- 0:05Speaker 1: Dataway.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Matt Quatraro is the manager of the Kansas City Royals
- 0:10Speaker 2: back on foul Territory and Matt, it's great to talk
- 0:12Speaker 2: to you. Happy offseason to you for a little bit
- 0:14Speaker 2: more time, I'll say now future longtime manager of the
- 0:19Speaker 2: Kansas City Royals after your extension, congratulations on that, and
- 0:23Speaker 2: of course we want to start there. Tell us how
- 0:24Speaker 2: it all went down and how excited you are to
- 0:26Speaker 2: lead the next great Royals teams.
- 0:29Speaker 3: Yeah, I appreciate it. Thanks for having me first of all,
- 0:32Speaker 3: you know, and happy new year to everybody. But yeah,
- 0:35Speaker 3: I mean, I don't know if I could be more excited,
- 0:37Speaker 3: you know. I mean, you get you get an opportunity
- 0:40Speaker 3: like this to to manage the Royals, and you know,
- 0:43Speaker 3: when you when it's your first job, you're not exactly
- 0:45Speaker 3: sure that's going to go. And our first year went
- 0:48Speaker 3: pretty badly, I would say, And but you know, just
- 0:51Speaker 3: the relationships especially, you know that I've been able to
- 0:53Speaker 3: build with JJ and Scott Sharp in the front office
- 0:56Speaker 3: and obviously with the players, and it's just a great
- 1:00Speaker 3: place to be. I love living here. My family, we
- 1:02Speaker 3: moved here, we've enjoyed every minute of it. And uh,
- 1:05Speaker 3: I feel very fortunate for the opportunity to get to
- 1:08Speaker 3: stay for a few more years.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Everybody loves Kansas City. There's just no Overland Park. Wherever
- 1:13Speaker 4: you live, the whole area is just it's great. Even
- 1:16Speaker 4: though you're gonna get a new stadium soon, but we
- 1:17Speaker 4: won't talk about that. You are so like even keel.
- 1:21Speaker 4: You're You've always been a very even keel person, even
- 1:24Speaker 4: when you know you were you were the raise when
- 1:26Speaker 4: I was over there, very even keel. When you get
- 1:30Speaker 4: this extension, and obviously it's not just like you pick
- 1:33Speaker 4: up the phone and they go, hey, we're giving you
- 1:35Speaker 4: an extension, you go, whoa. But when it finally gets
- 1:39Speaker 4: pen to paper, when it finally happens, how do you celebrate?
- 1:43Speaker 4: What is your reaction? Who is more excited or who
- 1:46Speaker 4: is the most excited because you got to I know
- 1:49Speaker 4: I've seen you laugh, so that's cool. Like, but you're
- 1:52Speaker 4: very stoic and just you know, everything's fine. We lost
- 1:55Speaker 4: fifty we won fifty games, or we won ninety games
- 1:58Speaker 4: in the same queue. What how did you guys celebrate?
- 2:02Speaker 3: You know, I'll be honest with you. I mean, the
- 2:03Speaker 3: first thing that goes through my mind is my parents.
- 2:06Speaker 3: You know, obviously my wife and I are going through
- 2:08Speaker 3: this process talking with JJ and stuff. But you know,
- 2:11Speaker 3: my parents are are gone now. But when I think
- 2:15Speaker 3: about just all the you know, like every like all
- 2:18Speaker 3: of us, right, our parents bring us to these to
- 2:21Speaker 3: the to the field all the time, and they dedicate
- 2:24Speaker 3: all these hours. And you know, I always had a
- 2:26Speaker 3: dream of making it as a player, which I didn't do,
- 2:28Speaker 3: but you know, to hear my dad's voice and about
- 2:32Speaker 3: you know, when you when you get there, when you
- 2:34Speaker 3: get there, and you know, it was never a doubt
- 2:36Speaker 3: for him. I mean he thought it would be as
- 2:38Speaker 3: a player, so he was a bad scout, but just
- 2:40Speaker 3: the opportunity to get to the big leagues as a
- 2:43Speaker 3: coach and now to manage I just think about them
- 2:47Speaker 3: and obviously my family. I mean, so what did we
- 2:49Speaker 3: do to celebrate.
- 2:50Speaker 2: We did.
- 2:50Speaker 3: We high five. My kids were excited. They they've told
- 2:53Speaker 3: me prior to this, you know, they've they've said, hey, Dad,
- 2:56Speaker 3: we don't want to move again, you know, because they
- 2:57Speaker 3: moved three times in three years or four years, whatever
- 3:00Speaker 3: it was. And I said, well, I mean some of
- 3:03Speaker 3: that's out of our control, but you know, they love
- 3:05Speaker 3: it here, and so We were all excited and we
- 3:08Speaker 3: talked to them about it. They're a little young to
- 3:10Speaker 3: understand all of it, but I mean, you know, asking
- 3:12Speaker 3: them if they wanted me to keep doing this and
- 3:15Speaker 3: all those kinds of things and just making them part
- 3:17Speaker 3: of the process. But my wife and I are really
- 3:19Speaker 3: excited about it. You know, we celebrated, we went out
- 3:22Speaker 3: to dinner. We tied it in with her birthday, so
- 3:25Speaker 3: we went out to dinner and we had a good time.
- 3:28Speaker 5: Let me ask you this. I mean, at a lot
- 3:30Speaker 5: of coaches managers when they first come up, they have
- 3:33Speaker 5: everything in their mind what they really want to do,
- 3:35Speaker 5: and there's certain philosophies. Is there something that you really
- 3:38Speaker 5: rely on on the philosophy wise coming into spring training
- 3:41Speaker 5: or is it kind of the same message every year?
- 3:44Speaker 5: Is it the same? You know, we're a World Series team,
- 3:47Speaker 5: this and that. How do you strive to get these
- 3:49Speaker 5: guys better? And what are what are some philosophies that
- 3:51Speaker 5: you have as a manager that you know not many
- 3:54Speaker 5: people know about you, about the whole situation of being
- 3:57Speaker 5: a manager.
- 3:58Speaker 3: I don't know if there's anything that different than the
- 4:01Speaker 3: other managers that you know, and I think you know,
- 4:04Speaker 3: I've learned from some good managers. I was around Joe
- 4:07Speaker 3: Madden and Tito and Cash and those guys a lot,
- 4:09Speaker 3: and I've taken a lot from them. And but beyond
- 4:12Speaker 3: anything else, it's all about you guys as the players, right.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I mean, I don't have this job, I don't have
- 4:17Speaker 3: this opportunity. I can't coach any baseball, regardless of the level,
- 4:21Speaker 3: without the players. So the thing I try to do
- 4:24Speaker 3: better every year is learn the learn about the players
- 4:27Speaker 3: more on a deeper level and and encourage them to
- 4:30Speaker 3: learn about each other as teammates, because I really believe
- 4:33Speaker 3: in that. I believe that the more you care about
- 4:36Speaker 3: the people that are around you, the more you're willing
- 4:37Speaker 3: to go to battle with them.
