- 0:31Inside the box with the senior usa.
- 0:34KJ.
- 0:35I mean, I love to talk about the women that supported me when I first started in logistics.
- 0:40I paused my story earlier because it's,.
- 0:43It's a little near and dear to the heart.
- 0:44I get emotional.
- 0:45But I had one of the first diverse female leaders at a national carrier.
- 0:49So when I was, you know, found in our local mall not for acting, but for logistics, again, maybe later.
- 0:56Future ambition.
- 0:58Yes, we can do anything.
- 0:59We can do.
- 1:00Exactly.
- 1:01She.
- 1:02So I was off the street.
- 1:03I don't love that.
- 1:06I don't.
- 1:07Do not love that.
- 1:08When you were first discovered.
- 1:09Yeah,.
- 1:12It's a very internal national carrier phrase.
- 1:15Because one of the things that I, my old employer did really, really well was promote from within and know who on their team was.
- 1:21They called ready now and ready for the right roles.
- 1:23And so to get someone for a more like sales, business development, whatever role off the street was really not heard.
- 1:30Right.
- 1:30You pull from ops, so you get someone that kind of like naturally went up progression.
- 1:34So they were looking for someone in my part of Minnesota, which is shocking.
- 1:38And I didn't have any of the prerequisites.
- 1:40I didn't have the background or the education.
- 1:42I had no idea logistics was even a thing.
- 1:43Right.
- 1:44So I'm like, huh.
- 1:45I try to get to build my depth and breadth of experience and skills really just from exposing myself and experience in retail world and sales and training and marketing, whatever in my small local mall and other consultative opportunities
- 2:01that I had.
- 2:01I mean, I feel like you should give the mall a shout out.
- 2:03What was the mall's name?
- 2:04Viking Plaza.
- 2:09Viking Plaza Mall Alexandria, Minnesota.
- 2:11Yeah.
- 2:12Hot spot.
- 2:13Everybody's gonna go hit it.
- 2:14No, everybody's gonna go shop now.
- 2:15We have restaurants now.
- 2:16Okay.
- 2:16Anyway, there's restaurants there now.
- 2:21Viking Plaza all day long.
- 2:22So anyway, it was really nerve wracking when you're going in and taking a chance and applying for something.
- 2:29And I actually did end up getting an interview and my first leader was the first again, like I said, diverse female leader within that district at the national carrier I worked for and had met me in the interview.
- 2:40And I kind of did like, a letter where I was like, you know, you're buying a house.
- 2:43Like, please sell me this house.
- 2:44This is why I need this house.
- 2:45I kind of did the same thing when I applied.
- 2:47And she said that there was just something in the energy she felt in my letter and was like, we just probably need to meet this person off the street that she doesn't have the background, but let's just see.
- 2:57So I was able to take, like, my education, skill set, all the other things that I had gained, having a bunch of different experiences and say, this is how I can apply.
- 3:05And this is like, why you want an ex teacher.
- 3:07And this is what we can do, right?
- 3:09Ex teacher, mom, female.
- 3:11These are all the skills that we bring to the table and why I know I will be good at inspiring.
- 3:15And she went to bat for me.
- 3:17It wasn't necessarily like a normal thing for that carrier, but she went to bat to get me hired and move me through the process.
- 3:23And I wouldn't have known that this world existed or any of that without her.
- 3:27So, like, shout out to Yolanda.
- 3:29She's my girl.
- 3:30I can't even talk about her anymore because I get all emotional.
- 3:32She's just that amazing.
- 3:34So women that gave the way and the men that gave the way, too.
- 3:37But she, like, wholeheartedly and at the end of the day, is the reason why I am where I am today.
- 3:44I would have not have gotten that chance from her.
- 3:46I wouldn't be.
- 3:47No, absolutely.
- 3:48And I feel the same way again.
- 3:50I was babysitting.
- 3:51I love that.
- 3:52Yes.
- 3:53And she literally looked at my resume.
- 3:55I was like, I feel like you would, you know, really should to try to do carrier sales.
- 3:59And gave me a chance again.
- 4:00I was right out of college, so that wasn't typical.
- 4:04A lot of the national carriers were not hiring right out of college.
- 4:08And then after I was hired, I had a female sales executive just help me.
- 4:14I moved to rural Arkansas.
- 4:16I love Arkansas.
- 4:17Harrison, Arkansas.
- 4:18Had to cover Harrison, Arkansas to do all the shop.
- 4:21Exactly.
- 4:22Maybe we'll get free stuff.
- 4:23I know, I know exactly.
- 4:25I don't know what's in Harrison right now.
- 4:26But, yeah, maybe we'll get free stuff.
- 4:28But no, she did.
- 4:28And she, you know, I didn't.
- 4:30I was remote, so I wasn't in the office.
- 4:32You know, on sales, you go out to the territory, you're working.
- 4:35And so I didn't have anybody again.
