- 1:27of Yours Truly Johnny Dollar, and this one isn't titled The Matter of Reasonable
- 1:33Doubt Parts one and two from Hollywood. It's time now for Johnny Dollar,
- 1:42Ben Guardy, Johnny Amrican Northern Trust. Oh hi, Ben, what do
- 1:46you hear from wall streets. Save your money, what money money I'm gonna
- 1:49pay you for this case. I've got a crazy one, Johnny, so
- 1:52naturally it's out of me. Nothing personal. Look, it's it's a trust
- 1:56set up, cumulative endowment insurance writer. Big deal over a quarter million bucks,
- 2:00maybe half a million from home to home from a Missus Ezra Grimley,
- 2:05widow to her granddaughter Susan saw and Missus Grimley owns the Flint Rock branch in
- 2:09Nevada. Never heard of it. Our representative out there is Jonas Parks.
- 2:13He's a president of the Flint Rock for his national bank. Never heard of
- 2:15it. It's a whistle stop about twenty miles from Las Vegas that I've heard
- 2:21him. Park started the deal rolling and then he got cold feet. Now
- 2:23he's yelling for help. Thinks the old lady may be crazy, I mean
- 2:28literally, and there does seem to be a reasonable doubt. Unless Park's himself
- 2:31is crazy. Well that's also a possibility, Johnny. Tonight and Every Weekday
- 2:44Night, Bob Bailey in the Transcribed Adventures of the Man with the Action Packed
- 2:47Expense Account, America's Fabulous Freelance Insurance Investigators Turley Johnny Dollar from special Investigator Johnny
- 3:07Dollar to the home office American Northern Trust Company, Hartford, Connecticut. The
- 3:12following is an accounting of expenditures during my investigation of the matter of reasonable doubt.
- 3:20I had them one one hundred and fifty four dollars and forty cents transportation
- 3:23and Incidental's Hartford to Las Vegas, Nevada, where I checked into a hotel,
- 3:27and then phoned the local office of a national business and credit rating bureau
- 3:30that my client retained on a permanent consulting basis. I asked for a rundown
- 3:34on Jonas Parks and god its An a one set of references. Parks had
- 3:38been a resident of Nevada for thirty two years and president of the Flint Rock
- 3:42Bank for seventeen. He was regarded locally as a cautious investor, a prudent
- 3:46financial advisor, scrupulously honest, and as sound as a dollar a silver dollar
- 3:53crazy hardly. I had them two thirty two and fifty cents deposit in first
- 4:00day's rental on a drive at yourself hired car mile age Las Vegas to Flint
- 4:05Rock twenty three point six. Item I is building appraisal Flint Rock, three
- 4:10bar casinos, all needing paint, one restaurant, one general store, barbershop,
- 4:15garage, welding shop, railroad depot also needing paint, four dwellings,
- 4:19and of course one bank. Jonas Parks President. What can I do for
- 4:26you, young fellow? Well, my name is Dollar, mister Park's Johnny
- 4:28Dollar. I'm a special investigator for American and i'm here in regard to the
- 4:31Gramley Trust case. Well, I mighty glad to know you, miss Dollar,
- 4:35and I don't mind telling you. I'm glad you got here. Oh
- 4:39here, pull up chair, Okay, sit down. It's been a real
- 4:44oad day. Funny looking clouds hanging off there toward the river. Yeah,
- 4:47and understan, I'm driving out from town. Storm clouds, that's what they
- 4:50are this term year jun in this neck of the woods. It can happen
- 4:55anytime of the year. Cloudburst come up just like that, and they're over
- 5:00just as fair. Oh that's very interesting. You're a hypocrite, young fellow.
- 5:03What makes you think so? You didn't come clear across the country to
- 5:06hear a dissertation on desert storm So stop sitting there trying to pretend you're interested.
- 5:12Whatever you say, mister Parks. As matter of fact, you weren't
- 5:14even half listening to me. No, as a matter of fact, I
- 5:16wasn't. Well, what were you doing there, looking you over, sizing
- 5:19you up? Come to any conclusions a couple such as well, in the
- 5:25first place, I'm inclined to discard the theory that you're crazy. That what
- 5:29they told you in Hartford the figure one of you is either you or missus
- 5:32Gramley. They do eh, And what is your second conclusion, that you
- 5:38were sitting there sizing me? You're right, I wasn't do any conclusions,
- 5:42mister Parks. Yeah, one such as that we'll probably get along together,
- 5:46alright, you and me. And suppose we got down the Gramley case.
