And I'm going to play devil's advocate to what you're saying.
• 40:40
Speaker 5: I understand what you're saying, but With the money that's
• 40:43
Speaker 5: available to Marshall. That's the issue.
• 40:46
Speaker 7: But it's– and Carl was kind of getting to this
• 40:48
Speaker 7: a little bit earlier. I mean, it's like you can
• 40:50
Speaker 7: pay to have all the best players on your team.
• 40:53
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 40:54
Speaker 7: But if you don't have a coach that can get
• 40:55
Speaker 7: them all rounded up together on the same page, what
• 40:58
  Speaker 7: does it matter?
• 40:58
Speaker 5: Well, that's true too.
• 40:59
Speaker 7: Everybody's just doing whatever they think they know.
• 41:01
  Speaker 5: That's true.
• 41:03
Speaker 3: But– And think about this.
• 41:05
Speaker 4: So Matt gets some NIO money, and he's a starter,
• 41:10
Speaker 4: and I realize that he got it. Where do I
• 41:16
Speaker 4: got to go to talk? Because I need some more.
• 41:19
Speaker 4: Because I think I'm better. I can't quote an exact situation,
• 41:26
Speaker 4: but I cannot imagine They're not being a discussion.
• 41:31
Speaker 3: Me thinking that I'm this good.
• 41:35
Speaker 4: Yeah. And Matt's thinking he's that good. And he gets,
• 41:38
Speaker 4: he gets a, he gets some NIO money. That's above mine.
• 41:42
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 41:43
Speaker 4: There is no way I'm going to be okay with that.
• 41:47
Speaker 4: How many times do you think. That is going to
• 41:50
  Speaker 4: be a problem.
• 41:51
  Speaker 5: I'm sure it's a problem.
• 41:53
  Speaker 3: In the system.
• 41:54
Speaker 5: In the whole system. That's what I was just going
• 41:56
Speaker 5: to say. I'm sure the egos get in the way
• 41:58
Speaker 5: when it comes to the NIL pay. You know, that
• 42:02
Speaker 5: causes some friction on some teams.
• 42:03
Speaker 3: It's bad in the pros.
• 42:04
Speaker 5: But a good coach can handle that. I would think
• 42:06
Speaker 5: a good coach can smooth that over in some way.
• 42:09
Speaker 7: When I see breakdowns in offense, to me, either you're
• 42:13
Speaker 7: calling the wrong plays, which that falls on the coach.
• 42:16
  Speaker 2: Yep. Yep.
• 42:17
Speaker 7: Or the players don't have enough experience running those plays
• 42:20
  Speaker 7: to get.
• 42:21
Speaker 5: The group the practice grease.
• 42:23
Speaker 7: The system so to speak so there's something wrong with
• 42:26
Speaker 7: the practice which again i feel like falls on the
• 42:30
Speaker 7: coaches like i hate to already be at that point
• 42:32
Speaker 7: with this marshall program but that's where i'm at i
• 42:34
Speaker 7: think it's the coaches.
• 42:36
Speaker 5: So so here's another question for both of you guys
• 42:40
Speaker 5: so We're having these issues inside the 20-yard line. That
• 42:44
Speaker 5: needs to be fixed. I mean, if you would have capitalized,
• 42:47
Speaker 5: at least got a field goal out of those three
• 42:50
Speaker 5: red zone trips, that game could have been different. I mean,
• 42:53
Speaker 5: I'm not saying it would have changed the outcome completely,
• 42:56
Speaker 5: but it could have been closer.
• 42:57
Speaker 6: Hold on to the ball.
• 42:58
Speaker 5: Hold on to the ball. You know, so, yeah, I
• 43:00
Speaker 5: was just going to say, but are there certain, like,
• 43:04
Speaker 5: Play calling, Carl, that they should be focusing on when
• 43:07
Speaker 5: they're in the red zone that they're not?
• 43:09
Speaker 3: I think what should– like typically you.
• 43:12
Speaker 5: Have– Besides hold on to the ball.
