- 0:00Speaker 1: Ether Chapter five. And now I, Marona, I have written
- 0:05Speaker 1: the words which were commanded me according to my memory.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And I have told you the things which I have
- 0:09Speaker 1: sealed up. Therefore touch them not in order that ye
- 0:12Speaker 1: may translate, for that thing is forbidden you, except by
- 0:15Speaker 1: and by it shall be wisdom in God. And behold,
- 0:18Speaker 1: ye may be privileged that ye may show the plates
- 0:20Speaker 1: unto those who shall assist to bring forth this work,
- 0:23Speaker 1: and unto three shall they be shewn by the power
- 0:25Speaker 1: of God. Wherefore they shall know of a surety that
- 0:28Speaker 1: these things are true. And in the mouth of three
- 0:30Speaker 1: witnesses shall these things be established. And the testimony of
- 0:33Speaker 1: three and this work in the which shall be shown
- 0:36Speaker 1: forth the power of God, and also His word, of
- 0:38Speaker 1: which the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost
- 0:41Speaker 1: bear record. And all this shall stand as a testimony
- 0:44Speaker 1: against the world at the last day. And if it
- 0:46Speaker 1: so be that they repent and come unto the Father
- 0:49Speaker 1: in the name of Jesus, they shall be received into
- 0:51Speaker 1: the Kingdom of God. And now, if I have no
- 0:54Speaker 1: authority for these things, judge ye, for ye shall know
- 0:57Speaker 1: that I have authority when ye shall see me, and
- 0:59Speaker 1: we shall stand before God at the last day, Amen
- 1:03Speaker 1: Ether chapter six. And now I Marona, I proceed to
- 1:07Speaker 1: give the record of Jared and his brother. For it
- 1:10Speaker 1: came to pass that after the Lord had prepared the stones,
- 1:13Speaker 1: which the brother of Jared had carried up into the mount,
- 1:15Speaker 1: the brother of Jared came down out of the mount,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and he did put forth the stones into the vessels,
- 1:20Speaker 1: which were prepared, one in each end thereof. And behold,
- 1:23Speaker 1: they did give light unto the vessels. And thus the
- 1:26Speaker 1: Lord caused stones to shine in darkness, to give light
- 1:29Speaker 1: unto men, women and children, that they might not cross
- 1:32Speaker 1: the great waters in darkness. And it came to pass
- 1:35Speaker 1: that when they had prepared all manner of food, that
- 1:37Speaker 1: thereby they might subsist upon the water, and also food
- 1:40Speaker 1: for their flocks and herds, and whatsoever beasts or animal
- 1:43Speaker 1: or fowl, that they should carry with them. And it
- 1:45Speaker 1: came to pass that when they had done all these things,
- 1:48Speaker 1: they got aboard of their vessels or barges, and set
- 1:50Speaker 1: forth into the sea, commending themselves unto the Lord their God.
- 1:54Speaker 1: And it came to pass that the Lord God caused
- 1:56Speaker 1: that there should be a furious wind blow upon the
- 1:58Speaker 1: face of the waters towards the promised Land. And thus
- 2:01Speaker 1: they were tossed upon the waves of the sea before
- 2:03Speaker 1: the wind. And it came to pass that they were
- 2:06Speaker 1: many times buried in the depths of the sea because
- 2:08Speaker 1: of the mountain waves which broke upon them, and also
- 2:11Speaker 1: the great and terrible tempests which were caused by the
- 2:13Speaker 1: fierceness of the wind. And it came to pass that
- 2:16Speaker 1: when they were buried in the deep, there was no
- 2:18Speaker 1: water that could hurt them, their vessels being tight like
- 2:20Speaker 1: unto a dish. And also they were tight like unto
- 2:23Speaker 1: the ark of Noah. Therefore, when they were encompassed about
- 2:25Speaker 1: by many waters, they did cry unto the Lord, and
- 2:28Speaker 1: he did bring them forth again upon the top of
- 2:30Speaker 1: the waters. And it came to pass that the wind
- 2:33Speaker 1: did never cease to blow towards the promised land while
- 2:35Speaker 1: they were upon the waters. And thus they were driven
- 2:38Speaker 1: forth before the wind. And they did sing praises unto
- 2:41Speaker 1: the Lord. Yea, the brother of Jared, did sing praises
- 2:43Speaker 1: unto the Lord. And he did thank and praise the
- 2:45Speaker 1: Lord all the day long, And when the night came,
- 2:48Speaker 1: they did not cease to praise the Lord. And thus
- 2:51Speaker 1: they were driven forth, and no monster of the sea
- 2:53Speaker 1: could break them, neither wail that could mar them. And
- 2:55Speaker 1: they did have light continually, whether it was above the
- 2:58Speaker 1: water or under the water. And thus they were driven
- 3:01Speaker 1: forth three hundred and forty and four days upon the water,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and they did land upon the shore of the Promised Land.
