Transcript
- 0:00All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
- 0:03a Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:06Network flagship here at Des Moines Sports Station One O 6.3
- 0:10KXNO. For the next two hours, Trent
- 0:13Condon and myself, Ken Miller will talk sports with you.
- 0:15And thanks for starting your afternoon with us.
- 0:17Wherever you are listening in the state of Iowa, anywhere on
- 0:20the I Heart app. Here's what's coming up on our
- 0:22program on this Monday. At the bottom of the hour, we
- 0:25will chat with Bill Seals. The Cyclones head into their
- 0:28break and do so with a perfect four and O slate.
- 0:31Bill Seals on Iowa State coming up at 12:30.
- 0:35Then Bama, Trent and I will take a look at a round look back
- 0:38rather at the week that was in college football.
- 0:41Look forward to that before. Scott Dockerman will join us
- 0:44recapping UMass in Iowa and ahead to the Rutgers game coming
- 0:48up on Friday night. That is a 7:00 tip.
- 0:51It's on Fox, but if you can't be in front of your TV, it airs
- 0:54down the dial or down the dial on the on the AM dial and down
- 0:58the hall from us on News Radio 1040.
- 1:01WHO? So a couple of games left in the
- 1:04NFL tonight. That'll put the capper on week
- 1:06#2 another. Depends who you route for.
- 1:10See if you see the weekend differently.
- 1:12Your team got clobbered. My team got screwed.
- 1:15Not really. It was the rule.
- 1:16It was the rule, it was Enrique standing on the centre.
- 1:19You're not allowed to do that and but never gets called except
- 1:22for, you know, when it goes against the team you look for.
- 1:25But anyways. It's not true.
- 1:26It's not true, it did yesterday, but the the Bears are awful, JJ
- 1:31McCarthy stinks as we overreact to week #2 but let's start in a
- 1:35college game, unless you wanted to linger on the NFL.
- 1:37But we could get there a little bit later on because I I don't
- 1:39need my blood pressure skyrocketing. 12O2.
- 1:42Ditto. Oh, what a what a an up and down
- 1:47missed it. Anyways, we'll get back to the
- 1:49NFL. All right, so let's start with
- 1:51Iowa State 'cause they played first and look, it was far from
- 1:55the thing beauty at the end of the day, the four No, yes, and
- 1:59that's what it's all about. It doesn't ask how, it says how
- 2:02many and that's how many they've got as they go into their buy 4.
- 2:05No, we talked all August how difficult this was going to be,
- 2:08you know, coming off what they had to do, go to Dublin, play a
- 2:11really good FCS team, which they did, pasted them, here comes
- 2:17their rival, got them in a close game and then head on the road
- 2:21to George Jonesboro, AR and to find a way to win a football
- 2:25game and that's what they did. So hats off to him for that.
- 2:29That overby they win this football game that played late
- 2:33in the first half. That was really good.
- 2:36I understand there there's still 30 minutes of football
- 2:37afterwards, but boy that felt so massive.
- 2:40Yeah, I agree with and now that you put it that way, that was a
- 2:42big play. I'm Carson Brown at the end.
- 2:44Yes, I was shocked they were throwing the ball.
- 2:46Right. Yes, I'm.
- 2:47Stunned. What do you do?
- 2:48Nice play. But yeah, look, Rocco Beck plays
- 2:53for the Cyclones and he's got a chance when he's on the field
- 2:56because he's that difference maker.
- 2:57I'm surprised they didn't run the football more.
- 3:00They seem to be doing. Didn't you say at some point
- 3:03last week the Arkansas State was giving up over 11 yards a carry?
- 3:07Yeah, it was 11.1 yards per carry and it was brutal.
- 3:10Basically the whole Arkansas game that did that because they
- 3:12were OK in the first game. It was just awful against
- 3:15Arkansas the week before. And I'm right there with you and
- 3:18we talked about it. Look, if if Iowa State wasn't
- 3:20able to run the ball, then we were going to have major
- 3:22conservatives. They were able to run the ball.
- 3:24Now did they do it enough? Malice's game plan.
- 3:28Head scratching. Yeah, head scratch wasn't his
- 3:31best work. No, I'm, I'm with you on that.
- 3:34Rocco was OK and like he said, he made the play late to win the
- 3:38game to salt it away and then put a knee on it.
- 3:40The. Interception.
- 3:41There should be somewhere in in statistics.
- 3:44I don't know who's going to be in charge of this.
- 3:46OK. But he's, he's charged with the
- 3:47interception. That's not his fault, right?
- 3:50That's a team interception. Well, I brought up.
- 3:52Last week, turnover worthy plays and that's one of those
- 3:54statistics that that goes and would not count against the
- 3:57quarterback in that instance is turnover worthy plays when we
- 4:01get Bama on. Speaking of that, DJ Lagway, 5
- 4:03interceptions, he actually had seven turnover where he plays.
- 4:06Did he really? It could have been even worse,
- 4:09but we'll get to that a little bit later on.
- 4:12You got the win. I think you said it at the top.
- 4:14This is not going to be 1. You're going to be bouncing your
- 4:16grandkids underneath, talking about the time that they went
- 4:19down to Jonesboro and got the win.
- 4:21They just got the win right. And what could be a special
- 4:23season, they got the win. No ammunition for the Big 12
- 4:26haters out there because they're waiting and they're waiting for
- 4:30anything that they can use. Arizona State's lost last week
- 4:32to Mississippi State, those kind of things.
- 4:34That's not there anymore. You got the win, you move on.
- 4:37You get your bye week now and chance to get right.
- 4:40One guy I want to single out in positive light, Trey Bells
- 4:43interception. No, he I mean, that's top 10
- 4:45Sports Center, right? I mean, I don't know if it was
- 4:47or it wasn't, but boy, oh boy, what a play he made.
- 4:51You know who else caught my eye in that game more?
- 4:53The tight end. He's got a little got a little
- 4:55giddy up to him. Johnston Kid.
