- 1:17it's Tom for today's adventure, Frank Race, The Adventure of the Mormon Country.
- 1:23The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Paul dubub The war changed many things,
- 1:38the face of the earth and the people on it. Before the war,
- 1:42Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he traded his law books.
- 1:45But the cloak and dagger of the oss and when it was over, his
- 1:49former life was over too. Adventure had become his business, The Adventures of
- 1:55Frank Race. And now we joined Frank race for the adventure of the Mormon
- 2:15Country. A dinner jacket is hardly the thing the word of Joe Bell's saloon
- 2:24on the Lower East Side. But I was wearing mine, clinging to the
- 2:29hope that the call from Bruce Benton of Transpacific Life Insurance was nothing more than
- 2:32the gag of a warped mine. If it was, I had a date
- 2:37with the lady that I'd be able to keep later. But it wasn't a
- 2:39gag. Benton was there in an isolated booth. As Mark Donovan and I
- 2:44walked in, I thought I was kidnean inch. Well that's Benton over there,
- 2:49And it's Benton all right, and that, I fear means that my
- 2:52lady of the evening dines alone. Hello Race, Hello Bruce Tony. I'd
- 2:59take him up, mister Button. Thanks Donovan, Sit on, boys,
- 3:04what's up Bruce? This saloon is hardly the type of place when an insurance
- 3:07company vice president to be keeping late office hours. Something came up, something
- 3:12I'd rather handle in an unorthodox manner. I called you to the office or
- 3:16picked one of the usual meeting places. Well, that wouldn't be quiet.
- 3:21Would a foundry would be more quiet? In his joint quiet with the poor
- 3:25choice of words, Let's say, secret, what's the job first? I
- 3:30want you to be a go between the payment of fifty thousand dollars. It's
- 3:35ransom money. Race, somebody in your family been kidnapped. No victim is
- 3:39Walter Krueger one of our policy holders. And wait a minute, I know
- 3:43that guy who doesn't Walder Krueger better known as Sonny Krueger, playboy and air
- 3:47to one of the largest fortunes in the country. But how is it your
- 3:51being tapped for the ransom? Bruce, We're dealing with the clever gang.
- 3:54Race. They haven't bothered the family. Dealing on a business basis without risking
- 4:00the emotionalism. I still can't see why you want to pay off. We
- 4:02have Krueger insured for three hundred thousand dollars. The double indemnity that six hundred
- 4:09thousand we don't pay off, they'll kill him badly. God, that is
- 4:13smart. Either you pay the fifty gs or lose six hundred g's. I
- 4:17can see your point, but I can't buy it. Bruce, refuse in
- 4:19calling the FBI. And don't get me wrong, Race, I'm not playing
- 4:25bar with him. I'm just trying to save Krueger's life. Once he's set
- 4:29free. We'll spend a million if we have to to bring the criminals in.
- 4:32That's better. Where do I start. There's fifty thou twenty dollars bills
- 4:38in this lunch paid. I've named you was go between. They'll contact you
- 4:43in arrange for a pickup. I don't know when or how, and after
- 4:46I deliver, we have the serial numbers. Naturally, all banks will be
- 4:51informed, alotted, and we pin them down to a central point of operation.
- 4:56Then you can go after them, race and no holds barred. All
- 5:00right, I'll take it good Now, I guess you might as well give
- 5:05douted here and there's a side door. I'll have another drink and lead later.
- 5:11Right, come on, lord, let's go. Brother carrying that kind
- 5:15of door and his joining a happy idea, especially the way you I dressed
- 5:19it. We'll be out soon. Then I'm in for a lonely evening.
- 5:23At the telephone and the lady calls, I'll have to hang up a year.
- 5:29I left the con in front of the joint so we can go through
- 5:30this alley. Sure, come through, but don't be in a hurry.
- 5:36He stood in the shadow of the doorway, where the street light at the
- 5:40end of the alley couldn't pick out his face, but the gun in his
- 5:43hand was very visible. Two other men were crouched behind the rubbish cans at
- 5:46the far side of the alley. You got a package to deliver, start
- 5:50unload. Just drop it on the ground. It's rather valuable. Yeah,
- 5:54I know it's valuable. Don't monkey around. No, may I have a
- 6:00receipt? Will I give you one? But I don't think you'd like it.