- 3:07Speaker 1: And when they had set their feet upon the shores
- 3:09Speaker 1: of the Promised Land, they bowed themselves down upon the
- 3:12Speaker 1: face of the land, and did humble themselves before the Lord,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and had shed tears of joy before the Lord because
- 3:17Speaker 1: of the multitude of his tender mercies over them. And
- 3:21Speaker 1: it came to pass that they went forth upon the
- 3:23Speaker 1: face of the land and began to till the earth.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And Jared had four sons, and they were called Jacob
- 3:29Speaker 1: and Gilga, and Maha and Oraihah. And the brother of
- 3:32Speaker 1: Jared also begat sons and daughters. And the friends of
- 3:35Speaker 1: Jared and his brother were in number about twenty and
- 3:37Speaker 1: two souls, and they also begat sons and daughters before
- 3:40Speaker 1: they came to the Promised Land. And therefore they began
- 3:43Speaker 1: to be many. And they were taught to walk humbly
- 3:46Speaker 1: before the Lord. And they were also taught from on high,
- 3:49Speaker 1: and it king to pass that they began to spread
- 3:51Speaker 1: upon the face of the land, and to multiply, and
- 3:53Speaker 1: to till the earth. And they did wax strong in
- 3:55Speaker 1: the land. And the brother of Jared began to be old,
- 3:58Speaker 1: and saw that he must soon go down to the grave.
- 4:01Speaker 1: Wherefore he said, unto Jared, let us gather together our people,
- 4:04Speaker 1: that we may number them, that we may know of
- 4:06Speaker 1: them what they will desire of us, before we go
- 4:08Speaker 1: down to our graves. And accordingly the people were gathered together.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Now the number of the sons and the daughters of
- 4:14Speaker 1: the brother of Jared were twenty and two souls, and
- 4:17Speaker 1: the number of sons and daughters of Jared were twelve,
- 4:20Speaker 1: he having four sons. And it came to pass that
- 4:23Speaker 1: they did number their people. And after that they had
- 4:25Speaker 1: numbered them, they did desire of them the things which
- 4:28Speaker 1: they would that they should do before they went down
- 4:30Speaker 1: to their graves. And it came to pass that the
- 4:32Speaker 1: people desired of them that they should annoint one of
- 4:35Speaker 1: their sons to be a king over them. And now behold,
- 4:38Speaker 1: this was grievous unto them, And the brother of Jared said,
- 4:41Speaker 1: unto them, surely this thing leadeth into captivity. But Jared said,
- 4:45Speaker 1: unto his brother, suffer them that they may have a king.
- 4:47Speaker 1: And therefore he said, unto them, choosey out from among
- 4:50Speaker 1: our sons a king, even whom you will. And it
- 4:53Speaker 1: came to pass that they chose even the first born
- 4:56Speaker 1: of the brother of Jared, and his name was Pagag.
- 4:59Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he refused and would
- 5:01Speaker 1: not be their king. And the people would that his
- 5:03Speaker 1: father should constrain him, but his father would not, and
- 5:06Speaker 1: he commanded them that they should constrain no man to
- 5:08Speaker 1: be their king. And it came to pass that they
- 5:11Speaker 1: chose all the brothers of Pagag, and they would not.
- 5:14Speaker 1: And it came to pass that neither were the sons
- 5:15Speaker 1: of Jared, even all save it were one. And Oraihah
- 5:19Speaker 1: was anointed to be king over the people, and he
- 5:21Speaker 1: began to reign, and the people began to prosper, and
- 5:24Speaker 1: they became exceedingly rich. And it came to pass that
- 5:27Speaker 1: Jared died, and his brother also, And it came to
- 5:30Speaker 1: pass that Araiha did walk humbly before the Lord and
- 5:33Speaker 1: did remember how great things the Lord had done for
- 5:35Speaker 1: his father, and also taught his people how great things
- 5:38Speaker 1: the Lord had done for their fathers Ether chapter seven.
