• 0:34
Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
• 0:36
Speaker 2: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's Talk.
• 0:39
Speaker 4: And I have both of my co hosts in the
• 0:41
Speaker 4: building today, Hollis Lewis and Miss Odie.
• 0:45
  Speaker 5: Hello.
• 0:46
  Speaker 2: Hey, So.
• 0:49
Speaker 4: We just passed Thanksgiving. You know, so happy Thanksgiving. I
• 0:52
Speaker 4: hope everybody had a happy Thanksgiving. But I'm I'm gonna
• 0:58
Speaker 4: I'm gonna open this up because Hollis has brought this up.
• 1:03
Speaker 4: I'm curious now because he brought it up about what's
• 1:06
Speaker 4: your favorite food on Thanksgiving? What is your favorite piece?
• 1:10
Speaker 4: Is it the turkey? Is at the dressing? What is it?
• 1:14
  Speaker 2: Yeah?
• 1:14
Speaker 5: Okay, well mineus the stuffing. But I have a funny
• 1:17
Speaker 5: story about the stuffing this year. So my husband and
• 1:20
Speaker 5: I decided we you know, a lot of his family
• 1:22
Speaker 5: and my family were not available for Thanksgiving, so we
• 1:25
Speaker 5: decided just to stay at home and cook ourselves.
• 1:27
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 1:27
Speaker 5: So we had turkey, breast, we had you know all that,
• 1:31
Speaker 5: We had macaroni and cheese, We had all everything set
• 1:34
Speaker 5: up ready to ready to go, put the turkey in,
• 1:36
Speaker 5: got everything cooked, sat down to eat, and Jerry goes,
• 1:39
Speaker 5: we forgot stuffing. And that's my favorite thing.
• 1:44
Speaker 2: Do you homemake the stuffing or yeah?
• 1:46
Speaker 5: We had no No, it was home. We had the breadcrumbs,
• 1:49
Speaker 5: we had the celery, we had everything, and we just forgot.
• 1:53
Speaker 5: And so it was a stuffing less Thanksgiving for me,
• 1:56
Speaker 5: and that's my favorite. Well, it was still good.
• 1:59
Speaker 6: I like this stuff into Traditionally I liked turkey. But
• 2:04
Speaker 6: I think now and again, is this a Thanksgiving food?
• 2:08
Speaker 6: Deviled eggs because you get them all the time, Like
• 2:11
Speaker 6: maybe it's not a Thanksgiving food. It's definitely a holiday food.
• 2:14
Speaker 6: But yeah, it would definitely be doubled eggs for me,
• 2:17
Speaker 6: because I just you don't eat them all the time.
• 2:19
Speaker 4: That's strange to me. Of all the all the good food,
• 2:24
Speaker 4: you could go with the devil eggs.
• 2:26
Speaker 6: I mean, because you gotta take you I mean it
• 2:27
Speaker 6: would like I would say, maybe like a pie because
• 2:30
Speaker 6: I don't eat pie regularly, or a stuffing, you know
• 2:33
Speaker 6: what I mean. You think you eat ham, your ham sandwich,
• 2:35
Speaker 6: turkey sandwich, you eat that kind of regular mac and
• 2:37
Speaker 6: cheese is something that on the menu were throughout the year.
• 2:40
Speaker 6: But you know, deviled eggs is not something you know
• 2:42
Speaker 6: that's like once or twice a year, maybe three times
• 2:45
  Speaker 6: double eggs.
• 2:46
Speaker 4: I'm gonna I'm gonna go. I'm gonna go actually with
• 2:48
Speaker 4: the turkey. Turkey, like I actually like the turkey. I love,
• 2:52
Speaker 4: I love the stuffing, right, but I you know, because
• 2:57
Speaker 4: you don't eat turkey a lot, you know, lot of
• 3:00
Speaker 4: people don't cook it on a regular basis, and so
• 3:03
Speaker 4: it is one of those.
• 3:07
Speaker 5: Get like lunch meat.
• 3:08
Speaker 2: Are you white meat? Dark meat?
• 3:10
  Speaker 4: Uh?
• 3:11
  Speaker 2: Dark meat?
• 3:11
Speaker 4: But I'm I'm it's easy for me to to eat
• 3:15
Speaker 4: the white meat as well.
• 3:17
Speaker 2: I've just gotten you.
• 3:18
Speaker 4: I just like turkey now, It's just it don't make
• 3:20
Speaker 4: any difference where I cut it from.
• 3:23
Speaker 6: I just want, Yeah, I love a turkey, right at
• 3:26
Speaker 6: least least favorite. Well, it will move on. You don't
• 3:30
Speaker 6: have to rush off of it for me.
• 3:32
Speaker 4: You should already know what what my worst one is
• 3:35
Speaker 4: a sweet potatoes. Yo, you know what type of sweet potato,
• 3:41
Speaker 4: because that's my worst one too.
• 3:43
  Speaker 2: I don't even care what kind of sweet. I don't
• 3:47
Speaker 2: even know what the difference in sweet potatoes are. They're orange.
• 3:52
  Speaker 5: Potato.
• 3:53
Speaker 6: My thing is like, I like sweet potatoes, but I
• 3:56
Speaker 6: don't like sweet potatoes sweet. So I don't like candy yam.
• 4:00
Speaker 6: You know how they do it with marshmallows and it's disgusting.
• 4:04
Speaker 2: It's just not good.
• 4:05
Speaker 6: Like I like a sweet potato like, I'll do it
• 4:07
Speaker 6: like butter like you do, like a baked like I
• 4:09
Speaker 6: like its savory but not sweet.
• 4:12
Speaker 2: So I agree with you.
• 4:13
Speaker 5: So okay. So mine is cranberry sauce. I'm just not
• 4:18
  Speaker 5: a fan.
• 4:18
Speaker 2: That's my second one.
• 4:19
Speaker 5: Yeah yeah, especially when you when it comes to the
• 4:22
Speaker 5: table shape like the can.
• 4:23
Speaker 2: You know, cranberry sauce is underrated. It's so good. It's
• 4:28
  Speaker 2: so good.
• 4:29
Speaker 4: I'm like, like, when you look at it, like when
• 4:32
Speaker 4: you take granberry something, will you take it out?
• 4:36
Speaker 2: It's good. I don't even really do yellow.
• 4:41
Speaker 4: There's just a look in the texture of it that
• 4:43
Speaker 4: just I'm it just doesn't do me well well. So
• 4:50
Speaker 4: I wanted to make sure we got that out because
• 4:52
Speaker 4: you know, that's part of some of that. There's some
• 4:54
Speaker 4: people back, some of some of the listeners are probably
• 4:56
Speaker 4: like sitting there having that conversation, what is it that
• 4:59
  Speaker 4: I don't like?
• 5:00
Speaker 2: You know? All right, So let's go.
• 5:03
Speaker 4: Back and let's ask the question, and Marshall head coaches
• 5:10
Speaker 4: New Ones, what do you think?
• 5:13
Speaker 6: I think the question that we were was this successful season?
• 5:17
Speaker 6: Where was this a step in the right direction for
• 5:19
Speaker 6: each program? And I think and it could be neutral
• 5:24
Speaker 6: as well. I think Marshall, for me, they definitely took
• 5:27
Speaker 6: a step in the right direction considering everything that happened
• 5:31
Speaker 6: last year. And we'll talk about probably Old miss maybe
• 5:34
Speaker 6: about to experience that same thing. But Marshall to me,
• 5:39
Speaker 6: because are they I believe they're both eligible, they're not.
• 5:45
Speaker 6: They both lost, but I think it was a step
• 5:48
Speaker 6: in the right direction. Now, whether you consider that a
• 5:51
Speaker 6: success or not, I guess that would be on you.
• 5:53
Speaker 6: But I think Marshall was good.
• 5:55
  Speaker 2: W v U kind of same thing.
• 5:57
Speaker 6: I mean they lost a lot of players, Rich Rod's back,
• 6:01
Speaker 6: so I think both programs are taking steps in the
• 6:03
  Speaker 6: right direction.
• 6:04
Speaker 2: I mean WVU had a run mid season.
• 6:07
Speaker 4: So I and before you jump in, yeah, go ahead,
• 6:10
Speaker 4: to hollis that run? To me, I think it's important
• 6:17
Speaker 4: because that shows where you can be. Now you can say, well,
• 6:22
Speaker 4: who are the teams that they made the run on.
• 6:24
Speaker 2: I don't think that matters at this point.
• 6:27
Speaker 4: I think all that really matters now is the is
• 6:29
Speaker 4: the players that are playing for this new coach. They
• 6:33
Speaker 4: have confidence, and the coach has something to go back
• 6:36
Speaker 4: and say, hey, see this run. We can do this
• 6:39
Speaker 4: all season long. If we do this, this and that.
• 6:43
Speaker 4: All we got to do is just get better at
• 6:44
Speaker 4: these things. Because you know how it is. You can
• 6:47
Speaker 4: pick out something and say this is why this game
• 6:49
  Speaker 4: went that way.
• 6:50
Speaker 2: We can change that and we can get that to
• 6:53
  Speaker 2: a win.