- 4:58Did you know he could run like? That.
- 4:59Oh, absolutely. I saw him at the high school.
- 5:00So at the high school level in the way that Johnston plays with
- 5:03Coach Woodley up there, they split him out.
- 5:05I mean, there were four wide a lot.
- 5:06So he was playing in the slot and even outside a lot of times.
- 5:09So I just wondered if it was going to translate if he could
- 5:11get big enough. It was never an athleticism
- 5:13question. He always had that.
- 5:15Got some wheels? He absolutely does and just goes
- 5:18back to what we talked about this team, the death at the
- 5:21tight end position. He's incredible.
- 5:23Yep, absolutely incredible what they have.
- 5:24Couldn't go and couple of guys picked things up and he was
- 5:28certainly one of them. Good to see Cooper Alexander
- 5:30caught a put caught a pass in that football game.
- 5:32Carson Brown was Carson Brown you mentioned over me so well
- 5:36caught a ball did was it him or Townsend had the bad drop One of
- 5:39the two newcomers had AI think it was I think it was 2, but it
- 5:43had a good game. I mean that play down the left,
- 5:45down the left sideline and what a throw by Rocco to put it in
- 5:48there. Just terrific defense was OK, a
- 5:51lot of missed tackles, a lot of missed tackles.
- 5:53That would be the one thing maybe that's fatigue, but lick
- 5:56your wounds, boys. Here comes Arizona.
- 6:00It's a night game. It's a 6:00 kick on ESPN on the
- 6:0327th that was just announced earlier this morning.
- 6:07So Arizona, Iowa State in Arizona looked pretty good on on
- 6:11Friday night against K State. Not sure if you're getting home
- 6:14in time after. You did.
- 6:15And seeing you the end of that one.
- 6:17But yeah, this this game, I I just thought this was going to
- 6:20be a little bit tricky, but we shall see.
- 6:22Both teams have a bye week this week, so they'll both get the
- 6:26rest as we lead up to that game over to Iowa City for a 630
- 6:31kickoff. Congratulations to Coach
- 6:33Ference, the all time winningest coach in the Big 10.
- 6:36I can go a lot of directions with this.
- 6:38When they should have beat UMass, they did beat UMass.
- 6:41That's a. Bad team.
- 6:42That's a really bad team. Yeah, that's a really bad.
- 6:44Team, That's what we thought Albany was going to look like,
- 6:46yeah. How did Kate Region look so bad
- 6:50against Iowa State? Too charged up, I mean when you
- 6:53get a penalty on the first play and then the things are off.
- 6:56He talked about having the wrong cleats last week on Tuesday or
- 6:59just a lot of negative that went against him.
- 7:01You could even see before he busted one there early in the
- 7:03second-half too. He was frustrated with himself
- 7:05one time after he had like a 40 yard return that he didn't get
- 7:08the end zone for that. So I think that's kind of that's
- 7:11the way he's wired and I'm sure he's kind of that kind of guy
- 7:14out there that is always really amped up.
- 7:17And when it goes too far, as it did against Iowa State, you can
- 7:20see the negative part of that one.
- 7:22But a game he had, he becomes the first Iowa player to have a
- 7:27kickoff return, a punt return, a receiving touchdown and a
- 7:30rushing touchdown in his career. That's unbelievable.
- 7:33Yeah, and Jesus. What?
- 7:35I thought Tim Dwight would have done that.
- 7:36Yeah, you would have, right. If, if, if anybody, you would
- 7:39have thought that would have been him.
- 7:39Of course, the last time we saw him was returning a kick in the
- 7:42Super Bowl. Super Bowl 3333.
- 7:46Yeah. What?
- 7:47Who won? Oh, OK, OK, yeah, anyways.
- 7:50The team that got beat by freaking leverage yesterday.
- 7:53Did you see anything in the passing game that says not that
- 7:58it's fixed? But OK, well, they were throwing
- 8:00the ball down the field right away.
- 8:01Certainly encourage. Yeah, right.
- 8:03Away, Right away. Second play from the game.
- 8:05Second play of the. Game Sam Phillips up the left
- 8:07sideline, looked like he was looking for maybe a post route
- 8:09over top that wasn't there. Went to his next read.
- 8:12That's been a knock against Mark Radowski as he's not great going
- 8:15through his progressions and he was able to do that.
- 8:17Find Phillips on that one. Then the next play it was an RPO
- 8:21found the guy darting in South Anderson.
- 8:23Great route that leverage on the cornerback different.
- 8:27There's a couple of drops in that game, maybe, maybe more
- 8:30than a couple. KJ Parker had two.
- 8:32Yes, he. Did Anderson had one?
- 8:34There was maybe a tight end that had one I.
- 8:37Remember Parker's two and and and certainly Anderson's.
- 8:41Dayton Howard maybe had one in there too.
- 8:43Can't have. It it was in the fourth quarter,
- 8:45you've got to help me because I didn't see.
- 8:46It you, you were out at that point.
- 8:48I had to keep it on. It was on.
- 8:49One of the TV's had to keep it on because late in the game did.
- 8:53Yep, got a couple of carries in the game.
- 8:55I saw him. I saw him in the in the box.
- 8:58Score. So he got in there.
- 8:59That was a happy moment. Had a lot of smiles in in the
- 9:02house there and the kids got a kick out of him.
- 9:04My wife got a kick out of it. Really fun to see him out there
- 9:07for. Those of you don't know family.
- 9:08Friends. Yes.
- 9:08Yeah, I grew up, his mom and me grew up from kindergarten
- 9:13through high school together, still remained really good
- 9:15friends. Dad also an Osage guy that play
- 9:18fantasy sports with and tailgate with and everything like.
- 9:21So yeah, that was a special one. That was really cool.
- 9:23And just hearing his name go over the PA as they're watching
- 9:26the TV broadcast, Yeah, that was really awesome.