- 5:44Speaker 1: And it came to pass that Ouri had did execute
- 5:47Speaker 1: judgment upon the land in righteousness all his days, whose
- 5:50Speaker 1: days were exceedingly many, and he begat sons and daughters. Yea,
- 5:54Speaker 1: he begat thirty and one, among whom were twenty and
- 5:56Speaker 1: three sons. And it came to pass that he also
- 6:00Speaker 1: begat KiB in his old age. And it came to
- 6:02Speaker 1: pass that KiB reigned in his stead, and KiB begat Korihor.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And when Korihor was thirty and two years old, he
- 6:09Speaker 1: rebelled against his father and went over and dwelt in
- 6:11Speaker 1: the land of Nihor, and he begat sons and daughters,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and they became exceedingly fair. Wherefore Korihor drew away many
- 6:18Speaker 1: people after him. And when he had gathered together an army,
- 6:21Speaker 1: he came up unto the land of Morn where the
- 6:23Speaker 1: king dwelt, and took him captive, which brought to pass
- 6:26Speaker 1: the saying of the brother of Jared, that they would
- 6:28Speaker 1: be brought into captivity. Now the land of Morn where
- 6:31Speaker 1: the king dwelt, was near the land which is called
- 6:33Speaker 1: desolation by the Nephites. And it came to pass that
- 6:37Speaker 1: KiB dwelt in captivity, and his people under Korihor, his son,
- 6:40Speaker 1: until he became exceedingly old. Nevertheless, KiB begat Schul in
- 6:45Speaker 1: his old age, while he was yet in captivity, and
- 6:48Speaker 1: it came to pass that Shul was angry with his brother.
- 6:50Speaker 1: And Shul waxed strong and became mighty as to the
- 6:53Speaker 1: strength of a man. And he was also mighty in judgment.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Wherefore he came to the hill Ephraim, and he did
- 6:59Speaker 1: molten out of the hill and made swords out of
- 7:01Speaker 1: steel for those whom he had drawn away with him.
- 7:03Speaker 1: And after he had armed them with swords, he returned
- 7:06Speaker 1: to the city Nihor and gave battle unto his brother Korihor,
- 7:09Speaker 1: by which means he obtained the kingdom and restored it
- 7:11Speaker 1: unto his father KiB And now, because of the thing
- 7:14Speaker 1: which Shul had done, his father bestowed upon him the kingdom.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Therefore he began to reign in the stead of his father.
- 7:20Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he did execute judgment
- 7:23Speaker 1: in righteousness, and he did spread his kingdom upon all
- 7:25Speaker 1: the face of the land. For the people had become
- 7:27Speaker 1: exceedingly numerous, and it came to pass that Shul also
- 7:31Speaker 1: begat many sons and daughters, and Korihor repented of the
- 7:34Speaker 1: many evils which he had done. Wherefore Shul gave him
- 7:37Speaker 1: power in his kingdom. And it came to pass that
- 7:40Speaker 1: Korihor had many sons and daughters. And among the sons
- 7:43Speaker 1: of Korihor, there was one whose name was Noah. And
- 7:46Speaker 1: it came to pass that Noah rebelled against Shul the
- 7:49Speaker 1: King and also his father Korihor, and drew away Kohor,
- 7:52Speaker 1: his brother, and also all his brotherren and many of
- 7:55Speaker 1: the people. And he gave battle unto Shul the King,
- 7:58Speaker 1: in which he did obtain the land of their first inheritance,
- 8:01Speaker 1: and he became a king over that part of the land.