• 6:54
  Speaker 5: So I mean, I don't challenge that at all. I
• 6:57
Speaker 5: think I think you're absolutely correct. And that run and included,
• 7:00
Speaker 5: you know that that big win at Houston when Euston
• 7:03
Speaker 5: was ranked. Yeah, and then they came home and beat Colorado,
• 7:05
Speaker 5: So those were two you know, and and of course
• 7:08
Speaker 5: the Pitt Pitt bick. So those were three you know,
• 7:11
Speaker 5: teams that that they really needed to beat in order
• 7:15
Speaker 5: to keep the momentum going. Unfortunately, I think what happened
• 7:19
Speaker 5: with WU at the end is they knew that last
• 7:22
Speaker 5: game really was meaningless, and so Texas Tech just rolled
• 7:25
Speaker 5: in and rolled the rolled the team. Basically, you know
• 7:29
Speaker 5: that that was just an ugly loss on Saturday. But
• 7:33
Speaker 5: I think with Marshall, I don't know that the loss
• 7:36
Speaker 5: for Marshall on Saturday was not as I mean, it's
• 7:41
Speaker 5: still hurt because you knew if they won that game
• 7:43
Speaker 5: that they would be Bowl eligible, and you and you
• 7:46
Speaker 5: hope that they would they would get to that point.
• 7:48
Speaker 5: But I think it was a closer game and people
• 7:51
Speaker 5: felt like it gave him some hope, whereas and I'm
• 7:55
Speaker 5: not saying people aren't hopeful about the Mountaineers, but I
• 7:57
Speaker 5: just think that last loss of Texas Tech was ugly.
• 8:00
Speaker 6: Yeah, and I would say going back to Marshall, and
• 8:02
Speaker 6: you can also maybe make the argument that Marshall underachieved.
• 8:06
Speaker 6: I mean, they should have beat they should have beat Ull.
• 8:10
Speaker 6: That was a game they should have won. It was
• 8:11
Speaker 6: another I think it was a coastal Carolina. I believe
• 8:14
Speaker 6: that that was a tighter game than what they what
• 8:17
Speaker 6: it should have been. So they they were probably in
• 8:20
Speaker 6: about two or three games that they should have won
• 8:24
Speaker 6: and they could have very well been Bowl eligible. I
• 8:27
Speaker 6: think with w VU and again I know, like you know,
• 8:31
Speaker 6: we have that's sort of our here in West Virginia,
• 8:34
Speaker 6: our rabbit fan base. You know, it turns towards WVU.
• 8:38
Speaker 6: But I think what people with WU fans aren't going
• 8:40
Speaker 6: to have to consider is that we're now a men major.
• 8:44
Speaker 6: If you think about in terms of what's going on
• 8:47
Speaker 6: with n I, L Transfer Reporter blah blah blah blah blah,
• 8:51
Speaker 6: you know, you're gonna have your big dogs like you know,
• 8:53
Speaker 6: LSU and Georgia and and and you know in Texas
• 8:58
Speaker 6: and those programs like that. W WVU simply does not
• 9:03
Speaker 6: have the resources to compete with that. So they're going
• 9:06
Speaker 6: to have to like think about this in a different way,
• 9:09
Speaker 6: and expectations, to me are going to have to be
• 9:11
Speaker 6: tempered a little bit, so you're not Again, if we
• 9:15
Speaker 6: can get to a playoff run, we can get that scenario, good.
• 9:19
Speaker 6: I think that's that's going to be an ultimate success.
• 9:22
Speaker 6: But until we can start to match up some of
• 9:24
Speaker 6: those resources or at least get some continuity among the
• 9:28
Speaker 6: players in the program, it's going to be tough sledding.
• 9:30
Speaker 4: I think to your point, and adding a little bit
• 9:34
Speaker 4: to it, when you start looking at WU, and you
• 9:37
Speaker 4: start looking at Marshall, when you start looking at your
• 9:40
Speaker 4: top players, those top players are not satisfied. They don't
• 9:46
  Speaker 4: they're not looking for where we're going. They're looking They're
• 9:54
Speaker 4: looking for where can I go and where can I
• 9:57
Speaker 4: get paid? And so the problem with WU and Marshall
• 10:03
Speaker 4: and being the star on that team you as a coach,
• 10:08
Speaker 4: I'm thinking, the very first thing you have to do
• 10:11
Speaker 4: is you're gonna have to find the money to pay
• 10:13
Speaker 4: that guy to do my guy.
• 10:16
  Speaker 2: I gotta find a.
• 10:17
Speaker 4: Way to pay him, him and you and my top
• 10:21
Speaker 4: three or four guys.
• 10:22
Speaker 2: I got to make sure I got money.
• 10:24
Speaker 6: Lost our quarterback, mit, you know, a starting quarterback in lost,
• 10:28
Speaker 6: and you know, and I would imagine those guys who
• 10:30
Speaker 6: maybe get some All Conference recognitions, maybe if we can
• 10:33
Speaker 6: get a one or two on the All American team,
• 10:35
Speaker 6: them dudes are going to be gone.
• 10:37
  Speaker 2: Fortunately.
• 10:38
Speaker 5: Yes, And that's what I was going to say to
• 10:40
Speaker 5: speak to your point about expectations, Hollis, I feel like
• 10:43
Speaker 5: what's going to happen is every once in a while,
• 10:46
Speaker 5: I think WU may get a shot at at at
• 10:50
Speaker 5: maybe you know, the playoff that but but it's going
• 10:53
Speaker 5: to be short lived because what will happen, is what
• 10:55
Speaker 5: you guys are saying, And it's totally true. These bigger
• 10:59
Speaker 5: schools with more money and more more resources and better
• 11:02
Speaker 5: facilities are going to swoop in and get those good
• 11:04
Speaker 5: players off of that team. So excuse me, if that
• 11:08
Speaker 5: team would happen to be able to make it to
• 11:11
  Speaker 5: a playoff and maybe make a little run. I don't
• 11:14
Speaker 5: even know if we could make it to a national championship,
• 11:16
Speaker 5: but if they would make a run, it will be
• 11:18
  Speaker 5: short lived.
• 11:18
Speaker 6: So let me ask you this and we can move
• 11:21
Speaker 6: to the conference championships schedule this weekend. What's the answer?
• 11:26
Speaker 6: What's the answer? And again I'm gonna kind of answer
• 11:29
Speaker 6: my own questions. I'll let you guys answer. I think
• 11:32
Speaker 6: for me, the answer is like, we have to get
• 11:35
  Speaker 6: more homegrown talent.
• 11:37
  Speaker 2: Right.
• 11:38
Speaker 6: I know we're in a small state, and again even
• 11:40
Speaker 6: that in and of itself is difficult to compete against
• 11:45
Speaker 6: other you know, states who are going to get the
• 11:46
Speaker 6: bulk of their talent and going to like an Alabama
• 11:49
Speaker 6: or LSU or what have you. But we're gonna have
• 11:51
Speaker 6: to get those kids. And if the kids even aren't
• 11:55
Speaker 6: ready coming out of high school, I think it's going
• 11:58
Speaker 6: to have to be some sort of network will we
• 12:00
Speaker 6: work with like the UC's, the States, the Concords, the Fairmonts.
• 12:05
Speaker 6: Get those kids ready on that level, let them show improved,
• 12:07
Speaker 6: and then possibly filtering into the program like a w
• 12:11
Speaker 6: v U or Marshall. But we're gonna really really have
• 12:14
Speaker 6: to because and the reason I say that is because
• 12:17
Speaker 6: those are the guys who are gonna be dedicated to
• 12:19
Speaker 6: the program outside of n I.
• 12:21
Speaker 4: L see and I man, I you are spot on,
• 12:28
  Speaker 4: But I don't think the players are spot I don't
• 12:31
Speaker 4: think that they buy you anything.
• 12:32
  Speaker 2: They don't know. I don't know.
• 12:35
Speaker 4: I'm thinking the homegrown guys don't care about Marshall or WVU.
• 12:40
Speaker 4: That might be where I start at or stayed or
• 12:44
Speaker 4: UC or whoever. This is where I'm starting. But I'm
• 12:48
Speaker 4: I'm not interested in anybody other than if you give
• 12:52
Speaker 4: me five dollars and lista's gonna get me teens. I'm out, man,
• 12:57
  Speaker 4: I think.
• 12:58
Speaker 2: You're gonna ask. I think you're gonna have have some
• 13:00
  Speaker 2: loyalty there.
• 13:02
Speaker 5: I mean that's the only way or something like that,
• 13:05
Speaker 5: Like if your dad went to WU, Yeah, yeah, that
• 13:09
Speaker 5: might be that would make a difference.
• 13:10
Speaker 4: I think that that's possibly the only scenario scenario that
• 13:16
Speaker 4: can keep a kid there because as soon as the
• 13:21
Speaker 4: money comes. So let's say you you got a scholarship
• 13:25
Speaker 4: to WU scholarship at Marshall, you you you're making let's
• 13:30
Speaker 4: just say they're giving your twenty thousand dollars.
• 13:32
Speaker 6: But I'm saying, you got to add that you've been
• 13:35
Speaker 6: a fan of maybe that program your entire life. Your
• 13:38
Speaker 6: your dad or your mom went to the school, and
• 13:40
Speaker 6: you grew up going to the games. So I think
• 13:43
Speaker 6: that could be somewhat of an answer.