- 9:28Indiana, Iowa, It's just been announced.
- 9:30Did you see this? 230 great kick off time.
- 9:32Except it's on Peacock and it's the ladle land, right?
- 9:40It's the way it's the era that we're in.
- 9:42So and it was going to happen sooner at some point.
- 9:44And this is the week it's going to happen.
- 9:46Boy, that's the same week. So, So Iowa State, Arizona will
- 9:51be going up against Oregon, Penn State.
- 9:55Is that the whiteout for Penn? I think it.
- 9:57Is yes, it is I. Think it is on NBC, so that'll
- 10:00certainly draw some eyeballs. God I love this sport.
- 10:03It is so much fun, isn't it? It just truly blows me away
- 10:06every single week. It delivered.
- 10:08So here is the Big 10 matchups that week, including this is an
- 10:12interesting one, Which one USC goes to Illinois.
- 10:16That is the Big noon kickoff body clock.
- 10:18To be in Champaign, so get ready for a 9:00 AM kick. 9:00 AM
- 10:23Pacific Time for the Trojans going to Illinois.
- 10:27Rutgers at Minnesota. BTC got that one at 11.
- 10:30Your CBS game Ohio State goes to Washington.
- 10:33I feel like I have no feel at all in the Huskies.
- 10:35No, nor do I. No feel at Ohio State screwing
- 10:39around with Ohio, mentioned Indiana.
- 10:41Washington in a primetime spot this weekend, I think.
- 10:45They play wazoo, don't they? And and.
- 10:47Somebody got they do national game CBS.
- 10:51Middle of the day or night 63630. 630 CBS has that one.
- 10:56I'll be over on NBC watching Illinois, Indiana.
- 10:58Yeah, me too. Me too.
- 10:59It's going to be outstanding. Other games.
- 11:01How about this one? UCLA at Northwestern, It's a 230
- 11:05game on BTN and then the NBC game.
- 11:08Oregon, Penn State. UCLA is in the market for a new
- 11:13head coach as his Vaught Tech trump two weeks into the season.
- 11:16You've got guys walking the plank.
- 11:17I think last year somebody put on one of the, maybe Feldman,
- 11:21one of those guys, maybe Brett Mcmurphy.
- 11:24The the first fire in college football last year was like Week
- 11:273 of October. I don't remember who it was, but
- 11:32boy, oh boy. It seems early, right?
- 11:33But what are you going to do when you're used to look, I
- 11:35don't care who you name as head coach, you're not filling the
- 11:38Rose Bowl. No, not at all.
- 11:39No. Hey, it's, it's, it's not on
- 11:41campus. I'll take people's word for it
- 11:44that it's tough to get to for those people that lived there.
- 11:47I walked out of the lobby, got in an Uber.
- 11:49Next thing I knew was at the game.
- 11:50So I have no idea how we got there, how difficult it was, but
- 11:56it's just, I mean, it's spectacular to play there, but
- 11:59it's, it's, I guess not ideal. From offshore, here are your
- 12:03odds to be the next head coach for both Vattec and for UCLA.
- 12:07For the Bruins, start Big 10. You know, So is Campbell on the
- 12:11list? I'm scrolling, I'm scrolling it.
- 12:14He's way down there. He's.
- 12:15Like this because 2015, I saw one, one, I don't know, pole or
- 12:21whatever you want to call it. One list had him right at the
- 12:23top. He's not going to use LA.
- 12:25If he didn't take the USA job. He's not going to use, which he
- 12:28could have. Yes, the job was his.
- 12:30He was. He turned it.
- 12:30Down. When he turned it down, Lincoln
- 12:32Riley was next in line right when he turned it down.
- 12:36Think of that. Lincoln Riley was the guy Your
- 12:39betting favorite is who? John Gruden.
- 12:43Come on. Now the second choice, is it a
- 12:46college? Name.
- 12:47It is. Is he currently a head coach?
- 12:50He is. What conference?
- 12:52The Big 12 and it's not. Aranda.
- 12:57No decent name. He is on the list.
- 13:00He is the 6th betting choice. It's Dionne.
- 13:03Dionne's going to quit because of his health, yeah.
- 13:06I I think that's more likely than him taking a job like.
- 13:10Design, huh? Another Big 12 up next, Kenny
- 13:13Dillingham. Now is he going to leave his own
- 13:15mind? No, I don't think he will
- 13:16because he and they've been fun, right?
- 13:18Rising like crazy to get a new indoor facility.
- 13:22And I think it's working. I think the community is is
- 13:25heeding the call. We'll see.
- 13:27Let's see, how about some other names?
- 13:28Alex Golish is on the list. He's 18 to 1.
- 13:30He's. Going to get a job somewhere.
- 13:31He will. John Summerall, who's doing a
- 13:33great job again at Tulane, who's been great everywhere he's been.
- 13:36He's on the list. A little bit further down,
- 13:38Vottech. Also listed here, John Gruden as
- 13:40the betting favorite. The second choice, though, not a
- 13:42surprise. Shane Beamer.
- 13:44Go back, go back, we're dead. Of course, built things up.
- 13:46Justin Wilcox on both of these lists.
- 13:48Alex Golish on both of these lists.
- 13:52Jimbo Fisher of Vottech. Interesting name.
- 13:56Willie Fritz doing a great job of Houston, as we saw Friday
- 13:58night. You had that game too, didn't?
- 14:00You that was that was a winner so.
- 14:02This is from a buddy, Jay Scott. We just talked about Iowa State,
- 14:05Arizona going up against Oregon and Penn State.
- 14:07They're also going up against Alabama, Georgia at the same
- 14:11time. What a night of college
- 14:13football. You got to get your multi screen
- 14:15set up. I got to watch on my phone.
- 14:16I'm at Prairie Meadows that night.
- 14:18It's closing night. I It's all right.
- 14:21It is. You got DVR you'll be able to
- 14:24watch. No, I'll be able to watch, but
- 14:25wait, we'll watch it on my well, you do it right on the phone.
