- 0:25Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:30Amen. Amen.
- 0:31Open your Bibles to Romans. Chapter 12 is where we are.
- 0:35We're going to finish our greater series today.
- 0:38We wrap up 2026 New Year's study and series that we're doing that
- 0:44I've entitled greater. It's been very, very encouraging
- 0:47for me and stirring even a few of the points have been very
- 0:51challenging for me personally as I look to the Lord for all that
- 0:55He wants to do in my life as I receive the word of God for me
- 1:00personally. And I hope it's been that way
- 1:02for you too. I hope the Holy Spirit has been
- 1:05taking the messages and shooting them right to your heart so that
- 1:10you might be stirred up. The Bible says in Hebrews
- 1:13chapter 10, verse 24. And let us consider one another
- 1:17in order to stir up love and good works.
- 1:21That's been my prayer, that He would stir up love among us and
- 1:24stir up good works. That you would notice, that you
- 1:28would notice that He's growing us and that He is molding and
- 1:33shaping us. That we're becoming more Christ
- 1:37like each and every time we present ourselves to Him.
- 1:40We obey Him in the fellowship. We study His word.
- 1:44Faith comes by hearing, hearing by the word of God.
- 1:47We persevere through another trial.
- 1:50We make it through. We endure.
- 1:52We patiently wait, even as we were reading today in the Psalm
- 1:56that God is going to do, He says he's going to bring it forth
- 1:59just at the Daybreak or at dawn. And that's a statement of in
- 2:03Psalm 46, that's a statement of the timing of the Lord, which
- 2:07was our first study, wasn't it? In this greater series,
- 2:10counterintuitive studies they are because you think, OK,
- 2:14greater, that means more of this and more of that and greater and
- 2:17it is greater. But God has taken us to these
- 2:20inward things. In the first study, you'll
- 2:22remember we learned that God does things in great ways,
- 2:26little by little. And we studied in depth what God
- 2:30did with the nation of Israel, leading them into taking the
- 2:33Promised land and all that they've waited for and all that
- 2:37they've wanted delivered from Egypt.
- 2:38And then God says, I'm going to take you in, but you won't get
- 2:41the land right away. It's going to be given to you
- 2:45little by little. And the main reason was, is they
- 2:48couldn't handle it all at once. God had to do that work of
- 2:54preparation. And we learned that God is
- 2:57always preparing us for what He has prepared for us.
- 3:01And we went from the topic of little by little to the topic of
- 3:05greater faith. Greater faith.
- 3:07Why? Because it's impossible to
- 3:08please God without faith. It's impossible to be in that
- 3:13joy filled relationship with God and enjoy Him without faith.
- 3:17And so God is calling us to greater faith.
- 3:19And we learned faith comes by hearing, hearing by the word of
- 3:23God. We're going to press into the
- 3:25things of God, the work that he does through his Word.
- 3:28And then last time we learned about greater abiding.
- 3:31And on my way into service last night, I was listening to a
- 3:35Bible study from a pastor, a friend of mine.
- 3:38He's gone home to be with the Lord, but still very encouraging
- 3:40to me as I listened to him and he was sharing in Psalm 1,
- 3:45reminding me of how important it is to be planted, to be planted.
- 3:49Use that illustration of a tree planted by the rivers of water.
- 3:54It doesn't move. It stays in the place of
- 3:56nourishment and it's going. It went.
- 3:59When that tree stays in the place of nourishment, then it is
- 4:02going to bear its fruit in due season.
- 4:06And the timing of the Lord and how important it is for us to
- 4:08abide in Christ and he in us, because without him, what did he
- 4:13teach us? We can do nothing.
- 4:16But then Paul learned as we've learned, that I can do all
- 4:18things through Christ Jesus who strengthens us.
- 4:21Today the topic is greater sacrifice.
- 4:26What God has for us in a new year is greater sacrifice.
- 4:31Can I be very clear that these Bible studies are rooted in our
- 4:34worship of God? I'm not asking for greater
- 4:37sacrifice for the church and to give more to the church.
- 4:41The church always is a secondary place to live out your faith,
- 4:46your primary places in relationship with God through
- 4:48His Son Jesus Christ. That's where everything is lived
- 4:51out. It's your faith.
- 4:52Walk with Jesus, learning who you are in Christ, enjoying his
- 4:57grace, walking in obedience. The fruit of that, the benefit
- 5:01of that is certainly it's lived out in your church, but be
- 5:04careful not to take greater sacrifice.
- 5:06Well, you know, here is pastor asking for more.
- 5:09What I'm asking for more of is more of your intentional
- 5:13following of Christ because that will benefit the church the
- 5:16most. When you become the woman and
- 5:18the man that God wants you to be, the husband, the wife, the
- 5:22single, when you are the single parent, when, when you're the
- 5:26one that God, when you are the one in Christ living out your
- 5:31faith, then we all benefit. It's not greater sacrifice for
- 5:35the church, it's greater sacrifice for the Lord.
- 5:38Why? Because there is such a deep joy
- 5:41and amazing abundant fruit when we put our complete trust in
- 5:45God. I mean, that's where it's at,
- 5:48where we trust God, where it counts.