• 13:45
  Speaker 4: I think that I think there's a lot of I
• 13:47
  Speaker 4: think there's a lot of conversation. There's a lot of
• 13:51
Speaker 4: conversation about how that works. Yeah, but I seriously believe
• 13:59
Speaker 4: that it's going to be a huge, huge, huge challenge
• 14:05
Speaker 4: to keep players when there's money out there to be made,
• 14:11
Speaker 4: because I'm going because now, let's just how many high
• 14:16
Speaker 4: school athletes are out there who are thinking about money
• 14:22
Speaker 4: all of the means they're not worried about they're not
• 14:27
Speaker 4: worried about going to Marshall w w U UC.
• 14:31
Speaker 6: So you're saying, like loyalty in the school is kind
• 14:33
Speaker 6: of irrelevant. It's about where I can go get paid.
• 14:36
Speaker 4: Because the loyalty is only going to get there when
• 14:39
Speaker 4: you you're not sitting back at high school now in
• 14:44
Speaker 4: the tenth grade and start thinking like, Okay, I want
• 14:48
Speaker 4: to go to Marshall.
• 14:49
Speaker 2: You know. That's my that's my thing. I want to
• 14:51
Speaker 2: go to Marshall. And because of that, I'm so you're
• 14:57
  Speaker 2: saying kids aren't doing that, You don't. I think I
• 15:01
Speaker 2: think they might be.
• 15:03
Speaker 4: But the problem with that is, I'm only giving you
• 15:08
Speaker 4: a certain amount of money. So as soon as Lisa
• 15:10
Speaker 4: comes in, because as soon as Lisa starts talking to
• 15:14
Speaker 4: me and saying, hey, Hollis, you know, not only are
• 15:18
Speaker 4: we going to start you, we're going to start you
• 15:21
Speaker 4: off paying you this amount of money, where are you going?
• 15:25
Speaker 5: But I think the schools are trying to adopt that
• 15:28
Speaker 5: maybe home grown type of philosophy. Look at their hires,
• 15:31
Speaker 5: their coaches. They know the only chance they have to
• 15:34
Speaker 5: compete in this collegiate world that we're in is to
• 15:37
Speaker 5: have some home ties. And that's why they hired rich
• 15:39
Speaker 5: Rod at WU. He's an alumni. And that's why they
• 15:42
Speaker 5: got Tony Gibson at Marshall's because he's from you know,
• 15:45
Speaker 5: West Virginia and attended Marshall. So you know, I think
• 15:49
Speaker 5: that they have to give it a valiant effort.
• 15:52
Speaker 6: Yeah, that's what I guess, because that's their only chance
• 15:55
  Speaker 6: in a state like y'ad.
• 15:57
Speaker 2: I think that's the only chance.
• 15:58
Speaker 6: And I think the good thing about what we have
• 16:00
Speaker 6: going is that we have a collegiate system as far
• 16:04
Speaker 6: as the D two system, we have a strong D
• 16:06
Speaker 6: two system here in West Virginia, unlike a lot of
• 16:09
Speaker 6: other states, like if you look at state like Florida,
• 16:11
Speaker 6: they don't necessarily have like D two schools, although they
• 16:13
Speaker 6: have a bunch of other schools. But we could actually
• 16:16
Speaker 6: use that D two systems and all the schools that
• 16:18
Speaker 6: we have to build almost like a farm system.
• 16:21
Speaker 2: So it's the kid.
• 16:22
Speaker 6: He was the Kennedy Award winner Collins from Princeton receiver.
• 16:26
Speaker 6: He was at WVU, went back, went to Concord, was
• 16:30
Speaker 6: basically in the nation and receiving at one point. He's
• 16:33
Speaker 6: back in the transfer portal and he and he stated
• 16:36
Speaker 6: he's not unopposed to going back to WVU. So I
• 16:40
Speaker 6: think if we could be creative and use kind of
• 16:43
Speaker 6: what we have, we could build some loyalty. Again, I'm
• 16:46
Speaker 6: not saying I can't discount anything you saying you exact
• 16:50
Speaker 6: and correct that if the money's involved, they get blinded
• 16:54
Speaker 6: by that and all that. Look, but it's not going
• 16:58
Speaker 6: to fix. But I think it could be somewhat of
• 17:00
Speaker 6: an answer to us. And I think the hell heck,
• 17:03
Speaker 6: w v you and Marshall don't play. Maybe they could
• 17:05
Speaker 6: start working together a little bit on these sort of
• 17:07
Speaker 6: things to build that network.
• 17:09
Speaker 5: I would think, Yeah, I don't know about that.
• 17:12
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't. I don't see that.
• 17:14
  Speaker 4: I don't see that that would I think that's a
• 17:16
Speaker 4: great idea, But I don't see that.
• 17:18
Speaker 2: I don't see that bond. Ever.
• 17:22
Speaker 5: Yeah, I think there's too much bad blood between those
• 17:25
  Speaker 5: I mean especially I just I don't. I don't see
• 17:28
Speaker 5: that happening. But it would be. It would be a
• 17:30
Speaker 5: good idea. Actually, if they could get over there.
• 17:34
Speaker 2: Do you think that those two coaches their friends.
• 17:37
Speaker 4: I was gonna say, yeah, if they could come together,
• 17:41
Speaker 4: I mean, I mean, maybe they do well.
• 17:44
Speaker 6: I mean, just like I think the school presidents. I
• 17:46
Speaker 6: think if you look at President Smith and the new
• 17:48
  Speaker 6: president w v U, I'm looking at it from like
• 17:51
Speaker 6: an administrative level, not the necessary Again, I'm not saying
• 17:55
Speaker 6: that they like work together. As far as trading players
• 17:57
Speaker 6: or anything like that. I'm just saying building that netw
• 18:00
Speaker 6: work to say, hey, how can we make our institutions
• 18:03
Speaker 6: football and athletics better?
• 18:04
Speaker 2: A question to both of you.
• 18:08
Speaker 4: If you had, if you had to try to figure out, like,
• 18:12
Speaker 4: what would it take for Wu and Marshall to recruit
• 18:20
  Speaker 4: Heavenly West Virginia.
• 18:22
Speaker 2: Is it worth their while or is it just not?
• 18:25
Speaker 4: You know, is it you know, can they find enough
• 18:30
Speaker 4: players that they can bring in play maybe as freshmen.
• 18:36
Speaker 2: Or is it just not?
• 18:38
Speaker 6: Are they just not far as freshmen? No, that that's
• 18:41
Speaker 6: not realistic at this point. What I'm what I propose
• 18:44
Speaker 6: early is that if we could figure out a way
• 18:47
Speaker 6: to almost use our D two system as a farm system.
• 18:50
Speaker 6: So they say, I have ten freshmen West Virginia kids
• 18:55
  Speaker 6: who I like, but I don't think they're ready.
• 18:57
Speaker 2: So I'm gonna work with coach Penn. I'm gonna work
• 19:00
  Speaker 2: what you see.
• 19:00
Speaker 6: You go there, spend a year or two there developing,
• 19:04
Speaker 6: get better, show and proved, and then we'll reevaluate you again.
• 19:08
Speaker 6: But I don't think we're going to get like this
• 19:10
Speaker 6: mass influx of West Virginia freshmen.
• 19:13
Speaker 5: I don't think our state's big enough, do you. I mean,
• 19:15
Speaker 5: I don't think we have enough high schools to fill
• 19:19
Speaker 5: that that complete void that they have at both schools.
• 19:22
Speaker 5: As far as players go, well.
• 19:23
Speaker 2: We don't have enough talented players per team. I just
• 19:27
Speaker 2: don't think we have.
• 19:28
Speaker 5: I just don't think we have enough. We don't student athletes. Yeah,
• 19:32
Speaker 5: but and the transfer portal will always be a friend
• 19:35
Speaker 5: for w and Marshall in this day and time. I
• 19:37
Speaker 5: think just to play, you know, be able to bring
• 19:40
Speaker 5: in players that are ready to play immediately, because what's
• 19:43
Speaker 5: going to happen is your better players every year are
• 19:45
Speaker 5: going to be picked up by the bigger schools with
• 19:47
Speaker 5: more money, more opportunity, And then we've got to go
• 19:50
Speaker 5: to the transfer portal in a hurry and fill those
• 19:53
Speaker 5: needs as quickly as possible.
• 19:55
Speaker 6: And I think, like I said, I don't think you know,
• 19:57
Speaker 6: it's just the reality of modern college football. You're not
• 20:00
Speaker 6: like filling teams with a bunch of freshmen no more.