• 43:13
Speaker 3: I agree with that.
• 43:15
Speaker 4: Typically you have like what we call a red zone practice.
• 43:20
Speaker 3: You go from– Hurry up offense like?
• 43:23
Speaker 4: Well, no, just when you're inside of the 15 and
• 43:26
Speaker 4: going in, right, to score.
• 43:29
  Speaker 3: Right, right, right.
• 43:30
Speaker 4: You have a certain list of plays that you typically
• 43:34
Speaker 4: are going to run.
• 43:36
Speaker 3: So there's one or two things that's happened.
• 43:37
Speaker 4: You've picked the wrong ones, or you've picked the wrong
• 43:41
Speaker 4: ones that the guys can't do.
• 43:45
Speaker 3: They can't block it. Are you throwing it in there,
• 43:48
Speaker 3: or are you running it?
• 43:49
Speaker 5: Well, two interceptions in the red zone.
• 43:51
Speaker 3: That was two out of three.
• 43:53
Speaker 4: Your red zone system could– Be based off of throwing
• 43:58
Speaker 4: the ball. Once we get into the red zone, we
• 44:00
Speaker 4: know you're going to stack your defense. We're going to
• 44:03
Speaker 4: throw the football. Okay, that's fine. But if you throw
• 44:07
Speaker 4: the football and you're getting picked.
• 44:09
Speaker 5: Then there's an issue.
• 44:10
Speaker 6: There's an issue. Because there's safe ways to throw the ball.
• 44:13
Speaker 6: There's safe places on the field to throw it. Right, right.
• 44:16
Speaker 5: I get that. I get that.
• 44:17
Speaker 6: The quarterback's got to get back. You know, three-step drop.
• 44:20
Speaker 6: Get that thing out of there.
• 44:21
Speaker 3: Don't hold on to it.
• 44:22
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 44:24
Speaker 5: They need to revamp their plays that they're using for
• 44:27
Speaker 5: the red zone then, do you think?
• 44:29
Speaker 3: Yeah, I would think so. Something is wrong. Something is
• 44:33
Speaker 3: wrong when you get intercepted like that. In these two systems,
• 44:36
  Speaker 3: something is wrong.
• 44:37
Speaker 4: Now, I'm going to justify our conversation for a second.
• 44:44
Speaker 4: One of the things that players, coaches hate is this talk.
• 44:52
  Speaker 2: Right?
• 44:54
Speaker 3: What do we know?
• 44:55
  Speaker 2: Right?
• 44:55
Speaker 3: What do we know?
• 44:57
Speaker 4: I want to just make the case that, for me,
• 45:00
Speaker 4: I get to judge.
• 45:04
Speaker 4: Sports from this seat now, from the easier seat, and
• 45:09
  Speaker 4: I've been judged.
• 45:12
Speaker 3: And did I hate it?
• 45:12
  Speaker 4: Yeah.
• 45:13
Speaker 3: But do you take it?
• 45:14
  Speaker 6: Yes.
• 45:15
Speaker 3: So if you're hearing it, you got to take it.
• 45:18
Speaker 3: It comes with it.
• 45:19
  Speaker 5: I don't think we're really, I mean, I think sometimes
• 45:21
Speaker 5: fans are, their expectations are unrealistic. You know, that complain, oh,
• 45:27
Speaker 5: we suck, you know, even when they win, you know.
• 45:30
Speaker 5: But I think that In this case, this is a
• 45:33
Speaker 5: legitimate question. I'm not criticizing anything. I want to know
• 45:37
Speaker 5: how do we fix it. And I think most Hurd
• 45:40
Speaker 5: fans that were in attendance on Saturday probably have the
• 45:43
Speaker 5: same question that I do because if this isn't corrected,
• 45:48
Speaker 5: every time we're in the red zone, you've got to
• 45:53
Speaker 5: bring points out of the red zone. some type of,
• 45:56
  Speaker 5: whether it's a field goal.
