- 0:02Open registration starts tomorrow.
- 0:06Why do you do the open?
- 0:20I love the chase and the hunt and
- 0:22I set the pace when I'm running.
- 0:23I always take what I want and I
- 0:25always give it one hundred.
- 0:26Don't need a bank, no I'm funded.
- 0:28Play the game like it's nothing.
- 0:29I'm always thankful for something.
- 0:31Don't take for granted, stay humble.
- 0:32Now wake up!
- 0:34It's time to look at the enemy.
- 0:36Look in the mirror if he is no
- 0:38friend to me.
- 0:39It's not working out,
- 0:40maybe it's the chemistry.
- 0:41It's time to break up so I can
- 0:43make a better me.
- 0:44It's lunch time!
- 0:49what is going on everybody yeah on this
- 0:53channel we yabba dabba do we don't yabba
- 0:55dabba don't that is correct just saying um
- 1:01what is going on we got the cowboy
- 1:03in the house today giddy up giddy up
- 1:08what's up y'all um joseph ramirez yelling
- 1:12out lunchtime uh i have to say
- 1:16I caught Joseph in a behind-the-scenes
- 1:19video.
- 1:20Oh.
- 1:21Episode three.
- 1:25Now that I've met Joseph and I know
- 1:26who he is.
- 1:27It helps.
- 1:29I'm hanging out at the arena talking to
- 1:32some people down on the floor.
- 1:34And he was captured in the
- 1:37behind-the-scenes video.
- 1:40By captured, we mean on video.
- 1:42Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:45We're not talking about ice or anything
- 1:47like that on this show.
- 1:47No, no, no.
- 1:53Joseph got some camera time.
- 1:54Good deal.
- 1:57He was wearing a Dave Castro shirt.
- 1:59The person he was with was wearing a
- 2:01CEO shirt.
- 2:04I think Dave was more saying one of
- 2:06them has good taste,
- 2:07one of them not so much.
- 2:10Uh-oh.
- 2:14Joseph says,
- 2:15I wasn't doing anything illegal, I hope.
- 2:20I also hope you weren't doing anything
- 2:24illegal.
- 2:24He also says, before I start,
- 2:25I want to say the Steelers suck and
- 2:27Tomlin needs to go now.
- 2:30Why you got to start me off on
- 2:31a riff?
- 2:32Like, I am not a Steeler fan.
- 2:33My wife is, my family are,
- 2:35like everybody around me are Steeler fans.
- 2:38They're the most spoiled group of fans
- 2:41I've ever seen in my life.
- 2:43They have not had a losing season since
- 2:45like twenty two thousand two,
- 2:47something like that.
- 2:49They've won six Super Bowls.
- 2:51They are in the playoffs all the time.
- 2:54You and I root for teams that don't
- 2:56see that kind of success ever.
- 2:58Right.
- 2:59And they're so spoiled that like,
- 3:02let's fire the coach that actually gets
- 3:05more out of our players than than they
- 3:08should be putting out there.
- 3:11but it's not good enough for us,
- 3:13the Pittsburghers, the Yinzers,
- 3:16all of that.
- 3:17Let's fire them.
- 3:21Try being a Saints fan.
- 3:23Try being a Saints fan for most of
- 3:25your life.
- 3:28Tell me how that, like,
- 3:29and then report back later on.
- 3:31Like, through the paper bag years,
- 3:32whenever people show up to games wearing a
- 3:34paper bag on their head because they
- 3:35didn't want to be seen actually being
- 3:37there trying to support the team.
- 3:39Try that out.
- 3:40Let me know how that works out.
- 3:43Yeah,
- 3:44Bears and Saints fans each have a Super
- 3:46Bowl each.
- 3:47One.
- 3:48Uno.
- 3:50We've had some really shitty seasons
- 3:53around all that.
- 3:55Bengals fans, too,
- 3:56but they don't even have one,
- 3:57so we can't lump Andrew in with us
- 3:59because they have a big goose egg.
- 4:04They've been to three.
- 4:06They just lost them all.
- 4:08But yeah, Steelers fans are spoiled.
- 4:13They spoiled with all the success they've
- 4:14had.
- 4:18Crazy.
- 4:20Larry Young says, how about them Texans?
- 4:22That defense is legit.
- 4:25They put on a show last night.
- 4:30Never should have went to Tennessee.
- 4:32They should still be the Houston Oilers.
- 4:36So not having a losing season doesn't mean
- 4:38you're doing anything mediocre at best for
- 4:41a while now.
- 4:42Yeah, but if you look at the analytics,
- 4:45Mike Tomlin's wins over expectation are in
- 4:50the positive every single year.
- 4:53Every single year.
- 4:57Dude, we would have taken Mike Tomlin.
- 4:59Right.
- 4:59It's not Mike Tomlin.
- 5:01It's the people getting the talent.
- 5:03They haven't had a quarterback yet.
- 5:06You can't keep putting Duck Hodges out
- 5:09there and Mason Rudolph and a
- 5:12forty-two-year-old Aaron Rodgers and think
- 5:14you're going to win games in the playoffs.
- 5:16You're just not.
- 5:18I'll put it like this.
- 5:19I don't even know who those other two
- 5:20guys you said are.
- 5:21I know who Aaron Rodgers is.
- 5:23Exactly.
- 5:24If you would have got Aaron Rodgers in
- 5:26twenty seventeen, you'd have a shot.
- 5:28Yeah.
- 5:30But when he has his walker out and
- 5:33you have to avoid that from the center
- 5:36so he can get back into position.