- 4:39Speaker 1: And I think those are the things.
- 4:41Speaker 3: That we're trying to improve on here because I think
- 4:44Speaker 3: those are things that help us win on the margins.
- 4:46Speaker 3: So no, I don't have some philosophy that if we,
- 4:49Speaker 3: you know, achieve this many doubles or this many homers, whatever,
- 4:53Speaker 3: because you see game teams every year that they win
- 4:56Speaker 3: different ways, and I think that's our goal is to
- 4:59Speaker 3: win whatever it takes every night.
- 5:02Speaker 4: All right, So the best to get the most out
- 5:05Speaker 4: of players, how can we give vinp to think April
- 5:08Speaker 4: is July because we just had vinnip on And he goes,
- 5:12Speaker 4: if I can figure out this whole April thing, I
- 5:14Speaker 4: think I could do pretty well, and he also, I'm gonna,
- 5:16Speaker 4: I'm gonna. I'm gonna couple that with he said he's coming,
- 5:20Speaker 4: You're coming to see him in Nashville. Is that because
- 5:23Speaker 4: you want to go to Nashville because Nashville's fun? Or
- 5:26Speaker 4: is that because you want to lift weights with vinnip
- 5:29Speaker 4: and hit with Vinip?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Well, I'm a little smarter than that, Cratzy. I challenge
- 5:34Speaker 3: him to a race. That's the one thing I'm not lifting,
- 5:37Speaker 3: not swinging, none of the things that I can't do.
- 5:40Speaker 3: So no, I that's one of the ways that we're
- 5:44Speaker 3: talking about, like trying to get to know players better.
- 5:46Speaker 3: And I'm you know, I've been around Vinnie a few
- 5:48Speaker 3: years now, but it's not just me, it's our our
- 5:50Speaker 3: whole staff tries to get out and see a lot
- 5:52Speaker 3: of guys. You know, we don't, by any means get
- 5:54Speaker 3: to everybody, but I think that's that's one of the
- 5:57Speaker 3: ways they get to know us better, we get to
- 5:59Speaker 3: know them better. We can talk about things when it's
- 6:01Speaker 3: not the heat of the moment and you know, I'm
- 6:04Speaker 3: giving you a day off today and everybody's mad and
- 6:07Speaker 3: you got reason with what's going on. But when things are,
- 6:11Speaker 3: the pressures not on as much and you can just
- 6:13Speaker 3: get to talk about stuff that's baseball or life, and
- 6:17Speaker 3: I think that's what's important.
- 6:19Speaker 4: All right, Well, you said it yourself, you're not going
- 6:22Speaker 4: to visit Arikrats in the offseason. How do you deal
- 6:25Speaker 4: with the fact that you're not going to get to everybody?
- 6:29Speaker 4: How do you deal with those hurt feelings when all
- 6:33Speaker 4: of your players are watching and you see that you're
- 6:35Speaker 4: going to visit Vinnie p. But you're not going to
- 6:37Speaker 4: see you know, you're not going down to see mikel
- 6:41Speaker 4: Garcia who just got some extra cash. Like, how do
- 6:44Speaker 4: you deal with that? Because I love what you're doing.
- 6:47Speaker 4: I think the connection part is what you dominate with
- 6:50Speaker 4: and that's the best way to be the best manager,
- 6:52Speaker 4: mess man, best you know brother out there on the field.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think some of it is logistics,
- 6:59Speaker 3: right Mike Kel. I don't think any of us are
- 7:01Speaker 3: going down to Venezuela right now to check things out.
- 7:04Speaker 3: But you know, we also talk to the guys like, hey,
- 7:08Speaker 3: do you do you think it's important for us to
- 7:10Speaker 3: come see you? Like, especially on the pitching side, some
- 7:12Speaker 3: of the guys are so into their routines, you know,
- 7:15Speaker 3: Brian Sweeney and those guys. They talk to all of
- 7:17Speaker 3: them like, I don't know. I think of a like
- 7:20Speaker 3: a Michael Waka, like he's been doing this for fourteen
- 7:23Speaker 3: years or however long. He's got his routine and we
- 7:26Speaker 3: know we're going to see him, and you know he
- 7:28Speaker 3: doesn't It's not something that moves the needle for him
- 7:31Speaker 3: as much, so to speak. But so we're somewhat calculated
- 7:35Speaker 3: in it. But also there's plenty of guys that aren't
- 7:38Speaker 3: our everyday guys that we're going to see.
- 7:42Speaker 4: Talk about Mikeel talk about Michael Garcia. I brought him
- 7:46Speaker 4: up there and he got an extension. Is this the
- 7:50Speaker 4: only way that America was ever going to see how
- 7:52Speaker 4: good MIKEL Garcia was by the fact that he got
- 7:54Speaker 4: an extension? And then people start looking at his stats
- 7:57Speaker 4: and go, I mean, Baseball Show, we saw it. I
- 8:00Speaker 4: We've seen it for a little while. But is this
- 8:02Speaker 4: really the only way they would have seen it? And
- 8:05Speaker 4: is there more.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Well?
- 8:07Speaker 3: I hope it's not the only way, because I mean
- 8:09Speaker 3: the playoffs. A couple of years ago, he showed out
- 8:11Speaker 3: pretty well on a big stage, you know, playing the Yankees,
- 8:14Speaker 3: So hopefully people were were paying attention, and hopefully we
- 8:18Speaker 3: get to get more opportunities like that. But I don't
- 8:22Speaker 3: think that's the only way, and I don't and I
- 8:24Speaker 3: do think there's more. I mean, I think that's the
- 8:25Speaker 3: beauty and locking a guy up at the beginning of
- 8:28Speaker 3: his career, because you do think there's more. If if
- 8:31Speaker 3: we thought he had hit his ceiling, I'm not so
- 8:34Speaker 3: sure that would be the kind of guy that you're
- 8:36Speaker 3: that you're trying to tie up. I think I think
- 8:38Speaker 3: he's you know, he's I think two years now, playing
- 8:42Speaker 3: a new position. Gold Glove winner, you know, he saw
- 8:46Speaker 3: the jumping offense last year, and I think that goes
- 8:49Speaker 3: with the physicality that he's dedicated himself in the in
- 8:51Speaker 3: the weight room, and like a lot of guys, you
- 8:53Speaker 3: grow into your power, but also growing into learning how
- 8:58Speaker 3: to be a big leaguer and take lumps and come
- 9:01Speaker 3: back the next day and be the same guy. And
- 9:03Speaker 3: we're seeing that right in front of our eyes, and
- 9:06Speaker 3: it's it's a lot of fun. So I think I
- 9:08Speaker 3: think we've kind of scratched the surface, but I think
- 9:10Speaker 3: he's there's a lot more there.