• 20:02
Speaker 6: But I think again, there's a pathway. But before we
• 20:06
Speaker 6: go to break with us, uh, we got the college
• 20:09
Speaker 6: conference championships coming up, so we can just if you
• 20:12
Speaker 6: want to, we can make some little predictions. We got
• 20:15
Speaker 6: the starting out with the American Atlantic athlet excuse me,
• 20:20
Speaker 6: American Athletic Championship. We got North Texas and Tulane. Tulane
• 20:25
Speaker 6: is number twenty four. North Texas is eleven and one,
• 20:29
Speaker 6: led by a quarterback, mind you, who never started, who
• 20:32
Speaker 6: never played in high school, didn't play. He was like
• 20:37
Speaker 6: a third stringer. He's got a minimum time. Those in
• 20:40
Speaker 6: the North Texas and it's like probably maybe gonna get
• 20:43
Speaker 6: drafted in the next year or two, or at least
• 20:45
Speaker 6: have a shot at the league. So who do we
• 20:47
Speaker 6: got there, North Texas Tulane And you said the quarterback
• 20:50
Speaker 6: was where North Texas?
• 20:51
Speaker 2: I'm going North. I'm going to North Texas to I'm
• 20:56
  Speaker 2: all right.
• 20:57
Speaker 6: Big twelve Championship. We got by U number eleven team
• 21:01
Speaker 6: in the nation, Texas Tech, number fifteen team in the nation.
• 21:04
Speaker 2: Big twelve Championship. Texas Tech can't go against Brian you.
• 21:08
Speaker 5: You's got to go with Texas tex.
• 21:09
Speaker 6: Right now, this is gonna be in Well, we'll do this.
• 21:14
Speaker 6: We'll go acc Duke not rated. There's seven and five
• 21:18
Speaker 6: against Virginia, number eighteen, ten and two.
• 21:22
  Speaker 2: We got Virginia.
• 21:23
Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm gonna go with Virginia.
• 21:24
Speaker 2: Virginia. I think I'll take Virginia. Now we're gonna get spicy.
• 21:28
Speaker 6: Got number four Georgia, number ten Alabama SEC Championship.
• 21:34
  Speaker 2: Who we got I'm going, I'm going, I'm gonna I'm
• 21:37
Speaker 2: gonna take a little risky. I'm going Georgia. You going Georgia? Yes?
• 21:41
Speaker 5: And who's Georgia playing again?
• 21:42
  Speaker 2: Alabama?
• 21:44
Speaker 5: I mean, I Georgia is so good every year they
• 21:47
Speaker 5: just find a way to win. I'm gonna go with Georgia.
• 21:49
  Speaker 4: Two.
• 21:49
Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, I thought Alabama should have got beaten
• 21:52
Speaker 6: the Iron Bowl. Arburn gave that game away auburnd. They
• 21:55
Speaker 6: just couldn't hold onto the ball. So I'm gonna go Georgia.
• 21:58
Speaker 6: And then we got probably the the game of the
• 22:00
Speaker 6: week has got the Big Ten Championship. We got number
• 22:04
Speaker 6: one oh State against number two Indiana, who we got
• 22:08
Speaker 6: both undefeated teams twelve and zero.
• 22:11
Speaker 5: These built It pains me to say it, but I
• 22:14
Speaker 5: think I think the Buckeyes will win. I mean, they're
• 22:16
Speaker 5: just they're that good.
• 22:17
Speaker 2: I mean, I gotta go. I kind of gotta go
• 22:20
Speaker 2: there too. He man, I'm going for the upset. I'm going.
• 22:23
  Speaker 5: I mean, I would love I.
• 22:25
Speaker 2: Would love it too.
• 22:27
Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, all right, Well, ladies and gentlemen, we're gonna
• 22:31

Speaker 4: We have a guest that's walked into the studio, so
• 23:38
Speaker 4: we're excited about that. So Hollis is gonna introduce We
• 23:41
Speaker 4: got our resident attorney talk.
• 23:45
Speaker 6: Yeah, we're gonna talk about the Lane Kiffin situation. And uh, well,
• 23:50
Speaker 6: I'll let you lead us off, Coach Lee to what
• 23:52
Speaker 6: are your thoughts on that.
• 23:57
Speaker 4: I feel like at some point we have to be
• 24:00
Speaker 4: able to hold coaches in a space, like if you're
• 24:07
Speaker 4: gonna sign this huge contract right at a school, then
• 24:13
Speaker 4: to me, if it's gonna be guaranteed, then that means
• 24:16
Speaker 4: you have to be You have to give up a guarantee.
• 24:19
Speaker 2: Too, So you need to be able to be If.
• 24:22
Speaker 4: Your contract is one hundred dollars for four years, then
• 24:27
Speaker 4: that's what it is, and you can't you can't get
• 24:31
Speaker 4: out of that without some kind of an issue, some
• 24:37
Speaker 4: kind of is There has to be something that's gonna
• 24:39
Speaker 4: hold you accountable because I signed with you, because you
• 24:43
Speaker 4: came and talked to my mom and dad and sold
• 24:46
Speaker 4: me on all of this great stuff.
• 24:48
Speaker 2: And I come to you and I'm excited.
• 24:51
Speaker 4: About playing for you, even if I'm sitting in the
• 24:54
Speaker 4: vinch the first year, I'm thinking at some point I'm
• 24:55
Speaker 4: gonna be playing and I'm gonna be playing for you,
• 24:59
Speaker 4: and the next thing I know, you're leaving. And again
• 25:03
Speaker 4: you don't, do you. My question is do you owe
• 25:07
Speaker 4: the kids that you recruit? Do you owe them anything?
• 25:12
Speaker 6: So okay, So so again I think I'm pretty emotion
• 25:16
Speaker 6: about this. So I'm gonna let our attorney speak for us,
• 25:19
Speaker 6: give us some logic on this and and tell us
• 25:21
Speaker 6: sort of the ins and out and things that we
• 25:23
Speaker 6: may not be considering before we.
• 25:24
Speaker 2: All and before you say this, if there and is there?
• 25:29
Speaker 4: Whenever you want to answer this, is there a possibility
• 25:32
Speaker 4: that there are contracts that will come up eventually that
• 25:37
Speaker 4: will hold players or coaches to that school so that
• 25:41
  Speaker 4: they don't leave.
• 25:43
Speaker 2: Is that a possibility?
• 25:45
Speaker 8: First of all, thank you all for having me.
• 25:47
Speaker 5: He's right in the hot seat right out of the gate.
• 25:51
Speaker 9: But the reality is, I think the problem that we
• 25:54
Speaker 9: have is being created by the lack of leadership. I
• 26:00
Speaker 9: think the real the problem is that we've had a
• 26:03
Speaker 9: lack of leadership at the nc double A. That that
• 26:05
Speaker 9: that that's the ultimately Yes, yeah, okay, And I say
• 26:09
Speaker 9: that because with due respect, I think if anybody got
• 26:13
Speaker 9: the offer that Lane Kiffin did.
• 26:15
Speaker 8: They would they would let's just call space space yea.
• 26:20
Speaker 6: So it was in the offer ninety one million dollars
• 26:23
Speaker 6: for four or seven years, and I think he got
• 26:27
Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars for nil per year.
• 26:30
Speaker 9: And the twenty five million I think is probably equally
• 26:33
Speaker 9: important to him because that gives him the ability to
• 26:36
Speaker 9: win the national champions.
• 26:38
Speaker 2: And that's twenty five per year, I believe. Yeah, that
• 26:40
  Speaker 2: is correct.
• 26:41
Speaker 9: Well, from what I've read, that is correct. So I
• 26:43
Speaker 9: say that because he's now as a mentor. He went
• 26:48
Speaker 9: into the homes of these student athletes talk to their parents,
• 26:53
Speaker 9: and now he was their mentor, and he has taught them,
• 26:57
Speaker 9: and I mind you, he has taught them that you
• 27:00
Speaker 9: must take the bigger, better deal every time. So why
• 27:04
Speaker 9: should the student athlete be restricted this upcoming year? It's
• 27:08
Speaker 9: January tewod to January sixteenth to enter the transfer portal? Yeah,
• 27:14
Speaker 9: well why can't Why can't the student athlete talk middle
• 27:17
  Speaker 9: of the season.
• 27:17
Speaker 5: Too, That's exactly right.
• 27:19
Speaker 9: You see, if you're gonna do, you're gonna have it,
• 27:21
Speaker 9: You're gonna have a set of rules.
• 27:23
Speaker 8: Then what goes for the goose is good.
• 27:25
  Speaker 2: For the game.
• 27:25
Speaker 6: And see that's my biggest problem. And to your point,
• 27:29
Speaker 6: the NCAA, it should be disbanded. We don't need it anymore.
• 27:33
Speaker 6: It is useless. It is it is a useless organization
• 27:37
Speaker 6: that has failed over and over again to have any
• 27:41
Speaker 6: foresight about what's going on. Because even if you look
• 27:45
Speaker 6: at transfer port, you look at nil ten to fifteen
• 27:48
Speaker 6: years ago, you could have gave players five to ten
• 27:51
Speaker 6: grand a month out of a collective like sharing, like
• 27:55
Speaker 6: far as, like the video games and the merchant and
• 27:57
Speaker 6: all that you could have gave them, and we probably
• 27:59
Speaker 6: wouldn't even be here right now. So my thing is
• 28:03
Speaker 6: again to your point, Attorney Paul, that again it's a
• 28:07
Speaker 6: difficult deal to turn to turn down. But I think
• 28:09
Speaker 6: what has to happen is that we need to move
• 28:12
Speaker 6: the clock. It's insane to me that a school would
• 28:17
Speaker 6: be able to poach a coach prior to the playoffs.