- 5:38Like,
- 5:39I feel like you made the first two
- 5:40names up because I was like,
- 5:41Duck Dodgers in the twenty fifth and a
- 5:42half century from Looney Tunes back in the
- 5:47day is the first thing I remember you
- 5:48said that.
- 5:50So what Duck Hodges is most famous for
- 5:52now is he is married to Laney Wilson.
- 5:54Oh, yeah.
- 5:58Louisiana girl.
- 5:58Good for him.
- 5:59Yeah.
- 6:00So they, he, yeah, he got,
- 6:04he got a little bit of playing time
- 6:05one year in the NFL and I think
- 6:08he makes duck calls.
- 6:10So that's the name.
- 6:12Duck Hodges.
- 6:12Got it.
- 6:13Got it.
- 6:16Just, if you always derail the show, man,
- 6:18I just need someone to blame.
- 6:20Actually, every time Corey's on,
- 6:21we derail and that's kind of the plan.
- 6:23So I just need someone in chat to
- 6:25blame.
- 6:27Not a big deal.
- 6:35Sorry.
- 6:36Okay.
- 6:37We got a little bit of talk things
- 6:39to talk about today.
- 6:42Let's talk about Hiller's video on
- 6:44Achilles injuries.
- 6:46And the reason I want to bring this
- 6:47up is it came out as members only
- 6:51late Sunday night right before we went on
- 6:53the air.
- 6:54And I speculated why we have all the
- 6:56Achilles tears.
- 6:58And I said it was performance enhancing
- 7:00drugs.
- 7:04All right.
- 7:05I've actually thought that for more than a
- 7:07decade that we are by using the
- 7:11performance enhancing drugs,
- 7:12we're growing the muscles bigger than the
- 7:14tendons and ligaments can support.
- 7:17Got it.
- 7:18They just want to do that.
- 7:20Right.
- 7:20Right.
- 7:21Solid theory.
- 7:22Hiller's video had nothing to do with PEDs
- 7:25for a change.
- 7:26It was not a natty or not.
- 7:28It was none of that stuff.
- 7:31It was more about the overcompensation and
- 7:35imbalances that people have in their body.
- 7:39and how if not corrected,
- 7:41it puts you in a position where you're
- 7:43using the muscles and the tendons and the
- 7:46ligaments in ways that they weren't meant
- 7:48to be used.
- 7:49And then because of that,
- 7:51the ligaments and tendons give out.
- 7:55For the people out there listening,
- 7:56if you have not watched it yet,
- 7:58I highly recommend taking the time and go
- 8:00and sit down and watch it because first
- 8:03of all,
- 8:04it's a really well put together video,
- 8:06shout out to Hiller.
- 8:07And secondly, like,
- 8:08Holy smokes.
- 8:10You pick up a whole lot of information
- 8:11that you did not have before regarding
- 8:14injuries in general,
- 8:15not necessarily just Achilles,
- 8:18but just the stuff that dude was saying,
- 8:19like you said,
- 8:19about overcompensating from one spot to
- 8:22another and being able to look at somebody
- 8:24and look at their calves and look how
- 8:25they're moving.
- 8:26Whenever Bill was in the pool and he
- 8:29was watching, he's like, good, bad, good,
- 8:31bad, good, bad, every single time,
- 8:33on every single stroke.
- 8:35And it's because...
- 8:38People are probably naturally unbalanced,
- 8:40but you have to take work to be
- 8:42able to get everything moving like it
- 8:43should.
- 8:44And then once it's there, you're good.
- 8:48You're going to move a whole lot faster.
- 8:49You're going to be able to pick stuff
- 8:51up, put it down a whole lot faster,
- 8:53probably lift heavier,
- 8:54like all the good stuff.
- 8:55But most people just...
- 8:58ignore it.
- 9:02Yeah.
- 9:02I think that's my whole life coaches from
- 9:06like my swimming days, my football days,
- 9:08my lifting days to even more recently
- 9:11CrossFit days,
- 9:12every coach that I've had has been,
- 9:14you know, if, if,
- 9:15If you're doing something on the left,
- 9:17make sure you do it equal amounts on
- 9:19the right so that you are balanced, right?
- 9:21And that's the simplest way to look at
- 9:23things.
- 9:24But what kind of blew me away in
- 9:27this video was that Bill was
- 9:31overcompensating before the injury.
- 9:34Right.
- 9:35Like,
- 9:36he went back and looked at film and
- 9:38footage of Bill doing workouts and then
- 9:41noticed he had been overcompensating for
- 9:43years before the Achilles tear.
- 9:46And then he strongly believes that's
- 9:48what's caused the Achilles tear.
- 9:50And now they've got to correct those
- 9:52movement patterns to prevent it from
- 9:55happening again.
- 9:57Which is not an easy thing to do.
- 9:59No.
- 10:01No, no, no.
- 10:01Especially after years of doing it one
- 10:03way, trying to teach yourself.
- 10:05So that actually gives me a better
- 10:07understanding of why Bill may not have
- 10:10performed as well at the games this year.
- 10:13Because not only is he coming back from
- 10:15an Achilles tear,
- 10:17but he's relearning all these movements.
- 10:21And just like anything,
- 10:23if you watch a football game,
- 10:24when you're new to an offense,
- 10:26you have to think too much and you're
- 10:28slower.
- 10:30Yep.
- 10:30Right.
- 10:31What am I supposed to do?
- 10:32Where the thought process leaves and you
- 10:34just do,
- 10:36but he can't do that until he corrects
- 10:38these movements.