- 9:13Speaker 5: Another pickup you had Matt Strom left hand or with
- 9:16Speaker 5: the Phillies, Can you talk a little bit about why
- 9:19Speaker 5: he's a good fit for your organization and what you
- 9:21Speaker 5: guys thought and saw there as his career most forward.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean he's an original draft from the Royals,
- 9:27Speaker 3: so that they knew him well here. Obviously we've seen
- 9:30Speaker 3: what he's done the last few years in Philly. You know,
- 9:33Speaker 3: you got to have a deep bullpen. You got to
- 9:35Speaker 3: have guys that he's left handed, but he's gonna have
- 9:37Speaker 3: to face a lot of tough right he's we know
- 9:39Speaker 3: how that goes. Right, He's gonna come in games in
- 9:41Speaker 3: high leverage, whether that's the sixth, seventh, eighth, wherever it is,
- 9:45Speaker 3: and we got to we got to be able to
- 9:47Speaker 3: get the key hitters in the middle of the lineup
- 9:49Speaker 3: out and we think he can do that. You know,
- 9:51Speaker 3: he's a guy that we have a good culture in
- 9:54Speaker 3: our bullpen and he's a guy that from everything we
- 9:56Speaker 3: know about him that he's going to fit right in
- 9:58Speaker 3: there and be a key piece for us.
- 10:01Speaker 5: I want to go back to the management part a
- 10:03Speaker 5: little bit. I love, I just love you know, the
- 10:05Speaker 5: game within the game. What do you as a manager,
- 10:08Speaker 5: what do you think is one of the hardest things
- 10:10Speaker 5: to manage? You know, during a game, Like what is
- 10:12Speaker 5: the hardest process? You know, you're going through the situations
- 10:15Speaker 5: in the game. You might have a clear position when
- 10:18Speaker 5: you will use this guy here, Uh, we got this
- 10:20Speaker 5: guy at the bat in case this goes, this happens,
- 10:23Speaker 5: or they bring this guy in. What do you think
- 10:25Speaker 5: is the hardest thing as a manager to face, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 5: when you're within the game.
- 10:31Speaker 3: For me, it's it's no question, it's taking the starter
- 10:33Speaker 3: out and when to do it or when to give
- 10:35Speaker 3: him that extra hitter, you know, especially with the veteran
- 10:38Speaker 3: guys we have, like the Wakas and Lugos and Bovich
- 10:42Speaker 3: and those guys, and Cole Reagan's a little different, little
- 10:45Speaker 3: different animal. But like to me, it's when when when
- 10:48Speaker 3: you go to the bullpen. That's the toughest thing every
- 10:51Speaker 3: night because you can you know, they're generally, especially the
- 10:54Speaker 3: guys I'm talking about their strike throwers, so their pitch
- 10:56Speaker 3: counts aren't generally really high at those key leverage moments,
- 11:00Speaker 3: and if they do get through it, they might go
- 11:02Speaker 3: two more innings. And if they don't, then you know,
- 11:05Speaker 3: it blows up on you. And so you think about
- 11:07Speaker 3: every there's so many factors as you're saying the game
- 11:10Speaker 3: within the game, you know who's rested, who's thrown two
- 11:12Speaker 3: out of three, you know who we playing tomorrow, and
- 11:15Speaker 3: what's their lineup look like, and all those kinds of things,
- 11:18Speaker 3: And so just trying to balance that one decision is
- 11:22Speaker 3: generally the hardest thing for me every night.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Well, you worked with Cash.
- 11:26Speaker 4: You work with Kevin Cash, so we can totally see
- 11:29Speaker 4: you didn't agree with him by how you handle your bullpen.
- 11:32Speaker 4: So I'll make sure cashy Cash's never come on the show.
- 11:35Speaker 4: So he's not a big show guy, I guess, not
- 11:37Speaker 4: like you. But anyway we can tell how you use
- 11:40Speaker 4: your bullpen. You didn't quite agree with the way that
- 11:43Speaker 4: Cash used Blake Snow in the World Series.
- 11:47Speaker 3: I was wondering where you were going. I was wondering
- 11:50Speaker 3: where you were going with like decision making there. All right,
- 11:52Speaker 3: all right, I see where you're going.
- 11:54Speaker 2: As he's been on the show. He's been on the showy, Yeah,
- 11:58Speaker 2: everybody's been on the show. It's for years and three guests.
- 12:01Speaker 4: That I haven't. I wasn't on. I wasn't on when
- 12:03Speaker 4: he was on.
- 12:03Speaker 3: So that's there. He was ducking you.
- 12:07Speaker 4: That's probably what it was, all right. Last last one
- 12:10Speaker 4: from me, the ABS Challenge system. How are you going
- 12:14Speaker 4: to or how have you guys as coaches talked about
- 12:18Speaker 4: deploying it throughout your lineup or even your pictures. I'm
- 12:22Speaker 4: just gonna say, I prefer no pictures challenge anything, but
- 12:26Speaker 4: or even with or even with Salvey behind the dish,
- 12:29Speaker 4: or if you have to bring up a young rookie
- 12:31Speaker 4: catcher behind the dish who may have more experience with
- 12:34Speaker 4: the ABS system than like, how are you guys or
- 12:37Speaker 4: what conversations have you guys had about it?
- 12:40Speaker 3: A lot, you know, and they're going to be ongoing.
- 12:42Speaker 3: I mean, we're going to rely a lot on the
- 12:44Speaker 3: experiences of the guys that have been in Triple A
- 12:46Speaker 3: the last few years, because you know, we saw it
- 12:49Speaker 3: briefly in spring training last year, and we get to
- 12:51Speaker 3: look at the the iPad, you know, between innings and
- 12:54Speaker 3: all that kind of stuff, and we generally know, you know,
- 12:57Speaker 3: speaking to Salvey that he's really aware of what the
- 12:59Speaker 3: strike zone is, so we're going to trust him. But
- 13:03Speaker 3: to your point, yeah, I think it'll be tough to
- 13:05Speaker 3: really rely on the pitchers to you know, there'll be
- 13:08Speaker 3: a couple guys that you might feel good about. But
- 13:11Speaker 3: we're going to do a lot of talking with the
- 13:13Speaker 3: R and D department the leverage and understanding when to
- 13:16Speaker 3: use it. And I mean, I think it's one of
- 13:17Speaker 3: those things there that we're not going to know who's
- 13:20Speaker 3: good at it until we really get into it. So
- 13:22Speaker 3: we're going to try to simulate as many things as
- 13:23Speaker 3: we can in spring training on the backfields that he
- 13:27Speaker 3: looks at it as we can so guys can get
- 13:29Speaker 3: comfortable with it. I mean I remember last spring the
- 13:32Speaker 3: big league guys like Salvey in particular, when he was hitting,
- 13:35Speaker 3: he was very like sheepish about even trying it, you know, like,
- 13:38Speaker 3: well should I really do I want to make the
- 13:40Speaker 3: umpire mad or you know, like nobody knew what to do.