• 28:21
Speaker 6: Old missus going to the college football playoffs and you're
• 28:26
Speaker 6: not going to coach the college for you could hire
• 28:30
Speaker 6: a guy within the same conference, within the same conference,
• 28:36
Speaker 6: you could just post the coach. I mean, this is
• 28:38
Speaker 6: tampering in the NFL. So I think what has to
• 28:40
Speaker 6: happen is that we need to move the season up.
• 28:43
Speaker 6: So the season football season needs to start in July
• 28:47
Speaker 6: and the football in the championship game needs to be
• 28:50
Speaker 6: played January first. So to your point, when we have
• 28:54
Speaker 6: the playoff, when we have the transfer portal window from
• 28:57
Speaker 6: January tewond to January sixteenth, it could start free and clear,
• 29:01
Speaker 6: so that way all the games are done. Because I
• 29:03
Speaker 6: think basketball their transfer portal starts after March madness, Why
• 29:08
Speaker 6: does the transfer portal starting when we're still having games
• 29:11
  Speaker 6: going on?
• 29:12
Speaker 2: It makes no sense.
• 29:13
Speaker 6: So again I would say either the NCAA has to
• 29:17
Speaker 6: get get there together or just get out the way
• 29:22
Speaker 6: and let the coaches and the college presidents in the
• 29:24
  Speaker 6: eighties do this.
• 29:25
Speaker 9: The other thing they could do is push the transfer
• 29:27
Speaker 9: portal back. And I agree with you on the transfer
• 29:30
Speaker 9: portal should not be open when there is a game.
• 29:33
Speaker 2: To be It shouldn't.
• 29:34
Speaker 8: It should And the other thing is what happens if.
• 29:36
Speaker 6: You let me say this though, The problem pushing it
• 29:39
Speaker 6: back is that the semester's starting. So generally college semesters
• 29:43
Speaker 6: are starting around at fifteen fourteen tenth, so between the
• 29:46
Speaker 6: tenth and about the seventeenth their school starting, So.
• 29:51
Speaker 9: Then we need to make an adjustment to have that
• 29:53
Speaker 9: and accommodate that. And by the way, the same thing,
• 29:56
Speaker 9: the same set of rules should apply to college coaches
• 30:00
  Speaker 9: ball coaches.
• 30:00
Speaker 8: It should only open.
• 30:01
Speaker 2: Up after that last.
• 30:05
Speaker 4: Okay, totally good points, and yeah, I agree with the Hollis.
• 30:09
  Speaker 4: And I would say this, I don't know. I can't
• 30:15
Speaker 4: imagine coaching a school supposedly and connected to it because
• 30:23
Speaker 4: I'm connected to it. If I'm coaching it, I would
• 30:26
Speaker 4: like to think that I'm connected to it. I'm connected
• 30:28
Speaker 4: to it to the players. I don't understand how I
• 30:34
Speaker 4: am negotiating a deal somewhere while we're still playing.
• 30:41
Speaker 5: I think he had a history of this though, doesn't he. Yes, yes,
• 30:45
Speaker 5: I mean this isn't surprising behavior from him, I think.
• 30:49
Speaker 5: The only thing that and not to change the subject,
• 30:52
Speaker 5: but I just want to get this out there because
• 30:54
Speaker 5: it just crawls under my skin so much. But his
• 30:57
Speaker 5: victim role he's playing right now that you know, Uh,
• 31:00
Speaker 5: those mean old people at Old Miss won't let me.
• 31:03
Speaker 5: They won't let me keep coaching the Rebels through the playoffs.
• 31:06
Speaker 5: You know, well, you made a choice. You went to
• 31:08
Speaker 5: their rival, you know, I mean exactly, You're either in
• 31:13
Speaker 5: with our team or you're out. And buddy, you you
• 31:16
Speaker 5: signed a contract, you decided your fate, you're done. You're
• 31:19
Speaker 5: not coaching our team in the playoffs. You know, why
• 31:22
Speaker 5: would why would they even consider that?
• 31:25
Speaker 8: In addition, why would you want to keep him there?
• 31:28
Speaker 9: So that because now you know he's got twenty five
• 31:30
Speaker 9: million dollars in then I own money, he's gonna start
• 31:32
Speaker 9: poaching those athletes that he wants.
• 31:35
Speaker 2: And not to say that he can't anyway, but.
• 31:38
Speaker 8: If he's in their ear for the next three weeks.
• 31:40
Speaker 5: Oh, he's gonna take them anyway.
• 31:42
Speaker 6: And see that's and that's sort of the other problem
• 31:44
Speaker 6: when you have a situation like is, particularly with a
• 31:47
Speaker 6: coach like Lane Kiffin who had this massive success. And
• 31:50
Speaker 6: what we got to remember is that this is the
• 31:52
Speaker 6: best season in old regular season an Old miss history
• 31:56
Speaker 6: history history, and he's been there for sure. So what's
• 31:59
Speaker 6: going to happen is that after this season he's going
• 32:02
Speaker 6: to poach probably I would say at least five to
• 32:05
Speaker 6: maybe fifteen players. So now not only did he sort
• 32:10
Speaker 6: of wreck their playoffs by not coaching, after the season,
• 32:14
Speaker 6: he's going to take a bunch of players, a bunch
• 32:16
Speaker 6: of coaching the systems with him, and now he's going
• 32:19
Speaker 6: to wreck their program and they're going to be where
• 32:21
Speaker 6: Marshall and WB was this year.
• 32:23
  Speaker 2: So it's like it's like it's just a wrecking ball
• 32:26
Speaker 2: all around. So well, it just.
• 32:29
Speaker 5: Goes to prove again. I'm sorry to interrupted that. I
• 32:30
Speaker 5: want to say, it just goes to prove again the
• 32:32
Speaker 5: schools that have the most money, the biggest schools with
• 32:35
Speaker 5: the most money, it's going to be a continual cycle
• 32:38
Speaker 5: of this. Your team's you know, like an old mess
• 32:41
Speaker 5: that although they're they're pretty prominent, but not in you know,
• 32:44
Speaker 5: their football team hasn't been that great. But once they
• 32:47
Speaker 5: get something rolling and they get a team building, somebody's
• 32:51
Speaker 5: going to come in and take your coach and take
• 32:52
Speaker 5: your players. I mean, that's just the cycle that we're
• 32:54
Speaker 5: in in college football world.
• 32:56
Speaker 8: Gusting, isn't that what happened to Marshall.
• 32:58
Speaker 5: Laws That's exactly what I said, and it was don't
• 33:00
Speaker 5: even have to wait to Finn Marshall for not playing
• 33:03
Speaker 5: in a bowl game that they could not field a
• 33:06
Speaker 5: team for I mean, it was insane.
• 33:08
Speaker 4: When you can't all, right to your point, Lisa, when
• 33:11
Speaker 4: you can't when you can't fill the team a respectable
• 33:15
Speaker 4: team to play in the playoffs.
• 33:17
  Speaker 2: It's a safety issue.
• 33:18
Speaker 4: There's a safety issue, and there's something huge, hugely wrong
• 33:25
Speaker 4: with the system because you get everything in the season
• 33:29
Speaker 4: to bof Now, all of a sudden, coach leaves, kids leave,
• 33:35
Speaker 4: and you can't play. So even if I'm a kid
• 33:38
Speaker 4: on the bench who probably wouldn't have played in the game,
• 33:41
  Speaker 4: I don't get the.
• 33:42
Speaker 2: Experience that bowl game. And how could that even be possible.
• 33:47
Speaker 9: Well, here's the good thing about the student athlete. As
• 33:50
Speaker 9: long as it doesn't infringe on the transfer portal, you
• 33:53
Speaker 9: can you can buy their loyalty. For example, a student athlete,
• 33:57
Speaker 9: you pay them X number dollars for in ile. You have,
• 34:01
Speaker 9: you know, one hundred dollars for in ale. They've got
• 34:04
Speaker 9: the number of games in the season. You divide it,
• 34:06
Speaker 9: but you have it so that they get fifty percent
• 34:10
Speaker 9: through the season and fifty they get only they play
• 34:14
Speaker 9: in the ball we go. So that way you can
• 34:17
Speaker 9: at least control the student athlete. Now we have to
• 34:20
Speaker 9: come up with a solution so that we can do
• 34:22
Speaker 9: the coaches because it's not fair to their student athletes.
• 34:25
Speaker 5: And they not design a contract when they signed coaches
• 34:28
Speaker 5: that that would be Oh yeah.
• 34:29
Speaker 6: They definitely design it, but who would sign it. That's
• 34:31
Speaker 6: the problem if you give them that much money.
• 34:34
Speaker 4: I mean, unless it's across the board, obvious, it would
• 34:40
Speaker 4: have to be across the board players and coaches of.
• 34:43
Speaker 2: What everybody can't do.
• 34:46
Speaker 4: But why would My thing is, unfortunately, why would why
• 34:50
Speaker 4: would the NCAA do that?
• 34:52
Speaker 2: Why would they even think to do that?