- 8:04Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he gave battle again
- 8:06Speaker 1: unto Shul the King, and he took Shul the King
- 8:09Speaker 1: and carried him away captive into Moron. And it came
- 8:12Speaker 1: to pass as he was about to put him to death,
- 8:14Speaker 1: the sons of Shul crept into the house of Noah
- 8:16Speaker 1: by night and slew him and broke down the door
- 8:18Speaker 1: of the prison and brought out their father and placed
- 8:21Speaker 1: him upon his throne in his own kingdom. Wherefore the
- 8:24Speaker 1: son of Noah did build up his kingdom in his stead. Nevertheless,
- 8:28Speaker 1: they did not gain power any more over. Shul the
- 8:30Speaker 1: King and the people who were under the reign of
- 8:32Speaker 1: Shul the King did prosper exceedingly and wax great. And
- 8:35Speaker 1: the country was divided, and there were two kingdoms, the
- 8:38Speaker 1: Kingdom of Shul and the kingdom of Kohor, the son
- 8:41Speaker 1: of Noah. And Kohor, the son of Noah, caused that
- 8:44Speaker 1: his people should give battle unto Shul, in which Shul
- 8:47Speaker 1: did beat them and did slay Kohor. And now Kohor
- 8:50Speaker 1: had a son who was called Nimrad. And Nimrad gave
- 8:53Speaker 1: up the kingdom of Kohor unto Shul, and he did
- 8:56Speaker 1: gain favor in the eyes of Shul. Wherefore Shul did
- 8:59Speaker 1: bestow great upon him, and he did doe in the
- 9:02Speaker 1: Kingdom of Shule according to his desires. And also in
- 9:05Speaker 1: the reign of Schule. There came prophets among the people
- 9:07Speaker 1: who were sent from the Lord, prophesying that the wickedness
- 9:10Speaker 1: and idolatry of the people was bringing a curse upon
- 9:13Speaker 1: the land, and they should be destroyed if they did
- 9:15Speaker 1: not repent. And it came to pass that the people
- 9:17Speaker 1: did revile against the prophets and did mock them. And
- 9:20Speaker 1: it came to pass that King Shul did execute judgment
- 9:23Speaker 1: against all those who did revile against the prophets. And
- 9:26Speaker 1: he did execute a law throughout all the land which
- 9:29Speaker 1: gave power unto the prophets, that they should go whithersoever
- 9:32Speaker 1: they would. And by this cause the people were brought
- 9:34Speaker 1: unto repentance. And because the people did repent of their
- 9:37Speaker 1: iniquities and idolatries, the Lord did spare them, and they
- 9:41Speaker 1: began to prosper again in the land. And it came
- 9:43Speaker 1: to pass that Shul begat sons and daughters in his
- 9:46Speaker 1: old age, and there were no more wars in the
- 9:48Speaker 1: days of Schule. And he remembered the great things that
- 9:51Speaker 1: the Lord had done for his fathers and bringing them
- 9:53Speaker 1: across the great deep into the promised land. Wherefore he
- 9:56Speaker 1: did execute judgment and righteousness all his days Ether chapter eight.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he begat Omer, and
- 10:05Speaker 1: Omer reigned in his stead, and Omer begat Jared, and
- 10:08Speaker 1: Jared begat sons and daughters, and Jared rebelled against his
- 10:12Speaker 1: father and came and dwelt in the land of Heath.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And it came to pass that he did flatter many
- 10:17Speaker 1: people because of his cunning words, until he had gained
- 10:20Speaker 1: the half of the kingdom. And when he had gained
- 10:22Speaker 1: the half of the kingdom, he gave battle unto his father,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and he did carry away his father into captivity, and
- 10:28Speaker 1: did make him serve in captivity. And now in the
- 10:31Speaker 1: days of the reigns of Omer, he was in captivity
- 10:33Speaker 1: the half of his days. And it came to pass
- 10:35Speaker 1: that he begat sons and daughters, among whom were Ezram
- 10:38Speaker 1: and Coriantomer. And they were exceedingly angry because of the
- 10:41Speaker 1: doings of Jared, their brother, insomuch that they did raise
- 10:44Speaker 1: an army and gave battle unto Jered. And it came
- 10:47Speaker 1: to pass that they did give battle unto him by night.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And it came to pass that when they had slain
- 10:51Speaker 1: the army of Jared, they were about to slay him also,
- 10:54Speaker 1: and he pled with them that they would not slay him,
- 10:57Speaker 1: and he would give up the kingdom unto his father.