- 13:43Speaker 3: But now that it's here to stay, we have to
- 13:46Speaker 3: get good at it because there's going to be some
- 13:47Speaker 3: advantage to be had there and understanding the right time
- 13:50Speaker 3: of game to use it. So yeah, great questions we
- 13:54Speaker 3: don't know exactly how it's gone unfold, but we're spending
- 13:57Speaker 3: quite a bit of time trying to figure it out.
- 14:00Speaker 2: Are you gonna be mad if there's someone low in
- 14:02Speaker 2: the lineup that uses their last one in a game
- 14:05Speaker 2: and then an inning or two later, Bobby's up and
- 14:09Speaker 2: you're like, he just got squeezed.
- 14:12Speaker 1: This is not well.
- 14:12Speaker 3: If that guy low in the lineup gets Bobby up
- 14:15Speaker 3: one more time by winning that challenge, I think I'll
- 14:17Speaker 3: be all right with it.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Right, you can do it right. I know you're gonna
- 14:21Speaker 2: say you can do it, but you better be right.
- 14:24Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 14:24Speaker 3: Well, I mean that's it's interesting. I mean, you guys
- 14:28Speaker 3: that have stood in the box and the big lees,
- 14:30Speaker 3: you know, I mean, you just know it's just a
- 14:32Speaker 3: matter of whether it's gonna click that you know that
- 14:35Speaker 3: one scene hits that one corner and it's it's a
- 14:39Speaker 3: fine line. I mean, that's why it's so hard to umpire.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I mean, those pitches are are so close all the
- 14:44Speaker 3: time with that nasty movement. So I wish I had
- 14:47Speaker 3: a great answer of like we're gonna do this, but
- 14:50Speaker 3: I don't have that answer.
- 14:52Speaker 4: You still getting thrown out this year. I mean, they
- 14:54Speaker 4: have taken everything away from you to have a chance
- 14:57Speaker 4: to get thrown out because you can't argue balls of
- 14:59Speaker 4: strang ikes. You can't argue you know, replay is there?
- 15:03Speaker 4: So is it going to be a foul to what?
- 15:06Speaker 4: How are you going to get thrown out this year?
- 15:07Speaker 4: Besides the.
- 15:09Speaker 3: Somebody brought it to my attention. I'm not exactly sure
- 15:12Speaker 3: how many I have, but of the injections I have,
- 15:15Speaker 3: like eighty percent of them are on the blocking the base,
- 15:20Speaker 3: the obstruction calls, on the slide and and I guess
- 15:24Speaker 3: I just it's it just flips my switch. Man, I
- 15:26Speaker 3: get out there. I know I'm going to be gone.
- 15:28Speaker 3: But it's like you know, when you see Bobby or
- 15:31Speaker 3: Tolbert or somebody sliding into second. That's what gets me going.
- 15:38Speaker 2: Hey, I wanted to ask you about the off season.
- 15:41Speaker 2: So what do you think held you guys back last year?
- 15:45Speaker 2: And do you feel like it's been accomplished so far
- 15:47Speaker 2: with the additions?
- 15:50Speaker 3: Well, I mean, I think there are a couple of things.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Last year, you know, we got bit by the starting
- 15:54Speaker 3: pitching injury bug, and then that even trickled down to
- 15:58Speaker 3: the guys that we were expecting to be the guys
- 15:59Speaker 3: to re place the guys that got injured, so that
- 16:01Speaker 3: that was tough the offensive side, you know, I think
- 16:05Speaker 3: we have addressed some of it. I mean, you get
- 16:07Speaker 3: you get a guy like Collins that is an on
- 16:10Speaker 3: base guy, uh, a switch hitter. We get you know,
- 16:14Speaker 3: a healthy version of of Jonathan India, I think is
- 16:17Speaker 3: going to be a big boost for us. You get
- 16:19Speaker 3: a Laine Thomas who can help spell Izzy in center
- 16:22Speaker 3: field at times and both and play other play both
- 16:25Speaker 3: corners above average and and provide some thump in the
- 16:29Speaker 3: lineup as well. So I think those additions in the
- 16:31Speaker 3: outfield and plus you know, we're looking forward to full
- 16:34Speaker 3: seasons of of Carter Jensen and and cag Leo and
- 16:38Speaker 3: and those guys you know, in healthy seasons too from
- 16:42Speaker 3: guys you know like Michael Massey. We're hopeful that he's
- 16:45Speaker 3: he's back and and those guys can can really supplement
- 16:49Speaker 3: what's going on with the middle of the order.
- 16:53Speaker 4: All right, again, my third to fourth last question, that's
- 16:59Speaker 4: case barbicue.
- 17:00Speaker 3: You man, it's I gotta go with Q thirty nine.
- 17:04Speaker 3: I've really started to like that one.
- 17:07Speaker 1: Boom there you go, and.
- 17:08Speaker 4: For you free, free for you now for the rest
- 17:10Speaker 4: of the year. Yeah, and a commercials Q Q is here,
- 17:16Speaker 4: like yeah, like it fits.
- 17:18Speaker 3: I should have gone with that jersey number when I came.
- 17:20Speaker 2: On thirty nine Q thirty nine.
- 17:25Speaker 1: That's right. Yeah, Q loves Q and Q.
- 17:28Speaker 2: That is really the last question there from Kratz, and
- 17:30Speaker 2: we did give him some leeway since he did play
- 17:33Speaker 2: for Casey, so the alum gets a little bit of
- 17:35Speaker 2: a pass, right.
- 17:36Speaker 4: All right, I was here, I didn't play. I was there, I.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Didn't play either way. Thank you so much for joining us, Matt,
- 17:43Speaker 2: really appreciate the time. Congrats on the extension, and we
- 17:46Speaker 2: will see you in spring training.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Thank you, guys.
- 17:49Speaker 2: Hunter Harvey joining us right now, fresh off signing a
- 17:52Speaker 2: contract with the Chicago Cubs, part of a bullpen that's
- 17:55Speaker 2: actually really been rebuilt with a number of signings this offseason. Hunter,
- 17:59Speaker 2: great to have you on the show. Thanks for the time, Man,
- 18:00Speaker 2: congrats on the deal. Tell us how it went down.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Thank you. I appreciate you having me.
- 18:05Speaker 6: It was it was definitely a different process for me
- 18:09Speaker 6: used to just doing the arbitration stuff and all that,
- 18:11Speaker 6: so having all the teams reach out it was definitely different,
- 18:14Speaker 6: but it was fun, It was exciting.