• 34:53
Speaker 4: At this point, Like it's to me, it's like it's
• 34:55
Speaker 4: the wild, wild West, and they're okay with it. But
• 34:58
Speaker 4: I don't think they're thinks this is just I'm telling you,
• 35:00
Speaker 4: this is the most lame duck organization I've ever seen,
• 35:04
Speaker 4: just to not have the foresighte to like even like
• 35:07
Speaker 4: I said, just push the season back, excuse me, started
• 35:10
Speaker 4: earlier so we don't run into this. Figure out some
• 35:13
Speaker 4: accommodation for student athletes just in case they have to
• 35:16
Speaker 4: start school a little late. Figure out something that we
• 35:20
Speaker 4: can have a transfer report that's not going to be
• 35:22
Speaker 4: in conflict with the season. Because what I'm saying to
• 35:25
Speaker 4: your point, if we're talking about the player, because everybody's
• 35:28
Speaker 4: focused on because I know what everybody Lane Kiffin, you
• 35:30
Speaker 4: would have took the money. Everybody's so money centric, and
• 35:33
  Speaker 4: again it's a lot of money. It's a lot of
• 35:35
Speaker 4: resources to have in order to try to win that championship.
• 35:39
Speaker 4: But to your point, if I'm the starting tackle or
• 35:42
Speaker 4: starting or not even a starting guy, maybe a guy
• 35:46
Speaker 4: who's just going to play till his senior year, I
• 35:48
Speaker 4: don't have NFL pedigree and aspirations, and this is my
• 35:52
Speaker 4: opportunity to go to the playoffs to try to win
• 35:55
Speaker 4: a national championship, to say, and a national chang say
• 35:58
  Speaker 4: I was on a national.
• 35:59
Speaker 2: Chair or at least play.
• 36:01
Speaker 6: So now that's going to be dented, and even their
• 36:05
Speaker 6: ranking might be off because he's not coaching, and he
• 36:08
Speaker 6: took the coaches and he took his coaches with him.
• 36:11
Speaker 6: So what I'm saying is that this just hurts not
• 36:14
Speaker 6: only the players, it hurts the program, but it also
• 36:17
Speaker 6: hurts college football because we have just because I think
• 36:21
Speaker 6: everybody is just greedy and we don't and we have
• 36:24
Speaker 6: a governing organization with a lack of forethought about anything.
• 36:29
  Speaker 2: Well terrible.
• 36:30
Speaker 5: According to Lane, he's not greedy and this was a
• 36:32
Speaker 5: spiritual decision. In fact, if we could just play that
• 36:36
Speaker 5: clip really quick, we need to play this because I
• 36:39
Speaker 5: want these guys to hear it. This is actually what
• 36:41
Speaker 5: he told a reporter today, if you don't mind playing it.
• 36:46
Speaker 10: Yeah, just you know, there was there was something. This
• 36:49
Speaker 10: is really hard. My heart was here, but I just
• 36:52
Speaker 10: you know, talked to some mentors, Coach Carroll, Coach Saban,
• 36:56
Speaker 10: you know, and especially when coach Carrol Saven your dad
• 37:00
Speaker 10: tell you to go, man, take the shot, you know,
• 37:01
Speaker 10: take the shot if you accomplished a lot here. You know,
• 37:04
Speaker 10: I always felt I always hated how we only gave
• 37:07
Speaker 10: one year to Tennessee and left. I really hated that
• 37:09
Speaker 10: feeling of that, you know, even though its exciting year.
• 37:11
Speaker 10: But you know, I think that we gave a lot
• 37:14
Speaker 10: to this program, into the city and you know, some
• 37:17
Speaker 10: of those historic wins in this stadium they ever had,
• 37:20
Speaker 10: and best best regular season in the history of the school.
• 37:24
Speaker 10: So I feel proud of that part. But it just
• 37:28
Speaker 10: became time, you know. I talked to God and told
• 37:30
Speaker 10: me it's time to take a new step. It's a new.
• 37:32
  Speaker 8: Chapter, exactly.
• 37:37
Speaker 5: It has nothing to do with the five star recruits
• 37:40
Speaker 5: waiting for him in New Orleans, right and the money
• 37:42
Speaker 5: in the contract. It's all about God told God told
• 37:47
  Speaker 5: him that contract.
• 37:48
Speaker 6: I said this last week. I do not believe LSU
• 37:52
Speaker 6: is a better job than Old Miss, because I think
• 37:56
Speaker 6: what's happening If you got ninety one million dollars over
• 37:59
Speaker 6: how many as far as just your salary, and then
• 38:02
Speaker 6: you have twenty five million dollars to spend on getting players,
• 38:06
Speaker 6: the expectation is championship next year? Oh yeah, because it ain't.
• 38:12
Speaker 6: It ain't good enough to just creep into the playoffs.
• 38:16
Speaker 6: You better have a significant run and you better win
• 38:19
Speaker 6: a championship within three years, or it's he's gonna find himself.
• 38:24
Speaker 6: They're gonna end up paying a buyo. As opposed with
• 38:28
Speaker 6: Old Miss. I think he could have been there for
• 38:30
Speaker 6: the next fifteen to twenty years and been an absolute legend.
• 38:33
Speaker 4: The question becomes, and I'll oppose, there have you today?
• 38:39
Speaker 4: Am I interested in a long term contract? Or am
• 38:43
Speaker 4: I just am I just wanting to be at a school,
• 38:45
Speaker 4: make some money and go jump to.
• 38:48
  Speaker 2: The next money.
• 38:48
  Speaker 6: That's what it is. I mean, I think that's what
• 38:50
Speaker 6: coaches are doing. They're they're getting a bag.
• 38:53
Speaker 9: I think the coaches are doing that. I think doing that.
• 38:57
Speaker 9: I mean, I think it's just universal, you know, But
• 39:00
Speaker 9: to look at it. If you look at it from
• 39:01
Speaker 9: the NCAA's perspective, what do they still focus on. Their
• 39:05
Speaker 9: focus is still March madness. They generate over a billion
• 39:10
Speaker 9: dollars a year for the organization just through that March madness.
• 39:15
Speaker 9: When it comes to the college football, you've got other things.
• 39:20
Speaker 9: They don't generate that revenue. So they're still focused right
• 39:24
Speaker 9: now on basketball, and what they need to be focused
• 39:26
Speaker 9: on is getting other jobs. Because I agree with what
• 39:30
Speaker 9: you said, it's time for them to go.
• 39:31
Speaker 6: It's time for them to go because even if those
• 39:33
Speaker 6: beigions that they're generating, those could go to the schools,
• 39:36
Speaker 6: and we can filter that money down to all like
• 39:39
Speaker 6: a like a state or whoever like the detail. We
• 39:42
Speaker 6: can start to filter that money down so everybody not
• 39:44
Speaker 6: that can be on a you know, the same level.
• 39:47
Speaker 6: But they can also have some resources to spend and
• 39:49
Speaker 6: develop student athletes because I just don't think they're equipped.
• 39:54
Speaker 6: They they they they just shown nothing good about them.
• 39:58
Speaker 6: Like I said, they could have solved. We wouldn't be
• 40:01
Speaker 6: in this problem if they would have just dealt with this.
• 40:03
Speaker 6: Twenty years ago when Eddie O'Bannon had the lawsuit in
• 40:06
Speaker 6: different things of that name do.
• 40:07
Speaker 5: You replace them? I mean, what do you do? You
• 40:10
  Speaker 5: don't have a reigning.
• 40:11
Speaker 6: Like I think you take the conferences and you you
• 40:15
Speaker 6: have an ad or president or representing from like each
• 40:18
Speaker 6: school and conference and that, and you just create the
• 40:21
Speaker 6: board out of that. So it's like a like a
• 40:23
Speaker 6: like a board of governance. So it's like not necessarily
• 40:26
Speaker 6: that you're gonna like these aren't higher positions and it
• 40:30
  Speaker 6: rotates every Let.
• 40:33
Speaker 4: Me ask this question what I'm not okay with. I
• 40:37
Speaker 4: like what you're saying, but what I don't like is
• 40:40
  Speaker 4: who we're picking. I want someone I don't want. No,
• 40:46
  Speaker 4: I don't want coaches because because here's the problem I'm
• 40:50
Speaker 4: fighting for. If you put me in a position to
• 40:52
Speaker 4: fight for my rights, I'm gonna I'm gonna you know,
• 40:56
Speaker 4: there's gonna be some things that I want. And so
• 40:59
Speaker 4: you got all the coach just want money, and so I.
• 41:03
Speaker 5: Want You're not gonna get anywhere because everybody's going to
• 41:06
Speaker 5: be worried about their own.
• 41:07
Speaker 4: Yes, everybody's gonna be wanting you know how So so
• 41:10
Speaker 4: you want all coaches to get a No, I'm not
• 41:14
Speaker 4: saying you, but hypothetically you want in that system you
• 41:19
Speaker 4: want you want all the coaches to make a million dollars.
• 41:22
Speaker 2: No, I'm not saying no, I know you're not saying that.
• 41:24
  Speaker 2: I'm just hypothetically.
• 41:25
Speaker 4: Okay, so you want everybody to make a million dollars
• 41:28
Speaker 4: as as as a coach, and it's a guaranteed amount
• 41:32
Speaker 4: and it's for five years, right.