• 45:57
Speaker 3: Yes, you have to. You have to at least a three-point.
• 46:00
Speaker 5: Or you're out of the game.
• 46:01
  Speaker 3: Yes.
• 46:02
  Speaker 5: Isn't that a reality?
• 46:04
  Speaker 6: Yeah.
• 46:04
Speaker 4: But, see, I think some of that has changed in
• 46:07
Speaker 4: the mindset of these legitimate good and great coaches. Because
• 46:14
Speaker 4: I'm good and great or I've been classified as good
• 46:17
Speaker 4: or great, I can kind of do really whatever I
• 46:19
Speaker 4: want because usually it's going to work out for me.
• 46:23
Speaker 4: And what you don't know is what your competition is.
• 46:27
Speaker 4: Because it's not you. You know, I don't care what
• 46:30
Speaker 4: play you call. If you're against a team that's way
• 46:33
Speaker 4: better or just simply better.
• 46:35
Speaker 5: Than you, they're going to.
• 46:36
  Speaker 6: Shut you down.
• 46:37
Speaker 5: And JMU is obviously not a slouch. They're a good team.
• 46:40
  Speaker 5: They're a good team.
• 46:40
  Speaker 7: No.
• 46:41
  Speaker 3: And I just.
• 46:44
Speaker 4: Think where we are in the state now with our
• 46:48
Speaker 4: major universities, I think– at the football level, I think
• 46:54
Speaker 4: we have notable coaches. I think we have notable coaches.
• 46:58
Speaker 4: And the problem is, is we just haven't, we, they
• 47:02
Speaker 4: just have not been able to, for whatever the reasons are,
• 47:07
Speaker 4: been able to get the teams where we, where the
• 47:12
Speaker 4: fan base would want them.
• 47:14
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 47:14
  Speaker 5: And I think, I think they're not, I don't want
• 47:17
Speaker 5: to say, I don't want to criticize. I want to,
• 47:19
Speaker 5: you know, just, just point out facts and, And the
• 47:22
Speaker 5: facts are that I don't think we're keeping up with
• 47:25
Speaker 5: the NIL world in Morgantown or Huntington.
• 47:28
  Speaker 3: I think you're right.
• 47:29
Speaker 5: I think that's a real difficult, you know, waters for
• 47:32
Speaker 5: these two head coaches to navigate for whatever reason. And,
• 47:36
Speaker 5: you know, it's a different style of recruiting, guys.
• 47:38
Speaker 3: It's not the same.
• 47:39
Speaker 5: It's not our style of recruiting anymore. It doesn't work.
• 47:42
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 47:42
Speaker 4: Okay, so I come knock on your door because I
• 47:45
Speaker 4: want to get your son. If I don't bring my
• 47:48
Speaker 4: pocketbook or talk about my pocketbook.
• 47:50
  Speaker 7: Yeah.
• 47:51
Speaker 4: Then you're not even going to, there's no reason for
• 47:53
Speaker 4: you to even talk to me.
• 47:54
  Speaker 2: No.
• 47:55
Speaker 5: That's what I mean. It's not like it used to
• 47:57
Speaker 5: be when Rich Rod, you know, back when he was
• 47:59
Speaker 5: coaching and we, you know, got close to the national championship. And,
• 48:03
Speaker 5: you know, even Tony Gibson, you know, he's not old,
• 48:07
Speaker 5: but he's not young either. So I think, you know,
• 48:09
Speaker 5: like I said, these coaches have to adjust to a
• 48:12
Speaker 5: whole new world of recruiting, NIL, and just the fact that,
• 48:17
Speaker 5: You think you get a team that you're secure with
• 48:20
Speaker 5: and they've learned a system and then you lose half
• 48:21
Speaker 5: your players every year. I mean, that's a tough thing
• 48:24
Speaker 5: to deal with every year.
• 48:27
  Speaker 3: Every year.
• 48:27
Speaker 5: Every year. We're not talking every, like, it's a rebuilding,
• 48:30
Speaker 5: you know, season. Every year is a rebuilding season for us.
