- 0:04Welcome to the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:06It's Wednesday, the 8th of November, 2023.
- 0:09After the race that stops the nation was run yesterday, we are putting the emphasis in our world, back on the kind of horsepower you know and love.
- 0:17And a return to Mount Panorama Bathurst this weekend for an international event that looks set to be a fierce and intense battle between those on the world tour and some very impressive Aussies.
- 0:32Hi everybody, Rusty here with you for another edition of the Garage Shortcast, the Motorsport Brief.
- 0:37In recent days, we released Jason and Ben Barguana in a fantastic roundtable feature chat recorded in a motorhome with the 2000 Bathurst winner and his son, who upstaged the internationals to take pole position at Race Sydney during the first stop on the Aussie leg of the TCR World Tour.
- 0:56It was a very impressive performance, unfortunately,
- 1:00Turbo trouble and some other heartbreak meant it wasn't a great race weekend for Ben.
- 1:05Fun chat that one though and we have had some nice feedback on it.
- 1:08Thank you.
- 1:09We have a couple of gun bike riders coming up in our regular fortnightly feature episode offering.
- 1:15Keep an eye out for notifications on Gary McCoy, which many of you have been asking for, and Marty Craggle.
- 1:22Two separate long form convos.
- 1:24Marty's crash at Phillip Island still happens.
- 1:27makes me wince and he opens up on it in detail and how mentally tough it was to come back today i'm joined by one of the star studded cast that have come to australia for the tcr world tour he's a race winner in the british touring car championship he's tackled the bathys 12 hour before and he can't wait to get back to the mountain this weekend he's a four-year-old
- 1:48former world champion in touring car racing, and now finds himself right in the game for top honours in the 2023 TCR World Tour.
- 1:59We spoke to Rob Huff before setting off on a road trip, bit of a Griswold tour to Mount Panorama.
- 2:07Rob, welcome.
- 2:08Morning, mate.
- 2:08How are we?
- 2:09I'm very good.
- 2:09Hey, can we start with a debrief on Sydney Motorsport Park?
- 2:12How satisfying was that win for you?
- 2:15Yeah, pretty epic weekend.
- 2:17Lots of points, obviously, which was the main goal.
- 2:21You know, we started off, I mean, you guys are quick.
- 2:24I think as a national championship, you guys are definitely the quickest guys we've come across this year.
- 2:29I think track knowledge played a huge part in the proceedings of the weekend.
- 2:34I was very lucky that I managed to get out in a ute before the weekend and had some laps with the championship winner from this year, Borgie.
- 2:42So that was brilliant.
- 2:44He definitely helped us out a lot.
- 2:46And yeah, I mean, the team just, we just kept working away over the weekend, just chipping away, chipping away.
- 2:52We had some problems early on in the weekend with some dampers.
- 2:55um effectively some failures uh causing us some issues so we lost some lost some track time from that but uh but yeah ultimately guys did an absolutely brilliant job gave us a car that we could really work with and uh yeah obviously race three it all came together but uh to walk away with a p4 a p2 and a win over the weekend i think we got the the biggest points haul in in the world tour and um and put us back up to second in the championship only one point away
- 3:19Mega.
- 3:20We'll get to that in a second.
- 3:21You also were kind of determined in that final one not to let Will Brown win it.
- 3:26What kind of little things did you observe about him, both in and out of the car for that matter, and perhaps even what Melbourne Performance Centre were doing with their Audi?
- 3:35Yeah, I mean, ultimately, you know, we're all in the Audi family team together.
- 3:38We're not fighting against each other.
- 3:41So, you know, ultimately, we agreed early on that we'd all help each other out with data and all the rest of it.
- 3:47I think setup-wise, their car is hugely different to how we run ours.
- 3:51We very much have our base setup that we always work from.
- 3:56And it is quite drastically different to what they have.
- 3:59We never went near what they had.
- 4:01We just worked on what we had.
- 4:03And I think most importantly, the biggest deficit over the weekend was Turn 1.
- 4:09I think that was pretty clear, even on the TVs as well.
- 4:14And, you know, just, you know, the first race just about scoring points and Will just obviously disappeared.
- 4:20Race two with the reverse grid race, he got past a few people quite early.
- 4:24There was a bit of carnage at turn two and turn three.
- 4:27So he snuck through and was behind me and I just got on the radio and said, look, there's no point in holding him up.
- 4:33Let's let him go.
- 4:34But, yeah, race three was...
- 4:36That was not going to happen.
- 4:37Race three, we really got everything together.
- 4:39The car felt great.
- 4:42And so just fully sent it, effectively.
- 4:44First couple of laps, I was a little bit tentative through turn one.