• 41:34
Speaker 2: No, I'm not saying that though, No I'm not. I
• 41:37
Speaker 2: keep telling you, I'm not putting it on it.
• 41:41
Speaker 4: But what I'm trying to say is it is all
• 41:45
Speaker 4: about what the coaches are wanting. When players argue about
• 41:50
Speaker 4: what they need, there's always this fight. It's always a
• 41:55
Speaker 4: fight when players, player safety, all these kinds of things
• 41:58
Speaker 4: that players want, insurance, all that.
• 42:01
Speaker 2: I mean, we don't, we don't. We don't jump on it.
• 42:04
Speaker 11: But now, because it's so many coaches who are now
• 42:07
Speaker 11: out here, who are quote considered great coaches, they have
• 42:12
Speaker 11: an unlimited opportunity to make money and go whenever they want.
• 42:16
Speaker 5: So they would make the rules in their favors.
• 42:20
Speaker 9: I'm saying, I think the bigger issues, I think we
• 42:26
Speaker 9: have to address the fundamental question first. I think the
• 42:29
Speaker 9: first question is are they student athletes or are they
• 42:33
Speaker 9: going to be semi pro pro athletes because if they're not,
• 42:36
Speaker 9: if they're student athletes.
• 42:37
Speaker 8: Going back to what you're.
• 42:38
Speaker 9: Saying, then perhaps we should have educators that control the
• 42:42
  Speaker 9: n CUB A m miss teacher here.
• 42:45
Speaker 8: But you see what I'm saying. So we have to
• 42:47
Speaker 8: define what their role is going to be. Are they
• 42:50
Speaker 8: going to be student athletes?
• 42:51
Speaker 4: Are they going to be athletes you're rid of?
• 42:55
Speaker 2: I asked this question. We talked about this a couple
• 42:57
  Speaker 2: of weeks back.
• 42:57
Speaker 4: I asked, when's the last time you've heard of an
• 43:00
Speaker 4: athlete be called a student athlete? What I'm saying, the
• 43:04
Speaker 4: NBA says, when it's commedian, Yes, But for the most part,
• 43:08
Speaker 4: if you're a football player, basketball player, baseball player, you
• 43:11
Speaker 4: are a baseball player, you are a football player, you're
• 43:14
Speaker 4: a basketball player. Ad no one's worried about when the
• 43:16
Speaker 4: last time you heard anybody? When's the last time you
• 43:19
Speaker 4: ever heard of somebody flunking out of school? So all
• 43:22
Speaker 4: of a sudden, these great athletes are all great students.
• 43:26
Speaker 2: Yeah, I would almost say.
• 43:30
Speaker 6: It's hard to do that because really, when you talk
• 43:33
Speaker 6: about making them essentially employees, we're only talking about football,
• 43:39
Speaker 6: men's basketball, women's basketball, because none of the other sports
• 43:42
Speaker 6: make money, So it would be hard to say we're
• 43:45
Speaker 6: just going to make these three sports employees and everybody
• 43:48
Speaker 6: else y'all could be subject to the NC doublea's rules.
• 43:51
Speaker 6: But what I'm saying as far as representation, if we
• 43:54
Speaker 6: get rid of the NC Double A and we have
• 43:56
Speaker 6: representation from each conference, that would maybe include an ad,
• 44:01
Speaker 6: a coach, a player, athletes, that would include presidents, and
• 44:06
Speaker 6: so it would be a collective body, a mixture of
• 44:09
Speaker 6: individuals who have a vested interest in seeing this thing
• 44:13
Speaker 6: go forward. Because I fear that where we're going, we're
• 44:17
Speaker 6: going to a bad place, because we're going to a
• 44:19
Speaker 6: point where it's they're just going to be employees for
• 44:22
Speaker 6: those three sports. They're going to get rid of the
• 44:24
Speaker 6: student you know, indication after a while, because it's just
• 44:28
Speaker 6: like you said, it's just it's nonsense that we do that.
• 44:30
Speaker 6: I mean, you got players making millions of dollars, You
• 44:33
Speaker 6: got a twenty you got a coach right now with
• 44:35
Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars to spend on student athletes.
• 44:40
  Speaker 2: Some believable.
• 44:40
Speaker 9: And thinking of it this way, imagine if they took
• 44:43
Speaker 9: that twenty five million dollars, you could have twenty five
• 44:46
Speaker 9: hundred students that got ten thousand dollars years scholarships. Crazy, Yeah,
• 44:53
Speaker 9: in a in a small, poor state like West Virginia,
• 44:56
Speaker 9: that would be great.
• 44:56
Speaker 8: It would help these students here in this state. Same
• 45:00
  Speaker 8: with Mississippi.
• 45:01
Speaker 4: But we are focused on the top notch players because
• 45:08
Speaker 4: the money is we're talking about the money. But when
• 45:12
Speaker 4: we're talking about the money, we're talking about who we're
• 45:15
Speaker 4: talking about the best players at whatever that level is.
• 45:20
Speaker 2: So that that next tier player, what's he get? You
• 45:26
Speaker 2: know what I'm saying limited out But I would tell
• 45:30
Speaker 2: you again not to be a hater.
• 45:34
Speaker 6: But I don't even know if that's going to guarantee
• 45:36
Speaker 6: you a championship because when we talk about having those
• 45:40
Speaker 6: sort of resources, like at a pro level, you have
• 45:42
Speaker 6: a GM between that coach and that player, right right,
• 45:45
Speaker 6: You have a GM that has a different eye than
• 45:48
Speaker 6: the coach. So if you're just giving the coach to
• 45:50
Speaker 6: twenty five million dollars just because you have a collection
• 45:53
Speaker 6: of talent does not guarantee that you're gonna win on Saturdays.
• 45:57
Speaker 6: We've seen that it's not always the most talented team
• 46:00
Speaker 6: that's just gonna win. And and I would just be
• 46:03
Speaker 6: very careful about giving a coach a blank paycheck.
• 46:08
Speaker 4: Well, because to that point, I'm gonna use you as
• 46:12
Speaker 4: an example. So you are the player on the team
• 46:18
Speaker 4: that I know as a coach who manages some stuff
• 46:23
Speaker 4: in and behind the curtain that you don't see. You
• 46:26
Speaker 4: might not see it on Saturday, you might not see
• 46:27
Speaker 4: it on Sunday, you might not see it on Friday.
• 46:29
Speaker 4: But I realized how valuable you are to the team.
• 46:34
Speaker 2: Am I gonna pay you for that saying?
• 46:38
Speaker 4: Because the other there's the other guy who's the great
• 46:42
Speaker 4: athlete to struggling with his grades. So he's me hanging out.
• 46:50
Speaker 4: He's hanging out. He he's barely making through his grades.
• 46:53
Speaker 4: He's just wanting to have fun and play ball. But
• 46:56
Speaker 4: he's so good. Who am I gonna give the most?
• 47:00
Speaker 4: I mean, you gotta give it to the guy with
• 47:02
Speaker 4: the talent. But to your point, I think that's where
• 47:04
Speaker 4: the management comes into place, because you gotta figure, you
• 47:08
Speaker 4: gotta have some team guys, you gotta have the leadership,
• 47:11
Speaker 4: you gotta have some talent, you gotta have a good mix.
• 47:14
  Speaker 2: But see, I don't think I don't think they're mixing.
• 47:16
  Speaker 4: I think they're I'm thinking they're taking the top players
• 47:19
Speaker 4: and just throwing just throwing money at and the guy
• 47:22
Speaker 4: who's the guy who's sitting back there, who we think
• 47:26
Speaker 4: is going to be pretty good man. But he's a
• 47:28
Speaker 4: leader and he's you know, he's dealing with the kids
• 47:31
Speaker 4: to make sure everybody's doing everything.
• 47:33
Speaker 2: Okay, we ain't paying.
• 47:35
Speaker 9: Him well, I think I think moving forward, you do
• 47:37
Speaker 9: need to have a general manager for these sports. You
• 47:40
Speaker 9: got to have somebody that's looking at it strictly from
• 47:42
Speaker 9: a business perspective and statistical perspective. I mean, if you
• 47:45
Speaker 9: look at it, and I don't mean to throw anyone
• 47:47
Speaker 9: under the bus, but you look at arch Manning. Okay, yes,
• 47:50
Speaker 9: he had a good win this past weekend over text
• 47:52
Speaker 9: A and M He got eight million dollars for three losses.
• 47:55
Speaker 8: I mean eight million dollars.
• 47:57
Speaker 9: I mean, come on now, we apparently Worby part wasn't
• 48:00
Speaker 9: giving him the right glasses.
• 48:02
Speaker 8: He didn't see what to do.
• 48:04
Speaker 9: The reality is we have to look at it from
• 48:07
Speaker 9: a business objective perspective, and this is where data analytics
• 48:12
Speaker 9: comes in. This is where you get a business person
• 48:14
Speaker 9: in there to help make those decisions.
• 48:17
Speaker 8: Because the coach is gonna just.
• 48:19
Speaker 9: He may he or she may get emotional to decide
• 48:21
Speaker 9: to pay somebody something that it turns out not to
• 48:23
Speaker 9: be what it was worth.