• 48:34
Speaker 4: So midway through your season, you're already talking about, like, what,
• 48:37
Speaker 4: you know, what position do we need to address?
• 48:40
  Speaker 1: Right.
• 48:40
Speaker 4: You know, so we're talking about, oh, we need a
• 48:42
Speaker 4: safety and we probably need a center and we probably
• 48:45
Speaker 4: need a good tight end and all those kind of things. Well,
• 48:49
Speaker 4: all of a sudden, those guys are out there, but
• 48:53
Speaker 4: you know what they got? They got a money sign
• 48:55
  Speaker 4: on them.
• 48:55
  Speaker 3: Exactly.
• 48:55
  Speaker 2: Exactly.
• 48:57
Speaker 3: It's gonna cost you right now.
• 48:58
Speaker 4: You can say okay Well, we can let the top
• 49:00
Speaker 4: ones go and maybe try to get some of the
• 49:03
Speaker 4: lower ones Well, the lower ones are still wanting a
• 49:06
Speaker 4: dollar or two. Yeah, and then when they come They
• 49:09
Speaker 4: might not be able to produce what you thought and
• 49:13
Speaker 4: you've lost the money.
• 49:14
  Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean it's such a double-edged sword now I.
• 49:17
Speaker 7: Really do think that at some point college is football
• 49:22
Speaker 7: and maybe some of the other sports, they're going to
• 49:23
Speaker 7: have to go to contracts.
• 49:25
  Speaker 5: I agree.
• 49:26
Speaker 3: At least two years. Let me try.
• 49:28
Speaker 6: To sign you two years or three years maybe even.
• 49:31
Speaker 3: I would agree, but I'm going to say this.
• 49:34
Speaker 4: I think where it should go, And you can possibly
• 49:39
Speaker 4: do that inside of this system. But the max amount
• 49:45
Speaker 4: of money that you're allowed to provide a player.
• 49:50
Speaker 3: Or female athlete NIL money is this.
• 49:56
  Speaker 5: Just cap it.
• 49:57
Speaker 6: You cap it for everybody.
• 50:01
Speaker 4: Then from there down you can fit somebody in. And
• 50:06
  Speaker 4: I don't even think that it's a million dollars or
• 50:10
  Speaker 4: anything like that.
• 50:11
Speaker 3: I think it's less than that.
• 50:12
  Speaker 2: Yeah.
• 50:13
Speaker 4: You know, but whatever it is, it has to have
• 50:17
Speaker 4: a cap, and your top player.
• 50:21
Speaker 3: Gets the top money.
• 50:22
Speaker 4: If you're trying to recruit a top guy, you can
• 50:26
Speaker 4: give that to him too if you're willing to risk that.
• 50:30
Speaker 4: Or you make the case, you say that all incoming
• 50:34
Speaker 4: freshmen Or even Juco players get this.
• 50:38
Speaker 6: Oh, now that I like.
• 50:39
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 50:40
Speaker 3: They get this. So that's in between the rookie.
• 50:43
Speaker 5: So you have tiers of payments.
• 50:45
  Speaker 2: Yes.
• 50:45
Speaker 5: And you know exactly what you're getting.
• 50:47
Speaker 3: What you're going to get.
• 50:47
Speaker 5: According to where you're coming from.
• 50:49
Speaker 4: So one thing that'll do, that'll stop me from leaving
• 50:53
Speaker 4: Marshall to go to somewhere else. Because I'm still that guy.
• 50:56
Speaker 4: I still qualify for that amount of money.
• 51:00
  Speaker 6: Right.
• 51:00
Speaker 3: So now if I want that kind of money, the
• 51:02
Speaker 3: same money somewhere else.
• 51:03
  Speaker 5: Right.
• 51:04
Speaker 3: Am I going to do that?
• 51:06
  Speaker 7: Maybe.
• 51:06
Speaker 3: But I don't benefit from it.