- 14:27Absolutely. That's the one thing.
- 14:29And I bitch and moan about about this stuff because I'm old and
- 14:31all old people bitch and moan. And if you're not old and
- 14:34you're, you will be at some point, I hope for your sake and
- 14:37you'll be bitching and moaning. But when I go for take to take
- 14:39jet for a walk or you got to pee in the middle of a game and you
- 14:41won't leave me alone, just take my phone.
- 14:44Boom, right? You got some ear pads to put in?
- 14:46No, I just turned it up. I do have those, but anyways,
- 14:50good stuff. 12:15 here. Miller and Conda, we're going to
- 14:52talk at the bottom of the hour to Bill Seals on Iowa State.
- 14:56What else from the weekend? What game did you see much of
- 14:58the Notre Dame game? I did.
- 15:00What a finish, what a game. And I'll be honest, Notre Dame,
- 15:04that thing could have been even worse.
- 15:06Now the endless cuts to the holder, Can we stop?
- 15:12Do we have to show him 15 times? Yeah, 20 times.
- 15:17How many times? Yeah, no, it was constant.
- 15:19It was too much it. Was constant, yeah.
- 15:21It was over the top to continually cut back him.
- 15:26They did it. I mean, before the drive even
- 15:29starts, they just kept going back to him and back to him
- 15:31back. You're up 6.
- 15:32I know get a stop. And get a stop and get this kid
- 15:35off the hook. And no, they wouldn't.
- 15:38They just kept cutting. I felt absolutely terrible for
- 15:41him. And then look at, to be honest,
- 15:43did you see the replay? I mean, one of the IT was the
- 15:46left guard for A and MI don't know who it was for Notre Dame.
- 15:49He absolutely tackled him on his way to the quarterback, threw
- 15:54him on the ground. Reed was about to be sacked but
- 15:59didn't get called. Reed missed that.
- 16:04I saw four guys wide open up the field.
- 16:07That Notre Dame defense is rough.
- 16:10He got a game coming up against Arkansas.
- 16:12That Petrino, he's got that offense cooking.
- 16:14Yeah, he's got a quarterback. And talk about a charged up
- 16:18environment. How often does Notre Dame make
- 16:20their way down to Fayetteville? Not very often.
- 16:23They are going to be ready to go in that one.
- 16:26If you think that this is just going to be no problem, they're
- 16:29going to win the final ten and get into the playoff, I got news
- 16:31for you. This team absolutely can lose to
- 16:33Arkansas, definitely lose to USC.
- 16:36Those wide receivers against that defensive backfield, this
- 16:40thing. Could get ugly. 8:00 and 4:00.
- 16:42Yeah, it could. Well, USC is going to give them
- 16:45a game. I'm convinced that's going to
- 16:47happen. We'll we'll see.
- 16:48You know, one of the best things I saw all weekend and it's an
- 16:52ACC thing, so I'll get it out of the way now, but AC, the ACC is
- 16:57a conference taking us behind the curtain when it comes to
- 16:59replay. It was amazing.
- 17:01It's phenomenal, isn't it? It's all, all the transparency
- 17:05is right there on display. You're listening to the replay
- 17:09room and everybody that's in it with their opinion talking to
- 17:12the white hat who's underneath the well.
- 17:14He's not underneath the tarp, but he's looking used to be,
- 17:17he's looking at his monitor and they're conversing back and
- 17:20forth and what they're talking about and they're giving their
- 17:23opinion and they're getting the play right.
- 17:25OK, we're going to call it non incomplete timers going to go
- 17:28back to 842, It's going to be second down, blah, blah.
- 17:32All of those things laid out for us to hear and I've never heard
- 17:36it before this weekend. Is this the first weekend it
- 17:39was? I thought it was phenomenal.
- 17:41I was not watching when you and Bam in our text that started
- 17:44talking about it, but I did see the one in the fourth quarter
- 17:47and I was watching at the time and had the volume up on that TV
- 17:49at the time. So I was able to hear that one.
- 17:52It was a touchdown for Clemson in the back of the end zone and
- 17:54them just going through all the different parts.
- 17:57This is what happened. This was that touch they took
- 17:59that touchdown off the. Board, yes, took it off the
- 18:01board and said this is what we see.
- 18:03This is where he doesn't have control foot out of bounds
- 18:06explaining it in a way that makes a whole lot of sense.
- 18:09This could be if this continues and everybody starts to do oh.
- 18:14They have to now. This could be as big as anything
- 18:18that we've seen viewing games in television since the first
- 18:22downline. I was going to say the same
- 18:24thing since the yellow line. That's exactly right.
- 18:26I totally agree. With you, that was the biggest
- 18:28innovation that has changed and that.
- 18:30Was what, No 20 something you? I was doing mornings in
- 18:34Indianola on the jock. So that's when that's how long
- 18:36that's. I was in college 'cause I
- 18:37remember us talking in 2000 and that's just being baffled of how
- 18:40they did it. Uh huh, 99 maybe.
- 18:42Wonder if there's a guy like, how do they step on the line
- 18:45and, and their foot isn't there? Yeah.
- 18:47Yeah, yeah. How it was superimposed into the
- 18:50field. How do they do that?
- 18:51Well, obviously they had the technology to make that happen.
- 18:54First time in 25 years we've had something like this.
- 18:56It's it was great. It was great.
- 18:58I'm like you. Like you say, I think the other
- 19:01schools almost are going to be forced to do this.
- 19:04If you didn't see it, you'll you will at some point coming up
- 19:07here. And I believe that you'll feel
- 19:08the same way that Trent and I do because, you know, we're all
- 19:11fans. We all like to bitch and moan
- 19:13and complain about the officials.
- 19:14And how did they miss this? No, no, it's it's great.
- 19:19Listening to the I think there was three people in the room.
- 19:21Was there three? Seems like there was 3.