- 18:16Speaker 4: Well, you said all the teams, I love to hear
- 18:19Speaker 4: that we.
- 18:20Speaker 1: Had a couple, not all, we had a few. We
- 18:22Speaker 1: had a couple of we had a couple.
- 18:24Speaker 4: So was it so was it like Todd and Todd
- 18:26Speaker 4: and high school? What problem when all the girls were
- 18:28Speaker 4: asking him out?
- 18:29Speaker 3: Or was it like.
- 18:32Speaker 4: Okay, okay, so he didn't have anybody asking him out?
- 18:37Speaker 2: So hey, what did the teams tell you? Hunter? Sorry,
- 18:41Speaker 2: real quick, crats, what did what did some of the
- 18:43Speaker 2: teams tell you? Just to like kind of generalize, it
- 18:46Speaker 2: is cool, like you said, to get calls of teams
- 18:48Speaker 2: that are interested in working with you versus just talking
- 18:51Speaker 2: to one team and going through arbitration, which is kind
- 18:53Speaker 2: of the opposite of that where you're kind of battling
- 18:55Speaker 2: over your price. So like, what what kind of things
- 18:57Speaker 2: did you hear? And is it cool to hear the complements?
- 19:01Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean I was super surprised. I mean after
- 19:04Speaker 6: last year, I mean I threw ten innings, so I
- 19:09Speaker 6: was not expecting as much interest as I had, So
- 19:12Speaker 6: that always was fun. But yeah, you know, just a
- 19:14Speaker 6: lot of teams showed interest and it just kind of,
- 19:16Speaker 6: you know, just built the confidence a little bit knowing
- 19:19Speaker 6: that you know, people still wanted you after after not playing,
- 19:22Speaker 6: so it was fun.
- 19:25Speaker 4: And how does that how does that process work for
- 19:28Speaker 4: you in the sense of U and the season, You're like, dang,
- 19:32Speaker 4: I could have I could have had a couldn't have
- 19:34Speaker 4: had a not a worse, but like, I couldn't have
- 19:36Speaker 4: had a couldn't have played less in my platform year
- 19:39Speaker 4: to become a free agent than I did this year.
- 19:42Speaker 4: At what point after the World Series ended that you
- 19:45Speaker 4: were like, wait a minute, Okay, okay, they do think
- 19:49Speaker 4: I'm good.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Well, it was I don't know when exactly, maybe later November.
- 19:56Speaker 6: My agent told me he'd had, you know, quite a
- 19:58Speaker 6: few teams reach out, and I was like, oh, hey,
- 20:00Speaker 6: I'm surprised, because, you know, once again, once it ended,
- 20:03Speaker 6: I was like, well, we're going to to just you know,
- 20:05Speaker 6: get what we can get here and try to come
- 20:07Speaker 6: back this year and be healthy. And then obviously, you know,
- 20:11Speaker 6: we had a lot of interest shown. I mean, I
- 20:14Speaker 6: was completely surprised, to be honestly, I didn't think we're
- 20:16Speaker 6: gonna have that much. But uh, yeah, it was probably
- 20:18Speaker 6: late in November my agent started saying they had a
- 20:21Speaker 6: lot of calls so it was, and then after the
- 20:22Speaker 6: winter meetings it really started heating up.
- 20:26Speaker 5: Let me ask you this. You were throwing ninety six
- 20:29Speaker 5: in twenty twenty two, and then eventually you're hitting ninety
- 20:32Speaker 5: eight the year after. We see these stories all the
- 20:34Speaker 5: time where guys all of a sudden developed faster fastballs
- 20:37Speaker 5: and velocity, and I'm just curious, is like, what were
- 20:42Speaker 5: the steps to make that faster? Was there anything you
- 20:44Speaker 5: did or just you going out there and all of
- 20:46Speaker 5: a sudden, I'm throwing ninety eight. Now, watch out, average watch.
- 20:50Speaker 6: I used to start and I didn't throw as hard
- 20:53Speaker 6: as a starter. I remember well the first time I
- 20:56Speaker 6: threw hard, I was in double A and a guy
- 20:58Speaker 6: named Zach muckinhearn. He told me, because I was trying
- 21:02Speaker 6: to figure ot what to do down there, I've never
- 21:03Speaker 6: been in the bullpen, he said, you grab that little
- 21:05Speaker 6: white ball and he said, you throw it as hard
- 21:07Speaker 6: as you can. And I said, all right, well, I
- 21:08Speaker 6: can give that a whirl and see what happens. And
- 21:11Speaker 6: I eventually tried that and I just all of a
- 21:14Speaker 6: sudden started throwing hard. I said, I had this the
- 21:16Speaker 6: whole time as a starter, and I'm out here throwing
- 21:18Speaker 6: ninety two.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I said, this is crazy.
- 21:20Speaker 6: So yeah, it was just I didn't do anything different.
- 21:22Speaker 6: I just tried to throw hard and threw harder, So
- 21:24Speaker 6: it was kind of crazy.
- 21:27Speaker 2: Are you into pitch metrics? And I mean, hey, you
- 21:30Speaker 2: should be into it even if you're not paying too
- 21:32Speaker 2: close of attention to it, because it's part of why
- 21:35Speaker 2: you get a lot of phone calls like this. I mean,
- 21:37Speaker 2: it's no secret. We also could just talk in normal terms.
- 21:39Speaker 2: You've got stuff, right, You've got big stuff.
- 21:41Speaker 1: You know that.
- 21:42Speaker 2: I mean, you were a top pick while back. So
- 21:45Speaker 2: how much does that come up in a conversation when
- 21:48Speaker 2: you're talking to teams during free agency or even just
- 21:51Speaker 2: now right like with KC, Hey, we love what you have.
- 21:54Speaker 2: Of course you got to work on making sure that
- 21:56Speaker 2: you're on the field to be able to do it.
- 21:57Speaker 2: But how much does that come up? Because the modern
- 21:59Speaker 2: stats really help your case, like we look and go, Okay,
- 22:03Speaker 2: a full season of Hunter Harvey in a bullpen could
- 22:05Speaker 2: mean basically a high leverage reliever closer type.
- 22:09Speaker 1: Yeah, we I don't.
- 22:10Speaker 6: I don't think many of the meetings I had we
- 22:12Speaker 6: talked about stuff as much as I think. Obviously the
- 22:15Speaker 6: battle is, you know, keep me on the field. So
- 22:18Speaker 6: I think everybody it's, you know, trying to give me
- 22:21Speaker 6: ways to keep me healthy. And you know, the Cubs
- 22:24Speaker 6: kind of stood out for me when I had my
- 22:26Speaker 6: meeting with them, because I wanna be honest, I never
- 22:28Speaker 6: I didn't think I was ever gonna end up in Chicago.