• 51:09
Speaker 7: Man, if you could expand that to, like, sophomores.
• 51:12
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 51:13
Speaker 7: Freshman and sophomore. Everybody gets this same minimum, whatever it is.
• 51:18
Speaker 4: Now, with that saying, if you're a freshman or sophomore
• 51:23
Speaker 4: and you're not playing, special teams or whatever you might
• 51:26
Speaker 4: play that, you get X.
• 51:28
  Speaker 5: Yeah.
• 51:28
Speaker 4: If you're a freshman, sophomore, and you're playing– You get this.
• 51:34
Speaker 4: If you're a starter, you get that.
• 51:37
Speaker 5: But you know who's not going to be for this?
• 51:39
Speaker 3: Oh, none of the players. The Big Ten, the SEC.
• 51:43
Speaker 3: The players are not going to be for it. The
• 51:45
Speaker 3: players are not going to.
• 51:46
  Speaker 5: Be for it.
• 51:46
  Speaker 1: Big 12.
• 51:47
Speaker 5: Also the conferences because that takes away their leverage. See,
• 51:50
Speaker 5: that's how they stay relevant and in the championship game
• 51:54
Speaker 5: year after year making more and more revenue is the
• 51:56
Speaker 5: fact that they have more NIL money and can keep
• 51:59
  Speaker 5: these top players.
• 51:59
Speaker 6: But it's not all the conferences.
• 52:02
Speaker 7: You know it's only certain conferences that are going to
• 52:05
Speaker 7: be bothered by it.
• 52:06
Speaker 5: Yes, like the SEC. Mainly the SEC. But also Big Ten.
• 52:11
Speaker 5: They're not far off from them. I don't think the
• 52:15
Speaker 5: Big 12 would have a problem with it to a degree.
• 52:18
Speaker 5: And I don't think the ACC would. I think mainly
• 52:21
Speaker 5: the SEC and the Big Ten because they're your biggest
• 52:24
Speaker 5: NIL providers. And they don't want that. They don't want
• 52:27
  Speaker 5: a limit.
• 52:28
Speaker 3: Let me ask this question.
• 52:30
  Speaker 6: So.
• 52:32
Speaker 3: There's mumbling around about high school.
• 52:37
Speaker 5: It's going on in high school.
• 52:38
  Speaker 6: It is.
• 52:38
  Speaker 5: To a degree.
• 52:39
Speaker 6: To me, if anywhere.
• 52:41
Speaker 3: And it's legal. Well, if there's anywhere that you should
• 52:44
Speaker 3: say that you should have a cap.
• 52:47
Speaker 4: And a dollar structure for players, it's at the high school.
• 52:52
Speaker 6: It has to be.
• 52:53
Speaker 7: It has to be.
• 52:53
Speaker 6: That's where it needs to start.
• 52:54
Speaker 3: That's where it has to start, for sure.
• 52:56
Speaker 4: You know, there is not a high school football player
• 53:01
Speaker 4: that is worthy of a hundred thousand dollars to play
• 53:08
Speaker 4: on a high school football team. Cause the state championship
• 53:10
Speaker 4: is not even going to bring the high school any money.
• 53:12
  Speaker 3: Right.
• 53:13
Speaker 5: Well, and then I think, I think this is a
• 53:15
Speaker 5: bigger issue in like, uh, you're like Texas where they
• 53:19
Speaker 5: have high schools, the size of, of, you know, our
• 53:22
Speaker 5: small colleges here. Um, you know, and they have way
• 53:25
Speaker 5: more revenue coming into their, their programs than we have
• 53:28
Speaker 5: in West Virginia. Uh, But definitely, you know, I think
• 53:32
Speaker 5: right now in West Virginia where it's so brand new,
• 53:35
Speaker 5: you know, they're going to have to just try things
• 53:38
Speaker 5: and what works, keep it, and what doesn't work, throw
• 53:40
Speaker 5: it out. And I think it's going to be a
• 53:42
Speaker 5: learning curve for a while. I mean, I think people
• 53:44
Speaker 5: are going to make mistakes with it. And also, you know,
• 53:47
Speaker 5: who knows how strong this will be in West Virginia
• 53:51
Speaker 5: because I'm not saying we don't have excellent athletes that are,
• 53:54
Speaker 5: you know, but, you know, our athletes are typically– stay
• 53:58
Speaker 5: in state a lot of times. Every once in a
• 54:01
Speaker 5: while we'll get one that's, you know, pretty star-powered and
• 54:05
Speaker 5: ends up going somewhere huge.