- 19:23Seems like. Yeah.
- 19:25All had a mic on and talked into the white hat.
- 19:27It was great. All right, let's get Jeff in
- 19:29here. He wants to chime in.
- 19:31Hello, Jeff. How are you?
- 19:33Doing well, a couple quick shout outs.
- 19:35There's a boxing match. I know I have no idea what this
- 19:38market does for boxing, it's a dying sport, but Terence
- 19:42Crawford against Canelo on Netflix Terence Crawford as an
- 19:47underdog winning going up to the right of.
- 19:50Omaha. Pride of Omaha out, out boxing,
- 19:54Canelo looking, You know, Canelo's been almost lighted out
- 19:57since Mayweather a long time ago.
- 20:00And Terence, I mean, put on a clinic.
- 20:03I mean the speed, the move. And it was a unanimous decision,
- 20:06right? It was it was unanimous, but the
- 20:09biggest again, the take away for me when you go up 3 weight
- 20:12classes, you're not supposed to take those punches.
- 20:14And he was taking punches like he was living around the 1:50
- 20:18one 54162 weight class. He just moved up to 1, 47 a
- 20:22couple years ago. He lives in that 140, maybe 140.
- 20:267 Was it on Netflix, Jeff? Yeah, it was on Netflix.
- 20:29And so it's no pay-per-view other than you, if you have
- 20:31Netflix, you got to fight. Yes.
- 20:34Got you. Well, I'll say this, I talked to
- 20:35my son yesterday and and who works at Circa and he has he
- 20:39said that he's never seen it busier for for boxing, took more
- 20:43bets. Yeah, so it was swamped and I
- 20:46saw some pictures of stadium swim and it was elbow to elbow.
- 20:49And that's a big facility. Anyways, go ahead.
- 20:52So I was at a friend of mine gave me cheap tickets yesterday.
- 20:58Billy, my girlfriend's first game NFL experience.
- 21:02Tailgating was awesome. The weather was awesome, the
- 21:06fans on both sides awesome, and I just want to just be frank.
- 21:11I'm not a Chief fan, so I'm going to kind of give you
- 21:14straight up the middle of my thoughts.
- 21:16The Chiefs are in trouble. Chief Nation, you are in
- 21:18trouble. Music to Ken's ears.
- 21:22You can't. No, you can't run the ball
- 21:25besides Mahomes. You can't.
- 21:28It's very hard from Holmes to go down the field.
- 21:30I'm talking 15 yards. I understand there's receivers,
- 21:33Hurts. I've got all that.
- 21:35They need to get on the phone and they need to get Kyra kill
- 21:38back in Kansas City ASAP. Their defense, their defense was
- 21:42fine. They stopped Saquan after about
- 21:44the first quarter. He held a Saquan.
- 21:46If they held him in check. I thought they did a pretty good
- 21:48job with Hertz. You know, that tip, that pit
- 21:52ball that Kelsey had on the goal line, large, huge, very big
- 21:56deal. But if Kansas City, I love when,
- 22:00if there's a Kansas City fan that calls in or you know, the
- 22:02guys that you bring in that are, you know that right?
- 22:04For Kansas City, they play Baltimore in two weeks and I
- 22:07don't know what that's going to do.
- 22:08I know it's in Kansas City. But if you think that right now
- 22:11Kansas City is better than Baltimore or Buffalo, I haven't
- 22:14seen it. These fans need the layoff, the
- 22:17Bud Light or the Bush Light and look through and look through
- 22:20your eyes. Kansas City.
- 22:22It's not just as top of the AFCI don't know if they're going to
- 22:26win their division. Tick tock to you.
- 22:29I'm with you. I I think it's well, we'll see.
- 22:32Jeff, thanks for the call. I appreciate it.
- 22:33But I, I don't disagree with what you said, but now I didn't
- 22:36see a ton of the game. I was watching the the Colts
- 22:38screw the Broncos late and they get they look, they forgot
- 22:41themselves. So so JK Dobbins picks up a
- 22:44first down clocks in Denver's favor.
- 22:47Tick, tick, tick, tick. Decides to spike the ball.
- 22:52He spiked the ball after he picked up.
- 22:53Ran for 12 yards. Spiked the ball.
- 22:55Yeah. OK.
- 22:56Delayed game, 5 yards. Go back.
- 22:58Next play is holding. Will Lutz has a chance to win
- 23:00the football. Well, to put them up by 5 points
- 23:03or whatever it was. Clanks off the upright, opens
- 23:06the door then. The Colts can finish.
- 23:10And try. That's the point.
- 23:11Here's the thing. Colts are good.
- 23:13Colts are good. 400 He's 12 to one in the Comeback Player of
- 23:17the Year, by the way. 7.1 yards per play, 6 for the Broncos. 473
- 23:23yards against that Denver defence.
- 23:24Indianapolis easily could have won this game.
- 23:27They haven't. Punted all year.
- 23:28Yes. September 27th, 1998.
- 23:32The first time we saw the yellow.
- 23:34Line. Nice.
- 23:35Thank you, baseball. Benny, let's get let's get Steve
- 23:39in here. Hi, Steve.
- 23:39How are you? Good guys, How are you?
- 23:42What's up? They, a wise man, told me to the
- 23:45game of the week was Cal against Minnesota.
- 23:48Yes, a wise man did didn't. He and I'm wondering from a
- 23:52future standpoint for Cal to win the ACC, they avoid Clemson,
- 23:58Georgia Tech, Miami and Florida State the rest of the way in
- 24:02conference play. Do they really?
- 24:06That's an advantageous schedule if there ever was 1 you.
- 24:10Can get the golden bears right now going through Not listed at
- 24:16That's not listed right now What?
- 24:18Yeah. Got Duke, Louisville, Georgia
- 24:22Tech, Clemson, Miami at the top. Not seen them listed on
- 24:25DraftKings. I'll keep looking though.