- 5:53I no wonder they thought what they did. Maybe they're right, Maybe we
- 5:56are crazy, both of us. Well as I understand that missus Gramley wanted
- 5:59to set up some kind of insured trust for her granddaughter. You started the
- 6:02proceedings for her and then stop cold and call for help. Yes, it's
- 6:05about what happened. Why was she financially unable to carry out there? Of
- 6:11course she's able. I wouldn't need any outside help if that was the problem.
- 6:14You've been banking with me for mighty near twenty years. Then is she
- 6:17mentally incompetent? Sir gravely? Is this saying as well? At least I've
- 6:23always figured she was. But confounded, mister Dollard, there's something wrong out
- 6:26at that branch. What do you mean? I don't know what I mean?
- 6:30Well, if you don't, I mean it's mostly things you can't put
- 6:32your finger on, little things that add up finally add up to what.
- 6:36I don't know. It's just a feeling, a kind of a hunch.
- 6:41Is that what you mean? Yes, you want to put it that way,
- 6:44So I brought you clear out here from Hartford on a hunch. Go
- 6:46ahead say it. Relax, mister Park's relax. I've had hunches of my
- 6:49own, and sometimes the horse has won. But I don't even know why
- 6:53I think something is wrong? All right? What's the set about there at
- 6:57the ranch? What's the background? Missus Gramley is a widow. Her husband
- 7:01died about fourteen years ago, and she stayed on afterward and ran the ranch.
- 7:05Of course, her son, Edney's wife were there with her until three
- 7:08years ago and done most of the work, and they moved out three years
- 7:11ago. No, they were killed in automobile accident. This girl, Susan
- 7:15that Missus Gramley wanted to set up the trust for, is their daughter.
- 7:18She's going on seventeen now. Then the two of them live there alone.
- 7:23Oh No, there's another couple, Walter Gramley and his wife, Hilda.
- 7:26Walter's Missus Gramley's nephew sort of manages the ranch. There's a pretty good job
- 7:30of it too. And that's the whole family. Missus Gramley, her nephew,
- 7:35Walter and his wife, and her granddaughter Susan. That's the family.
- 7:39Were better or worse? Uh, mister Parks, do you even have any
- 7:44idea as to what might be wrong? Not the slightest. You're on your
- 7:48own son. How did this trust business start? How did it come about?
- 7:53Missus Gramley came into town one day about two months ago and sprung it
- 7:56on me out of a blue sky, first time she'd been in town nearly
- 8:00year. Did she say why she wanted to set up the trust? Oh,
- 8:03she says there was nobody's business but her own. She's changed a lot
- 8:07in the last year. She's not herself anymore, and the trust was intended
- 8:11in its entirety for her granddaughter, Susan. That's right. Within the next
- 8:15three years, she wanted the whole estate transferred to the girl. Did Susan
- 8:18know about it? According to missus Gramley, nobody knew about it, and
- 8:22she didn't want anybody to know. All right, then you started the ball
- 8:26rolling, and then you stopped it. Her nephew, Walller came in to
- 8:30see me last week. He knew something was up and there was no use
- 8:33trying to lie to him. When I told him what she was doing,
- 8:35he said that she would never go through with it. So, oh,
- 8:39I went out to the ranch to see her, laid all the cards on
- 8:41the table. I told her what Waldard said. Oh, it was her
- 8:45reaction. She said maybe he was right, maybe she wouldn't go through with
- 8:48it. Then she started rambling, not even making sense, talking about the
- 8:52auto accident and her son's dead. But before I left, she told me
- 8:56again that I should keep pushing the trust. So you called for help,
- 9:01I called for help. Well, I guess I'd better go talk to the
- 9:07lady. That's not going to be so easy. Why not, Walterer won't
- 9:11let a stranger on the place. You mean he's holding her captive? No,
- 9:16no, I think he believes he's losing her mind. He's trying to
- 9:18keep it quiet. Now what do you believe, mister Parks. I don't
- 9:24know. Well maybe we can find out, I hope. So just one
- 9:28thing, who will be careful of what I don't know? Jonas Parks had
- 9:37one other suggestion that I pretend to be a special investigator for the Cattleman's Association.
- 9:41I agreed to try it. Four miles from Flint Rock, the narrow
- 9:46Ranch Road left the plateau and began climbing up through the broken bluff country.
- 9:50A mile and a half in the ranch house, I pulled out the choke
- 9:52flood of the engine and let the car cough to a stop, the old
- 9:54out of gas gimmick, And about ten minutes later I was wishing I thought
- 9:58of some other place I am. When Park said cloudburst, he wasn't exaggerating.