- 5:51It's a tremendous way of living your life, surrendering your
- 5:54will, surrendering your plans, your efforts to the wisdom of
- 5:59God by faith. But so many have difficulties
- 6:03right there. They don't want to surrender an
- 6:07area or two. They want to hold it in their
- 6:10back pocket that they're willing to give, but not all.
- 6:14They're willing to step forward, but not with everything.
- 6:16They're willing to obey, but perhaps holding back a little of
- 6:19their obedience. Or even worse, they're willing
- 6:22to move forward, but they trust God.
- 6:25But they also trust in man. And what a place of failure that
- 6:31is, trusting in man instead of trusting in God.
- 6:35How many times do you need to be let down by some man or some
- 6:38woman before you realize that God will never let you down and
- 6:42allowing somebody come with this fresh line, somebody's feeding
- 6:46you or something that you know you're able that the man and the
- 6:49woman that we trust in the most. So often ourselves.
- 6:53It's how we see things, our philosophy of life when all the
- 6:58while God is wanting all of our heart, mind and soul.
- 7:04You can rely on and trust in God this coming year who has a
- 7:10specific plan for our lives. It begins here.
- 7:13Notice in Romans chapter 12, one of those very familiar passages,
- 7:19but don't ignore the familiar passages.
- 7:21Actually pay attention to them because they're very important.
- 7:25Notice in verse one it says, I beseech you, therefore,
- 7:27brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present yourselves or
- 7:31your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which
- 7:36is your reasonable service. We're going to spend most of our
- 7:39time in verse one. But notice verse 2.
- 7:42And don't be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the
- 7:47renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and
- 7:51acceptable and perfect will of God.
- 7:55Now I know many of you are already praying God, what is
- 7:58your will for me in the new year?
- 8:00And I know the new year is just symbolic.
- 8:02It's just another day, but it's a powerful day because the the
- 8:06year changes. We have a brand new calendar.
- 8:08It has this symbolism of a fresh, clean slate.
- 8:12We look back, as Ian and I were just discussing, we look back on
- 8:152025, we see the UPS, we see the downs.
- 8:18We we watch the calendar year come and go.
- 8:21So take advantage of that fresh slate, new beginnings passes
- 8:26behind you, futures in front of you living out today.
- 8:30We can trust in God who has a specific divine plan for our
- 8:35lives and for your life that when the way to discover it is
- 8:39right here beginning in verse one, listening to the pleadings
- 8:43of Pastor Paul. Paul wrote this letter to
- 8:46believers in Rome and he begs them that word beseech.
- 8:52We don't use that word very much.
- 8:53You could write next to it. Beg, I beg you.
- 8:56You know how sometimes you come to someone and you really want
- 8:58to convince them, and you're just looking for words to try to
- 9:02convince them and just, well, please, please, I mean, I mean
- 9:04it. I'm serious about this.
- 9:06I beg you. I beg you to do this.
- 9:08I beg you to stop this. I beg you.
- 9:10That's where Paul is, I beseech you.
- 9:13But actually, it's also a familiar Greek word.
- 9:16You Bible students. When I say the word, it will
- 9:19immediately take you to another place in the Bible.
- 9:21This is the Greek word paracaleo.
- 9:24It is the same word that Jesus uses to describe the Holy
- 9:28Spirit. I will send another helper of
- 9:31paracletos. Well, this is the verb on
- 9:33paracaleo that it means to come alongside to help, to come
- 9:38alongside to help. Paul says I want I'm coming
- 9:41alongside of you as a pastor. I'm coming alongside of you as a
- 9:45friend. I'm coming alongside of you as a
- 9:48leader in God's church and how I can see that for myself today.
- 9:55I'm coming alongside of you as a friend, as a brother in the
- 9:59Lord, as a pastor, as a leader. I'm begging you, this is your
- 10:05future. If you want to hold on to it,
- 10:07you want to discover the will of God in your life.
- 10:09Do you want to know whether to go yes to the open door, closed
- 10:13door? Do you want to know if you go
- 10:14left or you go right? Then I'm begging you, listen to
- 10:17this passage and obey it. So what does he say?
- 10:21I beseech you, therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God,
- 10:28notice the basis of his plea. He comes alongside.
- 10:34Brothers and sisters, brethren, sister, and he comes alongside.
- 10:39But how does he plea? By the mercies of God.
- 10:43Consider the mercies of God. This is not a heavy-handed
- 10:46pastor. He's not using manipulation or
- 10:49guilt or trying to shame you into activity, said look, just
- 10:54take a step back for a second. If He was here today, perhaps
- 10:58you'd say just let's take a step back for a second as you look to
- 11:00a new year and consider how merciful God has been and how
- 11:05merciful He is. Now, if you're taking notes, I
- 11:08want to give you 3 words that you should know connected to the
- 11:12word mercy, Actually including mercy.
- 11:14For some of you, this will be a review, but for some of you,
- 11:17it's the very first time you put these 3 words together as it
- 11:20relates to how you view the character and nature of God,
- 11:24understand how He works with us. 3 words, judgment, mercy and
- 11:29grace. Judgment, mercy and grace.
- 11:33Let's define them so you understand them in their most
- 11:36simplest terms. First of all, judgement.
- 11:39Judgement is defined as getting what you deserve.