- 10:39Yeah.
- 10:44Um, knowing Bill, he's in,
- 10:47he works incredibly hard and he is really
- 10:49actually pretty darn smart in and of
- 10:52itself.
- 10:52So, um,
- 10:55he's probably taking it to heart like a
- 10:56whole lot more because I'm sure he does
- 10:58not want that to happen again.
- 11:02And we're really focused in,
- 11:04really super laser focused in on like,
- 11:06we're not going to let this happen again.
- 11:08Trust in this dude.
- 11:10He's going to get me straight to where
- 11:11when I go back,
- 11:12I can be not just at the games,
- 11:14be competitive at the games and try to
- 11:15get himself up into that position he wants
- 11:17to be in.
- 11:18The sign on his wall is still there.
- 11:19CrossFit Games champion.
- 11:21Like that's his ultimate goal.
- 11:23Always has been.
- 11:25oh if you didn't watch the video the
- 11:28one example the the the doctor of
- 11:31chiropractic used he he's more than that i
- 11:34hate calling a chiropractor because he's
- 11:36not just cracking bills back he's actually
- 11:38like doing analysis and like body movement
- 11:42and loosening up and like he does a
- 11:44lot of body work um but he said
- 11:48that like when he squats his one foot
- 11:51would drop
- 11:53Yeah.
- 11:53Every time he scored,
- 11:54he would get to the bottom of a
- 11:56squat and it would create an imbalance and
- 11:59they had to get that corrected.
- 12:01And that, I mean,
- 12:02squat is like the most foundational
- 12:07movement
- 12:08in crossfit and if that's off everything
- 12:11else is everything else is off so that
- 12:13was hilarious to me because uh it's
- 12:16hillary demist so he was squatting four
- 12:19ninety on one leg and he was like
- 12:21yeah essentially which is terrifying if
- 12:24you think about it like he's strong enough
- 12:28that that one side is is basically holding
- 12:30him up enough right i mean both sides
- 12:33are working but one side's working way
- 12:35harder
- 12:36to squat damn near five hundred pounds on
- 12:40one side.
- 12:41It's wild.
- 12:43Chad Anufi says the forty-niners should
- 12:45hire that guy.
- 12:46If you don't follow football,
- 12:48the forty-niners have had a ton of
- 12:50injuries this year.
- 12:52Just a ton.
- 12:53And a lot of them are soft tissue
- 12:55or ligament or... Right.
- 12:58So... Now in football,
- 13:01you are forced by another large human
- 13:03being to be in positions that you can't
- 13:05control.
- 13:11violently yes uh shannon amazing how the
- 13:16body can compensate it is it's one of
- 13:20the things he was saying like if you
- 13:22teach it long enough that this is what
- 13:24we're doing and the body just goes oh
- 13:25okay cool that is what we're doing it
- 13:27doesn't matter if it's awkward or if it's
- 13:30whatever the case may be like a habit
- 13:32is a habit it just becomes what's normal
- 13:35at that point
- 13:38Right,
- 13:38but if you put a smaller tire on
- 13:43one of your four wheels of your car,
- 13:47it'll still run and it'll still steer,
- 13:50but eventually it's going to jack things
- 13:52up.
- 13:54Yeah,
- 13:54sooner or later you're going to have a
- 13:55crash.
- 13:56Yeah.
- 13:57Or the wheel will fall off.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 13:59Yeah.
- 14:01Yeah.
- 14:02Great, great video.
- 14:03And it really thought provoking.
- 14:04I love when people make me think.
- 14:07And it's bad because when I was swimming
- 14:10competitively a lot, you know,
- 14:13and I swam distance,
- 14:14we were trained to breathe on the opposite
- 14:16side, like every third stroke.
- 14:20So, you know, breathe left, three strokes,
- 14:23breathe right.
- 14:24And that actually keeps your body more
- 14:29balanced, right?
- 14:33If you breathe to one side too much,
- 14:35you start to limp in the water is
- 14:37what we would call it.
- 14:39And because of that, it gets hairy.
- 14:43That's the case.
- 14:44I limp every single time I swim because
- 14:46I only breathe to one side for most
- 14:48of all intents and purposes.
- 14:50CJ, I know cars can't compensate.
- 14:52I was just trying to have a fun
- 14:54analogy to the process.
- 14:59Yeah.
- 15:00So yeah, so that's that.
- 15:05Before I get too far into this,
- 15:09you know what makes me feel like this?
- 15:11Where is my super suit?
- 15:16Third Z. Third Z, baby.
- 15:19When I take my third Z,
- 15:20I wake up feeling like Frozone.
- 15:25My super suit is on.
- 15:26I can attack the day.
- 15:27I can do the stuff.
- 15:30And you can get yours at thirdsy.com

- 15:44I did find out that they are now
- 15:47out of the salted caramel and it was
- 15:50a limited release for
- 15:52Oh, no.
- 15:53They are out of the salted caramel.
- 15:58Well, that's news.
- 16:01Yeah.
- 16:02So right now it's just hungry lemonade.
- 16:04We'll have to see if they come out
- 16:08with some new flavors.
- 16:09I know they do that periodically.
- 16:13I'm in.
- 16:15I probably got twenty servings left of my
- 16:17second bag of salted caramel.
- 16:20Well, damn, that's sad news.
- 16:27So, so yeah, it works, man.
- 16:32And to me,
- 16:34I can do a shot of flavor of
- 16:36anything if it's going to help me sleep.