- 22:31Speaker 6: I'm not big on living in the city, and they
- 22:34Speaker 6: kind of won me over, so it was nice.
- 22:37Speaker 4: How are they going to keep you on the field.
- 22:38Speaker 4: I want to hear this stuff because that's that's what
- 22:40Speaker 4: we just talked about it earlier.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Hey, I don't know yet.
- 22:45Speaker 6: I know I've been talking a lot with Tyler's Ombro
- 22:48Speaker 6: and he's, uh, I mean, he's a really good mind.
- 22:51Speaker 6: I mean he's He's already thrown a lot of good
- 22:53Speaker 6: stuff at me just from a pregame routine.
- 22:56Speaker 1: Any all my routine.
- 22:57Speaker 6: He wants to add some stuff, and then I told him,
- 23:02Speaker 6: anything you got, hey, I'll give it a whirl at least.
- 23:04Speaker 6: I mean, the worst case is we don't like it,
- 23:06Speaker 6: so I mean, we'll try whatever we can do to
- 23:10Speaker 6: stay healthy. So we'll see. I'm not sure what all
- 23:12Speaker 6: they got they got lined up for me, but I'm excited.
- 23:15Speaker 4: That was gonna be my next question, how far will
- 23:18Speaker 4: you go to stay healthy? Because honestly, all that stuff,
- 23:21Speaker 4: all that stuff, if you believe it, it will work.
- 23:26Speaker 4: If you don't, you know, people were like, oh, you know,
- 23:28Speaker 4: I played with a guy Chris bout Check. He would
- 23:31Speaker 4: ice his arm before the game and he was our
- 23:34Speaker 4: closer and by the ninth inning he was like, my
- 23:36Speaker 4: arm felt great, he said, So I iced my arm
- 23:38Speaker 4: before every game. I'm like, dude, that's crazy. Obviously I'm
- 23:41Speaker 4: not You're not gonna do anything like that. But do
- 23:44Speaker 4: you believe this stuff that Zambro was telling you? Because
- 23:47Speaker 4: if you do, to me, I think that's where you
- 23:50Speaker 4: take the next step and you're out there for sixty appearances. Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 1: Hey, I told him.
- 23:56Speaker 6: He actually came up and watched me throw a bullpen
- 23:57Speaker 6: yesterday and I told him, I said, after a meeting
- 23:59Speaker 6: with you, I said, I. I said, y'all jump well
- 24:02Speaker 6: up my list. I said, I wanted to work with you.
- 24:04Speaker 6: I wanted to work with everybody y'all have in Chicago
- 24:07Speaker 6: because I just felt like it was gonna be a
- 24:09Speaker 6: really good opportunity for me to just maximize everything and
- 24:13Speaker 6: stay healthy. So I mean just I don't know, you know,
- 24:17Speaker 6: maybe it's just a way he said things. I don't know,
- 24:20Speaker 6: but he he won me over pretty quick.
- 24:22Speaker 4: All right, talk about living in the city, because honestly,
- 24:25Speaker 4: nobody's everybody can listen on the This is podcast and video,
- 24:29Speaker 4: but for everybody's own podcasts. We got a real no
- 24:33Speaker 4: real tree. We gotta we got a hunting hat, we
- 24:35Speaker 4: got some catal on like there, the accent, they can
- 24:39Speaker 4: hear you're not from Chicago. I'm just I'm not going
- 24:42Speaker 4: to go from there. Everyone else can make their own
- 24:44Speaker 4: judgments based on you know, everything. But what is that?
- 24:49Speaker 4: How are you going to navigate that? Because you played
- 24:52Speaker 4: you played in Kansas City, correct, Baltimore?
- 24:54Speaker 1: Yep, Yeah, well both Baltimore and Casey.
- 24:57Speaker 6: I was able to get outside of the city a
- 25:00Speaker 6: little bit, so it's not a lot of people, but
- 25:03Speaker 6: it's a little bit different.
- 25:04Speaker 1: Obviously in d C.
- 25:06Speaker 6: We didn't get out of We stayed outside the stadium,
- 25:08Speaker 6: so we we just had to grind through it for
- 25:11Speaker 6: a couple of years.
- 25:12Speaker 1: But it's the same thing here, you know, it's part
- 25:14Speaker 1: of it. It's part of the job. You gotta just
- 25:16Speaker 1: gotta just gotta.
- 25:17Speaker 6: Grind through living around all them big buildings and all
- 25:21Speaker 6: the people.
- 25:21Speaker 1: So we'll make it work. It'll be fun.
- 25:23Speaker 6: So I've heard nothing but good things about playing for
- 25:26Speaker 6: the Cubs, So I'm I'm pretty excited, to be honest
- 25:28Speaker 6: with you.
- 25:29Speaker 4: But like, but there's there's always a place. I mean,
- 25:32Speaker 4: you know in d C. I I used to live
- 25:34Speaker 4: in Virginia. You get outside to northern Virginia a little bit,
- 25:38Speaker 4: you can get into some hunting, you can you know,
- 25:40Speaker 4: you could have called in Baltimore. You could have called
- 25:42Speaker 4: Josh Hater up. He's got some landing in Maryland. It's
- 25:45Speaker 4: got some of the biggest, biggest buck you'll ever see
- 25:48Speaker 4: stricken outdoors. But like, so in Chicago, what does that
- 25:54Speaker 4: look like for you? Do you say I don't want
- 25:56Speaker 4: an apartment near the field, Like, I'm fine dry thirty
- 26:00Speaker 4: minutes in if I can live in a place that
- 26:03Speaker 4: has a yard. What does that look like for you
- 26:05Speaker 4: as a player?
- 26:07Speaker 6: I'm fine driving in now my wife and the two kids.
- 26:10Speaker 6: I don't know if she wants to drive in every day,
- 26:12Speaker 6: So more likely we're gonna end up being right beside
- 26:15Speaker 6: the stadium, just like we were in DC. So she
- 26:19Speaker 6: likes men in the country as well, but she ain't
- 26:21Speaker 6: too big on traffic, so we're gonna stay close where
- 26:25Speaker 6: she can get to the field easy.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Probably they have a ton of nice apartments, like walking
- 26:30Speaker 2: distance to Wrigley and if you're gonna be there for
- 26:32Speaker 2: a season, and then of course you'll hit free agency
- 26:34Speaker 2: again after that. That's what I recommend, right That DC
- 26:37Speaker 2: actually built that up a ton. I mean I remember
- 26:40Speaker 2: going there ten fifteen years ago and there was like nothing,
- 26:42Speaker 2: and now I mean there's probably twenty apartment buildings all
- 26:46Speaker 2: around that area, and you see most of the players
- 26:48Speaker 2: just walking to the park. I mean, that's the dream
- 26:50Speaker 2: for during the season, because you maximize the time at home.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Right. Yeah, it made it real easy there, especially.