- 6:03Walk through your car slow and get lost. I'll do it reluctantly.
- 6:09I hope we meet again someday. I think we can jump up. No
- 6:12stair play this time. I don't know what you're mumbling, but I don't
- 6:15like it. Now move, Come on, Marcus. We'll send a guest
- 6:20home in a couple of days. Meanwhile, be like the little fisk boyd.
- 6:26It's time to retire before somebody blows your candle outs. I know it,
- 6:39I know what it happens every time. What's the matter? Mark?
- 6:42Every time I get in one of these cases which it starts out a nice
- 6:45solid ground, but so in no, old lady, you dragged me into
- 6:47the wind. Blow yonder and I ain't no Poppy Boyington. Relax and take
- 6:53a look at this man. Ransom bills have turned up in all the circled
- 6:56areas cities in Idaho, Montana, Arizona. About it. Yeah, it's
- 7:00so. How are you going to find a guy was pushing There's one good
- 7:02sized city in the area that hasn't been touched right there. Oh yeah,
- 7:08salt Lake City. You figured I'll try to unload some of the door tore.
- 7:11No. They must have skipped Salt Lake City for a reason, and
- 7:15I think the reason is simple. They're working out of Salt Lake City.
- 7:18They wouldn't push any of the bills too close to their base. Oh you
- 7:21were rubber burning salt like before, right, and the winter it's great for
- 7:27she shang. You mean gyles. Maybe maybe i'd better say skiing before you
- 7:31get into trouble. This is Mormon country and you'd better be on your good
- 7:34behavior. Yeah. I'll grow wings and make like an age. That's a
- 7:39matter of fact. I feel a lot safer up here with a spare set
- 7:42of wings. Oh, go get yourself a magazine. I want to take
- 7:44a nap. Okay, be back. May I sit down for a moment,
- 7:50mister, brace for a moment, I thought I dozed off and had
- 7:55myself a vision. She was standing over me, and her eyes were like
- 7:59vile, but there was fire behind them, just like that smoldering something in
- 8:03her voice. Then she slipped in the mark seat, and her hand,
- 8:07very soft, very alive, and very feminine, settled over mind. You
- 8:13don't remember me? Do you miss the race? If I should and I
- 8:18don't, I ought to be shot. I'm Sibyl Anderson. The insurance company
- 8:22hired you to keep an eye on the family jewelry at my coming up party
- 8:28in nineteen forty six. But you can't be that scrawny little society girl.
- 8:31I've grown up a little. It happens, m It should happen every girl,
- 8:37didn't. I read something about you getting yourself engaged last year, but
- 8:41it didn't take. My father, unfortunately, went broke, and I found
- 8:46it hard to keep up with Sonny Krueger and his pal. You were going
- 8:52to marry Krueger, yes, but not anymore? Were you a bound forcibil
- 8:56same destination as yours? Race, Salt Lake City vacation. No, I've
- 9:03been living there for a while, you know, Race, I've become a
- 9:07career girl. I found that a smart girl can make a lot of money
- 9:11on her own. Why are you going to study the habits of smart people
- 9:16who make a lot of money on their own? If Sybil Anderson was throwing
- 9:26out a trail deliberately, she couldn't be as bright as she looked. Mark
- 9:31and I took turns following her for a couple of days, but her activity
- 9:33seemed as innocent as those of a campfire girl on the night before a rally.
- 9:37We gave it up finally and headed for the Great Salt Lake to have
- 9:41a swim, or rather afloat. You know they don't need a water here
- 9:45is so thick a guy bobs around like a cork. What's the funnest swimming?
- 9:48If you can't drown, you're a weird one at times. Hurry up
- 9:52and crawl into that suit. Okay, okay, she on? The walls
- 9:58are short thin in these bad house. Well, people with secret shouldn't live
- 10:01in bathhouses, that's all. Snap it up, Give me a chance,
- 10:03would I telling your food dangerous? Quiet? Mark, don't scream at me,
- 10:09Gorman, I'm right. I was like, let's hit the rest to
- 10:11get out of you. What is right you hear that voice? Which one
- 10:15Gorman, the man who helped himself to fifty thousand dollars in the alley behind
- 10:18Joe Bell Saloon. Back in here, close quickly, We've got to tail
- 10:20him. I begin to feel like Gipsy rose Lee playing at double Mattinee.