- 24:26Yeah, Steve, worth a. Look, they got a quarterback.
- 24:29Sagapulitelli, what was that? Was that close trend?
- 24:31Pretty good. Who?
- 24:33Who will buy? Him for next.
- 24:34Year, that's a great. Well, he was on Oregon's campus
- 24:36for like a minute. And they let him go.
- 24:39Well, because they had Dante. More and there and he's a
- 24:41freshman. Yes, so they were OK in that
- 24:44Ave. Lefty, he's a hell of a player.
- 24:46That's a good point though, Steve, because Cal's going to
- 24:48have to pony up, aren't they? He's a hell of a thank you,
- 24:51Steve. Appreciate you listening.
- 24:51Glad you watched the game. Did you see much of it?
- 24:54I did. Yeah, I had that one on late
- 24:56night and it was pretty good. ACC, Let's go over to show all.
- 25:00There we go. They're still not listed.
- 25:03This is at FanDuel. Where are the Golden Bears?
- 25:08Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida State, Louisville, SMU.
- 25:10There's Cal there. They are 27 to 1.
- 25:14Mission for the heavy heads in that conference, that's
- 25:17advantageous. 27 to 1. Geron Cavu, Keva Sagapulitelli,
- 25:24A lefty, and he's accurate as hell.
- 25:27He's accurate as hell. Doesn't run it a ton, but he's a
- 25:30heck of a player. 14 to one to make the playoff.
- 25:32Are they? Yeah.
- 25:34Danny Dimes, 12 to win, to be come back.
- 25:35Can he? He does qualify.
- 25:37For that, right? Yeah, coming back from
- 25:39awfulness, but. Yeah, could.
- 25:41Too bad he couldn't have waited a couple more weeks not to be
- 25:44off JJ McCarthy real quick. Oh yeah, you're right, aren't
- 25:47you? I think so.
- 25:48I think so too. Goes too fast for him.
- 25:50It does. Can't process when you have
- 25:53better players, it's easy to win a lot of games.
- 25:57Wasn't asked to do a lot. Nope, Atlanta's got a good
- 25:59defense. Yeah, they're, they got to be
- 26:02kicking themselves. They're not 2 and O yeah, that
- 26:05was a winnable game, Yeah. I don't disagree.
- 26:07But yeah, that defense that we've been here for years and
- 26:10years and years, got to fix the pass rush.
- 26:12They have to do it. They finally did.
- 26:14The Vikings will be better. Darasaw's gonna be back.
- 26:16Harrison Smith's gonna be back. That offensive line yesterday
- 26:19was awful, Kelly, but. You're concerned with Kelly with
- 26:22concussions. He's had a ton of them in his
- 26:23career still. They're gonna be better than
- 26:25that. But at home, that was a future
- 26:28performance. Home opener.
- 26:30Yeah, certainly not a thing of beauty.
- 26:32All right, we'll come back. We'll talk to Bill Seals.
- 26:34He covers Iowa State. Iowa State goes into the bye
- 26:37week 4 and O they get Arizona. It's a night game, 6:00 kick on
- 26:42ESPNA week from Saturday night. Miller and Condon underway on
- 26:45the Monday. It's Des Moines sports station
- 26:47one O 6.3 KX&O on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 26:52Hi, Miller and Condon. Welcome back. 25 minutes before
- 26:541, Trent and I with you until 2 Bama Bob kicks off hour 2.
- 26:58Scott Dr. Man on the Hawks and the Big 10, et cetera, coming up
- 27:02at 1:30. Bill Seals covers Iowa State,
- 27:05cyclonereport.com, cyclonereport.com for Bill, and
- 27:09he's with us, Bill Trenton. Ken, thank you for coming on.
- 27:12Look, it wasn't a thing of beauty, but they're four.
- 27:15No. And that's the bottom line as
- 27:17they head into their break. I guess we should start with The
- 27:20Walking wounded. First of all, and I don't think,
- 27:23correct me if I'm wrong, you'll have a coach's availability this
- 27:26week. That's the way Iowa State's
- 27:28handled it in the past. We may not know anything on
- 27:30Conradi or on Berkel, but let's start with Berkel.
- 27:34Do you know when it happened? Because I, I didn't, I, I wasn't
- 27:38Privy to any buzz chatter, rumors that he got hurt during
- 27:43the days leading up to the game. What happened and what do we
- 27:46know, if anything? Bill, thanks for coming on.
- 27:49Yeah, Appreciate you having me. I think it was a practice injury
- 27:53in the days leading up to the game.
- 27:56I think that he was questionable.
- 27:59Leads me to believe that because he made the trip, obviously
- 28:03they're limited, limited on the number of guys they can have in
- 28:07that travel roster. And going into a hot game like
- 28:11that where you're going to need all of that group of 70, I think
- 28:15it is the number that they can travel with.
- 28:17You know, they're going to bring guys that they think can play.
- 28:20So I think Berkel was questionable and it just came
- 28:23down to a game time decision. They decided to hold them out.
- 28:27Probably a wise move and they they ended up getting the win.
- 28:30They get a bye week now and Big 12 play resumes week from
- 28:35Saturday. So I think a prudent move for
- 28:37the staff, but I I don't think it's anything real serious with
- 28:40him. Good news, certainly on that
- 28:42front, Conradi just kind of confounding even that first
- 28:45field goal, just something felt a little bit off there.
- 28:48What can you fill us in on those details and if it comes to the
- 28:51point where Conradi's out the rest of the kicking game and how
- 28:54that goes? Well, that's it.
- 28:56Yeah, that's a good question. It sounds like he's dealing with
- 28:59a hip injury. I'm not sure if it's some kind
- 29:02of hip flexor or it's just something that it sounds like he
- 29:05keeps tweaking. Did so again on that that that
- 29:11last kick that he had against Arkansas State.