- 26:56Speaker 6: I think our airport in DC was like an hour away,
- 26:59Speaker 6: so if we were coming back from the West Coast,
- 27:01Speaker 6: we're getting in at freaking four and five in the morning.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Like you, I don't really want to drive anywhere. It's
- 27:05Speaker 6: when I walked two minutes and I was in bed,
- 27:08Speaker 6: so that made it easy.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I like it. Hey, can you give us more of
- 27:14Speaker 2: a glimpse of your story. I mean, you know, we
- 27:16Speaker 2: got a little time, but I think it's important. There's
- 27:19Speaker 2: so many young pitchers that listen to our show. We
- 27:22Speaker 2: got a lot of college kids and even before that,
- 27:24Speaker 2: who will listen and say, Okay, Hunter Harvey, good story.
- 27:27Speaker 2: We have a lot of the guys on who will say, hey,
- 27:28Speaker 2: I came out of nowhere. You're twenty thirteen first round pick.
- 27:32Speaker 2: But it's not like everything came easy for you. So
- 27:35Speaker 2: can you kind of describe some of the highs and
- 27:37Speaker 2: lows of what's gotten you to this point.
- 27:40Speaker 6: Yeah, it's been a it's been a it's been a journey.
- 27:42Speaker 6: That's a that's a fact. Obviously, coming up with Baltimore,
- 27:45Speaker 6: I had a lot of injuries there. It felt like
- 27:48Speaker 6: everything I did I heard something. So that was a
- 27:51Speaker 6: that was a grind. The crazy thing is I think
- 27:54Speaker 6: it was I popped my shoulder out of place in
- 27:56Speaker 6: twenty eighteen. I just in the dugout line driving there,
- 28:00Speaker 6: I jumped out of the way, popped my shoulder out.
- 28:02Speaker 6: Pretty much ended my season. And then I remember telling
- 28:06Speaker 6: my dad that Austin I was like, I think, I'm
- 28:08Speaker 6: I think I'm just gonna be done. Like I don't
- 28:10Speaker 6: even want to I'm.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Tired of it, you know, I don't I don't really
- 28:12Speaker 1: want to do this anymore.
- 28:13Speaker 6: I'm hurt every two months, like I think I'm just done.
- 28:17Speaker 6: And he told me that Offting's like, hey, just give it,
- 28:19Speaker 6: you know, give it another year or two, just see
- 28:21Speaker 6: what happens. He's like, he's like, we're close. He's like,
- 28:23Speaker 6: just keep trying. I was like, all right, I'll give
- 28:25Speaker 6: it a whirl. And then obviously the next year I
- 28:29Speaker 6: ended up getting moved to the bullpen. I got moved
- 28:31Speaker 6: to the bullpen, and it, you know, just changed my career.
- 28:34Speaker 6: I went from my velo jumps. I was in the
- 28:38Speaker 6: big leagues a month and a half after going to
- 28:40Speaker 6: the bullpen, like it just and obviously just from there,
- 28:44Speaker 6: I hadn't really looked back.
- 28:45Speaker 1: I've battled injury still, but.
- 28:47Speaker 6: I've been able when I'm healthy to pitch decent enough
- 28:50Speaker 6: to stay in the big leagues. And that's just kind
- 28:51Speaker 6: of it's been a that's probably been the highlight is
- 28:55Speaker 6: you know, just going to the bullpen just completely turned
- 28:59Speaker 6: my career around for me.
- 29:00Speaker 5: Really, let me ask you this, all of a sudden,
- 29:04Speaker 5: your dad doesn't tell you that, and you're like, boom,
- 29:06Speaker 5: I'm done with baseball. What would be your next step?
- 29:09Speaker 5: I mean, do you have anything in mind or was.
- 29:12Speaker 1: It just I got no clue.
- 29:16Speaker 6: We would have we would have figured something out. I'd
- 29:19Speaker 6: have started a land cleaning business. We'd have done something
- 29:21Speaker 6: here in a figured out. We've been working outside for sure,
- 29:24Speaker 6: But uh, I got no.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I don't know about truck driving. Just point out.
- 29:32Speaker 5: I know, but he could stop wherever he once and
- 29:34Speaker 5: then you know that looks like right there, you know.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Yeah, it worked out.
- 29:39Speaker 6: I'm just glad he told me to try another year
- 29:41Speaker 6: or two because it ended up working out real good
- 29:42Speaker 6: and we didn't have to get another job.
- 29:44Speaker 1: So it worked out.
- 29:45Speaker 5: Give him a big hug every time you see him.
- 29:47Speaker 1: Yeah, oh yeah, Well he doesn't let me live it down.
- 29:50Speaker 4: So what about a playoff team? All right? You had
- 29:57Speaker 4: all these teams calling the fact that the Cubs were
- 30:01Speaker 4: in the playoffs last year, You saw the Royals in
- 30:04Speaker 4: the playoffs in twenty four. How much does that go
- 30:07Speaker 4: into it, especially since you know you were with the
- 30:10Speaker 4: O's then you were the Nats, Like, how much does
- 30:13Speaker 4: that go into it? Or is that something that you're
- 30:15Speaker 4: kind of like, well, I'll experience it when I experience it.
- 30:20Speaker 6: I mean that was for me one of the I
- 30:23Speaker 6: mean it was pretty high up on my list and
- 30:24Speaker 6: stuff I was looking for.
- 30:26Speaker 1: Obviously, you know, I needed to be somewhere.
- 30:28Speaker 6: It was a good opportunity, but you know, I didn't
- 30:31Speaker 6: want to go somewhere where I knew for a fact
- 30:34Speaker 6: I was going to get traded in you know, four months.
- 30:37Speaker 6: I wanted to be somewhere that we were winning, cause,
- 30:40Speaker 6: I mean we had we made the best of each
- 30:43Speaker 6: season in Baltimore and inn you know, DC. We had
- 30:46Speaker 6: a good group of guys, so we just you know,
- 30:47Speaker 6: tried to enjoy it as much as we could.
- 30:50Speaker 1: But obviously, when I got traded to KC and they.
- 30:52Speaker 6: Were winning and then we got to go to the
- 30:54Speaker 6: playoffs and experience it, there's nothing. There's nothing like it,
- 30:57Speaker 6: Like that was a blast. And then even last year,
- 31:00Speaker 6: you know, we were around five hundred, but it was
- 31:02Speaker 6: just exciting all year.
- 31:04Speaker 1: We were in the push the whole time. It was
- 31:06Speaker 1: just it's fun.