- 16:39So I'm cool with that.
- 16:42If I pay attention,
- 16:44like last night is a perfect example.
- 16:46Drank it.
- 16:47We put James in the bed.
- 16:48We sat on the couch for a couple
- 16:49minutes watching TV or whatnot.
- 16:51And as soon as I find myself like
- 16:54doing that on the couch,
- 16:56just kind of drooping off or whatnot,
- 16:58get up and go to bed.
- 17:00Dude, I had incredible sleep last night.
- 17:05Andrew Sten says,
- 17:06Thirdsy gives me wild dreams.
- 17:09Your REM sleep gets better,
- 17:10and then you're sleeping deeper,
- 17:13so you get like those wild dreams.
- 17:15It's actually kind of cool.
- 17:17It's very vivid.
- 17:18Like I wake up remembering, remembering.
- 17:22Yeah, I've had some bananas one.
- 17:24Oh, yeah, I know, CJ.
- 17:28Bad on TV.
- 17:32Vicky says it's a sad day for Corey.
- 17:35I really do like that salted caramel.
- 17:37I do too.
- 17:38I love like heating it up a little
- 17:40bit of milk.
- 17:42Yeah.
- 17:43It's super good.
- 17:46So, but make sure you check that out.
- 17:47Thirdsy.com backslash, backslash Jazzy.
- 17:51So with that, the open,
- 17:53the open registration is tomorrow.
- 17:56Let's go.
- 17:57When was your first open?
- 17:59My first open was in two thousand and
- 18:01nineteen.
- 18:02The year we had to do it.
- 18:06Honestly,
- 18:07because everybody else at the gym was
- 18:08doing it.
- 18:09And once I found out what it was,
- 18:11I wanted to participate because I wanted
- 18:12to test myself against everybody else that
- 18:15was doing it and see where I stacked
- 18:17up.
- 18:18Probably was wildly overconfident at the
- 18:20time, if I had to guess.
- 18:22Like, oh yeah,
- 18:23this is going to be fantastic.
- 18:24And it's a gut check whenever you actually
- 18:26see it.
- 18:27and go oh okay thankfully i had uh
- 18:32bernard wags back there um to kind of
- 18:35say hey you're a masters athlete these are
- 18:38the people you need to actually be
- 18:39comparing yourself to not the rest of
- 18:42these people out here and kind of get
- 18:44me steered uh back on track to you
- 18:47know realize that yeah i'm competitive and
- 18:49i should absolutely is that a polite way
- 18:52to say you're you're just old corey
- 18:55and uh i mean you can call it
- 18:56what you want i'll say this dude but
- 19:00this and i he it's another piece of
- 19:02wisdom from uh from mr wags back there
- 19:05was me and we had a partner workout
- 19:07on our thursday night i'll never forget
- 19:09this and i had two young kids and
- 19:11my young kids i mean like nineteen twenty
- 19:13years old super fit right um and they
- 19:17beat us by like
- 19:20know five reps at the end of it
- 19:21between me and uh my other friend aaron
- 19:25and uh but i said yeah but he
- 19:29said if they beat y'all they beat two
- 19:31old guys and if they lost to y'all
- 19:34then they lost to two old guys like
- 19:36you really can't lose when it comes to
- 19:38like that kind of stuff in a masters
- 19:40uh being a masters athlete because yeah um
- 19:46my first one was twenty thirteen
- 19:49I've only missed one open since.
- 19:54And I did it because I had two
- 19:57friends that we hung out all the time,
- 19:59still do today.
- 20:01And they said, hey, let's try it.
- 20:04And they are,
- 20:05they were fitter than I was,
- 20:06I was stronger than them,
- 20:07but they were fitter than me.
- 20:09And,
- 20:11and I just came off like a two
- 20:12hundred pound weight loss.
- 20:14And my confidence was not over like yours.
- 20:17Mine was way under.
- 20:19I didn't think I was going to cause
- 20:20back then there was no scaled.
- 20:22There was no foundations.
- 20:23There was no out.
- 20:25It was RX or nothing.
- 20:26Right.
- 20:27And, uh,
- 20:29and it was one of the greatest experiences
- 20:31of my life.
- 20:33Um, we didn't,
- 20:35we were in the process of affiliation,
- 20:37but it hadn't gone through yet.
- 20:39So we had to videotape everything.
- 20:42The gym members would come in and they
- 20:44would,
- 20:45they would set up the videos for us.
- 20:46They would do all the work for us.
- 20:49Um,
- 20:49and then they would cheer us on
- 20:50afterwards.
- 20:51And then back in those days, you know,
- 20:54they would roll in a cooler,
- 20:55a beer for afterwards and everybody would
- 20:58hang out.
- 20:58And, and that was the five week open,
- 21:00uh,
- 21:01No scaled, no foundations, all RX.
- 21:04It was just a different world.
- 21:06And there are still videos out there of
- 21:09me attempting some of the movements that I
- 21:11didn't have in my tool belt at the
- 21:13time for lengthy periods of time,
- 21:16attempting and attempting.
- 21:19But that's what's cool.
- 21:20That was what was cool about it.
- 21:21I didn't have those movements,
- 21:23but that forced me to try.
- 21:26It forced me out of my comfort zone
- 21:29to get up on that pull-up bar and
- 21:32try a chest-to-bar or try a toes-to-bar.
- 21:36Those are two things I didn't have in
- 21:37that first Open.
- 21:39And then God help you if you got
- 21:41one,
- 21:41because I don't know about at your gym,
- 21:43but we had some people get one not
- 21:45the last year, but the year before last.