- 10:59Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they did grant unto
- 11:01Speaker 1: him his life. And now Jered became exceedingly sorrowful because
- 11:05Speaker 1: of the loss of the kingdom, for he had set
- 11:07Speaker 1: his heart upon the kingdom and upon the glory of
- 11:09Speaker 1: the world. Now, the daughter of Jared, being exceedingly expert,
- 11:13Speaker 1: and seeing the sorrows of her father, thought to devise
- 11:16Speaker 1: a plan whereby she could redeem the kingdom unto her father. Now,
- 11:20Speaker 1: the daughter of Jared was exceedingly fair, and it came
- 11:23Speaker 1: to pass that she to talk with her father, and said,
- 11:25Speaker 1: unto him, whereby hath my father so much sorrow? Hath
- 11:29Speaker 1: he not read the record which our fathers brought across
- 11:31Speaker 1: the great deep? Behold, is there not an account concerning
- 11:34Speaker 1: them of old, that they, by their secret plans did
- 11:37Speaker 1: obtain kingdoms and great glory. And now therefore let my
- 11:41Speaker 1: father send for Akish, the son of Kymnor. And behold,
- 11:44Speaker 1: I am fair, and I will dance before him, and
- 11:47Speaker 1: I will please him that he will desire me to wife. Wherefore,
- 11:50Speaker 1: if he shall desire of thee that ye shall give
- 11:52Speaker 1: unto him me to wife, then shall ye say, I
- 11:55Speaker 1: will give her if ye will bring unto me the
- 11:56Speaker 1: head of my father, the king and now Omer was
- 12:00Speaker 1: a friend to Akish. Wherefore, when Jared had sent for Akish,
- 12:03Speaker 1: the daughter of Jared danced before him that she pleased
- 12:06Speaker 1: him insomuch that he desired her to wife. And it
- 12:09Speaker 1: came to pass that he said, unto Jared, give her
- 12:11Speaker 1: unto me to wife. And Jared said, unto him, I
- 12:14Speaker 1: will give her unto you, if ye will bring unto
- 12:17Speaker 1: me the head of my father, the king. And it
- 12:19Speaker 1: came to pass that Akish gathered in unto the house
- 12:22Speaker 1: of Jared all his kinsfolk, and said, unto them, will
- 12:25Speaker 1: ye swear unto me that ye will be faithful unto
- 12:27Speaker 1: me in the thing which I shall desire of you.
- 12:30Speaker 1: And it came to pass that they all swear unto
- 12:31Speaker 1: him by the God of heaven, and also by the heavens,
- 12:34Speaker 1: and also by the earth, and by their heads, that
- 12:36Speaker 1: whoso should vary from the assistance which Akish desired should
- 12:39Speaker 1: lose his head, and whoso should divulge whatsoever thing Akish
- 12:43Speaker 1: made known unto them, the same should lose his life.
- 12:46Speaker 1: And it came to pass that thus they did agree
- 12:48Speaker 1: with Akish, and AKSh did administer unto them the oaths
- 12:51Speaker 1: which were given by them of old, who also sought power,
- 12:54Speaker 1: which had been handed down even from Cain, who was
- 12:56Speaker 1: a murderer from the beginning. And they were kept up
- 12:59Speaker 1: by the power or of the devil, to administer these
- 13:01Speaker 1: oaths unto the people, to keep them in darkness, to
- 13:04Speaker 1: help such as sought power, to gain power, and to murder,
- 13:07Speaker 1: and to plunder, and to lie, and to commit all
- 13:09Speaker 1: manner of wickedness and hortoms. And it was the daughter
- 13:13Speaker 1: of Jared who put it into his heart to search
- 13:15Speaker 1: up these things of old, And Jared put it into
- 13:17Speaker 1: the heart of Akish. Wherefore Akish administered it unto his
- 13:20Speaker 1: kindred and friends, leading them away by fair promises to
- 13:24Speaker 1: do whatsoever thing he desired. And it came to pass
- 13:27Speaker 1: that they formed a secret combination, even as they of old,
- 13:31Speaker 1: which combination is most abominable and wicked above all in
- 13:34Speaker 1: the sight of God. For the Lord worketh not in
- 13:37Speaker 1: secret combinations. Neither doth he will that man should shed blood.