- 31:06Speaker 6: It's way more fun to go to the field knowing
- 31:10Speaker 6: you got a chance to keep on going. So I
- 31:13Speaker 6: mean one of the Cubs, I mean, my couple of
- 31:15Speaker 6: teams I was looking at. That was one of the
- 31:17Speaker 6: main things, Like I wanted to be on a good
- 31:18Speaker 6: team I luckily had enough teams that reached out.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I was able to choose between a few.
- 31:24Speaker 6: Good ones, and I just felt like opportunity wise, just
- 31:28Speaker 6: all the people there, and then obviously they're good.
- 31:30Speaker 1: The Cubs was just an easy choice.
- 31:33Speaker 2: Yeah, you're gonna have fun there, and they had a
- 31:35Speaker 2: really fun bullpen last year and some talented guys that
- 31:38Speaker 2: ended up actually going elsewhere. They got paid in free agency.
- 31:41Speaker 2: But then they've put another I think it's thirty some
- 31:43Speaker 2: odd million into five or so relievers this offseason. So
- 31:46Speaker 2: you got some big boys joining it. You'll have some help,
- 31:48Speaker 2: but they're not gonna call you every day, which also
- 31:51Speaker 2: helps the costs. Right, That probably part of the combo. Hey,
- 31:54Speaker 2: we invested in our bullpen, so we are not going
- 31:56Speaker 2: to overuse the arm.
- 31:59Speaker 1: Yeah, that's part of it.
- 32:01Speaker 6: I done told him if he as long as I'm
- 32:03Speaker 6: out there, you can call as much as you need to.
- 32:05Speaker 1: I'll be ready. I like that. I like that. All right.
- 32:08Speaker 2: Question for you, I think I have this right from
- 32:11Speaker 2: your Baltimore days. Mountcastle was one of your buddies there, right,
- 32:14Speaker 2: you were in his wedding. Yeah, yeah, did you see
- 32:18Speaker 2: see his news today? Do you send a guy a
- 32:19Speaker 2: text when I mean he settled in arbitration too, so
- 32:22Speaker 2: he got himself I think, like a cool seven million
- 32:24Speaker 2: bucks today.
- 32:26Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'll text him later.
- 32:28Speaker 6: Maybe we're uh, we're that's why, you know, that's you know,
- 32:34Speaker 6: another reason I decided just to stay in the National League.
- 32:36Speaker 6: I only got to play him once. That's a I
- 32:39Speaker 6: think it's more luck than anything. But yeah, he's he's
- 32:42Speaker 6: gotten a few times so.
- 32:44Speaker 1: And he'll let you go. Last year.
- 32:46Speaker 6: I finally got him last year and I let how
- 32:48Speaker 6: war him out about it. So yeah, the first couple
- 32:52Speaker 6: of times he got me pretty good.
- 32:55Speaker 4: That's good. That's good. Is there? Do you try to
- 32:57Speaker 4: find a way to mimic the adrenaline rush You've talked
- 33:02Speaker 4: about the bullpen ringing, and I'm like, I have to
- 33:05Speaker 4: ask this. The adrenaline rush of that phone going.
- 33:12Speaker 1: I'm fine until my name's called.
- 33:14Speaker 6: Once they call my name, it's a it's like you
- 33:16Speaker 6: just you turn into a whole different animal. You see,
- 33:20Speaker 6: You're ready to run through the wall once it's your time.
- 33:22Speaker 6: So that for me, that's when I went to the
- 33:24Speaker 6: bullpen and started hearing that in the big leagues, that's
- 33:27Speaker 6: probably like one of the most fun things for me
- 33:29Speaker 6: is just getting caught, especially obviously late in the game,
- 33:32Speaker 6: games on the line, something like that, any kind of
- 33:34Speaker 6: situation where you got to stop the other team from
- 33:37Speaker 6: pretty much beating you, because I mean it's the end
- 33:39Speaker 6: of the game. That for me, that's the there's just
- 33:42Speaker 6: nothing more fun than that.
- 33:44Speaker 2: On our way out here, Hunter, can you give us
- 33:47Speaker 2: a twenty to eighty grade on Kratz's bullpen phone noise
- 33:50Speaker 2: because he loves to throw that out there?
- 33:52Speaker 1: Hey, that's that is that's top tier right there. That's
- 33:55Speaker 1: pretty good. Sure, right like, yeah, that's up there. It's
- 33:59Speaker 1: pretty good.
- 34:01Speaker 2: Best weapon exactly as a broadcaster like Kratzy is very
- 34:07Speaker 2: good at mimicking things.
- 34:08Speaker 1: Yes, yes, he's pretty solid.
- 34:09Speaker 2: That one day we can do the South well he
- 34:11Speaker 2: played for k C the Salvey do you want to
- 34:13Speaker 2: say by and Salve.
- 34:14Speaker 4: Kratz or I could have a whole conversation of Hunter
- 34:17Speaker 4: Harvey talking to Salvage on Paris at the Mound and
- 34:22Speaker 4: goes fla baseball luga because you know Harvey Harvey Oh
- 34:27Speaker 4: is good. Hey man, Salve, I don't understand any words
- 34:30Speaker 4: that you're saying ever coming out of you. Why are
- 34:33Speaker 4: you even coming to the mound. Man, I'm just gonna
- 34:35Speaker 4: throw the absolute snot out of the ball. My dad
- 34:37Speaker 4: told me a million dollar arm one time. God, million dollars,
- 34:42Speaker 4: but it's okay.
- 34:45Speaker 1: Yeah. One funny thing about k C.
- 34:47Speaker 6: When I first signed over there, our PitchCom was Salvey's
- 34:50Speaker 6: calling the pitches in the PitchCom like his voice and yeah,
- 34:54Speaker 6: and it threw me off. The first time. I had
- 34:56Speaker 6: no clue. I thought I was gonna throw the long pitch.
- 34:58Speaker 6: The first down was there, so it was. It was funny,
- 35:01Speaker 6: but we figured out.
- 35:05Speaker 2: It's like, you don't want to be that guy, right
- 35:07Speaker 2: because you're not the only one and you just got there.
- 35:09Speaker 2: But you're like, I don't know which she's saying.
- 35:13Speaker 1: First out it come off. It came over and his
- 35:15Speaker 1: in his accent, and I was like, oh man, this art.
- 35:17Speaker 1: This is gonna get interesting here. But we made it
- 35:20Speaker 1: through it and it was all uphill from there. Yeah,
- 35:22Speaker 1: it was good. After that fastballall what.
- 35:30Speaker 6: You're like, Yeah, yeah, we got through it. We might
- 35:34Speaker 6: we might work ended up being good.
- 35:35Speaker 1: So that's good. That's good story.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Hunter. Thanks for joining us. Congrats on the deal. We'll
- 35:41Speaker 2: see you in spring training to appreciate the time.
- 35:44Speaker 1: Yeah, thank you. I appreciate y'all have