- 11:42That makes sense. That makes sense.
- 11:44If you have committed a crime and you've been found guilty and
- 11:48you're standing before the judge and the gavel comes down guilty
- 11:53and this is your sentence, you would be receiving what is just
- 11:58and right. You would be receiving
- 12:01judgement. This is the sentence.
- 12:03This is the penalty for that crime.
- 12:06Judgement. Judgement is you get what you
- 12:08deserve. Number 2 is the word mercy.
- 12:12When you think of mercy, I want you to think of it this way.
- 12:14Mercy is not getting what you deserve.
- 12:18When someone shows mercy or receives mercy, they do not
- 12:22receive what they deserve. For example, that same
- 12:27illustration in the courtroom. If you have been found guilty
- 12:30and the judgement is going to be set at a later date, when you
- 12:34come back for that later date, either you or your attorney will
- 12:38throw yourself on the mercy of the court.
- 12:43What does that mean? That means you're asking the
- 12:46judge. I know I did it.
- 12:47I am guilty, but please do not give me what I deserve.
- 12:52Give me a second chance. Allow me to work it out,
- 12:56whatever it may be. When you ask and receive mercy,
- 12:59you know, a little bit closer to home, if you grew up with
- 13:01siblings and you're wrestling and fighting and the whole deal
- 13:04is, hey, whoever wins gets punched, gets to punch the other
- 13:07one in the face, and there you are wrestling and you got them
- 13:10down and your arm is up like this when you're laying on the
- 13:14ground. You're not saying go ahead, I
- 13:15don't care. Hit me twice.
- 13:17Hit me No, your mercy, Mercy, Mercy.
- 13:20Why do? What are you asking for?
- 13:21I know I lost, but please don't hit me in the face.
- 13:24That's what you're saying. You cry out mercy.
- 13:26You don't ask for judgement. You don't ask for double
- 13:28judgement. You ask for mercy.
- 13:30Why? Because mercy is not getting
- 13:33what you deserve. And then the third word, grace
- 13:37is a beautiful word. In its most simplest terms, it
- 13:40means to receive something that you don't deserve.
- 13:44Judgement, getting what you deserve, Mercy.
- 13:46Not getting what you deserve grace, getting something that
- 13:50you don't deserve, the grace of God.
- 13:54Thinking of the blood of Jesus Christ that cleanses us from all
- 13:58sin and our rebellious nature begins.
- 14:01God and our sins have separated us from God.
- 14:05What does he do? He shows forth not with
- 14:07judgment, with mercy and grace. When Paul writes this, he says,
- 14:14I want you to consider my plea is based upon the mercies of
- 14:18God. You are still alive.
- 14:22You still have today, and I'm asking you to consider how
- 14:26gracious and merciful God has been to you.
- 14:31There is no greater incentive to holy and righteous living.
- 14:37There's no greater as an incentive to godly living than
- 14:41remembering and thinking upon the mercies and the grace of
- 14:44God. They're all tied together with
- 14:46the love of God where God he speaks forth in lamentations in
- 14:52chapter 3 and verse 22. It says though the Lord through
- 14:55the Lord's mercies. We are not consumed because his
- 15:00compassions fail. Now they are new every morning.
- 15:05Great is your faithfulness when Paul the whole the Holy Spirit
- 15:11through Paul appeals to us. He he doesn't say get your life
- 15:14right. Clean everything up, live a
- 15:17perfect life, and then maybe you can go the next step.
- 15:19But instead he says, think of God's mercies and worship Him by
- 15:24offering your whole life. He is worthy of your whole life.
- 15:29Don't ever forget this. The motive of serving God and
- 15:33yielding yourself to God, the motive in surrendering is always
- 15:38His mercy and grace. It's not guilt, it's not
- 15:41manipulation, it's always love true, a true connection in
- 15:46sacrificing God is a response. It's a response to all that he
- 15:49has done. That's where he's at.
- 15:51Says OK church, you're looking forward and what the future is.
- 15:56I'm begging you, come alongside of you by the mercies of God.
- 16:00Notice that you present your bodies a living sacrifice.
- 16:07That word present is the verb in this sentence.
- 16:11He says, with all of this, I want you to consider, I want you
- 16:14to understand, but here's the action.
- 16:16I want you to present yourself to God.
- 16:19Present yourself to God. The love of God moves us in ways
- 16:23that no one and nothing else ever can.
- 16:25And when you understand God's grace in your life and God's
- 16:29goodness in your life, when you see his hand moving in your
- 16:32life, you naturally are drawn to him.
- 16:35And now Paul says, I want you to present yourself to him.
- 16:37That's a technical term, by the way.
- 16:40It's a technical term that will tie us back to the book of
- 16:43Leviticus. When the priests were being
- 16:46instructed on how to offer the sacrifices to God, they were to
- 16:51present the animal on the altar. They were to present the animal
- 16:58on the altar where the animal would be completely consumed,
- 17:03completely burned and consumed as an offering to the Lord.
- 17:08Now, aren't you glad that's not what God's requesting here in
- 17:11the new covenant? You don't need to bring an
- 17:13animal and you yourself don't need to get on the altar and be
- 17:16burned and consumed. The new covenant now is for you
- 17:21and I to bring ourselves, present ourselves on the altar
- 17:25of worship, the altar of service, the altar of adoration,
- 17:29the altar of surrender, and stay alive and to live out your life,
- 17:36live out your surrendered life of obedience.