- 4:48Obviously, we were...
- 4:51It was great to have Fred up there with me as well.
- 4:53That gave us confidence.
- 4:54And obviously, you know, knowing Will was there as well, it's not like we're fighting against him.
- 4:58I knew he wasn't going to do anything stupid.
- 5:00He very much understood our position from the weekend.
- 5:04You know, we'd made mates over the weekend.
- 5:06We've been chatting and working well together.
- 5:09And I think he probably knew that race three, if...
- 5:13I felt my car was on the pace, then he'd be struggling in that one.
- 5:17But, yeah, just got a really good start.
- 5:19Obviously, he got a jump start anyway.
- 5:23And then just got my head down.
- 5:24I knew if I could keep him behind me for the first three laps, then we'd be in with a shot.
- 5:28So just zero mistakes.
- 5:31And, yeah, brought it home.
- 5:32Cool.
- 5:33As you say, one point now off Norbert Michaelis, you know Bathurst, right?
- 5:37So that must give you a little bit of extra confidence for the weekend.
- 5:40How much does that time in the 12-hour help you going into this one?
- 5:45Yeah, I think hugely.
- 5:46Ultimately, it was a long time ago.
- 5:48But confidence-wise, mental confidence-wise, it definitely plays a big part that I know the track probably as well as anyone.
- 5:55Probably Fred knows the track the best from our side, let's say.
- 5:59because he's done what three 12 hours and he did the 12 hour this year as well so it's been a long while since I was there but I know the track and having been in the car a lot recently as well definitely helps you know we did a test at Hockenheim a few weeks ago
- 6:13And then obviously being, you know, doing three rounds this week, last weekend just gone.
- 6:17Definitely gives you confidence in, you know, the feeling of the car and where everything's at.
- 6:21So, yeah, for me, definitely confident going in this weekend.
- 6:24We've just got to stay out of trouble.
- 6:26You know, ultimately, we, you know, the first two races last weekend...
- 6:29We just stayed out of trouble.
- 6:30We picked our way through.
- 6:31We took our moments and our opportunities, and race three was the prime opportunity.
- 6:36And we've just got to do the same again this weekend, just stay out of trouble.
- 6:38I've got a great teammate in Fred Fervish who's really backing me up a lot.
- 6:42You know, he's playing a huge part.
- 6:44You know, he qualified 19th, and I think within three laps he was behind me in P5 or 6 in race one.
- 6:51And, you know, seeing that blue Audi behind you as well, that gives you great confidence.
- 6:55You know, race three, he could have very easily, you know, he had a hell of a start in race three.
- 6:59He timed the lights perfectly.
- 7:01He could have very easily stuck it up the inside, but he did the teammate thing, backed out of it and just protected me, which was brilliant.
- 7:09So, yeah, just all of those little things together just give you huge confidence going forward.
- 7:13I mean, ultimately, racing is racing.
- 7:15Excuse my French, shit happens.
- 7:18And you just have to deal with it.
- 7:19But ultimately, we stayed out of all that trouble.
- 7:21And that's been our game plan all year.
- 7:24We, I think, ultimately know that our...
- 7:27our car isn't quite in qualifying a match for the Hyundai and the Lincoln Co when the weights are where they are but we know we've got a hell of a race car and we've raced it hard this year and that's where we've gained everything this year So that leads us to what the car should be like at Bathurst some of the crew are sitting with us here as we record will it be the right knife for the fight at Mount Panorama?
- 7:48I mean you come off the back of Audi winning all the races at Sydney Motorsport Park do you feel like it'll be good up there?
- 7:54Yeah, and I think that was probably a bit of a surprise for us.
- 7:56And I think if we hadn't have had the mixed qualifying, we probably would have seen quite a different weekend in Sydney.
- 8:00You know, the links were absolutely flying.
- 8:02They were 1, 2, 3, 4 in the practice sessions.
- 8:05But obviously the heavens opened in the first lap of qualifying.
- 8:10The guys that stayed out, I mean, I was amazed because we were effectively last in the pit lane so we could see what everyone else was doing.
- 8:15And coming around that first lap, our plan was to come in and do a front to rear swap.
- 8:19But obviously, halfway around the lap, the heavens opened.
- 8:21And I saw almost everyone dive for the pit lane.
- 8:24And I was like...
- 8:25No, we've got to go.
- 8:26So we went, we did the lap, that put us, I think, in the end, P5 or P6 in Q1.
- 8:33But I think only one link made it through.
- 8:36So, yeah, you know, ultimately you can have the fastest car.
- 8:40You can race it as well as you want, but when the heavens opened, and we saw in race one, you know, the heavens opened at turn two.