- 10:33Let's speed it up a little. Mark Gorman seems to be developing a left
- 10:37foot on that accelerator. He asked me, he knows where after him.
- 10:41We should have taken out a license number, just in the case. On't
- 10:46worry, I've got the number. SI me. The last curve, tend
- 10:50a straight away. Yeah, I tell you a nice stretch. Ah,
- 10:54don't we up to sign? Yes? But no car stop? Holy h
- 11:01what could they have gun? Must have driven in some side road. We
- 11:05missed her into a patch of saplings. Buss around. No, no,
- 11:09we'll leave it here and take to the woods on foot. They can work
- 11:11back under cover. Maybe their hide outers near here. The annoy us is
- 11:16going to give him a great chance to take pot shots at us and swear
- 11:20they thought it was a couple of mosses, and make an even better target
- 11:22if we were creeping along in the car stay about five yards deep from the
- 11:26road, and I'll head in a little deeper. Make as little noise as
- 11:28possible. Don't worry. I hate having bullet holes, and stop talking.
- 11:33There's a little radune just in front of me. Run after it, next
- 11:37shot right at last most closer? All right now, they can't spot us
- 11:43in here, would be able to hear any approach they make. Yeah,
- 11:46but how are we going to get out? Why not? They got this
- 11:48pin down? We'll stay here until it gets stark? Hey, race,
- 12:05when are we gonna move? My thoughts as sleep that you don't. Moon
- 12:09is a little too bright. There's a cloud formation though it locks things out
- 12:11for a while. We'll go. They probably left, How is it?
- 12:16I would like to bet you to be right now chewing on t bown steaks
- 12:18while we are hiding from the buggema. That's a bit you'd lose. Take
- 12:22a look up at that hill. Hey, A couple of flashlights are coming
- 12:24down and there's somebody in front of them. Two people guying it. Damn
- 12:30shine the lights right marks girl Sibyl Anderson, and the man is Sonny Krueger.
- 12:37At least he's still alive, Yes, but for how long they're getting
- 12:41ready for some kind of play race present, Teacher, don't come any closer.
- 12:48I'm gonna give you a chance to get out of here in a light.
- 12:52Start playing games for them. Going isn't race? You want krogering this
- 12:56staying to stay alive? Get lost? Are we unload on money? Right?
- 13:01Yes, Simil, I don't think they'll harmless if you go. Don't
- 13:03kill us a good dog, you have no right to risk our lives.
- 13:07Race, go away, go away, all right, Kruger, don't get
- 13:09hysterical. We'll go your car. There's only thirty feet behind you on the
- 13:13road. They moved it down from where you left it. All right,
- 13:16run forward, Mark? Right? Does the roads? Try ahead? Yeah,
- 13:20and there's the car. Start it up and go down the road away.
- 13:24Then we can turn around and come back. Stop on the far side
- 13:30of this curve round this Hill's a lot step of going down and what's coming
- 13:35up? All right? Slow down? Right? I said, slow down?
- 13:37Holy? What is it? Mark? She won't stop racing. They
- 13:41must have slaught the brake rods almost tipped over the mark. You're telling me,
- 13:46are you gonna make this next curve? Race? All right? Mark,
- 13:48we'll have to jump forward, Go ahead, happy landing. We will
- 14:05return to the adventures of Frank Race in just about one minute. And now
- 14:16back to the adventures of Frank Race. Jumping from a car moving at ninety
- 14:28miles per hour over winding mountain road is not the sort of sport I'd recommend,
- 14:33at least not this side of paradise. And speaking of paradise, I
- 14:37wasn't sure which side of it I was on when I started to come to
- 14:41The lady was dressed in light feeling better. Mister Race, Oh am,
- 14:48I where I think I am? You're in the emergency ward of the Mormon
- 14:50Hospital, Mark Donovans. He'll right, yes, yes, As a matter
- 14:54of fact, he's waiting outside. How long have I been out? Four
- 14:58days? Wh All right now? And you can have visitors if you want.
- 15:01I'll take them, and a good strong cup of coffee for a chaser.