- 13:41Speaker 1: But in all things hath forbidden it from the beginning
- 13:43Speaker 1: of man. And now I, moron, I do not write
- 13:46Speaker 1: the manner of their oaths and combinations, for it hath
- 13:49Speaker 1: been made known unto me that they are had among
- 13:51Speaker 1: all people, and they are had among the Lamanites. And
- 13:54Speaker 1: they have caused the destruction of this people of whom
- 13:57Speaker 1: I am now speaking, and also the destruction of the
- 13:59Speaker 1: people of Nephi. And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret
- 14:03Speaker 1: combinations to get power and gain, until they shall spread
- 14:06Speaker 1: over the nation. Behold, they shall be destroyed. For the
- 14:10Speaker 1: Lord will not suffer that the blood of his saints,
- 14:12Speaker 1: which shall be shed by them, shall always cry unto
- 14:15Speaker 1: him from the ground for vengeance upon them. And yet
- 14:17Speaker 1: he avenge them not. Wherefore, o, ye gentiles, it is
- 14:21Speaker 1: wisdom in God that these things should be shown unto you,
- 14:24Speaker 1: that thereby ye may repent of your sins and suffer.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Not that these murderous combinations shall get above you, which
- 14:29Speaker 1: are built up to get power and gain. And the work, yea,
- 14:33Speaker 1: even the work of destruction come upon you. Yea, even
- 14:36Speaker 1: the sword of the justice of the Eternal God shall
- 14:38Speaker 1: fall upon you to your overthrow and destruction, if ye
- 14:41Speaker 1: shall suffer these things to be. Wherefore, the Lord commandeth you,
- 14:46Speaker 1: when ye shall see these things come among you, that
- 14:48Speaker 1: ye shall awake to a sense of your awful situation.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Because of this sacred combination which shall be among you,
- 14:54Speaker 1: or woe be unto it, because of the blood of
- 14:56Speaker 1: them who have been slain. For they cry from the
- 14:59Speaker 1: dust for vengeance upon it, and also upon those who
- 15:02Speaker 1: built it up. For it cometh to pass that whoso
- 15:05Speaker 1: buildeth it up seeketh to overthrow the freedom of all lands, nations,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and countries. And it bringeth to pass the destruction of
- 15:11Speaker 1: all people. For it is built up by the devil,
- 15:13Speaker 1: who is the father of all lies, even that same
- 15:16Speaker 1: liar who beguiled our first parents. Yea, even that same
- 15:19Speaker 1: liar who hath caused man to commit murder from the beginning,
- 15:22Speaker 1: who hath hardened the hearts of men, that they have
- 15:25Speaker 1: murdered the prophets, and stoned them and cast them out
- 15:28Speaker 1: from the beginning. Wherefore, I, Marona, I am commanded to
- 15:31Speaker 1: write these things, that evil may be done away, and
- 15:34Speaker 1: that the time may come that Satan may have no
- 15:36Speaker 1: power upon the hearts of the children of men, but
- 15:38Speaker 1: that they may be persuaded to do good continually, that
- 15:41Speaker 1: they may come unto the fountain of all righteousness and
- 15:43Speaker 1: be saved. Ether Chapter nine. And now I, Marona, I
- 15:50Speaker 1: proceed with my record. Therefore behold it came to pass
- 15:54Speaker 1: that because of the secret combinations of Akish and his friends, behold,
- 15:57Speaker 1: they did overthrow the kingdom of Omer. Nevertheless, the Lord
- 16:01Speaker 1: was merciful unto Omer, and also to his sons and
- 16:03Speaker 1: to his daughters, who did not seek his destruction. And
- 16:06Speaker 1: the Lord warned Omer in a dream that he should
- 16:08Speaker 1: depart out of the land. Wherefore Omer departed out of
- 16:11Speaker 1: the land with his family, and traveled many days, and
- 16:15Speaker 1: came over and passed by the Hill of Shim, and
- 16:17Speaker 1: came over by the place where the Nephites were destroyed,
- 16:20Speaker 1: and from thence eastward and came to a place which
- 16:22Speaker 1: was called Ablam by the sea shore. And there he
- 16:25Speaker 1: pitched his tent, and also his sons and his daughters,
- 16:28Speaker 1: and all his household save it were Jered in his family.