- 17:39That's the request. If you want to see substantive
- 17:43change in a new year, in any situation, there's going to
- 17:47require greater sacrifice on your part.
- 17:51I can use the phrase holding nothing back.
- 17:54It doesn't mean that we're going to be able to address every
- 17:55single situation. But I do know this.
- 17:58When you think of nothing, you have to also think of something
- 18:02that you're not willing to offer, something that's holding
- 18:07you back. Why?
- 18:09You can't describe yourself as surrendering fully or yielding
- 18:13completely to the Lord. You see, the animal being
- 18:17brought for sacrifice didn't have a choice.
- 18:19It's just, oh man, why did he pick me?
- 18:22I don't know what the animals thinking, but remember there
- 18:24were two on the Day of Atonement.
- 18:26There was one that would be presented on the altar, but
- 18:28there was that other one that the priesthood lay his hands on
- 18:31his head and then let him go. And the scapegoat would be able
- 18:35to run away, symbolically carrying the sins of the people.
- 18:38They could all watch the goat run away.
- 18:40And I'm sure the goat got halfway and go see you later.
- 18:44You know, However, goats, we, I don't know how they speak, but
- 18:47I'm sorry for you, buddy. You're going to the altar, but
- 18:49I'm out of here and here you are at the altar.
- 18:53The animals didn't have a choice.
- 18:54They got picked, they got carried, That's their, that's
- 18:58the way life was for them. But for you and for me, I have a
- 19:03choice. It is my choice.
- 19:06God has reserved for me that make choices to either worship
- 19:09Him or not, to present myself to Him or not, to obey Him or not,
- 19:15to surrender to Him or not. And how often we miss out on
- 19:19wonderful things because we're not willing to completely,
- 19:23totally yield ourselves. Isn't that what Jesus said?
- 19:27He looks out at Jerusalem and he's emoting over them.
- 19:31He's emotionally seeing the city.
- 19:34There's a place up on the Mount of Olives where you can see the
- 19:38entire city coming down in the Dome of the Rock there in the
- 19:41city of and I picture Jesus overlooking the city and going
- 19:45how often I wanted to gather you.
- 19:47He says like like a mother hen, her chicks, but you were not
- 19:53willing. How much we miss out on simply
- 19:57because we are not willing. We have reduced this dynamic,
- 20:02glorious relationship with God to something so much smaller
- 20:06than God ever intended, some religious expression.
- 20:10We've made it so many other things than the dynamic,
- 20:15salvific, powerful, leading and guiding presence of God in our
- 20:20lives. And we just present ourselves to
- 20:23Him. Lord, whatever you have for us.
- 20:25What is it that you have for us? The person, the person that gets
- 20:30in the way the most is ourselves.
- 20:35I know we give a lot of attention to other people and
- 20:38what they've done to us and all the difficulties in life and all
- 20:41the trials in life. I get that, but they are not the
- 20:44problem, we are. I want to give you a tool as
- 20:48you're ministering to people. It's something that I've noticed
- 20:50in my life, maybe the last 5-10 years, I don't know exactly, but
- 20:54as I'm talking with people and I'm listening to them, this just
- 20:57happened. Not only a month or two ago, I
- 20:59was talking to someone after service.
- 21:01One of those conversations where I say, hey, we should go sit
- 21:03down. We're sitting down on one of the
- 21:05rows here and I'm listening. I'm open to the Holy Spirit.
- 21:08I'm listening to how they're describing the situation.
- 21:11And then I pause and here's the tool.
- 21:13You can use it too. It's a very powerful tool.
- 21:16I stop in the conversation. I see it's pretty heavy.
- 21:19And then I say something like this, Hey, can I share something
- 21:23really hard with you right now? And almost always somebody will
- 21:27give me their permission. So sure.
- 21:30And I want that permission because I want to be able to
- 21:31connect because it is going to be hard.
- 21:34And in this particular one, I'll let you in on exactly what I
- 21:36shared. I said it, it, it, it sounds
- 21:39like, it sounds like you're acting really selfish right now.
- 21:45Have you seen that in your life? And they they were talking to me
- 21:48about a very difficult, they were grieving and I could sense
- 21:55they're becoming very selfish in their grief.
- 21:58You go, pastor, how could you say I don't think I ever want to
- 22:00sit down with you? Like, how could you say that?
- 22:03Well, I'll tell you how I could say that.
- 22:05I know what it's like to be a grieving man who's incredibly
- 22:08selfish. I speak from experience.
- 22:13God has given me a sensitivity to this.
- 22:16And I wanted to draw them out faster than I got out because it
- 22:20is a very familiar when you're wounded, when you're hurt, when
- 22:24you're struggling, when you're, you know, you're living in this
- 22:27world, when you're dealing like maybe like Paul with the thorn
- 22:29in the flesh, It's a temptation to become very self focused.
- 22:35You're not anywhere near Romans chapter 12.
- 22:38You're not thinking about the mercies of God.