- 21:47My buddy Ethan got his first chest-to-bar
- 21:49during the Open,
- 21:50and you would have thought somebody just
- 21:51won the lottery.
- 21:53Oh, I know.
- 21:55screaming, yelling, you know, and then,
- 21:58okay, he's still got time.
- 21:59Like, let's go.
- 22:00Let's get another one.
- 22:01Three and four.
- 22:02Let's go.
- 22:02Yeah.
- 22:03Yeah.
- 22:05Like we'll celebrate for, for, for, for,
- 22:06for, for, for, for, for, for, for, for,
- 22:08for, for, I've seen first muscle ups.
- 22:09I've seen first ring muscle ups.
- 22:12I've seen first double unders.
- 22:14I've seen all that kind of stuff.
- 22:16It is so awesome.
- 22:19One of the funniest stories is,
- 22:21so we had the rig with the top
- 22:22and the bottom bar.
- 22:24And I did a toes to the second
- 22:26bar.
- 22:27But I didn't get the one I was
- 22:29holding on to.
- 22:33And I lost my shit in the moment.
- 22:36And then the judge was like, sorry,
- 22:38no rep.
- 22:42Yeah.
- 22:42You can't just pick any bar on the
- 22:43rig to hit your toes to.
- 22:45It has to be the one you're actually
- 22:46holding on to.
- 22:48Although, if Dave's listening...
- 22:52wouldn't be the worst idea i've ever heard
- 22:53of it'd be interesting to say at least
- 22:55toes to the second bar toes to the
- 22:57second bar hundred percent that's actually
- 23:00some grid league let's not let's not even
- 23:02let's not actually do that let's move on
- 23:04oh it's magic
- 23:06It's the open magic, right?
- 23:07I got my first bar muscle up the
- 23:09day before we had,
- 23:13it was the snatches and burpees and in
- 23:20three minutes rest and in snatches and bar
- 23:23muscle ups or burpees and bar muscle ups.
- 23:26And my first bar muscle up the day
- 23:27before that,
- 23:28you probably heard me scream from wherever
- 23:30you were because I had yelled like I,
- 23:33And then did the workout on Friday,
- 23:36did not get a single bar muscle up,
- 23:38redid it on Monday and got either six
- 23:40or nine, something like that.
- 23:43Like it's ridiculous, dude.
- 23:45Yeah.
- 23:47Again,
- 23:47everything you just get forced outside
- 23:49your comfort zone and that you need to
- 23:52do things that are uncomfortable
- 23:53sometimes.
- 23:55That's what makes you better in life.
- 23:59You don't avoid the uncomfortable,
- 24:01you embrace it and you attack it.
- 24:04And that's what the open gives us every
- 24:06single year.
- 24:08Lean in.
- 24:09You can complain about the simplicity of
- 24:12it or that it's not what it used
- 24:14to be.
- 24:15It's still that thing that makes your
- 24:18heart race every night,
- 24:20every Thursday night or Thursday afternoon
- 24:21when they released the announcement.
- 24:24It's still that thing that you can't sleep
- 24:26the night before.
- 24:27You got to go into the gym and
- 24:28somehow try to perform it.
- 24:31And nothing else does that during the
- 24:33year.
- 24:34Everything else is just a workout.
- 24:38And one time a year,
- 24:39you need that thing that kicks you in
- 24:42the ass and says,
- 24:44you're going to be uncomfortable for three
- 24:46weeks.
- 24:48And if you're one of the twenty five
- 24:49percent that are the best in the world,
- 24:51we're going to be uncomfortable another
- 24:53weekend of four events or five events.
- 24:58And that there's a beauty to that.
- 25:02And no going in and going against your
- 25:05friend where nobody's really watching and
- 25:07you don't have to post a score.
- 25:10Nothing else does that.
- 25:11It's during the open where all that
- 25:13happens.
- 25:16Your average Thursday night,
- 25:17five thirty class is one thing,
- 25:19but the open score is forever.
- 25:22It is.
- 25:24Period.
- 25:24End of story.
- 25:26And that's why you should sign up.
- 25:28Yeah.
- 25:30because everybody needs to be
- 25:32uncomfortable periodically.
- 25:35Everybody needs to be uncomfortable
- 25:36periodically.
- 25:37Everybody needs to participate on more
- 25:40than just a,
- 25:41I showed up for class level at their
- 25:43box, right?
- 25:48Ninety percent of the times people roll
- 25:50in, it's Tuesday, did the workout,
- 25:53talked to some people, whatever,
- 25:54went on back to their house.
- 25:56If your gym is putting on some sort
- 25:59of Friday night lights, show up.
- 26:03Be a part of it.
- 26:04It's fun.
- 26:06You're going to get to watch everybody
- 26:07else go.
- 26:08You're going to get to go.
- 26:09Maybe you'll be in the first heat.
- 26:10Maybe you'll be in the last heat,
- 26:11but you're still going to be people there
- 26:13screaming at you to go pick up the
- 26:15bar, jump on the rig.
- 26:16Come on, let's move.
- 26:17Get up the entire time.
- 26:20That's how it is at my gym.
- 26:21Like we are,
- 26:23I can't talk generally for all three
- 26:26weekends after Friday night lights,
- 26:28like Saturday and Sunday,
- 26:29my voice is shot to shit because I'm
- 26:30screaming at everybody.
- 26:33And you never know what's going to happen.
- 26:35One day I walked into CrossFit Polaris.