- 4:37I was 22 years old, right out of college.
- 4:39In a new town.
- 4:40And Dina just came alongside me and helped me so much and was encouraging.
- 4:46And, you know, I would make mistakes.
- 4:47Like, she would say, okay, you're going to do this presentation today, and I would make mistakes.
- 4:51And she's like, no, you have to make mistakes.
- 4:53You know, you have to make mistakes to learn from it.
- 4:55And.
- 4:56Yeah.
- 4:56And you want, you want to get comfortable.
- 4:57You want to get comfortable in front of the customer.
- 4:59And the only way to do that is to present and, you know, get more comfortable.
- 5:03So it was amazing just how our industry, I really feel like women support each other.
- 5:07Yes.
- 5:08And, you know, even if we're competitors or in different companies, we're always helping each other out.
- 5:13So I think that's so key.
- 5:15Just something you need.
- 5:17I think the other thing is that.
- 5:19You're never gonna, when you, when you.
- 5:20Have other women who are rooting for you, you're not gonna miss opportunities.
- 5:24No.
- 5:25Right.
- 5:26I actually took a break from logistics after the pandemic because I just, you know, I was importing toilet paper from China during the pandemic.
- 5:35There were a hundred ships that supported Los Angeles.
- 5:37Did you get toilet paper?
- 5:38Wow.
- 5:40I got the toilet paper to the people.
- 5:42All right.
- 5:43And then I needed a break.
- 5:44We heard it here first.
- 5:46Yes, exactly.
- 5:47This is who we have to pay.
- 5:48Exactly.
- 5:49Thank you.
- 5:49Thank you.
- 5:50You're welcome.
- 5:50You're welcome.
- 5:51But you know, I negotiated two national parcel contracts back to back, and those are six month negotiations.
- 6:00It was tough.
- 6:02And in that environment, I needed a break.
- 6:05And so I did.
- 6:06I, I took one and tried out a different industry, which was absolutely not for me.
- 6:10Yes.
- 6:11And a of mine who's a woman in logistics brought me back and that's how I landed at Shipya, because she said, no, you've got a, you've got sales.
- 6:19We need to utilize this.
- 6:21So.
- 6:22No, absolutely.
- 6:23So today, as I kind of called out at the beginning of the podcast, we do have females that are looking at your leadership roles and like, wow, you know, as we aspire to be, the females that, you know,
- 6:34brought us along the way, they're looking at you the same way.
- 6:38So what advice?
- 6:39You know, anything, anything that you can give to the next generation that, you know, it's going to be filling our ROLES when we're CEOs one day, you know, and you're acting.
- 6:48When you're acting person.
- 6:50Filling your role.
- 6:51When I'm on location.
- 6:52Yeah.
- 6:53When you're on location with a microphone all the time.
- 6:56No, but, you know, what are things that you could.
- 6:59Any advice or any Tips that you can give the next generation for coming into the logistics transportation world.
- 7:06Sure, I'll start, if that's okay.
- 7:09One of the pieces of advice that I learned from the Yolanda who gave me my first shot, gave me a chance, is I think as women, we tend to sometimes being our own biggest roadblock when it comes to
- 7:20a new challenge or a new role or just something we're maybe not completely comfortable with, that we can be wholly successful.
- 7:26We can be our own roadblock.
- 7:27Right.
- 7:28We want to get into something and be the expert and be masterful right away and take it from there.
- 7:32The advice I got that I continue to pass along to people is, are you 50% of the way?
- 7:37Are you 50% of the way there?
- 7:38The other 50 will come.
- 7:39And it comes with exposure, experience and education.
- 7:42Yes, done, like.
- 7:43And as soon as I started really living that advice, then I was able to get even more opportunities in the world of logistics in all different verticals.
- 7:51And so that is something I love to say to people, is 50%, you got this.
- 7:54It's not just the 50%.
- 7:56It's showing up.
- 7:57Oh, yes.
- 7:58You got half of it.
- 7:59And you show up, show up on time and you show up regularly.
- 8:02Absolutely.
- 8:03It's a huge part of it for me.
- 8:05I always try to help people connect their reason why they're here.
- 8:10Is it about the relationships or it is about.
- 8:12Is it about some bigger picture?
- 8:15For me, I really love all of the diversification that we're seeing in the transportation industry post pandemic.
- 8:23You know, necessity breeds creativity and there are people who are doing really cool stuff.
- 8:31And if you can see what's cool about it, if you can understand how that connects to people's daily lives and the small businesses that are trying to, you know, get their foot forward in whatever, in the retail industry
- 8:45or whatever service is being provided.
- 8:48How do you help that?
- 8:49How do you be a part of.
- 8:50It and figure out what part of logistics and supply chain connects for you and that makes it not just a job, but a purpose.
- 8:59No, absolutely.
- 9:01You really connect.
- 9:02Yeah, I love that.
- 9:03What do you say to people?