- 22:40You're thinking about how you've been wounded, how you've been
- 22:42hurt. You're thinking about all this
- 22:44isn't fair. This is wrong, especially if you
- 22:45have a high level of justice. And and then when that cycle of
- 22:49self, it just doesn't end, It doesn't end.
- 22:54And before you know it, you're either surrounded by no one
- 22:57because it's very hard to be around, that you're either
- 23:00surrounded by no one or only other people that are as bitter
- 23:04as you are. And that doesn't help.
- 23:09And perhaps even the Holy Spirit today is using hard words.
- 23:12I forgot to ask if it's OK for you.
- 23:14Is it OK? But I already did.
- 23:16So I'm sorry, I already shared the hard words.
- 23:18But this is the freedom day for you.
- 23:20You don't need to be in a place like you have to even sit back
- 23:24and go. Have you been considering the
- 23:25mercies of God? Because if you haven't, look
- 23:27where it's LED you, you're upset, you're bitter, it's not
- 23:33getting you where you you're, you're not experiencing the
- 23:35healing or the comfort of God. I don't know how long the
- 23:38journey is going to be, but I do know this.
- 23:40On the journey, there's more pain, more difficulty, more
- 23:43hardship. But on the journey, there can
- 23:46also be more in your relationship with God.
- 23:49Because when you think of Paul, when he had that thorn in his
- 23:52flesh, it we got this episode in his life, we don't know how long
- 23:55he dealt with it. We don't know.
- 23:56We don't know all the details. We just get this little moment
- 24:00recorded for us in Second Corinthians, this little moment
- 24:02where the Bible says he cried out three times for the thorn to
- 24:05be removed. And the answer was, my grace is
- 24:08sufficient for you because my strength is made perfect in
- 24:10weakness. Really the answer was no, I'm
- 24:12not removing it. But through this, Paul, through
- 24:15this, I want you to know something.
- 24:20You came to the right place through this.
- 24:24It's brought you to the end of yourself.
- 24:27Have you heard that phrase before?
- 24:28The end of yourself? You can understand now why you
- 24:31don't want to live in a cycle of self.
- 24:37You want to get out of yourself and to the Lord.
- 24:40That's where Paul is here. And I don't know if it's pain, I
- 24:43don't know if it's difficulty. I'm not quite sure, but for that
- 24:47brother that I was speaking with, that's where it was.
- 24:49And there's life. It was a point of turning a
- 24:52corner, receiving a dose of healing from the Holy Spirit and
- 24:57learning that it is hard and it is sad and great.
- 25:01Loss is just so overwhelming for sure.
- 25:07But God doesn't want you. He doesn't want me stuck in
- 25:11myself. He's the source of hope.
- 25:15He's the source of strength. I think of every broken marriage
- 25:19here, he's your help. I think of every prodigal kid
- 25:22here, he's your help. I think of in your singleness,
- 25:25wondering what the future. He's your help, He's your help.
- 25:29Therefore, by the mercies of God, brethren, present your
- 25:33bodies a living sacrifice. We don't die physically, but we
- 25:40die spiritually. We die to ourselves.
- 25:43We come back to a very simple lesson that Jesus said, if
- 25:48anybody wants to follow me, what did he say?
- 25:52Deny yourself. Listen again.
- 25:57In a short Bible study, it's easy to be a misunderstood, so I
- 26:01want to clarify the best that I can.
- 26:04You don't pretend you're hurt. You're not hurting.
- 26:07You don't just dismiss your feelings.
- 26:09Maybe somebody's giving you that counsel and just get over it,
- 26:12that's all. That's not from the Lord.
- 26:15And if any man or woman's giving you that counsel, that's just
- 26:17silly. Don't listen to them.
- 26:20But here is good counsel from the Lord.
- 26:24Present yourself, your body, a living sacrifice to the Lord.
- 26:29Go to him, carry yourself to him.
- 26:32Let somebody carry you. I wonder.
- 26:36So I met a brother in an earlier service who's here today because
- 26:39somebody brought you. Because it's time to heal, man.
- 26:43What a great friend to have. What a great mom to have.
- 26:47Or dad, it's going to bring you to a place of healing church for
- 26:52the new year. It's so important.
- 26:54You bring your hurts, you bring your pains, you bring your
- 26:56difficulties, you bring them to the Lord as a living sacrifice
- 27:02over and over. Notice what He says as well.
- 27:06He says that you present your bodies, your bodies.
- 27:10You notice that present your bodies.
- 27:13He doesn't say lives, even though I've said it a few times.
- 27:16He doesn't say minds or resources or money or
- 27:20possessions. He says present your bodies.
- 27:23Why? Well, your body, my body, the
- 27:26Bible declares, is the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 27:29Let me change it a little bit. Your body and my body is home
- 27:34base for the operation of the Holy Spirit through your life.
- 27:37That's why it's important to take care of our bodies, to be
- 27:40healthy, to eat well, to exercise, to take care of our
- 27:44bodies because it is home base. It's home base for the Lord to
- 27:49use. You present that body to the
- 27:51Lord. We already learned.
- 27:53Now we studied Romans many years ago, but turn back to chapter
- 27:57one. Let me show you because if you
- 27:58put the book, the one of the reasons you'd study through the
- 28:01Bible verse by verse is it becomes its own commentary and
- 28:04the Bible actually speaks to things.