- 16:31Speaker 1: And it came to pass that Jered was anointed king
- 16:34Speaker 1: over the people by the hand of wickedness, and he
- 16:36Speaker 1: gave unto Akish his daughter to wife. And it came
- 16:39Speaker 1: to pass that Akish sought the life of his father
- 16:41Speaker 1: in law, and he applied unto those whom he had
- 16:44Speaker 1: sworn by the oath of the ancients, and they obtained
- 16:46Speaker 1: the head of his father in law, as he sat
- 16:49Speaker 1: upon his throne giving audience to his people. For so
- 16:52Speaker 1: great had been the spreading of this wicked and secret
- 16:55Speaker 1: society that it had corrupted the hearts of all the people. Therefore,
- 16:59Speaker 1: Jered was murder upon his throne, and Akish reigned in
- 17:02Speaker 1: his stead. And it came to pass that Akish began
- 17:05Speaker 1: to be jealous of his son. Therefore he shut him
- 17:08Speaker 1: up in prison and kept him upon little or no food,
- 17:10Speaker 1: until he had suffered death. And now the brother of
- 17:13Speaker 1: him that suffered death, and his name was Nimrah, was
- 17:16Speaker 1: angry with his father because of that which his father
- 17:18Speaker 1: had done unto his brother. And it came to pass
- 17:21Speaker 1: that Nimrah gathered together a small number of men and
- 17:24Speaker 1: fled out of the land and came over and dwelt
- 17:26Speaker 1: with Omer. And it came to pass that Akish begat
- 17:29Speaker 1: other sons, and they won the hearts of the people,
- 17:32Speaker 1: notwithstanding they had sworn unto him to do all manner
- 17:35Speaker 1: of iniquity according to that which he desired. Now, the
- 17:38Speaker 1: people of Akish were desirous for gain, even as Akish
- 17:41Speaker 1: was desirous for power. Wherefore the sons of Akish did
- 17:45Speaker 1: offer them money, by which means they drew away the
- 17:47Speaker 1: more part of the people after them, and there began
- 17:50Speaker 1: to be a war between the sons of Akish and Akish,
- 17:53Speaker 1: which lasted for the space of many years. Yea, unto
- 17:56Speaker 1: the destruction of nearly all the people of the kingdom. Yea,
- 17:59Speaker 1: even all save it were thirty souls, and they who
- 18:02Speaker 1: fled with the house of Omer. Wherefore Omer was restored
- 18:06Speaker 1: again to the land of his inheritance. And it came
- 18:08Speaker 1: to pass that Omer began to be old. Nevertheless, in
- 18:11Speaker 1: his old age, he begat Emer, and he anointed Emr
- 18:15Speaker 1: to be king, to reign in his stead. And after
- 18:17Speaker 1: that he had anointed Emer to be king. He saw
- 18:20Speaker 1: peace in the land for the space of two years,
- 18:22Speaker 1: and he died having seen exceedingly many days which were
- 18:26Speaker 1: full of sorrow. And it came to pass that Emer
- 18:28Speaker 1: did reign in his stead and did fill the steps
- 18:31Speaker 1: of his father, and the Lord began again to take
- 18:34Speaker 1: the curse from off the land. And the house of
- 18:36Speaker 1: Emer did prosper exceedingly under the reign of Emer, And
- 18:39Speaker 1: in the space of sixty and two years they had
- 18:42Speaker 1: become exceedingly strong, insomuch that they became exceedingly rich, having
- 18:47Speaker 1: all manner of fruit and of grain, and of silks,
- 18:49Speaker 1: and of fine linen, and of gold, and of silver,
- 18:51Speaker 1: and of precious things, and also all manner of cattle,
- 18:55Speaker 1: of oxen and cows, and of sheep, and of swine,
- 18:58Speaker 1: and of goats, and also many other kinds of animals,
- 19:00Speaker 1: which were useful for the food of man. And they
- 19:03Speaker 1: also had horses and asses. And there were elephants and
- 19:06Speaker 1: culums and coumams, all of which were useful unto man,
- 19:09Speaker 1: and more especially the elephants and culams and cumums. And
- 19:13Speaker 1: thus the Lord did pour out his blessings upon this land,
- 19:16Speaker 1: which was choice above all other lands. And he commanded
- 19:19Speaker 1: that whoso should possess the land should possess it unto
- 19:21Speaker 1: the Lord, or they should be destroyed when they were
- 19:24Speaker 1: ripened in iniquity. For upon such saith, the Lord I
- 19:27Speaker 1: will pour out the fullness of my wrath. And Emer
- 19:31Speaker 1: did execute judgment in righteousness all his days. And he
- 19:34Speaker 1: begat many sons and daughters, and he begat Coriantum, and
- 19:38Speaker 1: he anointed Coriantum to reign in his stead. And after
- 19:41Speaker 1: he had anointed Coriantum to reign in his stead. He
- 19:44Speaker 1: lived four years, and he saw peace in the land Yea,
- 19:48Speaker 1: and he even saw the Son of Righteousness, and did
- 19:50Speaker 1: rejoice and glory in his day. And he died in peace.