• 48:25
  Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
• 48:26
Speaker 6: I just I think it's not going to be as
• 48:29
Speaker 6: easy as what people think managing twenty five million dollars.
• 48:33
Speaker 6: And I would say I lived in Louisiana. I lived
• 48:36
Speaker 6: ten minutes from LSU. If we think WVU has a
• 48:41
Speaker 6: rabbit fan base, we don't know.
• 48:44
  Speaker 2: Whatever.
• 48:45
Speaker 6: When you talk about LSU and Southern University, them two schools,
• 48:50
Speaker 6: they have just fan bases that are on a next
• 48:53
Speaker 6: level and the expectation is championship or bus. They may
• 48:58
Speaker 6: not be saying it now, but when twenty twenty six
• 49:01
Speaker 6: rolls around, it's going to be all right, what when
• 49:04
Speaker 6: are we getting getting the camp and we're making the
• 49:06
Speaker 6: gumbo to go to the championship or whatever it's going
• 49:09
Speaker 6: to be at I'm telling him that's that's that's the expectation,
• 49:13
  Speaker 6: and it's it's And like I said, I just think
• 49:17
Speaker 6: to your point, even when we talk about coaches, as
• 49:19
Speaker 6: a coach, if you're coming up now, are you just
• 49:22
Speaker 6: thinking about how to cash out and get the biggest
• 49:25
Speaker 6: bag possible or are you thinking or is there any
• 49:28
Speaker 6: coaches that thinking about legacy. Are you thinking about, Hey,
• 49:31
Speaker 6: I'm going to be at the school for fifteen years,
• 49:34
Speaker 6: we might win some championships, might go to the playoffs.
• 49:36
Speaker 6: Are coaches even thinking that way now?
• 49:39
  Speaker 2: Like players?
• 49:40
Speaker 5: No, I was just going to say, I think coaches
• 49:42
Speaker 5: probably have good intentions, Like in the in the case
• 49:45
Speaker 5: of Lane Kiffin when he when he went to Ole Miss,
• 49:47
Speaker 5: I think he felt like, Okay, they're paying me good money.
• 49:51
Speaker 5: We've got a winning season here. Lsu approached him with
• 49:55
Speaker 5: this offer and it was probably just an offer that
• 49:58
Speaker 5: he an offer he couldn't refuse us, right, all the
• 50:00
Speaker 5: money that's generational wealth, and so he's definitely at fault.
• 50:06
Speaker 5: He's not a victim. But yet these schools are approaching
• 50:09
Speaker 5: these coaches mid season or at the end of the
• 50:11
Speaker 5: season when they're getting ready to enter the playoff you
• 50:14
Speaker 5: know scenario, and giving them an offer that you know
• 50:18
Speaker 5: he couldn't walk away from.
• 50:20
Speaker 9: And not only did he get the generational wealth, imagine
• 50:22
Speaker 9: twenty five million dollars. To put it in perspective, that's
• 50:25
Speaker 9: almost a quarter million dollar per athlete on the team.
• 50:29
Speaker 8: Just just so you put it on more than that,
• 50:33
Speaker 8: just you put it in perspective.
• 50:35
Speaker 9: Wow, if you have one hundred and five students on
• 50:37
Speaker 9: a football team, You've got almost quarter million dollars.
• 50:41
Speaker 2: Wow. Wow, I just just per year too. That's a
• 50:46
  Speaker 2: lot of money. Yeah, that's a that's a ton. That's
• 50:48
Speaker 2: a ton of money.
• 50:49
Speaker 6: Imagine be a seventeen years old and you got a
• 50:52
  Speaker 6: quartermal or I.
• 50:53
Speaker 2: Don't even know how to count it and how to
• 50:56
  Speaker 2: count it.
• 50:56
Speaker 5: You think about these young kids that that's a lot
• 50:59
Speaker 5: of money too, to be you know, laid at their
• 51:01
Speaker 5: feet and be able to handle.
• 51:03
Speaker 6: And and that's just could just be a base that
• 51:07
  Speaker 6: computer they make.
• 51:10
Speaker 4: And and again we talk about you know, athletes football
• 51:15
Speaker 4: specifically about low income families where they come from. It's great,
• 51:20
  Speaker 4: it's it's a great thing for those families because it's
• 51:23
Speaker 4: changing the whole dynamics of those of those families. But
• 51:27
Speaker 4: it is, but it is totally something different into the
• 51:32
Speaker 4: sport itself, because to me, it just doesn't seem it
• 51:38
Speaker 4: just doesn't seem right.
• 51:39
  Speaker 2: It just doesn't.
• 51:40
Speaker 4: I mean, and and and there's some there's some folks
• 51:42
Speaker 4: out there is probably gonna be like, oh man, he's
• 51:44
Speaker 4: just he's just mad because he didn't get it. Yeah,
• 51:47
Speaker 4: I am mad at you, but I just don't.
• 51:50
Speaker 2: I don't see how it's going to make.
• 51:54
Speaker 4: It's going to make players just be happy with the game,
• 51:59
Speaker 4: just happy about the game. It's about the Like I'm
• 52:02
Speaker 4: in the game now because I want the money and
• 52:06
Speaker 4: I'm hoping to get the money.
• 52:08
Speaker 2: I think, go ahead.
• 52:10
Speaker 9: What we keep talking about football? But what about University
• 52:13
Speaker 9: Kentucky twenty one million dollars for their basketball team this season?
• 52:19
Speaker 2: Wow? Twelve to fifteen players? Is that the resources that
• 52:24
Speaker 2: they have or that's.
• 52:25
Speaker 6: What they're paying out, that's what they're paying out that
• 52:27
Speaker 6: they're paying that out to the basketball team.
• 52:29
  Speaker 8: That's what I read.
• 52:30
Speaker 6: Wow, see and that's even less players, Yes, a mix
• 52:35
  Speaker 6: of fifteen right?
• 52:36
Speaker 2: Yeah, so East got could get over a meal.
• 52:40
  Speaker 5: Well, I believable.
• 52:43
Speaker 4: But it speaks again, it speaks to the money that's
• 52:47
Speaker 4: in sports that you just you just never think about,
• 52:51
Speaker 4: that's been floating around out there. Whoever's been clearing that money,
• 52:55
Speaker 4: whoever's been getting that money, whether it's the school, whether
• 52:57
Speaker 4: it's the organizations, whatever, they're comfortable enough now, but to
• 53:02
Speaker 4: throw that kind of money back to the app and
• 53:05
Speaker 4: I guess the bigger like what does it do for?
• 53:07
Speaker 4: Like how does that kick back to the school in
• 53:10
Speaker 4: any way. I mean, I guess you know, if you're
• 53:12
  Speaker 4: Kentucky l s U, Right, you're getting that publicity from
• 53:16
  Speaker 4: you know.
• 53:17
Speaker 5: Well, if you're going to championships and winning, you got
• 53:20
Speaker 5: the alumni happy, the alumni will donate more money.
• 53:22
  Speaker 9: Right.
• 53:22
Speaker 6: Would you get fatigued though, like because you would have,
• 53:26
Speaker 6: you would literally you're gonna get hit up every scene.
• 53:30
Speaker 5: But if you're winning, nothing matters. If you're a man,
• 53:34
Speaker 5: if you've got that kind of money tigue.
• 53:37
  Speaker 2: After a while, don't call me. I don't have that
• 53:39
Speaker 2: kind of money. I'm unlisted. Don't call me.
• 53:46
Speaker 4: I'm not helping because and I'm not helping. And I've
• 53:48
Speaker 4: said this before, I'm not helping because nobody paid me.
• 53:51
Speaker 4: I had to work to pay my to get paid.
• 53:53
Speaker 4: So I'm but but even with that, you should have
• 53:56
Speaker 4: been paid something. Everybody who aid a college sport at
• 54:02
Speaker 4: some level, particularly if you know what they used to say,
• 54:04
Speaker 4: you know what, that's just something did you get your
• 54:07
  Speaker 4: school paid for?
• 54:08
Speaker 2: Yeah, but that's not the value.
• 54:12
  Speaker 1: School.
• 54:13
Speaker 2: I see the value of that at all. The value
• 54:16
Speaker 2: of that is plumbinging.
• 54:17
Speaker 4: So because the reality to this, and I know we
• 54:21
Speaker 4: got to go the reality of that is me sitting
• 54:25
Speaker 4: in a class doesn't cost any more money for that class,
• 54:31
Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, So like that, there's nothing
• 54:34
Speaker 4: I mean, there is no cost to a class when
• 54:37
Speaker 4: when when you put two athletes in there, that's not
• 54:40
Speaker 4: going to cost the school any amount of money. Right
• 54:44
Speaker 4: because whether you're there or not, profess is going to
• 54:47
Speaker 4: be there going to be that I don't know.
• 54:49
  Speaker 3: Man.
• 54:50
Speaker 2: All right, well this this.
• 54:54
Speaker 4: We'll get back on this top getting I'm sure before this,
• 54:57
Speaker 4: before the seasons up.
• 54:58
Speaker 2: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we appreci hey you listening,
• 55:00
Speaker 2: and we will be back again next week