- 28:06And already in chapter 1, Paul had talked about the using
- 28:10bodies sinfully. He says don't do that.
- 28:14And he used sexual sin as the example, but it could be
- 28:16anything idolatry, any type of sin.
- 28:18Chapter 1 Romans verse 24. Notice he says therefore, God
- 28:23also gave them up to uncleanness in the lusts of their hearts to
- 28:28dishonor. What does your Bible say?
- 28:30Their bodies. Your bodies can be used in a
- 28:34dishonouring way, and your bodies can be used in an
- 28:39honouring way before the Lord. In this case, it's sexual sin.
- 28:44If you're involved in sexual sin, it's unclean dishonouring
- 28:48to God, and it's not good for you either.
- 28:52It's not good for you either. That's a different Bible study
- 28:54altogether, he says in Romans 12.
- 28:56I want you to present your bodies to Lord living sacrifice
- 28:59over and over and over and over living sacrifice.
- 29:05You're the temple of the Holy Spirit.
- 29:08We've been redeemed, and our bodies are being used for great
- 29:12things on the earth. Feet that walk, hands that reach
- 29:16out, mouths that speak. I'm reminded in the Bible of
- 29:20many examples of God using the body, physically, the body to
- 29:26bring great blessing to others. I think of Moses, his mouth.
- 29:29When we were studying the life of Moses, we were introduced to
- 29:32Moses with he had a speech impediment.
- 29:35We don't quite know what it is. He, he, he said he was slow of
- 29:38speech. He could have had a stuttering
- 29:40issue. He could have had a difficulty
- 29:42finishing sentences. It was a very normal, very
- 29:46common speech impediment, but God used that mouth as it was to
- 29:51stand before Pharaoh and Purdue and and pronounce the judgement
- 29:56of God upon the nation for all that they have done to the
- 29:59children of Israel. He used that mouth.
- 30:02He can use your mouth too. I think at the hand of David.
- 30:05He was just a kid, just a kid, but a very important kid.
- 30:10He presented his hand to the Lord, and in his hand was a
- 30:13sling that he with a rock in it that he found with his hand, and
- 30:19he took down the Goliath, while all the people, the adults
- 30:23behind him stood in fear. David, God used David's hand to
- 30:28bring victory. I think of the feet of Paul.
- 30:31The feet of Paul, the body of Paul took the gospel throughout
- 30:36the entire region. The known world set a fire of
- 30:40the gospel just through his faithfulness of obeying the
- 30:44Lord. Now, of course, in the Bible
- 30:46there are examples of bodies that were not devoted to God.
- 30:49Cain used his hands to kill his brother.
- 30:53We read of that same David as he grew up.
- 30:56His eyes looked with adultery on them and with Bathsheba, and
- 31:01then he used his mouth to pronounce death upon her
- 31:05husband. Not good Moses.
- 31:08Moses slayed the Egyptian with his hands.
- 31:10So not we're not, we're not perfect in our bodies, but it's
- 31:15important that we obey the New Covenant and present ourselves
- 31:18to God. A living sacrifice, greater
- 31:21sacrifice. Notice what it says.
- 31:23This is holy and acceptable to God, and it's reasonable.
- 31:27It's your reasonable service. It's almost like this is the
- 31:30baseline, this is the bottom, this is the beginning.
- 31:33It's reasonable. God is reasonable.
- 31:35He's not asking for an unreasonable.
- 31:37I can't believe that's not fair. You can't say that with God.
- 31:39It's it's very fair. It's reasonable.
- 31:42He redeems, he forgives, he enlists us in ministry.
- 31:46He gifts us, helps us, strengthens us, lives in US,
- 31:49comes alongside of us. It's very reasonable that our
- 31:52response is here I am Lord. I'm here to serve, love, care,
- 31:58whatever you have for me. My life belongs to you no matter
- 32:02what comes my way. We don't have time to develop it
- 32:06today, but I want to give you one more thing that holds so
- 32:10many people. There's a lot of things that are
- 32:11held back, but one area in particular that holds so many
- 32:15back from giving themselves completely to the Lord.
- 32:18You ready? You might want to write it down.
- 32:20Fear. You're afraid.
- 32:24You're afraid of what might happen if you finally surrender.
- 32:30You're afraid, and that comes from a lot of different areas,
- 32:33maybe the home you were raised in or maybe you were wounded in
- 32:36a church or by a leader or, you know, they've got all these
- 32:38little speed bumps along the way that stop you from getting all
- 32:43the way to the God who you can completely trust.
- 32:46I think of our sister Michelle, you know, as you, she's like, I
- 32:49have a Hartford, Guatemala. I think I'll go there.
- 32:52And she takes a step of faith and goes there for a small
- 32:55little commitment, quits her job here in the States, moves out
- 32:58just for a small little commitment and not quite sure
- 33:00what God's going to do and not sure if it's going to be
- 33:02complete. She will come back from those
- 33:04trips and I'm like, wow, what are you going to do?
- 33:06I think I'm going to go back. I'm not.
- 33:07I said we need to pray about you going back.
- 33:10That's what we need to pray about because this is the
- 33:12direction God's taking you. And we need to pray through this
- 33:14fear and we need to pray through these concerns and we need to
- 33:17have our eyes wide open. But let's just present our every
- 33:20time you say let's pray, you're presenting yourself to the Lord.