- 26:37I went to do the open workout that
- 26:39was deadlifts and burpees.
- 26:41What was that?
- 26:41Twenty three, twenty, twenty three,
- 26:43twenty four, twenty.
- 26:47Oh, God, Lord.
- 26:48Twenty three point two.
- 26:50Maybe I go I go in a mind
- 26:52of my own business.
- 26:53I'm doing my deadlifts.
- 26:54I'm doing my burpees.
- 26:56I get up to do the next set
- 26:57up.
- 26:57And it was like what?
- 26:59Like one, two, three, four, five or.
- 27:02And then it went back down.
- 27:03Yeah, to ten and back down.
- 27:04And I go to get,
- 27:05I'm up in like that ten range.
- 27:08And I'm,
- 27:08my hands on my knees trying to catch
- 27:10my breath so I can do the deadlift.
- 27:13And Sam Briggs starts yelling at me.
- 27:15And I didn't even know she was there.
- 27:18She's yelling in my face.
- 27:20Why is this English chick yelling at me?
- 27:28And if Sam Briggs yells in your face
- 27:30that you need to do something,
- 27:32you freaking pick up the bar.
- 27:34You absolutely pick up the bar.
- 27:37I love that story.
- 27:38And what was awesome is when it's all
- 27:40over and she's done yelling at me and
- 27:42I'm dead on the floor,
- 27:44she comes over and goes,
- 27:45I'd like to apologize.
- 27:49No, you're not apologizing.
- 27:51You knew what you were doing the whole
- 27:53damn time.
- 27:57It was my favorite thing to ever.
- 28:00I same favorite the first year I did
- 28:02the open and it was the first workout
- 28:04was burpees to six inches and and snatches
- 28:11increasing weight.
- 28:14the fun that me and my buddies had
- 28:16that first open workout trying to snatch
- 28:20weight.
- 28:20We've never tried before.
- 28:23Um, the night before trying to,
- 28:24it was the worst English accent ever.
- 28:27You're right.
- 28:28I should be ashamed of myself.
- 28:31Um, it was like half Indian, half Asian.
- 28:34I don't even know what I was doing.
- 28:36Um,
- 28:36but the fun that me and my buddies
- 28:38had that first ever workout,
- 28:40even Sam Briggs yelling at me,
- 28:41can't top that.
- 28:42Yeah.
- 28:45I clearly remember nineteen point one to
- 28:48rowing in ball balls.
- 28:49Nineteen calories in a row or nineteen
- 28:51more balls just on and on and on
- 28:53and on.
- 28:54After I don't remember how many rounds it
- 28:57was,
- 28:57but at some point I got tunnel vision
- 29:01and like your body's just in just movement
- 29:04mode.
- 29:04Right.
- 29:05So I couldn't see I could hear the
- 29:08music.
- 29:09I could hear Sarah counting because she
- 29:12was judging me.
- 29:13And I could hear one person yelling at
- 29:15me, my buddy,
- 29:19Oh, good Lord.
- 29:21Anyway,
- 29:22one person yelled at me out of all
- 29:23the other voices that were there,
- 29:25like his was the only one I could
- 29:26hear.
- 29:27And like,
- 29:27I couldn't see anything else when he and
- 29:30Cecil yelled time,
- 29:31I fell off the roller with like one
- 29:32foot still strapped into the,
- 29:34to it and whatnot.
- 29:35And he was like, stop being dramatic.
- 29:36And I was like,
- 29:37I'm not being dramatic dog.
- 29:38I'm about to die.
- 29:41This is not good.
- 29:43John George, that was a brutal one.
- 29:45I was catching one-thirty-five snatches on
- 29:46my knees.
- 29:47They counted.
- 29:48Back in those days,
- 29:50catching on the knee counted.
- 29:51If you could stand it up.
- 29:53Yeah.
- 29:55Calls in CrossFit.
- 29:57Not anymore,
- 29:58but it did for a brief time until
- 30:01like the twenty-fourteen games,
- 30:02twenty-fifteen games.
- 30:03Lauren Brooks famously caught the snatch
- 30:06on her knee and stood it up,
- 30:07and then after that, they outlawed it.
- 30:08Yeah, they wanted to do another one.
- 30:12Is it toe-to-bar or toes-to-bar?
- 30:15If you're Dave Castro, it's toe-to-bar.
- 30:19I'm going to default to Dave.
- 30:20But I have ten of them,
- 30:22so I'm going to say it's – and
- 30:24you can't just hit one toe to the
- 30:26bar because you have to hit with both
- 30:28feet simultaneously.
- 30:30So you have to at least hit with
- 30:31two.
- 30:33So then it's toes-to-bar.
- 30:35I generally hit with two.
- 30:38My two big toes is what normally makes
- 30:39contact with the board.
- 30:40I don't think I've ever hit my pinky
- 30:43toe on the bar while doing toe-to-bar.
- 30:45I'm one of those people where the second
- 30:46toe is bigger than my big toe.
- 30:50Yeah, I don't have that problem.
- 30:55Toes or laces?
- 30:56What are we talking about?
- 30:57So when you hit the bar,
- 30:58do you actually hit with your toes or
- 31:00the laces of your shoe?
- 31:02It depends on my level of fatigue.
- 31:04Okay.
- 31:06True that.
- 31:08I'm going to be completely honest with
- 31:09you.
- 31:10It really depends on my level of fatigue.
- 31:14Straight up.
- 31:16Yeah.