- 8:46We came through after the safety car.
- 8:48So weather plays a huge part in it.
- 8:50So I think we're all probably hoping for a bit of consistent weather this weekend.
- 8:54And that will allow us to effectively, you know, initiate our game plans.
- 8:59But I definitely think Bathurst is one that should suit our card very much.
- 9:03You know, those hugely long straights.
- 9:06again I think we saw in race three our car is wheeled car seems to carry a lot of speed in our car seems to carry a lot of speed out so we very much work on those you know those factors and Bathurst for sure you want to be quick down those straights and that's about carrying the speed a quick break now on the motorsport brief more from Rob Huff in just a few moments
- 9:28This is the Rusty's Garage Shortcast.
- 9:30After a fantastic weekend of racing at Sydney Motorsport Park, we are about to hit the road to Bathurst with today's guest.
- 9:38Now, before we set off, we chatted to Rob Huff about winning down under and the title fight that he is now right in the thick of.
- 9:46Let's continue the convo.
- 9:49Bit of chat about driving standards.
- 9:50Jan Alashe wasn't all that happy with some of the Aussies.
- 9:53Will Brown, I think, has had a really well-rounded take on social media.
- 9:57He said stuff like disrespectful but completely awesome at the same time.
- 10:02What's your view?
- 10:03Does it need to be addressed at an official level or in your mind?
- 10:06Because I sense you're like racer's racer.
- 10:08Is it just like, just get on with it?
- 10:11The only thing for me is that,
- 10:14People are sensible.
- 10:16We've got extra cars coming to the last races for manufacturers.
- 10:21And that's the only thing that really winds me up a bit is we don't need other people to get involved.
- 10:27I think that's unfair.
- 10:29Us guys, we've been battling this out all year.
- 10:31Just let the same guys battle it out and finish it off.
- 10:35I think when you're young and perhaps a little bit frustrated, it's easy to blame this, that, and any other.
- 10:43You have to accept this year in our championship, we've had 20 years of, let's say, roughly going to the same tracks, having the same stewards, having the same marshals, all the rest of it.
- 10:55This year, we're coming to join your national championships all around the world.
- 11:00You have to expect different decisions on different problems that happen on track.
- 11:04So consistency is always going to be inconsistent because ultimately you will see an incident differently to how I will see an incident.
- 11:12You know, and although the rule book, let's say, is the same, it's not the same because you guys have different rules over here.
- 11:17You know, the weaving behind the safety car, the five-second jump starts, we'd get drive-through penalties for that.
- 11:22The weaving behind the safety car, we're good with that.
- 11:24You know, so, you know, you have to accept that there are these little things.
- 11:28Ultimately, at the weekend, Jan, he weed behind the safety car, so did Mikel.
- 11:31They've both got five-second penalties for that.
- 11:34You know, and these are just the little things you just have to be a bit...
- 11:38You know, a bit tricky as a driver to be switched on to.
- 11:41I mean, yeah, ultimately there was a lot of carnage at the weekend.
- 11:45But I think that's probably also because your guys stepped the level up massively.
- 11:51And your national guys are the fastest guys we've come across this year.
- 11:54So they were in the mix.
- 11:56You know, in South America, everywhere we've been, we've been basically the top nine on the grid.
- 12:02This weekend, that was completely turned upside down.
- 12:05And of course, no one, you know, we as drivers, we only like to see people we recognise, you know, who's this guy in the green Audi who's coming, you know, and coming hard as well.
- 12:15So, you know, that will upset, you know, the princesses as well.
- 12:19OK, that's a huge endorsement for our series, mate.
- 12:21Thank you.
- 12:22It sort of leads me here to Will Brown, right?
- 12:24So domestically here, he's off to a plum drive with Triple Eight next year in supercars.
- 12:29You've observed him and what he's like to race against.
- 12:31You've talked about that already.
- 12:32If...
- 12:34he could find the time within, and if Triple Eight allowed him to do it, should he come and do a few more of these world events based on the Will Brown you've seen so far?
- 12:43Yeah, I have to say, I don't really like Will that much.
- 12:46You know, he's hard to like, you know, because he's a really nice bloke out the car, he's a really nice bloke in the car, and he's bloody quick as well.
- 12:55So no, we don't like people like Will very much.
- 12:57So Will can stay here.
- 12:59He's welcome to his V8.
- 13:01I mean, you know, ultimately, what a guy, you know, to pitch up and...
- 13:04You know, we spoke earlier, or the commentators spoke earlier in the weekend, that only one other driver has come and won a race.
- 13:15Yeah, but not in the way that Will approached the weekend.