- 15:03You don't need any stimulant now, but I'll bring you some water and
- 15:07I'll send mister donathan An. You can go in there, g Race,
- 15:16Why don't you stop trying to prove that your head's as hot as mine.
- 15:18I'll bet there's a hole in the road where you hit it. Marcus Well
- 15:22I've been busy while you've been gold breaking. Here said well, Anderson is
- 15:26back in circulation, and Sonny Krueger is on a loose tool, which means
- 15:28I've been out too long. Garman and Bergie must have pushed the last of
- 15:33the hot money. I went back up into the hills to see if I
- 15:35could find a hideout, but there wasn't anything. You know something. It
- 15:39was pretty lucky to be picked up after they crash. Who founders a couple
- 15:43of guys in the forest patrol. There's a thing up there called a ski
- 15:46lift. It's a bunch of chairs hanging from some kind of telephone poles or
- 15:50something. There's no snow. Why would they be up there. Some kids
- 15:54must have got it started and somebody reported so these guys were going up to
- 15:56stop at the pomas. Here's some water the thanks. Would you like a
- 16:02glass? Mister Donovan? There? You sure it wouldn't be too strong for
- 16:04me? If you'll have to get used to our ways, mister Donovan,
- 16:08Maybe there's something to him at that. I never saw such healthy people in
- 16:11all my life. You don't race. Even when I feel good, I
- 16:15look at them and they make me think I must be sick, mister Race.
- 16:18The doctor says, you'll be able to leave in the morning. Fine,
- 16:21I'll be ready. Nice. There's a big dance here is Saturday.
- 16:26Nice. There's one every Saturday night, mister Donovan. If you're really stuck
- 16:32for a date, I'm not doing anything shadow. No matter what the town,
- 16:44there's always some place on the outskirts that the local citizens would rather forget.
- 16:48In Salt Lake City was no exception. When I left the hospital,
- 16:52Mark and I drove to the place, a bottle carrying dive on Route ninety
- 16:55one known as the Sinner's Layer only cow. Why did you want to count
- 17:00the st joint for arrest? Gorman and Burkie are hardly the time to give
- 17:04up their night life, and they'd find Mormon amusements too conservative. You know,
- 17:07well, how do you know they haven't blonde? Tom? It's set,
- 17:11drog are free. I don't think the money's all gone. Not enough's
- 17:14been picked up. I check with Benton. Only twenty one thousand has turned
- 17:18up. You know something, we still haven't gotten a good look at Corman's
- 17:22fist. How are we going to norm? It's a case of ears instead
- 17:25of eyes. Keep yours open and tab that voice. If you can fift
- 17:27around a little, all right, But there suppose he spots us foist.
- 17:33He's never seen us too clearly either. They've got as much of an edge
- 17:36as he has. Okay, quite same, I'll give you a nine.
- 17:41Eavesdropping has never been one of my favorite cost tiers, and the patrons of
- 17:45the Sinner's Layer didn't favorite either. There were faces I've seen before, migratory
- 17:51faces that turn up here, and they are around the country, small time
- 17:55crooks running away from the laws of one state or another, moving from town
- 17:59to town, never staying too long in any one's spot. But at the
- 18:03back of the place, near a booth, I caught the tones of a
- 18:07voice. I knew it wasn't Gorman. It was Sybil Anderson. Are you
- 18:14safe now, Sonny? Are you sure? Yes? I'm out of it.
- 18:17They won't bother me anymore. Hello, Hello, Race, all Race,
- 18:22Race, You're all right. I'm looking for Gorman and Burkie. You
- 18:26know where they might be, Krueger, probably thousands of miles from here by.
- 18:29Now, might as well pack up and go home. Thanks for the
- 18:33advice. I think I'll stick Mark, and I meant to come back after
- 18:36you. The other night, but we had an accident. I was frightened
- 18:41for you. Race, tell me something, Sibil. All they happen to
- 18:44pick you up? Oh that was my fault. Race. I thought I
- 18:47could get away from them. I set the note out to Sibil and asked
- 18:49her to meet me with a car. Man I bribe devil crossed me.