- 31:17So I have a meeting at one o'clock,
- 31:18so I'm going to have to pick up
- 31:19the pace a little bit here.
- 31:24Scott,
- 31:25did you know about that overhead squat
- 31:26standard that Seth Jumpship posted about?
- 31:29I was convinced you could do them with
- 31:31bent elbows.
- 31:33I didn't see Seth's video.
- 31:36He put up a picture of somebody doing
- 31:38overhead squats and was like,
- 31:40do these count?
- 31:42It's just like five of them or something
- 31:44like that.
- 31:46And the dude's arms were like this the
- 31:49whole time.
- 31:50So like I voted, it's like,
- 31:52none of them count because you need to
- 31:54be here, not there.
- 31:56And Andrew Stenek can correct me if I'm
- 31:58wrong.
- 31:58My,
- 31:59what I've always been taught in judging
- 32:00standard is as long as the bar does
- 32:03not touch the top of the head or
- 32:05fall below the top of the head,
- 32:07it is a good rep.
- 32:08But again,
- 32:09it's going to depend on the standard of
- 32:11that competition and the standard that
- 32:14your gym holds you to.
- 32:16Right.
- 32:18So like,
- 32:21Right.
- 32:21There's Andrew.
- 32:22He depends on the standard given by the
- 32:24competition.
- 32:26Yeah.
- 32:26A lot of standards did not even address
- 32:31the elbows.
- 32:32It is the barb remaining above the head
- 32:35through the squat.
- 32:36But if you're squatting heavy weight
- 32:38overhead and you have bent elbows,
- 32:40your chances of success are very low.
- 32:44Slim to none, I would say.
- 32:46Yeah.
- 32:51um yeah andrewston i agree with scott if
- 32:56it's above the head it counts it's just
- 32:58harder if your arms are bent yeah i
- 33:04can't imagine trying to overhead squat
- 33:05like this like this would this is not
- 33:07a
- 33:11It's crazy.
- 33:11All right, a couple quick hit notes.
- 33:14Sahir Khaya decided to retire.
- 33:16Saw that.
- 33:16She's competing competitively.
- 33:19Great athlete actually brought attention
- 33:21to the Asian women where she actually
- 33:24could compete with the Games athletes and
- 33:27gave her and Shung Young Choi gave Asia
- 33:31actually credibility as a region for that.
- 33:36In addition to that, Belites,
- 33:38I think is how it's pronounced,
- 33:40is coming back as the apparel sponsor of
- 33:44the CrossFit Games.
- 33:45And it looks like grips and apparel.
- 33:50Okay.
- 33:54I've never used their grips.
- 33:55I mean,
- 33:57I know some people that have their apparel
- 33:58from the games actually seem to be pretty
- 34:02nice.
- 34:03Like we were talking about before we went
- 34:04online,
- 34:04the only thing I would request is more
- 34:06color.
- 34:07Mr. Velites, man,
- 34:08if you are watching this today,
- 34:10give us some bright colors.
- 34:13Give us some bright colors.
- 34:14Bring back two thousand and twelve.
- 34:16It is a real sponsor to the real
- 34:18keeps running on my other screen.
- 34:22It is rope as well.
- 34:25So it looks like it's apparel, grips,
- 34:27and ropes.
- 34:28I actually have one of their ropes.
- 34:30I have a heavy rope from them that
- 34:32I bought from Monster Games.
- 34:35It spins pretty well,
- 34:37but all I have is the heavy rope
- 34:38for it and the heavy handles,
- 34:39so I don't use it that often.
- 34:42But it seems like it works pretty well.
- 34:44Ask Colton Mertens what he thinks of their
- 34:45ropes.
- 34:47Oh, thank you.
- 34:49I'm not trying to fight the hog.
- 34:50Hopefully he says improve their bras.
- 34:53So do I, Lito.
- 34:54Honestly,
- 34:55the one I got is not super supportive
- 34:57at all.
- 34:57Yeah.
- 35:00I was telling...
- 35:03Corey, before we came on the air,
- 35:05that at least Belites does have some
- 35:06color.
- 35:07Last year, they had some blues,
- 35:09they had some maroons,
- 35:10and it actually allowed me,
- 35:12I'm still editing the Hattie documentary.
- 35:15I was just doing some this weekend.
- 35:17And because of the different colors and
- 35:19the switches up,
- 35:22I've been able to tell what video was
- 35:24from what event that she participated in.
- 35:28so more colors more better for film
- 35:30editing just to say and i am trying
- 35:33to get that out just as a big
- 35:34announcement uh before the open uh i want
- 35:38to release it like right before the open
- 35:41um and it's almost done i'm just putting
- 35:43some finishing touches on it right now
- 35:45roger that oh
- 35:50I got some Belites ropes and they're very
- 35:52lightweight and spin well,
- 35:53but they do break frequently.
- 35:55Yeah.
- 35:56Ask Colton Mertens.
- 35:57And I'm with Andrew and Mark Phillips.
- 36:00I love the Reebok colors.
- 36:01I miss the Reebok colors.
- 36:02When I see the old footage,
- 36:03it was so easy to tell who your
- 36:05favorite CrossFitters were because they
- 36:07would pick like a color combination and
- 36:09you just knew what to look for on
- 36:11the floor.
- 36:12I miss it.
- 36:14Not just from like a style standpoint,
- 36:16but from an ease of telling who is
- 36:18who.