- 10:07The rain came down in sheets. In sixty seconds I was soaked through,
- 10:11and in another two minutes the dry ground was a muddy bug. I
- 10:16kept on walking, or trying to walk, and the footing got worse.
- 10:20Why then I'd had it, or at least I thought I had. I
- 10:24hit the mud, rolled into a pile of boulders and pulled my gun.
- 10:26The man was riding slowly toward me on a horse, holding a rifle over
- 10:28his arm. My heedged down between the rocks, took a sight on him,
- 10:33and waited. He dismounted and walked toward me, carrying the rifle carelessly.
- 10:39Apparently he thought he'd dropped me. I let him get within twelve feet.
- 10:45All right, hold it, drop that rifle, get your hands up,
- 10:48I said, drop it. What's the idea? Well, that's a
- 10:54good question, only I'm the one to ask it. The trispisson. I've
- 11:00been losing cattle, so I've heard. What do you mean you've heard?
- 11:05I'm an investigator for the Cattleman's Association. Are you well at Gramley? That's
- 11:09right? What do you expect to find sneaking in here on foot? This
- 11:11way? Now? What I did find? At least? Look, I've
- 11:15got a car back there on the road. I ran out of gas.
- 11:18I understand the owner of the Flint Rock is a missus Ezra Gramley. She's
- 11:20my aunt. Well, i'd like to see her. I'm afraid that's impossible.
- 11:24Why what's your name? Dollar, Johnny Dollar, mister Dollar, go
- 11:31back to your car and wait, I'll send some gasoline from the house when
- 11:35you get it. Turn that car around and get off the property. You're
- 11:39working for me. You know I'm a member of the association, and you
- 11:43know as well as I do that you've got no more authority than any other
- 11:46private individual. So get out and stay out. And if I don't,
- 11:50well, then you're a trespasser and I won't miss twice the next time I'll
- 11:56kill you. Is that clear? It was clear, perfectly clear, And
- 12:03at this point I wasn't ready to force the issue, so I conducted an
- 12:07orderly, strategic withdrawal and short I went back to the car. The rain
- 12:09stopped before I reached it, and a few minutes later a station wagon came
- 12:13lumbering down the road from the ranch and break to a stop a few yards
- 12:16away. The girl who came toward me carrying a five gallon gasoline cann was
- 12:22a living little doll, a daffodil, as perky and bright as a brand
- 12:24new punny. Hello there, Hi, I'm Susan Gramley and you're mister Dollar,
- 12:28and you're out of gas and I've got some point. Well here,
- 12:31that's pretty heavy, and let me take that nope, just stand back and
- 12:35avoid the splash. I'm an old hand at this. In fact, I'm
- 12:39a chronic empty tanker myself, and I, uh, what's the matter out
- 12:46of gas? Are you big deal? Huh? That tank is almost full.
- 12:50Yeah, well, there's no use lying to you, I suppose.
- 12:52Nope, I'm too smart. I see another thing. You're not with the
- 12:58Cattleman's Association, mister Dollar. I'm not, Nope. I think you're here
- 13:01to dig up the past because of what has happened and what might be going
- 13:05to happen all that. Yep, And you know what, I think it's
- 13:11just fine and dandy. You do, you bet? I do. I
- 13:16loved my dad. I loved him more than anything. They knew what he
- 13:22always did when he got mad, Sure they knew. I figured it out
- 13:26a long time ago. Like to tell me about it, Susan. You'll
- 13:30find out, mister Dollar. I think you're the kind of a man who
- 13:33smashes into things right into the middle and break some wide open. Be careful
- 13:39though, oh, because you know something you're smashing into a bomb. Johnny
- 14:01Dollar Jonas Parks, mister Dollar, the Flint Rock Bank. Yeah, I
- 14:05know the man who warned me. How's that you said it would be tough
- 14:09to get into the Gramley ranch when I got rained on, shot at,
- 14:13threatened, outsmarted by a sixteen year old girl, and I still didn't see
- 14:16Missus Gramley. You aiming to give up for the night. Yes, I'm
- 14:20busy trying to dry out my bones over the heat from a triple brandy.
- 14:24Hell, I'm going out to see Missus Bramley in the morning. I'll try
- 14:26to pick something up. Yeah, do that, will you? And something
- 14:31else? Mister Parks that auto accident three years ago when Susan's parents were killed?