- 29:14You know, what confounds their problems here is that Jace
- 29:18Gilbert was also out. He had been handling the short
- 29:22punts, the the kickoffs. So he he went out early, I think
- 29:27just had the one kick against South Dakota and then Conradi
- 29:32took over and he's been dealing with the this hip injury.
- 29:36And that's kind of pushed Chase Smith into action, who was a
- 29:40former a high school quarterback in eastern Iowa and also just
- 29:44happened to punt for his team and and do some kicking and did
- 29:48a good job. They brought him in as a a
- 29:50preferred walk on and he's a true freshman.
- 29:52But as we saw in that game against Arkansas State, I am not
- 29:57sure that that leg is is matured enough like some of these other
- 30:02guys on the roster. So I think you're going to see a
- 30:04lot with the him with kickoffs. It's going to be a 15 to 20 yard
- 30:09line boot and then they're going to have to be really sharp on
- 30:12the return coverage with him. And then we'll we'll see on
- 30:16field goals that it's it hasn't really been tested a whole lot
- 30:20yet as far as like the the field goal kicking goes.
- 30:24So we'll we'll see on that. If Conrarti's not back Conrarti.
- 30:28It was one for one in field goals against the Arkansas State
- 30:33Saturday, but Smith didn't didn't get in for an attempt.
- 30:36Yeah. Well, so this sounds like with
- 30:39Canardy, if it is a hip flexor or point or whatever it is, that
- 30:42this might not be something that's, you know, just heals
- 30:45itself. Could this linger, Bill?
- 30:47Do you know anything about that? Yeah.
- 30:49Oh, yeah, yeah, I think it, I think it's probably, it's
- 30:52probably going to bug him the rest of the season.
- 30:54I would think, you know, I'm not a doctor.
- 30:57I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night or anything.
- 31:00But I, I mean, with a hip injury like this and he's already, it
- 31:04already has been lingering for a few weeks now.
- 31:07So I think it's something that the the coaching staff's just
- 31:10going to have to monitor as as things move forward.
- 31:13But gosh, it'd be a a big deal if they can at least get Jace
- 31:17Gilbert back to help with to help with some of that.
- 31:21And, and who knows, you know, he could maybe be a guy that they
- 31:25push into field goal action again as well on maybe some of
- 31:28the longer distances. Trey Bell had his best game in a
- 31:31Cyclone uniform, had the pick, but just all over the field
- 31:34making plays and really look tremendous.
- 31:37Lindenwood is where he came in from.
- 31:40Lindenwood. Let's say the emergence
- 31:43continues for Trey Bell and I understand the way that they
- 31:45play with the safeties and things going, but could we get
- 31:48to a point potentially with John Tez Williams on the other side
- 31:51that you know what, we think we really have something here with
- 31:53Trey Bell. Let's move Jeremiah Cooper back
- 31:55over to his natural position safety and then with the bye
- 31:58week here, something that maybe they could tinker with if if
- 32:01Bell continues to make those kind of performances.
- 32:05Well, yeah, he he's versatile enough to to do something like
- 32:09that. I, I think they like what
- 32:10they've gotten out of those safeties so far this season.
- 32:16And Marcus Neil continues to show up.
- 32:19Tayshawn James had one of his best games, I think, and he came
- 32:23back in and is starting now. Kaijaan Cummings, Coleman, I
- 32:28think he took over his role. Jameson Patton, another one
- 32:31that's been solid. So I think that they like the
- 32:34rotation that they got at safety right now.
- 32:38You know, one one question mark, though, I I think moving forward
- 32:42as far as the cornerbacks go is John Tez Williams only played 12
- 32:47snaps against the Red Wolves on Saturday.
- 32:50I'm not sure if that was a cramping issue or if there's an
- 32:53injury for him moving forward. So I, I think again, we're,
- 32:59we're not going to know for, for over a week here and, and maybe
- 33:03we don't even know until that first availability report comes
- 33:07out next Wednesday night as they'll release 1 going into a
- 33:10Big 12 game. So as far as Williams's status
- 33:15and if that was a serious thing. So I think right now though,
- 33:18Cooper for the foreseeable future probably going to remain
- 33:21at corner. Do you have Pro Football Focus
- 33:24numbers in front of you? So, Bill, if so, how did the how
- 33:27did the old line grayed out and, and I guess who in particular
- 33:30because they did a lot, a lot of shuffling during the game.
- 33:33Yeah, they did. They did.
- 33:35They got Trevor Borer in there for his first, first action of
- 33:40the season. So it it graded out, it graded
- 33:44out OK. And then this is always kind of
- 33:46been a unit that that has passed blocked better than than run
- 33:49block. You probably say that about a
- 33:51lot of offensive lines around the country.
- 33:53So it's surprisingly so Brendan Black, a guy that started for a
- 33:59couple years now, seemingly maybe had his back against the
- 34:03wall with Bore coming back in and Black responds and and it
- 34:09was the highest graded of the offensive lineman against
- 34:13Arkansas State. So he played 56 of 63 snaps.
- 34:18So, you know, maybe I think that was the the competition, though.
- 34:21It's always I think always a good thing and probably was with
- 34:24black and how he graded out so that that allowed them to keep
- 34:28Boniface at center then and keep black where he is and then bore.
- 34:34Now who knows? Maybe it's a competition between
- 34:37him and Dylan Barrett at another one of those guard positions.
- 34:41But you know, so far it you look at the snap counts in that
- 34:45Arkansas State game and and Barrett still received about
- 34:50well if my math correct about 67% of the snaps in that game.
- 34:54So I think it though it will be a competition moving forward
- 34:58maybe between those two guys. Outside of getting healthy,
- 35:01getting a little bit of a break and a respite after what they've
- 35:03gone through these last four weeks, what do you want to see
- 35:05during the bye week when they come back out there against
- 35:08Arizona? What are some of the things that
- 35:10you believe they need to key in on and get better as we get
- 35:12ready for get back into Big 12 play?