- 33:22Let's just pray about this. We need to pray.
- 33:24We need to see if God and so through the person.
- 33:26OK, I'll go back for another short time.
- 33:28I'll go back now. Now the shorter time is a longer
- 33:30time and you know what happens when you do a little, a little,
- 33:33a lot, a lot, a lot. You live a life that pleases
- 33:36God. You just keep coming back to the
- 33:38Lord obeying you keep coming back and obeying, but I know
- 33:42there's a lot of fear. Well, what would happen if well,
- 33:46how about this just step out in faith and then you could be
- 33:50fearful after the fact. It's like, oh, this is all
- 33:54what's going on and the Lord goes I'm with you.
- 33:57Be anxious for nothing. Philippians chapter 4, but in
- 34:00all things by prayer and supplication with Thanksgiving.
- 34:05I don't know about you, but whenever I I memorize that verse
- 34:07years and years ago, but when I quoted only the last few years
- 34:12have I caught it. But the last few years I've
- 34:14really tried to train myself to quote it properly because I had
- 34:17always quoted it without a keyword in in involved, like
- 34:21there's a keyword there that I always skip.
- 34:23And now it's in my mind. I don't want to skip it anymore.
- 34:25And that's the word Thanksgiving.
- 34:28You know, when you come with your fears to the Lord, you come
- 34:31in prayer. That's kind of a general word to
- 34:33pray, talk to God. Supplication is, is like a, a
- 34:37word that describes praying for others and requests.
- 34:41So you're coming to God, just coming to him like Paul did.
- 34:43Look, you know, I have this word.
- 34:44I'm just coming to you. I don't want it.
- 34:47I don't like it, but I'm coming to you.
- 34:49And then you have the supplications.
- 34:50You're praying for yourself, but you're also praying for others.
- 34:53But then Thanksgiving, God, you've been so good to me.
- 34:57You've been so faithful. Prayer has to be a time where
- 35:01you look back on the mercies of God.
- 35:03Prayer has to include times where you truly express your
- 35:08appreciation for all that God has done.
- 35:11This supersedes all church hurt. This supersedes all issues with
- 35:16people. All the family drama that we
- 35:19have in our lives. And I know family drama is fresh
- 35:22on our minds right now because we just finished the holidays.
- 35:26And I realize that's challenging, but church, you
- 35:29made it through another holiday. You made it through another
- 35:33holiday and you represented the Lord.
- 35:35Well, at least most of you did. Most of you did.
- 35:39Some of you probably struggle, but God still now you, you're
- 35:41like you struggling, made a made a mistake, maybe said something.
- 35:44And then you don't have to beat yourself up.
- 35:46You just take it to the Lord and then go apologize.
- 35:49What? Yeah.
- 35:50Present yourself a living sacrifice and just apologize.
- 35:54So I let the most you know, I you took the last, you know,
- 35:58spoonful of potatoes that really ticked me off.
- 36:02But you always taking whatever could be more serious than that
- 36:06where you learn to walk in forgiveness, where you learn to
- 36:10receive all that God has for you so you can be a light in someone
- 36:14else's life. You got a new year ahead Church.
- 36:18I know in my life I want I want more.
- 36:23I want more of what God has for me.
- 36:25I happen to be a little bit different situation than most in
- 36:28the sense that I have more years behind me than I have ahead of
- 36:32me. So I want those years to mean a
- 36:35lot. I want more faithfulness, not
- 36:38less. I don't want to coast through
- 36:40because I've got years behind me.
- 36:42I want to be more of an example. I want to see more sacrifice in
- 36:46my life. I want to see more obedience.
- 36:49And I realize that it starts right here for me, but it also
- 36:52starts for you. This is the change right here, a
- 36:56greater appreciation of the mercies of God that's followed
- 37:00by greater sacrifice. And this is where I'm going to
- 37:03end. Would you turn over to
- 37:04Deuteronomy, Deuteronomy chapter 6?
- 37:08I want to read this so encouraging as we enter into a
- 37:12close the chapter on a previous year, but enter into a new year.
- 37:17I want to pick up with you in Deuteronomy chapter 6.
- 37:20In verse one we're going to read straight through.
- 37:23Part of this is the Shema, the prayer that would be prayed
- 37:29every day. It's the great Shema.
- 37:32It's a beautiful prayer. But let's start in verse one.
- 37:35Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and the
- 37:39judgments which the Lord your God has commanded to teach you,
- 37:43that you may observe them in the land which you were crossing
- 37:47over to possess. That you may fear the Lord your
- 37:50God to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I
- 37:56command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days
- 38:03of your life, and that your days may be prolonged.
- 38:07Verse 3. Therefore hear, O Israel, and be
- 38:11careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that
- 38:15you may multiply greatly, as the Lord God of your Father's has
- 38:19promised you, a land flowing with milk and honey.
- 38:23Here's the Shema. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our
- 38:27God, the Lord is 1 you shall love the Lord God with.
- 38:32And you might want to mark these words.
- 38:34Jesus quoted this in the New Testament.