• 54:06
Speaker 3: The Randy Moss type.
• 54:07
Speaker 5: The Randy Moss type, yeah. But, I mean, I think
• 54:10
Speaker 5: right now with the NIL, that's just an unexplored territory
• 54:13
Speaker 5: in West Virginia that they're just going to have to
• 54:15
Speaker 5: work the kinks out year by year.
• 54:17
Speaker 4: But I think if they don't, if they're not sitting
• 54:20
Speaker 4: down at the table now and start talking about it,
• 54:24
Speaker 4: because if it hits and it hits like– like NIL
• 54:29
Speaker 4: all over the country, then I have a right to
• 54:33
  Speaker 4: ask for. I'm a quarterback, and there's a quarterback in
• 54:38
Speaker 4: Kentucky who's a high school player, and he's getting this.
• 54:43
Speaker 3: Why should I get less?
• 54:44
Speaker 5: Do you think we're that far advanced with it?
• 54:47
  Speaker 3: I don't. I don't even.
• 54:49
Speaker 5: Understand all of it yet, to be honest. Like, I
• 54:52
Speaker 5: don't understand the intricacies of an I.O. at the high
• 54:55
  Speaker 5: school level.
• 54:56
Speaker 3: I don't either. Well, he didn't call Saluja back on.
• 54:59
Speaker 5: He can talk to us about it.
• 55:01
Speaker 3: The safety side of it is, is a cap.
• 55:04
Speaker 6: Yeah. Oh, I agree.
• 55:05
Speaker 3: That's the safety side. Then there's no confusion. But how
• 55:07
  Speaker 3: do you.
• 55:08
Speaker 5: Cap it at the high school level? Like, it's kind
• 55:10
  Speaker 5: of a.
• 55:10
Speaker 6: You have to make it equal.
• 55:12
  Speaker 3: Yeah.
• 55:12
Speaker 6: You just have to make it equal for everybody.
• 55:14
  Speaker 5: Yeah, I guess you're right.
• 55:15
  Speaker 4: And I don't care if– I don't think that Matt's
• 55:19
Speaker 4: the star guy for capital. They think he's the top guy.
• 55:24
Speaker 4: They pay him as the top guy, whatever that amount
• 55:27
  Speaker 4: of money is.
• 55:27
Speaker 5: But on the flip side of that, you have some
• 55:29
Speaker 5: schools that can't pay any players anything. They have no boosters,
• 55:33
Speaker 5: no money. They barely can field a team.
• 55:35
  Speaker 6: True.
• 55:36
Speaker 5: So it's so unequal in our state.
• 55:38
Speaker 4: And what's going to happen is they're going to leave.
• 55:41
Speaker 4: Because I'm going to offer your player.
• 55:44
Speaker 3: Some money to come over to mine.
• 55:47
  Speaker 4: I think you're right in that. But I don't see
• 55:50
  Speaker 4: how we're going to stop. I don't see how it's
• 55:52
Speaker 4: going to stop. And if we don't have some kind
• 55:55
Speaker 4: of cap on it, that's going to make it even worse.
• 55:57
Speaker 4: Because teams that are in communities that have tons and
• 56:02
  Speaker 4: tons of money.
• 56:03
  Speaker 5: That's what I mean.
• 56:04
Speaker 3: They're going to have every player, every good player.
• 56:07
Speaker 5: I mean, it's kind of disheartening, don't you think?