- 18:52He delivered the note and I picked her up. I don't think it's smart
- 18:56for you to be hanging out in a place like this, Sonny. He's
- 18:59right, Sonny, you ought to go back to town. I'll stay with
- 19:02Race and he can drive me in. God, do you want to stay
- 19:06with him? The time has passed when I have to explain things to you,
- 19:08Sonny. Remember all right, that's the way you wanted. Call you
- 19:14tomorrow. Good Bye, Race, goodbye. Well we're a lone Race,
- 19:22but in the middle of a crowd, as usual, we could go outside.
- 19:26There's a moon next. We didn't speak, but when we got outside,
- 19:38I held my arms open for her, and she came to me.
- 19:42She was smaller and softer than she looked, with a fire in her eyes,
- 19:47and her voice were even more evident with her eyes closed and her lips
- 19:51smothered I wanted to do that when I was eighteen. Race, good night,
- 19:56my coming out party. I'm glad we waited. You learned a lot,
- 20:00yes, including how to make money. Will they tell me about him?
- 20:07What do you mean who was behind the kidnapping of Krueger? I don't
- 20:12know, Grace. You don't think You've made a lot of statements. You
- 20:15haven't explained. I've been doing a series of articles on Mormon culture. I've
- 20:22been working Race, That's what I meant. What was that shot from the
- 20:26club? Come on, Grace, why here? Come on a point Esparana.
- 20:30It took a shot him. He's scramming a car. You know what
- 20:32they look like? Now, I'll never forget hit the highway, baby,
- 20:33we can catch him. Race, Frace, be careful. There's a car
- 20:44up ahead. It must be there. He didn't have time to work over
- 20:47the bright honness. He that's slowing down. Yeah, well, let's not
- 20:49figure. I'm giving up to waste. They made business? Well? Where
- 20:52armed too? This time? Coming up to him? Keep blowing over the
- 20:56week boy, hit, something's going up the raw evil mark. You gotta
- 21:02tie us hold, Oh, brother, I was afraid I was gonna have
- 21:07that jump again. Well, we've lost him, but we got a busy
- 21:10night ahead of us. Turn around and go back to the Sinner's layer.
- 21:11One of them is wounded. You need treatment. They won't dare go to
- 21:15a hospital or a doctor. Maybe we can pick up the name of somebody
- 21:18who specializes in the treatment of illegal wounds. Yes, what do you want?
- 21:33A friend of mine was brought in here suffering from a gunshot wound.
- 21:37I want to see him. I don't know what you're talking about. Look,
- 21:41he's hot. I've got to get him out of town. Stop stolen.
- 21:44He come in, he's in here, get him right of here fast
- 21:49to be tired? What happened brought him here? He couldn't wait? Hello
- 21:56Gorman? Or is it Burkey? When you're right the first time? Race
- 22:02is scrman. This is the end of the road. Boy, Yeah,
- 22:06yeah, I know it. Who you want? Who's the head man?
- 22:11What's in it for me? If I spilled? I can't promise you anything.
- 22:15You know that? Well it might go easier if I could say you
- 22:18were cooperative? All right? Held gamble. The whole snatch was engineered.
- 22:37Race, Would you please tell me what we're checking all these motels for?
- 22:41Sonny Kruger's car. He must be staying at one of them. Isn't registered
- 22:44at any hotels. Hey, look beside that cabin, yellow convoidable monogram.
- 22:51That's it. W K. Walter Cruger. Come on, Oh what do
- 22:52you want with him? I just want to ask him a question? Yes,
- 23:03oh, oh, it's your race. Come in, I want to
- 23:07ask you something, sunny. Where were you at one? I am?
- 23:12Why? Because somebody shot one of your captor's gorman while I was talking to
- 23:18him. Well, I was with an old friend of my father's, Joseph
- 23:21Saunders. Will he swear to that? And is his word any good?
- 23:26He's a Mormon and very highly respected. How did you spend the evening playing
- 23:30chess at his house? Matter of fact, we stop it exactly when I
- 23:33am and he made some coffee and we talked for a while. Mind if
- 23:37I call him and check on it, I don't think it would do any
- 23:41good. He just died a few minutes ago. Hot attack. I heard
- 23:45the report while I was listening to the radio race. Why are you asking
- 23:56me all these questions because you know more than you've been telling me. Was
- 24:00Sonny in some kind of trouble? How would I know? You do know
- 24:06Sonny doesn't inherit his full fortune until he's thirty five, and his allowance from
- 24:10his father's will wasn't enough for him. If you got married, your father
- 24:14was going to advance him some money, wasn't he. Then your father went
- 24:17broke and the engagement was called off. You got a crystal ball race.