- 38:37All your heart, with all your soul and with all your might,
- 38:45and these words which I command you today shall be in your
- 38:47heart. You shall teach them diligently
- 38:50to your children and shall talk of them when you sit in your
- 38:53house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and
- 38:56when you rise up, you shall bind them as a sign on your hand.
- 39:00They shall be as front that's between your eyes, and you shall
- 39:03write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
- 39:08Father, our hearts desire is the all part that we would present
- 39:13ourselves a living sacrifice. All the animal, all would be
- 39:18placed on the altar. And I'm grateful that you sent
- 39:22Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the
- 39:25world to be on the altar for us. That you're not requiring a
- 39:29physical surrender, but a spiritual.
- 39:34That we would not hold anything back from you.
- 39:37And I know we can't give it all at once like because there's
- 39:39still things you're showing us in our hearts and in life and
- 39:42we're going from glory to glory. But like what's being held back?
- 39:46God, it's time to come to you with open hands to claim our
- 39:50marriage before you. Our singleness, our kids, our
- 39:54finances belong to you. Our houses, our homes, our
- 39:57clothes, our lives, our friendships, they all belong to
- 40:01you, our parents, our in laws. Our step parents, you know, our
- 40:09boyfriends, girlfriends, fiancees, all of that, that all
- 40:13belongs to you, Lord. I don't know which area needs to
- 40:16be surrendered to you, but I pray that those that are
- 40:20fearful, those that are hesitant, those that maybe are
- 40:25just still fighting, that you would release them or they've
- 40:28come to you and obey you, present themselves a living
- 40:32sacrifice, present themselves committed to you.
- 40:39And as we're praying, I just want to encourage you before we
- 40:42leave for the last time, this service that if you've never
- 40:46given your life to Jesus Christ, you need to do that.
- 40:50Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 40:52He died according to the Scriptures and he rose again
- 40:55according to the scriptures. And because of our sin, we've
- 40:59separated ourselves from God. The wages of sin is death, but
- 41:03the gift of God is eternal life. Maybe there's someone here today
- 41:09that would say I need Jesus. I have this big hole in my heart
- 41:14I've tried to fill with all these other things.
- 41:16Everything has been going on, but today's the day.
- 41:22Today's the day you come. Listen, if you want your sin
- 41:24forgiven, if you want to know that when you die you'll go to
- 41:27heaven, if you want Jesus Christ to come into your life right
- 41:31here, right now, wherever you are, would you just stand to
- 41:33your feet? I want to pray with you that
- 41:36today would be that day. Just stand.
- 41:40And then someone's going to come alongside of you.
- 41:42I'll explain the whole thing to you.
- 41:44Someone's going to come alongside of you.
- 41:45One of our pastors or leaders, God bless you in the back and
- 41:48they're going to stand with you and you're going to feel their
- 41:50presence because I want you to know you're not alone in this
- 41:55large church. You're not alone.
- 41:57God bless you that you're part of the family of God.
- 42:01I see you in the back that today is that day the Bible actually
- 42:07describes. And I know as you come to
- 42:09Christ, you don't understand everything.
- 42:10You don't need to understand everything.
- 42:12You're going to learn right now God's just giving you life.
- 42:16You're going to learn how to breathe, how to love God with
- 42:19your life. But the Bible says that you get
- 42:22adopted into the family. That's a pretty powerful thing.
- 42:27It's not just a church here thing, it's a church everywhere
- 42:30thing. You're a part of the family.
- 42:33Who else would say that's me? Just before we leave?
- 42:36It's important that I give you this chance and the reason
- 42:39you're standing, that all that does is give you a public
- 42:44proclamation. I guess it's a public choice, a
- 42:49public response for a very public life you're going to
- 42:52live. Anyone else?
- 42:54I realize you guys on the radio we don't see you, but God sees
- 42:57you. Out online we don't see you, but
- 43:01God does. Downstairs in our overflow room
- 43:04or in the cafe area. There God sees you.
- 43:08But in the room here, we get to see it and we get to be a part
- 43:12of it. The Bible says if you confess
- 43:15with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and you believe in your heart
- 43:18that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 43:22God bless you in the back, you will be saved.
- 43:26This is a work of salvation, young and old, young and old,
- 43:36doesn't matter the work of Jesus in your life.
- 43:40So let me help you with the confession.
- 43:43You can ask God to forgive you of your sins.
- 43:45You could say, Lord Jesus, I know that I'm a Sinner, but I
- 43:51also know that you are a Savior and I believe you live for me,
- 43:59died for me. You died on the cross to forgive
- 44:03me of my sins, and I choose to follow you today because you are
- 44:12alive. You rose again from the dead.
- 44:18Thank you for your forgiveness and your help.
- 44:25I need your help and I want your help to turn away from my sin.
- 44:30And Father, I know anyone anywhere that comes to you.
- 44:33The very first thing I think of is you don't cast them away.
- 44:38So those that came standing, those that came sitting, those
- 44:41that came driving, we don't know, laying down somewhere in a
- 44:45hospital room or in a jail cell, those that came to you, you
- 44:49don't turn them away. And our prayer is, is that
- 44:52their, their prayer today was genuine, real and sincere and
- 44:57the beginning of generational change in their lives.
- 45:01And to church together we pray in Jesus name, Amen.