- 9:05Well, I say kind of like the calculated risk, you know, if you're.
- 9:09I'm not a risk taker, so I've always been, you know, very risk adverse.
- 9:14I like comfort.
- 9:15And this industry is far from comfort.
- 9:18True.
- 9:19Like, you mean it changes and it.
- 9:21Shifts all the time.
- 9:22There's no comfort in this industry daily.
- 9:25If you're comfortable, that's actually scary.
- 9:27That's.
- 9:27Something's wrong.
- 9:28Yeah, something.
- 9:29Yeah, something is Wrong.
- 9:30And so that's one thing I encourage people kind of like what you're talking about.
- 9:34I don't know if you're ever going to be fully qualified or potentially prepared for the next role.
- 9:40Yeah.
- 9:41So I think you just have to take a calculated risk and know that you're one.
- 9:45You're going to have mentors like us.
- 9:46We didn't know everything and we had these mentors that helped us along our journey and just to take that risk and to grow, you know, because that's the biggest thing.
- 9:56Also, I love how small this industry is.
- 9:59I love that we have social networks and we have people who we see at these conferences and talk to in meetings, and they change companies, but move and grow and change.
- 10:13And you can see other people also taking those risks.
- 10:16And it's okay because we're all here for each other.
- 10:18Yeah.
- 10:19And you protect your reputation.
- 10:20You don't burn bridges.
- 10:21Ever.
- 10:22Not.
- 10:22Yes, very good.
- 10:24Very good point.
- 10:25Because then you won't get invited to the Mimosa mix.
- 10:27No.
- 10:28Yes, exactly.
- 10:29You don't want to get kicked out of the Mimosa mix.
- 10:31Yeah.
- 10:31No, you do not.
- 10:32No, you don't.
- 10:33And I love that.
- 10:34And I love that within our industry, we have specific events, you know, for us to go and bond and collaborate and encourage one another.
- 10:41You know, I love that.
- 10:42I love that about the industry.
- 10:44That just, I don't know, companies are.
- 10:46Making that almost like an initiative or a KPI measurement internally is what are we doing to support our women, our, you know, diverse personnel.
- 10:56And having seen companies have actually, like, women in logistics groups or business resource groups or whatever you want to call it within that company.
- 11:04The company I was at prior to Pro Ship did such an amazing job at that and empowering women and bringing women from all over the country once a year to get in a space, in a safe space to
- 11:12talk and do, you know, conversations like this, that is something that is also new in the last 10 years.
- 11:17Right.
- 11:18So just creating these avenues and platforms and opportunities and then protecting your brand.
- 11:22Right.
- 11:23The exposure, the mimosa mixers, I mean, it's.
- 11:25It's evolved.
- 11:26It is evolved.
- 11:27Absolutely.
- 11:28I love it.
- 11:28I love it.
- 11:29Well, this was amazing.
- 11:30Thank you both for joining me today.
- 11:33Any parting words before we close out our podcast today?
- 11:37Any last minute thoughts we have?
- 11:40I know.
- 11:40No, it was great.
- 11:41I feel like we've shared a lot of feedback and just how amazing the industry is and hopefully we encourage others, you know, today as they're watching this, and maybe they don't know if they want to take a leap
- 11:52into logistics.
- 11:52Hopefully this encourages them to be like, oh, yeah, take that risk, come to the dark side.
- 11:57And also it's a good strategy.
- 12:00It's a big industry.
- 12:01Yes.
- 12:02You, you can reinvent, you can reinvent yourself.
- 12:05I started out in, you know, international freight and here I am in, you know, parcel strategy.
- 12:12Yes.
- 12:12And there you can live anywhere in the world.
- 12:15You will meet people from all over the world.
- 12:17And it's such a great opportunity, such a fantastic industry.
- 12:21I love it.
- 12:22I just think keep your networks open because like you said, you don't know what you don't know, especially in this space.
- 12:27So continue to meet people, meet people from different companies, meet, work with your competitors.
- 12:32Like, competition is the best.
- 12:33I mean, we're all sitting here together on a podcast.
- 12:35I think that's wonderful.
- 12:36You never know when your competition is.
- 12:38Going to be your colleague.
- 12:39Not in this industry.
- 12:40Don't know.
- 12:41So just like have that network growing.
- 12:43Right.
- 12:43Maybe you don't get paid to make friends.
- 12:45That's fine.
- 12:45Like, we can't, we all can't do that.
- 12:47Our cool jobs like that.
- 12:49But it is cool to expand your network and expand the women and different roles.
- 12:53And I think that's probably my other piece of advice is me.
- 12:56Well, sometimes men and women, right, stick to what we're comfortable with, but go talk to operators, go talk to freight forwarders, go talk to competitors, expand your scope that way as well.
- 13:07I think that's been hugeeffort.
- 13:09Yeah, no, absolutely.
- 13:11Well, thank you so much for joining me today.
- 13:13Thank you.