- 24:19I checked on Gorman and Burkey. Their regular racket is a floating dice game.
- 24:25What does that prove? I think that Sonny owed them money he couldn't
- 24:29pay, and they were pressuring him, and I think he whipped up this
- 24:30deal himself to pay them off and get himself some cash on the side.
- 24:34Gorman and Burkey and loaded their money. But Sonny has the rest. Find
- 24:38it. I will sooner or later. Ryce Sonny is gone. I went
- 24:45back to check on him. He's gone. We're going too. I got
- 24:48the pieces. Now we're going to pick Sonny up. Do you mean you
- 24:49know where he is? He's gone after the rest of the cash, and
- 24:52all you have to do, race is find out where it is. I
- 24:55know where it is. It's in the hills, someplace near the ski lift
- 24:57to scale lift. That's right, Mark Skeel. If that was running without
- 25:00me, Snow. Come on, baby, this is the payoff, all
- 25:12right, Mark, there's the cabin. He must be in there. We
- 25:15go into that clearer, and he's going to start blessed. We don't have
- 25:17to go in Sunny. Come on out, come and get me a race.
- 25:23I can do it from here. It's autumn. Boy. If I
- 25:26fire this brush, you're finished. Got a point? Raise? Put your
- 25:30hands up and come on, got me a raise? Looks that way?
- 25:42Haven't you forgotten Berkie? He's right behind you with a gun. Nice going,
- 25:51Mark, it's nothing really, Well, that's my last trump race.
- 25:57Looks like you win. I should get out of prison, just in time
- 26:00to collect my inheritance. You're not getting out of Sunny. You murdered Gorman,
- 26:07but brace I told you about my alibi. I think it will hold
- 26:11that. Maybe Berkey shot Gorman. No, Sunny, you did it.
- 26:15You shouldn't have used a dead Mormon for your story. There was a hole
- 26:19in it. What do you mean you said you stopped your chess game at
- 26:22one am and your Mormon host made some coffee. Good Mormons don't drink coffee,
- 26:27Sunny. It's banned. It's considered a stimulant. Should have learned a
- 26:32little bit about the customs of the country. But I tell you it,
- 26:33don't tell me. Tell a Mormon jury, sunny. I think that imaginary
- 26:38cup of coffee may be expensive. It's going to cost you your life.
- 26:57The Adventures of Frank Ray, starring Pauled above with Tony Barrett as Mark Donovan
- 27:03comes to you from Hollywood. Others heard in tonight's cast were williams Herbert Inga
- 27:07Yolas Bert Holland, William Johnstone, and Michael Anne Barrett. This series is
- 27:12written and directed by Buckley Angel and Joel Murcott. The music is composed and
- 27:17played by Ivan Ditmar. Be sure to be with us again this time next
- 27:21week for another dramatic chapter in the Adventures of Frank Ray. Michael Roy speaking.
- 27:26This is a Bruce El's production. Welcome back. Well. The verbal
- 28:08cloth, I think is definitely pretty weak, and this is a pretty good
- 28:11illustration of it, because you know, he can go into you know,
- 28:21you can go into court and say no, no, I didn't say you
- 28:23know, I didn't say he served me coffee. You can't prove I citied
- 28:29at mccoffee. Always somewhat dubious. This is kind of interesting for this late
- 28:37forties look at popular portrayal of Utah and I particularly Mormonism in the nineteen forties.
- 28:49I'm certain that the particular emphasis of this episode wasn't necessarily the one that
- 28:55Assault Lake City Chamber of Commerce would go for. And I do know we
- 29:00have some listeners out in Utah, so they may or may not, depending
- 29:03on how long they've lived there, be able to speak to the accuracy of
- 29:08what Utah was really like in the nineteen forties, because this episode does kind
- 29:15of have a very interesting emphasis on it. But I'll look forward to listener
- 29:19comments on that. That'll actually do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow
- 29:25with a life in your hands, and in the meantime, you can send