- 14:37What about it, mister Dollar? You know what about it? Ah
- 14:41me? The dead past has always with us. You go see Will Connors
- 14:45there in Las Vegas. He runs the Fort County Weekly Tribune. Tell him
- 14:48I sent you, and be careful once again, mister Park's careful of what
- 14:54I still don't know. From Special Investigator Johnny Dollar location in Las Vegas,
- 15:07Nevada, to the home office American Northern Trust Company, Hartford, Connecticut.
- 15:13Assignment a matter of reasonable doubts, expense account continued. Itdem four seven dollars
- 15:22in a quarter. A triple wasn't enough, so I bought the whole bottle
- 15:26and took it up to my room. I was pushed, and not just
- 15:30from being caught out in a desert cloudburst. Missus Grimley, elderly widow owner
- 15:35of the Flint Rock Ranch, wanted to set up an insurance trust and convey
- 15:37all her holdings over to her sixteen year old granddaughter, Susan. Her only
- 15:41other heirs were her nephew, Walter, who managed the ranch, and his
- 15:45wife, Hilda. Jason Parks, my client's local representative and respected president of
- 15:50the Flint Rock Bank, had started proceedings, then got cold feet and dropped
- 15:54them. Why he didn't know, just to hunch something wrong, He'd call
- 16:00for help, and I was that help. Total results so far zero.
- 16:06I put the cork in the brandy bottle and went to bed. I'll be
- 16:18with you in a minute, John Fellow, Oh, hurry. The Weekly
- 16:22Tribune, like a thousand other weekly tribunes across the country, not competing with
- 16:26the big daily, is not even trying to printing the little things, homie
- 16:30things, and hanging on one man office senator, publisher, reporter, proofreader
- 16:33and at the moment lina type operator. I guess, of course, but
- 16:37the man at the line of type looked as Thowa's name just had to be
- 16:40Will Connor. My name is Will Connor. What can I do for you?
- 16:44I'm Johnny Donner, mister Connors. Jonas Parks out at Flint Rocks suggestion,
- 16:47Oh yeah, yeah. Jonahs called me this morning, said you'd probably
- 16:49be in glad to know you nice. Same here, he said, you'd
- 16:52most likely be asking all sorts of crazy questions. I was to well humor
- 16:59me, you might put it that way, said I was to answer them
- 17:02if I could. Did mister Parks tell you who I am? Nope,
- 17:04didn't ask him. Jones and me been friends for twenty years, and if
- 17:07he says you're all right, then that's good enough for me. Wow,
- 17:11thanks to both of you. It's for one thing, though, mister Dollar,
- 17:14they're going to be a story in this Maybe any chance giving me a
- 17:18scoop on it? Scoop? I haven't heard that word in years, and
- 17:22i'd had one in years. In fact, I ain't never had one.
- 17:26Always have to get my front page story about reading me here in Las Vegas
- 17:29dailies. Yeah, a bunch of smart alecs getting telegraphs from Moscow and Paris
- 17:33and France and all them places. Anybody can get scoops that way, but
- 17:37me, I got to get out and scratch for what I print. Well,
- 17:41oh it sure do me good. To put one over on them dudes.
- 17:45I'd get me out an extra, a big banner headline on it,
- 17:48got the type for two never been used, exclusive right across the top,
- 17:53and knock them back on their byline. A mister conn is all right.
- 17:56If there is a story, you get it. That's the promise. A
- 18:00scoop, a living breathing scoop. Oh god, yeah. Now about the
- 18:06question, Yes, sir, young fellow, what do you want to know?
- 18:08Anything you can tell me about Missus Gramley and the Flint Rock Ranch.
- 18:12Missus Gramley, Well, now there is a woman for you, son.
- 18:17They don't make that kind these days. Noticed any change in her lately?
- 18:21Well, I wouldn't want this to go any farther, I understand, and
- 18:26I guess it depends on what you mean by lately. I ain't seen her
- 18:29but twice in the last year. I don't allow no visitors out there anymore,
- 18:32so I found out yesterday her nephew took a shot at me with a
- 18:34rifle. You don't say they are getting planny. Do you know of any
- 18:40reason for him acting that way? Eh, there's something funny going on out
- 18:44that ranch. What, for instance, couldn't say, like I was telling
- 18:48you, I've only seen her twice, and she was different somehow. It
- 18:52was like she was well, breaking up, sort of scared of something.
- 18:56Maybe I don't know. I have a nephew by any chance, walder Well,
- 19:00I'd say he acts about as scared as she does, or as upset
- 19:03at least. Maybe they're both scared of something. What about the granddaughter Susan?
