- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Danish with Fexingo. I'm Lucas, and as always, I've got my favorite student with me. Luna: Hi everyone, I'm Luna. And Lucas, I'm not your favorite student, I'm your only student. Lucas: That's true. And you're doing great. Today we're going to talk about furniture. I know we've done some home rooms before, but now let's fill them with actual things. Luna: Oh, furniture. That's useful. I actually just moved into a new place, so I need to know how to say 'sofa' and 'table'. Lucas: Perfect timing. So first, let's start with the living room. The Danish word for sofa is 'sofa'. It's actually the same as English. But we'll put it in a full sentence: 'Der er en sofa i stuen.' Luna: Der er en sofa i stuen. So that means 'There is a sofa in the living room.' Lucas: Exactly. And 'stuen' is the living room, which you might remember from our room episodes. Let's hear you say it again. Luna: Der er en sofa i stuen. Lucas: Great. Now, if you want to ask where something is, you can say 'Hvor er bordet?' That means 'Where is the table?' Luna: Hvor er bordet? So 'hvor' is 'where', and 'bordet' is 'the table'. Lucas: Right. And a typical answer might be 'Bordet er i køkkenet.' The table is in the kitchen. Luna: Bordet er i køkkenet. So if I'm looking for a table, I can ask 'Hvor er bordet?' and someone can say 'Bordet er i køkkenet.' Lucas: Yes. Let's practice all three again. Repeat after me: 'Der er en sofa i stuen.' Luna: Der er en sofa i stuen. Lucas: 'Hvor er bordet?' Luna: Hvor er bordet? Lucas: 'Bordet er i køkkenet.' Luna: Bordet er i køkkenet. Lucas: Good. Now let's add a chair. A chair is 'stol', and 'the chair' is 'stolen'. So if you're sitting, you can say 'Jeg sidder på stolen.' I am sitting on the chair. Luna: Jeg sidder på stolen. So 'stolen' is the chair. But wait, 'stolen' sounds like 'the stolen' in English. Lucas: That's a funny coincidence, but in Danish it just means 'the chair'. Let's try that one. Luna: Jeg sidder på stolen. Lucas: Perfect. And finally, for the bedroom, we have 'sengen' which is 'the bed'. So 'Sengen er i soveværelset.' The bed is in the bedroom. Luna: Sengen er i soveværelset. That's a long one. Lucas: It's a bit of a mouthful, but you can do it. Try it slowly: 'Sengen er i soveværelset.' Luna: Sengen er i soveværelset. Sengen er i soveværelset. Lucas: Excellent. So now we have five phrases. Let's do a quick review. Number one: 'Der er en sofa i stuen.' Luna: Der er en sofa i stuen. Lucas: Number two: 'Hvor er bordet?' Luna: Hvor er bordet? Lucas: Number three: 'Bordet er i køkkenet.' Luna: Bordet er i køkkenet. Lucas: Number four: 'Jeg sidder på stolen.' Luna: Jeg sidder på stolen. Lucas: And number five: 'Sengen er i soveværelset.' Luna: Sengen er i soveværelset. Lucas: Now, let's put some of these together. Imagine you're showing a friend around your new apartment. You could say 'Der er en sofa i stuen. Bordet er i køkkenet. Jeg sidder på stolen.' Luna: That's like a mini tour. 'Der er en sofa i stuen. Bordet er i køkkenet. Jeg sidder på stolen.' Lucas: And if they ask where you sleep, you say 'Sengen er i soveværelset.' Luna: Sengen er i soveværelset. I'm really getting the hang of this. So if I'm looking for the table, I ask 'Hvor er bordet?' Lucas: Exactly. And you might hear 'Bordet er i køkkenet' as a reply. Luna: So I can ask and answer. This is so useful. I'm going to use these phrases when I move my furniture around. Lucas: That's a great idea. And remember, you can always find more practice with Fexingo. We have plenty of episodes to help you build your vocabulary step by step. I like that. Lucas: Alright, back to furniture. Let's try a tiny scene. I'll ask you 'Hvor er bordet?' and you answer 'Bordet er i køkkenet.' Luna: Okay, let's do it. Lucas: Hvor er bordet? Luna: Bordet er i køkkenet. Lucas: Perfect. And now, 'Hvor er sofaen?' Luna: Hmm, we didn't learn that. But I can guess. 'Der er en sofa i stuen.' So maybe 'Sofaen er i stuen.' Lucas: That's right. You're getting good at this. So you can use the pattern to talk about any furniture. Let's do one more: 'Hvor er sengen?' Luna: Sengen er i soveværelset. Lucas: Perfect. You just used all five phrases in a conversation. I'm impressed. Luna: It's all thanks to you, Lucas. And to Fexingo for keeping it ad-free. Lucas: That's sweet. Well, that's all for today.