- 35:15Yeah, I think that the on the defensive side, I'm going to
- 35:19start. This has been a group here that
- 35:22has struggled at times to get off the field the defensively on
- 35:263rd down. They they did that a couple of
- 35:30those drives against Iowa aim seem to be teetering a little
- 35:33bit and it it bore out against again against Arkansas State.
- 35:40So I think that means a defense that tackles a little bit
- 35:44better, tackles in space better. We saw Arkansas State with that
- 35:48mobile quarterback and Rainer and just gashed them.
- 35:52So they're going to need to be on their keys there.
- 35:55I think with with that. So tackling better pass continue
- 36:01to kind of Peck away at the, the pass rush end of things.
- 36:05You shift over to the offensive side of the ball and maybe a
- 36:09little more clarity. I'm, I'm going to be putting up
- 36:11some, some question marks too on my site, by the way, But you can
- 36:14look for a little more details on all these.
- 36:17But the, the, the wide receiver group, I think we need to get a
- 36:22little more clarity there and who, you know, who's the white
- 36:27wide receiver one or who's the alpha guy.
- 36:29I think Lucas and Sean asked me about this on Friday.
- 36:32I'm not sure we're ever gonna get to a point maybe with this
- 36:35group where we have a wide receiver 123 it in in Iowa and
- 36:41Matt Campbell even said the midpoint of the season.
- 36:44We're probably not going to really know what this wide
- 36:46receiver group looks like. But with the bye weeks now worth
- 36:49of practices get back into game prep, sure be nice to see maybe
- 36:53chase so well start to kind of carve out a bigger niche.
- 36:57And we saw it with Xavier Townsend with what he did in
- 37:00that game, that big 44 yard catch that that he had.
- 37:04So maybe he's emerging a little bit, but likewise, yeah, yeah.
- 37:08And in addition, we know what they've got with Bramer and
- 37:11Berkel, but that should be nice to get a little more clarity on
- 37:14how that wide receiver group's going to look.
- 37:16Yeah, I'm surprised Bramer hasn't been a bigger part of the
- 37:18game plan or because he had I don't know how many targets he
- 37:21had. He had that one unfortunately
- 37:22look at happens right. Unfortunately, the shows up in
- 37:26Rocco's box score, but but Bramer hasn't hasn't had that.
- 37:31Oh my God, there's a, there's an NFL tight end game in the last
- 37:34couple anyways, and I 'cause I'm, I'm confident he has that
- 37:37in him. Yeah, well, I I think with with
- 37:41him, he he seemed to really thrive with Berkel being being
- 37:46out for one reason or another. I'm sure ones who are a little
- 37:50more well versed and the XS and OS and breaking down game tape.
- 37:54A football could, could tell you.
- 37:55But you know, maybe with having a guy like Berkel out there, it
- 37:59takes somebody off of a Bramer. But seem like in that Arkansas
- 38:04State game, they were really able to key on him and, and take
- 38:07him out of the game. And Kenny, they're going to need
- 38:10to get him a little more involved too.
- 38:12I think with the, you know, the wide receivers with when you had
- 38:15Higgins and you had Noel, they they weren't really going to
- 38:18take somebody and, and just put him on Bramer to try and take
- 38:21him out of the game entirely. So yeah, I mean that they've got
- 38:25to get him more involved though, and most definitely moving
- 38:28forward. Bill Seal, cyclonereport.com
- 38:30just because those cyclones are off, the content won't take a
- 38:33week off at cyclonereport.com part of on three.
- 38:36Thank you, Bill. We'll talk to you next Monday.
- 38:38Appreciate you coming on. Thank you.
- 38:40Sounds good guys, have a good one.
- 38:42Yep, good to talk to Bill Seals on Iowa State.
- 38:44We'll come back, finish up our #1 Miller and Condon talking
- 38:47sports with you on the Iowa Sports Radio Network.
- 38:50Hi, Miller and Condon, welcome back.
- 38:51Final couple of minutes, first hour of the program.
- 38:54Didn't watch a ton of baseball over the weekend, in fact, very
- 38:57little. That's more.
- 38:58Than me. So did you see Rizzo on Saturday
- 39:02as they honored Rizzo? He's out in the Bleacher.
- 39:04I saw that he can't make this up.
- 39:05Went to the bar, was buying people drink.
- 39:08Buying people drinks. But is he sitting in the
- 39:09bleachers at Wrigley Field? I don't know which one of the
- 39:12Cubs hit it, or even if it was a Cub.
- 39:14Could have been Ray. The ball went right to him.
- 39:16A home run. He dropped it.
- 39:20It's awesome, but good for him. The face of the 2016 World
- 39:25Series champion Chicago Cubs retires as a pretty good, pretty
- 39:29good ceremony. Bottle accounts and see who he's
- 39:32sitting with. No, I get Eddie Vedder, I get
- 39:34that. But you know who is between
- 39:36them? I give you a million guesses.
- 39:39Cindy Crawford, right? I mean, good for them.
- 39:44Yes, absolutely on one hand. But I, I guess I don't
- 39:46understand the connection. It is odd.
- 39:48It isn't it odd anyways? Your Blue Jays looking to be in
- 39:51good shape. I think they are, Trent.
- 39:52Just just when you think they are, that's something.
- 39:55Cubs 5 1/2 back. Yeah, they're on catch.
- 39:57The the path isn't there. The Jays are starting a kid
- 40:00tonight, their first overall pick last year.
- 40:03Oh, really? As pitcher all the way, he's
- 40:05already made it to the bigs, so we'll see.
- 40:07Anyways, baseball in 24 hours from now with our buddy Matt
- 40:12Snyder from CBSSports.com is after all, Tuesdays and
- 40:14Wednesdays are for baseball. Bama Bob Trenton.
- 40:18I will go around college football to kick off our number
- 40:202 Scott Dockerman on Kirk Ference's milestone etcetera.
- 40:24At 1:30. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 40:27Network flagship at Des Moines Sports station One O 6.3 KXNO.