- 13:20He was there or thereabouts all weekend.
- 13:21He was P2 on the grid to Ben.
- 13:23Obviously, Ben did a hell of a job in qualifying.
- 13:25He was the one who gambled the most, and it definitely paid off for him.
- 13:30But, yeah, I mean, I think if Will could learn to get the thing off the line, it'd be seriously dangerous.
- 13:38Many people listening in Australia and New Zealand are very familiar with supercars, right?
- 13:42But I think this is arguably now a situation where they are more aware of TCR and just how good it can be when we've got fields like this, quality of competition, as you've described.
- 13:52What is it about this code for you and just how hard has it been to win races this year?
- 13:58Yeah, tremendously hard.
- 13:59You know, ultimately, the great thing about, you know, the TCR platform is ultimately the cars are pretty much the same.
- 14:05And they all have their strengths.
- 14:06They all have their weaknesses.
- 14:07Now, it can be qualifying.
- 14:08It can be wet.
- 14:09It can be dry.
- 14:10It can be, you know, long races, short tracks, long tracks.
- 14:14You know, and you just hope that in the end of the year that sort of comes full circle and plays equally, let's say, between everyone.
- 14:22But just the talent we have on the grid, the drivers, the names, as we've spoken about all weekend.
- 14:30And just for us, I was speaking to Ben yesterday, and he said if he has to finish racing tomorrow, he can accept that because he's raced at Spa.
- 14:41For him to be able to go to Spa, that's like us coming to Bathurst.
- 14:44So for us, we're making huge ticks off our drivers.
- 14:48You know, and teams list this weekend for sure.
- 14:50But, you know, it's a tough championship.
- 14:54You know, it really is tough because there's so many things that are out of your hands as well.
- 14:58You know, we have our BOP, but then you have the compensation weight that we have to think of.
- 15:01And of course, that's going to have shifted massively for this weekend as well.
- 15:05Paul Ben's going to take 40 from qualifying, even though he had a tragic weekend in the races, which is going to seriously hurt him around there.
- 15:12And we know that's effectively a weak spot for our car, so we've worked really hard this year to make sure we've received as little weight from qualifying as possible.
- 15:20We know the strength of our car is racing, so if we've got a light car, we can go racing and we know we can turn those results around, like I did in Budapest 13th to second, like Fred did from 19th to fifth or whatever it was this weekend.
- 15:33We know we can do that.
- 15:34Purists would kind of appreciate all things race cars, those that are listening to the podcast here.
- 15:40They might only have 350 horsepower, but the racing's really intense.
- 15:43What would a naysayer that might like muscle cars, what would you say to that person about TCR and why it's been so enjoyable for you?
- 15:50I mean, I think, obviously, you know, the European spec of touring car has been massively different to what any of you guys have really seen before in the past.
- 15:59You know, we used to race 1,600 turbos, and they were our top level, but we were banging 400, 450 horsepower from those.
- 16:05You know, ultimately, racing is racing.
- 16:07We saw there was a smaller race this weekend that I was watching.
- 16:11I mean, obviously, I don't get to watch our races because I'm in them, but I was watching a smaller race.
- 16:15It was only, like, 10 cars, and it looked like a sort of quite a...
- 16:18sort of slowish one-make championship but the race that the hyundai excels i think it was there you go that race before ours was just insane you know you don't need fast big loud cars to to to make a spectacle you know you just need you know equality but cars that can you know overtake um drivers that you know
- 16:39Normally we do have a lot of respect for each other.
- 16:41It seems it all went out the window last weekend.
- 16:43But you just want close, hard racing.
- 16:46And ultimately that's what motorsport fans love.
- 16:49Of course, we all love a huge V8.
- 16:51Jumping that ute on Thursday for me was literally a dream come true.
- 16:56I've grown up seeing these things, always wanted to have a go in one.
- 16:59And obviously Borgie gave me the opportunity, so jumped in that.
- 17:03But ultimately, you know, we don't need Thunderous V8s.
- 17:06You know, our little front-wheel drive shopping cars are quite adequate.
- 17:10Damn, they're better than adequate.
- 17:11Right.
- 17:11A couple to finish here because you've been good with your time.
- 17:13Thank you.
- 17:13What is still on the to-do list in your career?
- 17:16I mean, we love the style of racer that you are.
- 17:19Clearly, you enjoy it young at heart, but there are some younger drivers coming through.
- 17:23Where are you at?
- 17:24Yeah, I mean, when I started this 20 years ago, I was the youngest driver in the championship.
- 17:28Now I'm the oldest.
- 17:30But still seem to be doing pretty well at it.