- 36:20yeah it gave her and the options that
- 36:23those guys had back then allowed them to
- 36:26like customize what they looked like every
- 36:27day and nobody looked the same it wasn't
- 36:30four people in maroon shirts doing one
- 36:32workout um i thought corey might not want
- 36:37the bras fixed to be honest i want
- 36:40my bra fixed just saying later
- 36:46All right.
- 36:46So last thing I wanted to talk about,
- 36:47and I only have about four minutes.
- 36:49So partnerships, CrossFit,
- 36:52this is probably a longer discussion.
- 36:53We'll probably bring it back tomorrow.
- 36:56They have announced a partnership with
- 36:57Coaches Congress.
- 36:58Saw that.
- 37:00And this is now in addition to other
- 37:03partnerships like Wadapalooza doing the
- 37:05open announcement at Wadapalooza.
- 37:07This is doing things like I'm having Pitt
- 37:11and Legends and Wheelwad run aspects of
- 37:15the CrossFit Games.
- 37:17what I want to talk about tomorrow is,
- 37:20is this a good direction that CrossFit is
- 37:24going by increasing the partnerships
- 37:28forever?
- 37:28CrossFit was a one entity show.
- 37:32They ran it all from media to how
- 37:35the games ran at every level,
- 37:37every aspect.
- 37:38And now they're really embracing this
- 37:41partnership thing.
- 37:42Is this the way to go?
- 37:44And again, we can expand on this tomorrow,
- 37:46but just initial thought.
- 37:48Initial thought was it right off the bat
- 37:51is when Greg was running the show back
- 37:54in the old days and he didn't know
- 37:56something, he went and found an expert,
- 37:58a subject matter expert to bring in and
- 38:01teach it to people,
- 38:02teach it to him and teach it to
- 38:03other people and teach him how to teach
- 38:05other people.
- 38:06So this is what the kind of stuff
- 38:07that they're doing, then good,
- 38:10because I've never heard anything bad
- 38:12about Coaches Congress.
- 38:14Like people that went,
- 38:15got nothing but good stuff off of it.
- 38:17So if this is the kind of path
- 38:18that they're taking, like, hey,
- 38:19I'm going to partner up with these guys
- 38:21because the resources that they have are
- 38:24going to be beneficial for everybody who
- 38:27is in an affiliate,
- 38:28everybody who's running an affiliate,
- 38:29everybody's coaching an affiliate,
- 38:31then yes, outstanding.
- 38:33Let's go ahead and do that.
- 38:35Yeah,
- 38:35we'll talk about this tomorrow for sure.
- 38:39We got a couple hated the beige games.
- 38:42Shanna hated the noble color same year
- 38:44after year.
- 38:46But then we have Catherine McGee as a
- 38:48designer.
- 38:49I'm in the minority in terms of liking
- 38:50the more neutral color schemes.
- 38:52Noble was definitely more modern in terms
- 38:54of that aesthetic,
- 38:55but I think Belites struck a good balance.
- 39:01I hear you, Kate.
- 39:02I actually, I didn't mind Belites.
- 39:04I did not like Goruck,
- 39:06and I did not like...
- 39:08uh, noble, but I do like,
- 39:10I did like the Belites.
- 39:12I,
- 39:13I thought the fits weren't as good as
- 39:15some of the other apparel brands.
- 39:17Like you could see people like tugging at
- 39:19their clothes a lot more adjusting stuff.
- 39:23Yeah.
- 39:24So I think if they could fit and
- 39:25maybe that's what Lito's talking about,
- 39:26about the sports bra.
- 39:27Um,
- 39:29I don't know how long they've been in
- 39:30the game with all this stuff.
- 39:31Maybe if they can get a better fit,
- 39:34um,
- 39:36I don't know.
- 39:37Yeah,
- 39:37Joseph is still waiting on his Noble
- 39:39jersey.
- 39:40You and everybody else, Joseph.
- 39:44I still don't understand the complexity of
- 39:46that, how that is so hard.
- 39:48It's the same template.
- 39:51You're just changing the name.
- 39:55At Monster Games,
- 39:56they literally put our names on our shirts
- 39:59at the venue.
- 40:02Like, oh, you got a shirt?
- 40:03Cool.
- 40:04Here's your thing with your name on it.
- 40:05Where do you want it?
- 40:06Front or back?
- 40:07Back.
- 40:07Okay, cool.
- 40:09Heat press.
- 40:11Here's your shirt.
- 40:12Going about your day.
- 40:14Catherine McGee completely forgot about
- 40:15GORUCK, a.k.a.
- 40:17forgettable.
- 40:18Yeah,
- 40:19it was semi-noble with camo thrown in.
- 40:24That's probably the most apt description
- 40:25I've ever heard of the GORUCK uniform.
- 40:27And the fonts weren't even as cool.
- 40:34I mean,
- 40:35a lot of Masters Games athletes are still
- 40:37waiting on their Yeti bottles.
- 40:39Oh, damn.
- 40:41Don't get me started with Yeti.
- 40:42All right, I got to go.
- 40:45And when it comes to, like,
- 40:46these people and whether they're going to
- 40:49fulfill their promises.
- 40:50Look, man,
- 40:50I ain't falling for no banana in my
- 40:51tailpipe.
- 40:54Exactly.
- 40:55Ain't going to fall for no banana in
- 40:56the tailpipe.
- 40:57No, I will not.
- 41:00With that, I will be back tomorrow.
- 41:03Cowboy, you here tomorrow?
- 41:04I am.
- 41:06All right.
- 41:06We will see you all then.
- 41:08Have a great rest of your day.
- 41:09We'll see you tomorrow.
- 41:11Bye, guys.