• 56:11
Speaker 4: It makes you look at, and I'll say this, it
• 56:14
Speaker 4: makes you look at football as probably one of the
• 56:18
Speaker 4: worst situations and outcomes.
• 56:23
Speaker 3: That you've ever seen.
• 56:24
Speaker 4: It just seems like it has a way to just drop,
• 56:28
Speaker 4: the bottom just dropping.
• 56:29
  Speaker 3: Out of it.
• 56:31
  Speaker 5: Well, I mean, like I said... I don't want to
• 56:34
Speaker 5: make a judgment on what we're doing in our state
• 56:36
Speaker 5: because I don't think we're into it far enough to
• 56:38
Speaker 5: even see the positives and the negatives. I think we're
• 56:41
Speaker 5: still in that infancy stage with it that, you know,
• 56:44
Speaker 5: we're going to have to see how things pan out
• 56:47
Speaker 5: with it. And like I said, you know, I like
• 56:50
Speaker 5: the idea of the cap, but I don't know how
• 56:53
Speaker 5: it would work at the high school level. I do
• 56:55
Speaker 5: think that if things keep going at the rate they're
• 57:00
Speaker 5: going at the collegiate level, it's going to be a huge,
• 57:03
Speaker 5: huge problem. I know that, uh, what is it? The protect, uh,
• 57:06
Speaker 5: college success protect college sports.
• 57:09
  Speaker 4: Yes.
• 57:10
  Speaker 7: Yes.
• 57:10
Speaker 5: Is going to address a lot of these things that
• 57:12
Speaker 5: we're talking about. So let's just keep our fingers crossed
• 57:14
Speaker 5: and hope that, you know, some of those things include
• 57:16
  Speaker 5: caps and whatnot.
• 57:18
  Speaker 4: And I, and I'll, I'll, I'll close this out on
• 57:21
Speaker 4: with this by saying it's almost virtually impossible to, It's
• 57:27
Speaker 4: just like rules and regulations.
• 57:30
Speaker 3: It's going to go all the way. It's going to
• 57:32
Speaker 3: get to the high school level.
• 57:35
  Speaker 6: I know that.
• 57:36
Speaker 4: Sooner or later, it's going to get to the high
• 57:37
Speaker 4: school level. And if it gets there and we don't
• 57:42
Speaker 4: already have things in place of how it's going to
• 57:44
Speaker 4: work or how we're going to let it work, I
• 57:48
Speaker 4: think what you're going to find is you're going to
• 57:50
Speaker 4: see teams closing out.
• 57:53
  Speaker 3: They're not going to build a team. I mean, that's
• 57:55
  Speaker 3: what I said.
• 57:56
Speaker 4: And it's already that. You already got places that are,
• 58:00
Speaker 4: you know, struggling to fill the football team.
• 58:03
Speaker 5: Right. Well, who was it that had to? They just–
• 58:08
Speaker 5: they had to not finish. They disbanded the team this year,
• 58:11
  Speaker 5: this season.
• 58:12
Speaker 3: Yes, I can't remember who that was. But, yeah, I
• 58:14
Speaker 3: did see that too. I did see that.
• 58:16
Speaker 5: It wasn't Chapmanville, was it?
• 58:17
Speaker 6: No. Was it Van?
• 58:19
  Speaker 4: Van.
• 58:19
Speaker 5: I think you're right. Maybe it was last year. Well, no,
• 58:21
Speaker 5: it was this year. I know this year they tried.
• 58:23
Speaker 3: To build a team. Yeah, I saw that too.
• 58:24
Speaker 5: And they started to get the season. And then, like,
• 58:26
Speaker 5: two games in, they couldn't do it.
• 58:28
Speaker 6: They've been in the news too about, like, this whole
• 58:30
Speaker 6: school district having issues. Yeah, yeah. All right.
• 58:33
Speaker 4: Well, ladies and gentlemen, I hope you enjoyed the conversation
• 58:36
Speaker 4: and we will be back again next week.