- 17:32So, you know, I mean, the number one goal, obviously, is to win this thing this year.
- 17:36You know, I've been very lucky that I've been involved with four different types of car in the World Championship over 20 years for maybe five different spec of cars.
- 17:45um and this would be what my fifth year in the tcr and uh it's a huge uh empty box that i need to take to win this thing before i then think about what i do moving forward but you know ultimately uh it's been a hell of a year i want to keep keep pushing just focusing on this year and you know if we get to macau in with a shout of winning this thing i'm pretty confident cool
- 18:06There was a little bit of chat about maybe BTCC.
- 18:08Would you go full circle?
- 18:09And what's that rumour like?
- 18:10Yeah, I mean, I jumped in a car halfway through the season this year at Knock Hill.
- 18:15I've just moved back to the UK.
- 18:16So ultimately, it was an opportunity to get my name back in the BTCC paddock.
- 18:20Obviously, BTCC's huge.
- 18:22It's definitely something I'm looking at, you know, moving forward.
- 18:2520 years of traveling around the world has uh has taken its toll probably um but yeah i mean to be to to be able to race closer to home would obviously you know fit very well with my family and all the rest of it so uh let's see but like i say i want to get this thing done i want to get this box ticked and uh yeah if we uh give me a call monday after mccow and let's talk about it again
- 18:45It seems like you and Norbert Michaelis get on pretty well.
- 18:49I mean, as you've talked about, it's only one point between the pair of you going in.
- 18:52On Sydney Harbour yesterday for a jet boat ride was a lot of fun, some good laughs there.
- 18:55Do you park all that for Bathurst from this point on?
- 18:58Does it get a bit stressier between you two or is it pretty easy going?
- 19:03No, I think life between me and Norby is pretty boring, if I'm honest, because we have been good mates for, what, 15 years now since he arrived in the championship.
- 19:11And again, Norby's like Will.
- 19:14He's just annoyingly nice and fast and always produces results.
- 19:19I hope they say the same about me as well.
- 19:22But ultimately, just make the best man win.
- 19:25I think we're both in positions in our life where we want it more than anything.
- 19:30It would be like a complete full circle for both of us.
- 19:33So, yeah, I mean, I'm pretty confident, but let's see what happens.
- 19:37Because at the end of the day, you know, two race weekends that I know are going to suit me and my car very well.
- 19:45But racing is racing and no one knows what's going to happen.
- 19:48Cool.
- 19:49To finish, are you going to go hard or is this about playing for points this weekend at the Mountain?
- 19:53No, we're going deep all the way.
- 19:55Sending it.
- 19:56Send it.
- 19:57Go well for the rest of the year.
- 19:58You're in with a great shout at this, and it's been fantastic to have you back down under.
- 20:01Thank you very much.
- 20:02Cheers, mate.
- 20:02Thank you.
- 20:04If you happen to catch any of the action on Nine or Stan, you'll know that the racing in Sydney was elbows out, as they say.
- 20:10In fact, that is probably not a good enough description of just how ferocious or savage it was.
- 20:15It was really enjoyable.
- 20:17There's TCR, a title decider in Trans Am, V8 touring cars that have lots of history at the mountain.
- 20:24The Kiwis taking on the Aussies in the touring car masters.
- 20:28We're going to figure out which of the gun youngsters will win the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge and much more.
- 20:34We would love to see you in Bathurst.
- 20:36Just go to motorsporttickets.com.au if you'd like to come up and take it all in.
- 20:43Brazilian Grand Prix have been issued with a please explain after a track invasion.
- 20:48Max Verstappen chalked up win number 17 of the season, amazing, from Lando Norris.
- 20:54Photo finish for third with the Fonz, Fernando Alonso just edging out Sergio Perez.
- 21:00Tough day for the Aussies with a bit of chaos at the start involving Alex Albon and Kevin Magnussen.
- 21:05Daniel Ricciardo says he is lucky to be alive after some of that debris hit his Alphatorre.
- 21:11He finished a lap down and Oscar Piastri two laps down in 14th after also suffering damage.
- 21:18Charles Leclerc must be wondering what he has to do for a change of luck going off on the warm-up lap with hydraulic issues.
- 21:27Well done to Ryan Blaney, who's won the NASCAR title with a second-place finish in the race at Phoenix, giving Penske its fourth Cup Series crown, and it's the first back-to-back win for the captain in NASCAR.
- 21:40Looked like Scott McLaughlin was there, cheering his stable mate on too.
- 21:44Shane Van Gisbergen can add Aussie racing car wins to his diversely impressive CV.
- 21:50Is there nothing he can't drive or win in?