- 19:07Is she scared too? No? That one. Oh, she's strange
- 19:11enough, all right, But the old nick himself wouldn't scared or none.
- 19:15What do he means she's strange enough. You met her, mister Dollar,
- 19:18for about three minutes yesterday afternoon. That's long enough. How'd she strike you?
- 19:25He was one of the most honest kids I've ever met, or else
- 19:27the cleverest. Yeah, it's about the size of it. Which do you
- 19:32think beat me? And I've known her since the day she was born.
- 19:36Yes, it's quite a family, including that fancy wife of Walter's Hilda.
- 19:41What about her, h Let's just say she's too much for him. You
- 19:47follow me. Huh yeah, I think so. Ah. They're all worried.
- 19:51They're on edge, either about the same thing or different things. They're
- 19:55pushed, they're driven. You can feel it. There's a pressure out there
- 19:59and anything you can have, maybe it already has. Maybe it happened three
- 20:03years ago. What do you mean? There was an auto accident three years
- 20:08ago and Missus Greenwy's son and his wife, Susan's parents, they were killed
- 20:12in it. I've got the Morgan files here. I wrote it up pretty
- 20:17complete when it happened. Yeah. I want to look through those files later,
- 20:19but right now, you want the story behind the story, if there
- 20:23is one. If there is, I don't know it. I think you
- 20:26would, if anybody would, being a newsman, of course, I know.
- 20:30Just an accident. Well, how did it happened? Well, it
- 20:34was on the road to the ranch up there where it winds through the bluffs.
- 20:38It was raining, pitch black. There'd been an argument back at the
- 20:42house. They had a lot of arguments, I guess, But anyway,
- 20:47Hilda got mad and left and took her car and headed for town. And
- 20:52a while afterwards Ed had all he could take and he run out too,
- 20:55and jumped into his car. Susan tells me that was a habit of her
- 20:57father's whenever he lost his temp were in an argument. Yeah, we'd always
- 21:00get in his car and drive like a demon until he got over it.
- 21:04She also made it kind of a stranger remark. She said they knew about
- 21:08it. What do you mean by that? I guess you'll have to ask
- 21:12Susan what she meant. All right, So we had jumped in his car
- 21:17that night, and then Mary went with him trying to calm him down.
- 21:19I guess. So he come around that curve. He must have been doing
- 21:23sixty skidding half out of control, and there was Hilda's car parked on the
- 21:30curve, right square in his headlights. Just smies right into it at full
- 21:33speed. Both cars rolled over the bank, caught fire and burned up.
- 21:37Him and Mary were dead before the car stopped. Cart Hilding get out him.
- 21:41She wasn't there. He had a flat, left her car parked and
- 21:44started back on foot. I see he was lucky, that's all. She
- 21:51sure was mister Connor's real lucky. I took a back file of the Tribune
- 21:56into the outer office and one over the news on the desk of Ed Brieley
- 22:00and his wife. I found nothing that Will Connors hadn't already told me shocking
- 22:06loss find people's sudden accidents. I kept hanging up on that word accidents.
- 22:12I kept wanting to put a question mark after. I was so absorbed I
- 22:15didn't even notice her come in until she spoke to me, Well, well,
- 22:21are you following me, Susan? Nope, got some copy from mister
- 22:25Connor's. I write articles for him sometimes, you know, clever kid and
- 22:29all that sort of m I see you took me seriously, naughty figure.
- 22:34You didn't close that paper fast enough. Now, why would an investigator from
- 22:38the Caluman's Association be interested in an auto accident three years back? Uh?
- 22:44Suppose you tell me? Because you are not an investigator for the Caluman's Association.
- 22:49Who are you, mister Dollar. I've got half a notion of level
- 22:55with you, Susan. Then I'll go the other half by leveling with you,
- 22:59and h'll to call the association office in Reno this morning. They said
- 23:03they never heard of you. I imagine that mister Parks was out at the
- 23:06ranch just before I left. She asked him about you too. He said
- 23:10he'd never sing or heard of you. I see he was lying, though.
- 23:15I can always tell when people are lying, and they know it too.
- 23:18That's why they're uncomfortable around me. Yeah, I know what you mean.
- 23:23Hey, look, Susan, did mister Parks talk to your grandmother?
- 23:26No? He was supposed to arrange for me to see her about the accident.
- 23:30Maybe I'm not sure yet, I'm shooting in the dark. Oh,
- 23:34it's time somebody did. Where are you staying, mister dollar at the common