- 19:55Speaker 1: And it came to pass that Coriantum did walk in
- 19:57Speaker 1: the steps of his father, and did build many my
- 20:00Speaker 1: mighty cities, and did administer that which was good unto
- 20:02Speaker 1: his people in all his days. And it came to
- 20:05Speaker 1: pass that he had no children even until he was
- 20:07Speaker 1: exceedingly old. And it came to pass that his wife died,
- 20:11Speaker 1: being an hundred and two years old. And it came
- 20:14Speaker 1: to pass that Coriantum took to wife, in his old age,
- 20:16Speaker 1: a young maid, and begat sons and daughters. Wherefore he
- 20:20Speaker 1: lived until he was an hundred and forty and two
- 20:22Speaker 1: years old, and it came to pass that he begat Comb,
- 20:26Speaker 1: and Combe reigned in his stead, and he reigned forty
- 20:29Speaker 1: and nine years, and he begat Heath, and he also
- 20:32Speaker 1: begat other sons and daughters. And the people had spread
- 20:35Speaker 1: again over all the face of the land, and there
- 20:38Speaker 1: began again to be in exceedingly great wickedness upon the
- 20:41Speaker 1: face of the land, and Heath began to embrace the
- 20:43Speaker 1: secret plans again of old to destroy his father. And
- 20:47Speaker 1: it came to pass that he did dethrone his father,
- 20:50Speaker 1: for he slew him with his own sword, and he
- 20:52Speaker 1: did reign in his stead. And there came prophets in
- 20:55Speaker 1: the land again, crying repentance, unto them, that they must
- 20:59Speaker 1: prepare the way of the Lord, or there should come
- 21:00Speaker 1: a curse upon the face of the land. Yea, even
- 21:03Speaker 1: there should be a great famine in which they should
- 21:05Speaker 1: be destroyed if they did not repent. But the people
- 21:08Speaker 1: believed not the words of the prophets, and they cast
- 21:11Speaker 1: them out, and some of them they cast into pits
- 21:14Speaker 1: and left them to perish. And it came to pass
- 21:16Speaker 1: that they did all these things according to the commandment
- 21:18Speaker 1: of the King Heth. And it came to pass that
- 21:21Speaker 1: there began to be a great dearth upon the land,
- 21:24Speaker 1: and the inhabitants began to be destroyed exceedingly fast because
- 21:27Speaker 1: of the dearth, for there was no rain upon the
- 21:29Speaker 1: face of the earth. And there came forth poisonous serpents
- 21:33Speaker 1: also upon the face of the land, and did poison
- 21:35Speaker 1: many people. And it came to pass that their flocks
- 21:38Speaker 1: began to flee before the poisonous serpents towards the land southward,
- 21:42Speaker 1: which was called by the Nephites Zarahemla. And it came
- 21:45Speaker 1: to pass that there were many of them which did
- 21:47Speaker 1: perish by the way. Nevertheless, there were some which fled
- 21:51Speaker 1: into the land southward. And it came to pass that
- 21:53Speaker 1: the Lord did cause the serpents that they should pursue
- 21:56Speaker 1: them no more, but that they would hedge up the
- 21:58Speaker 1: way that the people could not pass, that whoso should
- 22:01Speaker 1: attempt to pass might fall by the poisonous serpents. And
- 22:04Speaker 1: it came to pass that the people did follow the
- 22:06Speaker 1: course of the beasts and did devour the carcasses of
- 22:08Speaker 1: them which fell by the way, until they had devoured
- 22:11Speaker 1: them all. Now, when the people saw that they must perish,
- 22:14Speaker 1: they began to repent of their iniquities and cry unto
- 22:17Speaker 1: the Lord. And it came to pass that when they
- 22:20Speaker 1: had humbled themselves sufficiently before the Lord, he did send
- 22:23Speaker 1: rain upon the face of the earth. And the people
- 22:26Speaker 1: began to revive again, and there began to be fruit
- 22:28Speaker 1: in the north countries and in all the countries round about.
- 22:32Speaker 1: And the Lord did show forth his power unto them
- 22:34Speaker 1: in preserving them from famine. End of Ether, Chapters five
